Join Judi as she lifts the curtain on cherished memories and hilarious anecdotes from seven decades of performing with some of the greatest names in theatre and film. At turns deeply touching and riotously funny, this evening will show Judi at her inimitable best: telling the stories of a lifetime spent as one of the world’s best-loved performers. Walk with her through her garden as we meet the real Judi, surrounded by the home she made with her beloved late husband Michael. Dame Judi Dench has won every award the profession can bestow. She has played queens and murderers, mothers and monsters, Shakespeare’s heroines and the most powerful woman in British intelligence. An autumn escape to Hever Castle A

s summer gives way to crisp mornings and golden afternoons, there’s something particularly special about exploring the Kent countryside. And at Hever Castle & Gardens, autumn brings its own spectacular transformation. Set in 150 acres of historic grounds, Hever is perhaps at its most atmospheric at this time of year. The 14th-century castle, once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, is framed by the rich reds, oranges and golds of the changing landscape, creating a wonderfully picturesque setting for an autumn day out. One of the season’s highlights is the Boston Ivy covering the front of the Castle, which turns a striking deep red as the weeks go by. Across the gardens, beech, liquidambar, tulip trees and Japanese maples add layers of colour, while the lake and woodland walks offer a chance to slow down and enjoy the changing season. This year, Hever’s Autumn Colour runs until 1 November, with plenty to discover alongside the seasonal displays. Throughout October, visitors can meet gardening experts and horticulturalists, join talks and tours, and pick up ideas for their own gardens. There are sessions on dahlias, trees and fungi, as well as sustainable autumn crafts and a chance to get involved with planting spring bulbs in the Castle grounds. 2 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

For those looking for a quieter way to enjoy the season, the gardens provide plenty of space to wander at your own pace. Follow the paths around the lake, explore the formal gardens or simply find a bench and take in the views. And, of course, there is the Castle itself, where more than 600 years of history can be explored, from its Tudor connections to the stories of the people who have called Hever home over the centuries. Families can make a day of it too, with adventure play areas, mazes and plenty of space to explore. During the October half-term, Hever’s Halloween trail adds a little extra seasonal fun, with a mad scientist theme running from 17 October to 1 November. Whether you’re looking for a countryside walk, inspiration for your garden, a dose of history or simply somewhere beautiful to spend an autumn day, Hever Castle offers plenty of reasons to embrace the season. Hever Castle & Gardens, Hever, near Edenbridge, Kent. Autumn Colour runs until 1 November 2026. Halloween Half Term runs 17 October to 1 November 2026.

Just a 20-minute stroll from the town’s welcoming pubs, restaurants and independent shops, our off-grid haven blends rural simplicity with thoughtful comfort, and a generous sense of space. Every pitch and tent has room to breathe. Our grass camping pitches invite you to return to the basics: canvas, campfire and a sky full of stars. Campfires are warmly welcomed here, and with minimal lighting across the site, evenings unfold beneath some of Kent’s most spectacular night skies. Curious Minds, Confident Next Steps Autumn is an exciting time at Breaside, as pupils settle into a new school year and families begin thinking ahead to the next stage of their child’s education.

F

rom Kindergarten age 2½ through to Year 6, pupils benefit from a rich and ambitious education that combines strong academic foundations with confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning. Small class sizes and dedicated teachers mean every child is known as an individual, allowing them to be supported and challenged in the right way. Across our two Bromley sites, learning extends well beyond the classroom. Specialist teaching in Art, Science, Music, Languages and Sport sit alongside Forest School, outdoor learning, adventurous trips and creative opportunities such as the Tycoon Enterprise Project with the Peter

Jones Foundation. Together, these experiences help pupils develop curiosity, resilience, creativity and the confidence to take on new challenges. For families considering Breaside, our autumn Open Mornings will take place on 8 October at Widmore Road and 15 October at Orchard Road, offering the chance to meet our teachers and pupils, explore our learning environments and experience school life first-hand. This is also an important time for families considering 7+ entry. Early applications are encouraged ahead of our assessments in January. Children are assessed in English, comprehension, mathematics and reading, while we also consider communication skills, attitude to learning and how they interact with others. Just as importantly, we want to understand each child as an individual and whether they will thrive within the Breaside community. Our approach continues through to Year 6, where personalised senior school guidance and preparation support pupils as they move towards their next chapter. We remain incredibly proud of the Class of 2026, who celebrated another year of strong 11+ outcomes and exciting senior school destinations, including leading grammar schools across Kent and Bexley, alongside scholarships to independent schools. Among the highlights of the past academic year was Breaside achieving its third NACE Challenge Award accreditation, recognising our continued commitment to high-quality teaching, challenge and ambition for every pupil. From first steps to future choices, Breaside continues to nurture curious minds and limitless futures. To find out more about admissions or our upcoming Open Mornings, visit www.breaside.co.uk

Why Choose Bickley Park?

P

arents often comment on how warm and friendly our school is. They love being part of our diverse and inclusive community that quickly welcomes in new families and helps their daughters and sons settle in so quickly. My greatest hope is that all our pupils make the most of every opportunity on offer here at the school and that their years at Bickley Park inspire them to say YES to things, to give them a go, to be brave. Our aim is for all our children to ‘BE ALL YOU CAN BE’, from Nursery right through to Year 8. Outstanding Staff & Facilities It is my absolute privilege to lead such an amazing team of talented and caring staff. What’s more, from the purpose-built science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the on-site swimming pool, climbing wall and astro-turf pitches, we are lucky enough to twin a fantastically dedicated staff team with great facilities. Small Class Sizes and Excellent Results Our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter

where they lie. We aim to develop happy children with a love of learning, which is then reflected in outstanding progress. We continue to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam. Indeed our children have earned over 50 scholarships in the last two years. Preparing children to reach their potential Our well-rounded Four Quadrants of Learning encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning, which inspire a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks. Following the launch of our new pre-school and our successful move to co-education, we joined the Sevenoaks Family of Schools recently with thriving pupil numbers, a fully co-ed Pre-Prep, growing waiting lists in many year groups and having opened a third Reception class for September 2026. But don’t just take my word for it – come and see for yourself. I would love to meet you and show you around.

More Than a Watch

The hands that keep a lifetime of memories alive

A

Rolex is designed to accompany its owner throughout life. Built to exacting standards, these are watches that can be worn every day and, with the right care and regular servicing, passed down through the generations. Rolex-trained watchmakers understand this better than anyone. Every service demands exceptional technical skill and meticulous attention to detail, but it also comes with a sense of responsibility. Each watch arriving on the workbench has been part of someone’s life, and their role is to ensure it’s ready for whatever comes next. For Rolex-trained watchmaker Aaron Jones, this is what makes the work so meaningful. “Watches sit on your wrist and they experience almost everything you do,” he explains. “So when you pass that watch down, it’s not just a timepiece, it’s everything that person has experienced.” This is why watch servicing is about far more than just replacing worn components or regulating the movement. “You haven’t just serviced a watch,” Aaron says. “You’ve brought life back to something that might have experienced everything that your grandfather did, or all the times that your father held you as a child.” A Rolex service is designed to preserve both performance and longevity, ensuring the watch continues to perform exactly as intended. That commitment requires years of specialist training, meticulous attention to detail and remarkable patience. After completing a degree in horology at Birmingham City University, Aaron undertook a further 18 months of specialist Rolex training. He passed his Rolex After-Sales Service Watchmaker exams in Geneva before graduating in the UK.

3 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

“Being able to return the watch to the customer, knowing that it’s just right and it’s within all the specified tolerances, is really satisfying”

For fellow Rolex-trained watchmaker Michael Raven, that dedication comes from a deep respect for the brand itself. “I know how special a Rolex is to our clients,” he says. “Rolex is world-renowned, and synonymous with excellence. That is something that I really enjoy. I’m working on watches where excellence is front and centre.” But Michael believes the most rewarding moment comes at the end of the servicing process. “Being able to return the watch to the customer, knowing that it’s just right and it’s within all the specified tolerances, is really satisfying.” For Lee Reynolds, who has spent 33 years as a watchmaker, the appeal has never faded. “A lot of clients aren’t just purchasing a Rolex, they are purchasing an investment... and will, fingers crossed, hand it down through the generations.” Perhaps that’s what makes a Rolex unlike almost any other possession. It doesn’t simply tell the time; it bears witness to a lifetime. And thanks to the expertise of Rolex-trained watchmakers, each careful service helps ensure that the memories it carries today can continue to be treasured and passed from wearer to wearer for generations to come. To book an appointment to get your watch serviced please contact Mappin & Webb, Bluewater, DA9 9ST or email MWBluewater@mappinandwebb.com “

A new chapter for Gorringe’s in Tunbridge Wells

As part of its continued investment in the business, Gorringe’s is moving its Kent base to new, central premises in Tunbridge Wells with free parking at the entrance.

G

orringe’s has worked with collectors across Sussex and Kent since Roland Gorringe founded the firm in Lewes in 1929. Its first sale – the contents of Lewes House, home of American collector Edward Warren – included Auguste Rodin’s The Kiss, now in the Tate’s permanent collection. Its links with Kent run deep: for nearly 30 years, Gorringe’s Tunbridge Wells office has served clients across the county. The new premises, centrally located and easy to reach, have been designed around the client, with a comfortable waiting room, a private room for confidential valuations and free parking directly outside. The office will be led by Tom Blest, Head of Valuations, Kent, an auctioneer and general valuer who joined in April 2025. Recent Kent consignments include Robert Healy’s pastel portrait of Anne, 1st Countess Clancarty, which sold for £16,000, and an Art Deco diamond and onyx ring set with a Peruzzi-cut diamond of around 1.50 carats, which achieved £5,000. Coping with a Serious Injury

Practical Advice for the Road Ahead By Robert Sardo, Personal Injury Solicitor, Thomas Dunton Solicitors LLP

S

uffering a serious injury can be one of the most challenging experiences you will ever face. Whether your injury was caused by a road traffic accident, an accident at work, a fall in a public place or medical negligence, the effects can be felt long after the initial incident. Alongside physical pain and recovery, many people face emotional distress, financial pressures, and uncertainty about the future. With that in mind, I recommend taking the following steps after a serious accident: 1. Gather evidence Collect as much evidence relating to the incident as possible e.g. photographs of the accident scene, contact details of witnesses and copies of any accident reports. This information can be invaluable if a claim is pursued later. 2. Seek medical attention promptly Even if your injuries do not initially appear severe, a medical assessment can identify underlying issues and create an important record of your injuries, symptoms, and treatment. 3. Keep detailed records Retain copies of medical reports, appointment letters, receipts for expenses and details of any time taken off work. Keeping a record of how your injuries affect your daily life can also be helpful should you pursue a compensation claim.

3 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

4. Avoid rushing into a settlement The full extent of a serious injury is not always immediately apparent. Symptoms can develop over time, and long-term effects may affect your ability to work, your independence and quality of life. Seeking legal advice early helps ensure your interests are fully protected. Why Thomas Dunton? At Thomas Dunton, we understand how overwhelming life can feel after a serious injury. As a long-established local firm, we provide accessible, personal support when you need it most. Rather than dealing with a distant national claims company, you can speak directly to an experienced solicitor who understands the local community and is committed to helping local people through difficult times. We will guide you through every stage of the claims process, handling the legal complexities while you focus on your recovery. Contact Thomas Dunton Solicitors for specialist legal advice and the reassurance of having a trusted local firm by your side. Telephone: 01689 822554 or email: accident@thomasdunton.co.uk

Five things to think about before choosing your next mortgage By David Braithwaite, BBC Radio Kent’s Money Mentor and Managing Director of Citrus Financial

“At Citrus Financial, we help clients make sense of their mortgage options, whether they are buying, remortgaging or simply planning ahead.”

M

ortgages are rarely out of the headlines, but right now the market feels particularly unsettled. Many people started the year expecting interest rates to fall further. That would have been welcome news for homeowners coming to the end of a fixed-rate deal, as well as those hoping to buy. However, inflation concerns and global uncertainty mean the outlook is now less clear. That matters because mortgage lenders do not always wait for the Bank of England to act. They often move their own rates based on what they think may happen next. Deals can change quickly, sometimes with little warning. So, whether you are buying, moving home or coming to the end of your current deal, here are five things to consider. 1. Start earlier than you think If your mortgage deal ends within the next six months, it is worth looking at your options now. Leaving it too late could mean fewer choices or a move onto your lender’s standard variable rate, which may be more expensive. 2. Look beyond the headline rate The lowest rate is not always the best deal. Fees, charges, deal length and flexibility all affect the overall cost. A slightly higher rate with lower fees may work better for some borrowers.

3 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

3. Be honest about affordability It is not just about what you can afford today. Ask yourself whether the payments would still feel manageable if other household costs increased. Building in breathing space can help protect you from future shocks. 4. Get your paperwork ready Lenders may need payslips, bank statements, proof of deposit and details of existing debts. If you are self-employed, they may ask for more. Having everything ready can help avoid delays, especially if deals are withdrawn quickly. 5. Take advice before deciding It can be tempting to go direct to your bank or use a comparison site. But in a changing market, advice can make a real difference. A mortgage adviser can help you understand what is available, what is suitable, and what the true cost may be over time. At Citrus Financial, we help clients make sense of their mortgage options, whether they are buying, remortgaging or simply planning ahead. You have worked hard to buy your home. Your mortgage should work as hard as possible for you. Call 01732 834834 or visit citrusfinancial.co.uk Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Don’t let a changing mortgage market catch you out In an uncertain market, the wrong mortgage decision could cost more than you think.

Mortgages

Mortgage lenders are changing rates regularly as the outlook for inflation and interest rates remains unclear, making decisions harder for homeowners and buyers alike.

Financial Planning

The right advice could help you avoid paying more than you need to. At Citrus Financial, our mortgage advisers can help you compare your options and choose a mortgage that suits your circumstances.

Let’s make your mortgage work harder Call us for a free initial consultation and get clear, practical mortgage advice before you make your next move. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Go On, Have A Night Off

T

here are pubs you stop at for a pint, and then there are pubs that quietly persuade you to cancel whatever you were supposed to do afterwards. The Winemaker’s Pub is very much the latter. Tucked into the Kent countryside, it’s the sort of place made for settling in. There are seasonal pub classics, Sunday roasts with all the trimmings and pizzas for when something hot, crisp and covered in cheese feels like the only sensible option. At the bar, you’ll find Balfour wines alongside beers, spirits and cocktails, with wine flights for those who prefer their evening with a little exploration. And there’s no need to make an early exit. Upstairs, four boutique bedrooms mean you can stay the night, sleep off the Sunday roast and wake up with considerably less enthusiasm for the M25 than you had the day before.

For those who want to make a proper weekend of it, there’s the Balfour Wine Escape — a readymade country break that brings the pub and winery together. The experience begins at Balfour Winery, where you can spend the day among the vines, discover the wines and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the winery. Then, when the tasting is done and someone inevitably suggests another glass, our shuttle takes you to The Winemaker’s Pub for dinner, drinks and your overnight stay. The package brings everything together: a wine experience and lunch at Balfour Winery, followed by dinner and a boutique bedroom at The Winemaker’s Pub. And because we run the shuttle between the two, there’s no need to worry about the car — just concentrate on the important business of eating, drinking and enjoying yourself. It’s a rather good arrangement: a day among the vines, lunch overlooking the Kent countryside, then a country pub, a proper dinner and a very short journey to bed. A little bit of luxury, a lot of good food and wine, and no need to go very far at all. winemakespub.com | balfourwinery.com

Autumn, Christmas and cocktails at Hammond’s Wine Bar

A

s summer fades into autumn, Hammond’s Wine Bar in Oxted is getting ready for a season of great food, seasonal drinks and a generous helping of festive cheer. From 17th November, Hammond’s already famous Sunday roast gets a Christmas makeover, with turkey and all the trimmings including of course its much-loved pigs in blankets. For something different, there’s a show-stopping Beef Wellington that some say is better than the Savoy, while a roasted skate wing with brown shrimp butter offers a lighter option. Vegetarians can tuck into a rich mulled-wine Beetroot Wellington. Dessert is equally festive, with a Christmas pudding cheesecake giving the traditional pud a modern twist, alongside apple tarte tatin and salted caramel chocolate delice. Then it’s time to see in the New Year, Hammond’s-style, with a 70s and 80s-themed dinner dance. A three-course menu will revisit classics including Chicken Kiev, lobster and crayfish cocktail and Black Forest gateau, all given a contemporary twist by Head Chef Tommy Morriss. After dinner, live music from the era will get everyone onto the dance floor. 4 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

Drinks are getting a seasonal makeover too. From mid-October, Head Barman Luca introduces a range of new autumn house mocktails and cocktails including: the Fallen Pear, an autumn-spiced martini; Midnight Forest, a dark rum cocktail with cherry and chocolate notes; and Orchard Memories, a clarified cocktail inspired by the apple and blackberry crumble his nan used to make. Wine lovers can rediscover some of the reds on Hammond’s list as the evenings draw in — from silky Bulgarian Pinot Noir and full-bodied South African blends to classics from Bordeaux and the Rhône. Hammond’s is also expanding its non-wine offering with Hawkstone premium lager, IPA, 0% lager and cider. Love him or loathe him, Clarkson does make a good beer. With new seasonal set lunch, bar and main menus launching too, there are plenty of reasons to make Hammond’s Wine Bar your autumn and festive destination in Oxted. hammondswinebar.co.uk

Passionate about Turkeys Even November may, for some, feel too early to be thinking about Christmas, but for Kent Turkeys, Christmas begins in June.

B

orn and reared in their natural season the bronze turkey poults arrive at the family farm near Biddenden at just one day old at the beginning of June. They are then kept warm and cosy indoors under heat lamps with clean bedding and plenty of water and chick crumb, before getting acclimatised to life outdoors. From this point they are able to roam freely across 16 acres of Kentish pasture, rich in grass, insects and in the fresh countryside air. Overnight, the turkeys can go into secure tunnels, surrounded by fencing safe from foxes and other predators where they have straw bedding, water and specially made feed in constant and plentiful supply.

4 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

But why is this all so important? Tony Fleck owner of Kent Turkeys, has been a KellyBronze farmer for over 27 years. However, this year an exciting new chapter started where the farm continues to produce Bronze Turkeys but under their own label Kent Turkeys rather than KellyBronze. The birds continue to be reared to same strict standards, ensuring not only the highest welfare but also meat which has unrivalled taste. By hatching the turkeys in their natural season and allowing them to grow slowly and to full maturity, in hand with being free range, the turkeys lay down a natural layer of fat. When cooked, this runs through the meat, creating a moist and easy to carve turkey with beautifully textured meat, which is packed full of flavour and which creates a delicious gravy too. Great, just what you are after for one of the most anticipated meals of the year. But surely there is a catch? A tricky cooking method to follow that means hours in the kitchen? Absolutely not! Every bronze turkey from Kent Turkeys comes with full cooking instructions and a thermometer making cooking a show stopping turkey simple. Even better, the cooking time is a fraction of that of a traditional turkey, meaning not only is it easy to cook a Kent Bronze Turkey, but that you will be able to join in with the festivities and enjoy a stress free Christmas. There are options including whole turkeys, crowns, breast roasts, galantines, butterflied, as well as legs, thighs, wings, mince and turkey pies. There is something to suit all celebrations. Orders are now open with collection points across Kent including Woolpack Corner Farm itself. Visit www.kentturkeys.coluk to find out more and place your order.

The Royal Engineers Museum T

he Royal Engineers Museum is the world’s foremost museum of military engineering. Housed in our striking Grade II listed building in Gillingham, Kent, our internationally significant collection is a testament to the ingenuity, creativity and determination that have shaped both military history and the modern world. Wars are not won by courage alone. Victory is achieved through planning, innovation, logistics, perseverance and adaptation. This spirit of innovation is brought vividly to life in the Museum’s current War Winning Engineering exhibition. Drawing on original plans, artefacts and archival material, the exhibition explores the extraordinary story of the Mulberry Harbours, the temporary floating ports developed to support the D-Day landings in Normandy. The exhibition highlights the immense challenge facing Allied planners during the Second World War; how to land and sustain a vast invasion force without control of a major French port. The solution was audacious. Engineers designed

and constructed two artificial harbours, incorporating pioneering components such as Phoenix caissons, Whale roadways, Beetle pontoons and Bombardon breakwaters. Mulberry Harbours A & B and these other essential constructions were then towed across the channel toward their pivotal debarkation points at Omaha and Gold beaches respectively. These remarkable structures enabled millions of troops, vehicles and tonnes of materiel to enter mainland Europe, playing a critical role in the success of the Allied campaign. Thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, thousands of wartime blueprints, models and engineering records are being conserved and digitised, resulting in unprecedented public access to one of Britain’s greatest engineering achievements. In celebrating these achievements, the Royal Engineers Museum reminds us that engineering is often history’s hidden force. The War Winning Engineering exhibition is not simply a look back at wartime innovation. It is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when imagination, expertise and determination coalesce to overcome the greatest of challenges. To learn more, and find out how to visit us, go to www.re-museum.co.uk. We are open Tuesday-Sunday, 10.00 am - 5 pm (last entry 4.00 pm), with a myriad of family-friendly events, talks and activities running throughout the year.

WHITE ROCKS FARM

Keeping Farming Alive T

he farm is based up on the Greensand Ridge over Underriver and Bitchet Green, so the farm has spectacular views of the natural beauty of Kent. White Rocks Farm has been owned by the family for the last 60 years, currently 3 generations work on the farm. The farm is well known for its western riding and breeding quarter horses and arabs but also in that time the passion for rare breeds has increased with the farm now keeping 12 species that feature on the rare breeds survival trust watch list. The orchard is registered as organic, and the market garden is currently in conversion. The farm does not believe in using chemical fertilizers or pest repellents, so insects and nature are undisturbed.

“The shop also supports other local producers by stocking their products such as cheese, ice cream, porridge and nut oils.”

The farm plants 840 hedging trees each year, reinstating natural corridors for the wildlife as well as managing the woodland by coppicing. The farm uses its own chestnut coppice for making fence posts, furniture and charcoal. The farm has recently been granted free range status for its poultry. The animals can be seen grazing the land and woodland so have a mostly natural diet. Our pigs are award winning at agricultural shows, most recently at The Royal Norfolk Show qualifying two Pigs for The Pig of the year final in Great Yorkshire. Over the last 9 years the farm has seen a demand for local produced food and the customer base is increasing annually. In 2024, the farm put in a self-service vending machine farm shop. This allows customers to come and purchase our own produce such as apple juice, eggs and meat from our machine 24/7. The shop also supports other local producers by stocking their products such as cheese, ice cream, porridge and nut oils. The farm shop has seasonal meat in stock throughout the year such as Dexter Beef, Shropshire Down, Dorset Down and Welsh mountain lamb, Oxford Sandy and Black Pork, Golden Guernsey Goat, Bourbon Red Turkeys. Welcome to Buddha of Westerham W

e’re Holly Collens and Wei Zhao Arthur Chan, and we’re incredibly proud to have opened the doors to Buddha of Westerham here in our local community. Since opening on 21st August, we’ve been overwhelmed by the welcome we’ve received. The restaurant has been incredibly busy, and seeing so many familiar faces, as well as welcoming new ones, has been a wonderful start to what we hope will be a long journey in Westerham. Our aim with Buddha of Westerham is simple: to serve the Chinese food that we love, using great ingredients and plenty of care. Our menu focuses on classic Westernised Chinese favourites, including aromatic crispy duck, crispy shredded chilli beef and chicken chow mein – the dishes many of us know and love, but prepared with our own approach. For us, quality really matters. We don’t use MSG or artificial additives, and every dish is carefully prepared using the 6 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

ingredients and flavours that Arthur has developed throughout his career. As a Michelin-starred chef, Arthur brings a huge amount of experience and passion to the kitchen, and he believes that great food doesn’t need to rely on additives when you start with good ingredients and take the time to prepare them properly. We’ve created Buddha of Westerham to be somewhere you can enjoy more than just a meal. Our dining room seats 64 guests, and our bar is a relaxed place to meet friends, enjoy one of our cocktails or have a cold Lucky Buddha beer on tap. Of course, we know that sometimes you’d rather enjoy your dinner at home, so we also offer takeaway and delivery across Westerham and the surrounding areas. Most importantly, we want Buddha of Westerham to feel like part of the community. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received since opening and look forward to getting to know even more of our neighbours. Thank you, for making us feel so welcome. We can’t wait to see you soon. www. buddhaofwesterham.com

A New Chapter at The Grasshopper on the Green

T

here is something undeniably special about a great village pub. It is a place where history, hospitality and community come together and in Westerham, few places capture that spirit quite like The Grasshopper on the Green. Now, with new owners Mike and Nicola Vigar at the helm, this much-loved pub is beginning an exciting new chapter. Set in one of Westerham’s most picturesque locations, overlooking the town’s historic Green, The Grasshopper has been part of local life for centuries. The building dates back to the 16th century and incorporates an earlier timber-framed structure, while its distinctive name is linked to the crest of the Gresham family, who owned the Manor of Westerham from the reign of Henry VIII until the late 17th century. It is a remarkable heritage – but for Mike and Nicola, the appeal of The Grasshopper is about much more than bricks, beams and history. They see the pub as a place for people: somewhere to meet friends, enjoy good food, raise a glass and simply take time out. Their vision is to preserve everything that makes The Grasshopper special while bringing their own energy and personality to the business. From

6 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

relaxed lunches and leisurely dinners to a traditional Sunday roast, the pub offers a menu built around comforting, generous food and the pleasures of eating well. A selection of beers, ales and wines adds to the experience, while the welcoming garden and outdoor seating make the most of its enviable position. Inside, the atmosphere is quintessentially British, cosy, characterful and inviting with a log fire providing an especially warm welcome on cooler days. Families and four-legged friends are welcome too, reinforcing the sense that this is a pub designed to be enjoyed by everyone. For Mike and Nicola, becoming custodians of such an historic Westerham landmark is both an opportunity and a privilege. Their arrival marks a fresh beginning, but one firmly rooted in the traditions that have made The Grasshopper a local favourite. With its beautiful setting, fascinating history, hearty food and genuinely welcoming atmosphere, The Grasshopper on the Green is ready to write its next chapter and with Mike and Nicola Vigar leading the way, it promises to be a particularly exciting one. www.grasshopperonthegreen.pub

A New Era of Bridal Arrives to Chislehurst Village Chislehurst Bridal begins an elegant new chapter at No. 1 Royal Parade

T

here are certain addresses in Chislehurst that seem made for something special. This autumn, behind the doors of No. 1 Royal Parade, one of them begins a new story. Chislehurst Bridal is preparing to unveil its new home: a beautifully considered bridal destination created around a simple belief, that choosing what to wear for one of life’s most important days should feel every bit as memorable as the day itself. For owner Elle Sena, the move represents far more than a change of address. Since taking

6 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

“There will be timeless gowns and contemporary silhouettes, exquisite fabrics, beautiful corsetry, romantic detailing and pieces with just enough theatre.”

ownership of Chislehurst Bridal, she has spent time quietly considering what its next chapter should look and feel like. Rather than simply recreating the existing boutique elsewhere, the move offered an opportunity to begin again, respectfully retaining the warmth and heritage of a much-loved local bridal name while creating something fresh for today’s bride. And where better to do that than Chislehurst? With its village charm, beautiful architecture, and unique position where London meets Kent, Chislehurst has always managed to feel both wonderfully connected and reassuringly removed

from the rush of the city. The new boutique has been conceived in much the same spirit. Elegant, intimate and deliberately unhurried. Inside, brides will discover a carefully evolving edit of established bridal houses, selected not simply because of a label, but because of the beauty, craftsmanship and individuality each piece brings to the rails. There will be timeless gowns and contemporary silhouettes, exquisite fabrics, beautiful corsetry, romantic detailing and pieces with just enough theatre. But perhaps most importantly, there will be room to discover. Because the Chislehurst Bridal experience is not intended to begin and end with a wedding dress. The vision for No. 1 brings together the wider wedding wardrobe: bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, flower girls, second looks, finishing touches and carefully chosen accessories, allowing different generations of a wedding party to find something beautiful within one considered setting. For Elle, that wider vision is deeply connected to the emotion of a wedding. “A wedding dress is extraordinary, but when I look at wedding photographs, I’m always struck by the people around the bride too, her mother, her bridesmaids, the little flower girl, the women helping her get ready. They are all part of the memory. I want Chislehurst Bridal to understand the whole picture.”

That sentiment will shape the appointment experience too. There is no desire to turn bridal shopping into a conveyor belt. Appointments will be personal and considered, allowing time to understand the woman behind the wedding: how she wants to feel, where she is marrying, what she loves, and sometimes what she never imagined she would choose. Because very often, the magic happens somewhere between the two. The ambition for Chislehurst Bridal extends beyond the village, with the new boutique forming the foundation for a broader British bridal identity and, in time, the introduction of the house’s own designs. But its heart will remain here. At a time when so much shopping has become anonymous and online, there is something wonderfully oldfashioned, and increasingly luxurious, about being known, welcomed and beautifully looked after. That is perhaps what makes this new beginning feel particularly at home in Chislehurst. Not louder. Not bigger for the sake of being bigger. Simply more beautiful, more considered and more Chislehurst Bridal. The doors at No. 1 Royal Parade will soon open nd with them, a rather lovely new chapter for bridal in Chislehurst begins.

O

wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road. Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘ ‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me! And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service. Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs! The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’ You can contact Gail on 01233 742700 or check the website at www.inthecountrykent.co.uk

How PGT-A Helped Michelle Build Her Family

ichelle was 39 and had been trying to conceive for a year when she attended an open day at London Women’s Clinic. Hearing clinicians speak openly about age and success rates gave her the push she needed. “It made me think, if we’re serious about having a baby, we need to act now.” She began IVF soon after. Because she was approaching 40 and her partner was ten years older, they chose PGT-A, which checks embryos for the correct number of chromosomes before transfer. “If testing meant we had a better chance of success, it felt worth doing,” she says. Her first cycle produced six embryos. None were chromosomally normal. “It was devastating. You go through everything: the hormones, the procedures, the emotional toll, and to find none were usable was incredibly hard.” A Second Chance Her second cycle brought uncertain results: one mosaic embryo and one that returned no result. The embryology team offered to retest it. Michelle credits the team with supporting her when she was at her lowest and helping her look at things pragmatically. The retest showed the embryo was euploid, chromosomally normal. It was transferred that January. By Easter Michelle was celebrating her 12 week scan, and that September she and her partner welcomed a

7 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

healthy baby girl. “If we hadn’t tested again, she wouldn’t be here.” When her daughter was two, Michelle returned to LWC hoping for a sibling. Another cycle with PGT-A produced two chromosomally normal embryos, and the first transfer worked. Her son was born in November 2023, when she was 43. “PGT-A gave us the reassurance that we were giving ourselves the best possible chance,” she says. One embryo remains frozen. “My partner keeps asking about it,” she laughs, “but I’m not sure I’m ready yet!” Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is an advanced procedure used as part of IVF that analyses a small sample of cells from an embryo before transfer. It gives you and your fertility team valuable information about the chromosomal makeup of each embryo, helping to identify any that are unlikely to implant successfully or may result in miscarriage, supporting more informed decisions about which embryo to transfer.

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre celebrates one million visits and ‘Excellent’ Quest rating

S

evenoaks Leisure Centre is celebrating after welcoming one million visits while also being awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating in an independent industry assessment. The one million visits have been recorded since Everyone Active began managing the facility in May 2023. The centre, which welcomes around 36,000 visits a month, now has more than 3,000 fitness members, while 630 children, young people and adults are learning to swim there. The centre is managed by Everyone Active on behalf of Sevenoaks District Council and recently underwent a rigorous Quest assessment, achieving the highest possible rating.

Quest is the leisure industry’s leading quality assessment, with centres assessed across areas including customer experience, operations, leadership, staff development and the range of activities on offer. The assessment recognised Sevenoaks Leisure Centre’s strong operational standards, customer service and continued growth in participation. It also highlighted a broad activity programme designed to cater for different ages and abilities, from children and older people to beginners and those taking part in specialist health and wellbeing activities. These include new gym equipment, a three-storey soft play facility for children, improved pool access and the introduction of YOU+, Everyone Active’s gym and wellbeing membership, which provides personalised coaching across six areas including movement, sleep, nutrition, recovery, brain health and social wellness. Hasan Romel, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: “We’re really pleased to be celebrating two fantastic milestones at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. Achieving an Excellent Quest rating is a great reflection of the hard work of the team and the standards they set themselves every day, particularly when it comes to looking after our customers. “Reaching one million visits is another fantastic achievement and shows just how important the centre is to the local community. It was especially fitting that Julie was our millionth visitor after using the centre for more than 20 years” www.everyoneactive.com/centre/sevenoaks-leisure-centre/

BLURRED BERRY LIPS

2026’s take on the classic autumn lip swaps precision for softness, with rich berry, plum and brown-red shades diffused for a modern, just-bitten finish.

A

utumn lipstick is back, but this season it is less about perfectly defined edges and more about creating colour that looks as though it has naturally settled into the lips. The latest trend, known as Blurred Berry Lips, combines the richness of traditional autumn shades with a softer, more effortless application. Think blackberry, mulberry, cranberry, plum and deep rose, but applied with a light touch and gently diffused around the edges. The appeal lies in the contrast between intense colour and relaxed application. Rather than drawing a precise outline and filling the lips completely, pigment is concentrated towards the centre before being tapped and blended outwards.

The result is softer and slightly imperfect, giving the impression of a stain rather than a traditional lipstick. It feels romantic and sophisticated without looking overly polished. Berry shades have long been associated with autumn, but this season they have taken on a more wearable quality. Deep burgundy and wine

tones remain popular, while softer raspberry, dusty plum and brown-berry shades offer an easier introduction to the trend. Brown is particularly important for 2026, bringing a subtle ‘90s influence to the palette without recreating the heavily lined lips of the decade. Texture is just as important as colour. Modern formulas are lightweight, balmy and comfortable, allowing rich shades to be built gradually rather than appearing opaque in one application. Softmatte finishes work particularly well, giving the lips a velvety appearance without the dryness traditionally associated with matte lipstick. Sheer satin and balm formulas can also be pressed into the lips with a fingertip for an even more natural effect. The application is deliberately relaxed. Instead of starting with a perfectly sharpened lip liner, apply lipstick or lip tint to the centre of the mouth before gently pressing the lips together. Use a fingertip or small brush to soften the colour towards the outer edges, leaving no obvious line. For a stronger evening look, a matching liner can be used around the centre of the lips and then

lightly blurred rather than creating a crisp border. The rest of the face should remain fresh and uncomplicated. Skin looks natural and softly perfected, while cheeks can be given a subtle wash of rose or berry blush to connect the colour across the face. Brows are brushed and defined without looking overly sculpted, while lashes can remain relatively understated. The effect is polished enough for evening but relaxed enough to wear during the day. Blurred Berry Lips are also surprisingly versatile. A sheer raspberry stain works with minimal makeup for daytime, while deeper blackberry or burgundy can be layered for dinner or an evening event. Brown-berry shades offer an especially wearable alternative to traditional red, adding warmth and definition without feeling too formal. The trend reflects the wider shift in beauty towards makeup that looks less constructed. After years of precise lip lines, glossy finishes and highly perfected complexion makeup, blurred colour feels deliberately more human. It does not require perfect application and actually looks better when the edges are softened. Ultimately, Blurred Berry Lips offer all the drama of an autumn lipstick without the formality. Rich colour, soft edges and comfortable textures make the look easy to adapt, while the deeper palette feels perfectly suited to the season. It is a simple way to make an impact without making the rest of your makeup compete for attention.

H OUSE & GARDEN RENOVATION GUIDE

The Art of Autumn Creating a Cosier Bathroom for 2026 With bathroom design specialists, Ripples.

T

here is something about autumn that makes us look at our homes differently. As the evenings draw in and mornings become cooler, we naturally start craving spaces that feel warmer, softer and a little more comforting. Increasingly, that extends to the bathroom too. For autumn 2026, bathroom design is becoming noticeably more relaxed. The pristine, almost clinical bathroom is making way for spaces with greater depth, texture and personality, rooms that still feel beautifully considered, but are also somewhere you want to linger. Colour is playing a big part in this shift. Earthy shades are coming to the fore, from warm clay and terracotta to tobacco browns, olive greens and softer stone tones. Rather than overwhelming a scheme, these colours can be introduced through a painted vanity, statement bath or beautifully tiled shower area, bringing warmth while still allowing the room to feel calm and timeless. Materials are becoming richer too. Natural stone, timber cabinetry and tiles with variation, texture and an almost handcrafted quality can instantly soften a bathroom. The most

interesting schemes don’t necessarily match every surface or finish; instead, they layer materials in a way that feels natural and collected. Think oak against veined stone, glossy tiles beside matt finishes, or warm metallic brassware adding a subtle glow. Lighting can completely transform the mood. As daylight fades earlier, softer pools of light become particularly important. Wall lights illuminated mirrors and low-level lighting around a vanity or bath can create a much gentler atmosphere than relying on one bright ceiling light. Dimmers are especially effective, allowing the bathroom to move easily from practical morning routine to relaxing evening retreat. Wellbeing remains a major influence on bathroom design, but in 2026 it feels more personal than overtly spa-like. A deep bath, generous shower, underfloor heating or simply beautifully organised storage can all make everyday routines feel a little more restorative. And creating an autumnal bathroom doesn’t require a complete redesign. Richer towels, warm-toned accessories, a wooden stool, artwork or a favourite candle can subtly change the mood. The key is not to decorate for the season, but to create a bathroom that feels good within it: warm, tactile, quietly luxurious and exactly the kind of place you want to retreat to when it is cold outside. How to choose your next luxury bed

A

bout a third of your life is spent in that subconscious realm of dreamland. Well, depending on your daily caffeine intake, anyway. But whether you’re asleep or not, your bedroom is likely the room you spend the most time in. Which is funny because when you build the hierarchy of the home, does everyone place it at the top of the list? Is it “Let’s get the sleeping quarters figured out; the rest will follow?” Rarely. Well, it is time to sing its praises. More specifically, the piece of furniture it’s named after. The Bed. What makes a designer bed? As with anything high-end, there are two core components of a designer bed. The build quality, the aesthetic appeal and adaptability are key. None is more important than the other, but a balance of the three is paramount. The fact that a bed is such a high-use piece of design requires it to last long while remaining easy on the eye every time you see it. After all, the only thing you want looking tired at night is you before you drift off. Made of something special - Given how often you’ll use your luxury bed, you want a material that offers not just softness but longevity. I know, often not the best of friends. That is why quality matters. A supple, loose-fitting leather that moves almost like water is an ideal crossover of luxury visuals and longevity. Whereas a fabric with a high rub count is a more practical option for R 22 002266 93 00 6OO CCTTOOBBEE R

long-lasting bedroom use. Heritage and history - We’re not saying that age in this instance is a guarantee of experience. But in our world, it tends to mean there is a lot of knowledge and heritage driving both the manufacturing process and the material decisions. Shopping brands that have countless years of verifiable history when it comes to making luxury furniture ensures you’re going to have a timetested, experience-backed piece of luxury design that also comes with a household name. A good fit - The best designer beds are nothing if not versatile. The options don’t have to stop at upholstery or headboard size. Having one that

takes or liking the brand that manufactures it. This is because you can often upholster it in any choice of colour or texture from an incredibly large catalogue that fits your style and taste. Leather - As always, when investing in your furniture, leather is an unbelievably luxurious option. Its debonair visuals and often incredible attention to detail in the manufacturing process give it an air of opulence. Even the scent of fresh leather is potently high-end. It’s as if sleeping surrounded by a personal artisan creation. doubles as a side table, storage unit, and lighting solution is something that truly makes a room feel like it was tailor-made to your specifications. Like a chic 5* hotel that has been constructed for your unique tastes. Some essentially take on the role of the entire bedroom.

SIZE UP THE SITUATION: The key really is to make sure the bed sits perfectly in the middle of the scale. You don’t want to lose it against the entire sleep setting; it is the centrepiece, after all. But you also don’t want it to dominate the environment so much so much so that it negates the efforts of the entire room. Sort of a leading cast member of the ensemble. Make sure all your furniture is visible but radiates outwards around the bed

DREAM MATERIAL: We’ve discussed why quality materials are so important, but knowing which ones are available and why they’re optimal for your space is a different animal. There are no set rules, of course, but like many things in life, listening to the experts is often advisable. Wood - The classic. A staple everywhere from stately homes to Swedish apartments. It can evoke everything from grandeur to minimalism. Be carved to include intricate details or simply exist as a platform for a mattress. Metal - Lending itself mostly to an industrialstyle sleep space, metal frames tend to keep things simple. Sleek lines, ultra-supportive construction and the ideal solution if you’re looking for practical qualities in your sleep sanctuary. Metal is easy to clean and hard to damage (unless you use enough force). Fabric - The most adaptable choice you can go for. Almost infinite in its options, when buying a fabric bed, it is almost always down to the shape it 9 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

SMALL ROOMS AND GUEST BEDROOMS:

“The key really is to make sure the bed sits perfectly in the middle of the scale”

Dining rooms can welcome guests for dinner, then invite them to stay the night; WFH all of a sudden stands for waking fresh and harmonious, and falling asleep on the sofa takes on a whole new meaning. One brand that handles the world of compact living incredibly well is Clei. Their solutions offer designer sleeping and integrated technology in one precise package that opens the door (or the wall) to napping no matter the room. Where to buy? As with every considerably large piece of furniture, the best place to buy a bed is in-store. As mentioned, you’ll be spending a lot of time in each other’s presence, so before making that purchase, see it for yourself. A digital representation gives you a good idea of what to expect, but physically trying it out ensures no surprises and allows you access to the experts who can answer questions that may have never even occurred to you. chaplins.co.uk

REGATTA GARDEN FURNITURE

Bringing Indoor Comfort Outdoors

A

s our gardens increasingly become an extension of the home, the right furniture can transform an outdoor space from a simple patch of greenery into somewhere we genuinely want to spend time. Regatta Kensington Garden Furniture understands this shift, offering pieces that combine comfort, style and practicality for modern outdoor living. The appeal of a well-designed garden is not simply visual. It is about creating somewhere to slow down — enjoying a morning coffee in the sunshine, gathering friends for a long lunch or settling down with a book on a summer afternoon. Comfortable, thoughtfully designed furniture plays a central role in making those moments possible. Regatta Kensington Garden Furniture brings a relaxed, contemporary feel to outdoor spaces, with designs suited to everything from compact patios and balconies to larger terraces and traditional gardens. Whether the look is understated and elegant or more sociable and informal, the emphasis is on creating an inviting environment that feels like a natural continuation of the home. Outdoor furniture also needs to work hard. British weather can be unpredictable, making durability and easy maintenance just as

9 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

important as appearance. Choosing furniture designed with outdoor living in mind means homeowners can enjoy their investment season after season, without compromising on style. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of modern garden furniture is its ability to change how we use our outdoor spaces. A garden table becomes the setting for family meals; a comfortable chair becomes a favourite reading spot; a sofa creates a space for conversation long after dinner has finished. These are not simply furnishings — they help define how we experience our homes. As the boundaries between indoors and outdoors continue to blur, garden furniture has become an important part of contemporary lifestyle design. Regatta Kensington Garden Furniture reflects that evolution, offering a way to create outdoor spaces that are welcoming, comfortable and ready to be enjoyed. Ultimately, great garden furniture is about more than filling a space. It is about creating an invitation to step outside, sit back and make the most of the time and the garden we have. www.regattafurniture.com

PISTASHIO HOMES On the Quiet Difference a Well-considered Home Can Make

W

e are Natasha and Karishma, sisters and designers bringing the same care and attention to your home as we do with ours. Your home shapes you — your mood, your energy, how you function and feel. That belief sits at the heart of every project we take on. As a wellbeing-led design practice, we create bespoke homes designed around how you actually live — the routines, the rhythms, the small daily moments that make a house feel like your home. With considered, sensory design, we notice how light falls through a window, the texture of a fabric, and the way a room can hold you at the end of a long day. Each detail is chosen with care. Each working with the next. The result is a home that makes you feel better, live better and come home better. Case study: Project Bluefern A Victorian flat, made to live larger A young couple came to us with a two-bed Victorian conversion that was quietly wearing on them. Free standing wardrobes wedged into the alcoves, losing inches on every side. Tall ceilings sitting unused. An oversized bed leaving barely space to walk around it. Venetian blinds that let the morning light in too sharply affecting sleep quality, and never quite giving the sense of privacy they wanted. We took the project on from concept to completion — designing, sourcing, and managing the renovation at every stage.

We started with listening and understanding the small daily frictions of their home and how to solve them. We designed bespoke built-in wardrobes to the full ceiling height transforming both the storage and the feel of the room. A right-sized ottoman bed added quiet storage underneath. A mustard-yellow upholstered headboard brought an unexpected lift with a complementary colour palette for the rest of the room. Layered curtains and black out roman blinds softened the sash windows with light, warmth and privacy. In the kitchen, a considered new galley layout finally made cooking a pleasure. The space is now used, rather than endured. Client’s own words: “We sleep better. We move around the room without thinking. Everything has a place. It’s the small things we didn’t know we were missing.” www.pistashiohomes.com

Whether you are looking for some hedging transplants to infill a native hedge or a pleached tree to act as a centrepiece in your garden, Golden Hill Nurseries can help you. Roger has been involved in horticulture for over 50 years and there isn’t much he doesn’t know when it comes to plants. In addition to this, the nursery is home to Signature Hydrangeas, which grows over 250 varieties of this much-loved plant, the largest selection in the UK.

We supply both the retail and trade market, often working with small landscapers and garden designers to assist and advise them on their planting schemes. Local deliveries are made with our own transport, and we offer a nationwide delivery service via DPD. Most of our plants are grown on the nursery, although we do import certain items from some of the best nurseries in Europe. We are fervent believers in growing plants as nature intended and so we do not force any plants in artificial conditions. We avoid where possible any chemicals to control pests, choosing instead to utilise natural predators to control them. Looking forward to 2027, we are returning to the production of a range of herbaceous plants, something we stopped when the Covid pandemic hit the country. In addition to this, we also grow a limited range of bedding and vegetable plants in season, although these are for the local market only. Our advice is always free and we are open for business Monday to Saturday, from 8am until 5pm in the Spring & Summer and 8am until 4pm during the winter months. www.goldenhillplants.com

Redefining Outdoor Living F

or many homeowners, the garden has traditionally been viewed as something to admire from inside the house. Today, that mindset is changing. Outdoor spaces are no longer an afterthought— they are becoming an essential extension of the home, designed for entertaining, relaxing and creating lasting memories with family and friends. At Life Outdoors, we believe exceptional outdoor living begins with understanding how people want to live, not simply what they want to buy. While premium pergolas, bespoke outdoor kitchens and high-performance BBQs form the foundation of many projects, it is the lifestyle they enable that truly matters. Every property has its own character, and every client has their own vision. Our approach is to listen first, design with purpose and deliver spaces that feel like they have always belonged. Rather than offering a catalogue of products, we create tailored outdoor environments that seamlessly complement both the architecture of the home and the way our clients enjoy spending their time. As homes continue to evolve, outdoor living has become one of the most valuable investments a homeowner can make. A thoughtfully designed outdoor space enhances not only the appearance and value of a property but also the quality of everyday life. Whether it’s hosting summer gatherings beneath a beautifully crafted pergola,

At Life Outdoors, we see ourselves as more than suppliers and installers. We work with homeowners to create outdoor spaces that bring people together and make everyday life that little bit more special. Interior design and project management by The Griff Edit

Who Is Really Running Your Renovation? Why Good Design Needs a Good Plan Behind It By Dana Griffith, The Griff Edit

E

very renovation starts with a lovely idea and a Pinterest board to match. The plans are drawn, the trades are booked, and all that’s left is to move out for a few months and come home to something beautiful. That dream didn’t materialise for Mrs B. She called me a month into her side extension. The project had quietly spread into other rooms without anyone revisiting the brief, and she was fielding questions from the builder and the kitchen and bathroom trades, each working from a different version of the plan. In truth, no one was running it. What she wanted was simple: someone to act as a buffer, help her make decisions to prevent further delays, and give her confidence that her vision was being followed accurately. We started by revisiting the design and how the family use the house, because a layout that works on paper can feel quite different once you’re living in it. One extra window to bring light into the kitchen and a few smaller tweaks later, the new rooms felt like part of the home. I then sat down with the contractor to find where communication

1 0 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

was breaking down, and we rebuilt the schedule so trades stopped overlapping and were clear on the scope of works. Finally, we matched every supplier order to the plan. Living through a renovation is a vulnerable time, and Mrs B’s worry about the timeline was understandable. I set the completion date later than anyone wanted, because nearly twenty years of running complex programmes at City law firms has taught me that something always goes wrong, so you plan for it. Law firms and homes both need the right people doing the right thing at the right time. Mrs B went back to business travel, and the date held. If you take one thing from Mrs B’s story, make it this: never allow a trade on site until everyone is working from the same itemised scope of works. It’s the least glamorous document in any renovation, and in Mrs B’s case it made all the difference. The trades left on schedule, the house is calm again, and Sunday lunch has moved into the extension. Good design gets you the vision. Good planning gets you there, and Mrs B would tell you the second matters just as much as the first.

PICKLEBALL The UK’s New Racket-Sport Favourite

A

s summer gives way to autumn and the evenings begin to draw in, one sport shows no sign of cooling down. Pickleball is rapidly becoming one of the UK’s most talked-about racket sports, and Martin Gurr Tennis Courts is helping clubs, schools, leisure facilities and private clients meet the growing demand for quality places to play. Combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, pickleball has an appeal that crosses generations. It is easy for newcomers to pick up, while still offering plenty of challenge for experienced racket-sport players. Its smaller court size also makes it an attractive option for organisations looking to make the most of existing outdoor space. For Martin Gurr Tennis Courts, the rise of pickleball is a natural extension of its longstanding expertise in the design, construction and maintenance of sports courts. The company can provide a complete service, from initial consultation and site assessment through to court design, construction, surfacing and professional line marking. Importantly, a new pickleball facility doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. Martin Gurr can advise on ways to adapt suitable existing tennis or multi-use courts, creating pickleball facilities while making efficient use of available space. For 1 1 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

clubs and community facilities in particular, this flexibility can make introducing the sport a practical proposition. The changing seasons also highlight the importance of choosing experienced court specialists. Outdoor facilities have to cope with the UK’s often unpredictable weather, and appropriate construction, quality surfacing and regular maintenance all play a role in keeping courts looking good and performing well. Martin Gurr Tennis Courts can also provide ongoing maintenance and resurfacing services, helping protect an investment long after installation. As autumn arrives, the pickleball boom shows little indication of slowing. More players are discovering the social and active nature of the game, while organisations are recognising its potential to bring new users through their doors. For anyone considering adding pickleball to an existing sports facility or creating a dedicated court, Martin Gurr Tennis Courts offers the expertise, practical advice and endto-end service needed to turn an idea into a quality playing facility. This autumn, it seems, the future of British racket sport could be looking decidedly pickle-shaped. www.martingurr.co.uk

n an era where online shopping and flat-pack convenience dominate the retail landscape, independent furniture specialists continue to offer something increasingly valuable: personality, expertise and genuine customer service. London Road Furniture sits just opposite Fort Halstead on the A224, before its descent towards Sevenoaks and Otford, with easy parking on site. The business has a long and distinguished history. Originally established in 1987 under the name Farningham Oak in the village of Farningham, it has spent almost four decades building a reputation for quality, reliability and exceptional customer care. Owners Teresa and Peter bring more than forty years of experience to the industry, offering

customers the kind of knowledge and expertise that can only come from a lifetime dedicated to furniture retail. In fact, there is a good chance that you, your parents or someone you know has purchased furniture from them over the years. That level of recognition is no accident. It is the result of decades spent providing quality products, honest advice and a personal service that encourages customers to return time and again. They promise to match or beat the price of any other retailer or online supplier on the same product. As homeowners continue to place greater emphasis on comfort, craftsmanship and thoughtful interior design, London Road Furniture stands as a reminder that experience, quality and genuine customer care never go out of fashion. Nearly forty years after first opening its doors, the business continues to help customers create homes they can be proud of. Where Craft Meets Contemporary Tile Design I

n an era of soulless national DIY sheds and generic retail parks, there is something increasingly rare about a specialist showroom that has occupied the same corner of a community for over a quarter of a century. Located on London Road in Dunton Green, Freelands Tiles has been a fixture of the Kent design landscape since 1999, quietly establishing itself as one of the largest independent tile specialists in the county. The business is defined by a curated approach to sourcing. Twice a year, the team travels to Italy and Spain—the traditional heartlands of ceramic production—to hand-pick ranges that are often imported exclusively for their Sevenoaks showroom. This international perspective is balanced by a commitment to British manufacturing, with the company stocking prominent homegrown names such as Original Style and Ca’ Pietra. The result is a collection that spans the practical and the artisanal, from large-format porcelain to hand-finished decorative pieces. A particular area of expertise lies in the supply of traditional Victorian floor tiles. These intricate geometric patterns are a hallmark of British period properties, but their complexity requires careful planning. To assist with this, Freelands offers a bespoke CAD (Computer-Aided Design) service specifically for Victorian tile projects. By producing detailed digital layouts, they allow clients to visualise exactly how specific colours, borders, and patterns

1 1 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 6

will fit within the unique dimensions of their hallway or porch before any orders are finalised. However, the scale of the inventory—frequently cited as the widest selection in the area—is only half the story. The showroom’s longevity is largely attributed to a level of technical expertise that is almost impossible to find within a highstreet chain. With over a century of combined experience, the staff operate less as sales assistants and more as consultants, offering guidance on everything from the intricacies of wetroom tanking to the nuances of natural stone maintenance. As the industry shifts further towards automated, faceless commerce, Freelands Tiles remains a compelling argument for the physical showroom. It is a place where professional tradespeople and local homeowners alike can find not just the materials they require, but the genuine expertise necessary to use them effectively. In Dunton Green, it seems, the art of the specialist is alive and well. For more information Phone us on 01732 459765 or visit our website www.freelands-tiles.co.uk

Autumn Is Here – And So Are the Unwanted Guests A

s the leaves begin to turn and the evenings draw in, autumn brings plenty to look forward to – crisp mornings, cosy evenings and the unmistakable feeling that winter is just around the corner. But for homeowners and businesses across Kent and London, the changing season can also bring some rather unwelcome visitors. As temperatures fall, rodents and other pests begin looking for somewhere warm, dry and sheltered to spend the colder months. Loft spaces, garages, sheds, outbuildings and even the smallest gaps around a property can suddenly become attractive accommodation. Mice and rats are particularly resourceful, making autumn the ideal time to check your property before a small problem becomes a much bigger one. That is where Maidstone-based Sabre Kent Pest Control can help. A family-run business established in 2013, Sabre Kent brings more than 60 years of combined industry experience to domestic and commercial pest control throughout Kent and London. The team deals with a wide range of pests, including rodents, insects, birds and foxes, offering tailored solutions designed around the individual property and problem.

“So, while autumn may be the season for getting cosy, it is worth making sure you are not inadvertently offering pests a warm place to stay” THE DETAILS Sabre Kent Ltd Wares Farm, Redwall Lane, Linton Maidstone, Kent. Autumn is also a good reminder that prevention can be just as important as treatment. Simple measures such as checking for gaps around doors and windows, securing food and waste, keeping gardens and outbuildings tidy, and looking for signs of nesting can all help make a property less inviting to pests. Sabre Kent takes a professional and humane approach to pest control, following industry best practice and BPCA-approved practices. The company also offers free on-site surveys and noobligation estimates, helping customers understand the problem and the most appropriate solution before proceeding. So, while autumn may be the season for getting cosy, it is worth making sure you are not inadvertently offering pests a warm place to stay. From Maidstone across Kent and into London, Sabre Kent Pest Control is on hand to help keep homes and businesses protected as the seasons change. After all, there is nothing wrong with welcoming autumn – just make sure you are not welcoming its unwanted guests too. Great Picture Lighting Will Bring Your Fine Art to Life

A

great painting deserves more than simply a place on the wall. It deserves to be seen as the artist intended — its colours, textures and subtle details revealed with clarity, while retaining the atmosphere and character of the room in which it hangs. This is where picture lighting becomes an art in its own right. Lighting has the power to transform how we experience works of art. It can reveal craftsmanship, create intimacy and guide the eye, while respecting the character of the surrounding space. Picture lighting is particularly effective because it directs illumination onto the artwork without flooding the entire room with light. A welldesigned picture light can reveal the richness of an oil painting or watercolour, picking out textures, brush strokes and subtle variations in colour. The result should feel natural rather than theatrical — supporting the artwork, not competing with it. 12 0 2 OC CTTOOBBE ER R2 022062 6

In heritage interiors, this balance is especially important. Historic rooms often contain layers of colour, material and craftsmanship, so introducing contemporary lighting requires sensitivity. The fitting should complement its surroundings while the quality and direction of light enhance what is already there. Conservation is equally important. Paintings and historic materials can be vulnerable to prolonged exposure to excessive light. Advances in LED technology allow excellent colour rendering to be combined with greater control over intensity, heat and potentially damaging wavelengths, helping balance visual appreciation with preservation. Ultimately, the finest picture lighting is lighting we barely notice. The artwork takes centre stage, revealing details that might otherwise remain hidden and encouraging us to look for longer. At Heritage Lighting Matters, we offer four distinct ranges of picture lights in a variety of styles and finishes, alongside LED Upgrade Kits for existing fittings. Where traditional picture lights are unsuitable, solutions include Framing Projectors, Wall Washers, Uplighters and Remote Track Lighting — all following the same principles at the heart of our picture lighting technology.
