A TAX MISTAKE? YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!
Graham Doubtfire, Tax Partner at Scrutton Bland highlights a little-known error in the standard tax calculation process
T
he sun is out, Wimbledon is here again and this month we’re talking about…taxes! Even though we are prepared to admit that taxes are not the most exciting subject to read about, sadly most of us have to pay them. So any opportunity that can reduce your tax bill has to be a good thing – right? Well, we’re not guaranteeing that we can make your tax bill go away, however there is some evidence that a number of people submitting their tax return electronically through the government’s HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs) tax website may have had their tax liability calculated incorrectly. HMRC have themselves admitted that their online tax programmes have not been updated to cope with the flexibilities required to manage recent changes to tax allowances. What does this mean? Well if you are a person who falls into a group with a certain combination of savings and other income, such as a salary or pension, then you could have been paying too much tax in the financial year which ran from April 2016 to April 2017. HMRC have recognised that there may be some people whose tax calculations are wrong, but have chosen not to correct their software. As all tax software must comply with the HMRC calculator this could mean that other software has the same faults. So a number of people - HMRC says “a very small 1 0 J U LY 2 0 1 7
percentage” but this could possibly be tens of thousands - may be paying tax that is significantly more than their actual liability if claims were made making use of certain tax allowances. How has this happened? e UK tax system is very complex, and was made even more so when a number of new tax allowances came into use in April 2016. ese were in fact very generous allowances, but because HMRC’s systems only allowed them to be applied in a very inflexible order, there is a chance that some people with a specific mix of dividends and other income have been affected. Scrutton Bland have already seen this happening in a number of our clients’ tax returns for 2016/17. ankfully our tax team were able to identify this and they applied the clients’ allowances in the most tax-efficient way and saved them this problem. MAYOR'S CHARITY EVENT - PAPILLON, CHIGWELL

ewly appointed Redbridge Mayor Linda Huggett held her first Charity Appeal event at the Papillon restaurant in Chigwell on Monday12th June. She was joined by Mayors from Bromley, Haringey, Havering, Hillingdon and Waltham Forest as well as local residents supporting the appeal. e event was held in aid of the Mayor’s two chosen charities for this year, Haven House and St Francis Hospice. Haven House gives support to children and young people who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, while St Francis Hospice provides care and support to people with a life-limiting illness, as well as their carers and family members. e Redbridge Mayor’s Appeal organises a range of different fun events over the year and you can get updates on these events by e-mailing redbridgemayorsappeal@hotmail.com n

EXTREMELY POSITIVE INSPECTION AT OAKLANDS SCHOOL
F
ive inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate spent a week at Oaklands School at the start of May scrutinising all aspects of the education provided. e final reports have now been received and Headmistress Sue Belej and Group Managing Principal Matthew Hagger are delighted with the results. is was the first of the Department for Education’s new-style inspections that were introduced in September 2016 to inspect against three areas: 1. e quality of pupils’ personal development 2. e quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements 3. Focussed compliance Under this new framework schools are only given 24 hours’ notice of an inspection, which means that Oaklands was inspected through a snapshot of the school as it normally is by a team of independent and highly experienced professionals without the luxury of having been able to pre-prepare. Group Managing Principal Matthew Hagger comments, “We’re all very pleased at Oaklands to have received such positive reports, which contain numerous comments that support and acknowledge the many positive achievements we’ve made in recent years as they were judged to be ‘Excellent or ‘Good’ in all areas. With such rigorous criteria for inspections nowadays this is a far higher standard than the national trend and it’s a testament to our hard working staff and lovely children”. Although it is normally difficult to tick every box in this area, the school was pleased for the confirmation that it was fully compliant with the Education Regulations and that no further action is required. n

K Registered Charity Animal SOS Sri Lanka was founded by a local Woodford resident, Kim Cooling. Kim, a social worker, had visited Sri Lanka as a tourist 20 years before and was left heartbroken by the plight of the streets cats and dogs there. ere are around 3 million strays in Sri Lanka, many are suffering terribly and in need of urgent help and veterinary care. e charity which is run in the UK by unpaid volunteers like Kim, have a beautiful 4 acre free roaming dog sanctuary in southern Sri Lanka which includes 2 veterinary clinics and 2 resident vets. e charity is currently caring for 1100 rescued street dogs and 100 cats too. Many of the cats were rescued and hand reared as orphaned kittens. Critically sick and injured dogs
these strays battle courageously for life and a happier future. e charity also cares for over 100 disabled animals that are mainly injured on the roads and have some paralysis on their hind limbs. Hydro in the Indian ocean and physio get many walking again and others are given mobility carts so they can scoot around with

their friends and have a quality of life. e charity prepares over 385 kilos of foods a day for the sanctuary animals and starving strays in the area. e food is prepared in 2 kitchens and it's a herculean task 365 days a year. e charity also provides adoption schemes, feeding programs for hungry strays in the area and weekly outreach programs where they go out into the local villages and neuter/spay, treat and vaccinate pets belonging to poor families. Educational literature is also given out at these programs as are free collars and leads to prevent horrific neck wounds from tight rope and wire. ese programs reduce the cycle of animal suffering and rabies which still claims lives in Sri Lanka. e charity offers local employment opportunities which supports many families and also English classes for over 40 children in the

HOT IN BED? KEEPING COOL IN THE SUMMER… WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
S
ome like it hot – Some prefer cooler temperatures. Allegedly us Brits are never satisfied.
For me personally, 30°C it’s a tad too sultry. So how do you keep cool when the temperature’s scorching and all you want to do is sleep? 1. Wear very light cotton PJs. Although it’s tempting to throw off all covers and lay there as nature intended, the truth is that cotton pyjamas help the skin to breathe. Alternatively, cover yourself with a 100% cotton sheet. 2. Talking of sheets, apply a light mist of cool water. Obviously don’t soak but a gentle mist can cool down the sheets and therefore make going to bed more comfortable then slipping between sheets which feel like toast. 3. Whilst cooling your sheets, spray mist on your curtains too. Any heat absorbed by them during the day can be cooled down by a light application of cool water. 4. Ice is also wonderful. If you put a bowl of ice in front of your fan, it will cool the room as it melts. Plus if during the night you’re still struggling, put some ice into a cotton sock and then place against your forehead, feet, temples, wrists and ankles.
5. Sleeping in the hot weather is not easy. Another hot body next to you probably won’t help either. So hot in bed doesn’t necessarily mean there needs to be another person! 6. Most of us have a television in our rooms and other electrical appliances. Plugs generate a lot of heat. If possible, turn off all electrical points. Every little bit helps. 7. Keeping blinds and curtains closed is a recommendation too.
Hope you enjoy the summer months but are able to remain comfortable at night.
8. If it’s too hot upstairs (heat rises) perhaps sleep downstairs. 9. Keep plenty of water next to your bed so if you wake up thirsty – you have readily available water to help hydrate. Perhaps some cooled water in an ice box may help too. 10. A nice cool shower before going to bed... n

f a picture tells a thousand words, then for these two unassuming art students their pictures sum up their journey from their very first steps when they booked in for new part-time art classes for adults to the latest exhibition held last month. Sandra Joseph, aged 65, from Chingford is amazed at what she has produced since starting the course three years ago. She said “When I attended Capel Manor as a mature student doing garden design I was inspired by a teacher there but I didn’t understand colour or technique. “Starting the beginners course and the teaching of Adelaine and Jim have been the best lessons. e atmosphere is friendly and it’s also precious time for me” said the busy Mum of three. Sandra created her buffalo after being inspired by a trip to the Native American Heritage Museum in Kansas. Doreen Fall, aged 75 from Buckhurst Hill was quite artistic when she left school but never took it seriously. It was Doreen’s son and daughter-in-law who got her going by buying the art course as a present three years ago. Doreen painted the pink lady because she liked the look of it. She said “I love women in dresses and I am very pleased with what I have created. I think Adelaine and Jim have teased it out of me and made me believe in myself. I love coming here. e group is fun and we have a laugh. e time goes by quickly and at the end of it you have done something creative and something for the art exhibition for all to see. Yes, I like that.” n

OUR WONDERFUL CRUISE ONBOARD THE SEABOURN ENCORE By Sharon & Melvyn Goldstein, Managing Director, Atlantis Travel We were so excited to join the Seabourn Encore in Rome and she did not disappoint, a truly elegant ship oozing with class. Our stateroom was beautifully decorated surprisingly roomy with a walk in closet, and we were greeted by our stewardess with a glass of champagne..... oh yes I thought, we are going to be thoroughly spoilt!!! Lunch by the pool was excellent sea bream was the catch of the day, which I have to say was very delicious. The staff were attentive and we felt very special. We went for a look around Seabourn Square, an area where the concierge can answer all your questions or sit at the cafe and sample the coffee of your choice together with a pastry and maybe have an ice cream and catch up on the daily news. The Grill by Thomas Keller is a must and definitely the place to be seen. The cocktail bar was buzzy with an amazing atmosphere and the cocktails were genuinely the best we have ever had, an espresso martini to die for!!! The food was served by the chef carved at the table, a really lovely touch. If the wine is important the selection of premium wines was endless.

This summer, thousands will get up close and personal with some of the most recognisable names in the sport, as for the first time ever, the spectacular Royal Hospital Chelsea plays host to Longines Global Champions Tour and Global Champions League. Team GB’s 2012 Olympic heroes such as Scott Brash and Ben Maher and legendary John Whitaker will be battling to win unprecedented prize money at the iconic location on the banks of the River Thames. The event takes place from 4th-6th August 2017 and will be the 12th leg of the prestigious

Star Spotting… British fans will be see the stars of show jumping in the competition arena and training back stage in the warm up arena. London 2012 gold medallist Ben Maher will be part of the London Knights home team and will no doubt get an enthusiastic reception. His team mates include World No1 (correct at time of going to print) Kent Farrington, Under-25 rider Emily Moffitt who now rides for Great Britain, Eduardo Menezes and Enrique Gonzalez. Having a UK leg of the Championship will be very positive for our country’s show jumping, and will hopefully inspire new generations, continuing our 2012, and Nick’s 2016, Olympic legacy. I can’t wait to compete there next summer; it’s going to be a very special event.”

T
he Concours of Elegance proclaim ms itself to be “the most exclusive car park in the world”; a typically understated labeel for one of the classiest and most increedible motoring events on the global calendar. The venue this year is the breath-taking grounds of Ham mpton Court Palace; a royal setting which – with its incredible history and beauty – is the perfect pairing for the collection of rare automobiles set to ar a riivve as part of the Concours this September. The focal point is a gathering of more thaan sixty unique or extremely rare cars, many of which h will never have been seen before in the UK – let alone
all in one place. And, just like the palace itselff,, each eac car has a story to tell; the 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage on display, y, for example, example was the first car to ever receive a speeding ticket. The driver, Walter Walter Arnold, was traavvelling 8mph in a 2mph zone and his car wasn’t preceded by a man on foot carrying a red flag – a legal flag leg requirement at the time. A policeman gave a chase on his bicycle and fined Arnold for his recklessness. From 1922 is a Bentley 3 Litre, which was the first to ever race at the Le Mans 24 Hours race, kickstarting a run of wins for Bentley in 1924 and again in 1927 to 1930. Then there’s the Porsche

his month I will focus on tips on how to care for your skin in the next few months where the heat and sun can really change how our skin behaves, how to prevent break outs and sun damage are the two main issues that so many of my clients complain about in the summer.

It contains UVA and UVB filters and a powerful antioxidant which helps to repair skin.
PEEL AWAY Twice a month I suggest coming to the clinic for a salicylic/glycolic based acid peel. It clears up dulling, dead skin cells, which not only helps even out any discolouration, but also draws excess oil out of the pores and leaves skin less shiny. In addition a good daily cleanser like Inspira med prime cleanser helps to clean the skin deeply, kills bacteria and smooths the skin. For those needing extra support with blemish control Obaji Te pads are a quick and effective way of doing a mini at home peel, these powerful pads are great on holiday too and are part of my must have skin care products.
HYPERHYDROSIS - Sweating is necessary to control body temperature during times of exercise and in warm/hot surroundings, and is a normal response to a rise in temperature or anxiety. - Sweating is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system. In about 1% of the population, this system is revved-up and works at a very high level, causing sweating to occur. - It can occur in many different areas of the body, and the condition is known as Hyperhydrosis, which means 'excessive sweating'. It affects both sexes equally, and all races.
TRADE IN FOUNDATION I switch to daily moisturiser serum with gradual self-tanner vita liberata is an amazing light weight serum that doesn't clog the pores. Heliocare also do an SPF 50 colour tint in three shades which acts like a foundation so helps to give coverage, protection and a light formula which does not make your skin oily.
PREVENT PIGMENTATION My two favourite anti pigment tools in the summer is a daily topical vitamin C like Obaji Brightalive or C bright, or Auriga vitamin c serum, used in conjunction with an SPF protector means your are preventing new Pigmentation forming which means less repairing treatments in the Autumn!

Plexr is a cordless hand operated micro-surgical device that transfers concentrated heat to the treated skin tissue. It uses the difference in voltage between the device and the patients skin, generating a small electrical arc, similar to lightening. THE TRADITION
Our Philosophy at Rowhill Grange is to use only the best of local seasonal ingredients. With this in mind we produce monthly menus to enable us to utilise the best produce as it comes into season. We strongly believe in supporting the local Kent economy sourcing the majority of our produce from Kent, mixing these ingredients with imagination and flair we have created a selection of dishes which reflect seasonal Kentish dining at its best. ur client based in Chigwell required a complete refurbishment of their existing main en- suite bathroom.
ey wanted a comtempary feel to the room, storage & a good shower area were top of the list. Our client required Bathworks to supply all goods and to arrange a complete installation. ey came to our studio for a meeting looking at the various options for layout and possible goods. e room was drawn up by ourselves in a 3D format, giving our client a better idea of how the area would look. e installer also called over to the property, this gave him a better feel for the layout and

possible plumbing restrictions. Within the shower area, we created two recess areas. Our client could use these for storage of shampoos, conditioners etc. Products supplied from Bathworks included, Duravit ceramics, Ambiance Bain furniture, Zehnder radiator, Hansgrohe and 10mm frameless glass from Showerlab. Being official suppliers of these products we were able to get the products quickly and at the right price. e room was finished using tiles from Waxmans ceramics, this included a feature wall in the shower area. e final result, a fabulous new bathroom.
