NEW HYBRID CHARTER MARKET TO BE LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER
H
istoric St Albans Charter Market is to be relaunched in a new hybrid form involving a mixture of traditional stalls and gazebos. Stalls in the City’s famous blue and yellow colours will provide the Market’s central core while similarly branded gazebos will be set up nearby. The aim is to create a harmonious look with some traders being allowed to bring their own gazebos and food trucks to positions on the fringes. St Albans City and District Council manages the twice-weekly Market and has been examining its future following the pandemic. It has decided on the hybrid format after consulting with traders, shoppers and other interested groups with the Market relaunching on Wednesday 7 September. Councillor Robert Donald, Chair of the Regeneration and Business Committe, said: “I’m absolutely delighted we are finally able to push forward with a hybrid Market.

“We’ll now have the best of both worlds – the reassuring sight of the return of stalls in uniform St Albans heritage colours in St Peters Street together with gazebos.” To provide the hybrid Market, 80 new stalls will be purchased by the Council to replace the current ones which are run-down while 35 gazebos have already been bought. One or two trailers, required to transport the new equipment from storage to the Market site, will be acquired to replace the 16 vehicles that were previously used. Tenders are being sought for a contractor to put up and dismantle the Market stalls and gazebos. This task was undertaken by the Council’s own workforce before the pandemic when only gazebos brought by the traders were allowed to reduce the risk of COVID contamination. Councillor Donald added: “Our Charter Market dates back centuries. It is one of our City’s great attractions and we are determined to ensure it has a sustainable and exciting future ahead of it.”

series of never-before-seen images of the royal family taken by members of the public are now on show at Kensington Palace . Snapshots include a close-up of a smiling Duchess of Cambridge receiving a posy of flowers after the Sandringham Christmas service in 2014. Also on display is a black and white image of the Prince of Wales on horseback during a polo match in Oxford in the 1980s. The photographs form part of Historic Royal Palaces’ Life Through A Royal Lens exhibition, which also includes work by renowned photographers Norman Parkinson, Rankin, Annie Leibovitz and Cecil Beaton. And through sisterly squabbles and tragic losses, the sisters discover that growing up is sometimes very hard to do.

Allison and Connery (whose ‘Scissor Sisters’ was a smash hit at OVO’s recent Maltings Theatre season) have written a new script in collaboration with playwright Sophie Swithenbank to bring a new and modern outlook to the story while retaining the novel’s enormous, global appeal. They’ve added live music, movement and physical theatre to bring the story to life. Says Stephanie Allison: “Little Women has resonated with both of us for years; the themes of family, love and coming of age Alcott explored over a century ago still exist today. At the time Little Women was rare in that the story centred around women and gave space to their journey; although modern expectations for women have changed a great deal often they’re still expected to occupy the traditional role of mother and caregiver. As Jo and her sisters navigate growing up, the challenges they face and overcome are ones many of our audience will recognise or have been through.” Fans around the world will know that Alcott

wrote two separate books: Little Women and Good Wives. While she wrote movingly and entertainingly about the lives of her heroines, particularly Jo, she was eventually pressurised by her publishers to marry everyone off! Adds Amy Connery: “We can’t help but wonder how Little Women might have ended had Alcott not been under such pressure to marry Jo off – it led us to adjust the relationship between Jo March and Professor Bhaer. We were also really interested in the strictly structured society where every step was planned out for women in general and in our production we explore how the March sisters challenge what society expects of them as they grow into women.”. ROTHAMSTED MANOR, HARPENDEN

he Rothamsted Estate in Harpenden, Hertfordshire is home to Rothamsted Manor. A beautiful Grade 1 listed building that has recently been reopened as a venue. The first record of the Rothamsted estate was made in 1212 when it was owned by Henry Gubion. It was bought in 1623 by Anne Wittewronge - the widow of Jacob Wittewronge - on behalf of her son John, who was then 4 years old. John became Lord of the Manor of Rothamsted in 1639 and the estate continued to be passed through the family until John Bennet Lawes (founder of Rothamsted Experimental Station, now Rothamsted Research) was born in the house on 28th December 1814. Sir John Bennet Lawes and Sir Henry Gilbert together developed a fundamental understanding of plant nutrition and produced the world’s first commercial chemical fertilizers. The house, whilst used predominantly as a family home since records began, was requisitioned for the use of the military in WWII and became a listening post, recording and feeding messages to Bletchley Park for decoding. After the war it was converted into accommodation for staff and visitors to Rothamsted until 2020, when the ground floor was opened as a venue for the community, where guests can enjoy afternoon teas, murder mystery evenings, or book the venue for a private function. Filled with impressive features that have remained largely untouched since the 1600s, the Manor will impress guests and provide plenty of inspiration for any event. The external gardens are taken care of by the onsite grounds team and are currently being prepared for another summer season. The Chef and his team have been creating some wonderful new menus with local suppliers, to create a truly unique experience. Duke of Cambridge receives ‘winning kiss’ from Kate after charity polo victory By Tony Jones

he Duke of Cambridge received a winning kiss from his wife after his polo team were victorious in a recent fundraising tournament that netted £1 million for the couple’s charities. William and Kate kissed on both cheeks as the duchess presented the prizes after the Royal Charity Polo Cup staged in Berkshire, just a few miles from Windsor Castle, at the Castle Ground at Guards Polo Club. The couple even brought their new black cocker spaniel Orla to the event, and the dog was seen running around enjoying the summer sunshine. When the duchess presented the duke with an imitation Samurai warrior’s helmet – from the Japanese sponsors of the tournament – the duke said “wow” and returned to the podium with his fellow players from the US Polo Assn team. Playing with the duke was James Harper, who has been named as captain of the England team for the match against Uruguay for the Coronation Cup at Guards later in July. During the presentations, the MC described William as playing a defensive role with his team who beat the BP Polo and Monterosso Vikings teams. Kate handed out the helmet trophies and other awards before posing with all the players for a group photograph. Organisers said the event had raised a million

pounds for good causes like London’s Air Ambulance Charity, the homeless organisation the Passage and the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. Ahead of the polo William and Kate mingled with the guests and the duchess was spotted stroking her dog as she held a drink in her hand. The Cambridges showed a rare moment of public affection when they put their arms around each other as they walked from the polo ground after the prize-giving ceremony. At their feet was Orla running around clearly enjoying the freedom but it is likely the dog was kept away from polo ponies who were stabled nearby. The same polo event in 2021 raised £500,000 but the extra support of donors this year doubled the funds for good causes, such as the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, the Anna Freud Centre, a mental health charity for children, and the Foundling Museum.

From royals to footballers, celebs have been out in force to watch the tennis this year. By Prudence Wade

ll eyes have been on the tennis, as Wimbledon marked a triumphant return to full crowds. And yet we’ve also been keeping a close look at the stands, which were typically full of celebrities keen to show off their fanciest tennis-appropriate outfits… While the all-white dress code only applies to the tennis players, some celebrities have used it as inspiration for their courtside looks. Sienna Miller gave her signature Noughties Boho style a 2022 update, wearing a white lacy dress given an edge with a chunky black belt and snakeskin shoes. Lashana Lynch also got in on the all-white action, while drawing upon another big trend of the season: crochet. Wearing Ralph Lauren, 64 AUGUST 2022
she paired her crocheted midi dress with a sharp tailored blazer and sporty trainers. There are some famous faces you always know you’re going to see at Wimbledon, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge firmly fall into that category. Kate is a well-known tennis fan – and patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club – and she re-wore an Alessandra Rich tea dress for the occasion, in a bright blue with white polka dots. David Beckham is another celebrity who attends Wimbledon almost every year – normally with his mother, Sandra. Beckham’s outfit was typically classy and fashion-forward this year: a perfectly tailored Ralph Lauren suit,
with a double-breasted brown blazer, cream trousers and a striped shirt. Gemma Chan channelled sporty chic for her Wimbledon outfit, wearing a green checkerboard minidress from Louis Vuitton, paired with a handbag that had a bright yellow coin purse attached to look like a tennis ball. The brand’s website says the green colour of the dress “nods to the manicured tennis courts of Wimbledon” – making it a no-brainer for the occasion. Gugu Mbatha-Raw made a strong case for trousers at Wimbledon, wearing a chic and breezy navy twopiece. Rose Ayling-Ellis enjoyed a day in the royal box with her mother, wearing a pastel floral minidress from RIXO with a white blazer over the top. Florals proved a powerful
draw for many at Wimbledon, with Mary Berry wearing a classic white dress, amped up with hot pink accessories. Like the Duchess of Cambridge, Katherine Jenkins went down the tea dress route – wearing a blue LK Bennett dress in a cornflower print, which the brand says is “inspired by the English countryside”. Some celebs are such big tennis fans, they aren’t content with going to Wimbledon just once – and this year, Vogue editor Anna Wintour was one of those people. This look is peak Wintour, with a long embroidered coat and her signature shades. Wintour’s outfit for her second appearance was a bit more unexpected, with a brown leather jacket giving her look more of an edge – but the trusty big sunglasses remained. Tom Daley brought a bit of sartorial sunshine to Wimbledon this year, watching the tennis with his husband Dustin Lance Black in a bright yellow suit paired with a pale pink tie. errari has unveiled its new Autumn/ Winter 22-23 campaign, translating the codes of speed and performance into a series of exclusive contents. The aesthetic narrative of the fashion show is reflected in the campaign design, which glorifies the looks and the people at its centre, with the aim of pursuing and celebrating Rocco Iannone’s creative vision. The images represent the new Ferrari Men and Women’s collection through the lenses of technological innovation and experimentation. The campaign explores the product by evoking the hybridation of forms and materials; the images themselves feature holographic effects where the subject seems to be blurred or in motion. A subtle, magnetic charm pervades the futuristic atmospheres, blending the concrete quality of tailoring with the high definition of the electrical, digital world, and expressing the same attitude of speed embodied by the winter wardrobe. Lines and borders get fixed or manipulated to bring out the play of light and shade in the background, while the elegance of textures and silhouettes stay dynamically impressed in the foreground. The campaign video highlights the creative bond between fashion and technology, through the animation technique of 3D morphing. Frames, images, iconic elements and design symbols merge to make up a bold, multidimensional message, created by the collision and harmonic convergence of physical, abstract and virtual universes. The new campaign celebrates Ferrari spirit and style, emphasizing the key role played by sartorial elements, glossy finishes and fine, responsible materials – including natural fabrics and organic recycled fibres, perfectly aligned with the brand’s

sustainable approach. Remarkable sections in the collection feature distinctive graphic prints derived from thermal scanner grids, from a hologram of the logo and an enlarged photo of technical filaments. Additional key themes of the season include a macro camouflage pattern, obtained by deconstructing and overlapping the Prancing Horse, the suits and the ‘looping’ knitwear inspired by the drivers’ uniform, interwoven carbon fibre and black crystals embellishments. VERPAN Re-introducing Verpan’s Easy sofa, one of Verner Panton’s most distinctive designs. the beach, in the woods, in the park, or just down at the bottom of the garden”. Even though Meller is all about preparation, that doesn’t mean you have to do anything incredibly elaborate – “Even eating a cheese sandwich at the end of the pier in the rain” can be exactly what you want.
Build up an appetite
T
hinking about going al fresco? It’s all about preparation. Gill Meller knows a thing or two about al fresco dining – so much so that he’s dedicated his latest book to cooking and eating outside. And one of the most accessible ways to enjoy food outside is with a picnic, where you can precook everything and cart it to your favourite location. “One of the most lovely eating memories I have is heading out on a very cold winter’s afternoon up onto the cliffs, just east of where I live in Dorset – and having a thermos full of lentil soup with Alice, my wife,” Meller reminisces. “Having this warming, comforting homely nourishment in the form of a simple soup just makes you feel safe – it’s like a reassuring blanket.” If you really want to nail a picnic – whatever the weather – these are Meller’s top tips…
Prepare properly Planning what you’re going to cook will save you a last-minute scrabble for picnic food. Meller suggests choosing “recipes that are cooked inside in advance – conventional cooking, but with an aim of transporting those wonderful things, and those delicious recipes to a whole new place – wherever you choose to enjoy it, whether it’s on 86 AUGUST 2022
“I love that idea of being able to pack up something fantastic to eat, heading out the door and building up an appetite by exerting yourself – whether it’s swimming in the sea, or hiking up a hill – then rewarding yourself with the food you’ve prepared,” he says. “It’s just the most lovely thing – I enjoy that food and outdoor connection. You’re doing something that feels slightly unusual, in that you’ve made something, you’ve taken it with you and you’re eating it. It’s not how we tend to live conventionally, it’s special and becomes a treat.”
Match your food to the weather The picnic chapter in Meller’s new book is broken up into seasonal sections, because no one really wants to take lentil soup out with them on the hottest day of the year. “If you’re cooking seasonally, you tend to be cooking with ingredients that fit that time of year. So on a hot, sunny day, you’ll probably be preparing fresh vegetables, salads, fruit, and light, clean, crisp things. Whereas in the cooler autumn months, you’ll have a different approach to the picnic food you make – and indeed, the food you eat on a daily basis.”

Get the Look: JAPANDI TREND
Sam Wylie-Harris talks to an interior design expert about how to work the Japandi trend in your home.
J
apandi décor style is one of the most popular interior trends right now – racking up no less than 56.5 million mentions across Instagram and TikTok, according to industrial-inspired home accessories and lighting brand, Industville. Not yet familiar? As the term suggests, Japandi is a mix of Japanese and Scandi style – a combination with endless appeal. “While geographically, Japan and Scandinavia may be worlds apart, when it comes to design, the two countries are synonymous with creating interiors rooted in simplicity, comfort, neutral colours and natural materials,” says Alysha Alli, who heads up the interior design team at Redrow homebuilders. “Together, the two cultures have led to the recent creation of the now universally loved interior trend, Japandi.” Illustrating a beautiful marriage of East meets West, where Scandinavian’s cosiness blends seamlessly with Japan’s minimalism, Alli says Japandi style is growing in popularity with homeowners of all ages throughout the UK.

“While the trend has been around since 2016, its popularity grew throughout the pandemic, and still has an enduring effect,” Alli explains. “Homeowners continue to create a functional yet welcoming interior that’s perfectly suited to a healthy balance of work and home life.” Scandinavian homes, she says, tend to prioritise comfortable interiors that are warm and inviting and deeply rooted in the countries’ concept of ‘hygge’ (cosiness), while Japanese design adopts the countries’ ‘wabi-sabi’ philosophy, which originates from Zen Buddhism. “The term refers to embracing imperfections and finding beauty in the natural, unpolished world,” notes Alli. “This fusion of two cultural beliefs has today created a design that’s loved for its welcoming and warm minimalist aesthetic.”
HOW CAN YOU GET THE JAPANDI LOOK? Neutral colour palette “Earthy tones and muted colours are key to recreating the Japandi look,” says Alli. “Sage and
muted greens, paired with watered-down greys, pale ochres, beiges and sandy tones should be top of your Japandi colour palette.” Scandi interiors can often favour clear whites, but Alli recommends replacing this with a light stone, beige or fawn tone, to avoid your interior feeling more Nordic than Japandi. “While Nordic design favours lighter colours, Japanese interiors can often appear more daring by introducing richer colours through design accessories. For a truly Japandi look, take note from Japan’s approach to colour by adding a contrasting colour to your neutral palette, such as pale pink or charcoal grey, either through soft furnishings such as cushion covers or throws, artwork or lighting,” she suggests. These small colour additions will add a richness to your interior that stops the room from feeling muted and restricted to similar colours, she explains. “A key thing to remember is that Japandi interiors should always blend harmoniously together, where every item is given equal attention,” says Alli. “So any contrasting colours should not stray too far from your neutral palette, but rather as a pop of colour.”
Sustainable furnishings “Both Japanese and Scandinavia interiors use wood as their dominate interior material – but do so in very different ways,” observes Alli. “Scandinavian-influenced interiors favour a rustic approach, where the wood is often left pale and untreated. Whereas in Japanese-inspired interiors, the wood is more likely to be stained and

darker, creating a much richer effect.” Don’t be afraid of opting for both, she says. Although the wood may be different, the natural colours remain in the same palette, so will still create that desired harmonious effect, while adding a little intrigue to the room that’s rich in an artisan feel. “Other authentic, natural materials, such as bamboo, rattan, cotton or hemp, offer an easy way to introduce texture and a natural element into your interior,” Alli adds. She says eco-friendly materials are perfect in the bedroom too, which should be rich in nature and free of tech for a good night’s sleep. “And perfect for introducing that unpolished look synonymous with ‘wabi-sabi’,” Alli notes. “Assorted warm metals also work beautifully with these natural materials and provide a contrast in texture.” Where both Scandi and Japanese interiors share a love of nature and house plants, as Alli points out, Japandi interior leans towards fewer but bigger plants, where the larger plant is used as a focal point in the room. “Other ways to bring the outdoors in can be through adding branches to large ceramics for a vase vignette, which offer a sustainable homemade accessory.”
Minimalist cosiness To ensure you strike the balance between Japan’s minimalism and Scandi’s cosiness, Alli says: “Adopting a minimalist approach by decluttering will allow your home’s architectural features and clean lines to shine. “Decluttering is an easy way to create the illusion of a minimalist interior – and can quickly transform forgotten or previously hidden elements, such as antique statement vases or ornaments, into focal pieces,” she adds. Use the lines of your shelves or bookcases themselves as a decoration, she suggests; don’t obscure them with trailing plants or soft furnishings. “The overall look should be one of continuity – blending shapes and sleek functionality – that remains rich in personality through your ornaments or books.” AUGUST 2022 97
