DRAWING TOGETHER: Members of the Society of Graphic Fine Art 18 March – 2 May, Watts Contemporary Gallery

rawing Together, opening at Watts Contemporary Gallery on 18 March, presents work by current members of the Society of Graphic Fine Art to demonstrate the diversity of drawing today. Recognised as the best artists in this field, the Society’s members work in a variety of styles and mediums, upholding the organisation’s founding commitment to show “pure draughtsmanship [as] an essential – if not the essential – factor of all true art.” Over 90 works (total) by 30 of the Society’s artists have been selected for this exhibition, many new and on show for the first time. These include portraits in pastel by Svetlana Cameron; fabric collages by Anne Carpenter, described by the artist as “drawing with scissors”; intricate observations of sea creatures by Lucy Clayton; 3-dimensional paper sculpture by Jackie Devereux and Louisa Crispin; colourful semiabstract block linocuts by Eric Gaskell; linear landscapes in Indian ink by Les Williams and

flamboyant floral paintings and mixed media creations by Angela Williams and Christine Hopkins. All works are for sale. During the exhibition, members of the Society of Graphic Fine Art will lead two Drawing Days and will mentor local students as part of a Season of Drawing at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village, which also features: an exhibition in the Historic Galleries of exquisite Pre-Raphaelite drawings from the Ashmolean Museum, brought together with drawings by G F Watts (1817-1904), to reveal a new side to these artists who painted many of the most recognisable paintings in the history of British Art (Pre-Raphaelite Treasures: Drawings and Watercolours from the Ashmolean Museum, 8 March – 12 June). The exhibition is supported by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund; two artists’ residencies, Phoebe Boswell and Sarah Thien (1 April – 31 May) and artist-led workshops and History of Art courses exploring the theme of drawing. Commenting, Les Williams, President of the Society of Graphic Fine Art (SGFA), said: “The SGFA is delighted to work in partnership with Watts Gallery for this exhibition. Often viewed as something of an establishment figure, a delve into RVW’s Surrey links soon reveals a genuinely democratic approach to music and a life devoted to his own maxim: ‘the composer must not shut himself up…. he must live with his fellows and make his art an expression of the whole life of the community.’ From writing music for village pageants and conducting amateur choirs in the Leith Hill Musical Festival, to organising war-time young artist performances in Dorking’s White Horse and criss-crossing the countryside to unearth traditional folk songs and carols, Vaughan Williams supported music-making in the county in the broadest possible way, and it is this legacy which the festival celebrates in 2022. Their programme includes guided walks and talks alongside concerts in beautiful locations across Surrey - from the magnificent Memorial Chapel at RVW’s former school, Charterhouse, to the picturesque village church in Coldharbour, to which he would walk as a young man to practise the organ; from the countryside around Box Hill home to George Meredith whose poem ‘The Lark Ascending’ inspired RVW’s famous work – to the stunning Garden Room at RHS Garden Wisley. miniature stable made by the artist Banksy and secretly added to a seaside model village attraction has sold at auction for £1 million. As part of his Great British Spraycation tour, the anonymous creator made the Merrivale Stable, which was slipped in to the Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth last summer. The model village owners decided to sell amid fears the piece could be stolen and sold it at auction on Thursday. Frank and Frances Newsome were delighted with the price fetched, with the money securing the future of the attraction.

Settling in to Boarding S

ince Cranleigh was founded in 1865 as a boys’ boarding school the obvious changes are that it has grown from one boarding house to eight with girls attending since the 1970s. We now have four boys and four girls houses, which are paired for house events and socials, providing a modern co-educational boarding experience. The dorms themselves have developed into more homely spaces with beds in threes and fours for the lower years and single rooms for the older pupils. Over the years, boarding has evolved into more of a home-school partnership to better fit contemporary family life and parents are often at the School to watch sports and performance or participate in events. The option to weekly board is very popular as it gives the opportunity to spend Saturday night and Sunday at home with family giving a great balance between school and home life. In September 2020 we introduced a Monday morning return for weekly boarders who wished to spend Sunday night at home too. Fourth formers and others new to house life often comment on the friendliness between pupils and especially between year groups. Each pupil has a dedicated Tutor looking after their academic and pastoral needs and our vertical tutor families allow Sixth Formers to support younger pupils with any difficulties they may face, with a team of house staff always on hand in case the new environment becomes overwhelming. We run a number of House events in the first part of term, including the ever popular House Performance where pupils throw themselves into working on a song and dance event with the older year groups. As our house staff are so integrated in the pupils’ school lives, they are able to ensure each pupil is happy and healthy. Matrons and the house staff communicate carefully with one another and

with teachers to ensure any signs of difficulties are highlighted, whether a child is quieter than usual or struggling with academic work. Homesickness can be a problem in the younger years, though it’s usually easily resolved in our busy, active environment and with plenty of ‘older siblings’ on hand to talk things through. he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Saatchi Gallery continue their partnership and will present the 2022 RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show this April. Following its success in 2021, the annual exhibition will return this Spring and showcase new work from leading botanical artists and photographers across three galleries. Entries for the show have been through a meticulous pre-selection process, where the scientific accuracy, technical skill and aesthetic appeal of the work is reviewed by an expert judging panel, with artists and photographers awarded RHS Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver and Bronze medals, as well as a series of special awards including ‘Best Botanical Art Exhibit’ and ‘Judge’s Special Award’. In 2022, a diverse range of subjects will be presented ranging from plants that have grown in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Tsunami to Rosulate Violas found at the height of the Andes Mountains. In addition, native British trees and hedgerow plants will complement illustrations of beautiful garden flowers. Anatomical drawings reveal the structure and form of some of our garden favourites, alongside explorations of the

9th-29th April 2022 ecological and economic significance of many familiar fruits and flowers. New photography entries include stereographic panoramas from various locations in the Hampshire New Forest and macro photography capturing the details of tiny Holly Parachute fungi. Flat lay photography of winter garden buds examines how different plants flourish, with multiple entries exploring rainbow themes across image series. Former Gold medal winning exhibitors will also show their work alongside artists participating in the 2022 exhibition for the first time. The show is a highlight in the calendar of the RHS Lindley Library, complementing its extensive collection of botanical artworks, photographs and illustrations which include more than 30,000 works. he nation is being urged to throw the biggest ever thank you party during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend. Celebrities Ross Kemp, Gary Lineker, Gareth Southgate, Levi Roots, Prue Leith, Alan Titchmarsh, Ellie Simmonds and Lorraine Kelly are among those backing the special Thank You Day on Sunday June 5. It is hoped millions will gather at street parties, host a Big Jubilee Lunch or get together around the county to thank the Queen for 70 years of service, but also to thank neighbours, family, friends, communities, the NHS and key workers for their support over the past year. Former EastEnders actor Kemp said: “Mainly it’s thank you to our Queen who has served for 70 years. “Her resilience has become our resilience. Her strength in times of trouble has become our strength. “Her sense of duty has been reflected in so many over the last two years. “It’s a big thank you to her, but it’s also a thank you, if you wish, to the staff at NHS, key workers,

HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS INTO STEM Danielle Desouza discovers how to inspire girls within the realms of science, technology, engineering and maths.

hen you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert. But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing. Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields…

Boost your daughter’s confidence Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.” Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop. org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a male student, and just as able to achieve success”, she says. It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.” “I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’” Reach out to organisations supporting women in STEM As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field – but there are plenty of networks that can help. Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry. You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists. Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re interested in. “I managed to get a week of work

experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”. Encourage curiosity from a young age Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.” Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.” Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists. If you think your child’s school should be offering more STEM-based activities, why not feed that back and see if you can cultivate change?

he Duchess of Cambridge has invited young viewers into her “bedtime story den” for a reading on CBeebies of a book she enjoyed as a little girl. Kate described the children’s classic The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark, by Jill Tomlinson, as an “encouraging tale” during her narration of the book to mark Children’s Mental Health Week. Illustrated by Belfast artist Paul Howard, the book tells the story of baby barn owl Plop, who is helped by others to grow in confidence and overcome his fears. At the beginning of Sunday night’s episode, the duchess says: “Hello, my name is Catherine and tonight we’re in my bedtime story den. “I’ve chosen a story which I remember reading as a little girl, it’s called The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark.” Illustrations from the storybook accompany the reading by Kate, who is wearing jeans and a Fair Isle jumper while sitting in a wooded area, with a hot chocolate within reach, two soft toy owls for company and a lit fire bowl. At the end of the reading, the duchess adds:

roundbreaking French designer Manfred Thierry Mugler died earlier this year aged 73. The news was announced on his Instagram page with a black square accompanied by the caption: “We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022. May his soul Rest In Peace.” Mugler launched his brand in the early 1970s, and became known for an architectural and experimental approach to fashion. On the runway, his silhouettes were always bold: waists were cinched, shoulders were exaggerated, and he favoured sheer panels and cut-outs to accentuate the female form. In recent years, Mugler’s popularity has seen a resurgence, thanks to celebrities such as Kim Kardashian West and Cardi B wearing designs from his archives. Mugler stepped down as creative director of his eponymous brand in the early Noughties, but later returned as creative adviser – and his signature style is still felt in the modern designs. Beyoncé and Diana Ross are just some of the famous faces who have paid tribute to the designer so far – and they join a long list of celebrities who have served some major Mugler moments on the red carpet…

Cardi B This will go down in history as one of Cardi B’s most impactful red carpet moments. abriella Crespi wasn’t your average Milanese muse. She was beautiful, yes, but she also had what other creatives like to call the eye: a way of looking at things and making them wonderful. It began with a series of objets d’art she made for her girlfriends in the late 1950s: small velveteen keepsakes that she embossed with snippets of poetry. Like so many great Crespi styles, they were initially supposed to be kept private. And yet when Christian Dior caught wind of them, he begged Crespi to sell them in his store in Paris, spotting the kind of everyday artistry that had been missing from the world of haute-couture. It’s a quality she would continue to cultivate in the years that followed. Whereas icons of decades past had favoured rigorous lines and austere dressing, Crespi wanted to design styles that were

lush, vital and alive. The ones we’re interested in today are known as the Bohemian ‘72 Collection. A compilation of louche, rattan loungers that promise to bring the warmth of the Tropics home. “[With Bohemia] I wanted to create a house of sun,” Crespi once declared, inspired by the easygoing garden rooms she found on her overseas adventures. To do so, she would have to abandon her usual mediums of brass and stone, reaching instead for something softer. She thought back to her many travels in Asia. The houses she encountered. And the way organic textures like rattan, straw and bamboo seemed to play with light. Mastering their many movements would prove challenging work. Each of the rattan palms had to be steamed to approximately 100 degrees, before

To the chagrin of the public, the collection was only ever made available to private clients at the time — largely due to the intense craftsmanship that went into each piece. o, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, what now? There are many decisions to be made along the way, attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. For anyone wanting to begin the process, here are the answers to key questions to help with the decision making: Are you interested in a stand alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home? This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the success of a project.
