ith summer in full swing the gardens at Painshill are looking stunning. The landscape was designed in the 18th century to delight the promenading visitor at every turn and it has been used in TV shows like Bridgerton and Vanity Fair. As you walk around the park amazing views unfold before you, striking buildings can be glimpsed through the trees and you discover incredible surprises like a vineyard, picturesque bridges and temples. One such surprise is the incredible Crystal Grotto. Hidden in an island on the lake, the man-made cave is a work of art. Over 10,000 crystals were placed on the ceiling by hand when the grotto was restored in the early 2010s. They sparkle and shimmer with light reflected by the lake. It is one of Surrey’s most spectacular pieces of culture heritage, as well as the perfect spot for an Instagram shot! A visit to Painshill makes for a wonderful family day out. So if you are looking to keep the children entertained over the holidays why not go on an adventure to find a magical Gothic Tower or spot different baby birds around the lake. Held from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September, the 12th annual Surrey Hills Wood Fair will take place at Fish Pond Copse in Cranleigh and is an exciting and educational day out for the whole family. series of never-before-seen images of the royal family taken by members of the public are going on show at Kensington Palace this week. Snapshots include a close-up of a smiling Duchess of Cambridge receiving a posy of flowers after the Sandringham Christmas service in 2014. Also on display is a black and white image of the Prince of Wales on horseback during a polo match in Oxford in the 1980s. The photographs form part of Historic Royal Palaces’ Life Through A Royal Lens exhibition, which also includes work by renowned photographers Norman Parkinson, Rankin, Annie Leibovitz and Cecil Beaton. Nearly 1,000 images were submitted following an appeal to the public to share their own memories of 20 AUGUST 2022

the royals in the Platinum Jubilee year. Those selected include the Queen smiling broadly despite the rain at the opening of The Lowry theatre and gallery complex in Salford in 2000. David from Leeds, who took the image, said: “It was pouring with rain and HM had just returned from Balmoral. “I asked if she had brought the Scottish weather with her. She chuckled and said at least the dogs seem to love it.”

An Artisan Distillery Based in the Surrey Countryside

ilent Pool Distillers is winning customers and awards for its commitment to producing exceptional handcrafted products including their signature Silent
Pool Gin. Silent Pool Gin, based on the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate, is inspired by the surroundings of the Surrey Hills using local botanicals to create a distinctive recipe. The distillery is located next to the estate’s historic silent pool, a lake fed from a deep, natural chalk aquifer that plays a vital role in the business and represents the very essence of the gin. The lake dates to the last ice age and the stunning azure crystal-clear water influenced the blue colour of the bottle while references to the medieval legend of the prince and the woodcutter’s daughter at the lake appear within the intricate bottle design. The recipe was created following over 600 iterations and after 18 months the distillers settled on a combination of 24 ingredients inspired by local flowers and plants such as rose, lavender and chamomile. The result is a very interesting, layered gin of subtle layers which allow people to pick up different flavour notes, including cardamom,

coriander, and chamomile. For ‘mouthfeel’ it also features honey from hives in the biodynamic vineyard next door. As well as this best-selling spirit, Silent Pool Distillery produces a rare citrus gin, created with the help of a leading authority on citrus; a range of handcrafted small-batch spirits; and the ecofriendly Green Man Wildwood Gin. he Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. 20 top scoring artists come together for an exhibition and a programme of events at the New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, including different materials and techniques such as painting, glass, textiles, ceramics, collage / assemblage book and paper art. aguar Classic has completed building the first C-type Continuation. The strictly limited production run is well underway at Jaguar’s Classic Works, Coventry, and the first vehicle has finished shakedown testing ready for delivery to an excited customer. Each C-type Continuation undergoes at least 250 miles of physical testing by Jaguar Classic engineers, following a build process that requires 3,000 hours of intensive and highly skilled craft. The first customer Continuation is finished in Pastel Green with Suede Green leather seats and is inspired by the original Jaguar C-type which won the 224-mile long, 50-lap sports car race at the Reims Grand Prix Meeting on 29 June 1952. This vehicle was the first C-type fitted with disc brakes to win in international competition. It was after driver Stirling Moss persuaded Jaguar to implement the pioneering technology it had in development. The victory at Reims was a glimpse to the C-type’s dominance at the following year’s Le Mans 24 Hour, and Jaguar’s continued supremacy in 1950’s sports car racing. All C-type Continuation models will be built to the specification of the 1953 Works C-types. The Jaguar Classic team has helped bring Jaguar’s heritage to life using extensive research, modern technology and engineering expertise. With advanced CAD modelling, each one is then crafted using the same build methods and techniques to ensure the limited-run Continuations honour the delineation of the original C-type.
Customers have 12 exterior heritage colours to choose from including the Pastel Green of this car, British Racing Green and Pastel Blue with contrasting roundel, as well as the opportunity to select their own interior specification from a range of eight leather hues. The Continuation models are FIA-approved and eligible to participate in all FIA Historic events, including the Jaguar Classic Challenge, which takes place at a variety of different racetracks including Le Mans and Silverstone. The limited run of C-type Continuations is available now.

ll eyes have been on the tennis, as Wimbledon marked a triumphant return to full crowds. And yet we’ve also been keeping a close look at the stands, which were typically full of celebrities keen to show off their fanciest tennis-appropriate outfits… While the all-white dress code only applies to the tennis players, some celebrities have used it as inspiration for their courtside looks. Sienna Miller gave her signature Noughties Boho style a 2022 update, wearing a white lacy dress given an edge with a chunky black belt and snakeskin shoes. Lashana Lynch also got in on the all-white action, while drawing upon another big trend of the season: crochet. Wearing Ralph Lauren, 56 AUGUST 2022

Some celebs are such big tennis fans, they aren’t content with going to Wimbledon just once – and this year, Vogue editor Anna Wintour was one of those people. This look is peak Wintour, with a long embroidered coat and her signature shades. Wintour’s outfit for her second appearance was a bit more unexpected, with a brown leather jacket giving her look more of an edge – but the trusty big sunglasses remained. Tom Daley brought a bit of sartorial sunshine to Wimbledon this year, watching the tennis with his husband Dustin Lance Black in a bright yellow suit paired with a pale pink tie. Ashley Roberts amped up the sex appeal for the tennis, wearing a silky beige minidress with an asymmetric cowl neckline and interesting cut-out.

ith the chance to jet off overseas restriction free the summer holiday season is back in full swing. With recent soaring temperatures getting outside more often means a wonderful opportunity to top up our vitamin D. With more time outdoors, which can give your skin a sun-kissed glow, it is very important to not forget about sun protection. As summer heats up, I advise my patients about the vital need for sunscreen, along with wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. However, sunscreen is not only for the warmer months. Whilst a high SPF is important during the summer (at least factor 30, preferably 50), our skin does benefits from continuous UV protection all year-round. I find a good sunscreen to be one which is oil-free as high factor sunscreens can often feel heavy and greasy. Oil-free options tend to work well especially under makeup. I also prefer mineral sunscreens as they create a physical barrier which is better for the skin. With SPF as a staple of summer skincare, what else might we add to our skincare routine in the summer while staying nearer to home? During the summer months controlling oil and cleansing the skin is more important, but more often the issues come when people overdo it and make the problem of oily skin worse. As 62 AUGUST 2022

the weather becomes warmer, we sweat a little more and naturally most of us think that more cleansing will help to combat this effect. What we do not want to do however is strip away the skin’s natural oils as the skin will simply compensate by producing even more. So, when it comes to cleansing just a little adjustment is needed. What is important is to build skin health that is consistent throughout the year rather than interrupting the skin’s natural processes. Moisturising is more complex for those who suffer with dry skin. Through winter the low humidity, warmer showers and drying effects of indoor central heating can take their toll. Those who switch in winter to a thicker moisturiser should dial back to something lighter for the summer months. And remember, moisturise before you apply SPF, making sure you reapply your SPF throughout the day, ideally every 2 hours especially if you are swimming for example. I often recommend adding in a vitamin C serum to your routine, as it not only works as an antioxidant but will also help to combat some of the pigmentation that many often develop from more intense sun exposure. A great choice when on holiday is a noncomedogenic tinted sunscreen as an alternative to your usual foundation, making it easier to reapply regularly. Do not forget also that while products can help your skin it is important to stay well hydrated and avoid being out in the sun during the middle of the day when UV rays are strongest. Get the Look: JAPANDI TREND
Sam Wylie-Harris talks to an interior design expert about how to work the Japandi trend in your home.
J
apandi décor style is one of the most popular interior trends right now – racking up no less than 56.5 million mentions across Instagram and TikTok, according to industrial-inspired home accessories and lighting brand, Industville. Not yet familiar? As the term suggests, Japandi is a mix of Japanese and Scandi style – a combination with endless appeal. “While geographically, Japan and Scandinavia may be worlds apart, when it comes to design, the two countries are synonymous with creating interiors rooted in simplicity, comfort, neutral colours and natural materials,” says Alysha Alli, who heads up the interior design team at Redrow homebuilders. “Together, the two cultures have led to the recent creation of the now universally loved interior trend, Japandi.” Illustrating a beautiful marriage of East meets West, where Scandinavian’s cosiness blends seamlessly with Japan’s minimalism, Alli says Japandi style is growing in popularity with homeowners of all ages throughout the UK.

“While the trend has been around since 2016, its popularity grew throughout the pandemic, and still has an enduring effect,” Alli explains. “Homeowners continue to create a functional yet welcoming interior that’s perfectly suited to a healthy balance of work and home life.” Scandinavian homes, she says, tend to prioritise comfortable interiors that are warm and inviting and deeply rooted in the countries’ concept of ‘hygge’ (cosiness), while Japanese design adopts the countries’ ‘wabi-sabi’ philosophy, which originates from Zen Buddhism. “The term refers to embracing imperfections and finding beauty in the natural, unpolished world,” notes Alli. “This fusion of two cultural beliefs has today created a design that’s loved for its welcoming and warm minimalist aesthetic.”
HOW CAN YOU GET THE JAPANDI LOOK? Neutral colour palette “Earthy tones and muted colours are key to recreating the Japandi look,” says Alli. “Sage and

muted greens, paired with watered-down greys, pale ochres, beiges and sandy tones should be top of your Japandi colour palette.” Scandi interiors can often favour clear whites, but Alli recommends replacing this with a light stone, beige or fawn tone, to avoid your interior feeling more Nordic than Japandi. “While Nordic design favours lighter colours, Japanese interiors can often appear more daring by introducing richer colours through design accessories. For a truly Japandi look, take note from Japan’s approach to colour by adding a contrasting colour to your neutral palette, such as pale pink or charcoal grey, either through soft furnishings such as cushion covers or throws, artwork or lighting,” she suggests. These small colour additions will add a richness to your interior that stops the room from feeling muted and restricted to similar colours, she explains. “A key thing to remember is that Japandi interiors should always blend harmoniously together, where every item is given equal attention,” says Alli. “So any contrasting colours should not stray too far from your neutral palette, but rather as a pop of colour.”
Sustainable furnishings “Both Japanese and Scandinavia interiors use wood as their dominate interior material – but do so in very different ways,” observes Alli. “Scandinavian-influenced interiors favour a rustic approach, where the wood is often left pale and untreated. Whereas in Japanese-inspired interiors, the wood is more likely to be stained and 98 AUGUST 2022

darker, creating a much richer effect.” Don’t be afraid of opting for both, she says. Although the wood may be different, the natural colours remain in the same palette, so will still create that desired harmonious effect, while adding a little intrigue to the room that’s rich in an artisan feel. “Other authentic, natural materials, such as bamboo, rattan, cotton or hemp, offer an easy way to introduce texture and a natural element into your interior,” Alli adds. She says eco-friendly materials are perfect in the bedroom too, which should be rich in nature and free of tech for a good night’s sleep. “And perfect for introducing that unpolished look synonymous with ‘wabi-sabi’,” Alli notes. “Assorted warm metals also work beautifully with these natural materials and provide a contrast in texture.” Where both Scandi and Japanese interiors share a love of nature and house plants, as Alli points out, Japandi interior leans towards fewer but bigger plants, where the larger plant is used as a focal point in the room. “Other ways to bring the outdoors in can be through adding branches to large ceramics for a vase vignette, which offer a sustainable homemade accessory.”
Minimalist cosiness To ensure you strike the balance between Japan’s minimalism and Scandi’s cosiness, Alli says: “Adopting a minimalist approach by decluttering will allow your home’s architectural features and clean lines to shine. “Decluttering is an easy way to create the illusion of a minimalist interior – and can quickly transform forgotten or previously hidden elements, such as antique statement vases or ornaments, into focal pieces,” she adds. Use the lines of your shelves or bookcases themselves as a decoration, she suggests; don’t obscure them with trailing plants or soft furnishings. “The overall look should be one of continuity – blending shapes and sleek functionality – that remains rich in personality through your ornaments or books.”
