NEW HYBRID CHARTER MARKET TO BE LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER
H
istoric St Albans Charter Market is to be relaunched in a new hybrid form involving a mixture of traditional stalls and gazebos. Stalls in the City’s famous blue and yellow colours will provide the Market’s central core while similarly branded gazebos will be set up nearby. The aim is to create a harmonious look with some traders being allowed to bring their own gazebos and food trucks to positions on the fringes. St Albans City and District Council manages the twice-weekly Market and has been examining its future following the pandemic. It has decided on the hybrid format after consulting with traders, shoppers and other interested groups with the Market relaunching on Wednesday 7 September. Councillor Robert Donald, Chair of the Regeneration and Business Committe, said: “I’m absolutely delighted we are finally able to push forward with a hybrid Market.
1 6 J U LY 2 0 2 2
“We’ll now have the best of both worlds – the reassuring sight of the return of stalls in uniform St Albans heritage colours in St Peters Street together with gazebos.” To provide the hybrid Market, 80 new stalls will be purchased by the Council to replace the current ones which are run-down while 35 gazebos have already been bought. One or two trailers, required to transport the new equipment from storage to the Market site, will be acquired to replace the 16 vehicles that were previously used. Tenders are being sought for a contractor to put up and dismantle the Market stalls and gazebos. This task was undertaken by the Council’s own workforce before the pandemic when only gazebos brought by the traders were allowed to reduce the risk of COVID contamination. Councillor Donald added: “Our Charter Market dates back centuries. It is one of our City’s great attractions and we are determined to ensure it has a sustainable and exciting future ahead of it.”

BBC Proms 2022 THE WORLD’S GREATEST CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 15 July – 10 September 2022, Royal Albert Hall
T
he Proms returns to the iconic Royal Albert Hall this summer for its first full eight-week season in two years. Its aim is to bring the best in classical music to the widest possible audience, remaining true to founder-conductor Henry Wood’s original vision in 1895. Whether you are a classical connoisseur or think ‘classical music is not for me’ there is something for everyone in the eight week series of concerts. Pick of the Classics - from Mozart and Beethoven to Ravel and Prokofiev, this Proms season is jam-packed full of classic composers and repertoire. With performances from some of the greatest orchestras in the world, a night at the Proms is the ultimate concert experience.
First Night of the Proms 2022: Verdi Requiem Friday 15 July 2022, 7.30pm Hope and grief, mourning and celebration, thunder and tenderness come together in Verdi’s mighty Requiem. After two years of reducedsized performances, the Royal Albert Hall once again rings with the massed voices of the BBC Symphony Chorus and Crouch End Festival Chorus, launching the 2022 Proms with this choral 1 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2
masterpiece, which brings all the high drama of 19th-century opera to its emotive setting of the Latin Mass for the Dead. Sakari Oramo will conduct a spectacular First Night of the 2022 BBC Proms. Giuseppe Verdi had a complicated relationship with religion: he asked to be buried with just ‘one priest, one candle, one cross’. But as a born dramatist, he knew how to tell a great story – and his colossal Requiem encompasses death, rebirth and the end of the world itself, in music that simply blazes with passion and power. A truly magnificent First Night of the 2022 BBC Proms.
THE DETAILS For more information and to book tickets, visit royalalberthall. com or call the Royal Albert Hall Box Office on 020 7070 4441 Seated tickets for all BBC Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall are placed into price bands, starting at £8.50 (plus booking fee). The Monaco Yacht Show takes its
“seducation” approach into 2022
T
he Monaco Yacht Show has announced new developments in its themed exhibition areas, once again proving its will to immerse visitors in the world of superyachting. The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”). Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project. The organisers are therefore revamping the

Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display. The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule. The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub dedicated to future yacht design projects - is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area. These areas will complement the show’s other themed exhibitions: • Parvis Piscine: yacht interior design and decoration companies, • Upper Deck Lounge (at Parvis Piscine): luxury products and services, • Quai Antoine Ier: yacht tenders, water toys, luxury cars and motorbikes, • Darse Sud tent: equipment manufacturers and yachting services, • Quai Albert Ier tent: yacht-related equipment, maintenance and service companies.

The Sapphire Experience offers concierge services - i.e. directly organising yacht visits hand-in-hand with exhibitors - and a range of other VIP activities and services throughout the show. The first day of the show (Wednesday 28 September) will be on invitation-only. Private clients - holding “Discover” passes or “Sapphire Experience” passes (the show’s official visit programme) - and their parties (“Advise” passes) will be granted privileged access to the Dockside Area while the other areas will remain open to all passes. From Thursday 29 September, the Dockside Area will be open to the public. General Manager of the MYS Gaëlle Tallarida had this to say: “The Monaco Yacht Show made its grand return to the international event scene in 2021, sporting a 3-year development programme with a clearly-stated goal: to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients”.

OVO at the ROMAN THEATRE OPEN AIR FESTIVAL presents
‘LITTLE WOMEN’ August 3rd-14th
LITTLE WOMEN – SYNOPSIS Jo, the second eldest of the four March daughters and an aspiring writer, receives yet another rejection from a publisher. Her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her she can do better by making her stories more personal. Begrudgingly, Jo weaves the story of how she and her sisters - Meg, the eldest, who’s on the brink of love, sweet-natured Beth who always puts others first and Amy, the youngest and most precocious - grew up in America. Even though money is short, times are tough and their father is away, their infectious sense of fun sweeps everyone up in their adventures - including Laurie, the boy next door. And through sisterly squabbles and tragic losses, the sisters discover that growing up is sometimes very hard to do.

VO is delighted to present Stephanie Allison’s and Amy Connery’s smartly paced, fresh approach to Louisa May Alcott’s classic coming-of-age 1868 novel at the Roman Theatre in August. Allison and Connery (whose ‘Scissor Sisters’ was a smash hit at OVO’s recent Maltings Theatre season) have written a new script in collaboration with playwright Sophie Swithenbank to bring a new and modern outlook to the story while retaining the novel’s enormous, global appeal. They’ve added live music, movement and physical theatre to bring the story to life. Says Stephanie Allison: “Little Women has resonated with both of us for years; the themes of family, love and coming of age Alcott explored over a century ago still exist today. At the time Little Women was rare in that the story centred around women and gave space to their journey; although modern expectations for women have changed a great deal often they’re still expected to occupy the traditional role of mother and caregiver. As Jo and her sisters navigate growing up, the challenges they face and overcome are ones many of our audience will recognise or have been through.” Fans around the world will know that Alcott

wrote two separate books: Little Women and Good Wives. While she wrote movingly and entertainingly about the lives of her heroines, particularly Jo, she was eventually pressurised by her publishers to marry everyone off! Adds Amy Connery: “We can’t help but wonder how Little Women might have ended had Alcott not been under such pressure to marry Jo off – it led us to adjust the relationship between Jo March and Professor Bhaer. We were also really interested in the strictly structured society where every step was planned out for women in general and in our production we explore how the March sisters challenge what society expects of them as they grow into women.”. Louisa May Alcott’s timeless and captivating book is brought to life in a brand new adaptation, perfect for all the family. This classic story embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit. Stephanie Allison and Amy Connery studied drama at Exeter University and share a common approach for creating and devising theatre. They worked as Movement Directors with OVO on the Alban Arena and Roman Theatre productions of ‘Peter Pan’ and the Maltings Theatre production of ‘Mosquitoes’. Last year they choreographed scenes in OVO’s Roman Theatre production of ‘A Winter’s Tale’. As codirectors Stephanie and Amy work together in the rehearsal space, developing ideas together and with their cast; they co-directed Amy’s gripping two-hander, ‘Scissor Sisters’, about a gruesome true murder at the Maltings Theatre earlier this year

PALOMA FAITH Interview by Kristan J Caryl

E
arlier in the year, Paloma Faith was at a British Vogue Fashion & Film Party in aid of the Ukraine crisis. She met one of her heroines, Malala Yousafzai, and cried because she was “overcome to be in the room with such greatness.” Despite the grandeur of the occasion, the party was cut short. “I’m like Cinderella,” she says over Zoom the morning after. “I always have to leave by midnight because my kids wake up at 7 am whether I like it or not.” She might be a double platinum-selling, BRIT award-winning pop star to most of us, but to her two children she is simply ‘mum’. When asked if switching between the two is easy, Paloma matter-of-factly says, “no!” but with a signature infectious laugh. Despite being a commercially successful and mainstream pop star, Paloma has never shied away from telling it how it is. Her confessional BBC documentary ‘Paloma Faith: As I Am’ earlier this year picked up plenty of critical acclaim for its honest discussions around motherhood. Her most recent album, 2020’s Infinite Things, also touches on those issues with tracks like ‘Me Time’ frankly addressing the realities of parenthood with lyrics such as “I need some me time, figuring out who I want to be time… shut the door and I just want to scream time”. “I do feel guilty about that,” she says during a rare break as her youngest child takes their morning nap. “I think that’s one of the massive problems being a parent. You can feel like maybe your identity is not conducive to, or doesn’t correlate with, how you perceive parenting should be. Like this morning, I went to a baby group, and
it was so, well, I was like, what am I doing? This just isn’t my tribe.” Of course, the diminutive powerhouse feels much more at home on stage. This summer she embarks on a 23-date tour with big outdoor shows at places such as Campbell Park in Milton Keynes on July 17th and Hatfield Park on August 5th with support with James Morrison and Eurovision hero, Sam Ryder, respectively. Her last tour in 2021 was blighted by personal issues as well as the Covid pandemic which meant team members were constantly dropping in and out, so she is more excited than ever to be back on the road in more normal circumstances. “There is nothing like singing and having people singing back to me,” she beams. “I think that the beauty of live performance is when it’s really real and true to that day, true to how I feel at that moment. I don’t do fully choreographed shows, they’re never the same, and I think that’s why a lot of people throughout the years have bought multiple tickets to loads of dates because they know that it’s always different and they don’t want to miss anything.” Her children won’t miss anything either. Because they are so young, they will be on the road and in fact, “really love” sleeping on the tour bus. And so will her mum. “She always comes, she loves a trip!” Although some of us might feel self-conscious singing lyrics like “I’m insatiable and I know it’s wrong” or “New lover made me downright restless... We’d be rude, and be crude” in front of our mums or kids, Paloma will not. She stands by what she writes. “I’ve always felt socially responsible,” she says. “That doesn’t change because I have become a parent. I’ve always known what I write will have an impact.” She does concede, though, that she is seeing herself reflected back in her elder child more and more. “She’s very sweet but very bossy!” With the newfound responsibility of parenthood comes a new level of maturity as an artist. That was born out with the masterclass songwriting of her album - which was the first Paloma engineered entirely on her own, and her first to make the Number 1 spot in the UK Album Chart - but is also sure to play out on stage this summer. “Touring is the only reason I do this job,” she says before the sound of a crying baby whisks her back to reality.

he value of the Queen’s UK property portfolio has reached new heights in 2022, with the figure more than £3billion according to a new study. Research has estimated that Her Majesty’s royal property portfolio may be worth up to £3.7 billion, with royal residences including castles, palaces and luxurious lodges across London and the UK. The study, from retirement property experts McCarthy Stone, uncovered the costs of the Sovereign’s London homes as the UK celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June, looking at how much it would cost to buy or rent the spectacular British landmarks.
The cost to buy London’s royal residences Buckingham Palace, the most famous royal residence and one of the UK’s most attractive tourist attractions, is unsurprisingly the priciest property in the Queen’s portfolio and is estimated at £1.3bn. The second most expensive London property is St James’s Palace, priced at £600m. Next is Kensington Palace, which comprises of multiple apartments. It’s grand architecture, royal history and Kensington and Chelsea postcode have helped the palace reach an estimated £558.2m in total value. 3 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2

Kensington Palace, If the Queen were a regular landlord, Prince William and Kate may pay around £179,400 in rent per month to live in their apartment at the central London residence. However, Nottingham Cottage, a twobedroom property nestled within the grounds of Kensington Palace, has been estimated to have tHe most affordable rent of all the residences. ‘Nott Cott’, the former home to both William and Kate, and later Harry and Meghan, could expect £7,900 in rent per month. THE ART OF MENSWEAR
AT V&A – IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GUCCI V&A exhibition celebrates masculine attire. Sainsbury Gallery, until 6 November 2022
F
ashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear is the first major V&A exhibition to celebrate the power, artistry and diversity of masculine attire and appearance. The show traces how menswear has been fashioned and refashioned over the centuries, and how designers, tailors and artists – and their clients and sitters – have constructed and performed masculinity, and unpicked it at the seams. Fashioning Masculinities presents around 100 looks and 100 artworks, displayed thematically across three galleries - Undressed, Overdressed, and Redressed. Contemporary looks by legendary designers and rising stars are displayed alongside historical treasures from the V&A’s collections and landmark loans: classical sculptures, Renaissance paintings, iconic photographs, and powerful film and performance. Outfits worn by familiar faces are interspersed throughout, from Harry Styles, Billy Porter and Sam Smith to David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich.
4 0 J U LY 2 0 2 2
Innovative creations and diverse representations highlight and celebrate the multiplicities of masculine sartorial self-expression, dressing beyond the binary. Fashioning Masculinities opened with a Craig Green SS2021 ensemble of a deconstructed suit, alluding to the construction and deconstruction of both the masculine body and conventions of masculinity, a theme that is central throughout the show. Undressed will explore the male body and underwear in a utopian dreamscape, whilst Overdressed will take visitors into the elite masculine wardrobe in a sumptuous, immersive space with courtly grandeur, featuring oversized silhouettes, abundant colour, and lavish materials. Redressed includes a section on leather showing how designers like Tom Ford for Gucci and Donatella Versace took their interest to a new place, whilst a series of frock coats from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day include examples by Prada, Alexander McQueen and Raf Simons. And alongside is extensive photography showing changing styles and attitudes, from Oscar Wilde, Claude Cahun and Cecil Beaton to The Beatles and Sam Smith.

iffany & Co. is embarking on the next chapter of its “Vision & Virtuosity” exhibition, bringing over 400 objects from the House’s archives to London’s iconic Saatchi Gallery. A visual chronicle of the storied jeweller since its founding in New York City in 1837, “Vision & Virtuosity” takes visitors on a journey through everything from archival high jewellery designs, Tiffany’s famed window displays and its recently acquired Empire Diamond of over 80 carats to important relics of popular culture such as the original script from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It is a celebration of Tiffany’s authority as the purveyor of the world’s finest diamonds and a showcase of how two core values—vision and virtuosity—have guided the House for 185 years. Each of the exhibition’s seven chapters explore separate themes that are central to Tiffany’s brand identity, heritage, and creative influence. Upon entering Saatchi Gallery, guests will explore founder Charles Lewis Tiffany’s legacy and, in the subsequent sections, experience the works of some of the House’s most creative forces such as Jean Schlumberger and Elsa Peretti. ELECTRIC CAR REVOLUTION IS BUZZING !
I
t’s no secret that more and more of us are turning to electric cars. With the Government proposing to ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 we are all going to become part of the green revolution like it or not. But what model do we buy and how do we choose ? One manufacturer at the forefront of the EV space is VW with a range of models in all shapes and sizes including the top selling ID.3. And the latest vehicle - which will not be available to buy until next year- has certainly captured everyone’s imagination. Think iconic campervan and then fast forward 70 years and you have the retro, futuristic, carbon neutral, multifunctional ID.BUZZ. Indeed Alan Day Motor Group in Hampstead and New Southgate took 50 pre bookings with a £2,000 fee for the iconic VW campervan in just 24 hours. Darran Clarke, marketing director of Alan Day Motor Group in London said:”There has been phenomenal interest in the ID.Buzz. “It ticks all the right boxes, stylish, cool, adaptable and eco friendly - this vehicle was definitely built from the ground up with electrification in mind.” The state of the art 4.71 metre long campervan boasts a range of 258 miles, top speed of 90 mph, a charge time of 5%- 80% in 30 minutes

and a starting price of £57,115, rising to £62,995 depending on specifications. Add to that it has an animal leather free interior, recycled seat covers and floor coverings, it is a complete multi-functional, fully connected electric vehicle for families. Mr Clarke added: “The ID. Buzz pays homage to the first campervan but this is on an entirely different level. It is bristling with innovative technology and redefines modern e-mobility.” “We’ve actually had so much interest in the ID.Buzz, we had to divert some staff to handle all the inquiries - it seems to have struck a chord with the motoring public in the UK. We are eagerly awaiting our first deliveries next year.”
“It ticks all the right boxes, stylish, cool, adaptable and eco friendly - this vehicle was definitely built from the ground up with electrification in mind.”

Prepping for Exam Results this Summer By Simon Winchester, Academic Director at St Margaret’s School
R
esults day 2022 will see the first set of GCSE and A level exam results awarded to pupils since the pandemic took hold back in 2020. This year’s Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts are currently kneedeep in revision and are busily sitting their exams. With the end of term in sight and the long summer wait ahead, the Academic Director at an independent day and boarding school in Bushey has shared some useful advice for pupils and parents to help them to prepare for the day when it comes. With adjustments to coursework, foresight of key topics and advance notification and provision of materials, many steps have been taken to level the playing field for pupils returning to official examinations this year. In 2019, around 20% of all GCSE grades were at grade 7 and above. In 2021, when candidates were awarded Teacher Assessed Grades, this rose to around 30%. Ofqual’s intention is to gradually return the examination standard to pre-pandemic levels, with this summer’s results pitched at a halfway point between 2019 and 2021. This means results day 2022 should see pupils graded more generously than in 2019, but less generously than in 2021. For pupils opening their envelopes this summer, the big picture maths of these decisions will undoubtedly seem cold and distant. Year 11 and
5 0 J U LY 2 0 2 2
Year 13 pupils have watched their older peers go through the uncertainty of the last two years. Indeed, Year 13 experienced the shutdown of their schools shortly before their GCSEs, with the changes in policy around grading by algorithm in summer 2020, and as a result, they will not have had the processes and experiences of results day modelled for them by their peers. Therefore, this summer, notions of fairness will feel particularly stretched and families should seek the close guidance of their children’s teachers and Heads of Department. If a result doesn’t seem right or fair, pupils are entitled to receive copies of their scripts, and to ask that the marking of their scripts be reviewed. Your child’s teacher will be best placed to suggest whether the mark they have received warrants an official review. Examiners too, have been out of practice for the last two years, and in some subjects, they are in short supply. Most important of all, all pupils should try to visit their school in person on results day. Most schools will make results available electronically; however, the guidance your school can provide in-person on the day is invaluable. Making quick decisions about how best to take action, is undoubtedly easier if pupils are able to talk around these decisions with the staff who have taught them face to face. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Our routes cover many areas in North and Central London and the Home Counties. We currently offer services to Barnet, Berkhamsted, Blackmore End, Borehamwood, Buckhurst Hill, Chingford, Chorleywood, Codicote, Cricklewood, Crouch End, Enfield, Finchley, Gerrards Cross, Golders Green, Gospel Oak, Hadley Wood, Hampstead, Harpenden, Highgate, Muswell Hill, Oakwood, Radlett, St Albans, St John’s Wood, Southgate, Swiss Cottage, Welwyn, Wheathampstead, Whetstone, Winchmore Hill and Woolmer Green. five years, is especially grateful for the school’s adaptable approach. ‘The service has helped us because, when my daughter was younger, school transport gave a door-to-door service which meant I knew she was safe. As she’s got older, I’ve appreciated the flexibility. If she stays for an extra night or decides to come home one evening, they always do their best to accommodate requests for changes – they are unfailingly helpful.’ Each vehicle accommodates between six and eight pupils, and we aim for a journey time of no more than an hour. In the evenings, transport departs Queenswood at 6:00pm (Monday to Thursday) and 4:30pm (Friday). This later departure time allows pupils to participate in our extensive after-school activity programme and complete their homework in a supervised environment. There’s even a smartphone app to keep parents informed while the vehicles are en route. For this family of a Year 9 pupil, Queenswood transport has had a hugely positive effect. ‘We have had three years of superb service. The drivers have been great, always punctual, polite and friendly and our daughter loves the chats the girls have on the way to and from school. The school app means we can keep track of where they are on the route which helps a busy family in the mornings. We receive notifications when they arrive to and from school which is so helpful and reassuring. It means that mornings and evenings run very smoothly in our household.’ For more information, visit queenswood.org/transport

Glitter & shimmer through the summer
Metallics are having a make-up moment, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
I
f you’re not afraid to shine bright, the glitter make-up trend is for you. A little sparkle goes a long way – and it’s an easy way to elevate your look for daytime, as well as after dark. “As we head into the summer season, metallics and glitters are going to be at the forefront,” says Charlotte Knight, founder and CEO of Ciate London, Lottie London and Skin Proud. It was a big trend on the spring/summer catwalks, “With Acne Studios, Etro and Tom Ford all showcasing stunning metallic or glitter looks across eyes, lips and body”, adds Knight. “These big statements, and what we’ve seen gracing our screens on the likes of Euphoria this year, will see us all trying to recreate the looks at home.”
HERE’S HOW TO GET IN ON THE TREND YOURSELF… 6 4 J U LY 2 0 2 2
Subtle shine For a delicate look, Knight recommends adding a pop of glitter to your eyeshadow using a pigmented palette. “You could also take the eyeshadow lightly across the lips to give an extra touch of magic,” she says.
“Knight recommends adding a pop of glitter to your eyeshadow”
lightly dust over your cheekbones and the apples of your cheeks for an amped strobed skin look.”
Precise application
Melanie Barrese, head make-up artist for Illamasqua, says sparkle is a great way to add some texture to your beauty look. If you’re not sure where to start, she says: “I love to add some glitter to the centre of the eye [near the tear duct], in a similar colour to the rest of the eye make-up. So even if the rest of the make-up is matte, the eyes get a beautiful sparkle and added dimension.” Barrese says applying a light colour to your cheekbones is another soft way of adding some glitter. “Choosing a shade similar to highlighter,
When working with glitter, Barrese recommends using a flat, small brush, ensuring you’ve shaken off any excess, and using patting motions to apply to the skin. She also advises applying foundation and undereye concealer as your last step, “So you can wipe away any dropped glitter, ensuring your application is clean”.
Choosing your colours “The shade is up to you, but if you’re really unsure, a colour a few shades lighter than your skin tone will give your eyes some sparkle and open up the face,” says Barrese.
Having fun with glitter “For something more playful, you can also place glitter in more non-conventional areas around the eye, such as above the crease of the eye, on the outer corner, and along the lower lash line,” Barrese says. “Pair it with a natural, glowy skin to achieve a youthful, modern and fun look.” Knight says: “Another really easy wearable look is by adding a touch of metallic to your natural freckles – to enhance your natural beauty, and give all those catwalk and Y2K vibes.”

How to get in on the trend for
SUMMER SUITING
From miniskirt suits to pastel tones, Prudence Wade picks out the best ways to wear tailoring this season. PALE BLUE CROC PU OVERSIZED BIKER JACKET, £25.50 (WAS £75); PALE BLUE CROC PU MID RISE STRAIGHT LEG TROUSERS, £36 (WERE £45), AVAILABLE FROM PRETTYLITTLETHING
F
ew things are as classic as a suit – and tailoring has come a long way. Once the reserve of menswear (with women wearing the odd skirt set), it slowly made itself into womenswear on the red carpet, and is now firmly part of our everyday fashion vocabulary. However, suits can still be a bit daunting – you might think they’re only for formal events, or feel a bit heavy for summer, for instance. But one look on Instagram will tell you summer suiting is having a massive moment right now. It’s also an easy way to express your personality, while looking chic and put-together with relatively little effort.
6 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2
THIS IS HOW TO WEAR WARM WEATHER TAILORING THIS YEAR… IN PASTELS… Pastels for spring might not be ground-breaking, but there’s a reason it’s a classic look. Pale pinks, baby blues and spearmint greens are all perfect for standing out from the crowd in your tailoring. This year, the trend is overwhelmingly for slouchy, relaxed fits. These styles are incredibly versatile – wear with a crisp shirt for office days, a plain white T-shirt and trainers for the weekend, or you could even dress up with heels and silk vests, or corset-style tops underneath for nights out or summer weddings.

IN SKIRT SUITS… Channel your inner Cher from Clueless or Fran Drescher from The Nanny in this year’s retro take on suiting. While the last few seasons have been all about suits worn with matching shorts, skirts are back in a big way – and the shorter, the better. In May, Selena Gomez showed us how to wear the modern skirt suit while promoting the new series of her TV show Only Murders In The Building, donning a yellow mini paired with a matching jacket. The look feels fresh with a short-sleeved blazer and pearl accent buttons – and Gomez turned to the high street for her look, nabbing the outfit from Mango. Either go for pastel colours like Gomez, lean into the retro vibe with checked prints, or go allout in bright colours for a really kicky look.
IN INTERESTING MATERIALS… Linen blend suits are perfect for summer weather, but what if you want to give your tailoring a bit of a twist this year? We’re seeing a growing trend for choosing classic silhouettes in interesting materials – and it would seem like faux leather snakeskin is having a particular moment. Lil Nas X first showed us how to style a snakeskin suit on the red carpet in 2019, wearing a blue two-piece with a black mesh top underneath. It’s taken a while, but the trend has finally made

its way into womenswear – and for a more relaxed take on the look, choose brightly coloured snakeskin prints. Or opt for monochrome if you want a dressier vibe.
IN SEPARATES… Wearing a full suit can sometimes feel a bit formal, but if you separate the two pieces you’re basically doubling up on potential outfits in your wardrobe. Tailoring can add a bit of effortless cool to any look – so either try tapered trousers with a plain T-shirt and a light knit over the top, or wear the blazer on its own with jeans. It’s a chance to play around with the items you’ve already got in your closet, creating whole new looks to suit how you’re feeling on a given day. J U LY 2 0 2 2 6 9

The hottest design trends Pochette armchair by B&B Italia
Yves sofa by Porada
I
f we’ve learned anything in the past few years, it’s that our homes are places for selfexpression and experimentation as well as retreat and sanctuary, the modern interior both exciting and full of life as well as a place to relax and unwind in. The new launches at this year’s Salone del Mobile – Milan’s fashionable furniture fair – echoed these dual desires; colour hovered around the natural end of the spectrum occasionally interrupted with flashes of more vivacious pigments; forms were sculptural yet soft; and materials channelled the organic as well as exaggerating and playing with it. Chapins’ edit of the top trends is a show and tell of the materials, colours, shapes and functions that will come to define the modern home over the next year.
ORGANIC OBJECTS After taking solitude in nature for so long, we continue to seek to recreate it in our homes via organic shapes, the imperfect and hints at natural intervention. Nature and the implication of time are quietly introduced, pieces created to look like manufacture never happened – did they grow out in the wilderness? Shapes have an accidental feel like they have slowly evolved and perfection is something left behind long ago. Top Pick: Yves sofa by Porada A dainty take on a classic bean sofa, Yves by G. & O. Buratti for Porada has a charismatic a grownon-a-stalk-in-the-garden shape, a reminder of the power of the organic. Comprised only of calming curves, its matching pouf neatly nestles into the front of the crescent like an oversized seed.
INSIDE OUT The outdoors is increasingly becoming an extension of our walled-in living areas, spaces to be used routinely and habitually, so it was no surprise to see a bevy of renowned Italian brands stepping into the fresh air and launching incredibly chic all-weather collections. With these new pieces, design comes first and being able to withstand the rain is a quietly integrated feature that’s barely noticeable. Top Pick: The A’mare collection by Edra The A’mare collection by Jacopo Foggini which includes tables, chairs, armchairs, a bench and a sunbed, is designed around a love of the ocean, comprised from flexible polycarbonate slats which embody solidified slices of water. Their vivid turquoise colouring playfully catches and throws light, transporting the user onto a sparkling sea, design that is both utterly minimalist and an audacious statement. 8 2 J U LY 2 0 2 2

for 2022 and beyond Leggera chair by Cassina
EARTH TONES Physically digging into the immersed-in-nature trend, the neutral hues set to dominate this year are drawn from the ground, spanning pale shades of sand, soft mid-tone clays, and red-tinted terracotta. Prompting images of bare feet on beaches and hands plunged into the earth, these colours are about connection to the elements, warm neutrals that are livelier and more varied than a classic beige. Top Pick: Pochette armchair by B&B Italia B&B Italia’s Pochette by Piero Lissoni combines unfixed cushions and a low-slung shape with a creamy grey-ish nude leather which is wrapped around the tubular frame, a shade easier to live with and more laid back than white or ivory but with a similar crisp, chic impression. In-Between dining table by Lema
embraces neutral shades as well as a vibrant watery palette for its move into the outdoors. The renowned seat’s original slimline frame is replicated in garden-proof stainless steel, the colourful option a peppy turquoise-tinted green with optional upholstery in blue recycled polypropylene, the makings of a spirited summery classic.
SCULPTURAL BASES
SEA SHADES Summoning visions of the ocean disappearing into the horizon, Mediterranean mornings and treasurelike pieces of sea glass, this season’s statement hues are gloriously fresh and enlivening, radiating the promise of sunnier climes and (like us all) calling out for adventure. Hovering between hazy shades of blue-tinged sage and turquoise tones, these are introverted colours which harmonise easily with their surroundings, tranquil and inobtrusive while radiating vitality and joy. Top Pick: Leggera chair by Cassina Gio Ponti’s 1952-designed icon the Leggera
These days, tables are all about looking down. The contemporary table is leaning heavily on leg work, its supports pieces of art in their own right able to sit in the home as standalone sculptural objects. Adding an element of surprise and delight to the dining room, each artful base feels like a discovery, something earned and a small secret waiting to be uncovered. Top Pick: In-Between dining table by Lema In-Between by Ximi Li asks the diner to focus on the space between the base’s forms and consider instead the chunky segments of air formed by the irregular legs. Arranged in a staggered position, the flattened supports stand apart, almost meeting in the middle, the rounded marble top drawing them together and making the decorative piece whole. We look forward to welcoming these fresh Milanese launches – and more! – to our curated collection of designer furniture, lighting and accessories both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London over the coming months.

Summer at Cult Furniture
T
he Big Summer Sale has landed at Cult. Instead of the usual sale graphics, you might find floating around on sites this year, as you may have noticed, Cult has pulled out all the stops and is breaking new boundaries. To learn more about Cults Big Summer Sale, we sat down with Becka, our Creative photography & Styling Manager, to discuss further... Talk us through the initial concept and story behind the Summer Sale campaign? Instead of the usual graphic sale campaigns we see everywhere, we wanted to push new boundaries for Cult with our “Fashion + Floral” inspired Summer Sale campaign. We chose to shoot this in an artistic setting with a model to breathe some fun energy into the campaign and to connect with customers. As the leading Creative Photography & Styling Manager, tell us what makes this one different from the rest? Aside from shooting with a model for the first time (which was incredibly fun!) we produced our first social media campaign video, which allowed
8 4 J U LY 2 0 2 2
the high energy on set to be conveyed to our social audience. Where did you source/ gain inspiration for the styling, theme & photoshoot? When you think of Spring / Summer what comes to mind? Flowers, meadows, even freshly cut grass is up there! Our marketing team briefed in ‘red’ to convey the feeling of a sale, so it stemmed from there (mind the pun). In terms of inspiration the likes of Pinterest, Instagram, various interior and fashion magazines were all very instrumental in building the art direction and final look. Lastly, tell us your highlights from the days you spent shooting and working to bring everything together? The shoot itself was really high energy with such a positive feeling. The real highlights were watching the silliness of our lovely model Terri forward rolling over sofas and singing into floor lamps turned into a strong campaign - we even had a furry visitor sneak into the studio to come and say hello. cultfurniture.com

permission is not required. With many still working from home, garden offices are still in high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multifunctional space”, adds Luke Dejahang. The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home.
