Christmas Family Concert

with James Mayhew, Award-Winning Children’s Author & Illustrator presented classical music concerts for children with different orchestras, ensembles and soloists with his debut concert at the Royal Festival Hall in 2016. The de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra has enjoyed over 50 years of success and brings together over 80 classical musicians who perform a wide musical repertoire under the leadership of their dynamic conductor, Robin Browning. This is a Double Bill, so there will be two 60-minute seasonal concerts taking place on 27 November: at 14:00 and at 16:00 in the 450-seater Weston Auditorium on the de Havilland campus at the University of Hertfordshire. his November the University of Hertfordshire’s resident orchestra, the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra (dHPO) will be performing alongside acclaimed children’s illustrator and author James Mayhew for a wonderful Christmas treat – Fairytales and Pantomimes. Hosted by UH Arts + Culture, the Orchestra will be playing much-loved seasonal favourites by Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Humperdinck, while Mayhew paints his illustrations live on stage and projected onto a big screen for the audience to enjoy. The concert will take place on Advent Sunday, the perfect date to experience the musical tales that inspired the traditional festive Panto. Inna Allen, Acting Head of UH Arts + Culture, says: “We are delighted to be teaming up again with award-winning children’s illustrator and author James Mayhew for a Christmas treat for the whole family. James Mayhew has collaborated with an impressive list of orchestras, and we are thrilled that he will once again perform with the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra. EXPLORING EMPATHY

his autumn, UH Arts + Culture are exploring an important issue of our time – empathy – and what that might mean for how we relate with each other and connect to the things around us. A new art exhibition has opened in the University of Hertfordshire’s Art + Design Gallery that invites us to consider how we resonate with other people and other things. Titled Empathy for People, Empathy for Things, the group exhibition includes work by artists Andy Holden, Paul Johnson, Harold Offeh, Katie Paterson, Feral Practice and Celia Pym. The exhibiting artists are crafting practices and artworks that explore empathy from a number of perspectives. Celia Pym trained in textiles and as a nurse. She repairs clothing and ‘things’ – an act that values the materials, the objects, and people to which they are connected. This sense of connection between objects and people is reflected in Andy Holden’s Pyramid Piece. Over time, the artist’s emotional and intellectual relationship with a piece of rock he took as a child led him to return it to its place of origin. Paul Johnson’s Wallet looks at a relationship between time, object, and human in a more open way. Through simply existing together in the artist’s pocket for five years, the wallet was transformed into something else. Harold Offeh’s film focusses on the presentation of Black bodies in the landscape and is accompanied by a musical score by early 20th century Black British classical composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. invites visitors to meditate and to think about the landscape beneath their feet. Katie Paterson’s Future Library stretches beyond the expected timeline of producing a book and invites the viewer to consider the life span of trees, as well as future people and what they may read. “The exhibition provides an opportunity to reflect on our amazing and complex world, which is built on relationships – and extend this to a relational empathy with fellow humans and other things that form part of our ecologies,” says Curator Elizabeth Murton In addition to the exhibition, UH Arts + Culture are delivering a dynamic programme of related events, which are FREE for all to attend: • ‘Mending Workshop’ with Celia Pym, 8–10 November 2022, 11:00–15:00 This workshop asks us to think about the value of waste; looking at our everyday use of paper packaging as we slowly mend the bags with stitch, patching, and darning. • ‘A Mile in My Shoes’, Empathy Museum, 14–17 November 2022, 10:00–16:00 A Mile in My Shoes is an exhibit by the Empathy Museum. Wallace and Gromit & Morph among familiar faces on new Royal Mail stamps

oyal Mail has unveiled a selection of stamps celebrating beloved Aardman Animations characters including Wallace and Gromit, Morph and Shaun

The Sheep. The Bristol-based animation studio was founded in 1972 and is best known for its films using stopmotion and clay modelling animation techniques. The British postage service company has teamed up with Aardman to feature some of their most celebrated characters on a new set of eight stamps. They include fan favourites Wallace and Gromit, Feathers McGraw, Shaun The Sheep, Timmy, Robin, Morph and Chas, Frank The Tortoise and Rocky and Ginger. Speaking about the collaboration, Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy David Gold said: “This set of stamps will surely bring a smile to everyone’s face. These instantly recognisable, iconic animated characters have found a place in our hearts. We are certain they will add a bit of joy to any envelope.”

In addition to the eight stamps, an exclusive miniature sheet, created specially for Royal Mail by Aardman, will also be available. On the miniature sheet, Wallace and Gromit celebrate four of their favourite cracking moments by displaying them proudly on their wall, in their recognisable home at 62 West Wallaby Street. Key moments on the stamps include those from Wallace and Gromit animated short films A Matter Of Loaf And Death, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and A Grand Day Out. Aardman’s managing director Sean Clarke said: “We are delighted to partner with Royal Mail to celebrate some of our most iconic characters in this colourful and fun-packed stamps series. “We have had the pleasure of creating these films featuring these much-loved characters over the last 40 years, so it is a real honour for the studio to receive this royal stamp of approval. “It’s a true testament to all the hard work that goes into making these productions and we are sure that our fans will enjoy them.” Aardman was founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who began their animation partnership while at school when they created a character called Aard-man, which the BBC bought for its Vision On series and marked the creation of Aardman Animations. Lord, 67, and Sproxton, 68, began to gain widespread recognition after creating the nowhighly recognisable shape-shifting clay character Morph for the BBC’s Take Hart series. Aardman are also responsible for creating some of the most successful stop-motion films, including Chicken Run, after British animator Nick Park joined the company. The Aardman collaboration stamps are now available on general sale now.

n addition to our established galleries in London and Aldeburgh Suffolk, Megan Thompson opened the Harpenden branch after moving her family here during the lockdown. Her decision was cemented by the sculpture positioned in front of this soon-to-be gallery– by artist and longstanding friend John Brown. Thompson’s Gallery is family-owned and run since its opening by John and Sue Thompson in 1982. ROTHAMSTED MANOR, HARPENDEN

he Rothamsted Estate in Harpenden, Hertfordshire is home to Rothamsted Manor. A beautiful Grade 1 listed building that has recently been reopened as a venue. The first record of the Rothamsted estate was made in 1212 when it was owned by Henry Gubion. It was bought in 1623 by Anne Wittewronge - the widow of Jacob Wittewronge - on behalf of her son John, who was then 4 years old. John became Lord of the Manor of Rothamsted in 1639 and the estate continued to be passed through the family until John Bennet Lawes (founder of Rothamsted Experimental Station, now Rothamsted Research) was born in the house on 28th December 1814. Sir John Bennet Lawes and Sir Henry Gilbert together developed a fundamental understanding of plant nutrition and produced the world’s first commercial chemical fertilizers. The house, whilst used predominantly as a family home since records began, was requisitioned for the use of the military in WWII and became a listening post, recording and feeding messages to Bletchley Park for decoding. After the war it was converted into accommodation for staff and visitors to Rothamsted until 2020, when the ground floor was opened as a venue for the community, where guests can enjoy afternoon teas, murder mystery evenings, or book the venue for a private function. Filled with impressive features that have remained largely untouched since the 1600s, the Manor will impress guests and provide plenty of inspiration for any event. The external gardens are taken care of by the onsite grounds team and are currently being prepared for another summer season. The Chef and his team have been creating some wonderful new menus with local suppliers, to create a truly unique experience. rom LEGO play to building kit cars, STEM is evolving in schools today and the future is both exciting and challenging. Of the 788,125 A-level grades, which students received this summer, STEM subjects enjoyed an extraordinary dominance at the top of the charts for A-level uptake. Maths holds the crown at 89,605 A-level entries, with only Psychology pipping Biology and Chemistry to the number two spot, proving the growing popularity of STEM subjects today. Yet in a fast-moving technological landscape, employers are increasingly looking for students who can approach STEM as more than simply an exercise in repeating ‘parrot-fashion’ what they learned for the exam. The very term STEM suggests something that is more than the sum of its parts – an appreciation of how pupils can apply their learning to the real world, with all of the complexity that real world problem solving requires. Take LEGO as an example, arguably nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. Lego enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work. LEGO allows students to model a real-world system and set of controls, giving them the chance to understand and visualise the connection between a theoretical concept and its practical application.

This is perhaps why it is becoming so popular in schools today. A car is a perfect example of this because it is subject to the laws of physics, the economics of mathematics, it must suit the ergonomics of biology, it must be engineered to last and requires technological skill and understanding to come together. This is perhaps why more and more schools are incorporating the building of kit cars into their STEM offering. Most importantly, for students to work on a kit car successfully, it requires them to design, work as a team, model, communicate, build, problem solve and test products and solutions – building the vital inter-personal and collaborative skills which the STEM industry is crying out for. As STEM continues to evolve, we should expect to see schools pushing the boundaries for future STEM-related activities. Each generation arriving in secondary schools will do so with a more advanced digital skillset, having grown up in such a rapidly changing technological landscape. Countdown Begins to the Opening of Stagecoach in Totteridge

rincipal Mara and Manager Katie completed the London jigsaw of Stagecoach franchises this year with their purchase of the last remaining territories (Finchley Central and North Finchley). Their first school in their Finchley Central catchment opened this September, running Sunday morning classes at Hendon School. They are now eagerly counting down the days until the grand opening of their first school in their North Finchley catchment which will offer Saturday morning classes at Totteridge Academy. Demand for performing arts classes has risen by 10% since the pandemic. She sadly lost her father at twelve and found a new stage to release on the hockey pitch, which led her to compete for county. I see the arts as an effective therapeutic tool which can help everyone in their authentic life journey. Fire Garden is one of the installations at Hatfield Park’s new Christmas trail

beautiful Fire Garden has been revealed as one of the spectacular works in the new Christmas light trail at Hatfield Park, Hertfordshire, between 25 November and 31 December 2022. The installation will be part of a spectacular collection of illuminations which will transform the 42 acres of gardens and parkland where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. Designed by Culture Creative, the Fire Garden is made up of hundreds of flame heads interspersed with Lantern Trees by Mandylights, which echo the timeless beauty of old Victorian-style street lamps. The brass-effect shades shimmer in bright gold,

with electric flames inside the lanterns to inspire a feeling of warm firelight. WESTMINSTER LODGE BEGINS WORK ON REFURBISHMENTS TO IMPROVE FACILITY

local leisure centre has begun work on a £1,000,000 refurbishment to provide state-of-the-art facilities for local people. Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, run by Everyone Active in partnership with St Albans City and District Council, will receive a full gym refurbishment, improvements to the café and soft play and will have a brand new, high-end group cycling studio installed. A phased approach will be taken to the gym’s overhaul, but it will remain open to customers until works are complete after Christmas. The group cycle sessions are to be relocated to an alternative studio until the works are complete at Christmas, whilst a brand-new, high-end group cycling studio is created. The current soft play has been closed whilst it will be relocated and given a fresh look with a brand-new Roman-themed soft play area, which will open on Monday 14 November. The café will close on Sunday 20 November, with a brand-new café launching on Monday 19 December.

s we move into Winter, the mood this year is all about comfort. What we’re currently seeking from our homes is to feel calm, relaxed and cosy. They are our personal sanctuaries, designed for no one but those that live within them, and they’ve become spaces where we want to express our unique tastes, personalities and histories. The contemporary home says ‘come on in,’ ‘snuggle into this,’ ‘remember this?’ or ‘have a look at that.’ Combined with our ongoing love-affair with all things natural, the décor emerging for A/W 2022 is soothing, serene and simple, either touched by the organic or with the highly personal embedded into it. These interiors inspire peaceful nights in, thoughtful conversations, happy memories and the occasional wry smile. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of the best.

A NATURAL EMBRACE / GREEN UPHOLSTERY As well as the colours and physical reminder of nature we are bringing into our homes this season, it’s also a representation of how all things natural make us feel. The welcoming embrace of the great outdoors is represented interiors-wise by sumptuous upholstery, tempting textures and cosy sink-into-me cushions, which combined with verdant shades instantly switches the mind into unwinding mode. Sofas and chairs emulate nature in the simplest, clearest of ways, with grounded, unexaggerated tones touched by the forest spanning moss, sage, fern and firs. LINE OF SIGHT / LINEAR PENDANT LIGHTS As the nights draw in and the curtains close, it’s time to think about lighting. The designs shepherding us through these darker days are based around simplicity. Not exaggerated. Not attention grabbing. Leading A/W 2022 are linear pendants made from elegant, slimline forms that range from the calligraphic, twisting and turning mid-air, to the steadfastly straightened. Such considered minimalism creates a soothing, easygoing space, one where the eye is pulled upward only momentarily and illumination appears as if from thin air. Decidedly minimalist, the Oneline by artist Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard for Fritz Hansen is a sleek slash of brightness which rotates 360 degrees to cast light in any direction. Moooi’s Gravity Chandelier by Paul Cocksedge is composed of elegant flexible arms which fall naturally in flowing curves, the shapes defined by where its glass shades are positioned. A pair of ultra-delicate rings, Lodes’s Elara pendant by Nika Zupanc is an understated representation of astral motion, its loops silently interacting with and orbiting each other. A suspended arc, Cattelan Italia’s Nahun

lamp by Studio Kronos feels almost typographical, as if drawn in the air with the sweep of a brush, the outer LED strip casting a diffused glow.

ON DISPLAY / GLASS DISPLAY CABINETS 2022 is the time to break those much-loved mementoes and treasured trinkets out of hiding. As part of crafting a home imbued with meaning and personality, we’re ready to put ourselves on display with the bevy of newly launched glassfronted storage pieces and curate our very own cabinets of curiosities. Transparent doors keep items safe and protected yet give them undeniable presence in the room, framing them and presenting collections to passers-by, declaring who you are and telling your story. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Audrey cabinet by Pocci&Dondoli for Bontempi is composed almost entirely of extra-transparent glass, diverting all attention onto the objects placed within it. Gallotti&Radice’s Soda cabinet by Draga & Aurel adds to the display’s personality with its playful rounded shape and gold-toned glass, items on shelves interacting with its circular frame. ‘Like a small stage, rich in attention and details, Shibusa tells the story of personal passions’ confirms designer Mauro Lipparini, his cabinet an elegant combination of glass and ash.

A BIGGER SPLASH / TEXTURED GLASS When there is no need for glass to be transparent, designers are taking the opportunity to make it decorative and experimental. Transporting us straight to the shores of the sea, the foot of a waterfall or the reflections in a pond, this there’s a new vogue for textured glass ¬– steeped once again in our desire to be close to nature. Embracing the hypnotic yet soothing traits of water, pieces of glass are rippled and warped like sheets of water blown by the wind, expressions of deft craft skills as well as our collective need to bring the outside in. The surface of Cassina’s Esosoft table by Antonio Citterio feels like an angular slice of gentle river, its thick textured glass taking on the appearance of water softly brushed by a breeze. Bontempi’s aptly named H20 Coffee Table by Studio F+B Design forms a lonely puddle disturbed by undulating concentric rings, as if a stone has just been dropped into it, and Bonaldo’s blown glass Acquerelli Table Lamp by Marco Zito imitates a range of watery expressions, from icy frozen milk white to ripples full of intriguing movement.

Get your protractors out – angles are back. After years of yearning for circles, roundness and eschewing corners, sharpness and straight lines in the home, we’ve started to revolt. These aren’t your usual right-angled tables, it’s a whole lot more creative than that, with designers experimenting with balance, illusion and juxtaposition in materials soft and hard. Oh, and you can forget about the rules of gravity, too. Cassina merges precision and comfort with its Flutz chair by Michael Anastassiades, its sharp parallel aluminium sides sheltering a soft seat within. Unsurprisingly, Bonaldo’s Pisa coffee tables by Mauro Lipparini lean diagonally to the side, balancing themselves with an off-kilter surface or standing thin and tower-like. Huckleberry creates a unique kitchen for House of Hackney

ucked away at the entrance to the mystical Cornish Castle of Trematon sits a small lodge house – ‘Quercus Lodge’ – an unassuming octagonal building painted in a dusky cream. Nothing on the outside suggests what you will find within: a riot of pattern and colour, layered fabrics and wallpapers that draw you into a fantasy world of flowers and foliage. Here, the kitchen feels pared back by comparison to the other rooms, with its Huckleberry freestanding kitchen furniture uniquely customised for House of Hackney. Beginning the latest project in the renovation of their home the Castle of Trematon, owners of House of Hackney Frieda Gormley and and Javvy M Royle approached Huckleberry to design and make a kitchen for the castle’s lodge house. Huckleberry’s Matt and Claire Podesta met Frieda and Javvy and quickly bonded over their shared ethos of sustainability and love of British-made design. And so the plan for the Quercus Lodge kitchen was born. Huckleberry’s freestanding kitchen furniture is designed primarily as stand-alone pieces which emanate balance and proportion, but at the same

time incorporate appliances, sinks and taps. It is made to look as though it could have been in the house for years, if not decades, completely comfortable in its surroundings. The family of furniture includes islands, dressers, base cabinets incorporating sinks, hobs and dishwashers, tall cupboards, plate racks and tables. Creating kitchen furniture for this project was exciting especially incorporating the new range of House of Hackney paint and tiles. ettled in the open countryside in Buckinghamshire this house is nestled in a secluded rural location, reflecting its surroundings of mature woodland. The setting and elegant simplicity were paramount to the design of this house. The brief was to provide a dwelling which responds to its context in materiality. A simple palette of carefully selected materials includes the use of stone from the earth on the lower level and timber on the floating box of the upper level, enhanced by a green tinted series of panels to provide transparency and reflect the surrounding plot-scape. With clean geometric lines, the floating first floor cantilevers and balances on the ground floor, providing long reaching views from the master bedroom and several short distance views of the plot from the other bedrooms. This architectural element pulls you into the site and allows you to marvel at its geometry and weightlessness. The lower floor is grounded by the strong stone element; the roofing detail of the first floor floats, gliding with the frameless glazing. Approaching the house, the glass enhances the large open spaces. The open plan ground floor connects from the front entrance area through to the rear garden and a horizontal expanse of glazing connects the rear living spaces to the garden-scape to the rear. Vertical electronically controlled louvres to the windows provide solar shading and privacy shading
