START 1: From the car park walk down the road past the Bankes Arms pub and turn left by the public toilets on to the path signed for Old Harry. Look out for rectangular earthworks in the wood near Old Harry - the remains of fields used by Celtic farmers. 2: From Old Harry follow the coast path up a gentle rise, keeping well back from the sheer cliff edge. 3: At the first gate, keep to the cliff top path. There’s a good variety of chalk grassland flowers in the short turf, but you’ll need to go down on hands and knees to best enjoy them. Look back to enjoy a fine view of the Pinnacle stack. 4: Go through a farm gate and head straight on past earthworks and along Ballard Down. 5: Just before the stone bench marked ‘Rest and be thankful’, where the main paths cross, turn right down the hill towards Studland. 6: Follow the road down through the Glebeland estate. 7: Go straight on at the crossroads, following the sign for the church. On your right is the village cross, which was erected in 1976. The carvings depict a range of images both ancient and modern. END 8: At the end of the lane, go through the gate into the churchyard. WARHOL’S POP ART QUEEN AND ARMADA PORTRAIT OF ELIZABETH I

ndy Warhol’s pop art print of the Queen and the famous Armada portrait of Elizabeth I are to go on show in a Jubilee exhibition of artworks depicting the queens who have ruled throughout history. The unprecedented display at Sotheby’s in London will showcase paintings of each of the seven queens regnants who were crowned in their own right, stretching from Tudor times to the Platinum Jubilee age of Elizabeth II. The portrayal of Elizabeth I is described by Sotheby’s as “one of most seminal images of female power ever created”, and Warhol’s impression of Queen as both “glamorous” and “commanding”. Featuring in the exhibition, which runs from May 28 to June 15, will be key portraits of Mary I, Mary II, Queen Anne, Queen Victoria and Mary Queen of Scots, lent from aristocratic and other British collections. Alongside the historic paintings will be nearly 40 dazzling noble and aristocratic tiaras with British and European royal provenance – many never seen in public before – dating back through to the 1830s. It forms part of the auction house’s Jubilee Arts Festival – a

month-long programme of events celebrating the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. Sebastian Fahey, managing director of Sotheby’s EMEA, said: “We’ve certainly never done anything like this, or on this scale, here before, and it has been a pleasure to work in this way with so many of the important institutions and families across the entire country. “I’m sure the galleries will look absolutely spectacular, with an astonishing collection of portraits under the same roof the first time – including the Armada, which is one of the most seminal images of female power ever created – alongside tiaras that span two centuries, and important manuscripts that formed part of the pageantry of our monarchy.” The portrait of Elizabeth I, painted to commemorate the failed invasion of England by the Spanish Armada in 1588, is on loan from the Duke of Bedford’s collection at Woburn Abbey. From modern times, one of the richlycoloured screen prints from Warhol’s Reigning Queens series from 1985 will be on display. It which shows Elizabeth II’s image in blue tones. The collection was based on an official photograph released for the monarch’s Silver Jubilee. Tom Eddison, Sotheby’s senior director and contemporary art specialist, described the piece, on loan from a private collection, as “in equal parts glamorous and commanding; perfectly representing the global and celebrity age” in which the Queen has reigned. Visitors will be able to view more than three dozen tiaras including a 1960s turquoise cabochon and diamond piece by Van Cleef & Arpels. Another designed as a wreath of diamond-set leaves dates from the 1830s, and was crafted in homage to the classical designs of 50 JUNE 2022

ancient Rome and inspired by a revival of the style during Napoleon’s rule. Among historic manuscripts of royal significance on display will be the death warrant of the 7th Earl of Northumberland signed by Elizabeth I. Dating from 1572, it has been loaned from Alnwick Castle. The document draws out writs and instructions necessary for the execution of the 7th Earl after his part in the disastrous ‘Rising of the North’. The auction house is also holding a British Art: The Jubilee Auction on June 29. It will include pieces by Turner, Gainsborough, Barbara Hepworth, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Bridget Riley and Banksy. A new work of the Queen, donated by artist Chris Levine, will also be for sale, with proceeds benefiting the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. Entitled Lightness Of Being, it depicts the monarch with her eyes closed and was based on Levin’s 2004 portrait of the Queen marking 800 years of allegiance to the Crown by the Island of Jersey. It is expected to fetch between £100,000 and £150,000.

xperience two weeks of first-class tennis, strawberries and cream and good-natured queuing at the world’s oldest tennis tournament and one of the most prestigious events in the sporting calendar. The All England Lawn Tennis Club has announced plans for the 135th staging of The Championships, including the celebration of the centenary of Centre Court in its current home. Celebrating this centenary will be the focus of The Championships 2022, with a special ceremony taking place on Sunday 3 July, the Middle Sunday. To mark the occasion, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum has installed a new exhibition dedicated to Centre Court – 100 Years of Change – for visitors to enjoy, and a commemorative centenary towel will be on sale. Taking place at the magnificent All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon since 1877, it is a quintessentially British experience. Games are still played on the original playing surface, grass, and there’s a strict white-only dress code for players. The Tournament attracts around 500,000 spectators including members of The Royal Family and celebrities, plus more than a billion viewers across 200 nations. 2022 also marks the first year that The Championships will take place over 14 days, with the introduction of play on the Middle Sunday to the permanent schedule for the first time. It has never been more important for sports events to be proactively taking steps to enhance their accessibility in order to reach broader and more diverse audiences. Introducing an extra day to their schedule, enables AELTC to achieve this. Also, they can spread the fourth round matches over two days in line with the other Grand Slams, and the opportunity to make some additional changes to enhance the second week for competitors, guests, partners and fans around the world. The AELTC has also announced the exceedingly difficult decision to decline entries from Russian and Belarusian players to this year’s Championships. As always, the tournament schedule remains provisional and subject to change at the discretion of the Referee. In addition, 2022 marks the first year of the 14&U Junior Championships, which will take place in the second week. The staggered start times of Centre Court (1.30pm) and No.1 Court (1.00pm), introduced in 2021, will be retained and run through until finals weekend when play on Centre Court will commence at 2pm. There is not a public ballot for tickets in 2022. Guests who were successful in the 2020 public ballot are being offered the same day and court for 2022. The Grounds capacity will be up to 42,000 each day. After two years, The Queue will return for spectators wishing to buy tickets on the day, as will Ticket Resale, for those wishing to purchase returned Centre Court, No.1 Court and No.2 Court tickets, in return for a donation to the Wimbledon Foundation. Following its introduction last year, enhanced mobile ticketing will continue, with all tickets distributed via the official Wimbledon mobile apps on iOS and Android.

emember back in lockdown, when lots of people attempted to cut their own or their partner’s hair? It resulted in some surprisingly decent ‘dos – and some absolute disasters. According to experts, something similar happened thanks to the hours spent in front of the bathroom mirror pampering our complexions. “Lockdown allowed consumers to really get into self-care, specifically skincare. It gave consumers the opportunity to assess their skincare routines – or lack of! – and discover new products,” says Superdrug skincare ambassador, Dr Ewoma Ukeleghe. “Equally, it’s been a time when [people] have completely ruined their skin, compromising their skin barrier in the process.”

Dr Ukeleghe is working with the retailer on the launch of its Skin School online hub (superdrug.com/skincare-advice), which aims to educate consumers about how to look after their complexions, after research found that 73% of shoppers don’t always understand the ingredients in the products they’re using. Whether you’re a newbie or a self-confessed ‘skintellectual’, sometimes it helps to go back to basics for a reminder of how to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.

Just because you see someone on Instagram slathering their face in Vaseline before bed – known as ‘slugging’ – or completing a 12-step Korean skincare routine, doesn’t mean you have to do the same. It’s more important to understand your skin’s individual needs, than simply follow the latest fad. “This is a common skincare sin committed by consumers,” says Dr Ukeleghe. “Doing this can be detrimental to the skin, as you aren’t addressing its needs and concerns. This can manifest as skin sensitivity, dermatitis and breakouts. Be led by what your skin needs.”

3. Keep it simple

“There is a trend in skincare of trying to use as many actives as possible in one sitting,” says Dr Ukeleghe, which she says could “cause more harm than good to the skin” in some cases. Plus, you might struggle to find which ingredient is the most effective for you particular concerns if you use multiple actives at once. 4. Use a retinoid

“Retinoids are a must within a skincare routine – unless contraindicated [ie they don’t agree with your skin type],” says Dr Ukeleghe. British-led design preserves Belgravia coach house style

bespoke up and over garage door beautifully designed and manufactured by Rundum Meir has brought 21st century functionality, access and security to a Grade II listed property in London’s exclusive Belgravia. One objective of the renovation project by RDB Architecture & Interiors sought to provide improved access to the garage of the property, which is located on one of the capital’s most desirable residential streets close to Eaton Square Gardens. This had to be done in a way that was sympathetic to the local architecture and compliant with the house’s listed status. The garage doors of the properties lining this cobblestone street are fine examples of the 19th century coach house tradition. Hence, any attempt to dramatically alter the external appearance of the doors would be detrimental to the elegant appeal of this upmarket neighbourhood and flatly refused by council planners. This was the ideal project for Rundum Meir, who custom manufacture every one of their garage doors to a suit a project’s exacting requirements. Here, the client brief was to retain the look of the existing swing opening garage door, but enable up and over automated functionality for improved access and to make best use of the available space. A timber engineered door was the solution, finished in traditional black and complete with the original heavy cast iron Charles Collinge hinges. The door was manufactured by Rundum Meir’s skilled craftsmen at its factory in Germany, who also designed and built the overhead mechanism to comfortably accommodate 86 JUNE 2022

its significant weight. Once manufactured, the garage door was weighed to enable the design of the correct spring counterbalance system and deliver many years of reliable operation. Danesch Missaghian, owner manager at Rundum Meir (UK) said: “The coach house is one of the most defining features of the British Victorian mews house, so it is vital that we preserve this tradition whilst making such properties suitable for today’s world. In being able to manufacture every garage door to meet very specific requirements, satisfying planners in the process, our customers do not have to make compromises as the bespoke up and over door at this property in Belgravia clearly demonstrates.” All Rundum Meir garage doors are designed here in the UK, manufactured in Germany and transported to the UK for assembly in readiness for installation. Every door is manufactured using the highest quality materials such as solid timber and tough extruded aluminium which can be insulated. CASE STUDY Melinda – lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself.

What were you hoping to achieve?

Melinda explains that asking Buy To Let Hunter to manage her flat in Richmond as a short term serviced accommodation makes sense whilst she is spending time abroad. “I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe hold in London, but it was a purely commercial decision to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live somewhere else.” She explains that she didn’t think too much about traditional pensions during her working life; instead, she mostly invested in properties in the 80s and 90s where she could afford them and by default she now relies on that rental income in her retirement.

Why did you choose BTLH?

Melinda explained “The onset of Covid caused a dearth of options in the lettings market. The world has changed in rental terms.” Melinda spoke to the agents who used to handle her property and found their model no longer really be fit for purpose, for her anyway. “I needed shorter lets so I can come and go from time to time.“ The BTLH model is flexible and more cost effective for her needs: “The old agents were proposing a 25% charge on any rental income and then a range of expenses that add up to £500106 JUNE 2022

The Reed family from the Essex market town of Saffron Walden have sold quality furniture and homeware for 140 years but the pandemic gave them an unexpected opportunity to rethink their offering – and they have emerged much stronger as a result. Their flagship store, set across five floors and 13 showrooms, has long been a fixture in Saffron Walden; a destination shop for locals and those from further afield stocking high-end, bespoke pieces,

But under the management of the latest members of the family to take the helm, David Reed and his wife Kate, the store is moving into an exciting new phase while managing to retain every ounce of its authenticity and charm. David and Kate met while working in professional rugby at Bath – David a highly-respected performance analyst; Kate a public relations and media expert who steered the club through one of the most challenging periods in its history off the field. The family business was always going to be their calling and in

2011 David followed in the footsteps of his great-great grandfather Thomas, who 142 years earlier had returned to Saffron Walden from London to start selling coal before branching into antiques. “While we have been in business for 140 years, we have had to adapt with the times, and never more so than during the pandemic,” said David Reed of the business that proudly bears his mother’s name. “We realised we would need to start competing on a much larger scale nationally and so relaunched an evolved brand, relaunched our website and invested in our online team to competitively enter the online market.” Kate added: “What we have always, and will always, be keen to offer is our customer service.
