How about parking your boat at home? No need to build a dock, to commute to busy marinas or to worry about the tide, this amphibious boat is boating made simple. The innovative “mobility system” is equipped with a set of tracks that stow flush into the Iguana’s hull at a touch of a button, while the outboard engines power the hull effortlessly onto the plane. Since 2008, the French shipyard, Iguana Yachts has offered unrestricted boating journeys to waterfront property owners around the world. The idea originated in Normandy to put an end to the constraints of launching a boat from a trailer. Iguana owners can embark from home at a moment’s notice and return safely to store the boat on land, away from the elements. Many Iguana owners use their boat like a car to commute! DISCRETION
IS THE BETTER PART OF VALOUR THE PROPERTY MARKET HAS CHANGED ASTRONOMICALLY IN THE PAST FEW DECADES, BRINGING IN A NEW ERA OF OFF-MARKET AND PRIVATE SALES. LAST YEAR, HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL REVEALED IN AN ARTICLE IN THE TELEGRAPH, AN ASTONISHING ONE IN FOUR SALES ABOVE £1 MILLION IN LONDON HAD TAKEN PLACE “OFF-MARKET”.
S
o, why are off-market sales rapidly gaining traction? While there are many benefits associated with private sales, for the sake of this article, we will be focusing on the primary factors driving the recent surge in popularity. The first is discreetness. Unlike conventional methods, details of your property or site are not posted on portals, paraded in agents’ windows, or advertised online and in newspapers only to attract the attention of a flock of uncommitted buyers. Instead, sales are made through direct contact, ensuring your property or site is sold swiftly to a reputable buyer. Private sales generate a sense of exclusivity, boosting the likelihood of a quick and hassle-free transaction. In comparison, traditional property advertisements have become somewhat outdated and, in many cases, ineffective. The best buyers and developers no longer search through pages
and pages of advertisements for their next opportunity. Instead, they simply contact SJD and let us know about the types of sites they are interested in. We then add them to our client list and contact them when presented with a property or site that meets their requirements. At SJD we work to source the right developers for your property, meaning you do not waste your time with unsuitable buyer. All of our sales are made discreetly, protecting both your identity and your individual interests. Since the company was founded over 15 years ago, SJD has worked to build relationships with reputable developers and buyers that are looking for sites and properties throughout the UK providing a truly bespoke service. SJD: If you have a site or property that you would like to sell off-market, please contact us today at steve@sjd-projects.com

or the players, supporters, entertainers and sponsors – the Sandbanks polo weekend is the place to see and be seen. The serial blue flag beach that separates the metropolis of Poole & Bournemouth with the dramatic Jurassic coast is home to the British Beach Polo Championships, otherwise known as Sandpolo. Each year in July the crowds are enthused over upping their glamour game in ‘summer beach elegant’, polo players eager to battle with their steeds to score the winning goal and so too do the brands look for unique opportunities to have a share of the audience’s affections and be part of the raft of publicity that accompanies an event of this standing. Polo, is inextricably linked to being an excuse to drink champagne and Moet Chandon is, for the 6th year, the event’s nectar of choice. The wonderfully blush, Whispering Angel, another Moet Hennessy brand, will be back in July to quench thirst and to try and retain the Sandpolo trophy. Then there’s Sunseeker, a natural partner of Sandpolo and who have been involved since 2008. Iguana Yachts has proven popular on the South Coast of England as a perfect solution for waterfront houses with tidal restrictions. The mobility system can tackle soft sand as well as shingles and steep slopes. Rather than wheels, the Iguana engineers opted for tracks, which have a lower ground pressure allowing it to tackle softer surfaces. The hull form has a sharp entry point at the bow, while the deep V hull planes seamlessly through rougher waters. The tracks when stowed sit outboard above the waterline and reduce roll for a solid, comfortable and dry ride that you would expect to find on much larger sports cruisers. The 9.2m Iguana Commuter is the flagship model and displays the very best of the factory’s talents. There are lots of great features on the Commuter that are controlled through the touch screen management system, including the convertible hard top and whisper quiet all electric mobility system. This model benefits from a cabin with a double berth and integrated electric head. Reaching a top speed of 55 knots with a comfortable cruising speed of 30 knots, the Iguana Commuter is a boat you will use all year round. Iguana Yachts offer RIBs as well as sports fishing boats, centre consoles and cabin cruisers that can be fully customized. The Iguana is available for sea trials through their UK agent Berthon International or sales representative, Toby Scruby so give them a call to test this unique patented technology.

nter the world of superheroes at the Foundling Museum, Bloomsbury, in the first major exhibition to explore the representation of foundlings, orphans, adoptees, and foster children in comics from around the globe. DC’s Superman, who was found by his adoptive parents, is one of many comic heroes who are orphans: Spider-Man’s parents die in a plane crash; Batman’s parents are killed in a street robbery; and Black Panther – whose mother dies soon after childbirth and whose father is killed – is known as ‘the Orphan King’. Marvel’s X-Men experience both discrimination and social ostracisation. The superheroes’ early life experiences impact on their roles and the stance they take over good and evil in their comic lives. Looking beyond the traditional ‘superhero’ genre the exhibition also includes characters from early newspaper comic strips, Japanese Manga and contemporary graphic novel protagonists. Historical newspapers, original artwork and contemporary digital work will be on display, as well as examples of international comics rarely exhibited in the UK. MY ART AND THE EFFECT OF THE PANDEMIC 40 APRIL 2022
IMAGE: @RORY_PHOTO
have been living in Poole on and off for the past 10 years and I explore the natural world around me. I see painting as an intuitive process. I often spend months at a time observing my choice of subject matter before painting in order to bring the atmosphere of the landscape back into the studio and on to my canvases. There is something very special about this place. I love living here. The smell of the pines, all the colours between dawn and dusk, the sunsets, the residential architecture, the people and their zest for outdoor living and water-sports, the timeless beauty of the Isle of Purbeck, the fresh air and the autumnal colours of the ancient New Forest. After living in the South of France (Antibes) for three years, sandwiched between London for two and three years, there is no other place in the UK I would prefer calling home. Nature is fascinating to me, especially in extreme circumstances, such as storms. I am particularly fascinated by the sea, and how it offers such an interesting base for experimentation with painting and paints. In painting I feel very strongly that energy must be met with energy. By this I mean big seas and a powerful subject matter benefits from energetic, physical and confident painting, which usually includes allowing the paint to have its own way without using a brush. Dripping, pouring, throwing, lifting, shaking and so on, all add to these involuntary effects. Through these processes and techniques I hope to capture the power and atmosphere of the environment that I have placed myself into. I paint what gets my heart beating fast as I know that way, I will put my all into it! Windy, rainy, stormy days, and movement in nature, strong colour contrasts in the sky and in the sea; I quite often pick the subjects that I know my materials and processes complement. When I start painting, I become as inspired by the materials and processes as I do from the subject itself. To get inspiration, I head to remote areas and walk for sometimes weeks at a time with my bivvy bag and fishing gear to live amongst nature and to have access to all the changing colours. My paintings start out rather pre-planned, but then they constantly change. With the techniques I use, it is very rare for a painting to end up the way it started. I make all my stretchers myself and then think of an image for that specific canvas, whether it be from a selection of photos or a sketch or both. Then I start painting, and because a lot of my process is to leave the paint to paint the canvas itself with me just adding energy, colour and different types of paint, I never know what it will end up looking like. I paint with a method that I call ‘Involuntarylism’, in which my knowledge and past experiences emerges through an instinctive approach to the application of materials. Involuntarylism is subject to me ‘puppeteering’ the paint, that is, using gravity and learned knowledge of the materials and past experiences to create the painting. The artist’s involvement is purely to manipulate the paint, canvas, colours and consistencies so as to exaggerate as strongly as possible the resulting organic textures and marks. This method arose purely because of enjoyment, surprise and a sense of risk that I am cursed with! I love watching all the materials
start eating at each other, being repelled by each other. There are always great surprises, and I am often mesmerised watching the paint do its thing. I have been painting with gold leaf recently. I spend hours layering the gold leaf up on a giant canvas; over 200 leaves. Then I mix all the paints I need and within 20 minutes of energetic throwing, splashing and manipulating it over the top I know whether its success or failure. If I mix the paints wrongly, then the gold leaf will disappear forever and I would have to start again. The paint that I throw over the top is meant to separate, showing the gold leaf below. That’s probably the best feeling I get when I paint, a scenario like this going right and then I just stare. A huge risk paying off – great feeling!’ The gold leaf works well in contrast to the white acrylic making it look dark when the gold shines. Using this technique, some of my paintings take weeks, some days and others a year. It’s all to do with whether I am happy with it or not. I use oils as my main painting medium, but added to this, I use acrylic paints and have been known to use bitumen in some of my paintings. Brushes are just a tool for me to mix the paint. I quite often get frustrated looking for a big brush, so I sometimes use my studio broom to paint with too. I love the Impressionists and van Gogh, I also love Picasso’s work, Gustav Klimt, and when I was younger, Kurt Jackson. It wasn’t so much for the appearance of their work or that I wanted mine to look like theirs, it was just a feeling I got from looking at their stuff that made me want to make too, but in my own way. Just like music does to me now, I’m inspired by someone doing something creative and succeeding. I rarely take commissions. If I don’t have the urge to paint something, then I don’t really want to paint it as it probably won’t be any good anyway as there is no passion behind it. If someone were to just give me a size of canvas to work to and an example of one of my recent paintings l would be happy to accept the commission. My work does get exhibited a lot. It gets taken to major art fairs around the world including Hong Kong and Singapore and to London too. Unfortunately the pandemic did put an end to all my exhibitions around the world. It forced gallery doors to close which in turn pushed art lovers to contact the artists directly. Through Instagram a generous scheme called Artist Support Pledge was set up in support of artists and makers. The concept was a simple one. Post images of your work on Instagram to sell for no more than £200 for anyone to buy. Every time the artist reaches £1000 worth of sales they pledge to buy another artists work for £200 and so on. Over 20 million pounds exchanged hands during the pandemic and still counting. It was a huge success and a real boost to artists everywhere, not just on a financial level but on a moral level showing that there was huge support for the arts during this trying time. Moreover, the pandemic was a time of vast productivity for me. Almost all of life’s normal distractions weren’t available so for the first time in a long while I was able to make without interruptions and more importantly to be able to think about my practice non-stop throughout this period. My practice was able to evolve and develop more rapidly and I was happy with the direction it was taking. I

was painting my local beaches, the Sandbanks sunsets and the fabulous maritime pines that are scattered around our area which were such a short walk away from my front door. All the inspiration I needed was on my doorstep which was handy as we couldn’t go far. However, there is no worse a feeling as producing what you view as your best work to date for it not to get seen. So my first objective, after the inspiration had warn off, was to get my paintings seen. The idea was to rent my own shop somewhere for a Pop-up exhibition. I managed to secure a space on Westover Road in Bournemouth which saw over a thousand people come and have a look at my paintings during the three month period I was the proprietor. The Lockdowns have been a real struggle for the arts sector and with this exhibition I wanted to not only show off my work but perhaps give hope and a bit of inspiration to other artists wanting to get their work seen. The time is right to get in touch with local shop owners/estate agents and ask for short term rentals to bring a bit of creativity, colour and optimism to our high streets as they are starting to look a little sparse and uninspiring.

The model village owners decided to sell amid fears the piece could be stolen and sold it at auction on Thursday. Frank and Frances Newsome were delighted with the price fetched, with the money securing the future of the attraction. The stables were signed by Banksy and daubed with the words “Go big or go home”. Newcastle-based Anderson and Garland Auctioneers said there was global interest in the piece, which was bought by a private UK collector. The salesroom’s managing director Julian Thomson said: “From the moment this great story hit the press it grabbed the attention of collectors from across the globe. Interest was high and that ultimately produced plenty of bidders on the day. “There was a fantastic buzz in the saleroom and, after a bidding battle, the hammer finally came down, achieving a great result for the client.” Mr Newsome said: “My family and I are absolutely delighted with the result achieved today. “It’s a fantastic result for the park. “We’ve enjoyed the whole auction experience. “We put our trust in Anderson and Garland and they didn’t let us down.”

St Patrick’s Day with Irish Guards 72 APRIL 2022
T
he Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated St Patrick’s Day with the Irish Guards, but it was an officer’s young daughter who stole the show with her antics. Kate was fittingly dressed in an emerald green outfit for the couple’s visit to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for the St Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks in Aldershot in Hampshire. William is Colonel of the Irish Guards and the event was the first time the Cambridges have been able to celebrate the annual event with the officers and soldiers from the regiment since the pandemic began. During the ceremony, 20-month-old Gaia Money grabbed two bouquets from the duchess and a smiling Kate said: “Shall we swap. Now you have both of them.” When Gaia’s father, Lieutenant Colonel Rob Money, placed his bearskin hat over his daughter’s head, Kate said: “That’s so sweet. Do you fit inside it.” The toddler’s mother Lorraine Money said afterwards: “The duchess was lovely. Gaia took both bouquets and she let her keep them. Gaia has been practising her curtsey at nursery school but failed! “I am from Jamaica and we spoke about Jamaica, as they are going there next week.” The duchess, wearing a green coat by Laura Green and hat by Lock & Co, pinned a sprig of shamrock on the Irish Guards mascot – a two-year-old Irish Wolfhound. The dog, called Turlough Mor, also known as Seamus, and handler Drummer Adam Walsh, stood to attention on the parade ground. Kate wore shamrock on her jacket and William, dressed in a military coat, had a sprig on his cap for the couple’s visit. The duchess handed baskets filled with shamrock sprigs to regimental leaders to hand out to the ranks and she chatted and smiled as she presented officers with the plant – a symbol of Ireland. She told them: “Good morning, have some shamrock. Happy St Patrick’s Day.” The Cambridges begin a tour of the Caribbean on Saturday which will see them visit Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
“The duchess was lovely. Gaia took both bouquets and she let her keep them”
After the visit Gaia’s grandmother Mary Money said: “They both said about how much they are looking forward to Jamaica and Gaia is half Jamaican. “They expressed regret as they had been unable to see the regiment for many years because of serving in Iraq and South Sudan and Covid last year. So it was a great reunion.” Drummer Adam Walsh, handler of mascot Seamus, said about speaking to the duchess: “She said ‘I hope I put the shamrock on right this time and I helped her and we carried on. “I was very excited as this was the first time in three years we have seen them. “Seamus behaved himself. I was afraid he was going to let us down (but) I was more nervous than he was. He was fantastic.”

FASTING FOR RAMADAN, AND FOR LIFE Dr Ravleen Sabharwal MBBS BSc MRCP MRCGP DRCOG The London General Practice
R
amadan is a special time of spirituality, mindfulness and selfreflection. During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink water from dawn until dusk. Fasting is both a physical and spiritual exercise: one learns to limits appetite for food, one is mindful of regular prayer, there is a sense of self-control over thoughts and actions, and one is reminded of humility and piety. There is also a celebration at the break of the fast which is seen as a blessing. Of late, the western medicine has embraced the concept of ‘intermittent fasting’ as evidence mounts that this age-old spiritual tradition is scientifically proven to be beneficial for our physical health.
What happens to our body during a fast?
When we eat, the body digests our meals into nutrients which are absorbed from the gut. The uptake of sugar is controlled by insulin, and so eating triggers a raised insulin level to return our blood sugar to normal levels. A rush of insulin often explains the slump one feels after a heavy meal. This absorbed sugar can be stored in our liver as glycogen. 8 hours into a fast, the body needs to retrieve energy in the form of sugar and the glycogen stores in the liver and broken down to maintain our blood sugar. Some hours after that, glycogen stores in the liver are depleted, and the body start to burn fat to provide a continuous source 74 APRIL 2022
of energy. This stage is known as ketogenesis, or the metabolic switch. . Meanwhile, another process is occurring within our bodies during this time is called ‘Autophagy’. The word autophagy comes from Greek and translated means “to eat oneself: this is a process of self-cleansing. For Muslims in the UK, Ramadan may result in fasts of up to 19 hours, during which it is likely the stages of ketogenesis and autophagy would have started. However, the benefits of fasting are lost with prolonged fasts so it’s important to be guided by your physician.
The benefits of fasting
Scientifically proven better blood sugar, better blood pressure and improved ‘bad’ fats in the blood control Weight loss, and a detox at a cellular level. Boosted mood and mental clarity. Interestingly, fasting is a method of ‘supercharging’ the brain, making it resilient to stress, improving mood, memory and even learning capacity. Anti-ageing properties.
“There is also a celebration at the break of the fast which is seen as a blessing”
Special considerations during Ramadan
How might I feel when I initially start fasting? The first week is tough, but it gets easier from there. There is always a risk that some people

SPRING
BEAUTY TRENDS
These are the hottest catwalkinspired looks of the season, says Katie Wright.
T
he spring/summer fashion season is upon us, and while it might not be warm enough to bust out the shorts and sandals yet, it’s fun to look ahead to the outfits we’ll be wearing soon, inspired by the SS22 catwalks. It’s also time to get excited about all the hot new hair and make-up looks created backstage at the shows, and how we can work them with our wardrobe this season. From retro-inspired tresses to edgy eyeliner and dramatic lipstick, These are the top trends to know about now…
Y2K hair
Back in the early 2000s when GHD hair straighteners first hit the scene, glossy, poker-straight hair was all anyone wanted. Models at Stella McCartney, Chanel and ‘Fendace’ (the Fendi78 APRIL 2022
Versace collaboration show) rocked Y2K locks with, of course, a middle parting (side partings are so 2010s)
Noughties make-up
Noughties-inspired clothing was massive on the SS22 runways and so was make-up from the era, with metallic eyeshadow at Anna Sui and Tom Ford, and shimmery lips at KNWLS. High-shine gloss was another 2000’s throwback, slicked on models’ pouts at Victoria Beckham, Dolce & Gabbana and Blumarine.
Braids
Hair stylists got creative backstage at the shows, crafting all kinds of cool twists and plaits. There were long, rope-like braids at Erdem, face-framing baby braids at Altuzarra, and pigtail twists at Rejina Pyo.
Art attack
Not necessarily a trend you’ll want to recreate exactly as seen on the
catwalks, colourful, avant-garde make-up made a splash at several shows. Nars make-up artist James Kaliardos created incredible starburstshaped designs at Rodarte, there were rainbow motifs at Paul & Joe, and neon ears (yes, ears) at Chet Lo. The placement of these uber-brights might be a bit much for everyday wear, but a sunset-hued smoky eye or wash of fuchsia blush will elevate your summer look.
Dramatic eyeliner
The make-up equivalent of the LBD, razor-sharp feline flicks adorned eyes at Givenchy, Dior, Valentino and more. At the Chanel haute couture show, a dramatic double wing was created with a combination of eye pencil and shadow, while Giambattista Valli took it one step further with a triple liner look.
Hair accessories
It’s not just about how to style your hair this spring, it’s about how you accessorise it. Take your cue from Versace with a Nineties-style headscarf, or select a bold floral corsage like the ones seen at Rixo and Yuhan Wang. Add sparkle to an up-do by stacking a bunch of bejewelled clips and slides, like models at Simone Rocha.
“Noughties-inspired clothing was massive on the SS22 runways and so was make-up from the era, with metallic eyeshadow at Anna Sui and Tom Ford, and shimmery lips at KNWLS”
Grunge glam
A distinct contrast to all that summery colour, some designers went to the dark side for spring, with smudgy smoky eyes and heavily stained lips. Deep berry-toned lips with a glossy finish gave us grungy-glam vibes at Supriya Lele, Coach and Mark Fast. APRIL 2022 79

Why Health Screening is paramount DR PAUL ETTLINGER BM, DRCOG, FRCGP, FRIPH, DOCCMED THE LONDON GENERAL PRACTICE Q. What is Health Screening? Health screening involves the use of tests, physical examinations and advanced investigations to help detect conditions early in people who look or feel well. This is in contrast from diagnostic tests which are done when someone is ill and showing signs or symptoms of a condition. It is important as it can detect disease early in people who do not show any signs and/or symptoms of illness or disease It is the first step to safeguarding your health. Q. Why is it important? Early detection and timely intervention for earlier intervention and treatment of previously unknown conditions. It will help to reduce the risk of complications and the occurrence of more serious diseases such as: • Stroke • Diabetes • Cardiovascular complications • Lung disease and renal failure • Cancers Q. Why should one go for Health Screening if one feels well? Health screening will help to discover if you have particular diseases or conditions, which as yet you do not know. Often there are no signs or symptoms of these diseases. As such, early detection followed by appropriate treatment and control of the condition will result in a better outcome and lower the risk of serious complications. Cancer in particular, is better treated if found early. If symptoms develop at a later stage, the cancer may be at an advanced stage and require more intensive and higher risk therapy. Chronic diseases such as diabetes take time to develop and if detected early can be better managed with less complications and improved long-term outcomes. 82 APRIL 2022
“Health screening will help to discover if you have particular diseases or conditions, which as yet you do not know. Often there are no signs or symptoms of these diseases” Q. Who should be Health Screened? Everyone should be screened at some stage, it just depends at what age one should start. Here at The London General Practice, we tailor the screening package to the individual. All our recommendations are based on the current best practice and clinical guidelines available. Depending on your family history and personal history will lead us to suggest a screening module geared to you. Good health screening does not mean testing for the highest number of conditions or diseases. It should contain relevant tests and not tests that are unnecessary. Doing more tests than is necessary may make one more worried, incur unnecessary costs and result in over diagnosis and over treatment. The London General Practice does not believe in a one size fits all health screening package. Each individual has different
to good health personal, family and medical histories and benefits from different screening tests. However, all our health screenings evaluate for cardiovascular risk, such as: • Obesity • High cholesterol • High blood pressure • Diabetes • And Cancers as appropriate
THE DETAILS The London General Practice 114a Harley Street, London W1G 7JL Tel: 0207 935 1000 Email: info@thelondongeneralpractice.com
Q. Why Should I Screen? Statistics reveal that 30% of the population will die of cancer and a further 30% will die of heart attack and stroke. These conditions can and should be screened for. Heart attacks and strokes do not occur spontaneously.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND WELLNESS
Naturally leading a healthy lifestyle is paramount. This can help to delay or prevent primary silent disease and lowers the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
GENETICS AND FAMILY HISTORY
The primary causes of these are: • Diabetes • High cholesterol • High blood pressure • Obesity • Lack of exercise Men are also more prone to heart disease. Here at The London General Practice, we will apply evidence based clinical guidelines to determine your risk of heart disease and stroke and dependent on this risk will lead us to whether you require further tests such as: • CT coronary calcium score • Carotid Doppler study • Functional imaging of the heart
Screening can also look at specific health issues. This is an opportunity to bring up any concerns or worries you have in the consultation, these can be expressed, investigated and identified.
However, genetics and family history play an important part and it is possible that even if you have a healthy lifestyle, you are at an increased risk. Genetics plays a strong part. Here at the London General Practice, we don’t just perform a panel of unknown and unclear genetic tests, we refer you to world-leading experts for genetic counseling with appropriate testing and clear advice.

CANCER
Patients who have their cancers detected at stage one have survival rates 80% or even higher than later detection. Stage 1 cancers are unlikely to have symptoms. Early detection through our advanced health screening pathways will help to identify any risk and treat appropriately. Once the disease reaches stage three or four, survival rates can drop to just 50% or even lower as in 5% for more aggressive cancers. APRIL 2022 83

It’s ok to err and make mistakes. Because, well, it might just set you on a new, more interesting course. The poster boy for such thinking is scientist Andre Geim whose playful “Friday Night Experiments” lead to the discovery of graphene and a rather unexpected Nobel Prize. It’s with similar abandon that designers have begun concocting bold new forms for everyday things. A floor lamp that looks like a snow globe. Or else a sofa shaped like an iceberg. The best part about these designs is that they tend to go where other styles can’t. The VL Studio Floor Lamp, for example, fits perfectly well
on a bookcase. While the Albero Bookcase by Poltrona Frau can also serve as a bonafide room divider. It comes back to a maxim that many a startup has used to try and help canalise breakthroughs: What would this object look like if it was easy? Free from any idea of form or function that has tethered it in the past?
or discover a Secret Garden with Poltrona Frau. Many of the pieces have also been specifically designed to be used indoors, too — symbolising the final erosion of any boundaries between indoors or out. The best so far include the Bohemian ‘72 Lounge collection, as well as the perennially popular Panton Dining Chair.
The classics reloaded
Design goes full circle
This season, not even the classics could escape this whimsical impulse with serendipitous new finishes being unveiled on everything from Le Corbusier’s LC6 Table to Flos’ 265 Wall Light. The desire seems to be less about reinvention and more an investigation into how we can make these works as fresh as possible — including updating any lacquers so that they tread more lightly on the Earth. It’s a theme that’s been widely explored at Danish design house Fritz Hansen as they prepare to celebrate their 150th anniversary with a roster of new-look styles. Among our favourites are the Fri and Ro Lounge Chairs — complete with speckled new bouclé upholstery that celebrates the kaleidoscopic colours found in nature.
Heritage brands step out out
For some brands, the edict of a brave new world meant swapping the sanctuary of the lounge for the lushness of nature. Unshackled from their usual context, they promise to help us live in the garden with new comfort and flair, with options to sit among the clouds at Gubi,
The last story is one we’ve been tracking ever since 2017. Call it what you will, curves are everywhere. And they’re not just restricted to soft furnishings, either. Amid the cornucopia of sinuous styles are loop-the-loop dining chairs. Sweeping desks. And even the odd circular bookcase. Part of the impetus for this sumptuous styling is almost certainly traceable to all the undulating shapes being explored in the Metaverse. For whether it’s fashion, furniture or a Charlotte Taylor render, hard edges are out — and our homes are all the more hypnotic for it. chaplins.co.uk APRIL 2022 89

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON on being inspired by English nature for his new homes collection and his love of painting SAM WYLIE-HARRIS CHATS TO THE DESIGNER ABOUT HIS FAVOURITE PIECES AND WHY CREATIVITY IS HIS HAPPY PLACE.
F
amous for his flamboyant fashions on the catwalk, bold designs and feather peacock prints, interior designer Matthew Williamson says his latest collection for John Lewis feels like a lovely tick. “If you were to say, ‘What would be your dream job?’ One would be the John Lewis collaboration because I think it really sort of cements what I’ve been trying to do for a few years. “It’s a solid proposition with a very respected, known brand,” says the Manchester-born designer. It’s been two years in the making, “So a reasonably long, very enjoyable, creative process for me,” notes Williamson. And it’s the largest designer homeware collaboration of its kind for the department store, with 90 artfully curated pieces spanning a variety of homewares, from cushions to bedding to mirrors and lighting – decorative, eclectic and joyful. “The brief was really open to be honest,” reflects Williamson. “Obviously, I’ve been in design my whole adult life, and fashion into interiors more recently.” He closed the chapter on his 20 year plus
90 APRIL 2022
fashion career about seven years ago when he decided to take the leap and fully immerse himself in the world of interior design. “So there’s quite a lot of history,” he continues. “There’s a sort of rich pot if you like, and I think it’s that they [John Lewis] were drawn to, as they recognised it’s quite a different DNA to their DNA. I think they saw I could bring a much more decorative element to the John Lewis table, if you like,” he observes. The collection is inspired by the great British outdoors, but also further afield. The 50-year-old – who lives with his partner Joseph Velosa and their daughter Skye – in Mallorca, says he’s often drawn to different cultures and countries that have a very rich palette. “You know, ornate decoration, so strangely or not, I decided with this collection to stay rooted in the UK and therefore, look at what I started to say in my head was ‘doorstop design.’ “So whether that be an English meadow or foraging in a hedgerow, or looking at a starlit sky at night, or the quintessential English country garden, all those very sort of English touch points of nature were my inspiration.” Despite being in Spain for the majority of
HOME & GARDEN
lockdown, Williamson says, “I’m England born and bred, so it wasn’t too much of a leap to imagine. So yeah, an English-based design collection, but I did it in Spain.” Alongside beautiful blooms, signature peacock prints, butterflies and floral meadows to inspire and leave a lasting impression, there’s also a focus on woodland themes, hacienda-style textiles and exuberant touches such as leopard print and exotic bedding sets. “I’ve lived in Spain for six years now. So during that time, my work has definitely had a more shall we say, rustic approach. A more sort of authentic Spanish quality to it. “If you’re going to generalise I would say India, Spain and the UK are the three consistent places in the world I look to for inspiration. I love that melting pot of those three countries.” With the aim to create an artistic interplay between stand-out pieces and Williamson’s eclectic aesthetic, all the products (priced from £16 to £250) prompt a second look – and can effortlessly be introduced to existing schemes to elevate the every day, or by combining colour with comfort. “There’re two mirrors I love in particular, ” says Williamson. “One’s like a gilded peacock mirror. It’s sort of a gold frame. It’s pretty large scale and it has two ornately carved peacocks. So that’s a real statement piece that would elevate any space. It’s kind of grand, it’s a talking point. It’s a little bit whimsical – it’s definitely got a real character.” He says he also loves another mirror made out of a cast iron frame and finished in a glossy pillar box red.
92 APRIL 2022
“It’s made up of a sort of arrangement of twigs, metal twigs, and it’s such a cool, contemporary, modern piece. So those two mirrors are definitely on my list of things I want to have myself.” “I’d probably say the lights as well. They’re these gorgeous dome, sort of spheres that you’d see in bars all around the world, quite classic glass domes. I reworked those into a mint green colouration and they’re also a favourite.” And as he points out, then there’s the bedding within the collection, as well as lots of cushions and quilts and so on. “I definitely would have one of those printed bed sets to enliven a bedroom.” Today, Williamson is slowly but surely building his portfolio and spends 50% of his time on interior design projects, commercial and domestic, and the other half designing homeware goods. “Whether that be wallpapers with Osborne & Little or various other licenced partners I have across the homeware ranges,” he explains. The designer has also recently returned as a guest judge on Interior Design Masters, and a recent addition to the brand is his beautiful artwork on his website and online boutique, Matthew Williamson Design, where he sells some of his paintings which he describes as, “Actually putting my paintbrush out as it were”. Like most creatives, he finds it difficult to switch off when it’s time to relax. THE DETAILS “The switch off button is not an easy button for me to find.” admits Williamson. “Not good at it at all. So it’s The John Lewis + a good job I love what I do, because cliché as it might Matthew Williamson sound, I guess I’m relaxed when I’m working. Homeware Collection “I love painting. I have a studio in Spain where I is available now. suppose that’s not necessarily work but it would be to paint, you know, creativity is my happy place.” “So that’s going really well and I’m enjoying those pockets of time which are rare with a six-year-old. But when I can get time, that’s what I do to sort of tune off from work, but I am really busy. And there isn’t much downtime.”

Launched in store and online last month JYSK’s garden furniture and accessories are high quality and available at affordable, competitive prices making it easier than ever to introduce the Scandi style into your outdoor space. In January 2022 JYSK saw an incredible 375% increase in search volumes for garden items compared to the previous month of December, with customers eager to shop for garden items as the new year begins. This is driven by a desire to prepare for summer before the ‘great garden furniture sell out’ in spring. What’s more, many consumers are embracing the chill and using their gardens for outdoor soirées even in winter. Corner lounge sets and hanging chairs have been the most searched for items so far in 2022, and to satisfy this increased appetite JYSK has introduced an additional range of lounge furniture, UGILT, and another colourway in the popular Gjern hanging chair adding (Black & Nature). This summer, JYSK expects to see natural materials and wood continue to grow in popularity, overtaking previous desire for muted rattaninspired furniture. Rikke Blaeside, Design and Range Manager JYSK, comments: “Over the last few years, our outside spaces have been working harder than ever and are often used as an extension of our homes, being occupied for socialising, living, working, and entertaining. This has meant that how we style the space and the furniture we choose needs to be adaptable to suit various purposes. JYSK’s latest collection has something for all requirements and tastes, whether you’re looking to furnish a city balcony, a spacious garden, or a sun-drenched deck, with the help of JYSK, you can choose from a range of designs, materials and styles for outdoor dining and relaxing. s we recover from the excess of Christmas and emerge from winter hibernation, March is the signal that spring is on its way. The weather begins to get warmer, we can spend more time in the garden and we can enjoy more time outside without having to layer up against the stormy and chilly weather. It is also the perfect time to start planning your summer garden and elevating your outdoor space with comfortable, stylish and striking elements that will make lazy days in the summer that much more enjoyable. One of our most popular products is the TiiPii bed – a stylish, floating daybed that can be used indoors or out, and which kids and grownups alike love to curl up in. Another favourite is the hanging chair, bringing a touch of luxury to gardens to help you relax in comfort. Sculptures and lanterns add that extra something special to the garden, either as a talking point or just to raise the aesthetics. You don’t need to be a keen gardener to make a stunning display. TOP PLANT & GARDENING TRENDS FOR 2022
N
ow that we are in 2022 and beginning to think about our spring gardens, Dobbies’ Horticultural Director, Marcus Eyles, has some insights into what will be big in the year ahead. From on-trend grasses including Pampas and plants for every space, to taking a more mindful approach when growing fruit and vegetables, there’s a whole host of new trends for the garden in 2022.
108 APRIL 2022
In terms of how people will be approaching gardening in 2022, Marcus expects wellbeing to be at the forefront of minds. Gardening is often associated with having a positive impact on our mental health, as well as our physical wellbeing, which fit with the trends of looking after yourself and self-acceptance. The benefits of gardening are endless, and it’s expected that more people will take to their outdoor spaces to look after themselves in 2022. Sustainability and innovation are also expected to be huge trends for 2022, with more people than ever now aware of their carbon footprint, how we can reduce waste and creating safe spaces for pollinators and wildlife in our gardens. Dobbies now only sells 100% peat-free bagged compost, with other sustainable products such as recycled and recyclable propagation kits also available for customers. When it comes to planting, it is not just for those with a large garden. City and town dwellers will be making the most of their space and more people will be interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables. There have been significant innovations in how vegetables can be grown in small spaces and because of a flourishing interest in grow your own, Marcus expects to see more unusual produce being grown. Dobbies are focusing on varieties such as Spaghetti Squash and easy salad leaves outside, plus tomatoes and chilies for the windowsill, to inspire customers. This trend highlights a nostalgic nod as well as a sustainable ethos. Blurring the lines between indoor and out will be strong in 2022, not just in terms of our furniture, but the plants we use to enhance our space. Having plants in pots that can be brought indoors in the winter will be a key trend, with houseplants outside in the warmer months and enhancing our homes in the winter. Tying in with Dobbies’ Spring Summer 2022 themes, Marcus outlines how you can incorporate some of the year’s top planting trends into your garden this year.
Slow Living
A soulful theme that inspires us to slow down and appreciate the world around us. Muted tones and colours that change with the light, mirror the way nature around us ebbs and flows. On-trend grasses including pampas fit in with this style, in borders, raised beds as well as in pots. Great for those that only have a small space and there are now lots of different sizes of Pampas Grass available. Dried flowers also suit this theme, as Marcus predicts increased APRIL 2022 109

demand for these. Top outdoor plants include Cordyline ‘Torbay Dazzler’; Stipa tenussima; Festuca ‘Azurit’; and for indoor Ficus lyrata, Howea forsteriana, Sansevieria zeylanica.
Natural Zen
An organic yet sophisticated blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design, East meets West in this contemporary, minimalistic style. A modern look that celebrates the simplicity of clean lines and beautiful shapes. Neutral tones are punctuated with sleek black and rose pink for a feminine touch. Striking ferns for both indoors and outside fit well with this vibe, with Dobbies noting an increase in the sale of indoor and outdoor ferns in 2021, predicted to continue in 2022. Also fitting with this theme are Acers, Orchids, Bananas as well as Buxus topiary and Bonsai trees. Top outdoor plants include Acer palmatum ‘Katsura’; Hardy Ferns; Ilex crenata Bonsai; for indoor Cymbidium Orchid, Fatsia japonica, Musa ‘Dwarf Cavendish’.
Global Fusion
A refined, blended look, inspired by the senses brought to life by travel. Chalky terracotta tones are married with pops of jaded teal for a worldly collection that evokes memories of past adventures and will bring a sense of zen and calm to your outdoor space. This look offers a jungle vibe, with big foliage, citrus plants, as well as plants that should be brought inside during colder months, allowing people to blur the lines between indoor and out. Top outdoor plants include Yucca Colour Guard; Chamerops humilis; Dicksonia antarctica; and for indoor Citrus; Musa Cavendish and Cacti.
Contemporary Country
Urban dwellings inspired by a country cottage feel. Shades of green, inspired by rolling hills, are complemented by highlights of dusty pink to give this theme a more contemporary look and feel. Grow your own fits with this look, with a nostalgic nod as well as innovation. Edible flowers and vertical veggies are ideal 110 APRIL 2022

Let’s Celebrate

Bright pops of colour will inject personality and fun into your outdoor space, with form, functionality and value at the forefront of this theme alongside eyecatching aesthetics. A celebration of happiness, regardless of space, with outdoor living furniture and accessories specifically designed to work well in compact areas as well as larger lawns. The Freya set was a big hit in 2021 and has been enhanced for 2022 with a new pale pink option as well as a balcony and 4 seat set, while the Juno collection is also back offering a folding set with a parasol. A refined, blended look, inspired by the senses brought to life by travel. Chalky terracotta tones are married with pops of jaded teal for a worldly collection that evokes memories of past adventures and will bring a sense of zen and calm to your outdoor space. Handmade pottery, spices and sun-weathered architecture serve as inspiration for this theme. The new Lisboa line features a premium teak table with delicate black resin chairs. Alps remains one of Dobbies’ top selling ranges, but for 2022 there are new configurations, such as a 6-seat bar set, and a new colour way in ‘pebble’. Our entry level Rio range is being extended with a stylish foldable sun longer and a 4-seat set.
