Winter on Brownsea Island is not just a quiet season, it’s when the real work of conservation comes alive. While the island closes its gates to the public from mid-December to late January, behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers keeps its unique habitats healthy and thriving. From woodlands and heathlands to lagoons, every corner of Brownsea plays a vital role as a haven for wildlife, including its famous red squirrels, rare insects, and a wide variety of nesting birds. Situated in Poole, Thirteen is a new family-run restaurant which has a stylish ambience bringing together exquisite food and great service. The restaurant doors were opened in 2023 after a total refurbishment of the premises. Thirteen features contemporary British cuisine combining seasonal locally sourced and freshly foraged ingredients, wherever possible, with innovative cooking techniques from around the world. The menu includes carefully sourced fish, meat and game but also celebrates the importance of vegetables, fruits and fungi. Many vegetables, fruits, edible flowers and herbs are sourced from our own kitchen garden at the restaurant. The New Forest National Park Authority’s Behind the Scenes campaign highlights the rare habitats and wildlife that live in the New Forest, and the experts and volunteers working in the background to ensure it survives for future generations. These people, whose stories are being shared over the coming months, have been wonderfully photographed by internationally renowned photographer Steve Poole.

While the island closes its gates to the public from mid-December to late January, behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers keeps its unique habitats healthy and thriving. From woodlands and heathlands to lagoons, every corner of Brownsea plays a vital role as a haven for wildlife, including its famous red squirrels, rare insects, and a wide variety of nesting birds. The winter months are, in fact, one of the most important times for hands-on habitat management. With fewer visitors and minimal

wildlife disturbance, volunteers can carry out essential conservation tasks that set the stage for a successful spring and summer. Clearing scrub and bracken, removing invasive species, and maintaining paths and boardwalks are just a few of the tasks undertaken. These efforts may sound physically demanding, but the reward is immeasurable: knowing that your work directly contributes to the health and resilience of a nationally important nature reserve. Brownsea Island’s varied habitats require ongoing attention. Woodland management ensures that light can reach the forest floor, encouraging native wildflowers and supporting insects that, in turn, provide food for birds. Heathland restoration prevents the encroachment of scrub and invasive species, maintaining the open landscapes that are crucial for species such as the Dartford warbler and other ground-nesting birds. Even the lagoons and marshes benefit from careful upkeep, ensuring that water levels and vegetation support amphibians, wading birds, and aquatic invertebrates. Every task, large or small, has a meaningful impact on the island’s ecosystem.
The “Brownsea Volunteers” programme is organized by Dorset Wildlife Trust in partnership with the National Trust. Typically, volunteers meet on Fridays during winter, although a commitment of once a month is often sufficient for those with busy schedules. A typical volunteer day runs from around 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with breaks for tea, coffee, and biscuits—a welcome pause in the middle of hard work. All necessary tools and safety equipment are provided, but volunteers should come prepared with warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy boots. Packed lunches and a healthy dose of enthusiasm are recommended for anyone hoping to make the most of the day outdoors. For those travelling from further afield, including London, the journey itself can be part of the adventure. A scenic ferry trip from Poole or Lilliput transports volunteers to the island, offering a chance to appreciate the stunning natural surroundings before stepping onto the conservation site. Once on Brownsea, volunteers find themselves in a unique environment where every action, from lifting a handful of bracken to securing a boardwalk, plays a tangible role in safeguarding the island’s wildlife. Beyond the practical conservation work, volunteering on Brownsea Island provides other invaluable benefits. It’s an opportunity to connect with nature in a direct and meaningful way, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. ON THE COAST: THE NEW FOREST’S FEATHERED VISITORS

s the temperature drops and the days grow shorter, the coastline of the New Forest National Park becomes a bustling winter home for thousands of birds. The 26 miles between Milford-on-Sea and Calshot provide a vital coastal refuge thanks to its diverse habitats including mudflats, saltmarsh, shingle beaches, lagoons, and estuaries. These areas provide rich feeding grounds full of shellfish, worms and eelgrass: essential food to help birds recover from long migrations and build up energy for the return journey in spring.

Brent geese: Around 25,000 of these small, dark geese fly from arctic Siberia to feed and rest here, making up between 10 & 13% of the world’s population, and about 30% of the whole UK population. Curlew, snipe, and lapwing: Some of our ground-nesting birds head to the coast in winter for a holiday, leaving their breeding sites on the New Forest’s heathlands behind. Black-tailed godwit: Often seen in large flocks at places like Lymington-Keyhaven Nature Reserve and Mount Lake and Sturt Pond where they feed at low tide. Wigeon: Colourful ducks that arrive in big numbers from Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia to feed in the marshes. Golden plover: Feeds and rests out on the marshes, but good numbers (200-300) sometimes can be seen on wet farmland fields and often west of Keyhaven Harbour or in flight.

Organisations across the Forest work together to protect endangered species by creating quiet zones around the most sensitive nesting and wintering bird locations. Ground nesting coastal birds need exactly the same protection as rare forest-dwelling ground nesting birds. Rangers from local organisations volunteer to spend time along the coast, helping visitors to learn more about and protect our nesting and wintering birds. Volunteers are often on hand to direct visitors to new signs in the Hurst Spit Nature Reserve area. The Lymington and Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a particularly popular spot for waders, such as curlew, oystercatcher and redshank. Brent geese flock in their thousands from their Siberian breeding grounds. The aptly named spoonbills have also been seen more in recent years. It’s important to admire this wildlife from the designated tracks, keep dogs under close control and not let them chase the birds. It may not seem like much when the birds fly off, but repeated disturbance can exhaust them and mean they don’t survive the migration back to their breeding ground in the spring. newforestnpa.gov.uk

The twice-daily tidal cycle and the fact that many birds can’t feed when it’s dark means that the feeding time-slots are restricted. Birds are particularly wary of dogs that stray from well-used paths – an off-lead dog on the foreshore can create mass panic, lost feeding or roosting time and a waste of flying energy searching for somewhere safe to land. When arriving on our shores, birds will often weigh 50% less than when they set off on their migration to the Solent and need time to recover. During their first weeks here, they need to be completely undisturbed to feed and rest, otherwise they are in chronic danger of starvation. Wrapping up warm and heading down as the tide comes in is a simple, refreshing way to start the day, whether you’re with family, friends or four‑legged companions. The restaurant doors were opened on 13th September 2023 after a total refurbishment of the premises. Thirteen features contemporary British cuisine combining seasonal locally sourced and freshly foraged ingredients, wherever possible, with innovative cooking techniques from around the world. The menu includes carefully sourced fish, meat and game but also celebrates the importance of vegetables, fruits and fungi. Many vegetables, fruits, edible flowers and herbs are sourced from our own kitchen garden at the restaurant. Numerous sauces and stocks will be based on vegetarian or vegan ingredients so dishes can easily accommodate dietary preferences with advance notice. We offer wine pairings with our tasting menus or diners can select wines from our wine list. Our evening service features a signature 13 plate tasting menu consisting of individual plates, starting with a series of snacks, followed by a selection of larger savoury plates, and concluding with desserts. he New Forest National Park Authority’s Behind the Scenes campaign highlights the rare habitats and wildlife that live in the New Forest, and the experts and volunteers working in the background to ensure it survives for future generations. These people, whose stories are being shared over the coming months, have been wonderfully photographed by internationallyrenowned photographer Steve Poole. Erika Dovey is a New Forest National Park Authority ranger and a New Forest commoner. Commoners have ancient rights linked to their land or property to release animals – ponies, cattle, sheep, donkeys and pigs - to graze on the New Forest. Commoners are ordinary people with an extraordinary commitment to the New Forest landscape and its traditions. INSIDE AARDMAN: Wallace & Gromit and Friends 12 February – 15 November 2026
Y
oung V&A has announced its third exhibition, Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends. Marking Aardman’s 50th anniversary in 2026, it is created primarily for children and families. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the world of Aardman – creators of Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Morph, and more – and unpacks the making of some of the most well known and loved characters of all time. Opening to coincide with the studio’s 50th anniversary year, Inside Aardman explores the storytelling and craft that brings their familiar and fantastical worlds from the sketchbook to the screen. The exhibition takes visitors behind the scenes of the animation process, from idea development and storyboarding to model making, filming and production, and post-production. Over 150 items will be on show, including Aardman’s early character sketches, concept art, puppets, character ‘bibles’, props, scripts, set models, as well as several optical illusion toys and early examples of stop-motion animation from the V&A’s collection. Highlights include development sketches for Morph, early character ideas for Wallace & Gromit, a hand-drawn storyboard from The Wrong Trousers (1993) train chase, as well as never before displayed objects such as the duo’s motorbike and sidecar from Vengeance Most Fowl (2024). The exhibition features set pieces from Aardman’s incredible body of work, including Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023), Robin Robin (2019) and Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out (1989). Inside Aardman will give
young visitors the opportunity to try their hand at different parts of stop-motion animation, guiding them on how to make their own at home using everyday materials and inspiration. While journeying through the exhibition, visitors will be able to explore storyboarding, design characters, light sets, create Live Action Videos and watch a selection of animations made by children. 2026 sees Aardman celebrate its 50th anniversary with a roaster of events and celebrations highlighting the craft and legacy of the studio, including the launch of a new movie, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom in the autumn. We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach. Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences? I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens, from barefoot escapes on private islands to cultural weekends in Europe, and even multi-generational cruises or villas. It’s these little things that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one. Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging? Time, mostly. PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

ere at St Christopher’s The Hall, we recently launched a new initiative that is already making a powerful difference to our pupils, The Horizon Programme. It was created in response to something teachers and parents are noticing everywhere: children are growing up in an increasingly digital world, and many of the practical skills, social habits and deeper patterns of thinking that once developed naturally are becoming less familiar. The Horizon Programme is our way of bringing those essential experiences back into daily school life. We see bright, capable children who can access information instantly, yet sometimes hesitate when faced with openended problems. Many find it challenging to maintain focus in a world full of digital distractions, and collaborative, face-to-
face work can require more practice than it once did. Opportunities to build, create, explore and persevere, cornerstones of childhood, are becoming less frequent in a screen-led culture. Horizon responds to this directly. Each week, pupils in Years 1–6 take part in purposeful, hands-on sessions built around four pillars: Character, Leadership, Sustainability and Life Skills. These experiences help children rediscover the joy of working together, thinking deeply and developing the real-world confidence that cannot be learned through a screen. The early impact has been remarkable. Pupils talk about Horizon sessions with genuine excitement. Teachers are observing stronger teamwork, improved perseverance and calmer, more intentional engagement. The programme has brought a renewed sense of curiosity, creativity and focus into the school week.

As the year continues, we will move into a range of practical Life Skills, the small but important tasks children once learned naturally but do not always encounter today. Pupils will learn how to change a bed, tie a tie, make a cup of tea safely, use simple tools, read basic instructions, plan a small budget, and even sew on a button. These may seem modest, yet they foster independence, confidence and a quiet sense of capability that stays with children for life. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.

Designed by Yiannis Stylianou of Studio Ypsilon, the home balances architectural restraint with a quietly expressive interior language, creating a space that feels personal, layered, and enduring. The property sits close to the historic St John’s Wood Barracks, once headquarters of the Royal Horse Artillery. Rather than overt references, the design responds with subtlety. A darker, more atmospheric palette grounds the interior, allowing heritage, contemporary art, and bespoke craftsmanship to coexist with ease. The result is a home that feels timeless without being formal, and modern without chasing trend. Bespoke design lies at the heart of the project. Custom joinery and furniture were developed specifically for the space, ensuring proportion, flow, and material integrity throughout. A sculptural bar cabinet anchors the living area, while carefully selected upholstered pieces introduce softness and familiarity. Fabrics by Le Cuona and Holland & Sherry add richness and tactility, reinforcing a sense of quiet
