This year represents the 60th occasion that the PGA Championship has been played, along with the tenth anniversary of BMW’s arrival in the Surrey heartland of Wentworth Club as the newest Partner alongside the European Tour and the world famous golf club. In June 2014, the historic fields of Hurlingham Park will play host to one of the most hotly anticipated on the sporting and social calendar. Now in its sixth consecutive year, Chesterton Humberts Polo in the Park 2014 will return to the beautiful surroundings of leafy Fulham, for a weekend of ferociously competitive on-field action, a variety of off-field entertainment and worldclass pitch-side hospitality. Since the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. If you want a once in a lifetime experience this March, look no further than the National Gallery and the dramatic, spectacular art of Paolo Veronese. As the first and potentially last opportunity to see his work displayed, the exhibition celebrates Paolo Veronese as one of the greatest painters of all time. His works, that influenced artists such as Van Dyck, were grand and theatrical and captured the opulence and splendour of life in Renaissance Venice.

EXPERTS Your guide to private maternity care at The Portland Hospital
If you’re considering private maternity care, you’ll want to find out as much information as you can in order to make the best decision for you and your family. The Portland Hospital is London’s only private maternity hospital, and last year our dedicated midwives provided exceptional levels of care and support to over 1,700 mothers-to-be. They understand the questions and concerns that you’ll have at this important time, so this is their guide to help you make an informed choice on your maternity care. At The Portland Hospital, you’ll find a nurturing and supportive environment in which to welcome your baby into the world. Our team of world-class obstetricians and midwives can offer you and your partner control over how you want to give birth, supported by the highest standards of comfort, safety and clinical excellence.
Can I choose the type of birth I want? You can opt for either consultant-led care, where a consultant obstetrician looks after you during pregnancy and birth, or midwife-led care, where our small team of expert midwives support you throughout your pregnancy and delivery. Either way, you’ll develop a close relationship with the team in a welcoming and relaxed environment, where your care is tailored to your personal choices. All birthing options will be available to you where medically suitable, including water birth, natural delivery or caesarean section. And you’ll always receive one-toone midwifery care on the labour ward, supported by high staff-to-patient ratios of 1:4 during your antenatal and postnatal care. Throughout your pregnancy and delivery, our midwives will be on call 24 hours a day to offer advice and reassurance to both you and your partner.
Is pain relief readily available? You’ll have 24-hour access to a consultant obstetric anaesthetist who will administer epidurals and other types of pain relief as soon as you decide that’s what you want. Once you’re comfortable again, they’ll continue to monitor that it is working well for you until your baby is born.
What happens in an emergency? We are committed to the highest standards of safety and have a range of on-site emergency facilities, with three operating theatres for planned procedures and a dedicated emergency operating theatre on the labour ward. The latest data from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology confirms our emergency caesarean section rate to be very low – just 6.2 per cent compared to the national NHS average of 11.6 per cent. A dedicated neonatal intensive care unit, special care baby unit and transitional care provision are all available for babies born from 30 weeks, alongside a highdependency unit for mothers who may require a higher level of monitoring. We have an excellent safety record and our rate of temporary admissions to intensive care is extremely low (just
Premium delivery packages start from £7,330
0.002 per cent, compared to the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ expected rate of 0.25 per cent), but on the very rare occasion when this might be necessary, you will be transferred to the adult intensive care unit at our sister hospital just around the corner.
What about aftercare? Following your baby’s birth, you’ll stay in one of our private en-suite rooms or exclusive suites. You can stay with us for as long as you need to – your package includes one night’s stay and we can arrange for additional nights if you would like to stay longer. Your partner is welcome to stay with you overnight, and you can both enjoy our full range of room services. Our team of midwives will look after you and help with breastfeeding and our nursery nurses can care for your baby while you get some well-earned rest between feeds. You’ll also be able to attend our postnatal classes.
What does the package include? Our delivery packages start from £7,330, and you don’t need private medical insurance. You can join the service at 12, 20 or 30 weeks of pregnancy.
Our midwife-led care package includes:
• all antenatal appointments with the midwife team • two consultations with a named consultant obstetrician • all routine ultrasound scans • all blood tests as routinely required • one-to-one midwife care during delivery • 24-hour consultant anaesthetist epidural services on site • 24-hour stay in hospital in an en suite room with the option to stay longer • facilities for your partner to stay overnight in your en suite room • consultation with a physiotherapist • a six-week postnatal check with a midwife.
Where can I find out more? The next step for most couples is to come and see our facilities for themselves. Located in central London, we are open for tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and are happy to answer any questions you may have.

The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair BATTERSEA EVOLUTION, BATTERSEA PARK, LONDON SW11 29th APRIL – 4th MAY 2014
T
hree times a year The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair presents more than 140 exhibitors from across the UK and Europe selling decorative and traditional antiques, 20th century design, textiles and works of art. What makes the Decorative Fair unique is the fantastically inspiring selection of accessories from mirrors and lamps to glassware, natural history items and objets trouvé – all carefully chosen by the exhibitors to bring a touch of style and the unusual to decorating schemes. The Foyer display theme will focus on ‘Using Textiles as Art’. Many antique textiles have become too precious to use for their original purpose: dowry textiles such as suzanis, needlepoint for upholstery, embroidered silk clothing, tribal weavings. They are today preserved and mounted for display as wall art, and in their unique way demonstrate skill, beauty and cultural traditions. Textiles can also provide a large volume of art at a far better price than a painting. Domestic textiles also celebrate female artistry of past centuries: many of these pieces would have been created by women for their own or their family’s use. Their labour-intensive endeavour to create practical yet beautiful textiles can be admired and appreciated today. Also included will be formal tapestries and rugs woven originally as art but which combined beauty with practicality (warmth); needlework pictures and objects that demonstrate the skills of women with leisured hours, and commercial decorative textiles, such as Asian embroidered silk panels that were created in response to a European demand for the exoticism of the orient from the 17th to early 20th centuries. The display will be curated by exhibitor Molly Hogg, who has 30 years’ experience dealing in antique textiles from the world over. All works will be drawn from dealers at the Fair and will be for sale. AN ENGLISH MAHOGANY CAMEL BACK SOFA, CIRCA 1900 (NEW UPHOLSTERY AND FABRIC) £3,600

The Spring edition of the three Decorative Fairs each year is also a good place to source garden decoration, in stone, marble, metal and terracotta. Find statuary, pots planters and urns, fountain heads, antique garden implements; seating such as curved or straight stone benches, vintage metal chairs and sun loungers; vintage arbours and frames, étagères (plant stages) and mirrored metal window frames for decoration of the orangerie, conservatory, pool and garden house; even rustic decorative tables often complete with aged moss! Needless to say the Fair is a primary source for interior decorators and trade buyers hunting for those ‘just right’ pieces for client projects. And famous faces often seen attending the Fair include: from the design & art world - Sir Paul Smith, Jemima Khan, Isabel Goldsmith, Ben de Lisi, Christopher Bailey, Patrick Cox, Howard Hodgkin, Charles Saatchi, Cath Kidston, Alex and Olga Polizzi, Annabel Elliot, Kelly Hoppen, Nicky Haslam , Veere Grenney, John Minshaw, Colefax & Fowler, Anthropologie, Soho House, Hackett, Ralph Lauren Retail. from the entertainment world - Eddie Redmayne, Sienna Miller, Jennifer Saunders, Richard E. London Marathon 2014
ince the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. An iconic image of the event are the thousands of runners pounding the streets with sheer determination, to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out from the crowds. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded more than £35 million in grants to develop sport and recreation facilities in the capital and other areas in the country where the London marathon stages events. The elite races start at 9am for women and 9.45am for men, with the London Marathon wheelchair races beginning at 9.20am and the mass race at 9.45am. Britain’s double Olympic and world champion Mo Farah will face some of the greatest marathon runners of all time when he makes his full marathon debut at this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon. Farah races over 26.2 miles for the first time when he will join an elite men’s field that
22 APRIL2014
includes marathon world record holder Wilson Kipsang, Olympic and world marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich, reigning London Marathon champion Tsegaye Kebede, and London course record holder Emmanuel Mutai. Farah ran the first half of the race in 2013 to assess the course and opposition in preparation for his full marathon debut this year. David Weir will be aiming to become the greatest wheelchair racer in the event’s history by winning his seventh title on the famous course, and Tatyana McFadden will defend her women’s wheelchair crown after the American’s year of dominance on road and track. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include one of the world’s leading hairdressers, Andrew Barton, world famous chef Michel Roux, former England footballer Michael Owen, Coronation Street and Holby City actor, John Michie, Made in Chelsea star Hugo Taylor, and actor Dominic West. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. For more details go to www.virginlondonmarathon.com

2014 BMW PGA ANNIVERSARIES GALORE AS MANASSERO DEFENDS THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN
T
his year represents the 60th occasion that the PGA Championship has been played, along with the tenth anniversary of BMW’s arrival in the Surrey heartland of Wentworth Club as the newest Partner alongside the European Tour and the world famous golf club. Italian Matteo Manassero, who established a landmark of his own last year by becoming the youngest winner of the Tour’s flagship event at the age of 20 years and 37 days, defends his title after thwarting Luke Donald’s hat-trick bid in 2014. As always, a world class field will assemble on the iconic West Course, with Manassero and Donald joined by a glittering array of stars including reigning US Open Champion Justin Rose, Race to Dubai champion Henrik Stenson, Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. It was in 1955 that England’s Ken Bousfield won the inaugural playing of the event at Pannal in Harrogate, and since then the Roll of Honour has included legends of the game such as the BBC’s Peter Alliss, Ryder Cup captains Bernard Gallacher, Tony Jacklin, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam and Colin Montgomerie. The latter is the only person to win three times in succession from 1998-2000. Then in 2005, BMW sealed their partnership with the Tour and Wentworth

when Argentine Angel Cabrera triumphed, to be followed chronologically by David Howell, Anders Hansen, the irrepressible Miguel Angel Jiménez, Paul Casey, Simon Khan, Donald in 2011 and 2012 and finally Manassero. It was a win which propelled Manassero to new heights, and the four-time European Tour winner cannot wait to return for the 2014 edition, which once again will be played over Wentworth Club’s stunning West Course from May 22-25, and relive some of those wonderful memories. “I’m really looking forward to returning to Wentworth, especially after my win last year,” said the gentleman from Verona. “Wentworth has a really special place in my heart, I really cannot wait to get back there and I’m looking forward to defending my BMW PGA title as best I can.” Looking back over the last 60 years, Peter Alliss, three-time winner of the Championship (1957, 1962 and 1965), said: “I played in the very first PGA Championship at Pannal in Harrogate in 1955 and am very proud to be a three-time winner of the event, having won at Maesdu in Llandudno in Wales in 1957 then again at Little Aston in 1962 and Prince’s three years later.” Jamie Birkmyre, BMW PGA Championship Director, explained: “This is a special year for the BMW PGA Championship, with two anniversaries to celebrate. In addition to the event’s 60th, we are looking forward to

The BMW PGA Championship is now a Blue Riband event on the British sporting calendar, attracting a world class field and we have some exciting plans to celebrate this year’s Championship, which will be one of our biggest and most thrilling yet.” The BMW PGA Championship offers six days of high quality entertainment, including Official Practice Day, Celebrity Pro-Am and four rounds of compelling competition. ARPER LONDON
The name Clerkenwell comes from the Clerks’ Well in Farringdon Lane, where London parish clerks performed the famous Medieval Mystery Plays throughout the Middle Ages. Since the Industrial Revolution, the area has housed craft workshops, printers, clockmakers and jewellers. Traditional crafts, such as printing and bookbinding still flourish, as do graphic designers. In the last two decades, Clerkenwell’s unique variety buildings have been transformed into central studio and workshop spaces, attracting an unprecedented concentration of architectural, design and creative practices. The global businesses that have made Clerkenwell their home have shaped the borough into the UK’s most important generator of creativity and innovation. Serving an infinite variety of other industries easily accessible from across London, Clerkenwell has become home to a plethora of new media agencies, graphic and interactive design studios and more than 200 architectural practices - more per square mile than anywhere else on the planet. In addition, Clerkenwell houses over 60 design showrooms including world leaders Vitra, Poltrona Frau, Flos and Moroso. For more details please visit www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com

Oxford clinch victory in 160th University Boat Race
Boat Race highlights In another moment of controversy the 2014 BNY Mellon Boat Race saw Oxford romp away to one of the biggest margins of victory in recent years.
O
xford University beat Cambridge by 11 lengths in the biggest victory since 1973 to win the 160th BNY Mellon Boat Race, extending their dominance with their fifth triumph in seven years. The hot favourite Dark Blues won the toss and opted to start from the Surrey Station, which would give them the advantage of the big Surrey bend a third of the way into the Race. Therefore it was Cambridge who would have the early advantage around the Middlesex bend after the end of the Fulham Wall. Off the start both crews sprinted off in the mid 40’s, Oxford taking an early lead. As expected the crews were very close to each other with Cambridge warned by first time Boat Race Umpire Richard Phelps. The Light Blues used the bend to their advantage reeling in Oxford’s lead, hence as they passed the Town Buoy the crews were level. With both crews at 35 Oxford began to exert their power, pulling out to a 1/3 length lead along the Crabtree Reach. Then shortly after the Mile Post , 5 minutes in to the Race, came the moment that effectively settled the result. Phelps had warned Oxford who now had a ¾ length lead, they responded but Cambridge moved with them and as the Umpire issued a warning to Cambridge the blades of Light Blue 2 man Luke Juckett came into contact with that of Sam O’Connor the Kiwi in the Oxford 7 seat. Juckett was knocked out of his stride, crabbed and was nearly thrown from the boat. Oxford seizing the moment powered away as Cambridge floundered, missing five effective strokes. Worse, Juckett’s rigger was bent meaning his pitch was completely wrong so he could only make a negligible contribution to the speed of his crew. At Hammersmith Bridge Oxford had an 8 second lead meaning they could choose their own water. They continued to pile on the pressure at a steady 33 strokes a minute and continued to move away from a demoralised Light Blue crew. Even with a strong headwind and rough conditions after Chiswick Eyot, Oxford’s progress was relentless. At Chiswick Steps the Oxford lead was
30 APRIL2014
16 seconds over 5 lengths, at Barnes Bridge 28 seconds and at the finish a massive 32 seconds. Cambridge cox Ian Middleton raised his hand in protest after the finish but to no avail. Richard Phelps later explained, “I was concerned where Oxford were, so I warned Oxford and they moved immediately. A second later I was happy where the crews were but I then saw the Cambridge bow just twitchin towards Oxford, so I warned Cambridge. The next thing there was a slight contact but the impact was great.” Talking about the Cambridge appeal he said that “Cambridge’s view was that when the foul occurred Oxford were not on their station. From my perspective Oxford were on their proper station; quite clearly. Contact could only have been in neutral water or at the worst Cambridge were off their station. I advised Cambridge I was overruling their appeal.” Steve Trapmore Cambridge’s Head Coach was understandably disappointed, “I can’t give you an informed decision without seeing the replay. We knew this race was going to be tough and I’m immensely proud of this crew.” The winning president Malcolm Howard thanked his crew and coach Sean Bowden for an amazing year. He felt the clash but “I don’t think it affected the outcome, we were moving really well, we’d withstood their big push early on and had started to take seats. We were moving on them and would have kept moving.” Bowden for his part said, “We can look back on this year with a lot of pride. I felt this year we could achieve really high standards. The clash is one of those things that can happen. Cambridge put a lot of pressure on early on but we were moving away. Steering is always competitive and this is one of the things that can happen when you take risks.” The crowds came out on a gloomy Sunday evening to line the River Thames and cheer the teams on with the same enthusiasm as if it were a gorgeous sunny day.

Hurlingham Park More than 100 years ago, Hurlingham Park hosted regular weekly fixtures of polo as it was then the Hurlingham Club’s number one polo field and weekend crowds would gather for the summer social scene. Polo continued to be played in Hurlingham Park right up until 1939, but, with the onset of World War II, the fields were given over to the ‘Dig for Victory’ food production campaign and Hurlingham’s polo days became a distant memory. In 2009, City Events Ltd created the City Polo Series and brought polo back home to its central London roots. Chesterton Humberts Polo in the Park is now the London fixture in the Series’ global calendar and Hurlingham once again plays host to this very traditional English summer past-time. Aegon Championships In-Form Dolgopolov Joins Murray & Berdych In Aegon Championships Line-Up In-form Alex Dolgopolov has joined Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych in the field for the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club, 9th-15th June, and says he is playing the best tennis of his life. Dolgopolov, who has beaten the two most recent Grand Slam champions and three of the four highest ranked players in the world this year, has risen from 57 in the rankings at the end of 2013 to No.23. Aegon Championships Tournament Director Ross Hutchins is delighted that Dolgopolov has committed to play at The Queen’s Club. Alex is a natural born entertainer, and his recent form is just a glimpse of how special a player he is,” said Hutchins. “In terms of sheer talent, he is one of the most exciting players in the sport, and the things he can do on a tennis court bring spectators to their feet. With Alex, Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych already confirmed, we are in for a fantastic week at the Aegon Championships.” Dolgopolov, who reached the final in Rio de Janeiro and holds wins over Rafael Nadal, Stanislas Wawrinka and David Ferrer this year, is already looking forward to it. “It’s a really good tournament, the courts are really good, and it’s great to be in London for some weeks,” he said. “It is all good preparation for Wimbledon, I really enjoyed it last year and I’m looking forward to being there again.”Dolgopolov has been ranked as high as No.13, but even though he is currently 10 36 APRIL2014
places lower, he believes he is in the form of his life.“This is the best tennis I’ve ever played,” he said. “I’ve been in the Top 20 before but I wasn’t close to this level - mentally, physically, everywhere. I was risking a lot (on the court), I would play unbelievable matches sometimes before, but I was not as solid as I am now on the court. I am taking tennis more seriously now, I’m more concentrated on the game than on other stuff, and if you do the hard work, have the right team, and have a bit of luck, it pays off. I’m really happy that I’m getting results.” Established in 1886, The Queen’s Club was the first multipurpose sports complex ever to be built, anywhere in the world. The Club offers its
Members the opportunity to play Lawn Tennis, Real Tennis, Rackets and Squash on some of the finest courts in the world. The Club has been investing in its future and over the past five years completed projects include a new gymnasium, resurfacing of four artificial grass courts, refurbished Ladies Dressing Room, reinstatement of the Rackets Galleries and viewing areas, a new Terrace Room and the junior lawn tennis club to name just a few. Along with first class sporting facilities the Club also offers excellent entertaining and dining facilities, including an elegant restaurant, cafe, museum, and the President’s Room, all of which are located within the Members’ Clubhouse. Lord’s Bicen
ord’s has long been seen as the ‘Home of Cricket’ and the game’s spiritual ‘headquarters’. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket. Its owner, Marylebone Cricket Club, remains the guardian of both the Laws and the Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides (which play around 500 games a year) perform a key role in promoting cricket - in Britain and elsewhere.
businessman Thomas Lord staged a game between Middlesex and Essex at a newly built ground in what was then known as Dorset Fields. By 1811, MCC had moved to a new Ground in the Eyre Estate of St John’s Wood. This ground proved unpopular but when plans emerged for the Regent’s Canal to be built straight through it, Thomas Lord gratefully accepted compensation and moved the Ground to its current location in 1814.
In addition, Lord’s is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), as well as the European Cricket Council (ECC). It is also the setting for the state-of-the-art MCC Cricket Academy, the unrivalled MCC Library and the world-famous MCC Museum.
MCC v Rest of the World
Above all, Lord’s is the setting for some of the best cricket in the world.
The MCC and RoW men’s teams will be captained by Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne respectively. Also confirmed to play in the match are Adam Gilchrist, Paul Collingwood, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Daniel Vettori and Shaun Tait. Many more big names are to be announced. The MCC side will be managed by MCC President Mike Gatting and the RoW side by ex-South Africa bowler and MCC World Cricket Committee member Shaun Pollock. Tickets for the match are sold out but hospitality packages are still available.
The 200-year anniversary of the current Lord’s ground is being celebrated in a number of ways throughout 2014. For more information on the Lord’s Bicentenary visit www.lords.org/bicentenary. Welcome... The independent school system in the UK is one of the finest in the world, and you are fortunate to have some of the best schools in the country right on your doorstep. In today’s economic climate, making the right choice for your child’s education is of paramount importance. Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is best for their children. Our Education Life series is an invaluable resource for any parent considering private education. Many schools will be holding open days during the course of 2014. Encourage your children to come with you and get their feedback after each visit. Take a notebook with you and write down the positive or

here are 2,500+ independent schools in the UK which are independent of local or central government control. Independent schools offer a wealth of facilities and high teaching standards that enable students to achieve great results year after year. Independent schools are in the unique position to provide a truly bespoke education for your child. Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision that takes plenty of time and research. There are a wide range of independent schools specialising in different age groups and needs. PRE-PREPARATORY SCHOOLS
(AGES 2 YEARS - 7 YEARS)
Pre-preparatory schools - also called nursery schools or kindergartens correspond to nursery and infants stages in local authority schools. In pre-preparatory schools children are taught to read, write, develop numeracy and learn to play. Preprep schools are often attached to specific junior schools.Pre-prep school is the first time most children will experience education, as opposed to the daycare provided by kindergartons. Children will have to learn the basics of mathematics, science and English, and a host of other subjects. Outside the classroom, many of the children will be having their first proper experience with team sports, music and/or choral tuition, and the arts. PREPARATORY SCHOOLS
(AGES 7 YEARS -11+ OR 13 YEARS)
Preparatory or prep schools, have a full range of subjects leading to admission to senior schools at 11+ or through the 13+ Common Entrance Examination. As their name implies, the preparatory schools are focused primarily on preparing boys and girls for their senior education, and the important public exams that come with it. 2 APRIL2013
Free of the National Curriculum, prep schools can differentiate their curricula according to what they think best prepares children for their later education. Most prep school children will be learning a foreign language from the very first year, and don’t be surprised to see subjects like Latin, Philosophy and Physics in the classroom, with cricket, rugby and tennis all on offer during games. As children reach the end of their time at prep school, most will look to the Common Entrance Exam as their gateway into the senior schools. It is during this transition process that senior schools are also looking for talented pupils for scholarships and other awards, so the very able students may be asked to attend further examinations/ recitals/matches &c, depending on where their particular strengths lie. In the state system, children are tested by the Government SATs, however many schools in the independent sector will have their own internal methods of measuring the performance of the children. There are around 499 prep schools in the Independent Association of Prep Schools, one of our constituent Head’s Associations, collectively educating over 134,000 children. SENIOR SCHOOLS
(AGES 11 YEARS -18 YEARS)
Most of the pupils in independent education are in senior school, educating over 350,000 senior school students in almost eight hundred schools. Independent Senior Schools offer approaches to education, subjects, facilities and sports unparalleled in the state sector – students can study History of Art, Government, Russian and Japanese, and try their hands at Astronomy, Ceramics or Equestrianism. They could be on their school judo or sailing team, and take trips all over the world. Whatever your child’s particular strengths, passions and interests, there is almost certainly a school which can offer the chance to try all of them.

Cradle to College The benefits of allthrough education. WORDS LOUISE SIMPSON, HEAD, BROMLEY HIGH SCHOOL
S
chool choice, it seems, is a fraught process; parental expectations, fierce competition for the very best schools, hours of tutoring, pre-testing and waiting lists are an inevitable part of many children’s lives between the ages of 8 and 12 as they approach the end of their junior education and look forward to the challenges of senior school. From my perspective, as Head of an all-through school, it seems that those who come off worse in this scenario are the children. I interview lots of 10 year old girls and I am amazed at how little time they have in Years 4, 5 and 6 just to be children and to pursue the co-curricular clubs and activities that they love so much. They feel under pressure and spend a lot of their time practising for endless entry tests. That can’t be right, can it? Fortunately, many schools now offer all-through education ‘from cradle to college’ as it were and there are huge benefits to this. Securing your child a place in your chosen school at the age of 4 years gives you security for the future. In that school they will develop familiarity with the school, staff and their peers over an extended period and the school, crucially, will not be under any pressure to prepare your child for any entry tests. Just imagine the freedom in the curriculum that comes with that! Upper primary teachers in all-through schools can focus on exciting, creative project work, allow your child to follow their dreams and passions and try new topic areas well away from the Key Stage 2 or Common Entrance syllabuses. This freedom generates more innovation in the teaching and learning and makes for exciting, sparky lessons taught by teachers who are unencumbered by the straightjacket of having to teach to the test. All-through schools offer many benefits to the older pupils too; there are myriad leadership opportunities for the senior pupils, clubs and societies, reading partnerships, sports coaching, clubs and visits are just some of the ways that pupils can work together, and the whole school can benefit. Choosing a school for a 4 year old can be tortuous; but that need be the only choice you make. If you choose an all-through school at 4 you can sit back and enjoy watching your child grow, progress and thrive in an environment that will suit them from cradle to college. Please get in touch with us at admissions@bro.gdst.net. We look forward to meeting your daughter at our next open event.

We enjoy a central London location with excellent facilities. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. There is a staff/pupil ratio of 1: 3.5 and the average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. At Fairley House our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school. Many of our alumni have had excellent grades at GCSE and A-Level and progressed to top universities and now have successful careers in a range of areas.

onhead Preparatory School in Wimbledon, is a thriving independent Jesuit preparatory school for boys aged 4-11 years. Applications from other denominations, faiths and those of no faith are welcomed, and 25% of places are reserved for non-Catholic applicants. Children are prepared thoroughly for selective state and independent schools, as well as maintaining a regular number of pupils transferring to Wimbledon College, a Jesuit secondary school. There are 320 pupils in the school. The school roll has doubled in the last 7 years and has benefitted from a £4.5m investment in additional and improved facilities during that time. Jesuit education seeks to educate young persons of competence, conscience and compassion. It is hoped that Donhead leavers, in whatever profession they pursue, will be ‘leaders in service’; taking the lead in serving the needs of those who need their help most. To cultivate this spirit of generosity in the pupils is the core purpose of the school. 6 APRIL2013
The children are urged to do their very best in all that they do, develop their talents to the full and, in so doing, be able to make a real difference to others when the opportunity comes to them. The by-product of this is considerable success in academic and sporting endeavours. Last year 9 Scholarship Awards were secured to selective independent schools and, in the last three years, two of the year groups have been National Champions at rugby, winning the National Schools Rugby Tournament. The school also has 3 choirs and an orchestra. The quality of music is a joy of the school. Donhead is a strictly non-selective school, as it is not just clever boys who can make a difference. Places are awarded on a date of registration basis only, with preference given to siblings and to boys transferring into our Reception Class from The Ursuline Preparatory School. irgo Prep School has a rich history of educating young minds. Founded in 1848, it is part of a Catholic order where teaching is based on Christian principles with an emphasis on caring and kindness to others. This independent school is open to children of all faiths from 3-11 years. The main objective of Virgo Prep School is to encourage every child to be the best they can be. By maintaining small class sizes, each child receives a personalised education from experienced staff while they develop their talents. Specialist teachers are provided for French, Art, Sports and Music. This approach has proven effective, with all Year 6 pupils achieving 100% in Maths, Science and English before progressing to a wide range of independent, grammar and state schools. Virgo Prep School has been described as “South London’s best kept secret” due to the warm and safe feeling of this small school set in large grounds, with a woodland area providing a superb location for outdoor learning. Each key stage has a separate playground, allowing children to flourish with their peers. The vast playing fields regularly host major ISA sporting events including cricket, rugby, football, golf and cross-country. 8 APRIL2013
The Virgo Prep Nursery provides a nurturing environment where children settle in quickly and enjoy the benefits of being located within the Prep school. Ofsted said “The quality of teaching and learning is outstanding. Children’s attitudes to learning, their behaviour and general level of engagement are excellent, aiding them to make superb progress. The leadership and management are outstanding and extremely effective in promoting an inclusive environment in which every child matters.” In a parent’s words, “I just wanted to thank you and your wonderful school for everything you have done. He has loved every moment of his time at Virgo Prep School and he is truly sad to leave, just as we all are.” Extensive co-curricular opportunities range from additional foreign languages to gardening clubs, from ballet to Tae Kwon Do, allowing the children to gain confidence in a wide range of activities before progressing to the next stage of their educational journey. Nurturing potential
If Rosemead had any qualms about whether the Dulwich preparatory school could maintain its impressive entrance examinations record with an expanded Year 6, it had no cause for concern.
T
he 46 boys and girls who sat the recent secondary transfer examinations have been offered 127 places, with 46 at award level. These include 29 academic scholarships, three foundation scholarships and one bursary.
This is the first time Rosemead has prepared a three-class Year 6 and Arthur Bray, the Headmaster, said the results were testament to the work put in by the boys, girls and their teachers. “We are extremely proud of our children; their success is the result of the unique partnership between parent, teacher and child that starts the moment a child joins Rosemead. The children are nurtured to believe in themselves and to shine in everything they do.” Rosemead pupils were offered places at 32 schools, including Alleyn’s (seven places, an increase of 75% on last year); JAGs (13 places, a 63% rise); and Dulwich College (six places, a 50% increase). There was also a 67% increase in the number of pupils – four – offered grammar school places. Several children secured entry to popular state schools, including Burntwood, The Charter, Graveney and Kingsdale.
10 APRIL2013
There was a significant increase in places at Streatham and Clapham Girls School, Sydenham School, Emanuel, and Royal Russell. A number of places were offered at Trinity and Whitgift, and at the more academically competitive City of London Girls, City of London Boys and St Paul’s School for Girls. The recent enhancement of Rosemead’s art facilities has had a clear impact. A record seven art scholarships were given, plus three music and three sports scholarships. Increasing a school from a two-class entry to three classes from Year 3 onwards is challenging and Mr Bray applauded his staff’s efforts. “The growth in numbers could have adversely affected the closeknit family feel of the school, but the staff have worked exceptionally hard and it is now an even stronger family.” If you would like more information about Rosemead, please contact Debbie Louks-Middleton at admissions@rosemeadprepschool.org.uk or telephone 0208-670 5865. www. rosemeadprepschool.org.uk

A
group of 12 and 13 year-old Sydenham High schoolgirls are hoping they have raised thousands of pounds for disabled mobility charity WhizzKidz by organising a grand charity ball as part of an Apprentice-style charity challenge.
WhizzKidz provides disabled children with the essential mobility equipment so they can lead fun and active childhoods. A wheelchair costs around £1,000 so fundraising needed to go beyond cake sales. Having secured the school’s main hall as the venue the girls hit phones and email to cajole everyone they could think of into helping them make their plan a reality. This included selling advertising space in their programme and collecting an array of desirable raffle prizes worthy of a professional charity fundraiser, from signed sports memorabilia to super-cool Beats headphones. The ball was a huge success but they girls are still fundraising. To donate visit their Just Giving page at: www.justgiving.com/lexie-webb1

WORLD WAR 100
I
BY MICHAEL HALE, HISTORY TEACHER AT MERCHANT TAYLORS’ SCHOOL
n this edition, rather than write on current topics of educational controversy, we are devoting our column to an issue that will be at the heart of the teaching of history in independent schools this year. This year marks the centenary of the First World War, a conflict that changed Britain forever. In 2014, Merchant Taylors’ School will commemorate all those who served, and in particular remember the invaluable contribution made by Old Merchant Taylors’ (OMTs) in a war that we now recognize as the greatest collective undertaking in British history.
DULCE ET DECORUM EST On the eve of war in 1914, the British army was a small, but well-trained fighting force of 247,432 regular officers and men, very different from the mass field armies of France, Russia, and Germany. R.B. Haldane (the Liberal Secretary Of State for War) who created an expeditionary force of six infantry division and one large cavalry division had reformed it between 1906 and 1909. In addition, Haldane had sought to improve the training of officers and looked to the public schools of England to provide suitable recruits. From the 1880s, the public schools had been an increasingly rich breeding ground for potential officers and accounted for three-quarters of the Woolwich entry (for the artillery and engineers) and over one-half of the Sandhurst entry (for officers of other arms) in 1896-1900. Haldane hoped that the public schools would play a part in a rejuvenation of the armed forces and the Ward Committee of 1906 advised that existing school cadet corps and university rifle volunteer units should be united to form the Officers’ Training Corps (OTC). Once founded in 1908, they proved immensely popular, and by 1910, there were 152 contingents in the ‘Junior Division’ at schools such as Eton, Haileybury, and Uppingham, and 19 in the ‘Senior Division’ at universities. Following the outbreak of war in the summer of 1914, the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) was sent to France. Between the summer and Christmas of that year, the B.E.F. lost 16,200 men killed, 47,707 wounded and another 16,746 missing and taken prisoner. Most of these casualties had been sustained by the regular army, which immediately called for volunteers to enlist. In the next eighteen months, 2,466,719 men answered the call to arms, and between August 1914 and March 1915, 20,577 officers were commissioned from OTCs, whilst it is estimated another 12,290 ex-OTC men were serving in the British Army. The schools had done their job but were fated to be racked by grief, on an unprecedented scale, in recompense.
SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD As one of the ‘Great Nine’ schools of England, it was entirely fitting that 20 APRIL2014
Merchant Taylors’ should have a cadet force although the exact origins remains a mystery. While boys were involved in external units from 1878, the official establishment of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) was not until March 9, 1900. It swiftly became an integral part of school life and flourished in the early years of the twentieth century; many former members of the corps served during the conflict. Throughout the war, precisely 1820 OMTs served, including three recipients of the Victoria Cross, the most highly coveted decoration in the British Armed Forces. Lieutenant J.C. Barrett, Midshipman G.L. Drewry and Captain A.O. Pollard were all awarded the VC for conspicuous bravery, whilst 297 other OMTs received war honours. One in six OMTs were decorated for their services in His Majesty’s Armed Forces. With ghoulish symmetry, approximately one in six OMTs were killed on Active Service too, fearful losses for any School to bear. In addition, 245 were wounded or gassed whilst 297 OMTs died, including the great England rugby union international John Raphael.
WORLD WAR ONE HUNDRED To commemorate the centenary of the First World War and the part played by Merchant Taylors’ School in the conflict, the School is inaugurating a series of events – World War 100 – which will run for four years. They include creating an interactive online resource where today’s boys will research OMTs who served in the conflict, and where families with historic links to the school can upload information about the involvement of their ancestors. There will also be an emphasis on the role of Empire, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Merchant Taylors’ today: over 8,500,000 men from all corners of the earth served in the British Army in the First World War. In addition, we will also host guest speakers such as Max Hastings, author of Catastrophe. Europe goes to war in 1914 in April, undertake trips to the Imperial War Museum in conjunction with our annual visits to the battlefields plus art exhibitions, drama workshops and productions, major concerts, poetry recitals, cross-curricular learning and historical scholarship. Finally, we will utilize the school, OMT & Company archives to create a Book of Remembrance for all OMTs who served in World War 1. It is our aim to bequeath a legacy to the next generation of OMTs and we hope that they will understand, honour, and remember the sacrifices made by their predecessors one hundred years ago: “Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day”. We will never forget them.

THE FUTURE ELITE
BY JAMES FOWLER – HEADMASTER, ALDENHAM SCHOOL
O
ne of the aspects of a UK independent education that is so striking to foreigners is the absolutely central role that school sport, and especially team sport, plays in school life. In other countries sport plays its part, but usually beyond the school gates, whilst in a school like Aldenham the routine of sports matches is a prime part of our programme. Just one example; over the last two terms our boys ‘and girls’ hockey teams have played over 170 different fixtures against other schools. In these events, the teams have experienced the chance to compete keenly, sometimes in national tournaments (four of our teams reached regional finals) winning, losing and drawing in roughly equal measure and thereby learning to experience both success and disappointment, hopefully able to treat them “both the same” as Kipling would have it.
125 x 185 Life Magazines1:Layout 1 30/01/2014 14:00 Page 1
It is also clear that the role of school sport is recognised widely by elite sporting development programmes in this country, so that our pupils who are on academy programmes at premiership football clubs, on representative teams for hockey, on national programmes for swimming or gymnastics, or in county teams for cricket are all allowed to compete for their school and learn to lead others by their excellence.

Ham Polo Club 2014 Fixtures
The historic Ham Polo Club is once again gearing up for the summer season.
2014
is looking to be a busy year with several new fixtures. This year will not only feature the games against Cowdray Park but also fixtures against the Guards Polo Club in Windsor. Also particularly worth looking out for is the Gaucho International Polo Festival in September and the Pro Alvear challenge with its famously wild after party on June 7th.
The Dubai Trophy, one of the club’s flagship tournaments, will be played at the club on two Friday evenings this summer. July 18th and August 1st will feature the highest level of polo played at Ham and are without a doubt one of the best opportunity for polo fans to see top international players in action. If you can’t wait to come and enjoy the atmosphere at Ham then you’ll be pleased to know that polo starts on Sunday 5th May. The first big finals day will be May 19th when Oman Air will be sponsoring their first tournament the Ham House Trophy. An action packed final will be followed by a full afternoon of polo matches so make sure there’s plenty of Pimm’s in the picnic hamper. Only eight miles from Hyde Park Corner, Ham Polo Club is the last remaining polo club in Greater London. Founded in 1926, the club has an established and distinguished reputation at over 85 years old. HPC was the first club to restart the game of polo in the UK following the second world war, this was largely due to the efforts of Billy Walsh who was honoured by HM the Queen in 1985 for his efforts reviving the club and the sport. Billy’s career in the game brought a great deal to Ham, he had a huge knowledge of horses and was for many years the Duke of Edinburgh’s team mate. He captained the Ham team that won the Roehampton Cup in 1947, the first post war edition of the competition. The tournament for the Roehampton is now held at Ham and the finals sponsored by Oman Air are held in late August. Ham has had many royal visits over its history. Prince Charles played at the club in several high profile events during the 1980s and 90s. Since 2000 Princes William and Harry have been on the field for a number of charity 70 APRIL2014
fundraisers. Charity days like these at Ham have raised around £2 million over the last 15 years. Ham Polo Club has become one of the most idyllic settings in the capital city and goes from strength to strength. Upon arrival, players and spectators find themselves nestled between the leafy cover of Richmond Park and the River Thames, overlooked by the stunning Jacobean Ham House. The club now boasts one of the busiest schedules of competitive polo and charity events, and known for excellent playing and social facilities combined with a relaxed family atmosphere. As well as these big events there is a full programme of polo every Sunday at Ham Polo Club. Spectators are always welcome and there is plenty of pitch side parking and picnic space. A day at Ham Polo Club is a truly British day out as well as being one of the most inexpensive ways to entertain family and friends. The club also offers social membership which allows you to use the fantastic clubhouse restaurant and bar. Set in more than 21 acres, the Club has 3 polo fields, all suitable for helicopter landings by arrangement. Agreed and paid for in advance, we welcome helicopter landings from all over the country, and are happy to offer 30 minutes parking included free of charge within the landing fee. For advance bookings, please contact helicopters@hampoloclub.com There is ample parking for quick and easy limo access to nearby central London and the surrounding area. Its close proximity to the River Thames means the nearby River Boat service at Richmond can be accessed for trips into and out of London. Twickenham Rugby stadium is just 3 miles away. SPORTING FEET’S ADVICE ON RUNNING Running is one of the easiest sports to do. Here a few quick tips to get you started: Build up slowly – at first just go for a gentle jog and perhaps alternate with walking depending on your base level of fitness. Get some advice and help – ask friends who run where they run and what they get out of it. Also consider joining a local running club/group. Get a pair of running shoes – Sporting Feet will test your gait and fit you for a pair suited to your feet and your running style. Running shoes are lightweight and well cushioned to help absorb impact and protect your joints. Have a target – once you have a few runs completed, you might want to think about a routine and a target. This might be about how often, how long, how far, or how fast you run. You could also consider targeting a 5K or 10k race! 3 Lacy Road, Putney SW15 1NH Tel 020 8780 0558 9 King Street, Richmond TW9 1ND Tel 020 8948 6059 www.sporting-feet.com

LUXURY LIFE... A taste of the Riviera There is no doubt that the lifestyle of the French Riviera is one to be admired, conjuring up images of beautiful weather, beach life and glamorous locations.
I
llustrious towns such as Saint Tropez and Cannes regularly top lists of preferred destinations during the spring and summer months, and this is before we take Monaco, the so-called ‘playground of the rich,’ into account. There is an extensive range of reasons why the Cote d’Azur is so desirable for the discerning traveller and it is for this precise reason that we decided to take a couple of days to experience what the region has to offer. One of the first things to note is that a flight over to the French Riviera is speedy and efficient; taking approximately 2 hours from the UK to Nice. Upon landing at the airport in Nice, we are met by WR Chauffeurs (www.wrchauffeurs.com), a transfer company which provides an extremely comfortable experience for guests. Their range includes our ride, the Mercedes Vito minibus, which is ideal for larger groups. Founded by Jean-Michel and his wife Béatrice, his 24 hour service and availability for the numerous events in the region, such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix, are the backbone of the company. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the lifestyle on the French Riviera is dominated by luxury, be it in the form of sports cars, yachts or palatial villas. The first port of call for many visiting the region is the Principality of Monaco, home of the Monte-Carlo Casino. We make no exception, being driven directly from Nice to visit the Casino and then on to the Columbus hotel in time for brunch. The Columbus is a three star

hotel which was set up by retired British Formula 1 driver David Coulthard and boasts stunning views of the azure waters of the Mediterranean. The venue is surely among the preferred places to stay during the May racing season, when the Principality is alive with colour and events (www.columbushotels.com). La Costa Properties Monaco
(www.lacosta-properties-monaco.com/en) offers an alternative take on accommodation in Monaco, with an extensive portfolio of luxury property; their accommodation offers some of the best panoramic views over the Principality that one can imagine. With lavish, yet tasteful décor, the properties manage to feel like a slick home from home. We are invited into three of their stunning properties where we learn more about the Monaco property market from expert Luciana Gaia Lebon. She details the cost of

It is here where we are invited to stay for a night by Carlton International’s Philip Weiser to discover the model in more detail. Welcomed into the foyer of the estate with a glass of champagne, we are able to discover the elegant décor and intricate design of the villa, which is full of stylish wooden furniture. We are led through to a large dining area, where we immediately understand in more detail the attraction of staying in a villa over a hotel. A private chef, Emmanuel Sofonea has prepared a wonderful array of foods including ginger bread with the creamiest foie gras and a local favourite, cod with ratatouille (www.unchefchezvous.com). Local business Jules Wines (www.jules-wines. com) provides a wide variety of mid-priced regional wines from their Provencal vineyard, Le Grand Cros, to quench our thirst. The food keeps coming and the wine flows and it becomes clear that a villa provides an excellent backdrop to a wonderful dinner party with family and friends in a far more private setting than a hotel. The private chef and the wine delivery service are both superb ideas to make a holiday that extra bit
relaxing. The evening draws to a close and we wake up the next day in the surrounds of the luxury villa. We are confident that we will be heading back to the Cote d’Azur in the not too distant future.

ocated on the historic South Bank of the River Thames in the 306-metre-high, glass-clad Shard, the hotel will be the Hong Kong-based luxury hotel group’s third in Europe, following debuts in Paris in 2010 and Istanbul in 2013. As the tallest hotel in Western Europe and the first high-rise hotel in London, the Shangri-La occupies levels 34 to 52 of the 72-storey Shard. Its contemporary interior design complements Renzo Piano’s masterful architecture and the breathtaking views – unmatched by any other hotel in London – unfold in all directions revealing iconic landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. “Our continued expansion in Europe reflects the growth opportunities for the brand and portfolio,” said Shangri-La President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Dogan. “The Shard is a landmark synonymous with London and we hope to encourage visitors to our hotel, and the surrounding area. We are truly excited to be an integral part of the ongoing development of the South Bank community and the borough of Southwark.” Every detail of the hotel environment has been taken into consideration – from the extensive collection of original artworks on display to the spectacular grand staircase sweeping across double length floor to ceiling windows, linking levels 34 and 35 within the hotel’s sky lobby. Guests will be escorted in a high-speed elevator from the hotel’s dedicated

entrance on St. Thomas Street to the sky lobby on level 35. Subtle Asian touches in the lobby and lobby lounge will reflect Shangri-La’s heritage, while modern and classic art with pieces from a mix of acclaimed Asian and British artists are showcased throughout public areas. The hotel’s 202 guestrooms and suites will open from levels 36 to 50 and are amongst the largest in London. Because of The Shard’s spiral shape, each of the spacious guestrooms and suites, which range from 30 to 188 square metres, is individual in layout and design. All feature floor to ceiling windows and unrivalled views across the city, marble-clad bathrooms with heated floors, separate bathtubs, Acqua di Parma amenities and mirrors with integrated television screens. Over a third of these bathrooms have city views. Deluxe, Premier and Grand Premier guestrooms and suites offer northerly views towards the City and London’s most famous landmarks. Superior guestrooms and suites feature far-reaching vistas over the vibrant areas of the south and towards the historic counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Some of the most stunning views are from the hotel’s three signature suites that will be unveiled in September. All signature suites overlook St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and down river towards the O2 Arena. The jewel in the crown is the Shangri-La Suite, situated on level 39, providing 180-degree views of London. >From the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben to the Tower of London, the view

“The hotel’s inspiring views will connect emotionally with guests, while our service hallmarks will position the hotel at the forefront of the world’s finest hotels.”
The hotel will feature three wining and dining venues. GŎNG, London’s highest bar on level 52, takes its name from ‘dougong’ – an ancient Chinese structural element of interlocking wooden brackets that will be a component of the bar’s interior. TĪNG, derived from the Chinese word for a living room, is the signature restaurant and lounge on level 35 and LÁNG – the Chinese word for ‘pathway’ – is an artisan deli on the ground floor. Level 52 will also be home to a 24-hour gym and London’s highest infinity pool, and along with GŎNG, level 52 will duly open from 1st July.
The hotel is now open for advance rooms, events, restaurant and lounge bookings, with opening room rates starting at £450 per room per night, including VAT.
Three river-facing event spaces on level 34 offer stunning views and state-of-the-art conferencing technology along with catering services. The largest of the venues, Ren, accommodates up to 140 guests; the other two, Yi and Li, can hold up to 10 and 35 guests, respectively. The grand staircase connecting levels 34 and 35, with its vista of St. Paul’s Cathedral and beyond, will be a picture-perfect location for wedding photography.
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s premier hotel companies, currently owns and/or manages more than 80 hotels under the Shangri-La brand with a room inventory of over 34,000. Over four decades the group has established its brand hallmark of ‘hospitality from the heart.’ The group has a substantial development pipeline with upcoming projects in mainland China, India, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
“We are thrilled to be opening our doors in May after a number of years of planning and preparation,” said Darren Gearing, executive vice president and hotel general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London.

Ladies’ Day Add a touch of elegance... Ladies’ Day is racing’s special day for the Ladies, a highlight of the summer social calendar, where all eyes will be on the most stylish women.

very racecourse is transformed into a sea of colour, with bright outfits topped off by the most flamboyant of hats. Thousands of women across the UK prepare weeks in advance, selecting their dresses, eye-catching hats and fascinators, and flock to the races with the action on the track of secondary importance to their stylish outfits. Ladies’ Day is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up, enjoy yourselves, mingle with celebrities, and hopefully get some winners if you are able to prise yourself away from the champagne bar. Girls deck themselves out as if they are off to lie back on a sun kissed Caribbean beach in the hot sun. Some ladies looking somewhat bronzed already! Ladies’ Day is a real fashion show with bubbly, and outshining the other girls to be the most glamorous. When dressing to impress, Ladies’ Day is one of the most difficult days of the year. It is Spring, but the weather is utterly unpredictable; it certainly won’t rain on the fashion parade! Heels have to be worn, tottering around on the grass; and there is the small matter of choosing the perfect frock to wow the judges in the Ladies’ Day competitions. As befits tradition, statement hats are the order of the day, with many race-goers keeping their most magnificent outfits for the occasion. Generally headpieces, hats or fascinators must be worn in the grandstand

The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014
T
SPONSORED BY BULGARI V&A MUSEUM, 5th APRIL – 27th JULY 2014
he V&A’s spring exhibition, The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014, will be the first major show to examine Italy’s rich and influential contribution to fashion from the end of the Second World War to the present. It will draw out the defining factors unique to the Italian fashion industry – the use of luxurious materials; expert textile production; specialist, regional manufacturing; and its strength as a source of both dynamic menswear and glamorous womenswear.
The Glamour of Italian Fashion will highlight the exceptional quality of techniques, materials and expertise for which Italy has become renowned. Its status as manufacturer and exporter of some of the world’s most stylish and well-made fashion and textiles is linked to the strength of its traditional industries including spinning, dyeing, weaving, cutting and stitching; some of these traditions have been practised in regions around Italy for hundreds of years. A digital map will visualise the networks of mills, workshops and the clusters of related industries seen across the Italian landscape.
The story of Italian fashion will be explored through the pivotal individuals and organisations that have contributed to its reputation for quality and style, within the prevailing social and political context. On display will be around 100 ensembles and accessories by leading Italian fashion houses including Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Gianfranco Ferré, Gucci, Missoni, Prada, Pucci and Versace, through to the next generation of talent including couture by Giambattista Valli, bold ready-to-wear from Fausto Puglisi and work from Valentino’s new designers duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. It will also highlight the creativity of influential but less remembered figures such as post-war couturiers Sorelle Fontana (Fontana sisters) and Mila Schön and design innovators such as Walter Albini.
The exhibition will consider how Italy’s fashion designers, manufacturers, press and related industries are navigating the current shift towards overseas production, fast-fashion, internet retail and digital communication. It will conclude with a series of filmed interviews with key protagonists across the design, manufacturing and media sectors discussing the challenges and trends that will impact on and shape the future of Italian fashion.
The exhibition will chart the shifting international perception of Italian style from the landmark ‘Sala Bianca’ catwalk shows held in Florence from the early 1950s, which propelled Italian fashion onto the world stage. Organised by Giovanni Battista Giorgini, these events presented the country’s finest designs, which offered a viable alternative to Paris. It will also examine the impact of the many Hollywood films that were shot on location in Italy during the 1950s and 1960s. During this period, stars like Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor became style ambassadors for Italian fashion, fuelling a keen international appetite for luxurious clothing made in Italy. 86 APRIL2014
Martin Roth, Director of the V&A said: “I am thrilled to be celebrating Italy’s immense contribution to the international fashion world in this first major exhibition on the subject. The V&A has a long tradition of working with Italian designers and this comprehensive exhibition will chronicle the development of the legendary Italian style, not only focusing on the familiar but, importantly casting light on the less well known designers and stories as well as considering the significant contribution made to the economy by its fashion and textile industries.” Tickets £12 (concessions available). The Fashion World of
From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk BARBICAN ART GALLERY, LONDON 9TH APRIL – 25TH AUGUST 2014 The first major exhibition devoted to Jean Paul Gaultier, the celebrated French couturier, opens at the Barbican in April 2014. This dynamic installation of more than 140 cutting-edge couture and ready-to-wear garments explores Gaultier’s fashion world, from his witty and boundarypushing designs to his ceaseless interest in society, identity and a beauty borne of difference.
T
he exhibition includes costumes for film and performance including iconic pieces such as the conical bra and corsets Madonna wore during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour, stage costumes designed for Kylie Minogue as well as pieces created for the films of Pedro Almodóvar and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element. The exhibition also features a wealth of photography by collaborators such as Miles Aldridge, Richard Avedon, David LaChapelle, Pierre et Gilles, Herb Ritts, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol, as well as footage of catwalk presentations, concerts, music videos, films, dance performances and Gaultier’s cult television show, Eurotrash. Jean Paul Gaultier said: “I am super excited that the show is coming to London for two reasons. The first reason is that I always want to go to London, because London, for me, is a special place. In England I’ve got so many souvenirs and I’ve had so many experiences and I must say that the English were the first ones to come to my shows and appreciate my fashion. If there is one place other than Paris that I should like to live in, it is London. I’ve got so many connections with London and feel at home there, even sometimes more than Paris. I like the spirit, the humour and little adventures that were funny, like Eurotrash. The second thing is the Barbican. It’s an honour for me because it’s a wonderful gallery and a wonderful place with extraordinary architecture and I think that showing my work there will be beautiful.” Designed as an installation rather than a conventional fashion retrospective, this theatrically staged exhibition presents pieces created between the early 1970s and now, many of which are being shown in Britain for the first time. Keenly interested in all the world’s cultures and countercultures, Gaultier has conceived a new kind of fashion in both the way it is made and worn. Through twists, transformations, transgressions and reinterpretations, he not only erases the boundaries between cultures but also the sexes, redefining the idea of androgyny or playing with subverting hyper-sexualized fashion codes. The Film World of Jean Paul Gaultier To complement the exhibition, the

Barbican presents a special film season curated by the celebrated French couturier. Jean Paul Gaultier’s selection includes films in which he worked as costume designer, from early titles such as Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989) to his extensive collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar in films such as Kika (1993), Bad Education (2004) and The Skin I Live In (2011). The season also includes films which have inspired and influenced Gaultier’s life and work, such as Elia Kazan’s A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), Jacques Becker’s Falbalas (1945), Robert Hamer’s Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Stephen Frears’ My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and Federico Fellini’s La Strada (1954) and Satyricon (1969). The programme will be crowned with a Screen Talk with Jean Paul Gaultier in Barbican Cinema 1 [date tba], when he will formally open the season. TOP 10 TIPS TO HELP YOUR KIDS EAT MORE HEALTHILY
I
n modern times we are becoming increasingly aware of the shortcomings of the foods we are feeding our children. Surveys show that children and teenagers are eating higher levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat than government guidelines recommend, and are failing to reach the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable portions. This means that they are potentially missing out on vital nutrients that contribute to optimum development. So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure their children develop healthy eating habits? Here are some tips to follow when considering your children and their nutrition: E at with your children. Children learn by example — make mealtimes enjoyable: set the table, discuss the day’s events, turn off the TV and put on some music or enjoy the silence. ‘Family’ eating not only promotes home-cooked meals, it also fosters a sense of routine and encourages social interaction — all of which lead to better eating habits later in life. M ake food fun! Experiment with new foods and make meals as colourful and as rich in variety as possible. We are naturally ‘turned on’ by diversity — so the more visually stimulating a meal appears, and the more textures it incorporates, the more likely your children will be to tuck in! I nclude two portions of vegetables in their evening meal, and provide fruit or a fruit-based pudding for dessert. This will help ensure that your children get three out of five servings of their recommended five-a-day at dinnertime E ncourage your children to drink water or sugar-free diluting juice between meals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration. I f you have a fussy eater in the household, don’t give up hope. Try serving the same foods in different forms — for example, people
94 APRIL2014
who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup. I nclude lean meat or another protein in every meal. This will help keep your children fuller for longer and will discourage snacking later in the day/evening. Red meat will also provide iron — which is particularly important for girls, who tend to eat less red meat of their own accord, yet whose iron needs increase as they begin menstruation. S erve oily fish twice a week (but no more). These are a rich source of omega oils, which can help keep heart and mind healthy; try salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils. Pack a healthy lunchbox. ‘Disguise’ vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit that’s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat. M ake sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins. Minerals to consider .. Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively. To ensure that children’s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Foods containing Vitamin C — such as orange juice — can also increase iron intake if drunk alongside iron-rich foods.

Energise yourself with Reiki
Today everyone is so busy and taken with wanting to achieve all that is possible within the shortest amount of time; we forget to actually take care of ourselves. Why not try booking yourself in for a Reiki Treatment; you might be surprised at the effects. BY LEVANAH REYES-WAINWRIGHT What is Reiki? Reiki pronounced Ray-key is a Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy. Reiki is an ancient healing system that can be experienced by either ‘hands on’ or by distance (remote) healing. A Reiki treatment encourages physical, mental and emotional healing and spiritual growth. This unique gift of healing is learned by a process of attunements. A person who has been attuned to Reiki has experienced a very ancient technology for fine tuning the physical and spiritual bodies to a higher vibrational level. The individuals energy centre’s (chakras) are also opened up to enable them to channel higher amounts of Reiki energy. Reiki is not a religion or a belief system because it holds no creed or doctrine. Reiki is designed to work whether you believe it or not. Reiki energy is drawn through the practitioner, and the recipient’s body will draw the energy to those parts of the body that require it. Simultaneously the practitioner is also treated whilst giving the treatment. Energy enters through the practitioner and passes out through the hands to the recipient. Reiki healing not only works on a physical level; it can relive pain but also promotes total relaxation and works to restore mental well-being and spiritual equilibrium. After being attuned an individual can also perform self healing, with daily self treatment to encourage the body’s natural healing abilities and reduce stress. The five Reiki Principles Just for today: I will not worry Remember that there is a divine and universal purpose in everything. Living each day to the best of your abilities is all that can be asked of anyone. To worry about the past or future is futile. Just for today: I will not anger Every situation is a mirror, a direct reflection of cause and effect created by ourselves. Those who cause anger in us are teaching us a lesson about ourselves. Witnessing your weaknesses gives you opportunity to grow. Just for today: I will respect my family, employers and friends Respect those around you for their wisdom and experience and show gratitude. Feel thankful for what you have received and trust it will always be provided.
Just for today: I will earn my living honestly If we are honest with ourselves then we project honesty to others, it then becomes easy to “do unto others as you would have others do unto you”. Just for today: I will show gratitude to every living thing. We must not try to control nature, but harmonise with nature and show love and respect for all life forms. By practising the five Reiki principles daily and using them continually they will become a habitual part of life and compliment your Reiki treatments. Your participation in your own life healing process is of paramount importance, in order to achieve the perfect balance you must give back for what you receive. What happens during a treatment? Treatments can vary from 30 – 45 minutes and prices vary according to practitioner as do types of Reiki, but the healing element is the same. You will be fully clothed and lying down on a bed akin to a massage. Reiki practitioners often practice ‘hands on’ healing on or around the head area and will channel energy through them to you. However, if you are uncomfortable being touched Reiki is still as effective with the practitioner placing their hands above the area about 6 inches away from the head or body. The practitioner should ask if you are comfortable for them to treat other areas of the body, such as feet, legs and stomach. The practitioner’s hands may be placed lightly over your eyes, sides and underside of your head and/or your neck depending on where they feel you need treatment. During a treatment some people experience nothing whereas others may experience feelings of hot cold, tingling and sometimes even light headed dizziness or seeing colours. However on the most part, people experience a feeling of well-being and deep relaxation. The practitioner should not suggest changes in medication or attempt to diagnose you with any conditions they think you may have. Most people have Reiki treatments, and may even be attuned to study Level 1 and 2 for everyday self treatment and care for family members and/or friends. If you want to move forward with Reiki as a hobby or profession you must do Level Three Master/Teacher.
A certified practitioner can be found via The Reiki Association http://www.reikiassociation.org.uk/ who apply rules, regulations and standards to treatments, as well as offering membership and practitioner insurance. 98 APRIL2014

“Sorry, I haven’t got time for lunch” “I’m working late again tonight” “I don’t have time for breakfast or I will miss my train” “There’s not enough hours in the day to fit in the gym as well”
o any of these sound familiar? Over the past few years, the London lifestyle and culture has become dangerously fast paced to keep up with economy and global demands. People are regularly working 12 hours a day, which often includes weekends. This doesn’t even take into account the commute into work and corporate entertainment after hours. Unfortunately, this lifestyle takes its toll on our bodies and health, resulting in bad diets, depleted sleep and not to mention alcohol consumption. For these reasons, Gary Ousby has developed Urban Conditioning, Gary Ousby has been a fitness consultant for over 20 years. He is qualified in sports science, sports psychology, sports nutrition, sports condition, yoga, pilates and much more. He has worked with people from all walks of life, from lawyers, actors, athletes, celebrities, to office workers and housewives. These experiences have given Gary a very collective and extensive understanding of various lifestyles and the challenges that come with that. Weight Control, Stress and Anxiety. These are probably the top three things Piers Day, The Sloane Square Hypnotherapist, sees in his clinic. We caught up with Piers to ask if they are connected in any way.
P
iers says: “I get asked this, and in most cases there is a direct link. People have anxiety or stress in their lives and 9 times out of 10 they develop either ‘I do not eat enough’ or ‘I eat too much’ - comfort eating. I see anorexics and bulimics as well as those wishing to lose weight - all are suffering from anxiety and stress inside at an unconscious and in some cases conscious level and use food to distract from their feelings. They try it, and food gives them temporary relief however as you know, the more you eat the larger you become!”
of your problems and release/remove them leaving you with a rebalanced mind/lifestyle where you are able to be healthy, happy and free from the old ‘distracting behaviour’.
Anxiety is much the same , people suffer with panic or live in a constant state of uneasiness and develop techniques to help them get through the day. Some of these techniques involve smoking, drugging, drinking or snapping (always angry/defensive). In much the same way, Piers uses his hypnotic Release and Rebalancing Therapy to restore normality in these people lives so that they are not dependant on prescribed drugs.
Piers Day, also helps with Stop Smoking in a one off, two hour session to turn you from a smoker to non smoker, or simply to remove the fear of Flying, Spiders and other such problems.
Piers has developed his Release and Rebalance Therapy where he is able to access your subconscious thoughts and fears but finding the root cause

DISCERNING TRANSFORMATIONS
I
by James Conci-Mitchell, Founder of SIX3NINE Personal Training Practice
n todays society it seems everybody is in a rush to get somewhere. With the development of smart phones and tablets it is not often that we are more than a few seconds away from a wealth of information. From a complex analysis of the current financial markets to the location of your favourite coffee shop, it takes no more than a moment to answer pretty much any question a person can think. At first glance this might seem wonderful, but as with most things, there is a cost. Much of the content presented to us via the internet is not necessarily what it seems. Opinion reigns supreme which can make fact difficult to discern from fiction. This combined with the fact that most websites are trying to sell you something creates a minefield of misinformation for the typical browser which can lead those with a genuine interest into some real trouble.
long results might take to achieve, and only in very rare cases is somebody in exactly the right place in their life to see a dramatic change over a short period of time, despite what many website might suggest. So you see, the discerning individual approaches health and fitness slowly and methodically. They integrate changes in a manner geared more towards sustainability and efficiency over short term aesthetic improvement. Recognised and ethical fitness professionals will be sought in order to provide the technical knowledge required, but the good ones wont promote an unrealistic time frame. The focus should always be learning how to enjoy safe and effective exercise, whilst getting creative with healthy nutrition. Most importantly all changes implemented must be permanent, after all, you are a product of your own lifestyle.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the fitness industry. Health and fitness websites continually bombard their audience with the latest miracle supplement or body transformation program. Spectacular pictures of overweight white collar professionals miraculously turned into chiseled Adonis’s are all too common, and promises are made that you too could achieve the body of your dreams if of course you’re willing to pay the price. Appeals are made to our emotions, scientific research is presented to back up claims and there is always some figure of perceived authority confidently endorsing the wonder product. Despite what is presented via these websites, and regardless of how desperately a person might want the results, deep down inside we all know the truth.
You can be sure those models used in the website ads didn’t build their chiseled abs using a magic wonder supplement, but rather by adopting and enjoying a healthy lifestyle over the long term. There really isn’t any replacement for hard work and discipline, so get learning how to make positive changes to your own lifestyle in a way that you can enjoy, and perhaps you will achieve that body of your dreams. Better yet, you might just keep it… At SIX3NINE Personal Training Practice, Covent Garden we take a no nonsense approach to training. We believe freedom of movement is the key to success for those wishing to improve their fitness. With this in mind we have created a bespoke area, free of traditional gym equipment, designed to allow our clients to move freely in as much space as possible.
There is no miracle solution A lot of factors are at play when looking at how quickly somebody can change their body shape. What is their training history? What is their current condition? How willing are they to change their diet? How much time can they commit? Even their genetic predisposition can play a big role in how they progress. All these aspects and more must be factored into the equation before even a rough inclination can be given as to how 106 APRIL2014
With demanding lifestyles, todays professionals can struggle to prioritise fitness and exercise in an effective regime. At SIX3NINE our hand-picked trainers ensure you are working out at the right intensity, in the safest manner and with the most effective exercises for your goals. Make an entrance! How to create a welcoming hallway E
The hallway is the first room guests see in a house. Make yours warm and welcoming with our inspirational design tips and advice…
ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of the wall, with statement wallpaper above. Feature flooring Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words. Let the light in Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you
108 APRIL2014
have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger. Storage solutions Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available. Make a feature Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point - while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

his second home collection by Jean Paul Gaultier explores the designer’s favourite themes with photographic landscape... crushed metal... angelic medallions... patchwork... images by French photographers Pierre & Gilles... fishnet... and of course la marinière stripes.
Astonishing fabrics including suedine, linen, cotton, silk and wool are transformed into cushions, ready-made curtains, throws, quilts and rugs... all beautifully adorned with crystals, delicately embroidered, framed in tulle, super-sized as patchwork, criss crossed with lace or daubed with metallic splashes. There are 4 themes to the accessories collection - Paysage, Angelots, Carrosserie and Dentelle. The Paysage accessories are based on the Vagabond heavy linen fabric which shows a soft focus photographic image of a landscape. There are ready-made curtains; two sizes of cushions plus Poesie, a small delicately embroidered cushion; a fine wool and silk throw and finally an all wool rug featuring the same tree silhouettes as the fabric. For the Angelots accessories, Gaultier has taken the classic idea of a toile de Jouy fabric and updated it with the medallions featuring angelic figures clothed in the famous marinière stripes. The curtains have striped borders at the top in either red or blue. Cushions have cameo-like cutouts of the figures with one design framed in tulle and the luscious Couple cushion is also embellished with Swarovski crystals. The Carrosserie accessories are in the Fangio and Le Male fabrics. With images of crushed metal transposed onto a soft suedine velvet or a metallic 110 APRIL2014

We take a close look at The Heritage Window Company and spend a day on site with them as they work their magic preserving the 1930s charm of a much loved home.
Original steel windows are delicately removed so as not to damage existing timber subframes which are to be reused.
The Heritage Experience... O
wners of 1930s style properties will often stay in the property for life as they provide space, tradition and many period features. One of those key features are the Windows. In many cases the originals will be slim line traditional steel windows which offer the period feature, however the negatives are the draughts, condensation and high energy bills which come as standard. When looking at replacement options, many are put off by the high cost of steel or the loss of aesthetic that tends to result from specifying UPVC. Therefore to provide the ideal solution is a cost-effective, energy efficient, slim line update. Since 1978, The Heritage Window Company has been installing its Benenden™ Range of slimline aluminium windows all over the south of England.
Best of Both Worlds The Benenden™’s ultra-slim aluminium frames afford maximum light transmission and mimic the minimalist sightlines of steel windows. They are fitted with the latest in argon-filled sealed double glazed low E units, so owners benefit from excellent heat retention and noise reduction characteristics without ruining the appearance of their home. As Heritage Managing Director Sean Ballard, points out “Many of our customers want to update their property with new Windows and in doing so, ensure they have all the benefits of modern Glazing technology, without compromise to completely losing that important ‘period look and feel to the property.” A range of matching traditional handles and pegstays enhance the period features and a multipoint locking system ensures that windows not only look good, but provide security as well. are cleverly designed to install into either direct to brick or direct to stone, or in the majority of cases into existing timber sub-frames. The aluminium frames are finished with a durable powder coated paint which is available with over 200 interior and external colours to compliment their chosen décor. See the New Conservation Range at Grand Designs Live In an exciting development, Heritage is launching its brand new Conservation Window at Grand Designs Live, London Excel, 3-11 May. The result of extensive consultation with conservation officers, the refined window features a minimalist 39mm section and a Polyamide thermal break – which means it is the slimmest aluminium window available with an “A” Window Rating and will meet current and beyond Building Regulations. This will cater for both replacement and new build projects. The company has built an enviable reputation for quality over the years. Benenden™ Windows are manufactured in the UK and installed by the firm’s directly employed fitters who work meticulously to minimize disruption. The company also has a team of surveyors who carry out pre- and postinstallation inspections to ensure every job satisfies its own exacting quality standards. The result is a long list of satisfied clients who are only too happy to refer other customers, and a growing collection of testimonials which can be viewed at any of its showrooms in Beaconsfield, Dorking or Sevenoaks. The Heritage Window Company Call 0208 695 0055 or email sales@thwc.co.uk www.thwc.co.uk
The wooden subframes are then scraped free of putty and paint, sanded, cleaned and any necessary repairs made
New aluminium frames are installed, drilled and screwed firmly into place.
Double glazed sealed units are inserted into the outer frame and fixed in place.
Coloured silicon mastic ensures the new units are draft-proof and coordinated with internal décor.
Finally, everything is checked and cleaned both inside and out for that extra sparkle!

For choosing the right bed this Summer
“A restful night of quality sleep is vital for good health. Give it the attention it deserves. Grumpiness, irritability, short temper and short term memory loss are all symptoms of sleep deprivation. If you want to work well, enjoy good relationships with your loved-ones and work colleagues then improve your sleep quality.” Brent Cooper, Marshall & Stewart bed expert

nd as we stomp into Spring and look forward to the Summer, Britain’s luxury bed expert Brent Cooper – MD of Marshall & Stewart and former Hästens sleep expert, shares his top tips for buying the right bed to provide quality, restorative sleep – every night.
1
A bed must be supportive but that does not mean it has to be hard. Hard beds are not good for you, but good support is crucial. Firm beds are for heavy people - the heavier a person is, the firmer the springs need to be. ize matters! Always buy the biggest bed your room will take – the S more space you have the less disturbed you are when your partner

moves. L ength is important – your bed should be at least 6” longer then you are tall. If possible opt for a bed with natural fillings, beds made from foam, latex and memory foam offer superb support but they struggle to regulate your body temperature, this can lead to disturbed sleep. Beds with natural fillings are best – horse hair, wool and cotton ventilate and cope with body moisture effectively, offering luxurious comfort. Slatted bases and storage divans are not as luxurious as a mattress and sprung divan. Don’t sacrifice aesthetics for good support; your sleep quality will be compromised.

Marshall & Stewart is a luxury British bed retailer based in two central London showrooms offering the finest collection of bespoke, handcrafted beds. The Diamond Bed Collection is made by experts using traditional craftsmanship and innovative designs to create beds which are sanctuaries for restorative sleep. Designed by Brent Cooper, each bed is handcrafted by layering the very finest natural materials and a progressive, intelligent spring system providing unparalleled comfort. “For decades the UK bed industry has been laying dormant, creating good beds but focusing solely on the support they provide. At Marshall & Stewart we look at things differently. A bed needs to be supportive, but it also must complement a person’s sleep cycle, only then can the bed induce excellent quality, restorative sleep. When this is achieved correctly, as it is with the Diamond Collection beds, a person will experience a kind of sleep beyond their wildest dreams. The industry needs to evolve, and we’re happy to be leading the way,” added Mr Cooper.
Marshall & Stewart understand that the third of a person’s life spent in bed is the foundation for the two thirds they spend awake. For this reason, every bed is made to the specific requirements of the client, taking into consideration size, weight and lifestyle. A complimentary in-store design service is provided for all clients enabling them to choose from an extensive selection of bed legs and fabrics. Clients and designers are also welcome to provide a fabric of their choosing which can be used on the divan and headboard ensuring the bed is bespoke to them.

Retro Style
First things first, decide on what theme or era you would like your home to be. Some fun ideas for different decades are the kitchy 50’s, the mod look of the 60’s, or the bohemiam look of the 70’s.
A
retro style usually has a fun, lively feel to it, with bright colours, wild designs and an overall sense of “flair”. Just think back to the fabrics and textures during the 60’s and you’ll immediately get a sense of where your decor needs to go to truly capture the essence of retro style. Because retro-style requires such a bold approach, it also requires a certain personality to pull it off. There’s nothing laid-back or casual about retro-style decorating. On the contrary, it is loud, busy and most definitely “funky”.
Music helped shape this decade as rock music mixed with disco fever, disco balls and disco dancing hit the groovy scene. Many 70’s homes were light, airy and free in reflection of the movements that were happening; activism, freedom and self-expression. There are many ways to integrate elements of 1970’s decor into your home without over doing it – there is the traditional retro style, or you may prefer for a more modern contemporary retro theme.
Trying to furnish your entire home strictly from a specific era can become quite tricky, so you could mix the old with new, and accessorise with items that complement the era you are looking to portray.
Get the 70’s look: Colour: Building your colour scheme around the hippie, ethnic style which would give you a more neutral palette of earth tones i.e. beige, sage green, sand, brown, mustard, burnt orange, navy, plum, aubergine, wine and deep shades of purple. Brown and cream with orange and avocado were the most popular colour choices of the seventies. Of course there is the disco vibe, additional colours of silver and gold that you could fuse into your design ideas.
So, how can you bring retro style decorating into your home? Let’s take a look at some common elements of this energising decorating style: Colors in Retro Decors One of the easiest ways to give a room a retro feel is to choose retro colours. Fortunately, that’s not hard to do. Avocado green is by far the most popular retro colour choice, followed closely by mustard yellow and combinations of black, white and red. In addition, purple and hot pink both make a great addition to your retro decor. Don’t be surprised to find items that have a little of everything, with mixes of bright orange, green, indigo blue, and yellow on one single piece. Tie-dyed fabrics, checkered patterns, and elaborate paisley prints were also a trademark of the era.
Walls: Look for a fabulous wallpaper which you could add to your room or use to make a stunning mural. Vinyl wallpaper was popular during the 70’s however today there are many incredible designs that are paper or fabric backed. Patterned fabrics also make great murals so enjoy looking through lots of ranges before you make your final selection. They are a real nostalgic look and could be used in a very modern way within your design.
Retro Style Furniture Retro style furniture has an abstract feel to it, with each piece almost fighting for the limelight as the focal point of the room. Sofas are broad and elongated with multi-colored throw pillows for an added dash of colour. Shiny chrome barstools with bright red seats draw your attention to a diner-style kitchen while Mitt chairs and puzzle-piece ottomans provide unique seating for guests.
Decor: Look for some tubular chrome or polished steel pieces of furniture to add to your look. Bean bags are also a great addition. Super comfy! Retro style interiors have lots of big pattern so mix and match fabrics i.e. upholstery to sofas, scatter cushions and curtains. It is daring to have lots of pattern in the one room however, you can combine them as long as you link in tones so that your design look tasteful.
The Seventies retro style interiors and design is considered very trendy these days. It is an exciting blend of hippie, beatnik, and boho chic with the funky kitsch designs from the sixties.
Lighting: Pendant lamps make a great retro centrepiece in the room, or you could go for dim retro lamps around the room, creates a relaxing mood in the room!

Tips for a great garden Nice gardens are very appealing. Many buyers cite a thoughtfully designed and well-kept garden as a major factor in their decision to buy a property.
W
ith so many television programmes, magazines and books devoted to gardening and outdoor design, house buyers are becoming more ambitious and more discerning when it comes to tracking down the garden of their dreams. Here are some hints for creating a perfect garden for your home. Choose a single theme or style. If you have acres of rolling grounds you can separate into different areas, otherwise you will need to pick one style and stick to that throughout. It’s no good trying to create a harmonious and peaceful Zen garden but then planting a riot of wildflowers in the middle of it. Trying to mix a formal English-style garden with naturalistic parkland won’t work. Nothing spoils a perfect garden like a hodgepodge of styles. Consider your desires and your constraints in order to fuel your creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention, so think about what you need from your garden (a space to entertain? A place to grow fruit and vegetables? somewhere for children to play?) and come up with a creative solution. It’s possible to create a formal-style garden but also be fairly self-sufficient. If your garden suffers from poor inner-city soil and too much shade, be inventive. It’s possible to produce an English-style layout, but with decorative edibles rather than flower beds. Cut back overhanging
122 APRIL2014
shade trees into neat borders and use raised beds to create an easy-to maintain, high-quality growing-areas. It’s the perfect blend of desire meets constraints. Plan your space, and your time carefully. A truly great garden is a well-planned garden... Draw out your garden in detail, making note of areas of shade and sun, damp and troublesome zones, areas of high traffic and sight lines. Use this plan to decide how you will use each part of the garden. Then decide what you’re going to plant and when. Different plants have different growing seasons and if you plan your calendar well you’ll have a constant symphony of flowers, fruit or vegetables as one comes into season as another dies back. You may have room for a swimming pool, or beautiful pond, so approach the experts in this case. Decide on the best garden furniture to suit your individual needs, based on whether you have decking or a sheltered space to entertain. With a little foresight and planning you can create a stylish and practical garden that will wow potential buyers.

JOHN BLY ANTIQUES
Regency Rebellion The first thirty years of the 19th century was the last period when a design style in interior décor, furniture and couture was identifiable as being exclusively for the wealthy classes as in every respect it was too outlandish, often too technically complicated and certainly too costly to manufacture for the masses.
T
his hedonistic style is called Regency and despite its allusion to the political situation from 1811 – 1820 in this context it actually covers those years from 1784 – 1830 and describes those styles favoured by George Prince of Wales during the time from his majority to his death. The taste encompasses extreme classicism in the Greaco-Roman and Egyptian, contemporary French and Oriental inspirations. However there would never have been such a strident departure from established good taste as associated with Sheraton, Hepplewhite and Robert Adam and favoured by ‘farmer’ George III had there not been such enmity between father and son, the King and the Prince. So when in 1784 the Prince was given Carlton House as his London residence he spurned the King’s architect, Sir William Chambers in favour of the Whig’s favourite Henry Holland, son-in-law to Capability Brown. After this, great names in among the cognoscenti published design and pattern books which today give us such precise details as to the dates when certain features
124 APRIL2014
first appear, then get altered and finally disappear. Thomas Hope, George Bullock and George Smith spring to mind and their designs and others, were put together in a compilation journal produced by Rudolph Ackerman which from 1809 – 1820 covered every aspect of fashionable life, like a mix of Interiors, Country Life and all the Life magazine editions from Fish Media put together. Studying these enables us to give accurate dating to the Sofa illustrated, in particular and in this case George Smith’s 1808 book ‘A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture’. Here can be seen the prototypes of gilt metal mounts which he features consistently in this edition but which become elaborated in his subsequent work of 1827, so around 1810 is the date. It is not difficult to imagine a young lady in the French antique classical based Empire Line dress reclining there upon, but it can still be used and enjoyed today…and an Empire Line dress is not compulsory. athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal. A stylish bath
CREATE A
LUXURY
OASIS
We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams.
The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. The shower option Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. An appealing basin Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. Little luxury touches Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

reathe new life into your home this Spring! For inspiration, come and see us at Neptune Home Fulham, now open on the Wandsworth Bridge Road. This stunning new showroom showcases the full range of Neptune products from hand made kitchens to contemporary classic dining, living, bedroom and bathroom furniture, as well as home accessories. The concept of Neptune is simple: to offer the finest quality furniture and outstanding design at a price that does not cost the earth. Neptune’s timeless kitchen designs, combine traditional craftsmanship with the latest technology. Hand made from solid wood utilising traditional joinery techniques, every cabinet is built upon a solid interlocking frame using mortice and tenon joints - no chipboard or MDF is ever used in a Neptune kitchen. And with an average kitchen costing just £15,000, it also represents outstanding value for money! The Chichester is the ideal choice for a country kitchen - a classic painted kitchen, designed to complement a traditional home. Hand painted in Limestone as standard, the kitchen is available in 27 alternative colours. For a painted finish, but with a more contemporary feel, the Suffolk fits the bill with its traditional Shaker-style clean lines. Hand painted in Dove Grey as standard, complementary dining furniture and dressers are also available.

For a modern rustic kitchen, the Henley is a contemporary take on oak. The organic curves, natural timber and authentic detailing transform this traditional kitchen into a celebration of modern design. Neptune’s bedroom collection features solid wood, hand-painted bedroom furniture, ranging from beds (with removable linen head boards enabling customers to easily change them to match the décor) to wardrobes, bedside tables, dressing tables and chests of drawers. For a Scandinavian feel, choose the Larsson bed with its pretty hand carved detail or for a more traditional look, opt for Chichester, painted in Old Chalk, and available with either a low or high footboard. Our solid wood bathroom cabinets not only look stylish, but provide essential storage space. Washstands are available in countertop and undermount versions. With a huge range of base and wall units available, it’s easy to create a bespoke-style bathroom without a designer price tag! The stylish garden furniture collection includes traditional teak, all-weather wicker, metal and stone, parasols and planters, designed to transform your outdoor living space. neptunefulham.com 87-93 Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham, London Tel: 0207 371 99 97

Summer days With lighter evenings at last upon us, our thoughts turn to warmer days ahead, and making the most of time spent with family and friends both indoors and out.
Home to property developer Edward Olley, his wife Alison, and their two children, this classic kitchen from Teddy Edwards combines British craftsmanship with all the practical necessities family life demands from the hardest working room in the house. “I wanted flexibility for different times of the year and different styles of entertaining ” says Alison. With outdoor living in mind, the key to kitchen planning is a sociable layout. The island provides Alison and Edward with a practical but sociable preparation area, maximising worktop space and giving all-round, easy access to work surfaces. The raised bar and seating area close to where food is being prepared allows them to chat easily to their children, help with homework or entertain friends. The position of the island makes the most of the garden views and brings the summer indoors. “I can also keep an eye on the children when they are playing outside” Alison adds.
