Marilyn Moore Creates a Beautiful Buzz in Chelsea Nothing should surprise us about Chelsea, an area always keen to embrace innovation. Sloane Stanley, a family run Estate that first purchased land in Chelsea nearly three centuries ago, is always at the cutting edge of this forward-thinking ethos. In a recent retailer’s competition, Sloane Stanley offered the chance for a local business to receive an exciting makeover from leading Visual Merchandiser, Allison Haslock. This talented artist has previously staged windows for Harrods, Selfridges, Lulu Guinness, The White Company, Space NK, Links of London and Charles Tyrwhitt. Marilyn Moore, a designer who sources the finest silk and cashmere from Scotland and Italy, was the lucky recipient. Allison aimed to complement the quintessentially pretty Englishness of Moore’s clothes, which are not only statement pieces, but also real investments. For a theme, what better iconic sign that the British Summer has arrived, than bees? Using them as the central motif in Marilyn Moore’s revamped window, Allison has pollinated an Alice in Wonderland style sense of curiosity in passers by. What better way to remind people of genteel English summers, bees as fat as cotton balls, jugs of fruit-laced Pimms and colour, always colour. Thinking about the gentle softness of a summer bee conjures the luxurious feel of cashmere under the fingers – that tactile beauty that makes this season’s Moore brand so wearable.
sloanestanley.CoM
Putting the ‘Bee’ into Beautiful Allison’s bold images feature translucent orange and yellow hexagonal shapes dangling from honeycomb frames, as if floating in mid-air. The ultimate way to encapsulate Moore, a designer known for floral elements with crisp, bold patterning and classic styling. Geometric shapes were arranged around summer-dressed mannequins, while the base of the windows was colour blocked in sizzling orange vinyl. The finishing touch is Victor Hugo’s ‘Life is the flower for which love is the honey’ written on the glass. In short: dress well, feel beautiful and live. It is particularly charming to see the theme continued inside Marilyn Moore with the sweet scent of wild flower posies. Honeycomb shapes have also been playfully positioned around the clothes. Customers are being treated to that joyful sense of all summer has to offer but also being reminded what make SW3 so unique. Sloane Stanley were pleased to play a part in initiating such an innovative and playful work of art.

The biggest ever celebration of global classical music
B
BC Proms have announced the wide-ranging programme of events planned for its 120th season. The festival promises many of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. Global classical music is at the heart of the 2014 Proms with more international orchestras performing than ever before. 10 international ensembles appear for the first time including orchestras from China, Greece, Iceland, Lapland, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey. Some of the world’s most renowned orchestras return including the Berlin Philharmoniker, Cleveland Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. With Promming tickets remaining at £5 for the 9th year running, the finest music from around the globe is made accessible for the widest audience. A century after the outbreak of the First World War the Proms reflects on the music, musicians and musical legacy of the Great War. Works by composers who lost their lives in the trenches, sit alongside the music of composers writing years after the conflict, including Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, and Sally Beamish’s violin concerto inspired by Erich Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front. On 4 August, marking the day Britain entered the war, there will be a special Late Night Prom featuring the second of two world premieres by the late John Tavener. Collaborating with the National Theatre, the War Horse Prom features lifesize puppets from the internationally acclaimed production, alongside music performed by the Proms Military Wives Choir directed by Gareth Malone.
The Proms continues to offer a wide range of music with exciting debut performances by Paloma Faith and Rufus Wainwright. The Pet Shop Boys 12 JUNE2014

The first BBC Sport Prom, hosted by Gabby Logan, brings together the world of music and sport, and the Proms teams up with the BBC’s pre-school channel, CBeebies, for two special concerts. In 2014 there will be more Proms content available to listen to online than ever before across PC, mobile and tablet. With exciting new digital additions, including a dedicated Proms button on the BBC iPlayer Radio app, six interactive BBC iWonder guides, and the use of BBC Playlister, audiences can enjoy the Proms whenever and wherever they like. BBC television welcomes new presenters, including soprano Danielle de Niese, organist Wayne Marshall and BBC News presenter Razia Iqbal. Every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and the audio streamed online in HD quality, with additional broadcasts on Radio 1, Radio 2 and for the first time on both Radio 4, with a commission for its PM programme, and Radio 5 live in its 20th anniversary year. Sir Andrew Davis will conduct the First Night of the Proms with a performance of Elgar’s The Kingdom, and Sakari Oramo conducts the Last Night of the Proms for the first time. Rufus Wainwright, who gives his own Late Night Prom a few days earlier, performs at Proms in the Park, Hyde Park alongside Earth, Wind & Fire. Rare Aston Martin Ulster Set to break world record at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale
As one of only 21 production Ulster’s ever built, the works racer, estimated at £1,400,000 - £1,600,000, is expected to beat the existing world record of £1,300,000 set by Bonhams last December for a pre-war Aston Martin at auction.
H
aving competed in over one hundred races throughout its past nine decades, the Ulster is arguably the most extensively raced Aston Martin in the world. This extraordinary motor car has raced every year since 1935 (excluding a rest period throughout the Second World War). Built for endurance and pace, the two-seater Ulster features a fourcylinder 1496cc engine, guaranteed to reach speeds of up to 100mph.
This Ulster’s racing debut came at the 1935 Mille Miglia. It continued to build its racing legacy in other international blue riband races throughout the 1930s, finishing eighth at the 1935 Le Mans 24-Hour race, and going on to complete the Targa Abruzzo 24-hour sports car event near Pescara, Italy, crossing the finishing line in third place overall, and first in class. Many famous and historic drivers have competed in Ulster CMC 614. From iconic British racing driver Eddie Hall, to Count ‘Johnny’ Lurani - founder of the Italian Scuderia Ambrosiana Grand Prix racing team - to Tommy Clarke and Maurice Falkner who took it to eighth at Le Mans in 1935.
1 6 june 2 0 1 4
The Ulster continued to shine in competition over the ensuing 90 years and has been active as recently as April 2014 at the VSCC’s (Vintage Sports Car Club) Spring Start meeting. As a period entrant in both the Mille Miglia and Le Mans races, CMC 614 is not only eligible but positively welcomed to the great historic motor sport events world-wide, to include the Mille Retrospective; Le Mans Classic; Goodwood Revival; Monterey Historic; California Mille and Colorado Grand. James Knight, Bonhams Group Head of Motoring, said “CMC 614 certainly has the potential to exceed the existing Ulster record we established a few months ago. This car has the added benefit of being a Works entry that competed at the very highest international level. It will attract international interest and we are looking forward to an exciting sale.” The Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0PX www.goodwood.co.uk For a full listing of upcoming sales, plus details of Bonhams specialist departments go to www.bonhams.com

The Real Bond Car...
To be at auctioned Palace Blenheim on 12th July 2014
unveiled at Ian Fleming’s former office
The “real Bond car”, an Aston Martin DB 2/4 at the Old Admiralty Building
T
he car, which will be auctioned at Coys’ traditional Blenheim Palace sale on 12th July, is believed to have been the inspiration for the Aston Martin featured in the original novel Goldfinger. This model is a Vantage specification 1954 DB 2/4 Mk I, bearing the registration JBW 974. For many years it sat idle, collecting dust and rust, until a father and son purchased it for restoration. It was during the restoration that a set of unique special modifications came to light, along with the car’s connections to the British Intelligence Service and the creator of Bond himself, Ian Fleming.
A 1954 Aston Martin DB 2/4, which is understood to have been the inspiration for James Bond’s Aston Martin, was unveiled by international auctioneers Coys at the Old Admiralty Building, where Ian Fleming had his office.
than Donald Healy, the famous sports car manufacturer. As the evidence shows, the new Aston owner Ingram also competed in lots of international rallies. And had his new Aston equipped with ‘extras’ for competitions.
These one-off features appear to be the same as the fictional Bond car in Goldfinger, including reinforced steel bumpers, concealed lockers, heavy-duty anti-interference ignition system, driver’s seat connections for two-way radio and/or a homing device, and a Halda Speed Pilot device, which accurately computes time and distance in relation to a pre-selected average speed.
Chris Routledge, Managing Partner of the auction house, said: “The story around this car and its discovery is phenomenal. It was supplied new on 4th July 1955 to the Honourable Sqdr. Ldr. Phillip Ingram Cunliffe-Lister DSO, whose father was Lord Swinton, a close confidant of Winston Churchill and head of MI5 and the Security Executive during WWII. Moreover, the vehicle was regularly at Ian Fleming’s direct next-door neighbour in Kent, and indeed it was the next-door neighbour’s house which was also used as inspiration in the Bond novels, this time as Sir Hugo Drax’s residence in the novel Moonraker” He added: “This could be one of the most important discoveries of all time, confirming the link between the undoubtedly most famous spy in history and possibly the world’s most iconic sports car marque.”
Ian Fleming was very keen on sports cars even to the extent that he was once the co-driver for Britain’s top rally driver, who was at the time none other

Summer in the Square Three week summer festival in Grosvenor Square
O
From 3rd - 20th July, Grosvenor Square, at the heart of Grosvenor’s Mayfair estate, is to be transformed into an open-air cultural festival.
pen daily from 11am - 8pm, Grosvenor Square will be free for all members of the public. During this time, the square will host an array of musical and theatrical performances, foodie pop-ups and activities for children and adults alike. This will be the third season of Summer in the Square, which over the last two years has proven to be a hugely popular event for both the Mayfair and wider London community. Last year, over 18 days of glorious summer sunshine, it drew in nearly 3,000 people per day. Divided into four different zones, there will be a specific area for the performance stage, one for oversized games such as Connect4 and Chess, a food hub and a quiet area, providing the chance for a moments respite in the bustling city. The stage will set the scene for a carefully curated programme of theatre, ballet, and music from jazz, classical and folk groups, to take place at lunch time and in the evenings. Stand-up comedy acts and story-telling sessions will add to the festival’s colourful entertainment programme. All of these performances can be enjoyed from the comfort of the deckchairs that fill this quarter of the square. New to this year’s line-up will be a succession of themed Saturdays including Shakespeare Day, during which The Principal Theatre Company will present an open-air production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Ukelele Day will include lunchtime and evening performances by the Uke Junkies, who will also be offering Ukelele tuition throughout the afternoon in The Nook, a space which will host a variety of cultural experiences throughout Summer in the Square. Of course no festival is complete without an array of delicious food and Summer in the Square will be no exception. Some of Mayfair’s finest gastronomy options will come together to present ‘foodie pop-ups’, one of which will be North Audley Canteen selling an array of ice cream. The Luggage Room, an ultra-glamorous cocktail bar, will be another pop-up, serving delicious cocktails and tipples into the early evening. Grosvenor

Square is the perfect spot to pull out a picnic rug, or settle amongst the deckchairs in the summer sun, making this one festival not to be missed. For the first time, Summer in the Square will coincide with the Grosvenor Film Festival, presented by The Nomad Cinema. Launched this year, the programme for the open-air silent cinema screenings includes: 10th July - Goldfinger 11th July - Four Weddings & A Funeral 17th July - When Harry Met Sally 18th July –Top Gun During the course of Summer in the Square and for the duration of the film festival London-based gastro-pub group, Cubitt House (www.cubitthouse. co.uk) will be offering gourmet classics, alongside popcorn and a selection of drinks, all to be served from a Vintage Citroen H Van. Tickets for the screenings will be available for advance purchase through the Grosvenor London website (www.grosvenorlondon.com) starting at a price of £15 per person, with an optional £8 to include either a chicken or beef burger or fish & chips from the Cubitt House. With each “food” prepaid ticket sold, £1 will be donated to the The Nomad Cinema’s chosen charity, The Sustainability Institute (www.sustainabilityinstitute.net). Summer in the Square, by Grosvenor (landlord for 300 acres of Mayfair and Belgravia) is reflective of the company’s on-going commitment to providing for the community. The essence of Summer in the Square and the Mayfair community is to be captured by an ‘Artist in Residence’, who will create a piece of art throughout the course of the event, to be auctioned for charity on the closing night, which last year went to the charity, Street Wise Opera. Craig McWilliam, Executive Director, Grosvenor’s London estate comments: “When Summer in the Square was launched in 2012 we were thrilled that it gained full support from the local Mayfair community and I’m delighted that the initiative has continued to grow. This year, the programme is more varied than ever with themed Saturdays and more theatrical performances. Once again, it is set to be London’s finest community event, returning the concept of the village fair to its historical home.”
AWARD-WINNING ‘LUGGAGE ROOM’ POPS-UP AT SUMMER IN THE SQUARE. The Luggage Room opened its doors in December 2012 and won Mayfair Magazine Awards’ ‘Best Bar 2013.’ The nostalgic atmosphere takes inspiration from the infamous Bentley Boys and London during the Roaring Twenties. The extensive menu features drinks that were popular during this time - an era that gave rise to the modern cocktail as we know it. rd

Between Thursday 3 and Sunday 20 July, Grosvenor’s ‘Summer in the Square’ event will play host to the Luggage Room’s pop-up bar, supported by sponsors Appleton V/X, Perrier-Jouët and Pernod Ricard UK, Pierre Ferrand Cognac and Berry Bros. & Rudd. History of Wimbledon Championships The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final. By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since. In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883.
During the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer. Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years, under the Long Term Plan which ended in 2011, the momentum increased and major works programmes provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media. Further improvements are envisaged under the Wimbledon Master Plan, unveiled in 2013, which will include a retractable roof on No.1 Court.
necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other.

LONDON 60’s WEEK 2014 London’s only annual celebration of the 1960’s swings, grooves and twists its way around the capital once again, with likeminded people creating and joining together to celebrate the impact London in the 60’s had across the World.
N
ostalgia is a very powerful motivator almost an aphrodisiac. London 60s Week gives those that made the 60’s happen, and those that were not even born in the 60’s, an opportunity to experience the utopian vision. Fuelling our imaginations with the creative spirit from the sounds, images and style that has been gifted to us. Fifty years ago - 1964 saw some World changing moments. On 1st January the longest running music TV show “Top of the Pops” was broadcast on BBC1, featuring the “Rolling Stones” and presented by Jimmy Savile - a tricky subject but this programme changed how generations interacted with music. Also “The Dave Clark Five” ousted “The Beatles” from the top of the UK charts with their own composition “Glad All Over” sending the media into frenzy about the new “Tottenham Sound;”
The Rolling Stones and John Lee Hooker performed at the ‘All Night Rave,’ the forerunner of the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream’ at Alexandra Palace, and yes, it was called a Rave in 1964. Today we have unlimited access to just about everything and we can produce anything and upload it for everyone to see or hear, but until 1964 the BBC had controlled all UK radio broadcasting since 1925. They had a strict ration of how much recorded music could be played. An Irish man called Ronan O’Rahilly found a loop hole in UK broadcasting law, if he transmitted outside of UK controlled waters there was nothing the government could do. O’Rahilly acquired a boat, adapted the mask into a broadcasting antenna and Radio Caroline was born.
The Rolling Stones start recording their first album ‘The Rolling Stones’ at Regent Sound Studios, “Manfred Mann’ - provide their “5-4-3-2-1” theme tune for the pop music TV series ‘Ready Steady Go!.’ The new Marquee re-opened at its legendary location 90 Wardour Street with a line-up truly reflecting 1964 - Sonny Boy Williamson, The Yardbirds, Long John Baldry, and the Hoochie Coochie Men. In November ‘The Who’ started a seven-week residency at the new location.
The early programmes from Radio Caroline now sound bland, awkward and amateurish but to the population of 1964 all day pop music radio was a revelation. No speeches, gardening tips or cookery suggestions, ‘Woman’s Hour’ or ‘Listen With Mother’. By the autumn of 1964 Caroline had more listeners than the three BBC networks combined. If ever there was a moment in the 60’s which encapsulates why London became the most happening place in the World this has to be it. Freedom forged by the young against all the odds, no violence just music and the will to make it happen.
Aged just 15 Lulu had her first UK hit with a cover of the ‘Isley Brothers’ ‘Shout’ which peaked at number 7 in the UK charts. The Animals moved from Newcastle to London to record their cover of “The House of the Rising Sun” which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
Once again in 2014, London 60’s Week supporters have got out there and made it happen. Just as the first Radio Caroline staff did.
Biba boutique opened in Abingdon Road. This was not a shop, but an experience, a vibe. White lipped, pin legged shop girls were instructed never to approach the customers. Imagine that happening in a Kensington store today? The phrase “Can I help you?” was banned. 3 2 june 2 0 1 4

T
he popularity of London’s South Bank continues unabated with the construction of numerous high-rise apartment buildings, but within this flurry of activity it is incredibly rare to find a development of newly built houses. Therefore, the release of the first phase of townhouses at Warriner Place in Battersea has caused quite a stir amongst purchasers. While townhouses are often long and narrow, these are particularly wide offering exceptionally well-proportioned and generously-sized rooms.
The townhouses benefit from two further living areas; a large drawing room on the ground floor – with floor-to-ceiling windows spanning the entire width of the room that open out onto a pretty courtyard garden, while another sitting room is situated on the first floor.
One of the most appealing aspects of these five-storey, five-bedroom, Victorian-style townhouses – a landmark development by Shanly Homes – is the expansive lower-ground floor space, set around an inner courtyard; perfect for enjoying a coffee in the morning sun.
Internally, the specification is excellent. The walnut finished internal doors – framed by elegant architraves – complement the sleek wooden flooring. There’s Grafik Eye Scene lighting in the living areas and master bedrooms as well as a multimedia output plate to all principal rooms. Underfloor heating runs throughout the house, and the floors are concrete to minimise sound transference.
This exceptionally large open plan kitchen/dining area has room for a breakfast bar, dining table and large corner sofa and is fitted with a contemporary kitchen by Wooden Heart of Weybridge, with attractive under-lighting and top of the range Miele appliances, including a wine chiller. It is an ideal space for entertaining family and friends; informal, functional yet chic. The lower-ground floor space also comprises a utility room, plus two further rooms that could be used as a private gym, a playroom or wine cellar, as well as ample storage space perfect for golf clubs or other bulky items.
Three out of the five double bedrooms have their own en-suite bath or shower room – all of which are fitted to a very high standard with Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware and Hansgrohe chrome fittings.
Residents at Warriner Place will have all London’s many amenities and attractions right on their doorstep, with the shopping meccas of Sloane Square and Knightsbridge a short taxi ride away. For quieter moments, Battersea Park is just round the corner. Commuters are well serviced with trains to London Victoria and London Waterloo under five minutes away from Battersea Park and Queenstown Road stations respectively. Prices at Warriner Place start at £3.2 million.
Furthermore – for ultimate convenience and privacy – the kitchen leads directly to the underground car park, so there’s no need to carry heavy items, such as the shopping, up and down the stairs. Each house is allocated space for two vehicles, and the security of underground parking will help give residents total peace of mind, especially if they own a classic car. 1 N E 22001144 4 4J Ujune

f you’re a regular traveller, working a long day or a busy mum, remembering to water your window boxes isn’t always a priority. RTfact offer a range of artificial greenery and trees that are maintenance free, time saving and cost effective. Meticulously sourced, over a number of years, Dawn Smith, the founder of RTfact, only selects greenery that is so botanically correct, you wouldn’t be able to tell it isn’t the real thing. ‘ I always want the finished look to offer something unique for the customer, so I source pots and containers from around the world to give that point of difference for my clients. I’m always on the lookout for unusual trees and foliage to add interest as well as durability to the garden. It’s an initial investment but will provide hassle free enjoyment for years to come’
RTfact work very closely with private customers and Interior designers, collaborating from initial design stage to give the perfect artificial solution. Dawn says” I love it when a client comes up with a challenge. We recently had to create a ‘living’ wall effect in a dark courtyard space – four stories up, balanced on scaffolding!” The client was delighted: “I find working with RTfact Flowers hugely reassuring as they have expertise in creating artificial arrangements that do not look artificial. I really enjoy working with Dawn as she seems to understand what I want to create and I trust her advice. I have never been disappointed and my expectations are always exceeded” Anoushka Feiler, Bestique, Best in show, Hampton Court Flower Show.
Nothing is too much trouble. RTfact take pride in offering a bespoke service to find the perfect unique finish for their client’s home. For example, sourcing made to measure window boxes in a variety of finishes and providing complete flexibility in terms of greenery or flowers to complete the desired look. If you’re not exactly sure what it is you are looking for, take a peek at our online selection of arrangements, greenery and stems for ideas. So take a bit of stress out of your life this season and add some finishing touches that will look great all year round, come rain or shine. You won’t be able to tell they’re artificial - even Harvey, Dawn’s dog, needs a sniff to tell if the Hydrangeas are real! LONDON TO EDINBURGH ON A THEATRICAL TICKET
James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre, looks forward to the biggest cultural shopping trip of the year
T
he Edinburgh Fringe is one of the biggest cultural showcases for live performance in the world. It offers an astonishing opportunity for theatre lovers to soak up some of the best new theatre and comedy around, but it also provides people like me with the biggest window-shopping experience of the year. Last year’s programme featured 45,464 performances of 2,871 different shows, and a number of them found their way back to Greenwich, but this year we are partnering with five companies to present shows in Edinburgh too, to enter the fray and do our best to be noticed among those thousands of other productions. Our partners range from the youngest to the most seasoned of theatre makers. At one end of the scale we are working on a new play called Red Tap/Blue Tiger with The Albion Company, a brand new theatre company made up of current drama students and therefore the youngest company we are supporting by far. However, whilst they may be young the company has already received a Scottish Daily Mail Award Special Commendation and the play, a jet-black comedy, is sure to attract a lot of attention. In the middle of the range we are partnering with The Paper Birds, a company with two or three acclaimed productions under their belt who are creating a new show called Broke, based on interviews with people from around the country and tackling this nation’s apparent love affair with debt. Then at the other end of the scale we have brought together TV names Susan

Penhaligon (Bouquet of Barbed Wire) and Katy Manning (Doctor Who) to work with seasoned writer/director Patrick Wilde for Keeping Up With The Joans, a new comedy with a twist by Philip Meeks. Regardless of experience, the Edinburgh Festival is still the great leveller. Whether you have been working in this industry for years or are making your first tentative steps into a career in theatre, you have the same opportunity to fight for audiences, for reviews and to be seen by theatres and tour bookers from around the country. However, thanks to our work on these three shows, London audiences won’t have to make the trip to Edinburgh to see them. Red Tap/Blue Tiger and Broke will preview in Greenwich before heading up to the festival, and Keeping Up With The Joans will transfer after its festival run to open our autumn season. Whether audiences are looking for some tried and tested talent or for something upto-the-minute and new, our festival programme should have the answer. Broke previews at Greenwich Theatre on 25 July Red Tap/Blue Tiger previews at Greenwich Theatre on 26 July Keeping Up With The Joans transfers from Edinburgh to Greenwich from 26-30 August Call 020 8858 7755 or visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk for information and to book tickets.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014 Highlights
Chelsea Flower Show bloomed this year with celebrities from all over the world, garden designers, florists, gardeners, traders and garden lovers visiting the Show. The Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, held each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Royal Horticultural Society is one of the world’s leading horticultural organisations and the UK’s leading gardening charity.
T
he flower show sold out in record time, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming. Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint.
The Queen arrived at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show with Princess Beatrice for a first glimpse before it opened to the public. Her Majesty beamed as she was handed a traditional Thai decoration by the designers of a 100,000-flower display inspired by Thailand. Mary Berry, Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Paxman, Esther Rantzen, Ben Fogle, Sir Michael Parkinson, Rowan Atkinson, Twiggy, Rob Brydon and Piers Morgan were among those making a VIP appearance at this year’s show. As temperatures soared past 25C - hotter than Rio de Janeiro - gardeners were scrambling to protect their blooms. Many took to covering plants, particularly peonies and irises, in muslin to keep off the rays. Others tied up their flowers and watered them repeatedly to stop them opening too early. Elsewhere at the show were dresses made of flowers, a garden that was being tended by Vikings and a 1914 Potter’s Garden, representing a rural potter going to war in France. Many marked the First World War centenary.
The show gardens included a number of war-themed displays - which were opened with memorial readings by celebrities. Jeremy Paxman read a war-time poem, as did Stephen Fry who spoke at a garden which featured a model war horse. Actors Rowan Atkinson and Nigel Havers read poems by First World War poets who died during the conflict, on the No Man’s Land ABF The Soldiers’ Charity garden. The garden represents a landscape marked by the fighting in northern France, including trenches, a mine crater pond and the yew trees found in war cemeteries. Designer Charlotte Rowe said she was inspired by her own family’s involvement in the First World War, including her grandfather, a second lieutenant with the Middlesex Regiment. She said: ‘The idea behind it is that the land, No Man’s Land, was fought over again and again with the front line moving very little, and the land got completely messed up and churned up. ‘The concept is the healing of the land after severe conflict, and relating it to the human body and spirit.’ Plants used in the garden have been grown by injured soldiers at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court as part of horticultural therapy. Alan Titchmarsh was presented with a unique RHS trophy for his garden feature celebrating 50 years of RHS Britain in Bloom... june 2 0 1 4 5 1

THE 2014 AWARDS RHS Vice President and one of Britain’s best loved gardeners, Alan Titchmarsh MBE VMH DL, was presented with a special one off RHS Sunflower Award at the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments, for his garden feature that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom and Alan’s own fifty years in horticulture. As Alan designed the garden feature for the RHS it could not be judged, however the horticultural charity wanted to recognise the immense effort of the Alan and his team, which included designer Kate Gould and landscaper Mark Gregory. Sunflowers form a special part of the Bloom 50th anniversary celebrations, which is why the Society awarded Alan with the RHS Sunflower Award. It is the first time Alan has designed a garden at the world’s most famous horticultural event for almost 30 years, when he was awarded an RHS Gold Medal in 1985 for his Country Kitchen garden. This year Alan joined forces with another RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner, Kate Gould, to create ‘From the Moors to the Sea - a celebration of RHS Britain in Bloom’. On receiving his award, a limited edition Dartington Crystal vase, engraved with a sunflower, from RHS Britain in Bloom judge Jim Buttress, aka ‘Judge Dread’, Alan Titchmarsh, said: “I was told ‘we need you on your garden at half past six’ and I thought ‘what’s gone wrong?’. I had no idea that you would all be here. I’ve had a wonderful time working on this garden, especially with Mark, Kate and the Bloom volunteers. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a very special show for me, it’s always been a special show, I’ve been coming since 1969, and I want to thank all of you for your support and wonderful comments about the garden. Thank you very much indeed.” Some of the 2014 Award Winners include RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2014 Daisy Ellen Burgoyne, 22, from Flowers at Frosts in Milton Keynes has been crowned winner for 2014. The competition required florists aged 16-25 to design and create a ‘fantasy floral dress’, to be worn at a crystal themed ball, with the criteria stating that two thirds of the dress should be made from
5 2 june 2 0 1 4
fresh flowers and plant materials. With a number of stunning creations catching the judges’ eye, Daisy saw off stiff competition from some of the most talented young florists in the UK to take the crown with her intricate and creative design. Best Show Garden 2014 The Laurent-Perrier Garden Designed by Luciano Giubbilei, the garden was formed from a series of defined layers, continuing Luciano’s ongoing interest in texture, form and light. The cool, contemplative design showed the interplay of natural elements with a simple geometric layout. The intention was to stimulate the enjoyment of observation, and to invite exploration of stillness and movement through relationships between the contrasting forms and materials in the garden. The planting featured delicate forms alongside stronger, bolder leaves; the walls combined lustres and materials; the stone surfaces executed with contrasting finishes; the flow and reflection of water giving light and animation. Ursula von Rydingsvard’s timeless forms, constructed in roughly hewn layers of cedar, contributed to the exploration of composition and texture. BBC/RHS Choice Award 2014 Show Garden Hope on the Horizon. Designed by Matt Keightley. A contemplative space that represented the process which injured servicemen and women go through on the road to recovery, designed to support Help for Heroes. Granite blocks symbolising the soldiers’ physical wellbeing and planting reflecting their mental wellbeing. The journey started with a rough, unfinished and overgrown area, evolving through the garden to conclude with a perfectly structured section. An avenue of hornbeams drew attention to a sculpture resembling a horizon, a reminder to the soldiers that they all have a bright future ahead. As well as areas to relax and reflect, the garden also offered focal points along the journey. BBC/RHS Choice Award 2014 & Best Fresh Garden 2014 The Mind’s Eye. Designed by LBC Design. The garden was created for the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) in partnership with Countryside. The mind’s eye is the human ability to create images or scenes without the need for sight. This garden was designed to stimulate the mind’s eye through a series of contrasting sensory experiences. Designed as a sensory garden for blind and partially sighted people, as well as
f e at u r e
those with sight, the space challenged the fully sighted viewer by sometimes blurring or distorting the image we expect to see. The garden was divided into four zones: open woodland, damp and shady woodland, prairie border and arid border. Water acted as a unifying element to link and emphasise the architectural features. The centrepiece a beautiful glass cube water feature. Best Artisan Garden 2014 Togenkyo – A Paradise on Earth. Designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara. This garden was inspired by the fable of Togenkyo, a place of beautiful scenery that can help people to forget their troubles and strife, but that once visited cannot be revisited. This beautiful garden was designed to capture the concept of Togenkyo, bringing the idea to a global audience at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The planting scheme featured plenty of greenery, chosen to help fix an image of the garden in visitors’ minds, so that they can take the memory of the scenery away with them to recall and be comforted by when they are feeling troubled. BBC/RHS Choice Award 2014 – Artisan Garden Le Tour de Yorkshire. This garden depicted the Yorkshire rural and urban landscapes through which the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 will pass in July. The rural side of the garden featured plants that evoke the North York Moors. Boulders formed steps into this section of the design. An elliptical dish of water was the main feature of the urban part of the garden; the surface of the black water in the dish broken by a ring of bubbles. Through the rear stone wall of the garden a striking band of recycled bike wheels, sourced from recycling centres in Yorkshire, references the Grand Départ. RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2014 A hydrangea making its world debut at Chelsea took the top spot. Hydrangea macrophylla MISS SAORI (‘H20-2’) has been bred in Kyoto by young plantsman Ryoji Irie and named for his fiancé who has since become his wife. It’s a striking double-flowered, mophead cultivar with each floret having deep rose margins softening to white centres and wavy edges. The blooms are long-lasting, produced in June and on first year wood. Their appeal was further heightened by dark foliage. Plants thrive in full sun or semi-shade, suit border or container growing and can also be used as a cut flower. It was entered by Hillier Nurseries & Garden Centres, which also won its 69th
consecutive Gold medal at Chelsea in this its 150th anniversary year. RHS membership is for anyone with an interest in gardening. Support the RHS and secure a healthy future for gardening. For more information call: 0845 130 4646, or visit www.rhs.org.uk RHS Registered Charity No. 222879/SC038262

The Rivoli Bar at the Ritz London presents
The Tallulah
A cocktail to celebrate a legendary moment of Ritz history
O
n 20th May, the award-winning Rivoli Bar at The Ritz London launched an exquisite and visually striking cocktail as part of its new summer menu. Served in an extraordinary bespoke ‘glass slipper’, The Tallulah has been created by head bartender Walter Pintus, and commemorates the moment in Ritz history back in 1951 when American actress Tallulah Bankhead sipped champagne from her slipper during a press conference to celebrate her arrival in London. The Tallulah is an enticing and elegant blend of Soshu Japanese spirit, Jasmine Pearl tea, Cinzano Bianco, geranium essence and PIPER-HEIDSIECK champagne, and each beverage will be accompanied by a numbered scroll, allowing guests to take away a little piece of Ritz history for themselves.
With its luxurious, late 1920’s design, the interior of The Rivoli Bar has been likened by TATLER magazine to a ‘gorgeous little jewel box’. Murano glass chandeliers are suspended from gilded ceiling domes, whilst panelled walls in polished camphor wood veneer are decorated with delicate Lalique glass insets originally made for the Orient Express trains. The windows, each etched with an art deco emblem, overlook the Piccadilly arcade allowing full daylight during lunch service, but with the lights dimmed, cocktail hour enjoys a more romantic ambience. The cocktail bar has an onyx marble counter lit from above and below giving the glasses, bottles and silver shakers a brilliant sparkle. Mirrored panels in gold and silver leaf, designed in the style of the 1920s Parisian artist Jean Dunard, cleverly reflect the light and are further enhanced by a gold leaf Art Deco ceiling frieze while, at each end of the room, there are gold and copper silver bas relief inspired by the famous Yugoslav sculptor Mestrovic. A polished bamboo floor covered with Art Deco designed rugs completes the design. 5 4 june 2 0 1 4
The Rivoli Bar Drinks Menu features a selection of creative cocktails including many of the signature martinis and champagne cocktails for which The Ritz is renowned. A unique and eclectic selection of classic and contemporary creations are mixed and presented tableside to the guest’s personal preference, including the novel Vintage Cocktails that are created with vintage spirits from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. The Rivoli Bar also offers a champagne by the glass programme featuring a different champagne House every month and giving the guest the opportunity to try outstanding wines by the glass. In 2006 The Rivoli Bar Manager, created the ‘Ritz 100’, a blend of Champagne, Vodka, Grand Marnier and Peach Liqueur finished with 24 carat gold leaf, in honour of the hotel’s Centenary Year. The ‘Ritz 100’ remains the most requested Rivoli Bar cocktail. About The Ritz London For over a century, The Ritz has been the benchmark by which other hotels are measured. Perfectly located in a landmark position in the heart of London’s West End, the iconic hotel has long been the hotel of choice for Royalty and aristocracy, dignitaries and countless other discerning guests. Following refurbishment it is sparklingly renewed though still retains the luxurious Louis XVI style interiors, meticulous service and the exquisite bar and restaurants for which The Ritz name is synonymous. Welcome... The independent school system in the UK is one of the finest in the world, and you are fortunate to have some of the best schools in the country right on your doorstep. In today’s economic climate, making the right choice for your child’s education is of paramount importance. Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is best for their children. Our Education Life series is an invaluable resource for any parent considering private education. Many schools will be holding open days during the course of 2014. Encourage your children to come with you and get their feedback after each
visit. Take a notebook with you and write down the positive or negative things your child discovers from each school. This will be a useful tool when you are comparing notes! It also provides an insight into the way a child sees a prospective future school. We publish a dedicated Education Section to inform you each month of the latest open days taking place at the most prestigious schools available to your children. If you would like your school to appear in our stunning guides, please call Vanessa on 020 8240 0036 or email Vanessa@fishmediagroup.co.uk

It’s a wrap! S ydenham High School’s cookery suite was a hive of activity when twelve lucky girls got to cook with Jamie Oliver as part of a world record attempt.
The girls, from years 8 and 9, linked with over 3,000 fellow students around the globe in a live video cookery lesson run by the popular TV chef and food campaigner, organised by the Times Education Supplement. They also became record breakers as part of the world’s biggest simultaneous cookery lesson. The girls first watched Jamie take them through the recipe and then, supervised by cookery teacher Ms Mikkaila McKeever-Willis and Assistant Head Mr

The event was the focus of Food Revolution Day which aims to educate children about making better food choices. “This was a great opportunity for the girls to be part of a unique worldwide event and to build on the cookery skills they will need to help them live healthy lives,” said Headteacher Kathryn Pullen. “We introduced cookery as an enrichment activity in September and it has proved popular from year 7 to our sixth formers. We are looking forward to the major refurbishment of our cookery suite over the Summer and the increased opportunities this will give us to give as many of our students as possible the chance to be inspired to cook”.

s well as offering three-year full-time training, Mountview also runs weekend and summer schools for young people in acting, musical theatre and street dance. Mountview’s Artistic Director and Principal Stephen Jameson is passionate about offering a range of courses that teach theatre skills and techniques and give an insight into what life is like at a top drama school.
“Drama schools have a reputation for being rather closed and intimidating places, but at Mountview we want to make sure as many young people as possible have the chance to explore their creativity and see if a career in performance is for them” Stephen Jameson commented. “Our short courses are hands-on – full of workshops , rehearsals and performances – but most of all fun!” For nine to 16-year-olds week-long courses develop acting, singing and dancing skills through engaging workshops. Separate courses focus on street dance, musical theatre and acting and each culminates in a special performance to which friends and family are 6 4 june 2 0 1 4

Taught in small groups of 16-18 people they give a taste of drama school life and prepare participants for future auditions. The acting course covers text, character development, improvisation, movement and voice technique whilst the musical theatre course covers the ‘triple threat’ of acting, singing and dance skills. Both courses run from 28 July to 8 August and cost £725 for the two weeks. Sessions covering audition tips and practice, a theatre trip and master class complete the fortnight. The courses take place at Mountview’s studios in Wood Green in north London. For more details or to book call 020 8826 9217 or visit mountview.org.uk/shortcourses

Ambition & Excellence at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate
F
ounded in 1912, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is a day and boarding school with 1150 pupils aged from 5 years to 18 years and from over 40 different countries. Set in 220 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, the campus has some of the most impressive study, boarding and leisure facilities in the independent school sector.
Last year, QE celebrated its best ever A-Level results. Queen Ethelburga’s College was ranked the top day and boarding school in the North of England, according to the Daily Telegraph 2013 League Table for percentage A*/A A-Levels and equivalent qualifications. It scored 80% which ranked it top in the North and the fourth UK day and boarding school overall. King’s Magna Middle School takes pupils from age 10 years to 14 years. Here the transition is made from classbased teaching to specialist teaching, so that by Years 8 and 9, all subjects will be taught by specialist teachers. The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, but extends beyond this with a comprehensive programme of sports and creative activities. By Year 11 students will choose to attend the College, which offers a more traditional academic route of learning with GCSEs and A-Levels, or the Faculty, which offers GCSEs and A-Levels but also more vocational BTEC 6 8 june 2 0 1 4
subjects such as performing arts, fashion or sports science. For many students though, Queen Ethelburga’s is more than a school, it is their home too, and the boarding facilities are simply exemplary. Student bedrooms and apartments are all air-conditioned and have their own en-suite facilities and for the older students, their own kitchen area. Each room has a direct dial telephone, satellite plasma television with timed gaming port and DVD player. House parents are on hand 24 hours a day to help with prep, heat up hot chocolate or to listen to career ideas. New for September 2014 are two sporting academies – the Rugby Academy, supported by Leeds Rugby Academy and Foundation at Leeds Carnegie and the Netball Academy run by Yorkshire Jets. There will be further development of existing programmes in football, swimming, cricket, hockey and basketball. Queen Ethelburga’s motto is about ambition and excellence – “to be the best that I can with the gifts that I have” – it is a school rich in talent and opportunities and well deserves such a maxim. For the joy of learning... A point of view from Mrs Catherine Thomlinson Headmistress of St James Junior School, Kensington
W
hy do we send our children to school? At 4yrs old we want them to be happy, to grow in confidence, to learn to read and write and be able to do arithmetic. Yet more than anything we want to kindle a love of learning. By 10yrs old this ideal has often given way to the slog of the 11+ exams and the weighty expectations that ride on the results. So many children feel that they have failed at a young age. Evenings and weekends become a flurry of past papers along with trips to tutors who specialise in navigating the tricky mark schemes of entrance exams. “It is the endless sitting of exams which is soul-destroying.” Prof Tanya Byron
St James offers an alternative. Education from 4-18yrs with seamless entry into our excellent senior schools gives St James Junior School the
7 0 june 2 0 1 4
freedom to offer an academic education that nourishes body, mind and soul. The school is based on the principle of unity and offers an ambitious and creative curriculum, designed to give all pupils the opportunity to discover their own unique talents. “Academic performance is strong, with the standard of written work exceptionally high, both in content and accuracy.” Good Schools’ Guide
Rather than practising an endless round of past papers, our Yr 5&6 children enjoy an expansive curriculum both in and out of the classroom. Trips to Canterbury and Chartres cathedrals sit alongside singing Mozart and performing Shakespeare. This experience of great cultural material fires the imagination, develops the ability to express oneself and most importantly
is great fun. Building a model car, visiting the National Grid Energy Centre and cultivating a love of nature and the world are surely more life affirming than the pressure of yet another practice paper. Education should be exciting, inspiring and ambitious. School should be a happy, safe environment in which to grow and yes, make mistakes, get things wrong. As teachers our primary objectives are to inspire, to feed and to encourage a child’s wonderment of the world. This mustn’t stop as the children advance through the educational system but continue and develop as they do. All through education; ambitious to kindle a lifelong love of learning. www.stjamesjuniors.co.uk

meet Flavia
founder, Luxe-layers.com
Luxe-layers.com is the creation of Flavia Young, a passionate business woman who grew up immersed in the fashion world since the days her mother owned a chic boutique in Rio de Janeiro in the 70s. Flavia has worked in fashion for over 20 years and this is her latest venture, after having sold her extremely successful boutique in Johannesburg, moved to London, and taken a sabbatical to work on settling her family into their new lives.
Unlike independent retailers, the larger high street stores and online giants lack the ability to be selective and flexible in their stock buying and, up to now, most high end online shops have focused on designer editorial wear, rather than the uncomplicated morning ritual of getting dressed into that luxurious, hand picked style, which women actually covet. Flavia realised that there was, therefore, no current offering for the level of personalised
7 8 june 2 0 1 4
service many clients have been left craving in this fast paced internet age.
So, luxe-layers.com is an independent online boutique based in Barnes, SW London, where global customers can find an exclusively curated edit of the best in luxurious everyday wear, from great cut jackets, snug sweaters, perfect-fit designer jeans to that ever important party dress. All garments are expertly and personally selected from established and from new exciting American, Brazilian and European designers. Flavia and her team offer complimentary style advice via personalised emails and images, directly to each client, or, for those who prefer, via our regular updates on our style file and various social media channels. With this, Flavia hopes that shopping at luxelayers.com will be an online experience which does not compromise on personal service, and becomes part of the busy woman’s lifestyle.
3 quick Q&A’s Q: Flavia, what do you believe is the foundation for a successful fashion business? A: Attention to detail, quality and superb customer services are the key foundations to the success of any business. Q: What would be your top 3 most valuable pieces in a woman’s wardrobe? A: A pair of black trousers, an immaculately cut jacket and a crisp white shirt. Q: What is the best and worst part of running a fashion business. A: Best, I would have to say the trade shows, specially in Paris and Milan. The worst is never managing to fully switch off… when you own a business, you can never really take your eye off the ball...

In the shade
Sunburn can be painful. It is also a clear sign that your skin has been damaged by too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Over time this damage can build up and lead to skin cancer. Spending time in the shade One of the best ways to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays is to spend time in the shade. The sun’s UV rays are usually strongest between 11am - 3pm, so be careful about protecting your skin during these hours. Trees, umbrellas, canopies or buildings can all provide shade and help you protect your skin. Covering up in the sun Another way to protect your skin is with clothing. At least wear a T shirt, hat and sunglasses. Remember that the sun will reflect from the surface of water. So you can still burn if you are in or near water. Wear a hat with a wide brim for the best protection. Babies and children should always wear wide brimmed hats in the sun. Don’t forget to protect your eyes. Wear good quality, wrap around sunglasses. Wraparounds stop the sun from getting in at the sides. Buy these for children too – toy sunglasses can do more harm than good. Sunscreens Sunscreens can be useful for protecting our skin, but they will not protect us completely on their own. This is why using sunscreens together with shade or clothing can avoid sunburn. You should never use sunscreen in order to spend longer in the sun. What to buy The sun protection factor or SPF tells you the amount of protection the sunscreen gives against UVB radiation. Sunscreens are all tested the same way. So it is the level of protection they give you against the sun that matters more than the price. National guidelines recommend you use at least factor 15 (the higher the better). Choose a sunscreen that has good protection against UVA rays as well as a high SPF. This is because both UVB and UVA rays can cause skin cancer. In the UK, the level of UVA protection might be shown in one of two ways…. Star rating You should see a star rating of up to 5 stars on UK sunscreens. The higher the star rating, the better. But the actual UVA protection also depends on the SPF of the sunscreen. For example, an SPF 25 with 3 stars may screen out more UVA overall than an SPF 10 with 4 stars. A symbol A symbol with the letters UVA inside a circle is a European marking. This means that the UVA protection is at least one third of the SPF value. Using sunscreen Don’t assume that because you have put on sunscreen, you can stay out without burning. No sunscreen, no matter how high the factor, can provide 100% protection. And no sunscreen, whether it’s 15 or 50, will provide the protection it claims unless it is applied properly. Therefore it is very important that you put on sunscreen generously and regularly. Research has shown 8 4 june 2 0 1 4
that people apply much less sunscreen than they need to. And worryingly, many people burn more frequently when they use higher factors of sunscreen because they stay out in the sun for longer. There is a concern that higher factor sunscreens may lure people into a false sense of security. Do check the use by date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 2-3 years, and will last about 12-18 months after opening. So it is usually fine to use last year’s, but not a bottle from 5 years ago! You should put your sunscreen on before you go out in the sun so the cream can be absorbed. Then put on another layer to make sure you haven’t missed any bits. If needed you should apply moisturiser, insect repellant or make up afterwards. This is particularly important if you are using an organic (chemical) sunscreen. Vitamin D and the sun We all need some sunshine to make enough vitamin D to build and maintain strong bones. But it is not possible to give a one size fits all recommendation on how much sun is needed as this depends on a number of different factors. You do not need to sunbathe and should not have to redden or burn your skin to make enough vitamin D. Once you have healthy levels of Vitamin D, the body just gets rid of any extra. But some people are more at risk of low vitamin D levels, such as those with darker skin, people who wear clothing that fully covers them, pregnant women and older people. Protecting children Babies and young children have delicate skin. All children, no matter whether they tan easily or not, should be protected from the sun. Children with fair or red hair, pale eyes or freckles are at most risk. Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight, especially around midday. Checking for skin cancers It is important that you make a habit of checking your own skin for any changes. This is especially important if you are at a high risk of getting skin cancer or have had treatment previously. If you find any changes in your skin that happen over a few weeks or months you should visit your GP. If your GP is worried that a skin abnormality may be a skin cancer they will refer you to a skin specialist. Depending on local NHS services you may be referred to a rapid access suspected skin cancer clinic. There are guidelines for GPs so they know when to refer someone with a suspected skin cancer to a specialist. There are private walk in skin clinics in the UK. But before you pay for this type of service, do make sure you know exactly what method of screening they use and whether it is reliable. Check if the people carrying out the screening are medically qualified because sometimes they are not. If you want a skin change checked then it is best to see your GP.

Ponseti club foot clinic The Ponseti clinic is run by leading consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeons. This will help the foot to gradually adopt a normal position before treatment continues with special boots and ongoing monitoring.
Tongue Tie clinic ‘Tongue tie’ is very common in babies, and whilst not all cases need treatment, ‘dividing’ the tongue tie is helpful where there are breastfeeding problems. This can be done without general anaesthetic at Bupa Cromwell Hospital and a dedicated clinic is held every Monday morning from 8.30-10.00am. Appointments for all clinics are booked via the Contact Centre on 020 7460 5700. Private ‘self pay’ patients (not claiming on health insurance) do not need a GP referral for these services. Bupa Cromwell Hospital is an internationally renowned private hospital, based in the heart of Kensington and Chelsea. The hospital had an unannounced Care Quality Commission inspection last year and was found to be fully compliant. This recognises the Cromwell’s commitment to the highest possible standards of care. Overcome Depression Without Drugs
Depression is the most common mental health disorder in the country, affecting about 1 in 10 people every year.
T
hose who suffer from depression will face difficulties in all aspects of their life – from getting out of bed in the morning, to conducting healthy relationships or focusing on office work. Unfortunately, the most commonly prescribed treatments for depression don’t always work. In fact, studies show that up to two thirds of those who suffer will continue to do so despite taking antidepressants and/or undergoing psychotherapy. Even more troubling is that many patients suffer crippling side effects from medication, such as weight gain, decreased sex drive, sleep problems and tiredness. Many patients feel this negates the whole reason for taking them in the first place. Up until recently, very little could be done for those who suffered this fate. However, The London Psychiatry Centre, a leading clinic on London’s Harley Street has now introduced and pioneered repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). This is an exciting newly licensed and approved treatment in the UK to treat depression which involves stimulation of an area of the brain that regulates mood through a pulsed
8 8 june 2 0 1 4
magnetic field. rTMS is safe, effective, and without side effects. Treatment using rTMS is short but intense, around 25 minutes per session. Five sessions each week are required for 2-6 weeks. If a person suffers from depression, the chances of fully recovering with antidepressants and therapy are 30% after 3 months. After one year of multiple drug attempts, the chances increase to 55%, whilst placebo gives a 25% recovery. In comparison, at The London Psychiatry Centre 66% of the patients treated with rTMS have fully recovered after an average of 4 weeks of treatment and without side effects. Further, the positive rTMS effects were found to last up to a year. Dr Rafael Euba of The London Psychiatry Centre comments: “What I like to see as a psychiatrist is my patients improving. That’s what I find rTMS is able to achieve, and that’s very pleasing — it’s very rewarding.” To find out more, contact The London Psychiatry Centre at www.psychiatrycentre.co.uk or call 020 7580 4224.
Beat Depression without Antidepressants at The London Psychiatry Centre
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a ground-breaking treatment for adult patients with Clinical Depression which involves painless stimulation, via a pulsed magnetic field, of an area of the brain that regulates mood. rTMS offers a solution to those suffering from depression who have not responded to antidepressant medication or psychotherapy. The London Psychiatry Centre is the only clinic in the UK that offers patients cutting edge, fully approved and licensed rTMS treatment as routinely used by the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Harvard and other clinics in the USA.
At The London Psychiatry Centre, 66% of the patients treated with rTMS have fully recovered after an average of 4 weeks of treatment and without side effects. Figure 1: The London Psychiatry Centre Recovery Rates

Even with the best of intentions it’s still hard to keep to the simple mantra eat well and exercise regularly isn’t it? words by Terry Rodham; Hogarth Group Wellness Manager
I
n our speedy modern society where we are constantly juggling work, social lives, finances, family and relationships, it is often a regular exercise regime and a healthy diet that proves a step too far. Too confusing, too hard, too time consuming, and let’s face it, easy to ignore, nutrition and exercise are aspects of every day life in which we could all do with a little help.
We recognise these challenges at our clubs and provide members with expert guidance and regular one to one contact combined with the latest in fitness technology to make the process of maintaining and improving personal well-being easier to manage, understand, and achieve. Balance Is The Key Here at The Hogarth and The Park Club, we have adopted the concept of Wellness, defined as ‘’a balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling 9 2 june 2 0 1 4
of wellbeing.’’ The key to that statement is balance. Not only do we consider it our job to guide you inside the gym, we also undertake to guide you outside the gym to help you achieve this balance because, after all, there is more to life than eating chicken salad and pounding the treadmill! Starting On The Right Path From the moment you walk through the doors of the Hogarth and The Park Club, you have at your disposal the support and expert guidance of a highly qualified personal trainer. Beginning with an initial Wellness Gym Consultation where your goals, challenges, exercise background and lifestyle are discussed, members are guided through another four one to one training sessions in which a highly personalised routine is designed. This one to one time is vital not only to explain, repeat, feedback, tweak and perfect the gym routine, but also to discuss other important
h e a lt h & b e au t y
areas such as activity outside the gym and nutrition, aspects which come together to form a fuller picture of Wellness. Remember, true Wellness is only achieved with balance, so perhaps a stroll along the river in the sunshine on a Sunday afternoon instead of a gym session could be more beneficial to your long term success? The ‘’Key’’ To Success Many people feel lost in the gym environment, lacking direction with a general feeling of ‘’doing the wrong thing’’. Using the latest in gym technology, members of our Clubs carry their workout information with them on a special ‘’Wellness Key’’ which can be inserted into any machine, providing the user with information such as the correct weight to use, the number of repetitions, or the resistance level and time on an exercise bike. Not only does this give the user confidence, it also stores all your exercise results such as calories burned, weight lifted or distance covered so that a review can be conducted by a trainer and goals/targets adjusted accordingly. This is just one example of how we use technology to make things easier to manage. Regular Contact Regular contact between our members and trainers is our major focus. In addition to the five sessions at the beginning of a members Wellness journey, members are also entitled to one complimentary session every month in which progress can be discussed, technique and form checked and goals reassessed. It is this regular contact that we believe keeps our members engaged in their routine and confident to continue. Yet we go one stage further, understanding that not everyone will be able to arrange one to one sessions around their busy lifestyles: using our ‘’Coach’’ application, our trainers are able to stay in regular contact with members wherever they may be, by sending and receiving messages
through the members Wellness Account. If you’ve had a period of inactivity on your account, you can expect an email from one of our trainers to make sure everything is okay! Staying Connected With all the gadgets we have at our disposal these days, there really is no excuse not to stay connected with your club and trainer. You can use your smart phone to access your Wellness account wherever you are, be it on the train, on an overseas work trip or even at the pub! In a hotel gym and need your routine? No problem! Why not use your laptop or tablet to register physical activity from home, such as a game of tennis or a cycle around the park? You can even go one step further and attach the Technogym MyWellness key to your hip before going for that Sunday stroll and download the information when you get home, recording the calories burned even through you have not stepped through the gym doors! And of course, if all this technology is too much, simple face to face time is always available from our welcoming and knowledgeable staff. We love to see members enjoying their routine and reaping the benefits of regular exercise, wherever it may be Is now the time to get support to help you on a path to Wellness? Groin Pain
words Dr Ralph Rogers MD PhD MBA, Medical Director The London Sports Injury Clinic 108 Harley Street
With the World Cup just around the corner, it’s not only A-List footballers that succumb to sports injuries. Suffering with a chronic groin pain is a common presentation in Football Medicine. Studies have found groin injury to be the fourth most common injury affecting footballers.
M
muscle unsupported. In addition 40% of patients diagnosed with Gilmore’s Groin also have torn adductors. Minor and moderate tears usually respond to adductor exercises and physiotherapy. Patients with severe adductor tears usually require adductor tenotomy or release.
Symptoms include pain during sports movements, particularly hip extension, twisting, turning and kicking. This pain usually radiates to the adductor muscle region and even the testicles, although it is often difficult for the patient to pin-point the exact location. After sport, the patient is stiff and sore. The day after a game, turning or getting out of bed or a car often causes pain, as may coughing, sneezing and sit-ups.
The success of surgery for groin disruption (Gilmore’s Groin) depends on accurate diagnosis, meticulous repair of each element of the disruption and intensive rehabilitation according to a standard rehabilitation programme. Surgery is indicated in footballers, who are unable to play, or fail to respond to rehabilitation. The surgical treatment consists of restoring normal anatomy with a six-layered structural repair of the inguinal region. So if you have a player suffering with this type of injury it is best to get him to a specialist Groin Unit where the repair can be done in the off season and the player will have plenty of time for holiday and to recover from the surgery.
any people refer to groin pain incorrectly as “Sportsman’s Hernia”. The term hernia is a misnomer as the condition rarely exists with a true hernia present. The syndrome where chronic groin pain persists, particularly in athletes, was first identified in 1980 by Consultant Surgeon Mr Jerry Gilmore and subsequently labelled “Gilmore’s Groin”.
Any exertion that increases intra-abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, or sporting activity can cause pain. In the early stages, the person may be able to continue playing their sport, but the problem usually gets progressively worse. As pain in the groin and pelvis can be referred from a number of problems, including injuries to the lumbar spine, the hip joint, the sacro-iliac joint, the abdomen, and the genito-urinary system, diagnosis of Gilmore’s Groin requires skillful differentiation and pubic examination. The diagnosis of Gilmore’s groin is based on the patient’s history, clinical signs, and, increasingly, an MRI exam. Typically, there is specific pain on coughing and sneezing, as well as sitting up and squeezing the legs together. Gilmore’s groin is a complex condition, and why many cases are misdiagnosed as a groin strain or a hernia. The injury occurs at the junction of the leg and the torso. It involves the area (called an aponeurosis) where the abdominal muscles (Internal obliques, External obliques and Transversus abdominus) converge to form the inguinal ligament. The external oblique muscle has an archway through which several nerves and vessels pass. In Gilmore’s groin, a groin muscle tear causes this archway to open up much wider. Further tears in the obliques cause them to lift up and away from the inguinal ligament, leaving the transversus abdominus 94 JUNE2014
At The Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic , following discussion with surgeons around the world, recently the classical Gilmore technique has been modified with the aim of reducing the recovery time, whilst maintaining the strengths of the full anatomical repair. Many patients show signs of pubic bone stress injury (previously known as osteitis pubis) and in these cases the inguinal ligament can divided as it inserts into the pubic tubercle to reduce the tension (an inguinal ligament tenolysis). In addition the permanent suture used for the darn has been changed from a large nylon stitch to a smaller, less reactive prolene stitch. Whilst still giving the immediate strength that is required to allow rapid rehabilitation, this stitch should produce less tissue reaction and so less discomfort. The formal repair is now known as the Marsh Modification of the Gilmore Technique. steps to perfect legs How to get legs worth showing off
Get perfect pins to be proud of with our top leg-toning exercises and leg-enhancing beauty tricks. We’ve got the only five tips you need to get legs to rival Angelina Jolie so take note and then prepare to bare, ladies!
Perfect legs Step 1: Leg-beautifying exercises
Perfect legs Step 3: Tackle cellulite
The first step to perfect pins is toning them up. Perfectly smooth, moisturised legs probably look great but perfectly smooth, moisturised and toned legs will look even better. The best way to achieve this? Squats, leg lifts and good old fashioned walking.
Cellulite manifests itself onto the pins of even the skinniest catwalk models and experts say that around 90% of us have it (lucky 10%!). The ‘orange peel’ effect is caused by fat deposits just below the surface of our skin, causing the skin’s surface to appear dimply and uneven. The gold standard treatment for getting rid of cellulite? Dry body brushing. By sweeping over your skin up towards your heart with a firm body brush on a daily basis, you stimulate the lymphatic system to disperse the fatty pockets built up under the skin. This takes dedication as you will need to repeat your body brushing routine daily but the result is soft legs with less dimples. Resistance training and cardio workouts are great exercises to blast the cellulite if you decide to go down the training route or – if you’re looking for a quick temporary fix – fake tan can dramatically reduce the appearance of cellulite.
What and how? Squats – for hips, glutes, quads and hamstrings Place your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart with your feet facing forward and extend your arms out in front of you with your palms to the ground. Inhale into your stomach and start moving your hips back while slowly bending your knees. As your bottom sticks out, make sure you keep a straight back with your shoulders upright. Exhale as you reach the ground and then rise up again, using the strength of your legs and core to support you. Leg lifts – for mainly the thighs and bum Lay down on your right side on top of an exercise mat or carpeted surface and rest your right elbow on the ground. Take a deep breath and then exhale as you move your left leg up towards the sky as high as you can. Repeat on your other side and do two sets per day for optimum results. Walking – for inner and outer thighs and fat burning Walking is the perfect leg toning exercise if you favour cardiovascular work over strength training. For maximum results, walk up a hill or another inclining surface – this will boost your metabolism, burn fat and tone your thighs.
Perfect legs Step 2: Exfoliate and de-fuzz Before you start your hair removal regime, remember to exfoliate first. While you take a bath or shower, apply an exfoliating leg scrub (or mix sugar and olive oil together for a natural, purse-friendly option) and scrub your skin in a circular motion. Do this to open your pores and sloth off dead skin cells before carrying out your hair removal regime – this minimises the risk of ingrowing hairs. Say hello to smooth, sexy legs! 1 0 2 june 2 0 1 4
Perfect legs, Step 4: Moisturise After all of that exfoliating, hair-removing and dry body-brushing, the next step on our road to perfect pins is of course moisturisation. We don’t just mean you should slap some moisturiser on and call it a day – invest in a good body oil to apply while you’re showering or bathing as this will give your legs a much needed moisture-boost. Once you’ve finished showering, pat your legs dry and apply a moisturiser that’s right for your skin type. By applying your moisturiser when your legs are still slightly damp, it’s easier for the lotion to sink in.
Perfect legs, Step 5: Natural-looking tan There’s no doubting that a bronzed glow can make you feel healthier, sexier and thinner and what better way to achieve this look than with a fake tan? Not only are UV rays harmful to your skin, a natural tan from the sun can also be a time-consuming process. Instead, use a fake tan such as the Dove Summer Glow build-up moisturiser. This keeps your legs hydrated and smooth while covering minor imperfections and adding a sun-kissed glow to your pins.
Beautiful!

Hay fever Hell
H
ay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects one in five people in the UK. According to John Collard, clinical director of Allergy UK, hay fever is a type of allergy. It happens when your body makes antibodies in response to certain triggers, such as pollen. It’s most common in children and, particularly, teenagers, but you can develop hay fever at any age. The symptoms usually include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and stuffy nose. What causes hay fever? In Britain, hay fever is mainly caused by grass pollen. Around 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. Tree pollen can cause hay fever too. Around a quarter of hay fever sufferers are allergic to tree pollen. Mould spores and weed pollen can also trigger symptoms. The pollens that cause hay fever vary from person to person and region to region. The amount of pollen in the air will affect how bad your hay fever is. There’s more likely to be more pollen in the air on hot, dry, windy days than on cool, damp, rainy days. Research shows that pollution, such as cigarette smoke or car exhaust fumes, also makes some allergies worse. When is hay fever worst? The time of year at which you begin to experience hay fever symptoms depends on the types of pollen you’re allergic to. Trees release their pollen in March to early May while grasses release pollen from late May to early August. Weeds and certain shrubs release their pollen in late summer. The hay fever season can therefore last from March to October. And if you’re unlucky enough to be allergic to more than one type of pollen, you may only have just two or three months without symptoms in the winter before the cycle starts again. Tips to relieve hay fever Avoiding exposure to pollen is the best way to reduce the allergic symptoms of hay fever: K eep windows shut at night and first thing in the morning S tay indoors when the pollen count is high (between 50 and 150) Wear wraparound sunglasses. P ut some petroleum jelly just inside your nostrils to trap some of the pollen. D on’t mow the grass or sit in fields or large areas of grass. Wash your hands and face regularly. Avoid exposure to other allergens, such as pet fur, or environmental irritants, such as insect sprays or tobacco smoke. Hay fever treatment As with most allergies, the best way to control hay fever is to avoid the triggers. However, it’s difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer. Even straightforward hay fever can be debilitating, causing runny eyes, sleepless nights, bunged-up nose and headaches. A range of over-thecounter products can treat the symptoms of hay fever, including tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops and creams. Antihistamines are the usual treatment for the main symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes and runny nose, while steroid nasal sprays are the main treatment for a stuffy nose. Hay fever in pregnancy Hay fever during pregnancy can be a particular problem. Hormonal changes make nasal congestion more common during pregnancy, and this often gets worse during hay fever season. Pregnant women are also advised not to take some hay fever medicines. Hay fever and asthma Speak to your GP or pharmacist before you decide on a hay fever treatment. It’s particularly important to speak to your GP if you have asthma. Hay fever often makes asthma symptoms worse. If this happens, you may need to increase the dosage of your asthma medication.

JOHN BLY ANTIQUES
Daguerreotypes In this age of video-recording, will we ever again reminisce by flicking through the family photo album?
I
hope so, providing the compilers have noted the names and details relating to the photographs. Sadly the grandest albums, those Victorian monsters with embossed leather covers, full of images of stern faced and elaborately dressed men and women rarely have such information and so we will never know who those people really were. The same may be said of the little boy illustrated above wearing an American Unionist uniform from the Civil War of 1861 – 65. The print is Tintype, a photographic process which emanated from the Daguerreotype, the earliest recorded means of photographic printing, first described in 1839. This was a complicated, lengthy and expensive procedure requiring a studio and the result was an image on glass, normally displayed in an individual leather presentation case. Tintype, introduced during the 1860’s, was simpler and could be achieved in a portable booth. Thus the photographer could travel anywhere and the print produced immediately.
1 0 6 june 2 0 1 4
This little soldier was obviously taken in a studio but it begs the question why was he dressed up like this? Surely it is unthinkable that he was actually going into battle. Astoundingly, not so. A by-no-means-rare episode during the closing stages of the war at a tiny stockade called Fort Tyler records that 18yr old Confederate Sergeant McNeil was despatched to raise recruits from the local town. He returned with just three boys, all under the age of 14. Once fully armed they fought for 7¾ hours before surrender and were later described as ‘True Heroes of the Southern Cause’. But I am told by the experts that the best explanation for our young Unionist is that he was so dressed – at considerable expense – and photographed as a souvenir for his father while the latter was on active duty. That seems logical but at the moment it is supposition. Is there by chance anyone amongst you, dear readers, with a better answer or even an idea of who this young soldier might be? BOWLES & WYER
Your Garden: The Most Forgotten Room of Your House T
he housing market crash led many people to stay in the homes they were in and improve them or even extend, rather than moving up the property ladder. Even now as the market steadily improves, we are seeing an increase in extensions and renovations. Extending a property normally makes one think about an additional bedroom or maybe a larger kitchen diner – the most forgotten extra room we have at home is our garden. Improving your garden is a cost-effective way of extending your home. You will argue, no doubt, that in this country you cannot spend time in your garden all year round or use it like you would a room. But this all comes down to design. If designed correctly, there is no reason why a garden cannot be used in all seasons as an extra room to your house, whilst adding significant value to your property. Often a garden will be landscaped according to what is already there. This is where a good and a great landscape designer differ. The brief is everything; understanding how you want to use your garden and interpreting this information to deliver imaginative solutions. Bowles & Wyer is an award-winning landscape company, based on the Herts/Bucks border, who believe that successful design is distinguished by imagination and intuition; finding solutions from unexpected sources. Partner, John Wyer, explains “We transform our client’s ideas into living, responsive landscapes”. Bowles & Wyer offer professional design services, with every designer trained to at least degree level and possessing vast experience and expertise. Whilst the design is hugely important, there are three principal phases to consider whether you are planning an extension or transforming a garden: design, build and finish (or in gardening terms, aftercare). Key to the transformation, is continuity of workmanship. If you were adding a new room to your house, the architect would be involved at each stage to ensure the build reflected the design and was not misinterpreted in any way. This continuity of craftsmanship is also paramount when transforming your garden. Bowles & Wyer have extensive in-house technical experience and knowhow, and can therefore look after the ‘build’ phase of your project without subcontracting the work or you needing to find a contractor to build the design. Bowles & Wyer offer garden design, build and aftercare to ensure the design meets your requirements and captures your imagination; the build successfully interprets the design and is of the highest quality; and the aftercare ensures longevity of the project. Many companies will offer only design or one other element, but at Bowles & Wyer the importance and ability to see the project all the way through is what differentiates the company. In the words of famous landscape gardener, Humphrey Repton: “No work can be so well completed as under the eye of the person who designs the improvement”. So do not forget your garden – it can extend your home, put value on your property and offer enjoyment all year round. Bowles & Wyer - garden design, garden build & garden aftercare. On average, people spend in excess of £30,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space. There are a multitude of choices when it comes to creating your dream kitchen...
Y
ou need to decide on the space that is required over and above your units, worktops, appliances and sink unit. For example, if you have children, is extra eating space required? Are you looking to entertain and relax aswell as prepare and cook the evening meal? Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. The interior style of the rest of your home could dictate the style of your kitchen space, especially if it is open-plan, so you need to take this into consideration.
The design of your kitchen can cover a variety of themes... Contemporary kitchens The sleek look will provide instant gratification. Providing a more open feeling adds to the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs. French country kitchen Combining rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. We are talking an Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. Freestanding features and copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger, rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware all combine to give you that French country feel. Shaker Style kitchen This design appeals to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island can make an attractive addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households 1 1 6 june 2 0 1 4
of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points. Cabinets & Worktops Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Chrome is effective and never dates. Avoid wooden worktops near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. You could also mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces. Kitchen Flooring The flooring in your kitchen space is as important as the kitchen itself, so you need to get it right. Take advice from a flooring expert, or consult your kitchen designer. You can find more information and choices on kitchen flooring later in this guide. Kitchen Lighting Safety comes first in any kitchen, so for high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting – i.e., focused, directional, bright light. Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. You can find more information and choices on kitchen lighting later in this guide. A bespoke kitchen will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. You can have it designed especially for your needs and tastes, and built by the best in the business.
k i tc h e n l i f e
O
ne of the first things you’ll need to consider when planning your new kitchen is the lighting, as electrics and fittings have to be installed at the start of the project, before plastering, decorating and the fitting. It’s an integral part of any scheme and this is your one chance to get it right. The key to a successful scheme lies in layering the effects, so you should try to zone the lighting according to its use working (task), dining and mood (ambient) and creating the wow factor (feature). It’s important to concentrate on all three and consider dimmable solutions for even more flexibility. Installing ceiling lighting can pose some difficulties, but it is possible to illuminate a kitchen without using any ceiling lights. There is a wide range of spotlights, downlighters, uplighters and strips that can be placed either under or on top of kitchen units. It also means you can be more creative, as it’s possible to conceal fixtures and fittings.
How to plan your kitchen lighting Essential for preparation and cooking, lighting can also be used to create mood and atmosphere at the flick of a switch.
Every kitchen, no matter how large or small, needs efficient task lighting. This is as much from a safety point of view as anything else. You’ll need direct lighting wherever any food preparation is taking place - worktops, sinks and hobs - to make sure chopping and cooking can be done safely and without shadows. Undermounted options are perfect for this and be sure to look for recessed or semi-recessed options, as exposed light fittings will collect grease and dirt more easily.
For the hob area, choose an extractor with four or more halogen lights and if the island is to be used for prep, highlight it with pendant lamps combined with recessed downlighters. These should always be controlled on a separate circuit, so make sure you talk to your electrician before any installation takes place. The latest trend is for easy-to-use sensor-operated products. They’re extremely practical - when preparing food, there’s no need to wash your hands every time you need to flick the switch, simply wave your hand in front of the sensor. Drawer and cabinet lighting can also be operated on sensors, instantly 118 JUNE2014
coming on when the door is opened. Not only do they look great, the lights make it much easier to find that elusive corkscrew or pizza cutter. Open-plan kitchens with a dining area or those with a breakfast bar need a combination of adequate lighting for eating, with softer lighting for after-dinner conversation. Dining tables and island units will benefit from a series of overhead pendant lamps (rise-and-fall versions can be moved up or down when needed) while lamps and wall lights will create a warm glow that sets the mood. Mood lighting Mood lighting can change the ambience of the kitchen from practical preparation zone to a chill-out or entertaining space. Plinth lighting - especially strip lights around an island unit or breakfast bar gives the illusion of floating furniture, which can create a magical feel at night and is great for wowing guests.
If you have a period property or interesting features, such as an exposed brick wall, that you’d like to highlight, consider accent lighting that can be used to focus on a particular area or design element in the room. This is where you have the chance to set your kitchen apart. The LivingAmbiance by Philips is a range of coloured lighting that can be changed to suit your mood. ‘The kitchen is probably the most actively used room in the home,’ says Ashley Smith, consumer lighting marketing manager for Philips, ‘so lighting should be an integral part of its design. Good lighting improves the functionality, appearance and energy efficiency of your kitchen and also impacts on your wellbeing. LivingAmbiance lets you access a whole host of colours and shades of white to create the mood you want - from cool to warm - whether entertaining friends or cooking for the family.’ Sensio’s LED RGB 30W remote control and receiver is another option, as the remote control enables you to create any mood at the touch of a button. Choose from a slow or rapid colour change with a memory function to activate the settings previously used. Other effects include colour-changing back-lit glass splashbacks and light strips beneath the worktop on an island unit.

Extend your kitchen The kitchen is the heart of the home so extending it to create a big open plan space to relax with the family and wow your friends is a good call.
A
kitchen extension is one of the most popular home improvement projects and one that’ll really add to the enjoyment and value of your home. In this article we look at the practicalities of planning your kitchen extension.
First things first You’ll be investing a lot of money in this project so ask yourself how you plan to use the space: Do you want a more flexible space for the family to enjoy? Do you want a space for entertaining? Do you want a separate utility room? Do you want to bring the outside in with doors opening on to the garden? As well as considering the here and now think about 5-10 years down the line and the changing dynamics of your family. While play space may be important now, in a few years’ time it’s homework and hangout space they’ll be after. Option 1: Knocking through Knocking down a stud partition wall between your kitchen and dining room is the simplest option. Get a structural engineer in to check that the wall isn’t load bearing. If it is you’ll need an RSJ (rolled steel joint) to take the strain. If your property is leasehold you’ll need permission from the freeholder.
Option 2: Extending out If you’ve got time, space and budget this is the perfect blank canvas for you to create your ultimate kitchen. With no pre-existing constraints to work around, you can decide exactly what goes where, from your granite island to the position of your sockets. Got your heart set on a contemporary glass ‘box’ that brings the outside in?
Option 3: Adding on Another popular home improvement is installing a glazed or sky-lit roof over the galley side return on a Victorian terrace. Opening up the space makes it work that much harder and who doesn’t want a wider, lighter kitchen?
How much does an kitchen extension cost? The Halifax Home Improvement Survey says the minimum cost of a kitchen extension is £20,000. Experts suggest that a kitchen extension can increase the value of your home by as much as 11% so if you’ve got space and budget, go for it. 1 2 6 june 2 0 1 4
Getting planning permission for a kitchen extension Good news: planning permission often isn’t necessary for small extensions. If you’re knocking through from kitchen to dining room it isn’t usually required. Neither is it necessary if you’re converting a garage, although if you’re enlarging your building’s footprint you’ll need to run it past your local planning officer. However if you live in a listed building, conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty, you’ll need to ask your local authority for permission. Likewise if you’re planning a substantial kitchen extension you’ll need permission and full architectural drawings of the layout and elevations. Planning applications cost around £150 in England and take around eight weeks to process. It’s worth stating the obvious - all regardless of how big or small - must comply with Building Regulations. As a general rule it’s best to submit full plans to your local authority building control department to be on the safe side. The practicalities Bear in mind that moving water, gas and electrical points will add to the cost and complexity of the work. You’ll need a Corgi registered installer if you’re installing a gas boiler or cooker and all electrical work requires a compliance certificate under Part P of Building Regs. Another key consideration is drainage. Outlet pipes for sinks, dishwashers and washing machines need direct access to external drainage so these often dictate the layout of your kitchen extension. Remember if you start moving pipes you need to check that all work complies with Building Regulations. Consider the flow of natural light at different times of day as this will inform where you need artificial lighting. Some people choose to position their table where there’s most natural light, others prefer their main workspace to be naturally lit. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Light and airy conservatory style kitchens can get hot in summer, cold in winter and subsequently suffer from damp and condensation. You’ll need expert architect advice to find the right solution for your property. One final thing While the extension is being carried out there will be times when your kitchen is unusable so if you have the space to create a makeshift ‘kitchen’ it’ll be a real stress-saver. It’s only short term, so consider moving to a friend or relative’s. Bear in mind that a kitchen extension is not a quick job. Depending on the scale you could be talking a couple of weeks or a couple of months. Just keep telling yourself, it’ll be worth it in the end!

Contemporary Kitchen
Design Tips
Upon moving into a new home, many people want to redesign their kitchen. For many people the kitchen is the centre of the home. It is the place where we create our culinary masterpieces, and gather with friends and family.
O
ne trend that is particularly sought-after is a contemporary kitchen design. The first thing that separates a contemporary kitchen from other styles is its clean lines and minimalist feel. Although some people equate contemporary with cold, it does not have to be so. “Cool” materials such as glass and steel used in a contemporary kitchen design can be “warmed” up by the strategic use of accessories or colour. Six major components that make up a contemporary kitchen are: Glass Glass is an important feature of minimalist design. Glass can be incorporated into contemporary kitchen design through windows, lighting, shelving or toppers for an island. Cabinetry can also have glass doors which provide a visual of the inside.
Metal The most popular type of metal used in the design of a contemporary kitchen is stainless steel. It is most often used in appliances such as refrigerators, ovens and dishwashers. The use of stainless steel gives an urban feel to a kitchen. Lighting When designing a contemporary kitchen, lighting is key. Many contemporary designs incorporate recessed lighting into ceilings and underneath cabinets. If however, you don’t’ like recessed lighting, track lighting or fixtures made of metal or glass can also impart a contemporary feel. Marble/Granite Marble and granite are usually used for countertops but fit well within contemporary kitchen design. They are both cool to the touch, allow for
1 2 8 m ay 2 0 1 4
sharp clean lines and depending on the colour and design chosen really impart a big city feel to your kitchen. Colour As part of the minimalist design ethic of a contemporary kitchen, “cool” colours are usually used. “Cool” colours are those that come to mind; blues, greens, grey, silver and even black and white. Using these colours in your kitchen invokes a modern feel. When putting these elements together, four other design points to consider are: backsplash, cabinetry design, appliances and accessories. When it comes to backsplash, most contemporary kitchens use either tile or metal; your personal preference will decide. As far as cabinets are concerned, some designs don’t require pulls to open, while others use metal hardware. Having a built in design also provides great storage (because clutter does not fit into contemporary design at all). Appliances are an easy way to impart some contemporary style into your kitchen. As I mentioned earlier, many refrigerators, freezers, ovens and the like come in stainless steel. If you don’t really like the look of metal, all black or all white appliances also project a contemporary feel. The last component of contemporary kitchen design is that of accessories. Accessories are another way to easily modernise your kitchen, with a minimalist design. Good kitchen design
starts right under your feet
T
o put on a fantastic floor show, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards.
Vinyl flooring Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. Stone or slate Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you. 1 3 0 june 2 0 1 4
Laminate This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. Hardwood A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. Ceramic tiles A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

Eco-friendly kitchens
10 ways to be green Use recycled steel and glass Stainless steel and glass not only look stunning, but also reduce the footprint you leave on the planet. Stainless-steel sinks are generally made from up to 70% recycled material. Recycled glass worktops are hardwearing and have anti-bacterial protection, so are perfect for a busy kitchen. Choose sustainable timber For a country kitchen that’s as eco-friendly as it is stylish, go for units, flooring and worktops made with Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood - this means the timber comes from sustainable sources. Turn off your appliances Keeping your kitchen appliances on standby wastes energy. Turn them off manually or get yourself a standby saver that automatically switches off all appliances when they are not in use Recycle Recycling is key to saving the planet, but it can be a hassle. Make it easier by creating a dedicated recycling area with a range of stylish bins for different types of kitchen waste. o for green G cleaning Cleaning products can considerably 1 3 2 june 2 0 1 4
expand your ecological footprint. Switch to eco-friendly products instead and consider making your own from no-impact kitchen staples, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Try salvage chic Upcycling furniture and accessories is a great way to add vintage style to your kitchen and reduce your impact on the environment. Use reclaimed materials from salvage yards for flooring and have kitchen cabinets made from reclaimed timber. Paint it green Always choose eco-friendly, water-based kitchen paints made of natural ingredients, with no solvents and low or no Volatile Organic Compounds Opt for natural, hardwearing floors Made of linseed oil and pine resin - both sustainable materials linoleum is also warm under your feet and very hardwearing. Other eco-friendly alternatives include bamboo and cork Save water Kitchen appliances can use up a lot of water. Choose an efficient washing machine to reduce waste and run it on full load for optimum efficiency. Mind the dishwasher The latest generation of green dishwashers will consume significantly less energy and water than older models. Always run them at full load: the half-load setting uses more than half the energy and water used on a full load. Choose a small model if there aren’t many of you in the house.

TAP INTO THE RETRO KITCHEN REVIVAL
I
n the interior design world, there’s a lot of hype about traditional, modern and contemporary kitchens but if you’re looking for something with a quirky yet timeless edge, here are a few retro kitchen ideas. Getting the retro style into your kitchen is bang on trend right now as more and more manufacturers of kitchen appliances are including retro-styled items into their range. Large kitchen appliances such as fridge freezers can really set the tone of the retro-styled kitchen, but in order to make the most of the look you really need to match the rest of your kitchen with similar styling. You need to decide on the theme or era you would like your kitchen to be. Some fun ideas are the American diner style 50’s, the mod look of the 60’s, or the bohemian look of the 70’s. A retro style has a fun, lively feel to it, with bright colours, wild designs and an overall sense of “flair”. There’s nothing laid-back or casual about retro-style decorating. So, how can you bring a retro style design to your kitchen? Let’s take a look at some common elements of this energising decorating style: 1950s: Perhaps the quintessential colour scheme of the 1950s was pink and turquoise. These colours were used on appliances, walls, floors and counter tops, as well as on vinyl-covered kitchen chairs with futuristic steel or aluminium legs and coordinating tables. Another popular colour scheme in the 1950s was red and white, for the more contemporary American diner of the fifties. 1960s: The 1960s moved towards more neutral colours, such as earth tones, browns, copper, black and white. Copper-coloured appliances were the rage, with neutral earth tones or browns complementing the appliances. Black and white kitchens were also popular, with snow-white appliances, black counter tops and black and white checkerboard-tiled floors. Pop art had a firm footing in the 1960s. Artists such as Andy Warhol and David Hockney with their pop art references to mass culture (soup cans, comic strips, images of icons like Marilyn Monroe) crossed over into interiors, and on to murals, wallpaper and posters. Whether you choose the hippy ethnic look or plastic space age, it will be far out! 1970s: The 1970s brightened up a little with harvest gold, avocado green and poppy orange as the popular kitchen decorating colours
1103 J4U june N E 2 02 10 41 4
of the decade. Every kitchen and laundry appliance were available in these colours. Kitchen cabinets were made of dark wood to complement the brighter earth tones. Checked wall tiles, curved worktops and cabinets complete the look. 1980s: Fresh, clear colours came into vogue in the 1980s, putting behind two decades of earth tones. Kitchens in the 1980s were decorated in country blue, country pink, cobalt blue or hunter green. Lighter-coloured cabinets, such as oak or maple, were installed to further brighten up the kitchen decor. White appliances reappeared and “country” accessories or decorating themes were hugely popular. Retro Style Furniture Retro style furniture has an abstract feel to it, with each piece almost fighting for the limelight as the focal point of the room. 50’s style American diners are what you need to have in mind when designing a retro kitchen and one of the easiest ways to recreate this look is with a breakfast bar. Breakfast bars are incredibly practical and can have a high visual impact when slotted subtly into the kitchen layout. The high bar stools are an absolute must; if you currently have a bright accent colour then choose your kitchen bar stools in this colour. Curves Creating features such as curved kitchen worktops, breakfast bars, dining extensions or fluid worktops gives the kitchen an organic look that’s very much in keeping with modern retro styling. If you’re upgrading and including a brightly coloured retro fridge freezer, for example, it’s likely to have much more attention to detail in the lines of the shape than your standard white kitchen appliance. Carrying on this curvy, sleek look into moulded and shaped worktops draws the decor together, making your kitchen the true heart of the home, as it’s supposed to be. In terms of fixtures such as lighting and kitchen taps; chrome suits the retro theme quite well whilst it’s bang on trend for modern kitchens too. Having a retro kitchen in your home is the perfect way to create a unique kitchen design that differs from the typical modern layout. Finally, don’t overlook the final details – vintage tea, coffee and sugar jars, light fittings, prints, fabrics and tea towels all go a long way to finishing off the retro kitchens look.

the perfect solution to your space needs
E
stablished in 2008, Estbury Basements have become one of the leading basement companies operating in and around the London area. Their growth and success has largely been down to their specialist knowledge and experience coupled with their personal client approach. The company has, and continues to be built largely on referrals and recommendations from past and present clients.
Estbury Basements was formed initially, when their owners were reconnected through a mutual friend some 6 years ago after not seeing each other for over 15 years. They originally met at school 20 years earlier! Danny had been working in basements the entire time and Richard had a building company that was looking to capitalise on the ever-increasing demand for basements. It made perfect sense to combine their knowledge and expertise. The idea was to create a company that could compete with the largest out there but strip it back, lose the sales staff and big offices and offering the clients a direct and personable approach without compromising on the workmanship and final finish. This meant that they could offer an excellent service for a very competitive price, which very soon propelled them into the company they are today. Still applying those rules as their foundation, Estbury Basements have built up a great team around them, including a full design department consisting of a highly experienced Architect, Engineer and Interior designer, all with proven backgrounds in basement designs.
1 4 0 june 2 0 1 4
In addition to this they also have a very specialist and knowledgeable site management and personnel team but managing all the while to keep a close-knit team, they have resisted the urge to grow further and risk losing touch with their clients. Estbury Basements are proud of their highly experienced construction team and have a designated fit-out arm for the perfect finish. 2014 has seen the launch of their new division that caters just for waterproofing and specializes in transforming cellars into usable spaces. They can either offer a full bespoke turnkey service taking you through the planning stage, design, construction and fit-out through to hand over or manage each section separately. Either way they are confident they can help you transform your home Danny and Richard have seen a tremendous growth over the past few years in basement requirements due to the increasing cost of properties limiting the options to relocate so the demand for basements has never been greater. Please feel free to call Estbury Basements for a free no obligation consultation. Either Richard or Danny will be at the initial meeting and you will have constant contact with them throughout the whole process for complete piece of mind. Origin pools PERFECTING THEIR CRAFT SINCE 1982
S
ince Origin’s inception over thirty years ago the world has changed considerably. A recent survey in The Times showed our changing tastes are never more marked than when it comes to the possessions we desire most. Today as a nation the top three on our wish lists are a high performance car, a designer watch and a swimming pool. In the eighties people were content with a car phone and a dishwasher! Today the world of swimming at home couldn’t be more different. Beautifully designed buildings nestling in gardens, within easy reach of the home, or in many cases attached, as a perfectly blended extension, using all the same colours and fabric as the main house. Interiors are constantly changing too. Recently the trend has moved away from the timber appearance, and gone towards painted finishes, resulting in a brighter state-of-the-art feel that reflects light beautifully, and shows off the pool to great effect. Origin’s designers can sense these changes of taste, and are constantly looking for exciting embellishments to add to what is their tried and tested principle - to create carefully designed
well built constructions that benefit from only the best new innovations that the increasingly sophisticated swimming pool world has to offer. And talking of principles, Origin’s main objective has always been to take every single project from concept to completion - meaning that the teams, many of whom have been with the company since those early days, are responsible for every element of the process internally, from design to building and the final fitting. This makes Origin an exception in the complex world of pool construction, and goes some way to explaining why the company is recognised as the leading builder of indoor pool houses. A reputation acquired over thirty years of technical progress. Today the company’s flagship range is the Olympic, widely accepted as the ultimate way to swim at home. But at the late development stage is the Eco Eco Pool House Pool House, an innovative design that benefits from today’s eco thinking and is set to change the rules of pool house technology. So Origin’s world has never looked better. They change with the times, constantly listen to the thoughts and ideas of their increasingly sophisticated clientele, and deliver their finished products beyond expectations. PEUGEOT ONYX sofa
T
The all-new ONYX sofa formed the heart of the display at Milan Design Week as a statement in pure form and materials. The three-metre long seat takes its inspiration from the 2012 ONYX trio of superbike, supertrike and supercar.
he ONYX supercar was powered by a 600bhp hybrid powertrain; yet just as memorable was its innovative bodywork made from carbon fibre combined with copper and its cabin of felt and newspaper-derived wood. The ONYX sofa has been designed as a static partner to that and has been built from hand-crafted Volvic volcanic lava stone that is seamlessly joined with hi-tech carbon fibre. It was conceived by PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB as the perfect demonstration of a made-to-measure furnishing concept. Seven additional sculptures Customers of PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB furniture will be free to choose their object and their materials. Each piece will then be a unique creation, guided by the essence of the raw material. To demonstrate this, the ONYX sofa will be accompanied in Milan by seven sculptures. These will include lamps, shelves, armchairs and tables: designs that explore other alliances of materials, marrying obsidian with concrete, red ferrous jasper and steel, quartz crystal and aluminium, sculpted wood and 3D printing, black palm plus basalt and marsh oak and Corian. It took 70 days to make this ONYX sofa in carbon fibre and Volvic volcanic rock and the price has been set to reflect that at £113,300. Prices for other creations will depend on the cost of the materials chosen by each client. What the experts say… PEUGEOT styling director Gilles Vidal: “At Milan we made a link between the ONYX Concept Supercar, a combination of efficiency plus audacious, natural materials, and the ONYX sofa. By using a sharp straight cut in the rock, this contrast in materials is powerful, voluntary and assumed in the way we look at the materials and how they are used. The carbon fibre with its very structured and technical texture has had its shape sculpted precisely to the volcanic stone with its texture and fault lines. While it’s been perfectly adjusted in dimensions and proportions it still follows the natural form

and has an acceptance of not being in control of such a powerful natural material as shown by the stone mason’s random chisel marks.” Head of PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB Cathal Loughnane: “This project was started in May 2013. From the beginning we had a very raw, very powerful sketch. The ONYX sofa is an illustration of a new concept that we intend to explore: unique pieces of furniture that are made to measure to suit the choice, origin and personality of the customer. However, they must always follow a common theme: the union, via a pronounced, clear cut, between hyper-technological materials such as carbon fibre, glass fibre, aluminium and raw and natural materials like rock, wood and stone. In a world where technology changes products very quickly, where people grow tired of things very quickly, we want to offer technological furniture that remains respectful of nature’s materials and the ancestral craftsman’s skills, a balanced marriage between performance and responsibility.” Peugeot Design Lab Although it was launched in Paris on 12 June 2012, the PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB was actually created in 2010. The PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB was conceived to take advantage of a wealth of knowledge and experience that comes from over 200 years of industrial creation and 125 years of automobile manufacturing. Working as a global brand design studio, its objective is to employ the considerable and wideranging expertise and facilities at its disposal. This will enable it to develop strong and coherent brand strategies and identities and design products for external clients from any non-automotive sector. Currently it comprises 10 designers but it is in the unique position of being able to draw on the skills and experience of 6000 engineers from within PSA Group. It is headed up by Cathal Loughnane, an Irishman who spent 10 years working in interior and concept car designs for the PSA Group. The ONYX sofa and furniture collection can be custom-made to order, via the Peugeot Design Lab website www.peugeotdesignlab.com
