Joyful Reflections
he United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution declaring the year 2022 as the International Year of Glass to celebrate the heritage and importance of this material in our lives. To celebrate this, the New Ashgate Gallery is delighted to present two art glass exhibitions this year. This exhibition is collaboration with the Contemporary Glass Society to present Joyful Reflections. The exhibition features 15 exceptional makers working in a variety of diverse glass techniques. The Contemporary Glass Society is the leading organisation representing national and international glass artists, designers, and makers. With over 1,000 members, the society champions the work of independent makers through a variety of initiatives
including business development opportunities and exhibitions at leading galleries all over the UK. On their 50th anniversary, we are also delighted to announce that The Crafts Council has selected the New Ashgate Gallery and the Joyful Reflections exhibition as a Make! Craft Live! partner. In Joyful Reflections, the artists step back from the sadness of the pandemic and to embrace the joy of life as we know it now. Vibrant colours and transparent forms reflect the joyful moments we have come to appreciate in everyday life. Nicola Lightfoot, the Curator of Glass, New Ashgate Gallery says: The exhibition will highlight the luminous, reflective, and often illusional qualities of glass, and will celebrate its unique ability to express fragility, rigidity, pattern and form. The Gothic Tower is situated in the evergreen woodland and was designed as a romantic castle that peeks around the trees and guides you on to discover more. Between Saturday, April 2 and Tuesday, April 19 visitors can climb the spiral staircase to the top, admire the Gothic architecture and take in the view. Over the school holidays, there is also a pop-up café inside which will be serving hot drinks and snacks. Whilst you are there, make sure that you don’t miss another of the landscape’s beautiful features; the famous Crystal Grotto. The sparkling cave sits on an island in the serpentine lake and is the perfect spot for stunning photographs. Light from the lake reflects across the crystal ceiling, creating a magical atmosphere that has delighted people since the 18th century. Easter is coming Easter is coming, and so are the Easter Eggs! Which one will you choose this year? We went along to visit Chris Bachmann at his multi award winning Weybridge Patisserie in the search of the perfect egg. We asked him, “What makes a Bachmanns Egg so special?”
“A
ll our Easter Eggs and Bunnies are handmade with love on the premises. There are a few reasons why I think that our Easter products are the best in the UK. First, we use one of the finest couvertures in the world, sourced from a small manufacturer in Switzerland. It not only eats well on its own, but marries perfectly with other flavours. Not only is the chocolate perfectly tempered and therefore beautifully shiny, but unlike factory made products, the chocolate is poured into the moulds, allowed to set, and then another molten layer of chocolate is added. When this layer sets, it creates a tension or fault line between the layers, which improves the “snap” of the chocolate when eaten. Last, we also hand sculpt our eggs, adding a final exterior textured layer, and by adding chocolate flowers and hand made buttons, each egg becomes an individual work of chocolate art. It is the repeated lamination that makes the eggs break up delicately before melting in the mouth, and that is what truly sets them apart. However, this takes a lot of skill, and we have a great team here under Wayne Harris our head Chef, and our choclatier Dan Ellis. Filled with either our legendary fresh cream truffles, or packed and encrusted with Crunchy Almond Rochers (baton almonds, macerated in cointreau, toasted with icing sugar over a hot flame, and mixed with melted chocolate and cocoa butter) our Eggs make an exquisite and unique gift for that special someone. We only make and stock our eggs for the three weeks between Mothers Day and Easter- that way we can pack them so that the products are super fresh and tasting their best- you know they haven’t been sitting around on a shelf in a warehouse for months and months. “In fact, a couple of Easters ago, one lucky lady opened her Bachmanns egg to find a diamond and platinum engagement nestling inside. Bachmanns were asked to pack the ring in its box into a truffle filled 800g dark chocolate egg so the suitor could propose in style on Easter day. “I must admit, I was quite relieved to get the ring and the egg back to the owner- it was a gorgeous piece of jewellery and I imagine it was extremely expensive. It was quite a compliment that we were trusted to look after it. I am delighted to say that we got a thank you letter from him and his new fiancé the week later”

The Ritz London’s Executive Chef, John Williams MBE, and Head Pastry Chef, Lewis Wilson, have applied the highest level of technical expertise to create two distinct chocolate Fabergé eggs, each paying tribute to the exquisite artistry symbolised in both Fabergé’s current collection as well as its historical masterpieces. Throughout Easter week, a four-course Fabergé menu will be available in the Michelin-starred Ritz Restaurant, inclusive of a hand-crafted chocolate Fabergé egg dessert. Inspired by the Essence Rose Gold Ruby Heart Surprise Locket from Fabergé’s current collection, which features an 18k rose gold egg opening to reveal a ruby heart surprise hidden inside, the delicate egg dessert consists of an intricate dark chocolate spherical cage, which opens up (closely mirroring the Fabergé egg) to reveal a gold, dark chocolate egg within, filled with a hazelnut and chocolate mousse centre. The egg sits delicately on a ruby red tuille and is decorated
with edible ruby red gemstones. The dessert is served with vanilla ice-cream to complement. An elaborate chocolate Fabergé Egg sculpture has also been created by The Ritz London and will be on display at the hotel throughout Easter week, paying tribute to Peter Carl Fabergé’s iconic 1901 Imperial Basket of Flowers Egg, one of the most technically sophisticated and extraordinary of all the Fabergé Imperial Easter Eggs, and one which resides in the Royal Collection Trust today.

he Berkeley’s Prêt-à-Portea celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of the ultimate fashionista serving up three special creations, each representing one of Her Majesty’s most iconic fashion signatures. First, one of the Queen’s most summery hats has been crafted with lime cheesecake, fresh lemon compote and almond sponge. This is finished with a flowery garnish. British label Launer London has long been Her Majesty’s handbag brand of choice. Here, The Berkeley pastry team pay homage with a blueberry Victoria sponge iced with mirroir glaze, sandwiched with ivoire chocolate. Finally, perhaps the most famous regal accessory – the crown - which has been created in vanilla biscuit and iced with burgundy, red and white (aptly named) royal icing. A mocktail or cocktail offering will pay homage to the Queen. ‘Superbloom’ (named after the flower installation taking place at the Tower of London for the Jubilee) is a blend of non-alcoholic gin and earl grey tea (nodding to the Queen’s favourite tipples) with sweet violette bitters, rhubarb and raspberry tonic. For those who want to make it a little stronger, the tonic will make way for Laurent Perrier Rosé. Sandwiches will include Roast Norfolk chicken with coronation dressing on rye bread. Served 1pm - 5.30pm between Monday 30th May – Sunday 12th June 2022 from £79 per person.

A discreet rosewood-clad hallway displaying one-of-a-kind vintages of wines and champagnes from Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée Conti to Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises – drawn from The Connaught’s extensive wine cellar , Leads guests down to the Grill room. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten pays homage to classic grill dining, but with his own signature twists of modernity, and using ingredients with the finest provenance. For truly the best of British comfort, a ‘Pie of the Day’ menu celebrates traditional favourites such as venison, chicken, seabass en croute and shepherd’s pie. A traditional Sunday roast is presented and carved on the restored silver trolley from the original Connaught Grill, wild seabass en croute is a ceremonious pastry-enrobed showstopper, carved tableside in true old-school Connaught style, and a knife menu is presented alongside meat and fish, harking back to service moments of yesteryear. Ensuring balance, light and vegetarian dishes
include roasted and grilled aubergine topped with grilled goat’s cheese and pomegranate, chilled raw Scottish langoustines served in the shell, and spit-roasted celeriac with lemon puree, pecans and Pecorino. Traditional British favourites also appear on the dessert menu, overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Nicolas Rouzaud, including sticky toffee pudding served with butterscotch sauce and coffee ice cream, chocolate soufflé topped with ice cream and bread and butter pudding served with spiced pear and cinnamon milk sorbet. The 46-seat restaurant is a showcase of contemporary creativity and craftsmanship, designed to continue the Connaught legacy for years to come. The open kitchen in The Connaught Grill allows guests to see chefs cook on a theatrical wood-burning grill and rotisserie. New tax year, new divorce rules
O
ne of the biggest changes in family law will come into effect on 6 April this year. This is the new regime of “no fault” divorce, something family law professionals have been campaigning for, for a very long time. There is only one ground for divorce, which is that a marriage has irretrievably broken down. However, currently, this needs to be supported by one of five facts, these being that the other person has committed adultery and the petitioner (the person applying for the divorce) finds it intolerable to live with them, that the other person has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with them, that the petitioner has been deserted (this is rarely used and is very difficult to prove), that the parties have lived apart for a continuous period of two years and the other party consents to the divorce or that the parties have been separated for a continuous period of five years. As can be seen, quite a minefield to get through. The difficulty with the current divorce law means that even if a couple have decided to divorce amicably, and just want to move on swiftly, if neither adultery or behaviour apply, they will still

have to wait for a minimum of two years. Even if adultery and behaviour do apply, by their very nature, they are acrimonious and liable to “raise the temperature” before any discussions regarding a financial settlement have even started. The new divorce law which takes effect from 6 April this year, does away with the five supporting facts, and couples will be able to divorce on the basis of the marriage having irretrievably broken down. They will not need to “prove” this. It is envisaged that this will greatly smooth the way for amicable discussions regarding child arrangements and/or a financial settlement. ffering an extensive intellectual programme is key to the development of students as rounded and accomplished individuals. At Hurst College, students of all ages can access a wide range of activities including talks with visiting speakers, trips to broaden their subject knowledge, clubs to encourage their interests, and higher up the school tailored support with their chosen university course. Last year a new society was launched, Model United Nations (MUN) - a simulation of the real United Nations organisation. Students take on the representation of a country as they work with one

another to debate the diplomatic issues of the day. In preparation for their first conference, in which they won five awards, Hurst’s MUN team visited several international embassies to meet with their diplomatic teams. CREST and STEM activity continues to thrive, as a record number of students achieved CREST Awards. The awards followed eight months and 70 hours work on a diverse range of science and engineering projects – including the first Biology-based project, on cryogenics. The Hurst Engineering Scheme was launched last year with sponsorship secured for a record three teams – two by Balfour Beatty and one by Southern Water. The winning team’s project was to improve connectivity between two towns through the design of a ‘green’ cycle network using e-bikes with a community hub and app. Hurst has a successful track record with Young Enterprise, winning awards at county and regional level. Each year the teams create new products, design bespoke websites and build comprehensive brands which always produce a profit. Last year, the Plants with Purpose YE team also made the final of the JA competition, the European version of YE, as one of only five UK teams selected to participate. Lower Sixth students can attend regular small group sessions with a member of the teaching staff, to prepare them for completing a competitive application to a highly selective university. Students are matched with the appropriate subject specialist, and take part in sessions which include recommendations for extra reading and more challenging content from beyond the curriculum, preparing entries to essay and other competitions; preparing talks to deliver to peers. Students who are considering Oxbridge, STEM degrees, Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry are given further support through tailored workshops and interview practice specific to their applications. Hurst also organises visits to Oxford and Cambridge to meet former students who are already studying there. Settling in to Boarding S
ince Cranleigh was founded in 1865 as a boys’ boarding school the obvious changes are that it has grown from one boarding house to eight with girls attending since the 1970s. We now have four boys and four girls houses, which are paired for house events and socials, providing a modern co-educational boarding experience. The dorms themselves have developed into more homely spaces with beds in threes and fours for the lower years and single rooms for the older pupils. Over the years, boarding has evolved into more of a home-school partnership to better fit contemporary family life and parents are often at the School to watch sports and performance or participate in events. The option to weekly board is very popular as it gives the opportunity to spend Saturday night and Sunday at home with family giving a great balance between school and home life. In September 2020 we introduced a Monday morning return for weekly boarders who wished to spend Sunday night at home too. Fourth formers and others new to house life often comment on the friendliness between pupils and especially between year groups. Each pupil has a dedicated Tutor looking after their academic and pastoral needs and our vertical tutor families allow Sixth Formers to support younger pupils with any difficulties they may face, with a team of house staff always on hand in case the new environment becomes overwhelming. We run a number of House events in the first part of term, including the ever popular House Performance where pupils throw themselves into working on a song and dance event with the older year groups. As our house staff are so integrated in the pupils’ school lives, they are able to ensure each pupil is happy and healthy. Matrons and the house staff communicate carefully with one another and

with teachers to ensure any signs of difficulties are highlighted, whether a child is quieter than usual or struggling with academic work. Language learning: A gift that keeps on giving
L
earning a new language can be such a daunting task especially when there is no particular motivation to learn. Many times, well meant new year resolutions to learn a new language tend to fall by the wayside once the first signs frustration appear. At Pepe and Tete, we have found that a typical language learning journey for a beginner will involve three stages. First the ‘picking up stage’ i.e. the ability to pick up the new concepts and pronunciations. Next comes the ‘retaining stage’ i.e. when a student starts to memorise the concepts more frequently than not. Finally, the ‘expressive stage’ i.e. when the student develops the confidence to express themselves in the new language. Normally, this comes from being understood despite articulating phrases at a low level of accuracy. The magic word is practice. That is why our learning approach is founded on conversation as the best way to learn a language. Whether it’s practicing with native speakers or role-plays, our tutors place strong emphasis on social skills as a way of mastering a language across all ages and levels. Specifically, for children, we have developed a learning model that uses Pepito, a fun and engaging character to bring to life various aspects of Spanish culture such as family, food and hobbies. For adults, we use a dedicated one-year programme called Spanish Año. The programme is based on an English family looking to relocate to Spain and thus puts strong emphasis on conversation and practice as a way of mastering

Focus on your fitness goals before designing a gym. “I often hear clients talking about getting fit. But as a sports science graduate and former personal trainer, I try to get a deeper understanding. By focusing on what you’d like to achieve – whether toning up, building muscle or strength, improving cardio fitness, or enjoying the benefit of all-round health and fitness later in life allowing you to stay active with your family – I can then design a gym that’s going to meet your particular needs” says Mick. “I often see home gyms that are full of equipment that isn’t being used because this discussion about fitness goals hasn’t taken place” he adds. He suggests that thinking about these goals and talking them through with an expert gym designer will always ensure that your gym is working within your budget and that you’re using the available space for maximum benefit as well as being a place that looks and feels so good that you WANT to go back to all the time! Typically, he would recommend considering the following: • Improve Your Running Time/Technique: An indoor treadmill is a great option allowing you to create and track specific structured programs that will accelerate your progress rather than just randomly ‘going out for a run’. It also means you can run whatever the weather. Supplement this with some lower body strengthening work with Free Weights will help you take the impact off the joints as well as give a spring to your stride. Integrating foam rollers and massage balls withing your stretching routine can also help with your running technique as it helps re-align your body and make it move more efficiently. • Tone up: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a great all-rounder for this, firming
up your muscles whilst burning your body fat. However, be careful with jumping exercises as although they burn calories and fat they can also wreck your joints, especially as you get older. Supplementing with resistance exercise offers continual muscle tension throughout the range of movement will help turn your muscles into effective shock absorbers. A combination of cardio and functional equipment such as a Treadmill or Spin Bike along with Core Bags, Kettlebells, Medicine Balls and Dumbbells would be one good solution. • Build Strength/Muscle: You will need a greater strength element to your gym, so a set of Dumbbells and a Bench may not be enough. Allowing space for an Olympic Barbell and Plates and a Rack to use them with gives you a lot of muscle-building and strength options. • Sports-Specific: Functional equipment will really help you with any sport including golf, tennis, cricket, hockey, football and rugby. Free Weights, Medicine Balls and Kettlebells are a good start but Cable Machines offer a greater range of power as the resistance tends to stay be similar through the entire range of movement. A quality dual adjustable cable machine will also allow you to train in similar or complimentary movements and can make a big difference to your sporting performance as well as minimising injuries. he Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated St Patrick’s Day with the Irish Guards, but it was an officer’s young daughter who stole the show with her antics. Kate was fittingly dressed in an emerald green outfit for the couple’s visit to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for the St Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks in Aldershot in Hampshire. William is Colonel of the Irish Guards and the event was the first time the Cambridges have been able to celebrate the annual event with the officers and soldiers from the regiment since the pandemic began. During the ceremony, 20-month-old Gaia Money grabbed two bouquets from the duchess and a smiling Kate said: “Shall we swap. Now you have both of them.” When Gaia’s father, Lieutenant Colonel Rob Money, placed his bearskin hat over his daughter’s head, Kate said: “That’s so sweet. Do you fit inside it.”

The toddler’s mother Lorraine Money said afterwards: “The duchess was lovely. Gaia took both bouquets and she let her keep them. Gaia has been practising her curtsey at nursery school but failed! “I am from Jamaica and we spoke about Jamaica, as they are going there next week.” The duchess, wearing a green coat by Laura Green and hat by Lock & Co, pinned a sprig of shamrock on the Irish Guards mascot – a twoyear-old Irish Wolfhound. The dog, called Turlough Mor, also known as Seamus, and handler Drummer Adam Walsh, stood to attention on the parade ground. Kate wore shamrock on her jacket and William, dressed in a military coat, had a sprig on his cap for the couple’s visit. The duchess handed baskets filled with shamrock sprigs to regimental leaders to hand out to the ranks and she chatted and smiled as she presented officers with the plant – a symbol of Ireland. She told them: “Good morning, have some shamrock. Happy St Patrick’s Day.” The Cambridges begin a tour of the Caribbean on Saturday which will see them visit Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Jamaican. “They expressed regret as they had been unable to see the regiment for many years because of serving in Iraq and South Sudan and Covid last year. So it was a great reunion.” Drummer Adam Walsh, handler of mascot Seamus, said about speaking to the duchess: “She said ‘I hope I put the shamrock on right this time and I helped her and we carried on. “I was very excited as this was the first time in three years we have seen them. “Seamus behaved himself. I was afraid he was going to let us down (but) I was more nervous than he was. He was fantastic.”

THE STORY OF XV STRIPES
I
nspired by her local coastal surroundings, entrepreneur and businesswoman Izzey Hung launched XV Stripes in the summer of 2020 (that’s right, mid-lockdown). Izzey says: ‘XV Stripes was born from my inability to find the ideal blue striped duvet set. I had an image of this bold, dazzling, beautifully luxurious stripy fabric that didn’t fade with wear, and that made me feel as if I was in a five-star hotel, but it just didn’t exist. So I thought, “If I can’t find what I want I’ll make it myself!”.’ And that’s just what she did. Using her love of the sea and all things nautical as a template, Izzey brought her dream company to life, pulling together a creative team that included talented head designer Vicky Sanders, (ex Matthew Williamson and Zara Home) and photographers Chris Jenney and Holly Jolliffe. The result has been a rolling production of eco-friendly, vibrant bed linens and accessories in luxurious fabrics for your homes, with the classic blue stripes at the heart of it all. On the way, Izzey has learned all about fabric production, weaving and dyeing techniques, sustainability standards and recycling certification to bring you quality and design without compromise. ‘I love getting stuck in,’ she says. ‘I’ve just spent a week in Portugal sourcing new suppliers, and I’d never miss a photo shoot on one of our local beaches. But it’s not just XV and me, it’s the whole team that makes things work. We’re all so involved. ‘Since we opened our Yarmouth shop in 2021, we’ve been able to give customers the chance to see and feel our fabrics – up close is really the best way of understanding how our products will work

hey say that you can’t keep a good man down. Nor, it seems, can you keep a trend from flourishing. For in spite of all the global skulduggery, the mood amongst designers is shifting — away from the safe shores of minimalism and in search of something more spirited. Among the cornucopia of mood-boosting styles are floor lamps that look like marbles. And the classics as you’ve never seen them. For the era of bold, brazen living is back. And it couldn’t have come sooner.
Unlocking the power of play Take a quick look at the media landscape and you’ll notice a flourishing new genre all about failure. There is Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast. And the new book On Failure by the School of Life. But no matter which medium you favour the 102 APRIL 2022
message is always the same. It’s ok to err and make mistakes. Because, well, it might just set you on a new, more interesting course. The poster boy for such thinking is scientist Andre Geim whose playful “Friday Night Experiments” lead to the discovery of graphene and a rather unexpected Nobel Prize. It’s with similar abandon that designers have begun concocting bold new forms for everyday things. A floor lamp that looks like a snow globe. Or else a sofa shaped like an iceberg. The best part about these designs is that they tend to go where other styles can’t. The VL Studio Floor Lamp, for example, fits perfectly well on a bookcase. While the Albero Bookcase by Poltrona Frau can also serve as a bonafide room divider. It comes back to a maxim that many a startup has used to try and help canalise breakthroughs:
What would this object look like if it was easy? Free from any idea of form or function that has tethered it in the past?
The classics reloaded This season, not even the classics could escape this whimsical impulse with serendipitous new finishes being unveiled on everything from Le Corbusier’s LC6 Table to Flos’ 265 Wall Light. The desire seems to be less about reinvention and more an investigation into how we can make these works as fresh as possible — including updating any lacquers so that they tread more lightly on the Earth. It’s a theme that’s been widely explored at Danish design house Fritz Hansen as they prepare to celebrate their 150th anniversary with a roster of new-look styles. Among our favourites are
the Fri and Ro Lounge Chairs — complete with speckled new bouclé upholstery that celebrates the kaleidoscopic colours found in nature.
Heritage brands step out out For some brands, the edict of a brave new world meant swapping the sanctuary of the lounge for the lushness of nature. Unshackled from their usual context, they promise to help us live in the garden with new comfort and flair, with options to sit among the clouds at Gubi, or discover a Secret Garden with Poltrona Frau. Many of the pieces have also been specifically designed to be used indoors, too — symbolising the final erosion of any boundaries between indoors or out. Design goes full circle The last story is one we’ve been tracking ever since 2017. Call it what you will, curves are everywhere. And they’re not just restricted to soft furnishings, either. Amid the cornucopia of sinuous styles are loopthe-loop dining chairs. Sweeping desks. And even the odd circular bookcase. Part of the impetus for this sumptuous styling is almost certainly traceable to all the undulating shapes being explored in the Metaverse. SEMPER LIGHTING RANGE The Semper Lighting Range, the first light to join Raffield’s collection that features a pivoting, fully adjustable ply-wood frame (which allows the user to customise the direction of the light in their home) is set to be a triumph. Centred around the Latin word for ‘always’, Semper’s shifting form and changeable lighting effects is representative of the seasonal movement and varying light levels of the Sun’s path. Inviting change with its tilting layers, Semper caters for multi-tasking modern spaces and passes the curation of home lighting to the hands of the user.
MAYA WALL PLANTER Introducing an exciting addition to Tom’s soughtafter Green Range, the Maya Wall Planter is the answer to spaces that are calling out for greenery but lack surface area to display indoor houseplants.
