It has no doubt been another year of change for the restaurant industry and extends to the world-famous Michelin Guide. On 16th February, the prestigious MICHELIN Stars were unveiled for 2022, representing all that is unique and exciting about the dining scene in the UK and Ireland. An extraordinary achievement in any year but particularly impressive at a time when the hospitality industry faced so many challenges, not least having so many stops and starts. Such restaurants have achieved the feat of being awarded or retained Michelin Stars during incredibly challenging times, which makes it all the more impressive. To kick off the 2022 gardening season in style, the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair partnered by Hillier returns to Beaulieu in Hampshire from 29 April to 1 May celebrating spring plants and gardens. Making a welcome return to the spectacular grounds and gardens of Beaulieu, home of the National Motor Museum and Palace House, the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair will be full of spring garden inspiration. As the British Beach Polo Championships or Sandpolo as it has become known, saddles up for its 15th year anniversary in July, we look back on the world’s largest beach polo event and how it has brought polo, parties, prestige and pizazz to Dorset’s golden coast – Sandbanks. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Saatchi Gallery continue their partnership and will present the 2022 RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show this April. Following its success in 2021, the annual exhibition will return this Spring and showcase new work from leading botanical artists and photographers across three galleries.

Tell us a little about yourself?
“I fell in love with theatre whilst at McMaster Uni in Canada, and was told I must go to London. I duly came to study Shakespeare but became ensnared in the thorns of an English rose (the red of Lancashire version) and never left.”
What do you do?
“I founded Intellectual Capital Resources (IC Resources) 22 years ago to focus on ‘deep tech’ recruitment (all the tech that’s in your phone, or a satellite, or an electric car….ie everything except IT). The company is now 70 people with offices in Reading, London, Munich, China and the US.”
What were you hoping to achieve when making an investment with BTLH?
“I make very high risk, seed stage investments in tech companies, and wanted an investment to balance my portfolio. Like all assets, property values fluctuate but the likely downside compared to stocks (or early stage companies!!) is lower.”
Why did you choose BTLH?
“For me the most critical word in seeking success is ‘niche’. I loved the niche, under-represented ‘mid-term let’ idea as outlined by Adrian. he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Saatchi Gallery continue their partnership and will present the 2022 RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show this April. Following its success in 2021, the annual exhibition will return this Spring and showcase new work from leading botanical artists and photographers across three galleries. Entries for the show have been through a meticulous pre-selection process, where the scientific accuracy, technical skill and aesthetic appeal of the work is reviewed by an expert judging panel, with artists and photographers awarded RHS Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver and Bronze medals, as well as a series of special awards including ‘Best Botanical Art Exhibit’ and ‘Judge’s Special Award’. In 2022, a diverse range of subjects will be presented ranging from plants that have grown in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Tsunami to Rosulate Violas found at the height of the Andes Mountains. In addition, native British trees and hedgerow plants will complement illustrations of beautiful garden flowers. Anatomical drawings reveal the structure and form of some of our garden favourites, alongside explorations of the ecological and economic significance of many familiar fruits and flowers. New photography entries include stereographic panoramas from various locations in the Hampshire New Forest and macro photography capturing the details of tiny Holly Parachute fungi. Flat lay photography of winter garden buds examines how different plants flourish, with multiple entries exploring rainbow themes across image series. Former Gold medal winning exhibitors will also show their work alongside artists participating in the 2022 exhibition for the first time. The show is a highlight in the calendar of the RHS Lindley Library, complementing its extensive collection of botanical artworks, photographs and illustrations which include more than 30,000 works. Introducing Studio Muse When was Studio Muse established and by who?
Studio Muse was established by me, Amy Adams in Winter 2019 and soon after a beautiful ‘bricks and mortar’ opened in the affluent area of Pontcanna in Cardiff. I have enjoyed a colourful career in make-up artistry, natural beauty, and product IMAGE: @WELLPENNED. development that began in London in 2002. I’m a born entrepreneur (day dreamer) … I’m also a mummy to four gorgeous boys.
What was the vision for Studio Muse?
SM was born out of a need to heal from a painful year in 2018, with the purpose of Joy. I’ve been in business for almost 20 years and love a good plan … but this was a product of instinct. My vision was simply ‘A Shop of Lovely’ … to feel good again and share this with others. I always wanted to work with flowers, and it seemed the perfect time to be 46 MARCH 2022
brave and switch things up. It was important to include sustainable and gentle business practices from the start. I had worked with natural, cruelty-free beauty products my whole career but had no experience in how to apply these to floristry and retail. Fortunately, this grew organically very quickly, the more I learned. Our beautiful premises was the perfect home for my vision, and it was soon filled with vegan selfcare, wellbeing, and beauty products … and beautiful fresh cut flowers! I remember thinking, can we sell flowers alongside lipstick and face cream? Why not? We didn’t plan much beyond that really!
Did your vision change during the pandemic?
I’ve come to learn the ability to diversify is integral to business. Acting on instinct, we quickly changed up our supplies to specialise in British seasonal flowers. It was such a good move and it felt so good to support British flower farmers, bringing posies of
joy to customers’ doorsteps. We even started wrapping our posies in sheets of The Happy Newspaper to bring extra joy! We experimented with nationwide delivery of our flowers (learning curve!) and that now has a prominent and permanent part of our business. I also further developed our collections of vegan beauty and unique home scenting products and was able to start bringing them to market.
How important is it to you to be an independent business in the UK?
I started in business at 19 and come from a family of small business owners and shop keepers. I adore our ‘bricks & mortar’ boutique and take great care curating our offerings to give a wonderful shopping experience. Our customers get such joy from SM and we are very grateful it blossomed during the pandemic. The pandemic has given rise to so many wonderful conscious, heart-led small businesses in the UK that champion self-worth and play huge roles in our communities. We need that connection more than ever.
new business partnership which will help us ‘say yes’ to many ideas and opportunities I’ve not been able to previously. We’ll explore expansion through concessions and wholesale, plus further ‘bricks and mortar’ locations, likely in London. Further studies will allow me to keep developing our products. To formulate and design from conception to market is a lot of fun! Our plant-based creations are a huge hit with customers and have already attracted a loyal following. We have plans to grow our floral side and strengthen relationships with sustainable flower farms in Britain and other countries. To keep momentum and remain committed to growing our company in a sustainable, gentle, and joyful way.
What makes you feel empowered?
Seeing kindness in business. And opportunity! Over the years it’s not always been a picnic being a working, yet hands-on, Mum in business. But the pandemic has certainly ‘thrown out the rule book’ and is allowing people to embrace Brave and New and basically giving it a go! I was immensely proud when a surprise e-mail came in November to say we had been recognised as a ‘50 most Fabulous UK Independents’ by The Guardian. That news came during a very hard week and gave a much needed boost … thank you universe! The weeks to follow I will never forget, it had an amazingly positive impact on SM.
So, three years in, what is the vision for the next three years and beyond?
It feels so good to begin a new and hopeful vision board focussed on true core values and believe in a bright future again. I’m grateful that we have weathered the various storms and have been given the education … not always welcome, but always helpful. The next chapter for SM will see a MARCH 2022 47

t has been a busy three years for the close-knit team behind Eight Lands – one of Britain’s most exciting young spirits brands. START 1. From the car park walk up Beach Road. At the top turn left between the toilet block and the village pond. Take the narrow snowdrop path at the top of the green. It will take you past an ancient pear tree and the remains of an old stone cottage, before bringing you out in front of Studland Stores. 2: Cross the main road and continue along Heath Green Road. Note the orchards on your left, the apples from which go towards making our delicious Old Volunteer Cider (available from the Knoll Beach café). Turn right down Agglestone Road and follow the track up behind the houses. As you reach the end of the track, keep your eyes peeled for Dartford warblers and stonechats. 3: The kissing gate at the end of the track brings you onto Godlingston Heath. Follow the path uphill onto Black Down Mound, where you will be rewarded with wonderful views to your right across the heath to the coastline, with the impressive Agglestone in the middle distance. 4: Continue along the ridge and, when you meet the gravel track, turn right. At the crossroads, turn right and follow the path down to the Agglestone. From here you can see Little Sea in the distance: an acidic freshwater lake that was cut off from the sea around 100 years ago. 5: Take the path that leads down the slope on the other side of the Agglestone and follow the path through the mire. This wet heath is an important habitat for sundews, bog orchids and bog asphodels. Look out for dragonflies and damselflies. Where the path forks, turn right heading towards the trees. 6: Turn right at the next junction, heading into the woodland. Then turn right again over the bridge and

continue through the bridle gate. Just after Wadmore Farm House, you will see an old brick kiln on your right. 7: After passing the kiln, take the footpath on your right. It is immediately after, and runs adjacent to, the bridleway. At the next junction, follow the footpath round to the left. As the track widens, keep to the right and continue along the footpath in front of you until you reach Heath Green Road. Turn left and follow the road back towards Studland Stores. END 8: Cross the main road and follow the snowdrop path then Beach Road back to your starting point. Sandpolo saddles up for a 15 year milestone in July
A
s the British Beach Polo Championships or Sandpolo as it has become known, saddles up for its 15th year anniversary in July, we look back on the world’s largest beach polo event and how it has brought polo, parties, prestige and pizazz to Dorset’s golden coast – Sandbanks. Most people can understand football or volleyball being played on a beach yet few understand the sport of polo let alone it being played on a sandy beach. The sport of horse polo dates back to Persia in 600 BC and has since become known as the Sport of Kings played in exclusive clubs such as the Guards Polo Club and Cowdray Park. However, in 2007 Johnny Wheeler, an amateur polo player, was researching his family history in Poole, Dorset when he came up with the idea of the British Beach Polo Championships to be played on the famous blue flag beach of Sandbanks. With endorsement from the Hurlingham Polo Association and the full support of the local Council Johnny and his friend, polo manager David HeatonEllis, held the first event in 2008. Johnny recalls: ‘The beach was perfect – wide enough at high tide for the polo arena, marquees and grandstand. People were intrigued by the glamour and physicality

hen emotions run high in divorce proceedings, finances and child arrangements can become unduly protracted and costly. For these reasons I welcome the introduction of a no-fault option, which essentially ends the blame game between couples wishing to divorce. Currently, there is one ground for divorce; the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. This ground needs to be supported by one of five ‘facts’: adultery, desertion, unreasonable behaviour, two years’ separation with consent and five years’ separation, whereby no consent is required. If a couple wants to divorce under the current legislation, they have to either wait to be separated for at least two years or rely upon adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Most couples do not wish to put their lives on hold for two years and more importantly they cannot afford to. Furthermore, when petitioning for a divorce based upon two years’ separation with consent, the other party can withdraw their consent at any time up to the date of decree nisi. The majority of separating couples are usually left with no alternative but to petition for a divorce alleging unreasonable behaviour or adultery. The test for ‘behaviour’ is subjective and it does not need to consist of extreme behaviour. A combination of less obvious behaviour can be sufficient. The 72 MARCH 2022
behaviour cited is what the Petitioner deems to be unreasonable rather than what the Respondent or the Judge deems to be unreasonable. It is often very difficult in drafting particulars for an unreasonable behaviour petition, ensuring that the particulars are sufficient and robust enough, balancing Court’s requirement for granting the divorce against not causing too much animosity and upset between the parties. The problems with the current divorce process were demonstrated in a case that involved Mr and Mrs Owens who married in 1978 and separated in 2012. Mrs Owens initially wanted to petition for a divorce based upon two years separation with consent. However, Mr Owens refused to provide his consent. Mrs Owens was therefore left with no alternative but to petition, based upon Mr Owens’ unreasonable behaviour. Mr Owens defended the case, arguing that the examples given of his behaviour did not satisfy the requirements for divorce. The Judge agreed and dismissed the petition. The case attracted wide public attention due to the interpretation of the law relating to ‘unreasonable behaviour’ and left Mrs Owens trapped in a marriage she did not want to be in. As a result of the case and subsequent consultation, it was recognised that no-fault divorce was an important step in helping to remove the animosity that the existing laws perpetuated and the new Act is due to be implemented on 6 April 2022. wellerslawgroup.com

ooking back on her acting career, there’s one role Amanda Holden is raring to reprise more than any other. “I always think, ‘Oh, let’s bring back Cutting It!’” – the BBC drama set in a Manchester hair salon that ran for four seasons from 2002 to 2004 – “I still regularly see Angela [Griffin], we’re all still good friends. I think it would be really fun to bring that back.” To play hairdresser Mia Bevan, the Hampshire-born actor spent time under the tutelage of legendary stylist Lino Carbosiero at Daniel Galvin: “I actually learned how to be a hairdresser. I swept the hair, did the blow dries. I learnt all kinds of tricks and tips.” Now, nearly two decades later, Holden has landed a hew hair-related role as celebrity ambassador for Charles Worthington. After an afternoon tea event to launch the partnership – Holden resplendent in a white suit, her honeyblonde locks perfectly coiffed – we’ve retired to a quiet corner of the swanky hotel to chat. The Britain’s Got Talent judge admits her tresses have been through some tough times, including the phase in the 80s when a certain royal was all the rage: “Me and my sister, both of us wanted Princess Diana hair. I had a sailor dress because [Diana] wore a sailor dress, I had flat pumps. I made a scrapbook. I was a huge fan.” Jennifer Aniston was – and remains – another source of ‘hairspiration’ (“Yes, I did The Rachel! Of course!”) but the 50-year-old says she won’t be following the recent trend set by celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker and letting her greys peak through. “I will always be blonde. Each to their own – I have some friends that are

embracing age, some people that aren’t. My mum stopped dyeing her own hair around 60 and she’s got really gorgeous, soft-coloured grey hair. I’ll always go ‘Oh god, Mummy, can you just put a bit of colour back in?’ But for me, it’s not something I’m going to do.” Nor is she going to be retiring from the spotlight anytime soon. Holden, who co-hosts the Heart Breakfast radio show with Jamie Theakston on weekday mornings, cites Jennifer Lopez as an example of a woman in the entertainment world going “through the roof” in terms of “what you can achieve at what age”. Blonde ambition aside, the mum-of-two (she shares daughters Lexie, 15, and Hollie, nine, with record producer husband Chris Hughes) “relished” the chance to spend more time with her family at home in London during the first UK lockdown last year. “I really loved having everyone under one roof. I loved it. I loved being silly on TikTok, I loved that I socialised with my best friends on Zoom. I loved that I didn’t need to call an Uber, I just staggered up the stairs. There was so many positives for me.” The third lockdown was a different story, however: “The third one did my head in, just in the way that I just lost faith in the government and the rules generally and human nature. I think we started lockdown by being told to look out for each other, and we ended lockdown by being told to spy on each other.” Now, as the pandemic rumbles on, Holden worries that Brits might not be as resilient as they were in the past. “We’ve got to learn as a nation. You know, we’ve won wars, we’ve got through everything with our sense of humor and our stoicism and our ability to stand up for ourselves, and I just hope that we haven’t lost any of that. I don’t want Great Britain to go soft, otherwise I’m leaving – like Kylie!” Recently, the pop star told the BBC she would be moving back to her native Australia, a claim which Holden cheerfully refutes. “I don’t think she’s going. No! Rubbish!” she says, laughing. “She’s not going anywhere. She has a house here and Australia, she’s always done that.” The pair share make-up artist Christian Vermaak, and now they’re both Neighbours alumna, with Holden shooting scenes for the Aussie soap in London earlier this month that will air next year. “Oh my god, she rang on set as well!” Holden recalls. “Kylie rang Christian. She was like, ‘Let me speak to Amanda’. And I was like, ‘Excuse me, I’m just talking to Charlene, everyone!’ It was such a thrill. So fun and so camp.” After making her Ramsay Street dream come true and releasing her debut studio album, Songs from My Heart, last year, the multi-talented star has now set her sights on the literary world and hopes to publish a novel. Is there anything else left on her showbiz bucket list? “I would love to play like a baddie in a Bollywood movie. That’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do, right from my 20s. Surely I could be some wicked mother or some kind of baddie who turns up an upsets the apple cart?” For now, the jetsetter is off to Dubai for a well-earned break, where she’ll indulge in her favourite treats again after being “vegan for most of this year. I thought, ‘I’m gonna just try being vegan for a bit’, because I just wanted to and I’ve really enjoyed it, and how it’s made me feel. “But I’m off on holiday tomorrow, so I will be back on the rosé and the cheese. I just think don’t make rules for yourself. Just do everything in moderation.”

G
abriella Crespi wasn’t your average Milanese muse. She was beautiful, yes, but she also had what other creatives like to call the eye: a way of looking at things and making them wonderful. It began with a series of objets d’art she made for her girlfriends in the late 1950s: small velveteen keepsakes that she embossed with snippets of poetry. Like so many great Crespi styles, they were initially supposed to be kept private. And yet when Christian Dior caught wind of them, he begged Crespi to sell them in his store in Paris, spotting the kind of everyday artistry that had been missing from the world of haute-couture. It’s a quality she would continue

to cultivate in the years that followed. Whereas icons of decades past had favoured rigorous lines and austere dressing, Crespi wanted to design styles that were lush, vital and alive. The ones we’re interested in today are known as the Bohemian ‘72 Collection. A compilation of louche, rattan loungers that promise to bring the warmth of the Tropics home. “[With Bohemia] I wanted to create a house of sun,” Crespi once declared, inspired by the easygoing garden rooms she found on her overseas adventures. To do so, she would have to abandon her usual mediums of brass and stone, reaching instead for something softer. She thought back to her many travels in Asia. The

houses she encountered. And the way organic textures like rattan, straw and bamboo seemed to play with light. Mastering their many movements would prove challenging work. Each of the rattan palms had to be steamed to approximately 100 degrees, before being bent around a free-flowing mould. And yet Crespi didn’t believe in cutting corners, pioneering a wonderfully sinuous style of furniture that saw reams of the rich material coiled layer upon layer. Next came the pillows. At the time, low-slung lounge culture was in full bloom, but Crespi wanted to take it further, angling the cushions at 115 degrees so as to inspire the sitter to sink into new rhythms and flows. Observing, perhaps, how clouds chased each other through the sky. Or else the way an overhead bourgenvilla flourished just so. Light enough to be brought outside on a bright summer’s day, the Bohemian ‘72 Lounge collection did away with the last vestiges of formality under which Italian lounges laboured; ushering in a new era of softness, indulgence and style. As gardens come back to life, some of our featured plants for Spring 2022 are the more unusual bulbs & Hellebore varieties. Daffodils: the seasonal signifiers with their instantly recognisable yellow or white flowers, bringing much cheer to the city. Narcissus ‘Rip van Winkle’, a special variety with its multiple mini petals and green edging, it’s delightful - we adore it! By March Hellebores are gracing us with a profusion of glorious flowers. There are many colour variations to choose from, whether it is the raspberry speckled Hellebore ‘Charmer’ or the deep ‘Anna’s Red’ or pale pink ‘Cheryl’s Shine’. They are all simply divine, and you can bring them indoors to enjoy for shorter periods.
Houseplant Delights
It’s also a great time to refresh your indoors, with an abundance of Spring colour-trends to choose from that can be simply achieved by 98 MARCH 2022
adding a plant or two. Flowering orchids, especially larger species like Cymbidium, will give you long-lasting colour and make a statement on a side table. For a low-maintenance houseplant, then the resilient Kalanchoes are a great choice with lots of tiny, peachtoned flowers. There are even more great new varieties in unusual colours too. Another way to rejuvenate your home with houseplants, is by choosing varieties specifically grown for their large foliage or magnificent patterns and textures. They help create a calm but dramatic effect in your home. Plants like Calathea ‘Yellow Fusion’ are a particularly great choice with its lovely variegated leaves that have a beautiful marble-effect with a contrasting purple underside. A new bar furniture showroom has opened in East Dorset following a design overhaul of its existing storerooms.
arstools.co.uk, which previously only operated online, is now bringing a wide range of its products to life in the showroom located on the Ferndown Industrial Estate. Bournemouth-based KTM Design led the overhaul. The bar stool retailer is showcasing furniture designed for both commercial and domestic use. Owner Anthony Briant said: “Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve seen a spike in demand for domestic bar furniture as people want to recreate the pub or bar atmosphere they know and love in their own homes. “More hospitality venues are also looking to shake up their interiors to help encourage more people through their doors following a difficult few years, so investing in new furniture has played a key part in their upgrade plans. “We hope our new showroom will help provide inspiration for both our commercial and domestic customers. “Having the opportunity to see and touch products in ‘real life’ is important as it helps boost confidence in buying choices, so people know they’re selecting a furniture style which works best for them and their space.” Katie Thomas, Founder of KTM Design said: “We wanted to create an inspirational space which would appeal to a broad audience, helping people envisage their perfect home or commercial bar setting. “We opted for a twist on a classic urban and industrial style to make the space sleeker and more sophisticated, aligning with the client’s highquality offering. “We contrasted wood, brick, and black metal materials with a bold black herringbone floor, featuring a stylish brass trim. “To help make the products the star of the show, we included a warm white LED

I feel grateful to work in such an inspiring studio.” Annabel, meanwhile, is putting her organisational experience gained from a previous career at the BBC to good use: “Running a successful interior design business is more than just
creating beautiful spaces, there is a lot of organisational work that goes on behind the scenes that clients won’t necessarily be aware of. We pride ourselves in providing a friendly and seamless service for our customers which aims to alleviate the stresses of coordinating large projects.” Creative Director, Samantha F. Crockett, says it’s an exciting time for Harris Jackson and its clients: The company has been busy working on a variety of stunning new projects this year, including the completion of a striking residential property in the heart of the New Forest. The owners of this beautiful home approached us for our help in designing the refurbishment of the property. The scope of works covered 19 rooms including 8 bedrooms, a cinema room, living spaces, a dressing room, hallways, snug, spa and library amongst others. The client had no specific direction for the design brief so our role, early on, focused on concepts & moodboards to create a look and feel that would capture their imagination. Creative Director, Samantha F. Crockett, says: “With no specific direction from the client I suggested a coastal New England feel, the concept marrying nicely with the property being five minutes from the coast. With an architectural style that suited this look, I wanted to create a feeling of relaxed coastal luxury.” Designing a project of this size not only came with some logistical hurdles, the knock on effect of the ensuing Coivd-19 pandemic being just one, but also the challenge of bringing a design to life that would flow through multiple rooms over such a large space whilst keeping true to the original design concept. Samantha explains the process: “Originally the scheme of the property was very dark in certain rooms with a lot of purple tones throughout, so using mood boards we took the New England Coastal theme through the house - taking inspiration from
their magnificent, landscaped gardens and nearby coastline to add light to the spaces. Then, room by room, starting with the architectural finishes before moving on to the soft furnishings to complete the New England Coastal feel. The master bedroom in particular, really stood out with its handmade grasscloth wall coverings from Phillip Jeffries and stunning handmade chandeliers from Porta Romana - the perfect coastal retreat to relax in exquisite luxury.” The hard work and perseverance have paid off in other parts of the business also. This year, as well as a rebrand and team expansion, Harris Jackson has been named Interior Design Specialists of the Year at the South England Prestige Awards, and are through to the final for National Businesswoman of the Year 2021 at the NBWA and Best Microbusiness with the New Forest Business Partnership Brilliance in Business Awards.
