ALAN DAVIES: THINK AHEAD

He thinks he’s Marty McFly but he’s older than Doc Brown. He spends more time in the pharmacy than the gym. Subject to relentless eye rolls from his kids. What is he? A late middle-aged stand up on tour for the first time in a decade. Funnier than ever, he says. Alan Davies is a critically acclaimed stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and TV personality. He is a staple of British television, known for his performance as the eponymous hero of David Renwick’s hugely popular, long-running TV series Jonathan Creek, and as a permanent panellist on QI. His talk show, Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, recently reached its seventh season. He is also one of the UK’s best-loved comedians. His stand-up show Urban Trauma ran in London’s West End and Life is Pain and Little Victories sold out in venues across the UK. His second memoir, Just Ignore Him was published in 2020 and the third instalment will be published later this year.

SUSIE DENT - WORD PERFECT

Following on from her hit show ‘The Secret Life of Words’, Susie Dent is back with a brand-new collection of facts and stories from the wonderful world of words. Have you ever wondered whether there’s a word for going to the fridge for the umpteenth time in search of something new? Or puzzled over the reason why a group of crows is called a ‘murder’, while owls form a ‘parliament’? Is teen slang actually designed to make us tear our hair out? And just how many words do we need for being drunk? With the help of funny, insightful, and headscratching examples, Susie will entertain and educate us with her pick of language’s greatest hits. Word Perfect will remind us just how unpredictable, wayward, and utterly magical our mother tongue can be.

Reaching New Heights Building a Climbing Community in the Heart of Bromley

We opened the doors to Rhino Boulder in December 2023, with a simple dream: to create a space where anyone regardless of age or background could experience the thrill of climbing. Less than two years later, that dream is becoming a reality. Our state-of-the-art indoor bouldering gym, located right in the heart of Bromley, has become more than just a place to climb. It’s a community hub and a place where people push their limits, connect with others, and discover a sport that’s as rewarding for the mind as it is for the body.

Why Bouldering?

Over the past decade, the climbing discipline of bouldering has exploded in popularity across the UK, and it’s easy to see why. Forget the monotony of the treadmill or the intimidating racks of a traditional gym – bouldering is a full-body workout and it’s fun! It builds strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination while giving your brain a problemsolving challenge with every boulder you tackle. The beauty of bouldering lies in its simplicity. Climbs are set over safety mats to a maximum heights on 4.5 meters: no ropes, no harnesses, no intimidating technical barriers, all you need is a pair of climbing shoes and some chalk. It’s accessible to everyone, whether you’re four or seventy-four, a complete beginner or a seasoned “crusher” looking for your next challenge.

Beyond the physical benefits, there’s something deeply rewarding about the mental side of climbing Each boulder is like a puzzle, demanding focus, strategy, and perseverance. In a world that often feels overwhelming, the meditative state of being “in the zone” on the wall offers a rare moment of clarity and calm.

A Community That Lifts You Higher

Climbing isn’t just about the moves you make on the wall, it’s about the people you meet along the way. At Rhino Boulder, we see this every single day. Strangers connect with each other on the mats, share tips on tricky moves, and celebrate victories together. It’s a space where friendships thrive. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen people meet their future climbing partners and make lifelong friends right here in our gym.

This supportive environment is what makes bouldering unique. There’s no rivalry, no ego. When someone tops a climb, everyone around them shares in the success. It’s a sport that brings people together, creating a sense of belonging and community that’s increasingly rare in modern life.

From Bromley to the World Stage

While Rhino Boulder is all about making climbing accessible to everyone, we’re constantly inspired by the incredible athletes who have taken this sport to its highest level – literally. Two of Team GB’s Olympic climbers hail from right here in the South East. Erin McNeice, a rising star from Kent, represented team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympics where she claimed 5th place. She has shown that passion and dedication can take you from your local climbing wall all the way to competing on the world stage. And then there’s Toby Roberts, from neighbouring Surrey, who made history by winning Olympic gold in Paris. Their journeys are proof that greatness can grow from humble beginnings – maybe even from a first climb here at Rhino Boulder.

“Whether you’re looking to build strength, clear your mind, meet new people, or simply try something new, Rhino Boulder is ready to welcome you”

For the young climbers in our community, seeing local athletes like Erin and Toby achieve global success is incredibly motivating. It’s a reminder that the sport they love isn’t just a hobby; it’s a pathway to dreams they might never have thought possible.

How to Get Started

We run instructed sessions for ages 4 and up, led by our nationally qualified instructors. These sessions are all about fun, safety, and learning the basics in a supportive environment. For teens and adults aged 16yrs+ it’s even easier: just turn up, register and get climbing!

Rhino is less than five minutes’ walk from Bromley South station, with quick connections to both central London and Kent. And for those who prefer to drive, there’s a large car park right above us, so getting here couldn’t be easier.

Join the Movement

As we watch the next generation of climbers discover the sport, and perhaps even dream of following in the footsteps of athletes like Erin McNeice and Toby Roberts, we’re reminded of why we started this journey. Climbing has the power to change lives, to foster resilience, and to create connections that last a lifetime.

Whether you’re looking to build strength, clear your mind, meet new people, or simply try something new, Rhino Boulder is ready to welcome you.

The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway

Sittingbourne’s Steam Railway has been operating for over 100 years between the former paper mills site at Sittingbourne to the active paper mill at Kemsley, it has been preserved for over half of that period.

Using the original locomotives, coaches and wagons on the original line, it operates every Sunday and Bank Holiday from April until the end of September.

The Season closes at the end of September with the Railway 200 Gala Weekend, which will feature a mix of steam, diesel, passenger and mixed passenger

& freight trains. The Railway’s Writer in Residence will also be there to explain what he does and his plans for the closed period.

As we approach 2026, the timetable for next year is being developed and there is an ambitious plan to hold a special event twice a month - a big event at the end of the month and something smaller on Sundays halfway through the month.

The Railway will provide the trains and passengers but it is looking for other groups to ‘put on a show’ - contact admin@sklr.net for more details.

In the meantime, whilst the Railway is closed for maintenance, more hands make light work so if you can spare some time to help at the Railway (no experience required) we can get through some of the ever-growing list of tasks that need to be carried out before Christmas or by April to keep the Railway safe and well maintained. Work Weekends will be held every fortnight in the off-season period so these are a good time to come along to see how you can make a difference.

Why choose EFG for your flight training?

Michael

Shaw, Student Pilot at EFG tells us more

EFG stuck out for several reasons, locality; it’s only a 30 minute drive from myself, with great local transport links. Its location is key being at Biggin Hill means that you learn how to speak to full ATC, with a tarmac runway, which gets you literate from the get go.

When I visited the school I was struck with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There is a mix of experienced instructors, from varied backgrounds, including current and ex airline pilots.

What did you find challenging?

Keeping motivated during changeable weather over winter! I used this time focus on the 9 theory exams, so that when the weather improved, I could concentrate on the flying.

The most testing aspect of my practical flight training was speaking to Gatwick whilst transiting their airspace. This is exceptionally busy airspace, so you must be on your game by being aware and present. Despite this you are rewarded with some fantastic views.

What was your favourite part?

The first solo, it is something that is engrained in your memory. My first solo was at Southend Airport, this is where the training comes together and you can appreciate the progress you have made.

“My

What was your most memorable dual flight?

My most memorable dual flight was landing away at Goodwood. Landing in the middle of the race track you get an idea of how bizarre aviation can be. Also standing next to the Goodwood Motor Circuit where the Goodwood Revival takes place.

What advice would you give other students?

Listen to your instructors! They always know best. I recall panicking in my mock skills test, thinking that everything was going wrong. However, I ended up nailing the skills test with examiner Roger Patterson. Think about it, the instructor has hundreds of hours and even hundreds of students passed. They know what they are doing, you’re in good hands.

What are your next steps?

I am proud to have achieved my PPL in just under one year and 62 hours flying. My aspiration is to be a commercial pilot. My next steps include starting my ATPL theory and hour building, I require 25 hours PIC before I can commence the IR(R), which I look forward to completing at EFG.

THE ALGARVE’S QUIET SEASON: Slow Living and Creative Indulgence at Four Seasons Fairways

When the summer crowds retreat and the Algarve settles into its gentler rhythm, a subtler side of Portugal’s southern coast comes alive. Bathed in soft light and stillness, this is a season of space, warmth and indulgence, cherished by locals and sought out by travellers who know the magic of visiting when life slows down. At the heart of Quinta do Lago, Four Seasons Fairways offers the perfect sanctuary from which to experience it all.

Through Autumn and into Winter, the Algarve reveals its quieter charms. The weather softens to a comfortable warmth, perfect for long walks, leisurely afternoons outdoors, and unhurried meals al fresco. Empty beaches stretch for miles, trails wind quietly through pine forests and the sunsets feel endless. With fewer crowds, every moment is easier, calmer, more indulgent.

At Four Seasons Fairways, that rhythm is woven into the very design. The villa-style accommodation balances the privacy of a retreat

with the thoughtful service of a boutique hotel. Spacious, beautifully appointed and complete with private pools or Jacuzzis, each home-from-home invites you to linger. It’s the kind of place where morning coffee on the terrace feels like a ritual and evenings can be as simple as preparing local produce in your own kitchen or letting someone else do the cooking entirely.

Wellness here is unrushed and deeply restorative. The indoor pool, sauna and serene treatment rooms are made for moments of reset, while yoga, Pilates and fitness classes are there when you crave movement. Nothing hurried, nothing forced. Food takes centre stage in this slower season. At VIVO, breakfast stretches into the day with seasonal fruit, fresh juices and expertly made coffee. Dinner at Amara feels quietly elegant, with refined takes on Portuguese flavours, panoramic views and

wines from across the region. Beyond the resort, dining is a lingering affair, long seafood lunches overlooking the ocean, or wine-soaked evenings that unfold at their own pace.

This is also the perfect time for discovery. Nearby, Loulé Criativo invites you to step into the world of artisans: weaving palm and cane, crafting ceramics or jewellery, or learning how figs are transformed into delicate sweet and savoury creations. Wine lovers can join the grape harvest at Quinta da Tôr, while cultural explorers can wander the watermills of the Pólo Museológico da Água or the studios of the Palácio Gama Lobo, where creativity is celebrated in all its forms. And for those who prefer the outdoors, there are worldclass golf courses, peaceful boardwalks across the Ria Formosa, and endless coastal paths alive with migrating birds.

This season in the Algarve isn’t about doing more, it’s about feeling more. It’s time to embrace space, breathe deeper and rediscover the pleasure of simple things: a sunset glass of wine, a handmade keepsake, or the quiet luxury of a day lived entirely at your own pace. At Four Seasons Fairways, every detail is designed to let you sink into that rhythm. The Algarve’s quiet season lingers long in memory, an invitation to slow down, savour, and return to what matters most.

The right support makes all the difference

With growing financial pressures and multiple options available online, it is unsurprising the number of people attempting to manage legal matters without professional help is rising.

While a ‘do it yourself’ approach may suit simple, uncomplicated matters, we always advise using a solicitor, especially for cases involving significant assets, children, or potential disagreements. Here, Thomas Dunton Solicitors discuss the risks of ‘DIY law.’

Among the many cases being attempted alone are disputes, e.g. property-related conflicts and employee/employer disagreements. Similarly, when it comes to family law and planning for your future, a simple search online will return several ‘quick and easy’ ways to write your own will, start divorce proceedings, and/or draft a prenuptial or cohabitation agreement, to name just a few examples.

The legal world is littered with complexity and it is easy to fall into traps without the right guidance – sometimes irrevocably

“The legal world is littered with complexity and it is easy to fall into traps without the right guidance – sometimes irrevocably compromising your own position”

compromising your own position. Time and time again we find clients caught by the false economy of doing it ‘cheaply’ or by themselves, resulting in additional time and money to rectify any mistakes made along the way.

Why use a solicitor?

We can’t deny that using a solicitor is often the more expensive option, but when you visit a legal professional, you are paying for

peace of mind that their knowledge and experience will help you get it right first time. In our experience, a solicitor will nearly always save you time, money and stress in the long run. For many, that is invaluable.

Why Thomas Dunton?

Seastay Sets The Standard For Dog-Friendly Coastal Holidays

For many pet owners, a holiday doesn’t feel complete without their four-legged friends. That’s why Seastay has become a go-to choice for dog-friendly breaks, offering beautiful coastal escapes where dogs are not only welcome but celebrated.

With almost half of its property portfolio welcoming dogs, Seastay has created the perfect balance between stylish seaside accommodation and pet-friendly practicality. Each home has been carefully selected to make travelling with dogs simple and stress-free. Think enclosed gardens for safe play, easy-clean interiors for sandy paws, and thoughtful touches such as treats included in the welcome hamper.

But it’s the location that makes us so truly special. Nestled along one of the UK’s most breathtaking stretches of coast, East Kent is a paradise for dogs and their owners. Miles of sandy beaches—many of which are dog-friendly all year round—offer the perfect backdrop for games of fetch, splashing in the surf, and windswept seaside strolls. Beyond the beach, rolling countryside, woodland trails, and clifftop walks promise endless adventures for every kind of canine explorer.

The local community is just as welcoming, with pubs, cafés, and shops that go out of their way to make dogs feel at home. From water bowls and biscuits at the bar to dog-friendly attractions and walking routes, visitors never need to leave their companions behind.

“Dogs are such an important part of family life, you would not leave a child behind for a family holiday so why your dog?” says Alistair, founder of Seastay “We wanted to create holidays that celebrate that bond, where every member of the family—two or fourlegged—feels at home. Guests love the freedom and peace of mind that comes with knowing their pets are truly welcome.”

With demand for pet-friendly holidays on the rise, Seastay’s commitment to offering stylish yet practical dog-friendly stays sets it apart. Whether it’s sandy paws, salty air, or simply time spent together, Seastay ensures every holiday is unforgettable—for both dogs and their humans.

Why inertia is costing us more than we think

In uncertain times, it’s tempting to delay financial decisions. But with inflation rising again, the UK facing its highest tax burden in decades, and more tax hikes expected in the Autumn Statement, doing nothing could end up costing you more than you think.

Here are five things worth checking, especially if you’ve never spoken to a financial adviser before: 1. Are you missing out on tax allowances?

From ISAs and pension contributions to dividend and capital gains allowances, many of these are use-it-or-lose-it. Missing out could mean paying more tax than you need to.

2. Is your cash working as hard as it could?

Money sitting in low-interest savings is losing value in real terms. Depending on your situation, investing may help your money keep pace with inflation and grow.

3. Could you be paying less on your mortgage? With rates changing regularly, reviewing your deal when it ends (ideally six months before it ends) could save you money. Don’t assume your lender will offer you the best option.

4. Do you have old pensions sitting idle? Lots of people have pensions from previous jobs they’ve lost track of. Reviewing and possibly consolidating them can give you more control and transparency.

5. Are your plans still fit for purpose? Life changes — so should your financial plans. What worked five years ago might not be the best approach now.

At Citrus Financial, we help people gain clarity, confidence and control over their money. We start with a simple conversation.

Make your money work harder. Call us for a free initial consultation and get some clarity, confidence, and control over your finances. Call 01732 757616 or visit citrusfinancial.co.uk

Shaping bright futures

For over 140 years Bromley High School

GDST has provided an exceptional learning environment for bright and talented girls aged 4 to 18 years old, where they can explore, grow and learn without limits. Our aim is that pupils achieve excellent academic results and carry the confidence, skills and vision to shape bright futures.

Celebrating outstanding results

Dedicated teaching staff and a wide-ranging curriculum enable each girl to reach her full potential. Girls consistently achieve outstanding results across a range of subjects. This year, A level pupils achieved 62% at grades A*-A grades, rising to 87% for A*-B grades, with 97% securing their preferred choice of university. Year 11 pupils celebrated an excellent set of GCSEs, with 52% grades 9-8 and 71% grades 9-7.

Experiencing a broad range of co-curricular activities

With over 90 clubs and societies – ranging from Sports and Music to Drama and Debating, and lots more - pupils have plenty of opportunities to develop new skills and find their passions.

Feeling happy and valued

To succeed, pupils need to feel happy and valued. Pastoral support runs throughout and includes a range of initiatives such as peer mentoring, activities in our wellbeing hub and dedicated PSHE lessons. This has resulted in the school being awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools in 2024.

“Dedicated teaching staff and a wide-ranging curriculum enable each girl to reach her full potential”

Enjoying fantastic facilities

With 25 acres of green space, pupils have room to breathe and grow. Specialist facilities include science labs, digital hubs, art, design and food technology studios, performance spaces and a Forest School. Girls across the school have access to the excellent sporting facilities on site – a 25-metre indoor pool, a fitness suite and a full-sized astroturf – supporting their wellbeing and teamwork.

Cultivating a sense of belonging and sisterhood

The school community thrives on the shared values of Curiosity, Compassion and Courage, creating a warm and positive place for learning and an environment where girls lift and support each other. This continues long after they finish school with support from the GDST’s Alumnae network of over 100,000 inspiring women.

Why Choose Bickley Park?

Parents often comment on how warm and friendly our school is. They love being part of our diverse and inclusive community that quickly welcomes in new families and helps their daughters and sons settle in so quickly.

My greatest hope is that all our pupils make the most of every opportunity on offer here at the school and that their years at Bickley Park inspire them to say YES to things, to give them a go, to be brave. Our aim is for all our children to ‘BE ALL YOU CAN BE’, from Nursery right through to Year 8.

Outstanding Staff & Facilities

It is my absolute privilege to lead such an amazing team of talented and caring staff. What’s more, from the purpose-built science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the on-site swimming pool, climbing wall and astro-turf pitches, we are lucky enough to twin a fantastically dedicated staff team with great facilities.

Small Class Sizes and Excellent Results

Our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie. We aim to develop happy children with a love of learning, which is then reflected in outstanding progress. We continue to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam.

Preparing children to reach their potential

Our well-rounded Four Quadrants of Learning encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning, which inspire a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks.

It is this firm commitment to all-round success which saw us being shortlisted in September 2025 for Independent Prep School of the Year and led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judging Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in all areas in March 2023, the highest possible grading for an Independent School.

But don’t just take my word for it – come and see for yourself. I would love to meet you and show you around.

Meet the Head

This month, Alex Brewer, Head of Sixth Form at St Dunstan’s College, shares how the school has established itself as one of the nation’s leading independent schools.

St Dunstan’s Sixth Form has been achieving record-breaking A Level results in recent years – what do you feel has driven this success?

Our success comes from the balance we strike between intellectual rigour and personal development. Students benefit from smaller classes, expert teaching, and targeted support, but also from an ethos that encourages them to think boldly, question deeply, and enjoy learning. By fostering independence and resilience alongside academic mastery, we help them to achieve their very best results.

“Our success comes from the balance we strike between intellectual rigour and personal development”

The College’s ethos is “Excellence. Differently.” – how does that philosophy come to life in the Sixth Form experience?

At St Dunstan’s, excellence is never defined by grades alone. “Excellence. Differently.” means combining academic ambition with moral purpose and the courage to innovate. Our Diploma programme embodies this, ensuring that students grow as thinkers, leaders, and compassionate citizens through strands such as Inspired Minds, True Character, and Global Futures.

How has the Sixth Form transformed in recent years, and what impact has that had on students and outcomes?

The introduction of the St Dunstan’s Diploma has been transformative. It has embedded academic stretch, personal growth, and future readiness into the daily life of every student. As a result, our Sixth Formers leave not only with outstanding results, but also with the skills, confidence, and integrity to thrive at university and beyond.

Beyond exam results, what makes life in the Sixth Form at St Dunstan’s unique compared with other schools in London?

Life here is dynamic and outward-looking. Students lead assemblies, curate festivals, volunteer locally, and engage with the cultural richness of London. They compete nationally, publish in academic journals, and learn from alumni leaders. This combination of intellectual challenge and real-world opportunity makes the experience uniquely vibrant.

Sixth Form is often a bridge between school and university or the world of work – how do you prepare your students for the next step?

Global Futures is central to our preparation. From Oxbridge masterclasses to mock interviews, national competitions, and career pieces with employers and universities, students are supported to match ambition with

readiness. They also develop practical life skills— from managing finances to leading projects— ensuring they leave us fully equipped for the challenges ahead.

What kind of young people leave the St Dunstan’s Sixth Form, and what do you hope they carry with them from their time here?

Our alumni leave as confident, capable, and compassionate young adults. They carry not only excellent academic results, but also resilience, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose. Above all, we hope they leave with the courage to think independently, act responsibly, and make a meaningful contribution to the world.

Beckenham’s Best Kept Secret

This month, we speak to Tom Carter, Head at St Christopher’s The Hall about what makes the prep school such a special place.

St Christopher’s The Hall is part of the St Dunstan’s Education Group, which champions the ethos of “Excellence. Differently.” – what does that phrase mean to you, and how do you see it coming to life here at St Christopher’s?

For me, “Excellence. Differently.” is a powerful phrase. It reminds us that true excellence doesn’t come from a rigid or uniform approach, it comes from recognising that every child is unique. At St Christopher’s, we embrace that individuality. We have high academic standards, of course, but we deliver them in a way that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence. I want our children to feel that learning is exciting and empowering, not simply something to “get through.” For me, that’s what makes excellence different here: it’s deeply personal, and it’s built around unlocking the best in every child.

Just last week, I watched a Year 4 child who struggles with writing stand up in assembly and deliver a beautifully confident speech as part of a drama

“I want our children to feel that learning is exciting and empowering, not simply something to “get through”

project. That moment of pride, of excelling in a way that mattered to them, was just as important as any test result. Our role is to give children those opportunities to shine, wherever their talents lie.

Being in the heart of Beckenham, the school is closely woven into the local community. How do you see St Christopher’s contributing to, and benefiting from, its location?

We are very fortunate to be so central in Beckenham. It gives us a wonderful connection to our community. I see St Christopher’s as both contributing to the life of Beckenham and drawing so much from it. We host events, open our doors to families, and build partnerships with local organisations, nurseries, and cultural groups. In turn, our pupils grow up with a strong sense of belonging; they understand they are part of something bigger than themselves. That’s a life lesson as important as anything taught in a classroom. We actively seek opportunities for our pupils to engage with and contribute to the community

through initiatives such as our St Christopher’s in the Community project. This goes beyond fundraising or collecting donations, it’s about giving time, effort, and energy to causes that matter locally. Children help at local care homes, participate in environmental projects, and run workshops or events for younger pupils and families. These experiences teach them responsibility, empathy, and the value of making a tangible difference.

Every school has its own character and personality. What would you say makes St Christopher’s unique, and how would you like that to evolve under your leadership?

St Christopher’s has a very special personality. It combines the warmth and intimacy of a traditional prep school with the dynamism of being part of a forward-thinking educational group. Parents often tell me how nurturing and family-like our environment feels, and I never want us to lose that. At the same time, we are ambitious for our children. Initiatives like our Horizon Project, where pupils explore character, leadership, sustainability, and life skills, show how we prepare them for the world beyond academics. Under my leadership, I want to strengthen this balance: maintaining the close-knit, caring community that makes us unique, while continuing to innovate and open doors to new opportunities for our pupils.

Parents today look for more than just strong academics – they want schools that nurture individuality and character. How does St Christopher’s balance academic rigour with developing well-rounded, confident children?

Parents are absolutely right, education today must be broader than exam results. At St Christopher’s, we are proud of our academic rigour, but we don’t see it as the whole story. We place equal importance on nurturing individuality and developing character.

Through our rich curriculum, music, drama, sport, art, and pastoral care, we give children many different avenues to find their voice and their strengths.

At St Christopher’s, we hold our character values at the heart of everything we do: kindness, respect, resilience, curiosity, and responsibility. These aren’t just words on a poster, they permeate our curriculum, our assemblies, our co-curricular opportunities, and even the way children interact with one another in the playground.

I think about our Year 5 and 6 concert earlier this year. Yes, the pupils showed great skill, but more than that, they demonstrated confidence, teamwork, and creativity. Parents told me afterwards how proud they were not just of their child’s performance, but of how the whole group supported one another.  That’s the balance we strive for: rigour in the classroom, but also plenty of opportunities for children to explore, express, and grow as people. It’s about creating confident, compassionate, and adaptable young people, children who are not only academically prepared but also ready to thrive in life beyond school.

CARNIVORE Rare Quality, Well-Done Service

In the butchery world, Carnivore stands out as a beacon of quality and tradition. Founded by Richard, a passionate butcher who views his trade as a craft, Carnivore has built its reputation on respect for the animal, the farmer, and customer. This respect forms the foundation of a butcher’s shop that prides itself on skill, tradition, and exceptional service.

From the very beginning, Carnivore aimed to raise the standards of butchery. By partnering with small local farms that specialise in native breeds and uphold the highest levels of animal welfare, Carnivore ensures that the meat they offer is of unparalleled flavour and consistency. This commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed, earning Carnivore over a hundred awards, including the prestigious title of Nation’s Best Traditional Sausage in 2024.

Carnivore is more than just a business; it’s a family endeavour. Richard’s nephew, Ryan, runs the Sidcup branch, infusing the shop with fresh ideas and energy. Ryan’s innovative approach has introduced creative marinades, continental-style products, and bold twists on classic cuts. While Ryan drives innovation, Richard remains dedicated to the craft, ensuring that every cut is prepared with the care and precision that define a true butcher.

Richard’s dedication extends beyond the shop. He has served the wider industry through his roles on the executive council for both the London Retailer Meat Traders Association and The National Craft Butchers. His tenure as London president for five years and newly appointed two-year role as national president of The National Craft Butchers

have deepened his belief that butchery is not just a profession but an art worth protecting.

The heart of Carnivore’s success is its motto: “Rare quality, well-done service.” This philosophy is reflected in every interaction with customers, whether it’s recommending the perfect cut for a family meal or delivering to vulnerable members of the community. Service is at the core of what Carnivore does.

Carnivore is more than a butcher’s shop. It’s the culmination of years of learning, family values, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. For those who believe that food should be both honest and exceptional, Carnivore delivers exactly that.

OIN THE COUNTRY

Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.

wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.

Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘

‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!

And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all

about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.

Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!

The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

Moving to a Care Home When is it the Right Choice?

Over the next six months KYN Bickley’s Home Manager

Daisy Slavkova will guide you through some of the significant topics that require careful consideration in later life. We begin the series by identifying when someone should move to a care home, and in next month’s issue Daisy will address how to recognise the early signs of cognitive decline.

When Should Someone Go into a Care Home?

The decision to move into a care home depends on various factors, including social, mental and physical health. Most people consider residential care when independent living becomes challenging and less enjoyable. A care needs assessment from your local council can help determine the appropriate type of care. Signs that a care home may be the right choice include difficulties with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, using the toilet, preparing food, and household chores. Medical needs, safety concerns, and mental wellbeing are also important considerations. Care homes can also help alleviate loneliness by providing social opportunities.

Medical Needs

Managing health needs independently can be difficult, especially for those with sensory impairments, arthritis, metabolic disorders, or

Mental Health

cognitive issues. Residential care can provide the necessary support and clinical expertise and relieve the strain on family members.

Safety Concerns

Living alone can raise safety and security concerns. If you worry about accidents or medical emergencies, or if you are not eating well, residential care may be a safer option. Care homes offer round-the-clock support to handle emergencies and ensure your needs are met.

Mental health is crucial, and feelings of loneliness, anxiety, or depression can impact quality of life. Moving into a care home can provide social interaction and things to do, helping to maintain independence and improve overall wellbeing.

Cost and Alternatives

The cost of care homes varies, and financial help is available for those who cannot self-fund. Alternatives to residential care include domiciliary care or hiring a live-in carer. It’s important to discuss options with family and health professionals, visit local care homes, and do thorough research to make an informed decision.

For more information, please contact kyn.co.uk.

“There are no strict rules for when someone should move into a residential care home, but it may be beneficial if you or a loved one needs support with daily living or personal care”
Daisy Slavkova - Home Manager

For our mothers, for our fathers, for our KYN.

KYN has created a new category of care, where homes are designed with our own family in mind. Each day invites independence, friendship and comfort, supporting residents to live their best lives no matter their age.

HOUSE & GARDEN RENOVATION GUIDE

Bespoke design to suit your space

The dressing room has become one of the most coveted features of the modern home, valued not only for its association with luxury, but for the practicality it brings to daily life. Far more than a place for storage, a beautifully designed dressing room sets the tone of the day and offers a sense of calm and retreat at the end of the day.

At Neatsmith, every project begins with the client. The design process is a collaboration, considering how the room will be used, who will be using it, and which pieces deserve to be carefully stored or showcased. For some, that means bespoke shelving to house an extensive shoe or handbag collection. For others, it might be glass-fronted doors that transform clothing into a gallery-style display, or a central island with tailored compartments for jewellery and watches.

Increasingly, these spaces are evolving to become rooms in their own right. Homeowners are seeking dressing rooms that feel more like a private lounge or boutique, places to enjoy rather than simply to

use. Where space allows, seating is included, while features such as coffee stations or even mini bars elevate the experience, turning the dressing room into an extension of the home’s living spaces. Material choices are key to setting the tone.

Neatsmith’s Reflex glass doors, available in natural silver or smoked grey, are among the most popular options. The doors have a secret as when lit from the inside the glass becomes transparent to reveal the contents of the wardrobe. Richer tones and textures are also on the rise, from the warmth of walnut to deep green finishes and textured surfaces such as the new Cordona collection, which adds both depth and warmth.

Lighting is treated with equal importance.

Neatsmith integrates LED lighting throughout its designs, ensuring that the rooms are as practical as they are atmospheric. Proper lighting enhances usability but also sets the mood, elevating the dressing room into a space that feels considered and complete.

This autumn, Neatsmith opened a new showroom in Royal Tunbridge Wells, ideally situated on the high street, offering clients the opportunity to experience and view dressing room concepts. Here, visitors can explore finishes, layouts, and door styles, and meet with expert designers to create a bespoke dressing room entirely tailored to their home.

Discover Neatsmith’s new Tunbridge Wells showroom at 33 High Street.

Why bespoke is best

Whether you’re refurbishing one room, or carrying out a whole house renovation, bespoke furniture will always be the perfect fit.

Your home is a true reflection of who you are – your character, lifestyle and unique style – your cabinetry and furniture should be no different.

Too often, homes are built without storage in mind. By entrusting a professional, you can make the very best use of your space – that’s where bespoke pieces really come into their own.

Every decision made easier

When you commission handmade furniture, you’ll be working with craftspeople who will take the time to get to know you and your home.

Rather than spending hours trawling websites to find the perfect wardrobe to fit your space, or media unit to frame your TV, custom-made furniture takes your dreams and makes them a reality.

A place for everything

With handmade cabinetry you don’t have to fit your possessions into the furniture, quite the opposite in fact! The design process starts with how you want to use each piece of furniture, understanding its intended function and place in your home. Then each piece is lovingly created to meet your needs and exceed your expectations.

The ultimate space invaders

“Perhaps the most obvious reason to commission bespoke furniture is how perfectly it will fit your space.”

Perhaps the most obvious reason to commission bespoke furniture is how perfectly it will fit your space. You can install floor to ceiling storage to make the most of every inch. Create custom cabinets to turn awkward spaces into fabulous features. Ensure that your prized possessions are kept in perfect condition.

Bespoke storage can do it all.

Beautiful inside and out

Nothing quite beats handmade furniture.

It doesn’t just look fabulous from the outside, when you open each door or pull out each drawer, the quality and craftmanship shine through.

And when you run your hand over it, you can feel the difference – there’s a depth and richness which massproduced furniture just can’t achieve.

Charlie Croker can make anything…

Charlie Croker is Will Hamlyn. Originally a graphic and product designer Will has always had a passion for making. He’s now a full time designer, craftsman & restorer working from his studio in Cranbrook to bring his client’s ideas and dreams to life in wood, metal, leather and paint. Will is also a skilled traditional signwriter and glass gilder, and is slowly self building the family home.

He loves taking his clients on the design journey, helping them develop their vision and ideas and making them a reality.

If you have an idea for your home, your garden or business or if you just know you need something but you aren’t sure what, then Will is your man. He can also restore and bring your much-loved items back to life.

“Being a maker is about creativity, craftsmanship and my desire to bring my clients ideas to life through hands-on work. It’s a mindset rooted in curiosity, problem-solving and for the value of things made with care and from quality materials.

Before mass production, everything was made by someone’s hand. Increasingly we are restricted to fixed choices made from cheap throwaway materials and nothing is unique anymore. Each item I make carries a story — of the client, the tools used, the skills applied, and the time invested.

“If you have an idea for your home, your garden or business or if you just know you need something but you aren’t sure what, then Will is your man”

That ethos extends to my signwriting. I’ve always loved typography through my graphic design work and for me it’s about preserving the history and continuity of the tradition of hand lettering. I’ve recently updated some honours boards for Saint Ronan’s School that date back to the mid 1800’s, how cool to be stepping into those shoes and using the same techniques.

With brushes, enamel & gold leaf, I create work that carries personality and authenticity no machine can replicate. Each stroke demands skill, patience, and a deep understanding of the letterforms. It brings character to public spaces, telling visual stories that last. I do use vinyl text when appropriate but in a throwaway digital world, the hand-painted sign remains a powerful symbol of individuality, lasting quality, and the human hand behind every letter.”

You can’t surprise Will with your request but you can try! Will has made everything from house signs & weathervanes to human sized robots & even a full size iceberg with emperor penguins for a conceptual artist. Unique solutions for unique problems.

6 icons of the WFH era

Five years ago, the working week changed forever. Suddenly, our desks were mere steps from our living rooms, and the office just a short stroll from the kitchen. The world of WFH was born, and with it came new demands: spaces that accommodate both professional needs and the comforts of home. Before this shift, office furniture often felt clinical and sanitised. Today, it has evolved into an expressive element of any design enthusiast’s space. That’s why we’ve curated a list of WFH heroes, pieces that make answering emails and enjoying your environment equally stylish and aesthetic.

Eames Soft Pad Chair by Vitra: Eames, a name that surfaces time and again when discussing the upper echelons of interior design. In these lists alone, we’ve celebrated their work for its style, its timelessness, and now, its functionality. The Soft Pad Office Chair collection is the pinnacle of working interiors, appearing everywhere from TV screens (just pick any episode of Suits) to today’s home offices. Charles Eames once said, “Recognizing the need is the primary condition of design.” A philosophy embodied perfectly in this Vitra classic.

62 Desk by Gubi:

A piece of mid-century majesty, Greta Grossman is a name long cherished in Scandinavian furniture design. Her 62 Desk, now produced by Gubi, follows the fundamental principles of peak Danish design to the letter: a strong wooden presence, clean lines balanced with rounded forms, and above all, a minimalism that allows it to blend

Tab Table Lamp by Flos: The right lighting is, for our money, the most underrated element of an optimal working space. Numerous studies highlight its ability to boost productivity, improve both mental and physical health, and of course elevate aesthetics. With so many benefits hinging on getting the glow just right, we recommend the Tab task light by Barber & Osgerby. A firm favourite of desk dwellers since its debut nearly 15 years ago, it’s one of those rare lamps that delivers a focused beam of light without ever overwhelming the space around it.

Series 7 Swivel Chair by Fritz Hansen:
Tab Table Lamp by Flos

seamlessly with a variety of styles. For a piece that needs to harmonize with the rest of your home’s aesthetic, it’s Gubi’s an ideal option.

Series 7 Swivel Chair by Fritz Hansen:

To quote an old adage: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Sometimes, it really is as simple as taking one of the most beloved seating solutions in Scandinavian design history and giving it a fresh set of wheels. Arne Jacobsen’s midcentury masterpiece is now under the celebrated stewardship of Fritz Hansen, and it continues to go from strength to strength. The Series 7 swivel chair edition is perfectly poised to be a careful collaboration of comfort and practicality.

“Sometimes, it really is as simple as taking one of the most beloved seating solutions in Scandinavian design history and giving it a fresh set of wheels”

The Haller System by USM:

Over 125 years of metal-working history are behind the design story at USM. So to say they’ve seen the world and its ways evolve is a bit of an understatement. If anyone can conceive of a new working reality and accommodate for it, then the Swiss storage giants can. Their flagship Haller collection is the optimal home office space saving solution, partially for its stylish and sleek nature, but most definitely for the level of customisation it offers to suit your every need.

Cavour Desk by Zanotta:

What’s the one thing you want to be when stepping into your working world? (Other than first in line at the coffee machine.) Dynamic. Shaping your office interiors to match that mentality is a key part of staying productive – you want your space to be as sharp and on-the-ball as you are. The Cavour Desk by Zanotta captures that energy with debonair lines and stylish angles, creating a “no Zoom call too long, no Slack message too confusing” kind of atmosphere. chaplins.co.uk

The glazing’s amazing. The service sparkles too.

Updating windows and doors improves your home, but choosing the right company is what really makes an impact.

The older we get, the more we like to have things just as we’d want. The ultimate expression of that on the domestic front is to do as the Simmonds did, and live in a house that was designed for you. But that was 25 years ago.

‘When the house was built, we did it on a bit of a budget and used lots of reclaimed materials for the floors and fireplaces to create a bit of an Edwardian look that we like. The windows were wooden framed and the doors were wooden too. It all needed a lot of maintenance over the years and to be honest we were getting a bit tired of that.’

Looking for a low maintenance alternative, the Simmonds also wanted their replacement windows and doors to offer better insulation — the old ones had ceased to be draughtproof — and improve the property’s security. ‘It couldn’t have been much worse. The back door might as well have been made of balsa wood and the basic locks were well below the standard our insurers needed to see.’

Product quality is incredible today and it really helps to be able to see it for yourself

Fineline is unusual among suppliers of windows and doors because it has fully fitted out showrooms where you can see and choose from fully installed products rather than samples. ‘The Ipswich showroom people were very professional. They made it easy to choose windows and doors then pick contrasting interior and exterior colours and retro fittings that styled well with the rest of our home.’

At the showroom they help you see the possibilities, but it’s the installation teams that really seal the transformation of your home. ‘The Fineline team was nothing short of incredible. They took less than four days to do the whole job, working efficiently and professionally through awful weather. The finish was really high quality, neat, and accurate, and the whole result gave us a real sense of pride in our home – just like we felt when we first moved in.’

A Coastal Retreat

When our client first contacted XL Pools, his goal was clear: to have a beautiful, practical pool ready to enjoy by summer 2025. After months of exploring other companies without finding the right fit, he wanted a team he could trust to deliver — and deliver quickly. Within four weeks of our first meeting, our installation team was on site. Just one month later, the pool was complete and ready for summer swims.

The client’s garden sloped steeply toward the English Channel, a challenge for construction but also an opportunity for design. We created a retaining wall that provided stability while framing the dramatic sea views. Double-drop coping stones enhanced the illusion of an infinity edge, perfectly blending the pool into its coastal surroundings.

To ensure easy ownership, the pool was fitted with an automatic dosing system to manage pH and chlorine, and an energy-efficient air source heat pump to keep the water crystal clear and perfectly warm. The pool shell itself is a Royale Aqua Technics model, constructed with nanographene technology for outstanding strength and durability — ideal for exposed coastal conditions. From the start, we worked collaboratively with the client, keeping him informed and addressing requests quickly. The process was stress-free, and the result was delivered on time and above expectations.

The Client’s Words “Having initially contacted XL Pools to investigate the possibility of having a pool by the start of Summer 2025, things moved forward at a rapid pace. We were very impressed by the initial service and attention to detail, and within four weeks the team arrived to start work. A month later we were enjoying our finished pool. XL Pools offer a very slick service from start to finish with informative and relaxed consultation, courteous installation, and impressive aftercare. We could not fault them and would highly recommend them.”

CHOICE, QUALITY & DESIGN

Want to enhance your bathroom space but finding the compact area hard to work with? Fear not, as there are plenty of ways to utilise smaller bathrooms, including everything you need to make the room appear larger.

Taking advantage of things like natural light, corners and clever storage is important and will help your compact bathroom to feel less restricted. There are ways to make the small space feel bigger without having to spend a fortune on knocking down your wall to fit a new window.

One of these is to create an illusion of space, install mirrors onto your bathroom wall, as this will reflect light well creating the effect of an open window. In addition to this if you are looking to open up the space in your bathroom, go for a mirror that is back lit, at the same time helping to create a minimalistic vibe in your bathroom.

One of the reasons why small bathrooms can feel even smaller is the lack of storage. If you own a wide array of bathroom essentials (such as skincare products, hair products and oral products), consider investing in a shelf to hold all your soaps and bottles. While it might be the obvious choice to go with shower curtains, sometimes traditional isn’t always better. To make your bathroom space feel more open, consider forgoing the curtains and choose a clear glass screen to separate your shower area from the rest.

Instead of separating tile patterns for your bathroom floor and your shower, use a consistent tile type to tile your floor, as having unbroken patterns creates a greater perception of depth, making your bathroom feel more spacious.

Your bathroom is a precious and private space, and chances are, you are going to spend a significant amount of time in it, so why not invest in building it up to look exactly the way you want it? You don’t need a mansion to make a masterpiece, and we hope that our tips have guided you in working with whatever limited space you have, to create the stylish space you always wanted.

If you are looking for more inspiration to create that tranquil bathroom space, you’ll find plenty of superb design ideas for small bathrooms (and even large ones) at our Eltham and Biggin Hill showrooms.

The Smarter Way to Work From Home Garden Studios

Aquiet revolution is happening at the end of the garden—offering flexibility, tax advantages, and a boost to wellbeing.

With remote working now the norm, OBC London understands the chaos of kitchen-table offices. For freelancers, entrepreneurs, and the self-employed, rising office rents—averaging £180–£258 per desk each month—can feel unsustainable. That’s why more people are turning to garden studios: spaces to create, focus, and grow.

Let’s talk practicalities. Garden rooms generally fall under permitted development rights, so for a 5x6 metre space with a height of 2.5 metres, no planning permission is needed. Construction takes just 8–10 weeks, with minimal disruption and no deep foundations—your garden stays intact.

Bespoke designs start at £30,000, depending on size, location, and interior finish.

We can design studios that fully comply with current building regulations for thermal insulation, offering all the benefits of a permanent structure while costing £30–£50 per month to run. We can also incorporate kitchens and wet rooms using specialist drainage systems to create a truly self-contained space.

And the benefits go far beyond convenience. If you’re self-employed or running a business from home, you can claim allowable expenses for utilities, internet, maintenance, and furnishings. More importantly, garden studios support a healthier lifestyle—studies show the psychological benefits of separating work from home.

Your space can also grow with you and your family: into a garden gym, a teenager’s den, or a creative workshop. You might even complete your setup with a beautifully designed Grillo outdoor kitchen—perfect for alfresco dining and relaxed summer evenings.

At OBC London, we tailor every design to suit your lifestyle. As a family-run company, our passion for design goes beyond our builds—we even sponsor The London Architect, a podcast for young people on Spotify that celebrates award-winning architecture and design. Since 1979, we’ve built a trusted reputation across South London and Kent for creating personal, practical, and beautifully crafted spaces. Garden studios are about working smarter, not harder. Whether you’re launching a new project, focusing on fitness, or entertaining the whole family— start at the end of the garden.
