MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR ONLINE SECURITY IN ORDER Tim Mulley, senior partner at Scrutton Bland has some useful advice for businesses and individuals.
T
here has been plenty of news coverage about cyber attacks against big businesses. Mobile phone providers, banks and building societies have all been recent targets of high profile online hacks. But it would be a mistake to assume that cyber criminals are only going after large organisations. Recent statistics show that small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) are just as likely to be targeted. According to recent research by Barclaycard, 48% of SMEs fell victim to at least one cyber attack last year, and 10% were targeted multiple times. If you are a business owner or senior member of staff then it is possible that threats from cyber criminals may not have been seen as a critical business risk, but the problem is that many businesses do not take the threat seriously until it is too late. e impact of a cyber attack on a business can be catastrophic. e disruption to operations and productivity is immediate, but long term damage to a business’s hard won reputation is harder to repair, and can be disastrous as the business may be viewed as an insecure option for customer payments and transactions. ere are some simple security actions that you can do to protect yourself and your colleagues from the risk of a cyber criminal attack: 1) Be vigilant. Cyber criminals will gain the trust of a person by pretending to be someone they’re not in order to gain access to important information. Look out for unusual requests from people seeming to be from colleagues or clients. 2) Tighten up your passwords. Simple passwords can be relatively easy to crack, so use non-sequential letter and number combinations. Even better, use ‘multifactor authentication’ so that another piece of evidence besides a password is used. 1 2 APRIL 2017
3) Beware of using your own devices in the office. It may be convenient, but without a comprehensive security policy it can be easy for hackers to infiltrate your network through an unprotected device. 4) If you are uploading sensitive data to a cloud storage device then make sure you use a reputable service provider – such as Scrutton Bland’s SBLive cloud accounting software – which will keep your data safe. 5) Consider updating your insurance to include ‘emerging risk’ such as cyber crime. is should include cover for: • Data loss • Intellectual property value and infringement • Directors & officers insurance including crisis management • Reputation coverage • Non-damage business interruption • IT network failure • Transit supplier insolvency • Supply chain • Political and regulatory risk • Environmental risks • Commercial crime Scrutton Bland specialise in bringing together accountants, tax advisers, insurance specialists and independent financial advisers to provide a comprehensive service of financial and tax advice. n

HRH PRINCE HARRY VISITS EPPING FOREST
T
he City of London Corporation welcomed HRH, Prince Harry, to Epping Forest on 15 March. e Prince was officially dedicating Epping Forest to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC). e QCC was launched in 2015 and was designed to create a network of forest conservation initiatives throughout the 52 nations of the Commonwealth. e aim of the project is to raise awareness of the value of forests and to save them for future generations as well as create a unique network of forest conservation projects that will enable the global sharing of best practice and collaborative initiatives. Prince Harry’s visit commenced at Barn Hoppitt in Chingford, an important habitat and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Here the Prince met with Lucky and Ragamuffin, two of Epping Forest’s longhorn cows. e cattle graze the Forest to maintain the vital wood pasture habitat. He then met with Epping Forest’s conservation team to find out about tree management work taking place to protect the Forest’s significant veteran trees. Prince Harry took time to talk with Forest Keeper Sam Hobbs, a former paratrooper who served nine years and was injured in 2012. Sam’s Forest Keeper post, as well as studies in countryside and wildlife management, is funded by Help for Heroes as part of their transition from the armed forces programme. e Prince then moved to the High Beach area where he visited school groups enjoying outdoor education activities. He also met with the ‘Happy Loppers’, a special educational 1 4 APRIL 2017
needs group who work on conservation tasks throughout the Forest. Prince Harry then planted an oak tree on Queen’s Green in High Beach before finalising the visit with a group photograph. e City of London Corporation looks forward to working with forests around the Commonwealth to share ideas on how to protect the heritage and biodiversity of unique woodlands around the world. TUNNEL: THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF CROSSRAIL Experience May half term activities from 29th May - 2nd June at Museum of London Docklands

his May half term at Museum of London Docklands, be inspired by the engineering story behind their free interactive exhibition Tunnel: e Archaeology of Crossrail. Learn about Europe’s largest infrastructure project and London’s newest railway and explore how the new Elizabeth line was built. Tunnels were dug deep beneath some of London’s busiest streets so as not to disturb important foundations, and when they reached the surface, an opportunity arose to uncover layers of the city’s history. 500 of the most exciting objects discovered during this massive engineering project are now on display at Museum of London Docklands at their free exhibition Tunnel: e Archaeology of Crossrail. ere will be free family events at the museum throughout the May half term inspired by this great feat of engineering. Whether you want to build bridges like Brunel, create a train, like the Elizabeth line trains, or discover the modern marvel of Tower Bridge, there is something to spark everyone’s imagination. 1 6 APRIL 2017

LOUGHTON METHODIST CHURCH CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

ack in the 1980s Loughton Methodist Church had a vision to build a new Church on the site of the existing one in High Road, Loughton. After a time of prayerful discussion and with decisions made, on a cold February Sunday in 1986 Rev Dr Leslie Griffiths took the last ever services at the old Church. After the morning service the congregation gathered outside the Church for a fond farewell to the building before demolition work began the next day. During demolition a time capsule was discovered behind the foundation stone, deposited in 1903. Continuing the tradition, a container with appropriate contemporary “relics” was deposited within the fabric of the new building – for posterity to uncover in the fullness of time. Despite the inevitable difficulties of being “churchless”, there were nevertheless many blessings. Not least was the way in which the LMC congregation was welcomed by the clergy and people of St Edmund’s Roman Catholic Church in Traps Hill. LMC Sunday morning services were held there for over a year. e 30th anniversary of the opening of the present Loughton Methodist Church building is being celebrated over the weekend of Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April.

We talk to the Group Managing Principal, Matthew Hagger, about the recent coffee mornings held with the current parents. Q: TELL US ABOUT THE OAK-TREE COFFEE MORNINGS. Between October and March each year there is a programme of informal Coffee Mornings for each Headmistress and me to chat with parents year group by year group at each school. ese are useful for us to discuss various aspects of our education, with no set agenda, and to listen to feedback. is is the fifth year that these Coffee Mornings have been used to inform our school development plan as we continually look to enhance the service that we provide to our families. Q: WHAT DO THE PARENTS LIKE TO DISCUSS? e sessions last for around an hour, so our parents have ample opportunity to bring up anything that they would like to discuss, no matter how small or large. We can discuss anything from the development of our extra-curricular activities programme to recent enhancements to the quality of the education. Some groups focus on particular themes, such as our intensive preparation for senior schools for parents of the older Oaklands and Coopersale Hall children, or our careers advice and Sixth Form entries at Normanhurst and Braeside. Some questions will concern the school as a whole and others the class or individual. Q: WHICH DEVELOPMENTS HAVE COME FROM COFFEE MORNING DISCUSSIONS? A few years ago a running theme in Coffee Mornings across 2 0 APRIL 2017
the Group was about communication. Parents were asking for more, and for ways to make it easier for them to access our information. As a result we developed and launched a new website for each school, four interactive Apps for Android and Apple devices, text message reminders to parents and a textback service for electronic signing. We are always updating and developing these. We’re currently working on a new look for the websites to make them even more user-friendly. We developed out Parent Portals for the sending of all reports, handbooks and documentation and have recently launched an online Parents’ Evening booking system that has proved very popular. Recently Coffee Mornings have seen parents ask for reminders about upcoming dates, so as a result we created ‘Forthcoming Events’ posters that are displayed around each site. Q: HOW DO YOU FOLLOW-UP THE COFFEE MORNINGS? I spend time after each Coffee Morning discussing ideas for development or points for consideration with each Head and relevant members of staff, before implementing new initiatives or tweaking aspects of our provision. e Coffee Mornings are very time-consuming as I now have around 30 of them each year across the four schools. However, I feel that they are incredibly important as I get to spend valuable time with hundreds of parents each year who have excellent ideas to contribute to our provision. n

as e Big Painting Challenge and other art programmes on TV inspired you to get out your brushes and easel? If you want to revisit a part of you who long ago yearned to paint, or wonder if you can get in touch with your inner creativity now a new Art Class, tailor made for you, starts on Wednesday 3rd May and runs for 14 weeks. ree years ago Seasons Art, under the auspices of Adelaine Frank, began part-time classes on Wednesdays at Lifeworks, behind Loughton Methodist Church in the High Road. ey are aimed at total beginners and those wanting to get back into art and since then a number of students have found themselves enthralled with the discovery that painting and creativity is within everyone. Many return and some have exhibited their work. All classes have the added benefit of tutor Jim Jack, a sculptor and local artist. Local Doctor Indu Sinha, now on her third course, says “is Art Class has planted a seed of knowledge about Art and inspires me. It brings out the hidden talent in me this will last my lifetime.” Student Eileen O’Sullivan said “I have learnt so much from Adelaine and Jim since starting the Art Class. ey make it fun and really interesting with all their knowledge. Adelaine is also part of Arts Commune in Chingford, a welcome retreat for artists, from absolute beginners to improvers. he special evening was hosted by the Chairman of Epping Forest District Council, Councillor Jeane Lea. e Chairman explained why the Council hold the Civic Awards in her opening speech, she said: ”We hold the Civic Awards to recognise the efforts of the remarkable people that live amongst us, who make a difference and inspire others to do the same. You make our district diverse, unique and exceptional.” ”What strikes me, as I am sure it does others, is that our communities are full of incredible people, far too many to recognise everybody.” CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2017 is year, Doreen and Sid Miller, were the joint winners of the prestigious Citizen of the Year award. e pair have been heavily involved in community action in the district for decades. Together, they have helped hundreds of families find a place to live by providing crucial rent guarantees, they also volunteer with Epping Forest Community Transport and the local furniture exchange. Elizabeth Renny was highly commended for her 35 years service to the second Loughton Girl Guides pack, before her retirement this month. YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2017 Arjun Kuhaendran, a student at West Hatch High School won the very special accolade of Young Citizen of the Year for his dedication to his role of charity ambassador. He has seen money raised for Crisis at Christmas, Macmillan, Water Aid and the International Day of Peace in this past year alone. Runner-up, David Castleman, received a Special Commendation for his extraordinary bravery. COMMUNITY SERVICE MEDALS Community service medals were received by Garry Clark and Richard Holt of the East of England Ambulance Service, Sub Officer Dave Horton of the Essex Fire Service and Sergeant Simon Dear of Essex Police. Youth Council Awards Epping Forest District Council Youth Council award winners Marley Chick, Lisa Nakimuli, Finlay Jordan and Ashwin Gohil were all commended for their outstanding achievements and dedication to their roles. SPORTS AND CREATIVITY AWARDS Daniel Rowden, an 800m runner from Buckhurst Hill, was the winner of this year’s sports bursary of £1,000. Bethany Joiner won the Creativity award for her photographic talent and charitable work, she received a bursary of £500. BUSINESS APPRENTICES Praise was given to Epping Forest District Council’s Business Apprentices; Jay Binks, Emily Gowens, Becky Linford, Sian Pavitt, Becca Yellop and Amber Stewart, who have all achieved their level 2 diplomas and are all now employed by different departments across the council. Over £10,000 raised for Essex Air Ambulance A magnificent £1,160 was raised at the Civic Awards for the Chairman’s charity, the Essex Air Ambulance Service and local artist Martyn Royce donated an original work of art to the charity for auction. THE BEST AND WORST OF RECENT TV DRAMAS WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
W
e all have a coping mechanism to help us balance the responsibilities of work with leisure. Gyms are certainly very popular for stress and physical relief. A good, strong workout, burning off the day’s tension plus a detoxification process in the sauna… is all sounds great however I’m a rather more sedentary creature with a preference for a good (preferably great) film, TV drama or documentary. Maybe it’s my age? Maybe it’s my physical status? But getting a strong cup of tea is as strong as it gets. Preferably with a biscuit, slice of cake or some other form of nourishment to enhance the viewing experience. Sadly, I don’t have much spare time so am discerning about my viewing experience, however one of the most exciting series within the last few months was Appletree Yard with Emily Watson (Yvonne Carmichael) and Ben Chaplin (Mark Costley) as her lover. e mini-series was based on the psychological thriller written by Louise Doughty. I remembered Emily Watson from Angela’s Ashes and thought she was excellent, so was prepared to invest a preliminary thirty minutes with the view to more if I was intrigued… I was hooked after the first five. Having read all the reviews, I noticed quite a few criticisms about Ben Chaplin but I actually thought he was terrific, so coupled with Emily Watson, we had a dynamic and tempestuous duo. In short, Yvonne is married to Gary (Mark Bonnar) and their relationship is a tad past its sell by date but they’re hanging in and trying to appear the contented, suburban couple, despite the flaws and Gary’s past indiscretion. But Yvonne has a secret, a sensual and passionate encounter with a rather rugged and handsome stranger, Mark Costley.

e encounter was so memorable that despite trying to keep her feelings secured within her emotional boundaries, she can’t help but reflect and is keen to repeat! I must admit, a chapel in the crypt wouldn’t be my idea of an ideal location, especially in an area so tight, it necessitated a foot in a steel bucket for extra leverage, but each to their own. Visually and from an auditory perspective too with all the required, grunts, groans and moans, it worked for TV purposes and made the necessary impact as a pivotal point. She tries to keep her affair secret in order to balance both lover and husband in a way that suits her and doesn’t compromise each of the different arrangements but not wanting to spoil the twists, turns and unexpected ending of the three-part drama and the court room suspense, it was great and I didn’t guess the ending. Absolutely recommend. When it comes to the worse… the ultimate drama tease that promised so much but delivered so little was e Replacement. First episode was great. Second episode was showing signs of weakness. ird episode and suspicions were confirmed… More ridiculous than riveting and begs the question: How could something that promised to be so good turn out to be so bad? n

REDBRIDGE’S GOT TALENT
T
he Redbridge Mayor and his Appeal Committee held their first ‘Redbridge’s got Talent’ show on Friday 24 March at Sir James Hawkey Hall.
e event was heavily oversubscribed but the Appeal Committee eventually narrowed it down to fifteen, very different acts from local schools and groups. e acts included dances ranging from Bollywood, African street dance, Irish dancing, tap dancing, right through to cheerleaders performing a Competition Routine. ere were also singers and a recital, with the youngest performers being only 4 years old. One of the most novel acts was a duet performing ‘Rubiks Cube’ drumming! e judges found it almost impossible to choose a winner from the hugely talented acts. ey eventually chose performers ‘Bharatanatyam Fusion’ from the Tamil Society who were performing’ ‘Krishna Ne Begane,’ a South Indian classical dance which used to be performed in temples in ancient times. e event was sponsored by local businesses Burton Power, Coolherbals, Imperial Glazing (Ilford), Mont Rose College and Treehouse Nursery (Wanstead). All proceeds will be donated to the Mayor’s Charities which are Vibrance, Healthy Living Projects and Disabled Asian Women’s Network (DAWN). n

Lord's has long been seen as the game's spiritual 'headquarters'. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket.

osacea is an inflammatory skin disorder, often referred to as 'the curse of the Celts' as it predominantly affects Celtic skin types. It generally affects the cheek area chin and nose. Permanent damage to the face (scarring) almost never occurs in rosacea, so it can be managed and repaired with specialist help. Factors for rosacea triggers are sun exposure, hot humid weather, emotional stress, wind, heavy exercise, alcohol, hot baths, cold weather, spicy foods, certain skin care products that contribute to excessive oil. As you can see extremes of anything can affect the person. It is not realistic to expect avoidance of some or all of these activities so it is crucial when I am assessing patients that I personalise a treatment plan for them in terms of in clinic treatments, home care maintenance and extra support and guidance especially when going on holidays. The diagnosis for those suffering with this painful and embarrassing issue is that it is a disease of the sebaceous glands, patients often have a trigger in the early thirties due to a surge in sebum production and growth in the sebaceous glands. Typically, sebaceous glands produce excessive amounts of very destructive oil and an altered chemical composition that leads to inflamed sore skin, pustules, bulbous areas such as rhinophyma (ballooning of the nose), inflammation in the cutaneous tissue due to a surplus of oil weakens the skin barrier function. It is essential that proper creams are given specifically to help mange the condition, I particularly get good results for my clients with Obaji Rozatrol for daily use, it helps to relieve the visible symptoms and it normalises skin by reducing excess oil, which ultimately leads to inflammation, in extreme conditions I will prescribe topical creams. It is very important to advise clients to protect their skin daily with a good SPF protector as it is widely documented that this is the premier trigger of rosacea in 81% of patients, however 88% of rosacea sufferers when applying sunscreen daily report a decrease in flare ups. Sadly for rosacea sufferers this is a chronic life long disorder that requires management, support and empathy. n

eople often go to enormous lengths choosing a sofa, because it's the most important piece of furniture in a living room. It can literally make or break the look of a setting. A lot of life happens on a sofa, so it's worth taking time to find 'the one'.
Follow the experts' tips for a seatmatch made in heaven... GET THE MEASURE I'm a fan of sofas which are big enough to lounge around on and are super comfy, with deeper seat cushions than average, so they're inviting to curl up on. Top tips: Measure your room before shopping, so you choose a sofa to fit the space and scale of the room. When you have one in mind, make a paper template of it and lay it out in the room to help you visualise the reality of its size, as display sofas always look smaller in large showrooms.
Ensure it will fit, especially if there are awkward stairs or narrow doorways, although bolt-on arms or removable legs are solutions if space is tight. It could be argued that we're all artists, snapping away with our mobiles and generally enjoying a more visual world, but all too often our 'work' ends up unseen.

hotographs of family, friends and holidays are commonly left lingering on laptops and phones, instead of being out on display. What could be easier than dressing your walls with personal photos and artwork for an instant injection of personality? Traditionally, the walls of ancestral homes were hung with elaborate paintings of family members, and now, the modern, affordable equivalent is photographic family portraits. There are lots of ways to display photographic wall art. Individual shots can be blown up into high-impact images and displayed as a focal point. Another successful approach is for each family member to be shot separately rather than as a group - which captures the perso nality of the various individuals, then each can be framed and the prints grouped together on a wall. Create a gallery in a hallway or corridor - use matching frames in the same size and hang them in rows to draw your eye along the space. The great thing about adding art to your home is that it can be done on practically any budget. Whether it's investing in a painted piece of furniture or framing
old postcards or vintage prints, creating a cool, cohesive look is simple, effective and a great way to bring a home to life. Wall murals, once so naff, have won back their style credentials. There is a huge range online of foreign landscapes, feature shots and famous views from the Pyramids to the Eiffel Tower. Alternatively, opt for a gentle, bucolic effect with a watercolour landscape. Kicking convention out the window and displaying images you really love will result in walls that speak volumes about your taste and way of life. A vibrant or quirky piece of artwork adds a splash of personality in an instant. If hanging prints isn't quite your thing, consider utilising shelving space and carefully display framed artwork on it, or simply put prints on the floor and lean against a wall. For an inexpensive, imaginative touch, use your children's artwork - the more abstract and playful the pictures, the more striking the display will be. Don't be afraid to put a larger picture next to a smaller one, but perhaps balance it by having two or three small pictures taking up the same space as the larger one. A series of different sized pieces can look striking when carefully spaced and hung at the same mid-point, but allow each one enough room to breathe. Don't be tempted to hang paintings or prints too close together." Art now comes in all shapes, styles and sizes, giving the opportunity to use your creative flair and illustrate your interests and personality in your own home.
