With only a couple of weeks to go, anticipation is building for the return of Canford Classic & Supercar Sunday on Sunday 23rd August, as the event celebrates its fifth anniversary with what organisers describe as their strongest line-up to date. Hosted within the beautiful grounds of Canford School, the event has become one of the South’s leading automotive lifestyle gatherings, attracting over 700 display vehicles and an anticipated 6,000 visitors from across Dorset, Hampshire and beyond. Late summer is a particularly special time to visit Brownsea Island. As the season reaches its peak the island’s heathland is transformed into a sea of flowering purple heather, creating a stunning landscape that supports a wonderful variety of wildlife, we take a closer look with The National Trust… This summer, you can enjoy the National Park’s most spectacular scenery from a unique vantage point: the top deck of the popular New Forest Tour. Running until Sunday 13 September, the open-top bus service offers a relaxing, car-free way to explore the New Forest’s stunning landscapes, coastline and picturesque villages. With demand expected to be higher than ever, local bus operators Morebus and Bluestar, working in partnership with the New Forest National Park Authority, have introduced changes to improve connectivity across the area. This year, the Tour’s red route will operate in the opposite direction and include a stop in Brockenhurst, creating stronger links between Lyndhurst, Burley and Brockenhurst Tucked along the coast with panoramic ocean views and the scent of salt in the air, Rick Stein is the kind of seafood restaurant that reminds you why people travel for good food. With its warm atmosphere, attentive service, and a bar menu that reads like a love letter to the sea, it’s no wonder this spot has become a local favourite and a bucket-list destination for seafood lovers. BROWNSEA’S LATE SUMMER SPECTACULAR

ate summer is a particularly special time to visit Brownsea Island. As the season reaches its peak the island’s heathland is transformed into a sea of flowering purple heather, creating a stunning landscape that supports a wonderful variety of wildlife. Among the heathland’s most celebrated residents is the Dartford warbler. This small, long-tailed bird thrives in areas of dense gorse and heather, where it feeds, shelters and nests. Males can be recognised by their distinctive red eye-ring, grey-brown plumage and warm reddish breast, while females are generally paler in colour. Listen out for their characteristic scratchy song, often sung from the top of a gorse bush before the bird slips back into cover. Brownsea’s extensive network of walking trails provides the perfect opportunity to slow down and reconnect with nature. For those seeking a more mindful experience, Cambridge Woods features a self-guided mindfulness and forest bathing trail, encouraging visitors to pause and immerse themselves in the textures, scents and sounds of the woodland. Along the route, a circle of sky-gazing chairs provides the perfect place to pause, unwind and watch clouds drift lazily above the tree canopy. For culture vultures, Brownsea’s open-air theatre performances remain one of the highlights of the summer calendar, offering audiences the chance to enjoy live entertainment in a beautiful setting. Located at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, this invigorating walk can be completed in just a few hours, making it an ideal choice for a refreshing day outdoors. The route begins in the picturesque village of Studland, easily accessible via the National Trust car park near South Beach. Running until Sunday 13 September, the open-top bus service offers a relaxing, car-free way to explore the New Forest’s stunning landscapes, coastline and picturesque villages. A Historic Sanctuary, Reimagined for Modern Retirement Living

Once the pioneering National Sanatorium for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest, this remarkable building has evolved into one of the town’s most desirable retirement communities.

A Landmark of Medical Innovation Founded in 1855, the original sanatorium was the first purpose built institution of its kind, chosen for Bournemouth’s famously mild and restorative climate. Supported by public subscription and notable benefactors of the era, the building was crafted in striking Italian Gothic style — now protected as a Grade II listed treasure. The sanatorium opened its doors on 1 October 1855, operating independently while enjoying royal patronage from Queen Victoria from 1869. Its reputation helped establish Bournemouth as a leading Victorian health resort.

ucked along the coast with panoramic ocean views and the scent of salt in the air, Rick Stein is the kind of seafood restaurant that reminds you why people travel for good food. With its warm atmosphere, attentive service, and a bar menu that reads like a love letter to the sea, it’s no wonder this spot has become a local favourite and a bucket-list destination for seafood lovers. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance sets the tone. It’s nautical without being kitschy—think driftwood accents, large windows that frame the crashing waves, and low, golden lighting that makes everything feel just a little more special. The gentle murmur of diners and the occasional clink of glasses create a hum that’s lively but never overwhelming. We started with the Tuna Tartare, Sashimi and Mussels with yellow kroeung, coconut

milk and makrut lime leaf, and they were nothing short of divine. Each dish was served looking beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. The dishes balanced the richness of flavours, with the freshness of the sea in a way that made it difficult not to order another round. For mains, we tried the Singapore Chilli Crab Burger with Seaweed Salt Fries and the Beef Barbacoa. The burger was a showstopper, indulgent, and brimming with generous, juicy and perfectly cooked soft shell crab. It was well-seasoned, with just the right touch of chilli to brighten the dish. The Beef Barbacoa, meanwhile, had a delightful seasoning of chipotle, garlic and oregano, giving it a bold flavour that contrasted beautifully with the salsa on top. It’s the kind of dish that hits you with complexity in every bite but never feels overthought.

One of the pleasant surprises was the Sashimi, something you can just tell the chef is very proud of. Beautifully presented Smoked Salmon, Scallop, Yellowfin Tuna, with all the perfect accompaniment of Wasabi, Japanese Horseradish, and Pickled Ginger. Pair this with some of the restaurant’s abundant wines and you have yourself a dish to remember. Drinks at Rick Stein are equally well-executed. The wine list is thoughtful, featuring plenty of coastal whites, light reds, and sparkling options that pair perfectly with the menu. The cocktails are inventive without being gimmicky—the “British Bramble”, made with Gin and Blackberries was a personal favourite. It felt like summer in a glass. Dessert was a bit of a surprise. We weren’t expecting much beyond the usual suspects, but the Chocolate Fondant was perfectly executed, silky, and paired with the most delicious and indulgent pistachio ice cream. It was a satisfying and elegant end to the meal. Service deserves its own spotlight. The staff were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and never intrusive. Our server gave sincere recommendations, knew the provenance of the seafood, and checked in just enough to make us feel cared for without ever rushing us. You could tell there was a shared pride in the place that extended from the kitchen to the front of house. Whether you’re a seafood connoisseur or just someone who appreciates a beautifully cooked meal, Rick Stein delivers an experience that feels both special and grounded. It’s

The Royal Engineers Museum

he Royal Engineers Museum is the world’s foremost museum of military engineering. Housed in our striking Grade II listed building in Gillingham, Kent, our internationally significant collection is a testament to the ingenuity, creativity and determination that have shaped both military history and the modern world. Wars are not won by courage alone. Victory is achieved through planning, innovation, logistics, perseverance and adaptation. This spirit of innovation is brought vividly to life in the Museum’s current War Winning Engineering exhibition. Drawing on original plans, artefacts and archival material, the exhibition explores the extraordinary story of the Mulberry Harbours, the temporary floating ports developed to support the D-Day landings in Normandy. The exhibition highlights the immense challenge facing Allied planners during the Second World War; how to land and sustain a vast invasion force without control of a major French port. The solution was audacious. Engineers designed and constructed two artificial harbours, incorporating pioneering components such as Phoenix caissons, Whale roadways, Beetle pontoons and Bombardon breakwaters. Mulberry Harbours A & B and these other essential constructions were then towed across the channel toward their pivotal debarkation points at Omaha and Gold beaches respectively. These remarkable structures enabled millions of troops, vehicles and tonnes of materiel to enter mainland Europe, playing a critical role in the success of the Allied campaign. Thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, thousands of wartime blueprints, models and engineering records are being conserved and digitised, resulting in unprecedented public access to one of Britain’s greatest engineering achievements. In celebrating these achievements, the Royal Engineers Museum

reminds us that engineering is often history’s hidden force. The War Winning Engineering exhibition is not simply a look back at wartime innovation. As a registered charity, The Fan Museum is committed to the management of their unique collections and restored Grade II* Listed Early Georgian period townhouses for the enjoyment of the public and future generations. In the heart of the World Heritage Site of Greenwich, these townhouses are home to a diverse collection of fans dating from 12th century to present day. The ground floor houses the permanent displays, focusing on different types of fans and their materials, and is supported by an extensive audio guide. The upper floor changes throughout the year, as temporary exhibitions are curated to thematically display the collections (including that of Founder and Director Mrs Hélène

Alexander), to showcase other objects from collections across the globe, and to spotlight master fan makers. Thus, exhibitions are collaborative with artists, collectors, and other institutions. The Fan Museum is honoured to have Her Majesty Queen Camilla as its Patron and is delighted that she has loaned two fans from her personal collection to its current exhibition, Monarchy: An Exhibition of Royal Fans. The exhibition displays a wide selection of fans from 18th century to the present day, fans that depict royals or have passed through the hands of British and other European monarchies. Often, these fans were made as commissions or commercial souvenirs to celebrate or commemorate royal events and figures. Built to marry the townhouses together, the enchanting Orangery, decorated with a hand painted Trompe L’oeil mural by artist Jane Barraclough, makes an elegant venue for events and celebrations. Throughout the year, the Orangery is the backdrop of a variety of workshops related to fan making practices, encouraging artistic and cultural collaboration. TEST CRICKETER JORDAN COX: FROM FELSTED TO THE OVAL

hen Jordan Cox made his Test Cricket debut at the Oval in June 2026, he became the latest in a long line of sportsmen and women to progress from Felsted School in Essex to representing their countries at the highest level. Cox is brimming with confidence, as you would expect of one of the most exciting young cricketers to emerge in recent years. The 25-year-old’s undeniable talent – and a remarkable double-century for Essex at the start of the season – led to his selection in England’s starting XI for the Second Test against New Zealand in the summer of 2026. His international debut marked a significant milestone in a career that always seemed destined for greatness. Though born in Margate, Kent, Cox was educated at Felsted School, the independent boarding school in north Essex. He quickly found himself at home in the practice nets and on the immaculate school cricket pitch, The Front, where his developing skills were nurtured through Felsted’s élite cricket programme under former England Test cricketer Jason Gallian, now Felsted’s Director of Cricket.

ome of the most valuable learning experiences do not happen while children are sitting at a desk. Outdoor learning allows children to move, explore, experiment and make sense of the world around them in ways that can be difficult to replicate in a traditional classroom. At Broomwood, we are fortunate to have extensive outdoor spaces carefully designed for the different ages and stages of our children. Our playgrounds are not simply places for breaktimes; they are an important part of the learning environment and are used throughout the school day. Being outdoors naturally encourages children to run, climb,

balance and explore. These activities develop strength, coordination and physical confidence, but the benefits go much further. When children navigate stepping stones, test themselves on a balance beam or try a new piece of equipment, they learn to assess risk, overcome uncertainty and persevere. Outdoor learning also has a positive impact on children’s wellbeing. Time outside can improve mood and support emotional regulation, giving children space to move, reset and return to their learning with renewed focus. For some, a practical outdoor activity can unlock engagement in a way that a classroombased lesson may not. That is why we regularly take lessons outside at Broomwood. Children might practise counting and addition using objects found in the playground, explore different materials and textures, or create mud pies and magical potions in the mud kitchen. While it may look like simple play, these activities offer rich opportunities for learning. Children talk, share ideas, take turns and solve problems together until their creation is ready to be served, often to the class teacher. Through imaginative play, they develop vocabulary, confidence and communication skills while having great fun. Our outdoor areas include theatres and a stage for storytelling, costumes for role play, tuff trays for sensory exploration and fine motor development, and larger equipment to support gross motor skills. There are also quieter areas where children can pause, reflect or enjoy a calmer moment with a friend. We have seen first-hand how outdoor learning strengthens focus, independence, confidence and social skills. WHERE CRAFT MEETS THE WATER How a Belgian maker turned the overlooked diving board into functional art

beautiful pool is rarely the work of a single decision. Architecture, landscape, stone, water and light are brought together patiently. Yet the last object placed at the water’s edge is often treated as an afterthought. Mikel Tube began with a different question: what if the diving board could complete the setting rather than interrupt it?
