Will you be a hero for St Francis? T
he Hospice of St Francis is bringing its first ever largescale event to Berkhamsted and is encouraging everyone to unleash their alter-ego at its brand new KAPOW Superhero Challenge on Sunday 8th July at Ashlyns School. This 5k fun-filled obstacle course, set in the beautiful school grounds, is made up of a range of giant inflatables to climb, duck, dodge, slide and run around. There are slides, mazes, tunnels and so much more - tackle hurdles and barriers in the ‘Dip n Duck’, keep your balance in the bumpy ‘Alternater’, biff the bouncing bollards to bash your way through the ‘Biff Baff ’ and scramble your way through ‘The Mangle’. Fran Martin, Head of Events at the Hospice, said: “This event is going to be so much fun! It’s time to ditch the office suit, pull on your outfit and transform into your inner superhero. Whether you come as Spiderman, Batman, Captain America or a Power Ranger, fancy dress is absolutely encouraged! “KAPOW is perfect for groups, so assemble your very own superhero squad of Wonder Women and Supermen – there are bound to be some going undetected at work, the gym or in your family – so seek them out and all become heroes by supporting The Hospice of St Francis. Places are limited and expected to sell out quickly so all superheroes are urged to sign up now.” Fancy dress is not essential, but what better reason is there to dress up like the superhero you are? Whether you don the full lycra outfit, or throw on a classic Superman t-shirt, all super-wear is welcome! Tickets are £25 for an adult (aged 16 and over) and £15 for a child.

Big Day at Berkhamsted An educated venue choice
Local couple Matt and Sinead explain why choosing to celebrate their wedding at Berkhamsted School made their big day one to remember. Thanks to Harry and Meghan’s recent celebration, weddings are once again making headlines, and ensuring your own big day is as special as possible has never been more important. One of the key decisions to make when planning your special day is choosing a venue. With many big hotels fully booked for years, it can be a challenge to find somewhere that is both picturesque and a little different.
26 JUNE 2018
M
att and Sinead Earles faced this dilemma themselves when they were booking their wedding last summer. Luckily, they discovered that they could both get married at and enjoy their reception within the stunning grounds of Berkhamsted School. The couple, who are about to celebrate their one-year anniversary, took time out to talk to us about the fantastic experience. Matt and Sinead both grew up in Luton, attending the same senior school before reuniting years later at a community event in 2012. Romance blossomed and in 2015 the pair got engaged and started to think about their special day. Matt knew he had chosen his soulmate when Sinead suggested they postpone their wedding when he was called up to represent Great Britain in the World Duathlon Championships in Australia in 2017. Matt refused, but her commitment to him only made their love stronger. “Matt is my absolute best friend and my rock. I have never met anyone with such tenacity and passion,” says Sinead. “Although we are complete opposites, we absolutely complement each other and we’re both incredibly passionate and ambitious people.” With the big day set for August 2017, they began the exciting task of organising the celebration. As the couple both work in the events industry, they knew they needed to follow a few important guidelines. “Work out your minimum guest numbers and absolute budgets before you start to plan,” advises Sinead. “Be clear about certain things you don’t want to compromise on and those that you would be willing to change or drop.” The venue choice, however, was causing some difficulties. Luckily, following a tip from a friend, they contacted the events team at Berkhamsted School, toured the grounds and immediately knew they had found their dream venue. Once we had seen at the school we just fell in love with it,” explains Matt. “It’s so atmospheric and beautiful and the school grounds are just gorgeous.
The wedding reception in the airy, spacious Deans Hall at Berkhamsted School was an added bonus. “The school were amazing from start to finish,” agrees Sinead. “Nothing was too much trouble. We booked the school’s catering company and some of the facilities staff for the wedding breakfast and the food was incredible. We simply booked local bar staff for the drinks reception and bar and we were good to go.” “All our family and friends loved the venue. The buildings’ history and architecture really stood out and people were genuinely taken aback with how stunning it was.” The beautiful photos from their wedding day were taken by a friend of the couple, Aleksandra Warchol Photography www.awarchol.com and the couple’s favourite photo of the day was of them standing under the cloisters at Berkhamsted School. Matt’s passion for music led to them booking award-winning Amersham Acapella to sing in the gallery within the chapel as they entered. They also enjoyed the Revellers Steel Band performing outside Deans Hall on the grass quad during the drinks reception; and, finally, The Craicheads band provided the evening’s entertainment as a celebration of Sinead’s Irish heritage. “Our wedding was everything we wanted it to be from start to finish and was the best day of our lives,” says Sinead. “It was definitely testament to the stunning location and fantastic support staff at Berkhamsted School.“ Are you looking for a unique venue to celebrate your special day? From the traditional surroundings of Old Hall and the timeless grandeur of Deans Hall and the beautiful green lawn in the Quad, all at Berkhamsted Boys and the charming romantic marquee in our Walled Garden at Berkhamsted PrePrep, weddings at Berkhamsted School can offer a venue for all occasions. Taking time to focus on wellbeing On Wednesday 2 May 2018, B P Collins hosted its first complimentary ‘Wellbeing’ evening, which centred around social, mental and physical health. who is the founder of Health with Food, also spoke about the healing power of food which helped her to recover from breast cancer and the side effects of chemotherapy. She described her journey from eating meat to becoming a vegan, whilst not compromising on taste. “Processed food and stress are the scourge of society, which can contribute to the onset of chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, IBS, cancer, arthritis and obesity.”
Guests were offered complimentary taster massages from The Bodhi Tree Spa to feel the de-stressing benefits of massage. Additionally, they were given the opportunity to speak to experts about how to take better care of themselves and maintain a lifestyle that encourages happiness, health and comfort. A selection of canapés and refreshments, courtesy of Cashew Catering, were served throughout the evening alongside food demonstrations and free consultations with wellbeing experts. Guest speakers included Olympic Gold medallist Adrian Moorhouse, who discussed mindfulness and the psychology of wellbeing. Drawing on past experience as an Olympic athlete, and now leading a successful HR consultancy (Lane4) since retiring from competitive swimming, Adrian explored the link between mindfulness and performance, and how leaders can develop mindful practice.
Adrian explains: “There is a growing mainstream interest in mindfulness. With its roots in Eastern philosophical traditions and application to Western psychology, mindfulness is increasingly being applied in sport and business leadership to enhance well-being and performance. “For athletes, it brings improved and sustained performance and for leaders it enhances their effectiveness in decision making, relationship management, work life balance and sustainable leadership.” Adrian explained to guests what the concept of mindfulness means by quoting Jon Kabat Zinn: “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.” He also challenged any misconceptions around mindfulness by emphasising that it is: “Activating your senses, sharpening awareness, living in the moment and being effective rather than zoning out or emptying or dulling the mind.”
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way” Adrian concluded his talk by offering helpful advice on how to develop mindful practice: • To help you be ‘in the moment’, draw your attention to the thing that is always with you – your breath. • Turn up fully giving all your attention, without distraction or judgement, to the person or task before you. • Generally our minds flick from the past to the future, we ruminate, speculate, judge and evaluate. Start noticing how your mind flicks and when it ‘runs away with you’ and gently bring yourself to the present. • Adopt a ‘beginners mind’ to see a situation freshly, as if for the first time Nutrition and lifestyle coach Johanne O’Dowd, 28 JUNE 2018
Johanne concluded her talk with some key advice: “Eat unprocessed food, eat together, reduce your stress and surround yourself with family, good friends and move.” Throughout the evening, Johanne created healthy drinks and delicious food using only raw ingredients for guests to taste. Carla Pasco Jones, owner of The Bodhi Tree Spa, also spoke about the importance of taking time out for self-care. Unlike many other day spas, Carla’s philosophy on beauty is that “it’s so much more than skin deep. Scheduling regular ‘me time’ contributes both mentally and aesthetically to your overall wellness.” The Bodhi Tree Spa offers a range of complementary therapies, such as Kinesiology, Reflexology and Reiki in addition to its spa treatments as Carla believes it’s about taking a holistic approach and taking care of yourself from the inside as well as out. Carla wrapped up the talks by touching on mindfulness and explained: “Just 5 minutes of being in the present moment each day can help to restore balance.” Gina Connell, B P Collins, adds: “B P Collins already takes the duty of care of its employees and clients very seriously - we value them highly. This is why we’ve decided to host our first Wellbeing event. We hope our guests found it an informative, inspiring and relaxing evening.” www.bpcollins.co.uk

Taking the kids abroad? Guidance for separated parents at holiday time
The summer holidays are almost upon us. But these happy times can often cause animosity and conflict between separated or divorced parents; especially if a holiday abroad is on the cards. Family lawyers at Royds Withy King highlight some of the issues parents should think about.
T
aking your children on holiday abroad if you are separated or divorced can become a legal minefield if you don’t follow the right procedures. Many people don’t know that, depending on your circumstances, you may need to get consent of anyone with ‘parental responsibility’ or even a court order to do so. Parental responsibility, or ‘PR’, covers the legal rights, duties and responsibilities that parents have for their children. Biological mothers automatically have PR, but biological fathers don’t. Fathers who were married to the child’s mother either before or after the child’s birth do have PR, as do unmarried fathers of children born after 1st December 2003 if they are named on the child’s birth certificate. The position is more complicated for same sex couples. If you have a child arrangements order in place which specifies where your child lives, then the parent with whom your child usually lives with can take them abroad for up to 28 days without needing consent. As you can see the details can be complicated so if you are in any doubt, you should take specialist advice. Planning ahead can make things easier Leaving discussions about holidays until the last minute will inevitably complicate matters. If you think it is going to be difficult agreeing arrangements, consider contacting a mediation

service which may help you iron out any potential areas of dispute. Booking a holiday on the assumption that your plans will be agreed when you know there is a likelihood they won’t be is unlikely to get things off to a good start. Be prepared to share details of where you’re planning to stay, contact phone numbers and information about travel arrangements. If it is information that you would want to have, then it is reasonable for the other parent to ask for the same information. Court proceedings should be a last resort. They can be costly both financially and emotionally. If you do have to involve the courts they will look at what the court considers being in your children’s best interests. If there is a concern as to whether children will be brought back from a holiday it may be that there are safeguards that can be put in place to make sure this happens. Take advice if you’re in any way unsure as to your position. Cost effective, pragmatic and expert help could save you spending significant amounts on contested proceedings and may help you achieve an agreement without the need for court. Royds Withy King is a City law firm with a local presence. Our Family team are based in Buckinghamshire and the home counties as are many of our clients. ere comes summer! – With the arrival of June brings the excitement and anticipation of balmy days ahead. It is also the time to celebrate the English Strawberry season – although the supermarkets have featured them on their shelves for a while June is the month when the Pick your own Farm starts to flourish. What better way than to spend a summer’s day out strawberry picking for delicious berries. Look out for Sweet Eve and Eve Delight, high in natural sugar with a perfumed aroma, English Rose for its orange zest flavour and Jubilee for a good
all-rounder. The peak season runs from June to July but if there is good weather the English strawberry can still be very much enjoyed up until the end of September. The best thing about strawberries is that they can be made into a spectacular dessert, eaten straight from the punnet for picnics or just simply with cream or ice cream. Or as here if you have a glut of the strawberries from the garden can be transformed into a smooth, refreshing chilled soup served with the tart creaminess of the sorbet – a perfect cooling dessert for a warm day. A Visit To The Giggling Squid, Beaconsfield L
ondon end, Beaconsfield old Town has become the most recent edition to the ever growing restaurant group, The Giggling Squid. From the front, what appears as a regular building hides within the truly inspirational and unique design that has become familiar, yet different every time, of this highly regarded eatery. A flourishing chain of restaurants it may be, but as now common place within this group, Beaconsfield’s Giggling Squid has the feel of an independent. The attention to detail is second to none and the eating space – or spaces – offer such variations, I am sure you could eat here at least five times and feel as if you are in a different restaurant each time. So, we ate as a family on our visit to Giggling Squid. There was a selection to suit us all, and we shared a number of starters including the Sharing Platter consisting of hand-cut pork grilled n skewers, salt and pepper squid ( a favourite with everyone!), Thai chicken wings and vegetable spring rolls. The sharing platter is designed for two so in addition we tantalised our taste buds with the chicken satay and yes, an additional portion of the salt and pepper squid ( It is on the menu as a GS

favourite and it soon became one of ours too!). We had a variety of different dipping sauces with this selection which was great as they varied in heat and flavour and suited us all. So after savouring the delights of the starters we moved on to the mains. Two members of our group just couldn’t resist the sound of the Pork Ribs in a homemade, three flavour sauce. Served with Morning Glory and Tenderstem broccoli the flavour was well spiced, not too hot, but with a kick. A prawn Massaman Curry certainly packed a punch, with the flavours of the sauce simply oozing out. My favourite, a dish called ‘Fishing Village’ which was a mixed seafood in a red curry sauce rounded up with coconut milk. An abundance of delightful seafood this dish really hit the spot! There were a number of delectable desserts to choose from, the Molten Chocolate Dessert won hands down twice (between us – we were so full!). Chocolate heaven to finish off a perfectly lovely meal. We spotted whilst there that they do some fantastic lunchtime deals on set menus, we will be back soon to try them out. Throughout the meal the staff were attentive without being overbearing, advisory on the menu, friendly and welcoming. A great atmosphere, interesting surroundings – no wonder The Giggling Squid are a growing chain. If you’ve not been, be sure to try them out. www.gigglingsquid.com. 01494 730919

Turkish restaurant Chanak brings an abundance of Mediterranean flavours to Bourne End, Bucks
B
ourne End in Buckinghamshire and the surrounding areas have welcomed Chanak with open arms. The new Turkish restaurant is proving beyond doubt that there was a huge gap in the local market for the divine and diverse flavours on offer. We opted to dine mid-week, in a relaxed atmosphere giving us plenty of time to explore the tantalising tastes that Chanak delivers. Open to suggestion for our meal choices, I started with Hellim, grilled Cypriot cheese topped with basil sauce on a bed of leaves. This dish is a firm favourite of mine and I wasn’t disappointed. My friend chose King Prawns, pan fried and served with a ginger oyster sauce and a touch of garlic. Oozing with flavour , the prawns were already shelled (always a plus!) and served in a taco bowl. For mains my friend already knew that she would order the mixed Lamb Shish and Chicken Shish Kebab – I think she had either been there before or had inside information! We spoke to Turgut, the owner of Chanak who explained that they marinade the finest quality meat in a highly guarded secret recipe – it was delicious. The lamb was juicy, the flavoursome chicken was tender and moist. Served on a warm pitta with rice and salad this dish was beautifully presented with a taste that delivered in every bite. Such a healthy option too! As recommended by Turgut, my main was the Ottoman Lamb Shank. This slowly cooked dish was bejewelled in dates and chickpeas in a demi glaze sauce. On a bed of sautéed potatoes and rice the lamb fell from the bone with ease and simply melted in your mouth. The flavour was divine. The portion sizes at Chanak are considerable – to the point where neither of us could attempt much more than a coffee for afters. Safe to say, the

choices for desserts ranged from simple classics to Turkish pastries and an abundance in between. Chanak caters very well for all tastes, with range of seafood, pasta and vegetarian dishes. Children can enjoy smaller versions of the signature kebab mains and there are numerous sides to compliment all options. A spacious restaurant you can also enjoy the internal décor showcasing a selection of the most beautiful Turkish and Persian rugs adorning the walls. Planning Ahead: Wills and Care Costs
A
lthough my Wills clients continue to be mindful of Inheritance Tax, I am finding that increasingly, they are more concerned about longer-term care costs in the future and whether they will be able to leave an inheritance to their children. The background to this legitimate and understandable concern is that most people who find themselves in the position of requiring residential care will need to pay for that care themselves, unless they fall below the means-tested threshold of £23,500.00. Given the generally inflated house prices that prevail in this part of the country, anyone who owns even a modest property will be highly likely to have to fund their care costs themselves. In view of residential care costs in all but the most modest of care homes running to in excess of £1,000.00 per week, care costs can quickly swallow up all of our wealth and the inheritance we wanted to leave to our children, that we worked so hard to build up, has all but evaporated. Local authorities are alert to the simplistic solution of trying to give away our wealth before we go into care and they have put in place so-called “Deliberate Deprivation Rules”, whereby if you attempt to give away property or money in order to impoverish yourself and put the burden back on the LA to pay for your care, they will point to what you have given away and either claw back those gifts, or simply refuse to pay for your care. So, what are we to do? One solution is for married couples to use their wills to protect some of their joint wealth from being spent on care costs. The nuts and bolts of the arrangement would be for a married couple to draft their wills as follows:• On the first of them to pass away, instead of the matrimonial home passing outright to the surviving spouse, the half share belonging to the 38 JUNE 2018
deceased spouse passes into a form of trust • The terms of that trust could be that the surviving spouse can continue to live there (and remains responsible for outgoings), but the value of the half share belonging to first spouse to pass away remains ring-fenced within the trust • If the surviving spouse did then need to move into a care home and the house needed to be sold, only half of the value of the home need be put towards that spouse’s care costs – the remainder could be ring-fenced for (e.g.) the couple’s children It is possible (and relatively straightforward) to draft the wills so that the surviving spouse can downsize or otherwise move house and still maintain the asset protection provisions of the trust. Please get in touch with us to discuss how we can help draft wills that can help protect an inheritance for your family. England and has a 1:12 scale population of 3,000. Despite pressure to modernise, it has remained virtually unchanged: model steam trains chug around the village regardless of weather conditions and there has never been any problems with leaves on the track! The Bekonscot Fire Brigade has never gone on strike. Bekonscot offers a memorable family trip into a miniature wonderland of history. Bekonscot was the vision of Roland Callingham, an eccentric but philanthropic English gentleman whose model railway grew too large for his house. He, his gardener and staff rebuilt it outside in an adjoining meadow, complete with model houses and alpine gardens to complete the scene. As word spread, he opened it up to the public and over the years it grew, all profits going to various charities. A new purpose-built Education Centre provides an opportunity for visitors to find out more about the history and maintenance of Bekonscot and its many tiny inhabitants. The Centre also provides an opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience life during the 1930s through role play, displays and interactive exhibits. Bekonscot inspired a book (The Enchanted Village) by author Enid Blyton who lived locally for many years. The Mystery of smart casual “Neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style, especially as worn to conform to a particular dress code”
56 JUNE 2018
F
inding the meaning of “smart casual” can quickly become very confusing. The dictionary defines it as “neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style, especially as worn to conform to a particular dress code”. But what does that actually mean in practice and how should you dress smart casual? It is apparent that anything can be considered as ‘smart casual’ from rolled up chino’s to shorts (that seems too casual for me). A suit, open collared shirt and shoes also seem to fit the bill. So where are the boundaries? What should you be looking for when dressing smart casual? It is safe to say that what was considered smart casual 20 years ago was very different to what it is today. That is part of the joy of fashion, it refuses to stay the same, it is always moving forward. It will happily take influences from years past but it will always be ‘of its time’. One thing should never change when choosing your outfit, be comfortable in what you wear. Trust your own judgement because there is no right or wrong answer to this conundrum, nothing is set in stone. It is hard to guage the level of formality needed for any party or event with a smart casual dress code. One way of not being caught out by this social sudoko is by being able to change an outfit as you go. You may turn up to a party, you have jacket, shirt, cotton trousers and a nice pair of loafers for example. As you get there, you realise you are a little over dressed, but don’t worry. The situation can be resolved easily by simply taking off your jacket and rolling up your sleeves. It is always easier dressing an outfit down on the go than it is trying to dress one up. With that in mind the most important thing is that you enjoy every event you attend this summer. Don’t let the dress code hold you back. During your in-depth consultation, you have the opportunity to highlight any areas concerning you, whether these are skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation or rosacea, or worries about signs of ageing and a desire to rejuvenate your skin. Your skin will then be analysed by a state-of-the-art 3D digital skin imaging system called the VISIA, which takes surface and sub-surface images of your skin and develops a detailed complexion analysis.

Pigmentation Survival Guide Most of us enjoy sitting in the sunshine and there is plenty of evidence that sunlight can be good for us, but - like many things in life - too much of a good thing can be harmful. Over-exposure to the sun has been proven to contribute to many different skin and health conditions which, if left untreated and unprotected, can worsen. We spoke to skincare specialist, Petrina Nugawela to find out more about keeping our skin safe this Summer and how to combat tricky conditions such as Pigmentation and Melasma, so you can feel confident going make-up free when you’re pool-side.
W
hen skin cells are healthy skin will appear normal and even, but when skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, extra melanin is produced to help protect your skin which can result in pigmentation. Alternatively, the cells that produce pigment can be damaged which prevents melanin production and as a result, parts of your skin may turn lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation), both of which are recongised skin conditions. One of the reasons why the sun can be so harmful to your skin is due to Free Radicals. Free Radicals are molecules that cause damage to cells, they exist everywhere, but external factors such as pollution, sunlight and smoking triggers production. In skin, they cause visible signs of ageing by damaging collagen which can lead to wrinkles, dark marks, and pigmentation problems. It is also thought they could contribute to the development of some health conditions, including cancer. 64 JUNE 2018
For Melasma
“Free Radicals are molecules that cause damage to cells, they exist everywhere, but external factors such as pollution, sunlight and smoking triggers production”
Not all pigmentation stems from sun damage however, Melasma is a different sort of beast and requires a different approach. A form of pigmentation, this condition results from hormonal changes within your body which can be caused by myriad of reasons, from pregnancy to birth control and other medications, “it can appear at any age and affect men as well” says Petrina. While lasers are sometimes recommended for treating Melasma, Petrina notes that they can often make the pigmentation worse, she has seen great success treating Melasma using the right combination of skin care products, her go-to being the Obagi NuDerm range. “There’s no one best treatment for Melasma, needs are different based on the type and severity of skin damage, the pigment of your skin, and how much downtime you’re willing to tolerate. A complimentary consultation is always carried out beforehand to create a treatment plan tailored to you and then monitored closely”.
For Ongoing Protection
A surprising amount of people have some degree of sun damage, and often obtaining sun damage at a younger age can trigger Melasma to flare up later in life. “We offer a skin analysis at MBA which essentially shows people a true image of their skin and what sort of damage they have. This technology allows us to be even more precise with our treatment plans, gives patient’s a good insight into their problems areas, and where they should be focusing on”.
As we mentioned previously, Free Radicals (those skin-damaging molecules), are always around but the risk increases with factors such as pollution and sun exposure. Whilst limiting exposure to these triggering factors is key, you can go a step further to protect yourself with a topical Vitamin C. There are so many reasons why Vitamin C is a great addition to your skincare routine, but one of the main benefits is that Vitamin C is full of antioxidants. Antioxidants are highly effective in protecting your cells from free radicals, helping them to develop and repair without abnormalities - this is essential for your skin cells as they are damaged on a daily basis.
For Pigmentation One of the most effective and well-documented solutions for pigmentation is IPL and laser. Petrina favour’s the Lumenis M22 which has been featured on ITV, Grazia and was even voted the best resurfacing laser by Tatler. The M22 IPL offers a gentle, effective treatment that targets the pigmented areas. ResurFX is also effective, by stimulating collagen production it improves the overall texture of skin restoring a healthy glow. You can also combine IPL and ResurFX for the increasingly popular ‘laser facial’ known as PhotoFractional Skin Rejuvenation OBAGI-C FX

which really gives your skin a complete boost. Petrina adds that “the benefit of laser and IPL treatments is whilst they are targeting the problem they also provide a rejuvenating effect as well so you really see the impact”. IPL and ResurFX boast a minimal downtime, butif you are looking to get great results in only one treatment and don’t mind a slightly more aggressive approach, you can also opt for a CO2 laser treatment. “We use the AcuPulse laser which works by resurfacing the skin and encouraging new skin cells, lifting the pigmentation and creating new skin underneath”. If lasers aren’t your thing, other options that Petrina finds effective include the award-winning Obagi skin care range and also ViPeel, which works by essentially removing the top layer of skin that is damaged by the sun. “The combination of a chemical peel with hydroquinone offers a diverse way to treat pigmentation and it is also a suitable and effective treatment for all skin types, whereas IPL isn’t always as safe for darker skin types”.
Apply vitamin C topically with or before the application of sunscreen to boost effectiveness and help it to penetrate to the lower layers of your skin. Vitamin C is an effective added layer of protection against harmful UV rays and helps to prevent and treat UV induced photo damage. Petrina recommends Obagi Professional-C Serum, available at all MBA Clinic locations.
Protection is the key to preventing future sun damage related skin conditions, by using an SPF factor cream above 30 every day as part of your beauty routine you are making a great step towards protecting your skin, but we do mean every day. This is because we are still subject to harmful rays even on a cloudy day and in the Winter, so don’t let the dark skies fool you - a recent study found that 1 in 3 Brits experience sun damage from being in the UK alone. SPF not only protects from the sun but also creates a barrier to harmful free radicals that can irritate Rosacea and create broken capillaries on the face. There is such a variety of treatment options when it comes to skin conditions, it’s always better to seek personalised advice in a consultation rather than searching for a solution independently. “Experience using a variety of methods on a wide range of patients allows me to offer specific advice for my patients, you just can’t get the same experience online. At the end of the day, it’s a journey to better skin and we want patients to know they aren’t on that journey alone. We always review our patients regularly, offering professional advice and support that’s only a phone-call away”. All treatments* mentioned are available at MBA Clinics. Get in touch for a complimentary consultation to discuss your personal treatment plan or for more information. *Some treatments are prescriptive, so a consultation is required. UNIVERSAL
CARE W
hen Peter and Gillian Cullimore decided to form Universal Care in 1986, they could not have realised that the business would have continued to grow for the next 32 years and provide caring services to many Beaconsfield residents in their own homes. Originally, Universal Care provided nannies and au pairs as well as carers but because of Gillian’s background in nursing and particularly having been a district nurse, it was decided to concentrate on the caring aspect. The first problem was to find suitable offices and after months of searching they were able to find one room in Chester House in Windsor End in Old Beaconsfield. Fortunately, for them the occupiers of the other offices in Chester House were running down their business and gradually Gillian and Peter were able to take over the whole of Chester House. Following Gillian’s death in 1997, Peter decided that he had an excellent team of Care Managers and Carers and he would continue running the business. Universal Care was very privileged in 2013 to have the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Sir Henry Aubrey Fletcher to unveil a brilliantly made model of Chester House in Bekonscot model village. Several years later, Peter noticed that the adjacent premises, 11 Windsor End, were vacant. This had originally been a bakery, followed by a photographic studio and made a valuable addition to Chester House including facilities for a Conference Room which is now used regularly for training. Peter continues to work in the business on a day to day basis and has been very pleased to announce the appointment of Angela Geer as his Managing Director from May 2018. Angela has spent all of her professional career in the Health & Social Care sector. Her early career was in the private sector and in the provision of services to children and young people. work led to international assignments before returning to the UK where latterly she developed an interest and specialism in older people services and associated health challenges. She has been a representative in the creative and pioneering work of Dementia Friends, Campaign to End Loneliness and Silver Line. Her most recent executive appointments have been within the specialist area of epilepsy. BABY ON MIND: STOP ASKING ME! Y words: shireen wsaluja
ou are trying to have a baby and begin the process of eating healthy, detoxing, and using ovulation sticks to check if its time to be intimate and form the family you dreamt of. Fast-forward several months and all of this seems to still be happening; no pregnancy and no baby. You love your partner, but are tired of planning your “intimate time.” You seem to be attracting babies are all around you. Everyone’s posting on facebook and chatting away about their children and you’ve now started feeling a bit low, sad, and possibly anxious about your ability to conceive. You book that initial appointment to visit your GP and possibly start testing to see why you and your partner are not getting pregnant. You enter into a family party or a social setting and someone says, “Oh how long have you been married…? Ohhh 5 years..no baby?” “When are you having a baby?” BOOM…you lose it in your mind. You want to shout and scream I WANT A BABY….ITS NOT HAPPENING, but this person is looking at you with their judgmental eyes and hurtful questions. STOP ASKING COUPLES WHEN THEY ARE HAVING A BABY!!!! and how it should happen. They put a time scale on our reproduction, which raises the anxiety that often should not be present within us. Not everyone has the same fertility and not everyone has the same plans. Couples need to come up with a joined plan on how to tackle these types poised by individuals. As a couple come up with a strategy or a quick and quirky line that you both can use and bounce off of each other. This process is not only on the woman, but a man as well. Therefore, using a tag-team approach is essential. In addition to this, being mindful of the realities of pregnancy and not letting the opinions or judgmental thoughts of others influence your own mental space. Find time to discuss this with your partner. Find time to process the difficulties within yourself or with a therapist. Be mindful of your resentment or bitterness towards those that may have children. A healthy mind is a clear mind. Pregnancy is beautiful and having a baby is even better, but it’s not always easy. Best curls: Jennifer Lawrence To complement her stunning Dior disco ball dress at the Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence opted for Seventies-inspired curls. Award-winning hairdresser Lee Stafford has this hair how-to. “For Jennifer Lawrence’s voluminous curls, opt for a wand with a medium sized barrel like my Rainbow Shine Wand. Section your hair into two and work from the back of your head towards the front. For this look you want to curl even sections of hair, roughly one-inch, away from the face. Once you’ve finished curling, take a pea sized amount of hair wax and rub between your hands and comb the wax through the hair. This will give you matte texture a la J-Law.” Lee Stafford Rainbow Shine Wand, £29.99 72 JUNE 2018

Best lipstick: Lupita Nyong’o For the Baftas, make-up artist Nick Barose was inspired by Lupita Nyong’o’s latest movie role. “She’s wearing all black, I wanted the make-up to feel regal and fierce. The ‘panther eyes’ is a nod to her movie Black Panther,” the make-up artist says. “Dramatic graphic liner that looks cat-like adds so much toughness and attitude, and when paired with perfect elegant red lips, it gives the classic, feminine red lips a fun and tougher attitude.” Barose recommends Lancome’s Caprice shade to emulate this bold look: “Apply two coats for intensity.”; Lancome L’Absolu Rouge in Caprice, £25.50

Best up-do: Zendaya American actress Zendaya is a real red carpet chameleon, constantly switching up her hair; but for the Oscars she went with a super-sleek, scraped back chignon. Hair stylist and Viviscal Ambassador Neil Moodie offers his advice on updos: “A lot about putting hair up is having grip on the hair itself. Don’t have it too clean as it will be smooth and slippy. I recommend a little bit of root backcombing as this gives support as you’re putting it up. “For a neat, tight up-do, I always recommend spraying hairspray onto the brush so as you’re brushing the hair it distributes evenly and gives hair grip. Pins and grips are essential. Bend the end of the pin over and create a little hook so if it starts to slip out the hook will grip to the hair. I also suggest using a matte texture spray at the roots.” Windle and Moodie Sculpture Hairspray, £20
Best complexion: Helena Bonham Carter Morag Ross, make-up artist and SUQQU spokesperson, was responsible for Helena Bonham Carter’s incredible skin at the Baftas. Ross achieved the peaches and cream glow by first giving the actress a skinplumping facial massage, then used a 74 JUNE 2018

Leading actress nominee Margot Robbie was also presenting an award at the Oscars, so she drafted in the A-list’s favourite manicurist Tom Bachik, to get her nails ready for the spotlight. Bachik gave the Aussie actress a champagne shimmer, starting with OPI Lisbon Wants Moor and topping it with a chrome effect powder. The polish is available to buy, but if you want to get the exact same metallic top coat, you’ll need to book in for an OPI manicure in salon. Best eye make-up: Lady Gaga For her dramatic Grammys look, Lady Gaga turned to Marc Jacobs Beauty and the brand’s Global Artistry Ambassador, Sarah Tanno. “Gaga’s eyes were inspired by a dark, starry night, romantic and striking to complement her gorgeous gown,” Tanno says. She applied a gel crayon eyeliner heavily on the upper and lower lash line, then created a strong winged shape with liquid liner, blending the two together with a shimmery black eyeshadow and finishing with lots of mascara. Son fundraises for hospice in memory of the father he never met
The South Bucks Community Hospice was deeply touched by a fundraising gesture from a son in memory of the father he never met. Now, it is appealing for others to follow in his footsteps by becoming ‘Hospice Heroes’.
A
young man has raised around £1,000 for the hospice which looked after his father who died before he was born. Rob Cavanagh, 23, took part in a gruelling obstacle race in Kent last month as a fun challenge along with six friends. But he decided to use the opportunity to fundraise for The South Bucks Community Hospice as his way of saying thank you for the help the charity gave in 1994 to his late father, David. “As a group of friends, we decided this challenge was something we were going to do, and I thought it was a really good opportunity to do some fundraising by asking people to sponsor me. I have never given anything back to the hospice for the help they gave to my dad and I thought it was a great chance to do that.” Rob never met his father, who died aged 36 from pancreatic cancer. David was looked after at the hospice, then at Pusey House in High Wycombe, in 1994. The hospice has since moved to Butterfly House in Kingswood Place, High Wycombe.
“We are enormously grateful to him for still thinking of us and for donating this money to help other patients with life-limiting conditions” Ben O’Keefe, Community Fundraiser for the hospice, said: “This is a wonderful gesture from Rob and we are humbled by the fact his gratitude for the help given by hospice staff endures after all these years. We are enormously grateful to him for still thinking of us and for donating this money to

help other patients with lifelimiting conditions.” Rob, a former pupil of Wye Valley School in Bourne End, lived in Terriers until a year ago, but has moved to Slough where he now works as an apprentice for Mars. He and his friends, who called themselves Tribe Warriors, took part in the Spartan Race South East Sprint and Super Weekend challenge on April 7, completing the course as a team in three hours and nine minutes. The course featured a series of challenges including climbing up a rope, carrying a bucket with weights in it and throwing a spear at a target - with a penalty of 30 burpees for missing. “We were absolutely shattered and were all complaining the next day,” he said. “But we all really enjoyed it to the point we are signing up to do more of them.” There is still time to donate to Rob’s fundraising page to help the hospice. Celebrating 40 years at the forefront of British furniture design this year, Smallbone of Devizes is justly credited with transforming the humble kitchen into an aspirational entertaining space.
W
ith the sharing and enjoyment of food at the forefront of our lives today, we can easily forget that it hasn’t always been that way. The kitchen was once a sterile, functional space with little in the way of soul. 40 years ago, the birth of Smallbone of Devizes brought about a momentous shift in our perception of the kitchen and with it, a food revolution sparked. This pioneering British brand has transformed the kitchen beyond all recognition. Smallbone has shaped what was once a simple cooking space into a multifunctional social hub, significantly impacting the way we bond and entertain at home. For 40 years, Smallbone has paved the way for innovative kitchen design, introducing such features as the larder and kitchen island which, today, feel like the essentials of any luxurious kitchen. The trailblazing furniture-maker found its beginnings amid the tranquil rolling hills of Wiltshire when a talented young craftsman meticulously refurbished a pine chest, selling it on for a modest profit. Locals quickly began to clamour for his reconditioned dressers and soon a remarkably-crafted alternative to the identikit fitted kitchen found in homes across the country began to make waves. It was here that Smallbone of Devizes was born, and with it a new kind of ‘unfitted’ timber model would change the face of the contemporary, luxury kitchen forever.
“Smallbone’s rise has been meteoric and shows no sign of slowing” Since then, Smallbone’s rise has been meteoric and shows no sign of slowing. Popularising the notion of the hand-painted kitchen, the company became known for its ability to beautify what was once deemed mundane. Rag-rolling, dragging, stippling, marbling and trompe l’oeil directed the show and any presumptions of fitted kitchens were cast aside in favour of unfitted, freestanding pieces. Today, the kitchen continues to define the way we live and in close collaboration with its national and international clients, Smallbone leads in shaping our experiences at home. While the kitchen continues to act as a hub of entertainment, kitchen design is at the same time revisiting some of the original functions of the space, bringing food and tableware out of the cupboards and displaying them in new and innovative ways. A rise in selectivity about the way we care for our food has seen Smallbone evolve more traditional 80 JUNE 2018

forms of storage, bringing a contemporary aesthetic and functionality to the space with bespoke solutions handmade to exacting standards. 40 years since Smallbone first began revolutionising the way we envision our kitchens, homeowners are increasingly keen to recreate the experience of fine dining at home and the brand’s innovative approach to design empowers experimentation, instilling the confidence to create the impressive ambiance of eating out without stepping over the threshold. Wine, too, comes into play, with individuals opting to bring their collections up from the cellar to be displayed and impeccably maintained by Smallbone’s groundbreaking Wine Wall. But it’s not just about the kitchen. At Smallbone’s lead, the architectural detailing inherent in classic cabinetry has been parachuted beyond the kitchen and into the rest of house, manifesting in contemporary libraries, dressing rooms, wine cellars, media rooms, bathrooms and home bars across
the globe. Today, Smallbone’s ever-evolving design aesthetic informs every room in the house and delivers a new benchmark in global luxury. Across the Atlantic, upmarket architects and developers are proving hungry for the quintessentially British brand. A raft of residences in New York City in a clutch of top-flight developments, from One57 New York’s Central Park Tower and Walker Tower to 210 West 77th Street, prove that Smallbone’s approach to absolute luxury leads the way. Recently, clients in the Arabian Gulf, have favoured Smallbone cabinetry in numerous rooms including kitchen spaces, dressing rooms, media rooms and butlers’ pantries. The brand’s fusion of British handmade artisanship and design kudos has seen leading names including renowned architects Jean Nouvel and Bill Sofield specify Smallbone as their brand of choice, and with 40 years of heritage and craftsmanship behind it, Smallbone continues to ride the crest of the wave. www.smallbone.co.uk. 020 7589 5998
