THE CHARMING ABINGER HAMMER

The beautiful village of Abinger Hammer lies in the heart of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, located along the A25 between Dorking and Guildford. The village forms part of the parish of Abinger, alongside Abinger Common and Sutton Abinger, a mile from Gomshall railway station.

This charming village, known for its history and appearances in TV shows like Agatha Christie’s Poirot is well worth a visit.

The River Tillingbourne flows through the village and you’ll often see brown trout swimming in the stream, which is their natural habitat. The River Tillingbourne was impounded in the 16th century into a hammer pond, providing water power for Abinger Hammer Mill, also called Abinger Forge, the Hammer forge or Shere forge.

The Hammer mill boomed during the 16th century and the forge was reputed to have even made guns for use against the Spanish Armada. The clock which overhangs the main road portrays the figure of “Jack the Blacksmith”, who strikes the hour with his hammer. The clock bears the motto “By me you know how fast to go”. The clock was given in memory of the first Lord Farrer of Abinger Hall who died in 1899. The clock represents the iron industry and the role played by the county of Surrey in the industrial past.

As the weather improves the village green in Abinger is popular with locals and tourists who like to picnic on the grass whilst watching a game of cricket in surroundings which are quintessentially English. The cricket pitch borders the Tillingbourne. The Post Office sells nets for

children to “fish” in this shallow and sandy stream while Annie’s tearoom, next to the Post Office, offers lunches and teas seven days a week.

Just south of the village you’ll find Oxmoor Copse, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but aside from that the area is also within easy reach of the National Trust sites Abinger Roughs and Netley Park, offering woodland walks and panoramic views over the Tillingbourne Valley.

Timeless Interiors, Designed Around Real Life

Andrea Palmer Interiors (API) is a boutique interior design studio creating timeless, tailored, elegant and beautifully liveable homes across Surrey, Berkshire and beyond. At the heart of every project is a simple belief: the most successful interiors don’t follow a signature look, they reflect the people who live there. Homes should feel personal, intuitive and effortless – not “done” for the sake of it, and certainly not styled to impress at the expense of everyday comfort.

API’s client-first approach defines the studio’s work. Rather than beginning with a pre-set aesthetic, Andrea starts with the way a client wants to live: their routines, priorities and preferences, and the atmosphere they want their home to hold. Some clients love crisp contemporary lines

with warm neutrals, others lean towards colour with layered texture and softer detail. Many sit somewhere in between. The role of a designer, Andrea believes, isn’t to impose taste but to interpret it – translating what clients naturally gravitate towards into a cohesive, elevated scheme that will still feel right years from now. Trends may come and go, but a home that feels truly “you” has a quiet longevity.

For many homeowners, the challenge isn’t a lack of opinions – it’s knowing how to pull everything together. Clients often arrive with the same sentiment: “I know what I like when I see it.” Andrea’s gift is bringing clarity to that instinct. Through a structured, supportive design process, she helps clients articulate what they’re drawn to, refine it, and make confident decisions without

“Andrea is known for designing bespoke joinery and layouts that solve real-life challenges quietly – the kind of behind-the-scenes thinking that allows a home to look calm and uncluttered even when it’s working hard”

feeling overwhelmed by endless options. It’s a calm, guided experience that makes the journey as enjoyable as the finished result.

The individuality in an Andrea Palmer Interiors project is rarely loud; it’s found in the layering. Thoughtfully chosen materials and textures, the feel of a handle in your hand, the sheen of a stone surface, the softness of a fabric, the way light falls across a wall in the evening. These are the details that shape how a home feels day to day. Lighting is approached as more than a functional requirement, with mood and ambience carefully considered room by room, so spaces feel balanced, flattering and inviting at every time of day.

Practicality is treated with equal respect. Andrea is known for designing bespoke joinery and layouts that solve real-life challenges quietly – the kind of behind-the-scenes thinking that allows a home to look calm and uncluttered even when it’s working hard. Storage is integrated seamlessly, circulation and “flow” are refined, and every space is designed to support the way the household actually operates, whether that means busy family mornings, relaxed weekends, or hosting friends with ease.

Collaboration is another defining feature of the studio. Andrea works closely with architects, builders and specialist craftspeople to ensure the client’s taste is carried through at every stage. The

aim is always continuity: the intent behind the design is protected from first concept through to final installation, so what is imagined on paper is what is experienced in the finished home.

“The individuality in an Andrea Palmer Interiors project is rarely loud; it’s found in the layering”

API’s portfolio ranges from elegant family houses to contemporary residences, and the studio’s approach scales naturally across different briefs. Whether it’s a full new-build project, a sensitive refurbishment, or a single-room transformation, the same design principles apply: a tailored response to the client, an emphasis on proportion and detail, and an understanding that true luxury is liveable. These are homes designed to be enjoyed, not tiptoed around, always real.

For clients who want expert guidance with flexibility, Andrea also offers an online consultation service, bookable via the studio website. It’s a way to access the studio’s considered eye and practical expertise, wherever you are – and a natural extension of the same ethos that underpins every project: thoughtful design, shaped around you. andreapalmerinteriors.com

Steeped in History

The story of Loseley Park begins in the early years of the 16th century, when the Manor of Loseley was purchased during the reign of Henry VII. Its new owner, Sir Christopher More—Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex—was a man of considerable influence and authority. Yet it was his son, Sir William More, a direct ancestor of the present owners, who truly shaped Loseley’s legacy by embarking on an ambitious programme of building.

At the heart of the estate stands the magnificent Tudor manor house, located just three miles southwest of Guildford. Constructed between 1562 and 1568, the present house was built using stone salvaged from the ruins of nearby Waverley Abbey. It replaced an earlier, more modest dwelling—one that Elizabeth I famously deemed “not adequate” for a royal visit, prompting the construction of a grander residence worthy of her presence.

Loseley’s celebrated walled garden is based on a design by the renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and is arranged as a series of distinct

“At the heart of the estate stands the magnificent Tudor manor house, located just three miles southwest of Guildford”

“rooms,” each with its own character and planting theme. Redevelopment of the garden began in 1993–94 with the Rose Garden and has since expanded to include the Herb Garden, Flower Garden, White Garden, and, most recently, the organic Vegetable and Cut Flower Garden. Beyond the formal gardens, the Loseley Lakes offer a tranquil haven for both wildlife and visitors. These historic water features form part of the landscaped parkland surrounding Loseley House and once served practical purposes—providing fish, water, and beauty to the estate. Thanks to support from the Surrey Hills Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, the upper and lower lakes have recently been restored. The project has improved water quality, reopened views towards the house, and created thriving habitats for wildlife such as kingfishers and dragonflies. New picnic benches along the footpath now invite walkers to pause and enjoy the revitalised landscape.

Acquired by the direct ancestors of the current owners, the More-Molyneux family, at the beginning of the 16th century, Loseley Park remains a family home to this day. Still lived in by the More-Molyneux family, the estate opens to the public each spring, offering visitors a rare glimpse into centuries of English history set within a living landscape.

THE HISTORY OF GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL

Guildford Cathedral is a modern Cathedral with a truly remarkable story.

Building work on the Cathedral started in 1936, to a design by Sir Edward Maufe.

But work was stopped by the Second World War and its devastating aftermath. Despite enormous setbacks, regular services were held in the Crypt Chapel (the current Choir practice room) from 1947.

When building restrictions were lifted and materials were available again, there was a renewed sense of determination in the local community to complete the Cathedral. But there were very limited funds.

Eventually, through the Buy a Brick fundraising campaign, work re-started again in 1954. More than 200,000 ordinary people became brick-givers. Their generosity helped ensure the completion of what they thought of as “their Cathedral”. It was an extraordinary act of public support, a demonstration of modern community spirit. With a resilient and make do and mend approach, the inside of the Cathedral was furnished. Again, much of this was done with the assistance of local people. For example hand making the 1500 kneelers, which remain in place today.

The Cathedral - The People’s Cathedral - was consecrated on 17th May 1961 by Bishop George Reindorp in the presence of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, the Archbishop of Canterbury and a packed congregation from all parts of the diocese.

HIKING TRAILS IN THE SURREY HILLS

Join Simone Dill on one of the scheduled seasonal hikes, and you will not only have a guide to navigate, but will also learn about the local history and landscape from someone who is passionately knowledgeable about the Surrey Hills, and is an Ambassador for the North Downs Way. Back on Track also offer themed hikes in collaboration with other fabulous local businesses and Surrey Hills Enterprises members.

Having had a career as a sprint hurdler in former East Germany, Simone found that retirement from an athletics career meant that she had begun to neglect her own body’s health and needs. It was the London Olympics which inspired her to get ‘back on track’, and the idea for the business was born. Her particular passion has become the cycle of the seasons – spending much of her time outdoors, Simone realised how much we benefit from living more in tune with the natural energies and seasonal changes throughout the year. She is excited to help others along their fitness journey as they too aim to optimise their movement.

HORSEPOWER OF A DIFFERENT KIND!

Historics hosts major classic car auction at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 7th March

For a growing legion of car enthusiasts, owning and driving a classic car is a passion, the number on Britain’s roads steadily increasing. And right now, with spring arriving, it’s no surprise that the classic car collector fraternity are dusting down their prize possessions and shaping up for fun at the wheel.

Its excellent timing too for specialist classic car auctioneer Historics, who returns to Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 7th March to stage an open-to-public sale of some 180 hugely varied and fascinating examples of cars of yesteryear.

There are classics to suit all tastes and depths of pocket, from highly affordable examples –particularly 1960’s and 70’s British classics from the likes of Austin, Morris, MG Austin Healey etc through to highly-collectible icons with very significant value.

A great indication of the ‘something-for-all’

offering is a delightful 1964 MGB Roadster in bright and breezy Iris Blue, estimated between £8,000-£11,000. It contrasts spectacularly with a magnificent, super-rare 1958 Porsche 356 A Speedster in supreme condition and estimated at £290,000-£325,000.

Between these two benchmarks you’ll find enormous variety...For those with a passion for the glorious open-top days of 1930’s motoring, a 1934 Bentley Vanden Plas style Tourer is simply exquisite, whilst a 2001 Rolls-Royce Corniche V of 2001 is a vivid example of the best of British of twenty five years ago.

But it’s not all about touring exotica. Modern classics - cars of the 1980s to 2010s - are showing tremendous growth and here at Historics there’s a showcase to choose from, including a 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTi ‘hot hatch’ and 1994 BMW 850 CSI – both enticingly offered without reserve.

And for something completely different, there’s one of the very first current genre electric cars in mass production. Now a true classic and a real head-turner, the 2000 Honda Insight Mk.I is in exceptional condition and estimated at just £9,000£12,000. See also a fine example of the ubiquitous Volkswagen Microbus of 1966 vintage with a delightful custom interior - all set for holidays to the coast this spring and summer!

Take a thorough, close-up look at all entries on the three viewing days at the venue prior to the sale starting at 0930 on Saturday March 7th. For full information and bidder registration, in-hall, online and by phone, visit historics.co.uk

A Proud Tradition

Nestled in the heart of Surrey, Bisley Shooting Ground is more than just a sporting venue; it is a symbol of tradition, skill, and the finest clay shooting experience in the UK. Just 30 miles from central London and situated between the Surrey towns of Woking and Guildford, its rich history and picturesque setting attracts both seasoned professionals and eager novices, earning a welldeserved reputation as a world-class shooting ground.

The Painter’s Room, a bar on the ground floor of the five-star art deco landmark, Claridge’s, was conceived by interior designer Bryan O’Sullivan – and home to ground-breaking cocktails.

With a back story rich in art and design, The Painter’s Room is named as a homage to the same space at Claridge’s that was created in the 1930’s with murals by renowned artist Mary Lea.

The Painter’s Room is one of three bars, alongside the dark and glamorous Fumoir and the iconic Claridge’s Bar. Located in the space that bridges Claridge’s celebrated ballroom and the Talking Heads Gallery by Artist in Residence David Downton, The Painter’s Room is reimagined by Bryan O’Sullivan, inspired by old photos from the archives in the 1930’s.

The aesthetic pays tribute to the hotel’s Art Deco design heritage, with pale pink onyx featuring prominently. The bar, in this blush-coloured stone is the centrepiece, and is complemented by a feature skylight in peach and cream coloured glass.

British artist Annie Morris was specially commissioned to create an installation which runs across the entire space. Morris was inspired by the historic relationship between bars and artists, and how artists sit, observe, sketch and chat in bars and

YOUR HOLIDAY SHOULDN’T BE HARD WORK

Q. When we were chatting before this interview, you said luxury is about “ease.” What does that mean to you?

To me, true luxury is when everything flows. That doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful. A wellness retreat in the Alps where transfers, spa treatments, and mountain hikes are seamlessly coordinated. Or a short city break where the flights, hotel, and a hard-to-get dinner reservation are already sorted. We do work with high-touch experiences, but it’s not about the price tag, it’s about removing stress and creating something that feels personal.

Q. In your experience as a traveller and industry professional, have you noticed travel needs changing in recent years?

Very much so. People are no longer just looking for a nice hotel or a beautiful view, they often want something deeper, something that resonates. I’ve noticed a real shift towards travel that feels meaningful. For some, that means behind-the-scenes cultural access; meeting local artisans, exploring places tourists don’t usually see. For others, it’s culinary journeys, connecting with a region through its food and wine. And increasingly, it’s about restoration: wellness retreats, mindful escapes, and time to simply switch off in a way daily life doesn’t allow. Travel has become less about ticking off a destination and more about creating experiences that inspire, enrich, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

We’ve all been there. Ten-tabs deep in-flight options, hotel reviews, and “must-see” lists. Why does organising time away so often feel like a job in itself? We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach.

Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences?

I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens, from barefoot escapes on private islands to cultural weekends in Europe, and even multi-generational cruises or villas. And what always stands out is how much detail matters. The transfer that’s waiting without fuss or the restaurant that actually lives up to its promise. It’s these little things that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.

Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging?

Time, mostly. People are busy, and while travel should be restorative, organising it often isn’t. I’ve seen clients arrive exhausted before their holiday even begins because they’ve spent weeks trying to piece it all together online. One family I worked with wanted a milestone birthday in Tuscany. They’d been overwhelmed by villa choices and didn’t know which were genuinely right for them. We stepped in, found a villa with space for grandparents, teenagers, and young children, complete with a private chef for a celebratory meal and a private wine tasting. For them, it turned from a logistical headache into a celebration they’ll never forget.

Q. With travel uncertainty on the rise, how can travellers be sure their money is safe?

It’s a very real question for many travellers. At TRIPLA, protection isn’t an add-on - it’s the foundation of everything we do. All flight-inclusive holidays are fully ATOL protected, and every client payment is held securely in Trust by NatWest Bank and the Travel Trust Association. This means client money is safeguarded from the moment they book, even in the unlikely event that a supplier or TRIPLA were to fail. In a landscape where reassurance matters, TRIPLA ensures every journey is 100% financially secure.

Q. What’s the best way to start planning a trip with TRIPLA? Everything begins with getting to know you. When clients connect with us - whether online or by getting in touch directly - it gives us a sense of their travel style and helps us start shaping ideas that are genuinely personal. Joining our mailing list also keeps you in the loop with tailored inspiration, updates and occasional offers, including the chance to win a £500 travel voucher. It’s a simple first step toward creating a journey designed entirely around you.

Q. And finally, what do you hope clients feel when they travel with TRIPLA?

Peace of mind, really. That feeling of being looked after so they can just enjoy the experience. Whether it’s a river cruise with private excursions, a birthday in Tuscany, or a quick Parisian escape between board meetings, I want them to feel it was designed just for them. And that they never had to worry about the details.

A UNIQUE & RICH HISTORY

Chilworth Manor Vineyard occupies a gently sloping 10-acre site in the Surrey Hills adjacent to the Manor, a house and estate with an extraordinary 1000 year history that reaches as far back as the Domesday Book.

A family-run business in the beautiful Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB). The sustainably run Vineyard makes expertly crafted English rose and English Sparkling wine from grapes grown on its 10-acre site. The first vines were planted in 2013 and since then, the vision has been the same – to produce the best quality English still and sparkling wines while providing a friendly and personal service.

2024 saw the opening of the beautiful new Watch House Tasting Barn where vineyard tours, wine experiences, corporate days and private events are hosted. Please check availability and opening times on their website before visiting.

Chilworth Manor has a unique and rich history that spans nearly a thousand years. Once a Saxon manor recorded in the Domesday Book, it then became a Monastery where monks helped pilgrims en-route to The Pilgrims’ Way on nearby St Martha’s-on-the-Hill. Since the late 17th Century, it has been a family home and when Lady Heald took over the house in 1946, the Manor became a focal point in the community with a range of charitable events. This connection with the local community continues today with a variety of

charity events, including the National Garden Scheme’s Open Garden series and Picnics and Pimms (now Picnics and Pinks) outdoor concerts.

Chilworth Manor is open to visitors for these events, booking is essential.

This is a beautiful place to visit and explore.

The surrounding countryside is a haven for wildlife and birds and the vineyard is a founding member of the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain, established to encourage environmental sustainability in the UK wine industry.

Chilworth Manor Vineyard is one of the five founding Vineyards of the Surrey Hills that have helped put Surrey’s sparkling and still wines on the map. THE DETAILS

THE BUTLER IS BACK:

Raffles Hotels’ Most Charming Insider Brings

His Signature Service to London

Starring Henry Golding, a Glamorous New Cast Checks In at Raffles London at The OWO in the Next Chapter of the ‘The Butler Did It’

Raffles Hotels & Resorts is delighted to introduce the second chapter of its celebrated ‘The Butler Did It’ campaign—a clever continuation of the story first told in Singapore, newly set against the grand backdrop of London. Now the inimitable Butler, once again played by renowned

model Tim Easton, attends to a glittering new cast of hotel guests, including Henry Golding, Oli Green, Jacquetta Wheeler, Stephanie Grainger, and Amalie Gassman, as they check in at Raffles London at The OWO, one of the brand’s most notable recent debuts.

Under the continued creative direction of

Trey Laird, with photography by Dylan Don, and styling by Robert Rabensteiner, the campaign blends Raffles’ sense of theatre with a fashionforward wink. Through striking imagery and cinematic video, the narrative unfolds within the storied walls of the Old War Office. Captivating moments are brought to life by the everresourceful Butler, from private afternoon tea in The Drawing Room, to a bespoke bedtime story, and a royal wake-up call courtesy of the King’s Piper. Each vignette delivers a playful yet elegant expression of Raffles’ signature offering—service so personal it feels like magic. The campaign will launch globally across print, digital video, digital display, and paid social.

“At Raffles Hotels & Resorts, our butlers are more than a hallmark of service and hospitality— they epitomise our brand’s spirit, representing over a century of quiet artistry, graceful anticipation, and moments of emotionally intuitive care that are as individual as our guests. In bringing ‘The Butler Did It’ to London, our inspirational creative team has once again reimagined this tradition through a lens that is witty, whimsical, and unmistakably Raffles,” said Omer Acar, CEO, Raffles Hotels & Resorts.

The first chapter of ‘The Butler Did It’, unveiled last year, brought the brand’s signature butler service to life in Raffles Singapore and featured Waris Ahluwalia, Robert Rabensteiner, and May

Siu. In this new setting, the campaign channels quintessentially British sophistication while celebrating the many ways in which a stay with Raffles is intimate, enchanting, and effortlessly glamorous. The images also feature an air of mystery perfectly suited to Raffles London at The OWO, where some of England’s most notable spies walked the halls when it served as the Old War Office.

“Our vision for ‘The Butler Did It’ has always been to bring Raffles’ unique spirit to life—blending elegance with a hint of intrigue and showing a guest experience that is as stylish and witty as it is warm. Raffles London at The OWO, with its grand history and vibrant setting, offered an extraordinary stage for the campaign’s next chapter, giving the Butler new opportunities to create moments that are as unexpected as they are unforgettable,” said Trey Laird, founder of Team Laird.

In recognition of the campaign, Raffles has also unveiled ‘The Butler Did It Experiences,’ bespoke packages curated by Raffles Butlers to offer exclusive access and showcase the cultural richness of every Raffles destination in a one-ofa-kind way. As Raffles continues its thoughtful global expansion—with recent openings in Jaipur and Sentosa, and future destinations including Jeddah, Lake Como, Los Cabos, Shanghai, and Tokyo—’The Butler Did It’ offers travelers a fresh perspective on a tradition that has defined the brand since 1887. The campaign is both a celebration of Raffles’ heritage and a promise to create moments of extraordinary care and connection. Getting Your Personal Affairs in Order

Ensuring your affairs are in order is a crucial step in safeguarding your future and providing peace of mind for you and your family. Two key components of this process are creating a will and establishing lasting powers of attorney (LPA).

Wills

A will is a legal document that outlines your wishes regarding the distribution of your assets and the care of any minor children after your death. The intestacy rules are very antiquated and do not protect or provide for modern family structures. They also do not provide any protection in the event that a beneficiary is not capable of managing their inheritance after age 18. Relying on these rules is, in short, a recipe for disaster.

Having a Will is crucial for all business owners to ensure their business (and personal) assets are managed according to their wishes after their deaths. A well-drafted Will can help prevent potential conflicts among heirs, ensure the business is passed on to a capable successor, and provide financial

security for loved ones.

Getting a Will in place is the first step but it is important to then review and update your will regularly, especially after major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or significant changes in your financial situation or the financial and personal situation of your beneficiaries. Regular updates ensure that your will remains accurate and reflects your current wishes.

Wills can be very simple and set out in black and white who gets what and when. However, for many individuals, a slightly more flexible structure is appropriate in order to provide greater protection for the family in the long run. For example, what if one of your beneficiaries is mid-divorce at the time of your death? Their inheritance might pass quickly through their hands and into the hands of a soon-to-be exspouse.

It is also important to think about possible protection on the first death. What if your partner remarries or enters into a new relationship following your death? If you have left

everything to them, those assets may not end up with your shared children and might instead pass to the new family.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)

A lasting power of attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. There are two types of LPA:

• Health and Welfare LPA: This allows your appointed attorney(s) to make decisions about your medical care, living arrangements and other personal welfare matters.

• Property and Financial Affairs LPA: This allows your appointed attorney(s) to manage your finances, including paying bills, managing bank accounts and selling property.

Common Misconceptions about LPAs

“I’m not old enough to need an LPA.”

If only I had a pound for every time someone said this to me. Incapacity is not only caused by age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s or dementia though. It could be as a result of an accident, illness, stroke or heart attack to name but a few examples. Incapacity might also be temporary as we saw during the pandemic when some patients were put on ventilators for extended period of time.

“I Have a Will, So I Don’t Need an LPA”

Your Will appoints people to deal with your affairs after your death. Until that time, your chosen executors have no powers and your beneficiaries have no rights. A Lasting Power of Attorney appoints people to act for you during your lifetime in the event that you no longer have physical or mental capacity to do so.

“Everything is held jointly so I don’t need an LPA”

This is a common myth and one that can cause families a huge amount of stress and significant cashflow issues. Regardless of whether or not your joint owner is a spouse, banks will usually freeze a joint account as soon as they become aware that one party has lost mental capacity. An application to the Court of Protection is likely to take at least 9 months and cost a significant amount of money at a time when the family are already looking at increased costs and an urgent change in circumstances.

Having both types of LPA in place is crucial and protects not only you but also your family. An LPA:

• Ensures Your Wishes Are Respected: An LPA ensures that decisions made on your behalf align with your preferences.

• Prevents Legal Complications: Without an LPA, your loved ones may need to go through a lengthy and costly court process to gain the authority to make decisions for you.

• Peace of Mind: Knowing that someone you trust will manage your affairs if you become incapacitated provides peace of mind.

Just like a will, it’s important to review your LPAs regularly.

Changes in your personal circumstances or relationships may necessitate updates to your LPAs to ensure they remain relevant and effective.

Conclusion

Getting your personal affairs in order is a vital step in planning for the future. These documents provide clarity, ensure your wishes are respected, and offer peace of mind to you and your loved ones.

So use this as your call to action. Spring cleaning is not only for our houses, take some time to review your existing documents or seek advice on putting new documents in place.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

FEBRUARY 2026

FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:

Across many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions.

This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top.

In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity.

Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can

WHO GETS AHEAD?

play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors.

“The

higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system.

As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background — and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

BENEFITS OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

With options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.

ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES

One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular

learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.

CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES

Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualized attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.

“91

per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”

DEDICATED TEACHERS

Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Private schools typically maintain clear expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.

AMPLE RESOURCES

Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. These activities help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, and social

“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”

skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.

PREPARATION FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD

Private schools often go beyond standard curriculum requirements by offering specialized programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.

Preparing Young People for Life Beyond the Classroom

Education today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education.

Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers

Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination.

Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability – qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.

“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”

Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part of a team prepares students for real-world environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement.

Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends.

Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings.

By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

DOWNSEND SCHOOL: Preparing children for a world that doesn’t exist yet

Since the Covid pandemic, remote working and workforce changes have accelerated the adoption of digital tools. Furthermore, generative AI has changed not only ways of working, but ways of thinking.

Against this backdrop, we are increasingly educating our pupils for portfolio careers, among which are likely to be jobs that don’t yet exist. Studies, such as World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, indicate that analytical thinking remains the top core skill followed by a diverse range of attributes such as resilience, agility, social influence and creative thinking. This highlights the broad range of skills we need to embed; a blend of digital fluency, emotional intelligence, creativity and adaptability, coupled with excellence in all forms of communication.

This reinforced our determination at Downsend to ensure our pupils are future ready, educated beyond the traditional curriculum and have the grit to thrive in the changing world. This shaped our Future Skills vision to promote resilient, lifelong learners with awareness of their own skills. It is built around four interlinked aims: inspiring a global perspective, shaping incredible people, stimulating creativity, and building digital mastery. But what does that actually look like day-to-day?

It means our Year 4 pupils communicate designs to accept and implement feedback as they hone their

entrepreneurial mindset, Year 6 build businesses to raise money for local charities and Year 12 pupils pitch business proposals at Battersea Power Station. It means GCSE students run the technical aspects of the Year 7 play and Year 12 Sports Leaders organise activities for younger students. It means partnerships with Lego Education, CREST awards in STEM, and a £5m Creative Arts Centre where pupils can explore theatre, music and art in inspiring surroundings. It also means not compromising on the fundamentals. Our commitment to academic ambition, personalised learning and brilliant basics remains central.

What sets Downsend apart is how intentionally these future skills are woven into everyday learning. Every lesson plan, from our nurseries all the way through to Sixth Form, seeks opportunities for collaboration, communication and creative problem-solving. Pupils are given a voice from their earliest days, encouraged to debate, present and speak confidently to a wide range of people. Digital skills are planned so ‘every click counts’ and screen time is balanced by practical and traditional activities to ensure wellbeing.

For parents looking beyond league tables and exam results, Downsend offers something different. An education designed not just for the world as it is, but for the world as it will be. downsend.co.uk

You can do it all at Millfield and Millfield Prep School

Prep School and the start of Senior School should be a time where students can, alongside their academics, try anything. They should have free reign to discover their passions, find what they’re good at, and try everything in a supportive, nurturing and positive environment. At Millfield and Millfield Prep School, pupils can do it all, without compromise.

At Millfield Prep, life beyond academics is rich and varied. With over 10 hours of sports and co-curricular sessions weekly, Year 7 and 8 pupils dive into everything from team sports and musical theatre productions to inter-house bake-offs, councils, and camps. This is often where passions start to be discovered. Pupils are given the opportunity to try everything and find what they really love, and it’s absolutely fine, and actively encouraged, if this exploration continues into Year 9.

As part of the Nine at Millfield programme at Millfield Senior School, students are given the opportunity to try a range of different activities through the Millfield Activity Programme (MAP). The relaxed format and environment allow students to try something new, such as mountain biking, pickleball or beekeeping, with no commitment to continue it long term.

academic outcomes in the classroom being reflected on the sports field or in the arts, and vice versa. Location is an important factor in choosing an appropriate Prep and Senior School. Millfield Prep is ideally located in the Somerset market town of Glastonbury, with all facilities conveniently on campus. This minimises the need for families to be driving around to drop children off at various different locations for early morning swimming, and late football training and the like.

The school is a short, seven-minute drive away from Millfield’s campus which share its facilities with Millfield Prep. Millfield’s campus offers a further 250 acres of Somerset countryside, as well as an Olympic sized swimming pool, Music School and 400-seat theatre.

ABERDOUR SCHOOL

At Aberdour School, we believe that childhood is not something to rush through, but something to cherish.

Every child who walks through our doors arrives with their own story, strengths and way of seeing the world, and our focus for the year ahead is to deepen our commitment to personalised learning while nurturing the wellbeing, confidence and joy that allow children to flourish.

We recognise that brilliance in young children does not always look the way we expect. It may whisper rather than shout. It can be found in a curious question, a moment of kindness, the way a child hums a tune, builds with blocks, or tells a story only they can imagine. A child’s journey begins when we listen carefully and observe closely. It continues as we create safe, responsive spaces where children feel free to take risks, explore ideas and express themselves in their own unique ways. These are often small moments, but they are powerful ones – the quiet sparks where confidence and curiosity begin.

Aberdour pupils skip into school and move through their days with smiles, laughter and

a strong sense of belonging. We believe that schooldays should be among the happiest of a person’s life, and at Aberdour that happiness begins the moment children arrive. From Nursery through to Year 6, our approach is carefully tailored to the individual, allowing every child to make the very best of their time with us.

We also believe deeply in giving children the space they need to grow. Set within 12 acres of beautiful parkland, Aberdour offers room to run, explore, imagine and build friendships. Our broad curriculum and rich co-curricular programme allow pupils to discover passions, develop talents and gain the confidence to be themselves –whether outdoors, in the classroom, or through creative and collaborative experiences.

Through our bespoke P.A.L. (Personalised Achievement & Learning) approach, we support each pupil to explore their strengths, interests and aspirations, ensuring they feel known, valued and gently stretched. Alongside strong academic foundations, we invest in experiential and innovative learning – from outdoor education and creative arts to digital fluency and exploring the ethics of artificial intelligence.

Our aim is simple: to help every child grow in confidence, delight in learning, and step forward with curiosity, kindness and belief in their own brilliance.

Churcher’s College: An All-Through Education Where Pupils Flourish

For families exploring school options in Hampshire, Churcher’s College stands out as a leading choice. Set within the South Downs National Park and close to the borders of Surrey and West Sussex, the school spans two spacious sites. Children begin at the Junior School and Nursery in Liphook, surrounded by trees and open space, before progressing to the historic Senior School in nearby Petersfield. As an independent day school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18, Churcher’s offers stability, community and a strong sense of belonging—the best of an all-through education.

A HAPPY AND RELAXED BEGINNING

At the Junior School and Nursery, children start their learning journey in a bright, nurturing environment. With generous outdoor space, pupils enjoy a childhood connected to nature, where exploration, play and fresh air are part of everyday learning. Outdoor activities are woven throughout the curriculum, supporting curiosity, wellbeing and confidence.

The school’s much-loved “have a go” ethos encourages pupils to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm. A broad, creative curriculum spans languages, music, art, science, sport and adventurous outdoor learning. Pastoral care is a particular strength: staff know each child individually and

work closely with families to ensure every pupil feels safe, valued and understood. By the time children move up to the Senior School at 11, they do so with readiness and excitement.

GROWING IN CONFIDENCE AND CHARACTER

The Senior School and Sixth Form build on this strong foundation, combining academic ambition with personal development. Excellent teaching sits alongside wide opportunities in sport, music, drama, art and the acclaimed outdoor education programme, helping pupils discover new interests and strengths.

The school aims to develop thoughtful, grounded and confident young adults. A focus on social awareness nurtures resilience, empathy and independence - qualities that prepare pupils for life beyond school.

In 2026, makeup has shifted away from heavy contour, sharp eyeliner, and overtly bold lips. The beauty world is embracing what experts are calling the blurred look, a soft-focus approach that enhances your features without masking them. Skin glows naturally, lips appear gently stained, and eyes are subtly defined without harsh edges. It is a look that feels editorial yet accessible, polished yet lived-in — perfect for London readers who appreciate elegance with an understated edge.

What sets this trend apart is its emphasis on natural texture. Heavy powders and overly matte foundations are replaced with lightweight, glowy formulas that allow skin to breathe. Cream blushes, tinted serums, and skin tints provide a soft luminosity while evening tone and enhancing features. The result is a complexion that feels effortless, healthy, and fresh, creating the ultimate “skin, just better” effect. Layering is intentional but subtle: cheeks, lips, and eyes are harmonised for cohesion without precision that feels staged or artificial.

The Blurred Makeup Trend

Soft-Focus Glam Dominates 2026

Lips are central to the blurred look. Instead of sharply defined lines or bold matte finishes, makeup artists suggest soft washes of colour, applied with fingertips or a gentle brush. The goal is a natural, just-bitten effect that mirrors the appearance of real, lived-in lips. Cheeks echo these same tones for a harmonious, balanced look, while eyes are kept soft with neutral shadows

GLOSSIER GENERATION G SHEER MATTE LIPSTICK
NUDESTIX GEL COLOR LIP + CHEEK BALM

and minimal mascara. Even highlighter is applied sparingly — just enough to enhance contours without overpowering the natural glow.

Eyes, too, are softened. Instead of thick eyeliner or dramatic smokey effects, muted shadows in taupe, rose, and soft browns frame the eye naturally. Mascara enhances lashes subtly, emphasizing definition without stark separation. The overall effect is approachable yet polished, editorial but wearable — a look that transitions effortlessly from a casual coffee meeting to evening drinks or a photoshoot. This versatility is a major reason the trend is rapidly gaining traction in fashion capitals like London, where beauty often reflects understated sophistication.

The blurred look is also about technique. Fingertips, soft brushes, and sponges are preferred over rigid tools for diffusing edges and blending pigments seamlessly. Makeup is applied in layers, with each element lightly built to avoid harsh lines. Cream-based blushes and balms allow colour to melt into skin rather than sit on top, and lips are blurred and patted rather than lined. Highlighters and illuminators are strategically placed on high points — cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and brow bones — to enhance dimension without shimmer overload. The philosophy is simple: enhancement over perfection, subtlety over statement.

This movement reflects a wider cultural shift in luxury beauty, particularly relevant in London. Modern consumers value authenticity, versatility, and effortless elegance over highly constructed or dramatic looks. The blurred makeup trend allows wearers to embrace imperfection, while still appearing polished and stylish. For busy

professionals, fashion-conscious socialites, and beauty editors alike, it offers a day-to-night look that is both practical and photogenic. Social mediafriendly but not staged, it celebrates individuality and confidence in a way that feels attainable.

The trend’s rise has inspired brands to develop products specifically suited to the soft-focus aesthetic. From sheer lip oils to multi-use balms, lightweight foundations to luminous cream blushes, these tools make achieving the blurred look easy, even for those new to makeup. The focus is on products that blend effortlessly, layer seamlessly, and highlight natural radiance, all while allowing the wearer to personalize the look to their own features.

A New Standard in Private Fitness Design

In an era where wellness is no longer confined to the walls of commercial gyms, Gym Design & Supply is redefining how private fitness spaces are conceived, built and experienced. With over 20 years of expertise, the studio has become synonymous with bespoke gym environments that blend performance, aesthetics and lifestyle – transforming underused spaces into aspirational sanctuaries for body and mind.

At the heart of the brand is a deeply personal design philosophy. Every project begins with understanding how clients want to feel in their gym, not just how they want to train. This holistic approach reflects a wider shift in fitness culture: alongside strength and conditioning, clients are embracing active recovery, low-intensity cardio, yoga, stretching and mindfulness as essential components of long-term wellbeing. Gym Design & Supply responds by creating versatile environments that seamlessly support HIIT sessions one day and restorative movement the next.

luxurious – a room designed to motivate, inspire and welcome daily use. Integrated mirrors enhance light and scale, while intelligent layouts maximise training potential without compromising flow or elegance.

Design trends are also shaping equipment choices. Clients are favouring all-in-one strength systems, multi-joint compound movements and free weights over single-use machines. The rise in women confidently lifting heavier weights is particularly notable, reinforcing strength training’s role in longevity, bone health and functional mobility. Cardio, too, has evolved – with users moving away from restrictive, single-platform machines in favour of equipment compatible with multiple training apps and larger screens.

One standout example is a recent garage conversion in St George’s Hill, Weybridge, where a cluttered storage space was transformed into a refined, fully equipped home gym. Clean architectural lines, premium rubber flooring, bespoke wall cladding and carefully considered lighting elevate the space from functional to

Ultimately, Gym Design & Supply understands that today’s home gym must be more than a workout room. It should be a happy place – visually striking, emotionally uplifting and tailored with the same care as any luxury interior. From private residences to hotels and developments, their spaces are designed to ensure one thing: you genuinely want to come back, day after day.

The Royal Marsden Private Care

Ovarian cancer patient Katy Stephenson explains how The Royal Marsden Private Care’s holistic approach has given her peace of mind

Q: How and when were you diagnosed?

I first noticed something wasn’t right six months before I was diagnosed, but after going to the GP with abdominal pain, bloating and fatigue, I was told I was anaemic and had an underlying infection. It wasn’t until six months later when I had appendicitis that it was picked up on a scan, and I was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer in January 2021.

Q: What was your initial treatment?

I was initially referred to Nuffield Hospital, where I was given six rounds of chemotherapy. This gave me the all-clear for a year. Unfortunately, the cancer spread to my abdominal cavity. Following more chemotherapy and surgery, I decided to move to The Royal Marsden in May 2023.

Q: What is your experience of being under the care of The Royal Marsden?

My first appointment at The Royal Marsden was with Professor Susana Banerjee. And after my first appointment with her, I felt like she was totally on the ball. I also got to meet a whole team of people who would be taking care of me in a holistic approach, which comforted me as I knew they were all communicating with each other.

Q: How are you doing now?

I have now been stable for 17 months, thanks to the maintenance drug niraparib, and feel as though I am on the cutting edge of everything. Being under the care of The Royal Marsden also gives me peace of mind. I feel like I am in the right place, getting the right care – and that’s genuinely an incredible feeling.

WOOD VS MARBLE: The table top guide

The unique shapes and patterns provided by the natural world are the building blocks of furniture favourites found in every home. Fibres become our fabrics, sand becomes our glass, and most importantly (to me, dear reader) the myriad of marbles and timbers form our tables, big and small. Is there anything more beautiful than a table topped with intricately veined Calacatta, or the rich grain of an oak surface? But how do you choose between the two? Both are embodiments of design majesty, albeit for very different reasons.

What belongs where – and why does it belong there? What are the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between these material giants? Welcome to a heavyweight title fight: Wood vs Marble.

The big picture: Marble is synonymous with opulence. The palaces of antiquity were shaped by it, and modern spaces are not so different. Today, however, the material is used more internally than externally. It can be used to create truly unique, one-of-a-kind tables, with veins that can be traced through a seemingly indestructible surface; a

kind of liquidity within the absolute. Meanwhile its wide variation of earthy finishes makes it a natural choice for countless settings: a master of standing out while fitting in. Marble is surprisingly versatile... for a rock.

On the other side, wood tables are the original. Picture Goldilocks and her porridge. Medieval dining halls. One thing in common: wood. Their desirability comes from natural warmth, the soothing patterns of the grain, and the familiarity of a timber dining table – something many of us grew up with at home.

Look and feel: The physical texture of both materials is solid, strong and supportive. Wood with its subtle, story-telling imperfections and natural tactility brings an instant sense of comfort to a room. Marble by contrast is cool to the touch not just to the eye.

It’s what these materials evoke that truly sets them apart. Wood’s organic character offers a welcoming charm as you enter a space, as if inviting you to take a seat at the table or set down your Earl Grey. Marble, on the other hand, is sleek and dynamic, perfectly suited to moments that call for something a little more eye-catching. Durability: “Solid as a rock,” as the old saying

goes, marble is one of nature’s most durable materials. Highly resistant to temperature changes and capable of withstanding a significant amount of force, standing strong against the thrills and spills of a busy household – unless, of course, you’re holding a glass of wine. Depending on whether it has been pre-sealed, marble is incredibly porous, readily absorbing certain liquids that can leave rings or stains. Coasters, therefore, are an absolute must when entertaining. Or drinking alone. We don’t judge.

Wood, while lacking the innate strength of marble, is far more forgiving if something does go wrong. Scratches and chips are considerably easier to repair and for many the natural wear and tear of everyday use develops something that looks better nowhere else than on timber: character.

Ethical Consumption: As with the manufacture and transportation of anything in the modern world, both marble and wood come with environmental drawbacks. Because both are naturally occurring commodities, we have to look a little deeper than usual. Marble is generally less ecologically impactful to manufacture, but it is non-renewable and—unlike trees—cannot be regrown (not unless you’re prepared to wait a few eons). As such, it must be cared for with absolute diligence to ensure longevity.

Wood, while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential.

The answer? Shop brands with clearly defined eco-policies – those that make a genuine, vested effort to leave the planet better for having been part of their process. Look for commitments

to tree replacement or CO2 reduction, and manufacturers that provide aftercare guidance to extend the lifespan of each piece. Brands such as Gubi and Audo are excellent examples of these principles in practice.

Maintenance: One of the more closely matched categories in this comparison: both materials require a certain level of TLC. To maintain the prestigious look they offer, it’s best to use pH-neutral cleaners that won’t damage delicate surfaces. As mentioned previously, sealed marble provides far greater protection from the thrills and spills of a busy household, however, care is more about prevention than cure. Coasters and mats are an essential accessory.

Wood, on the other hand, is more forgiving. Surface-level scratches can be sanded out, a leg can be replaced, and a fresh layer of finish can be applied breathing new life into what may one day be considered a family heirloom. We’d also recommend a weekly wipe-down and limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for certain timbers, helping to prevent bleaching over time. chaplins.co.uk

Five Design Shifts Shaping Home Renovations in 2026

Home renovations are becoming more considered, more personal and, above all, more intelligently planned.

Olya, founder and design director of Hampton Court–based OAT Interiors, shares five shifts shaping how homeowners want their homes to function and feel.

Defined zoning is

back

After years of open-plan enthusiasm, homeowners are rediscovering the value of definition. While removing walls once symbolised space, it often introduced visual noise and compromised how rooms were actually used. Structure is now being reintroduced through furniture layouts, colour zoning and considered lighting schemes. In family homes in particular, there’s a return of the snug or an adults-only retreat – spaces that offer privacy without isolation.

Lighting as an architectural element

Lighting is no longer resolved at the end of a project. A combination of ambient, task and accent lighting allows rooms to adapt throughout the day, supporting both function and atmosphere. This approach avoids harsh overhead schemes and brings depth and balance to interiors.

Practical luxury is redefining “over the top” Luxury is increasingly defined by how well a home supports daily life. Features once considered indulgent are now viewed as thoughtful additions: second dishwashers in kitchens, dedicated dog showers, or bespoke storage in “bootility” spaces. These details aren’t about excess, but about anticipating real routines.

Colour has reclaimed its confidence

Neutral palettes are no longer the sole route to sophistication. Rich greens, claret and wine tones, and carefully balanced palettes are adding depth and character without overwhelming a space. Elegance now lies in balance rather than neutrality.

Design decisions are happening earlier

Perhaps the most significant shift is timing. Homeowners are increasingly engaging interior design expertise before plans are finalised, electrics set or builder quotes confirmed. Early design input helps avoid costly changes later and results in homes that feel coherent rather than pieced together.

As Olya explains, “Strong design decisions made early set the tone for the entire project. When layout, lighting and finishes are considered together from the outset, the process feels calmer and the outcome far more resolved.” This principle underpins OAT Interiors’ trademarked F.L.O.W. Method™, a structured approach that anchors every layout, colour and lighting decision.

Ways to style red for 2026

Ignite the fire inside with bold and passionate red this year.

“New year, new you - new colour, new mood? That rings true if you want to make a big statement this year with colour. Red as a colour trend is growing, and we predict it will continue to gain momentum as the year progresses. For anyone who wants to make a bold start to the year, this is the trend for you.

The psychology of red differs depending on the context. Often associated with passion, romance, and excitement, it can also convey feelings of danger or anger, like the term ‘seeing red’. When it comes to interiors, it’s not just timeless but also incredibly versatile. It can be used to warm up the living room, make the dining room feel more intimate or inject passion into the bedroom.

The ‘unexpected red theory’ trend can be traced back to the start of red’s surge in popularity. The trend, which originated from TikTok, involves adding a hint of red to enhance the room’s appearance. This can be through accessories like a red cushion on a neutral-coloured sofa or by introducing a red lamp to a neutral space.

For those who want to go all out with red on the walls, it’s about picking the right tone of red. Terracotta trends quite highly on Google with 1,300 searches for the term ‘terracotta paint colour’. It’s a great choice if you want to inject an earthy touch into the room, thanks to its reddishbrown undertone. Oxblood with 2,400 searches is the red tone to inject passion, sophistication and warmth into the room. It works particularly well if you have wall-panelling as it highlights the depth of the walls. Burgundy, with 5,400 searches, has a cooler undertone compared to oxblood and is reminiscent of red wine.

Red’s fiery and bold presence allows it to complement or contrast different textures. Velvet or plush fabric upholstery, wall panelling, textured

wallpaper, and lacquered tiling are many ways red textures can be introduced into your home. Meanwhile, metallic textures like vases, lamps or coffee tables provide a stylish contrast and brighten up the room.

Besides textures, mixing and matching red with other colours creates a layered look. Pairing red with earth tones like light brown wood tones, light greys and indoor greenery helps soften the room and create a calming anchor. The colour-drenching trend shows no signs of going away, and layering the room with different tones of red creates a chic and sophisticated look. Burgundy walls and a burnt orange sofa create a striking effect with their fiery spirit, which lights up the room.” furniturechoice.co.uk

William Wood: A New Era of Interiors

There’s a quiet shift happening in UK homes. We’re moving away from the disposable, the overly uniform, the forgettable and returning to pieces that feel intentional. Furniture that holds presence. Design that has a point of view. And interiors that reflect how we want to live now: slower, calmer, and more connected to nature.

At William Wood, this is exactly where we sit. Known for statement mirrors and luxury furniture, William Wood has become a go-to for those who want their spaces to feel elevated without feeling untouchable. It’s a brand that understands the modern home isn’t just somewhere you live, it’s somewhere you retreat, reset, host, create, and sometimes simply exhale. Each piece is designed to add impact, while still feeling timeless enough to live with for years.

The brand’s signature lies in balancing bold design with a refined aesthetic: sculptural forms, rich textures, and a careful attention to proportion. Mirrors remain at the heart of the collection, from oversized, architectural designs that bring instant drama to a space, to softly curved silhouettes that add light and calm. But William Wood has evolved far beyond mirrors alone, with furniture

collections that allow customers to build a home with continuity, character, and intent.

Recent launches have leaned into this evolution. New arrivals have introduced more experimental shapes and finishes, wavy edges, irregular curves, organic lines - a clear nod to a future where interiors are less rigid and more expressive. The result is a collection that feels current, but never trend-chasing: pieces that make a statement without shouting.

This year, William Wood is also placing a renewed focus on one of the most influential design movements emerging across interiors: biophilic design.

More than a buzzword, biophilic design reflects a growing desire to reconnect with the natural world through our spaces - especially in cities like London, where the pace is fast and the outside world can feel relentless. It’s about more than adding plants to a room. It’s the use of natural textures, soft light, organic shapes, grounding tones, and materials that create a sensory calm. Think rippled wood grains, stone-inspired finishes, earthy palettes, and silhouettes that mimic nature rather than straight lines.

William Wood’s approach to biophilic design is rooted in craftsmanship and mood. A side table with a fluid, wave-like edge. A coffee table with a softened form that feels carved rather than manufactured. A mirror that echoes the shape of water or a landscape horizon. These are pieces designed not just to fill a space, but to change how

it feels to be in it.

The brand’s latest push is also driven by how people are shopping and styling now. Customers are curating “moments” within their home - a reading nook, a hallway statement, a softly lit corner that feels like an escape and William Wood designs with those scenes in mind. It’s the art of turning everyday living into something more considered.

Ultimately, William Wood stands for modern luxury that doesn’t feel cold. For design that makes an impression, but still invites you in. And for homes that reflect not just personal style, but personal wellbeing.

Because the future of interiors isn’t just about what looks good - it’s about what makes us feel good, too.

Pantone’s Colour of the Year brings serenity to bathrooms

Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2026 is set to make a quiet but powerful impact in the home, and according to the experts at independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore, nowhere will the calming influence of Cloud Dancer be felt more than in the bathroom.

As homeowners increasingly look to create spa-like spaces that support rest and wellbeing, this soft, airy off-white offers the perfect foundation.

Unlike stark whites or cold greys, Cloud Dancer sits in a warmer, gentler place.

It reflects light beautifully while still feeling cocooning, making it particularly well suited to bathrooms, where calmness and serenity are key.

Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director, Porcelain Superstore, said: “Bathrooms are no longer just functional spaces, they’ve become places to switch off and Cloud Dancer speaks directly into that mindset.

“It is soft, reassuring and timeless, which makes it ideal for bathrooms where you want to create a sense of calm without the space feeling bland or clinical.”

For those homeowners embarking on a bathroom renovation this new year, Abbas feels Cloud Dancer is a great inspiration when it comes

to tile selection.

Not only will its creamy off-white hues help smaller bathrooms feel more open, but in larger spaces tiles in Cloud Dancer-esque shades will provide a serene backdrop that lets textures and finishes shine.

Abbas added: “Cloud Dancer is incredibly versatile. It works just as well with natural materials like wood and stone as it does with more contemporary finishes such as brushed brass or matt black brassware.

“It also complements a wealth of colours, from pastel shades through to bolder hues, for those homeowners who want to add contrast and interest through accessories.”

For those keen to embrace the trend fully, Abbas recommends layering similar tones rather than matching everything exactly. Soft beige or offwhite wall tiles, lightly veined floor tiles and tonal grout can all help create a seamless, relaxing feel.

Porcelain Superstore offers a wide range of tiles in creamy off-white shades, including Heath White and Nomad Chalk.

With no swimmers to disturb and plenty of time before the summer rush, winter is an opportunity for essential refurbishment and servicing work to be done - ensuring effortless enjoyment when warm weather returns.

Indoor Pools: Winter Wellness, Expertly Maintained

Indoor pools also benefit from seasonal attention. Your pool engineer can assess humidity control, air quality and ventilation, ensuring a healthier, more comfortable environment year-round.

Enhancing lighting, adding acoustic treatments or introducing spa features such as hydrotherapy jets or counter-current systems can enhance wellbeing.

Winter is also the ideal moment to review insulation, fine-tune plant room systems and optimise filtration efficiency - all carried out discreetly while normal family life continues.

Little Touches, Big Differences

Energy efficiency upgrades are another winter win. Your pool engineer can install modern heat pumps, advanced filtration systems and automatic covers that reduce running costs while improving comfort.

For homeowners seeking a more contemporary aesthetic, winter allows for creative refinements - from sleek porcelain terraces to sculptured entry steps - elevating an existing pool into a true outdoor retreat.

Smaller upgrades can make a surprising impact. Smart automation systems allow you to monitor water chemistry, schedule cleaning, adjust temperature and control lighting from a smartphone, making summer enjoyment effortless.
