UKRAINIAN NATIONAL OPERA® PRESENTS CARMEN

We are delighted to bring back Dnipro Opera theatre from the Ukraine for our next Opera Season. armen tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who falls head over heels in love with Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale. The infatuated Don José abandons his childhood sweetheart and neglects his military duties, only to lose the fickle Carmen to the glamorous toreador Escamillo. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for the brilliance of its melodies, enthralling atmosphere, and orchestration, as well as for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters. The rich and colourful vigour of the gypsies’ scenes will have you on the edge of your seat, the vibrancy, enthusiasm, and intensity of the performances will reverberate long after the final curtain has fallen.

Daffodils Trumpet a Golden Spring at Hever Castle & Gardens

As a garden writer, I’m fortunate to see many beautiful floral displays, but Hever in March is truly specialit quite literally announces that spring has arrived.

To wander the grounds once viewed from the castle windows by Anne Boleyn is always a pleasure. In March, however, during Dazzling Daffodils there’s an added delight: visitors are granted access to Anne Boleyn’s Orchard, where thousands of unusual and historic daffodils burst into bloom. This rare opportunity can be enjoyed with Head Gardener Neil Miller and bulb expert Johnny Walkers on twice daily tours during daffodil week.

together to expand Hever’s daffodil collection, carefully planning the planting to ensure a continuous display from early March through to late April.

The result is breathtaking: 250,000 daffodil blooms in shades of gold, ivory, primrose and soft pink shimmer in the spring sunshine.

The foundations of this golden spectacle were laid more than a century ago by William Waldorf Astor, who purchased Hever 120 years ago and created the Italian Garden. Astor adored the classic ‘King Alfred’ daffodil and planted them in their thousands across the estate. Remarkably, many of those original bulbs still bloom today, returning each year with undiminished vigour.

This year brings added excitement: on 16 March, the opening day of ‘Dazzling Daffodils’, a brand-new variety - Narcissus ‘Hever Castle’ - will be officially launched. Bred by Taylors Bulbs, its bold golden trumpet pays tribute to Astor’s beloved ‘King Alfred’.

The celebrations conclude on Sunday 22 March with the Plant Fairs Roadshow, featuring RHS Gold Medal-winning specialist nurseries and an array of exceptional spring plants, including unusual narcissus.

With expert-led tours, historic blooms and a sea of golden flowers, March at Hever is spring at its most radiant.

www.hevercastle.co.uk

Johnny, of Taylors Bulbs, has achieved an extraordinary 25 consecutive RHS Gold Medals at the Chelsea Flower Show - a feat so impressive that the late Queen would often stop to admire his stand in the Grand Pavilion. Over the past eight years, Johnny and Neil have worked

Gorgeous Gardens, Great Exhibitions and Easter Adventures with the National Trust

Springtime refresh at Chartwell, Emmetts Garden and Quebec House.

Spring heralds a procession of beautiful blooms at the National Trust’s Chartwell and Emmetts Garden. Feast your eyes on the cherry blossoms, daffodils and tulips. Admire magnificent magnolias, rhododendrons and woodland wildflowers.

Explore the great outdoors with helpful information from the National Trust Visitor Centres and web pages. For a guided walk on the Chartwell estate, pre-book tickets for one of three special events led by the Area Ranger. See what’s new at the Old Stables Tea Room at Emmetts Garden. Recent renovations have created additional rooms with more seating and extra space in the entrance area to enjoy delicious National Trust treats. It’s the perfect pairing for a springtime stroll.

Get into art at Chartwell

The end of winter signals the reopening of the National Trust’s historic houses. At Chartwell, the springtime theme is ‘Churchill the Artist’. Look out for new displays and never-beforeseen items including Churchill’s painting ‘Quiet Waters’ which gets its first UK public showing thanks to the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation.

See also a rare print gifted to Churchill by Lord Waldorf Astor. It was taken from a painting by Sir Alfred Munnings, who was famed for his equestrian art and later as President of the Royal Academy. Munnings championed Churchill’s own painting, encouraging him to exhibit at the Royal Academy and helping him secure recognition as an Honorary Academician Extraordinary—the only amateur artist to receive this honour.

Churchill, who used painting as antidote to the stress of public and political life, inspired his nephew, John Spencer Churchill to become an artist. His ‘Landscape with Chartwell’ is another newly displayed piece. See more of his handiwork in the reopened Marlborough Pavilion with its scenes of their famous ancestor and the Battle of Blenheim.

Chartwell continues to spark creativity even now. Throughout the year, visitors can see the eight winning paintings from last summer’s ‘Inspired by Chartwell’ competition. Works from amateur artists of all ages—from primary school and sixth form students to printmakers, designers and retirees feature in Churchill’s Studio alongside his own paintings.

New at Quebec House

Quebec House, the 18th-century childhood home of General James Wolfe, reopens on 28 March. Its adjacent Coach House has had a makeover, creating more flexible exhibition space, an area for tasting events and a refreshed second-hand bookshop.

Explore the new exhibition telling the story of the 18th-century children left in the care of the Westerham branch of the Foundling Hospital.

Created in collaboration with Coram, the UK’s first and longest-serving children’s charity, discover the role of maternal love tokens, and see those created by school children of today.

A newly displayed sculpture inside Quebec House links to the exhibition. Local artist Sally Eldars crafted ‘I Will Return’ in response to the emotive history of the Westerham foundlings. The handwoven Moses basket crafted from recycled bedsheets and filled with handmade, marked clay tokens is a powerful connection with the past.

Easter Adventures

For families, spring means the return of National Trust Easter Adventures with eggcellent activities at Chartwell and an Edwardian festival at Emmetts Garden (21 March–19 April). Prices are £3.50 per trail which includes an Easter trail sheet, bunny ears and dairy or vegan/Free From chocolate egg suitable for people with milk, egg, gluten, peanut and tree nut allergies. Normal admission or National Trust membership also applies.

For the first time ever, Emmetts Garden will be offering fairground rides (3–12 April). Kids will

love the carousel, swing boats and chair planes. Purchase a wristband for £10 to enjoy rides throughout the day. Don’t miss the Punch and Judy and mini-magic shows at Emmetts Garden on 14 and 16 April. Catch one of the three daily performances in the meadow (included with admission).

Once you’ve had your fill of chocolate eggs and activity trails, visit Quebec House for a taste of history (4–6 April, 23–25 May). Tempting scents fill the air as volunteer cooks prepare Georgian era treats in the kitchen. Hop over to the Coach House for a sample (free with admission, donations welcome).

Where English Wine Meets Pub Life

Introducing the Winemaker’s Pub, a modern interpretation of the classic Kentish local, brought to life by Balfour Winery. It is, at heart, a pub, but one with vineyard credentials and a quiet confidence about what’s in your glass.

Fully integrated with the estate, the bar pours the complete range of Balfour wines, from bright, orchard-fresh whites to elegant, structured reds and the estate’s much-admired English sparkling. This isn’t a token gesture to the family name; it’s the full repertoire, served just a shuttle ride from the vines themselves. Not that it’s only about wine. A carefully kept line-up of beers keeps pint drinkers content, while a thoughtful back bar of spirits caters to those who favour a Negroni, a proper pint, or a bracingly cold G&T. Sometimes, after all, all you need is a very good drink and a packet of crisps.

The food is resolutely ‘pubby’ in the best sense: generous, seasonal, and rooted in British comfort. There’s a classic pub menu built for long lunches and unhurried suppers . Think crisp fish and chips, burgers worth leaning into, and plates that invite a second glass. Pizzas emerge blistered and generous from the oven, ideal for sharing (or not). Puddings are properly nostalgic and unashamedly

“Fully integrated with the estate, the bar pours the complete range of Balfour wines, from bright, orchard-fresh whites to elegant, structured reds and the estate’s much-admired English sparkling”

comforting. A dedicated children’s menu ensures smaller guests are just as well looked after, and every Sunday there’s a traditional roast with all the trimmings. The sort that turns an afternoon into an occasion.

Upstairs, four boutique bedrooms offer a place to fall into crisp sheets after an evening that ran agreeably away with itself. Each room is quietly stylish, more countryside retreat than over-designed showpiece — somewhere you’ll wake to soft light and the faint sense you’ve made an excellent decision.

Events keep the calendar lively, from relaxed tastings to a monthly themed quiz held on the first Thursday of every month. Occasionally fiercely competitive, always goodhumoured, the prize is a Tour and Tasting voucher at the estate.

Because this isn’t just a pub; it’s part of a wider wine story. Tours, tastings and even lunch at the winery can be woven into your stay, with a shuttle to and from the vineyard (a civilised solution to the thorny issue of who’s driving).

Come for a pint, stay for supper, leave with a case.

Luma Brings Mediterranean Glow to Petts Wood

There’s a new glow on the Petts Wood dining map, and it comes from Luma, a Mediterraneaninspired restaurant already drawing in curious locals. Since opening, it has added a welcome splash of sunsoaked flavour to the neighbourhood, offering a dining experience that feels both transportive and immediately at home.

Step through the door and the tone is set instantly. The interiors evoke the relaxed elegance of the Mediterranean coast: warm earthtoned hues, natural textures and soft, golden lighting that carries the ambience of sunset well into the evening. Stylish yet unpretentious, it’s the sort of space equally suited to a lingering lunch, an intimate dinner or a lively night sharing plates with friends. The menu is where Luma truly shines. Drawing inspiration from across the Mediterranean, from southern Italy to Greece and the Levant, the kitchen celebrates vibrant ingredients and bold, balanced flavours. Expect dishes built around ripe tomatoes, fragrant herbs, citrus, olive oil and chargrilled vegetables. Small plates encourage sharing, whether it’s creamy hummus with a generous pour of extravirgin olive oil, smoky aubergine brightened with pomegranate or warm, freshly baked flatbreads.

Luma’s Josper charcoal oven sits at the heart of the kitchen and is a defining feature of the restaurant. Combining the intensity of a grill with the precision of an oven, it cooks over powerful charcoal heat, locking in juices while creating that unmistakable smoky char. It’s responsible for the restaurant’s beautifully seared meats, flamekissed seafood and perfectly grilled vegetables, lending each dish a bold, authentic Mediterranean character.

“At the heart of the kitchen is Luma’s Josper charcoal oven, a signature feature that brings a distinctive depth of flavour to many of the restaurant’s dishes”

Seafood is a standout, as you’d expect from Mediterranean cooking. Grilled sea bass, prawns brightened with lemon and slowcooked octopus celebrate freshness and simplicity. Alongside these are comforting favourites such as lamb infused with rosemary, rich tomatobased stews and colourful salads scattered with feta and olives. Vegetarian dishes are equally well considered, offering flavourforward options that feel intentional rather than secondary.

The drinks list complements the food with crisp whites, rosés and light reds that pair effortlessly with summery flavours. Classic cocktails come with a Mediterranean twist, often incorporating citrus, herbs or subtle spice.

More than simply a new restaurant, Luma brings a spirit of relaxed conviviality to Petts Wood, a place for shared plates, easy conversation and evenings that stretch unhurriedly ahead.

A NEW SEASON AT Fish Union Bar & Grill

Spring has a way of bringing fresh energy to the dining scene, and few places seem better placed to celebrate the shift in seasons than Fish Union Bar & Grill in Chislehurst. With a kitchen that has always championed quality ingredients and confident cooking, the arrival of spring promises a new wave of flavour—and a couple of special events worth noting in the weeks ahead.

First up is Spring Forward, a chef’s dinner taking place on 26th March. As the name suggests, the evening will focus squarely on the ingredients that define the season. Expect dishes built around the freshest produce available, alongside conversations about foraging, cooking techniques, and the many ways these ingredients can shine. It’s the kind of relaxed yet insightful evening that gives diners a glimpse behind the scenes of how chefs think about food.

March also marks another milestone for the restaurant. On the 20th, Fish Union celebrates one year since its relaunch following a full refurbishment that transformed the space into the stylish restaurant and bar locals know today. Over the past year, the response has been remarkable. Regulars from Chislehurst and the surrounding area have embraced it as a favourite neighbourhood spot, while word of mouth has brought diners from across London and Kent to see what the buzz is about.

Looking ahead, there’s more to come. On 30th April, Fish Union will host a special Portuguese wine dinner led by Rui, Portuguese wine specialist from Liberty Wines, alongside chef Richard Kirkwood. Guests can expect a carefully curated selection of wines paired with a bespoke menu from the kitchen—an evening designed to be as informative as it is enjoyable, and a rare chance to explore Portuguese wines with an expert guide. With longer evenings returning and the kitchen leaning into the best of the season, Fish Union Bar & Grill is entering spring in confident form. For those yet to discover it—and for those already familiar— it’s the perfect moment to take another look.

MOTHERING SUNDAY

A Tradition Worth Bringing Home

Mothering Sunday, the UK’s original Mother’s Day, has long been associated with the idea of coming home. Dating back to the 16th century, it was traditionally observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when families returned to their “mother church”. For young people working away in service, it was often the only opportunity in the year to visit their families.

Over time the religious tradition evolved into a celebration of mothers themselves, marked by spring flowers, handwritten notes and the sharing of Simnel cake. Yet the true spirit of Mothering Sunday has always remained the same: family gathering around the table.

For many households across Bromley and Chislehurst, that table is made all the more special with ingredients from Carnivore Butchers.

A proud fixture of the local high street, Carnivore has earned a loyal following for its commitment to exceptional quality, traditional craftsmanship and friendly, knowledgeable service.

The counters showcase carefully sourced meat from trusted farms, with a focus on native breeds and high welfare standards.

Whether it’s a beautifully matured joint of dry aged beef, a tender leg of spring lamb or a perfectly prepared free range chicken, Carnivore offers the kind of produce that turns a Sunday roast into something truly memorable. Their experienced team are always ready with practical advice on cuts, preparation and cooking, helping customers create a meal that feels both impressive and effortless. There is something wonderfully fitting about celebrating Mothering Sunday with a classic British roast. The aroma of crisping potatoes, the sizzle of a well seasoned joint and the simple pleasure of carving at the table capture everything the day represents: warmth, appreciation and time spent together.

In an age of hurried restaurant bookings and last minute gifts, bringing the celebration home feels thoughtful and timeless. A carefully chosen joint, a well laid table and a shared meal with family is often the most meaningful way to say thank you. This Mothering Sunday, make the occasion truly special with quality ingredients and expert advice from Carnivore Butchers.

Because the best celebrations begin with exceptional food.

Before 5th April: One Gift Your Future 18-Year-Old Will Thank You For

As we approach the end of the tax year, most conversations focus on pensions and ISAs for ourselves. But there’s one allowance many families overlook, and once 5th April passes, you can’t get it back.

The Junior ISA.

Each child can have up to £9,000 invested every tax year. Parents, grandparents and even friends can contribute. When the tax year ends, any unused allowance is lost.

One of the most common concerns I hear is this:

“What happens when they turn 18? Won’t they just spend it all?”

It’s a fair question. Handing over a lump sum to an 18-year-old can feel daunting. But recent research from investment platform AJ Bell suggests those fears may be overstated. The majority of young people don’t empty their Junior ISA when they gain control. Many continue saving into an adult ISA, and full cash withdrawals are relatively uncommon.

Perhaps we underestimate them.

When children grow up knowing they have savings, and understanding why that money exists, they often develop a greater

“The real advantage of starting early is time. Even modest contributions, invested consistently, can grow meaningfully over 18 years thanks to compounding.”

sense of financial awareness. Some may use part of it for travel or education. Others leave it invested. Many take a balanced approach.

That’s not reckless, it’s considered.

The real advantage of starting early is time. Even modest contributions, invested consistently, can grow meaningfully over 18 years thanks to compounding.

You don’t need to use the full £9,000 allowance. Smaller, regular amounts can build into something significant.

With the tax year closing soon, it’s worth asking: Have we used our child’s allowance this year?

If not, this could be a simple, tax-efficient step that benefits them long after their 18th birthday.

Make your money work harder. Call us for a free initial consultation and get some clarity, confidence, and control over your finances. Call 01732 834834 or visit citrusfinancial.co.uk

A Head Start That Grows With Them.

A Junior ISA is one of the simplest and most taxefficient ways to build long-term savings for a child or grandchild. Up to £9,000 can be invested each tax year, giving their money the potential to grow over time.

Starting early can make a meaningful difference. Eighteen years of growth, even from modest, regular contributions, can build into something significant by the time adulthood begins.

It’s not about handing over a windfall. It’s about giving them choices.

If you’d like to turn good intentions into a practical plan, we’re here to guide you through it.

With the tax year ending on 5 April, there’s still time to use this year’s allowance.

The value of investments can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

House Of Hounds

In the heart of Petts Wood’s bustling high street sits a local treasure for dog owners who understand that grooming is about far more than appearances. This independent salon has built a loyal following not simply by trimming coats and clipping nails, but by treating every dog as an individual. In an era of conveyor-belt services and rushed appointments, its careful, compassionate approach feels refreshingly personal.

That dedication becomes especially vital during spring, when shedding season arrives in earnest. As temperatures rise and daylight stretches longer, many dogs begin to cast off their dense winter coats. For double-coated breeds in particular, this process can be dramatic. Without proper grooming, loose undercoat becomes trapped, leading to matting, discomfort, and even skin irritation. Regular brushing and professional de-shedding treatments help remove dead hair safely while protecting the healthy topcoat that shields a dog from sun and sudden cold snaps.

Spring grooming is not just about keeping fur off the sofa. It plays a direct role in canine wellbeing. A thorough brush-out stimulates circulation,

“Regular brushing and professional deshedding treatments help remove dead hair safely while protecting the healthy topcoat that shields a dog from sun and sudden cold snaps”

distributes natural oils, and allows early detection of lumps, ticks, or sore patches hidden beneath thick fur. Ears, paws, and sanitary areas also require extra attention as muddy walks and blooming allergens increase the risk of infection. A professional groomer’s trained eye can spot small issues before they become costly veterinary concerns. Moreover, shedding season is a time of transition. Dogs can feel itchy and unsettled as their coats change. A calm, patient grooming environment reduces stress and ensures the process is comfortable rather than overwhelming. For many local owners, booking a spring appointment is as routine as a seasonal wardrobe change.

Community businesses like this salon quietly uphold standards that benefit both pets and people. By combining skill, empathy, and education, they remind us that grooming is not vanity, it is preventive care. As spring unfolds, responsible dog ownership means embracing the brush, scheduling that tidy-up, and recognising that a wellgroomed dog is, above all, a healthier and happier companion.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

– The finest independent schools in the UK –

Junior King’s and The King’s

School Canterbury

A Connected Journey

At King’s, we are dedicated to making sure every pupil’s time at school is supported, enriching, and shaped around their personal talents and interests. The 11+ provision at Junior King’s (for pupils aged 3–13) is central to this approach, providing a smooth and thoughtfully planned transition into Senior King’s while maintaining the many benefits of a prep school education. Starting at Junior King’s in Year 7 allows children to enjoy two additional years of prep school learning, where curiosity stays at the heart of education, creativity is encouraged, and opportunities for exploration remain wideranging. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 experience a broad and stimulating curriculum enhanced by small class sizes, outstanding facilities, and strong pastoral care. Every pupil is recognised as an individual and supported in ways that enable them to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

Through places offered at 11+ give families confidence when planning ahead. Pupils benefit from regular interaction with the senior school through visits, joint events, and lessons taught by Senior King’s staff. This familiarity nurtures a sense of continuity and belonging, so that when they progress to Year 9, the move feels comfortable and positive. The curriculum is also carefully coordinated across both schools. Our Global Perspectives programme begins in Year 7 and runs through to Year 9, encouraging pupils to think critically, ask questions, and examine global themes - excellent preparation for the demands of GCSEs, A Levels, and life beyond school.

While the 11+ route provides a strong and well-connected pathway through King’s, we are equally proud of our large and lively 13+ intake. Pupils joining at this stage bring new perspectives, form new friendships, and help keep our community vibrant and diverse.

We would be delighted to welcome you to one of our Open Mornings, which take place throughout the year at both Junior King’s and The King’s School Canterbury. Individual tours can also be arranged by appointment.

A Future Full of Possibility

At Breaside, we believe education should do more than prepare children for their next exam – it should prepare them for life. From Kindergarten through to Year 6, our pupils benefit from a rich and ambitious curriculum that builds strong academic foundations alongside confidence, character and independence.

Academic excellence remains at the heart of all we do. With a consistent record of outstanding 11+ outcomes and scholarships to leading Senior Independent schools, we ensure every child is challenged, supported and inspired

to achieve their very best. Small class sizes and dedicated, high performing teachers allow us to truly know each pupil, nurturing both achievement and wellbeing in equal measure.

Alongside our academic strengths, Breaside is increasingly focused on developing future-ready skills. Through enterprise initiatives and real-world learning opportunities, pupils are encouraged to think creatively, problem solve, work collaboratively and present their ideas with confidence. They learn to take initiative, embrace challenge and understand how their learning connects beyond the classroom.

Learning at Breaside extends far beyond textbooks. From specialist teaching in Art, Music, Languages and Sport to outdoor learning and Forest School experiences across our two Bromley sites, children are given space to explore their interests and discover their strengths. We aim high but always with kindness, ensuring pupils feel secure, supported and excited about learning.

Choosing the right school is an important decision, and we believe the best way to understand Breaside is to experience it for yourself.

We warmly invite families to attend an Open Morning or arrange a personal tour at a time that suits them. A member of our Admissions Team will be delighted to guide you around our Widmore Road and Orchard Road sites, answer your questions and share what makes a Breaside education truly exceptional.

Bickley Park School Joins the Sevenoaks Family of Schools

Bickley Park School is delighted to announce that it has joined the Sevenoaks Family of Schools.

The Sevenoaks Family of Schools – Sevenoaks School, Solefield School and now Bickley Park School – offers an exceptional independent education within the southeast, supporting children from age 2½ to 18 with worldclass learning, outstanding pastoral care and a broad, enriching cocurricular programme.

Bickley Park joins the family with a well-established reputation for excellence, healthy pupil numbers and growing waiting lists in many year groups. Known for its warm, family-oriented atmosphere, the school is guided by its ethos, “Be All You Can Be”, which focuses on nurturing individual strengths and encouraging every child to fulfil their potential.

Each school within the Sevenoaks Family will retain its own identity and leadership team. The partnership is rooted in shared values and an aspirational vision, but it preserves the distinctive character and independence of each community. At a time when educational choice is increasingly significant for families, the collaboration offers a broader, more cohesive and resilient approach to independent schooling.

The partnership aims to secure a strong and sustainable future for independent education in the region while broadening opportunities for pupils and staff. Through collaboration and shared expertise, Bickley Park will gain access to wider professional networks and resources, enhancing teaching, learning and development across all three schools.

Tom Quilter, Headmaster of Bickley Park, said: Through joining The Sevenoaks Family of Schools, Bickley Park can build on our longstanding relationship with Sevenoaks School, one of the top independent schools in the country.

“This partnership will enrich the learning experiences of our pupils, create even more pathways to success, and extend our very special community.

“As Bickley Park continues to go from strength to strength following our successful co-educational announcement in 2024, this next phase opens up incredibly exciting opportunities for collaboration and development.”

Jesse Elzinga, Head of Sevenoaks School, said: “As a highly regarded and successful prep school in Bromley, south east London, Bickley is a wonderful addition to our growing community.

“We share a clear vision for what exceptional education looks like, and by working together we can offer the highest standard of teaching and learning while maintaining the flexibility, individuality and enhanced opportunities that benefit every child. COBHAM HALL SCHOOL Where Education Extends Beyond the Classroom

Set in the Kent countryside, just 30 minutes from central London, Cobham Hall is a co-educational day and boarding school where heritage meets innovation. Nestled within a stunning 16th-century manor, the School has a proud history of nurturing confident, compassionate and independent young individuals since its founding in 1962 as an all-girls school. Over the decades, Cobham Hall has earned a reputation for combining academic rigour with a supportive and inspiring environment empowering students to thrive both personally and intellectually.

In 2023, the School took a transformative step by opening its Sixth Form to boys, creating a vibrant co-educational setting where students quickly flourished academically and socially. This progressive change was met with resounding success, enriching the community and enhancing the learning experience for all. Building on this achievement, Cobham Hall embraced a new chapter in 2025, welcoming boys across all year groups and becoming a fully co-educational school. This expansion has not only broadened opportunities for students but also strengthened the sense of belonging and community that defines life at Cobham Hall.

At the heart of the School is a commitment to exceptional pastoral care and a personalised curriculum that caters to the unique talents and ambitions of every student. While academic excellence remains central to the Cobham Hall experience, the School firmly believes that

education extends beyond the classroom. A rich co-curricular programme in sport, the arts and enrichment activities allows students to explore their passions, build resilience and develop leadership skills. This holistic approach reflects the School’s guiding principle: “There is more in you than you think,” inspiring students to discover their full potential in a supportive and stimulating environment.

Cobham Hall also offers the unique experience of learning within a historic setting that embraces innovation, where tradition and modernity coexist seamlessly. The combination of small class sizes, expert teaching and a nurturing ethos ensures that every student feels valued, supported and challenged.

Families are invited to experience the school firsthand at the next Open Morning on Saturday 21st March from 9.30am to 12.30pm, offering an insight into the exceptional opportunities that await students at Cobham Hall.

We grow amazing people SOMERHILL

The ‘best of both worlds’, the ‘ideal mix’, the ‘place I always dreamt of finding’ – these are just some of the comments we often hear from families when they first discover Somerhill. Set within a stunning 400-year-old Jacobean mansion surrounded by 150 acres of parkland, Somerhill is a beautifully unique independent prep school where learning, adventure and childhood flourish in equal measure.

Our grounds are not simply a backdrop, but a vital part of everyday life. Children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover, whether in the classroom, the woodlands, fields, or gardens. It is in these moments that curiosity grows, friendships are formed, and confidence begins to take shape. There is a tangible sense of joy across Somerhill, and the sound of laughter carries through the grounds.

We have a simple belief: happy children want to learn. This is a school where pupils are encouraged to ‘get stuck in’ – to try new things and embrace the endless opportunities on offer, take on challenges, and celebrate their progress along the way. Success in sport can build resilience in the classroom; achievement in music can inspire leadership or creative expression. We aim to nurture confident, kind, and capable young people who persevere and believe in themselves.

“We have a simple belief: happy children want to learn. This is a school where pupils are encouraged to ‘get stuck in’ –to try new things and embrace the endless opportunities”

What truly sets Somerhill apart is our distinctive model: we have one way of living, but two ways of learning. From ages 2 to 7, boys and girls learn together in a co-educational environment that celebrates play, creativity and curiosity. From 7 to 13, pupils are taught in single-sex classes, allowing teaching to be tailored to different learning styles, while still enjoying a fully co-educational experience beyond the classroom. Break times, sports, clubs and activities are shared, creating a strong sense of community where every child feels known and valued.

Somerhill is more than just a school; it is a place where children are encouraged to be themselves, to grow in confidence and to embrace opportunity. We warmly invite families to visit us at our open morning in May, where you can meet our new Headteacher, Rhian Thornton, or you can arrange a personal tour with our admissions team at a time that suits you.

A ROSY FUTURE: Stunning new spaces announced at Dulwich’s leading prep school

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, has unveiled plans for its new Pre-School and Reception classrooms, set to open in September 2026. These purpose-designed environments will offer children an inspiring, contemporary, and nurturing start to their educational journey, supporting the school’s commitment to shaping brilliant futures.

The project represents a significant investment in early childhood education, creating spaces that are immersive, flexible, and designed to ignite curiosity from the very start of school life.

The Pre-School and Reception development represents the beginning of a wider vision for Rosemead Preparatory School. Over the next several years, the school will embark on a phased programme of redevelopment designed to modernise and enhance the entire site. This long-

“Rosemead is entering a hugely exciting chapter, and I look forward to working closely with families, colleagues, and, of course, the children as we shape the next stage of the school’s development together”

term plan will focus on creating contemporary, flexible and future-ready spaces that support exceptional teaching and learning at every stage.

This initial phase signals the school’s commitment to sustained investment in its facilities, ensuring that every child benefits from an environment that inspires confidence, creativity and a love of learning.

The new Pre-School space has been thoughtfully designed around a calming, organic aesthetic using a soft palette of pale lilac and earthy greens. Each aspect of the environment has been crafted to support young children’s wellbeing, focus and imagination. Distinct areas will be defined through bold interactive features and gentle flooring transitions will encourage exploration and independent learning, while soft seating features introduce warmth and personality. The result is a space that feels modern and and deeply

child-centred, giving the youngest pupils the freedom to learn, play and grow in an enriching environment.

The Reception classrooms build on the Pre-School’s ethos with a scheme that pairs a neutral base and soft green palette with uplifting, purple-toned accents. This creates a fresh, nature-inspired atmosphere that supports cognitive development and play-based learning. Purposefully designed activity and work areas will promote collaboration, creativity and early social skills. Flexibility and adaptability are central to the scheme, ensuring the space meets the needs of all learners.

Together, these new environments will provide pupils with the space and structure they need to thrive building confidence, independence and readiness for the next stage of their learning.

Speaking about the plans, Nick Hewlett, CEO of St Dunstan’s Education Group, said: ‘Across the Group, we are committed to creating learning environments that truly inspire young people and prepare them for the world they will inherit. These exceptional new spaces at Rosemead reflect our belief in educational excellence delivered differently where innovation, wellbeing and individuality come together to give every child the very best possible start.’

Alison Walsingham, Head of Operations at Rosemead, added: ‘This project represents a significant and exciting investment in the future of our school. We are working meticulously with our design partners to ensure these new spaces are not only beautiful but highly functional and sustainable. Every detail has been carefully considered to create environments where children and staff feel supported, inspired and able to thrive every day.’

This development comes at an especially exciting moment for Rosemead Preparatory School.

“The Pre-School and Reception development represents the beginning of a wider vision for Rosemead Preparatory School”

Last year, the school was named Independent Prep School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2025, widely regarded as the Oscars of education. The recognition celebrates Rosemead’s exceptional pastoral care, innovative approach to learning, and the strong sense of community that defines the school.

St Dunstan’s Education Group also announced Christopher Woodward as the new Head at Rosemead, effective from September 2026.

Mr Woodward is currently Head of Bassett House School in Notting Hill. During his time at Bassett House, Mr Woodward has led significant developments across all aspects of the educational provision. Prior to headship, Christopher spent a decade working at some of London’s most successful schools, including as Deputy Head of Newton Prep.

Speaking about his appointment, Mr Woodward, said: ‘I am delighted and deeply honoured to be appointed the next Head of Rosemead. From the moment I first visited, the school’s warm, joyful atmosphere and the genuine enthusiasm of its pupils and staff made a lasting impression on me.

‘Rosemead is entering a hugely exciting chapter, and I look forward to working closely with families, colleagues, and, of course, the children as we shape the next stage of the school’s development together. As a Dulwich resident, I am excited to play an active role in the local community. I was especially charmed that Lordship Lane, with all its energy and character, featured so prominently in my conversation with the Years 5 and 6 pupil panel; their pride in their neighbourhood was wonderful to see.’

A thoughtful response to the way childhood is changing

Tom Carter, Head of St Christopher’s The Hall, Beckenham, discusses the school’s new initiative for pupils

Last year, we launched a new initiative that is already making a powerful difference to our pupils, The Horizon Programme. It was created in response to something teachers and parents are noticing everywhere: children are growing up in an increasingly digital world, and many of the practical skills, social habits and deeper patterns of thinking that once developed naturally are becoming less familiar. The Horizon Programme is our way of bringing those essential experiences back into daily school life.

We see bright, capable children who can access information instantly, yet sometimes hesitate when faced with open-ended problems. Many find it challenging to maintain focus in a world full of digital distractions, and collaborative, face-to-face work can require more practice than it once did. Opportunities to build, create, explore and persevere, cornerstones of childhood, are becoming less frequent in a screen-led culture.

Horizon responds to this directly. Each week, pupils in Years 1–6 take part in purposeful, hands-on sessions built around four pillars: Character,

Leadership, Sustainability and Life Skills. These experiences help children rediscover the joy of working together, thinking deeply and developing the real-world confidence that cannot be learned through a screen.

The early impact has been remarkable. Pupils talk about Horizon sessions with genuine excitement. Teachers are observing stronger teamwork, improved perseverance and calmer, more intentional engagement. The programme has brought a renewed sense of curiosity, creativity and focus into the school week.

Already, pupils have explored themes such as sustainability, embracing practical challenges with maturity and ownership, a clear reminder of how much children flourish when given meaningful, real-world tasks. They have also taken part in activities designed to strengthen focus, practising how to slow down, tune out distractions and enjoy the satisfaction of deep, uninterrupted attention. These examples confirm that the skills we hoped to nurture were exactly the ones our pupils needed most.

And these are only the beginning. As the initiative continues, we will move into a range of practical Life Skills, the small but important tasks children once learned naturally but do not always encounter today. Pupils will learn how to change a bed, tie a tie, make a cup of tea safely, use simple tools, read basic instructions, plan a small budget, and even sew on a button. These may seem modest, yet they foster independence, confidence and a quiet sense of capability that stays with children for life. Parents often say, “I wish

“The Horizon

Project

is far more than a

new initiative; it is a thoughtful response to the way childhood is changing. We are proud of its early impact and excited for everything still to come”

someone had taught me these things at school.” Now, we are.

What makes The Horizon Project so powerful is both its warmth and its purpose. It gives children the time and space to try, to get stuck, to recover, to succeed, and to discover that each of these steps is valuable. It nurtures resilience without pressure, responsibility without stress and curiosity without fear. It restores the grounding, practical roots of childhood that can so easily be overshadowed in a fast, high-tech world.

The Horizon Project is far more than a new initiative; it is a thoughtful response to the way childhood is changing. We are proud of its early impact and excited for everything still to come.

Learn more about St Christopher’s The Hall at one of their upcoming events. The school will host an open morning on Wednesday 25 March 2026 and a discovery morning on Saturday 25 April 2026.

Spring: The Season of Renewal Starts Within

Spring is here. And with it, a question worth asking: why do we lavish this season with renewal rituals for everything except the part of ourselves that needs it most?

In Spring the natural world turns. The cherry blossom endures frost. The snowdrop pushes through iron-hard ground. The most extraordinary things are both delicate and fiercely resilient - and the female body, in all its complexity, is no different.

We speak of the intimate area in whispers, if at all. And yet it carries us through decadeschildbirth, perimenopause, the hormonal shifts that medicine has long acknowledged but rarely addressed with the urgency they deserve. It is, in botanical terms, a perennial: built to endure, worthy of tending.

Men have had Viagra for nearly thirty years — a mainstream solution to sexual decline. Women have been told to adjust. To lower expectations. There is no female equivalent: no single pill that restores sensation, hydration, and confidence at once. None that are FDA approved. But there is something more sophisticated: precision medicine, in the hands of a doctor who has lived this story.

I developed the 3-Zone Protocol™, the Uk’s first doctor-led intimate revival protocol, because no single treatment addressed the full picture. Zone 1 restores hydration to the vaginal canal. Zone 2 reawakens intimate sensation. Zone 3 restores volume of the labia - the part that carries the

“We speak of the intimate area in whispers, if at all. And yet it carries us through decades”

memory of how a woman felt at her most vital. Women who complete the protocol describe more than physical change - they describe a return. They say: I feel like myself again. Look 25 again. Feel 25 again - not as nostalgia, but as biological reality.

Spring is not a metaphor. It is permission. If you have been quietly navigating changes you assumed were simply the price of time, I invite you to begin a different conversation. A private consultation at Harley Street or Bromley takes sixty minutes. What it returns to you can last considerably longer.

Prioritise your long-term vitality. Take our clinical suitability assessment (scan QR code opposite) to see how the 3-Zone Protocol can benefit you.

The Best Gift for Mum? Peace of Mind at Home.

ATime for Reflection

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate everything our mums have done for us. From everyday sacrifices to lifelong guidance and support, their care has shaped who we are.

For many families, however, this time of year also brings reflection. You may begin to notice small changes. Mum might be moving more slowly, feeling less confident going out alone, forgetting appointments, or finding household tasks more tiring than before. These changes are often gradual, and it can be difficult to know whether they are simply part of ageing or a sign that a little extra support would help.

When Worry Becomes a Daily Thought

Sarah, a local daughter balancing work and family life, began to notice her mum skipping meals and avoiding the stairs. At first, she told herself it was nothing serious. But the worry lingered. She found herself calling several times a day to check in and feeling anxious when she couldn’t get through.

After arranging a few hours of weekly support, everything changed. Her mum regained confidence with gentle encouragement, regular meals, and help around the house. Sarah no

longer felt constant anxiety. Instead, she could enjoy visiting her mum without the stress of trying to manage everything alone.

Protecting Independence

At Caremark Bromley & Lewisham, we believe introducing care is not about taking independence away. It is about protecting it. Support can begin with just a few hours each week. This might include meal preparation, medication reminders, mobility assistance, companionship, or help with personal care. Every care plan is personalised, flexible, and built around familiar routines.

We carefully match carers based not only on training and experience, but also on personality. Trust and consistency are essential, particularly for those living with dementia or recovering from illness.

A Different Kind of Gift

For families, the difference can be profound. Instead of daily worry, you gain reassurance. Instead of feeling stretched between responsibilities, you know there is compassionate support in place.

This Mother’s Day, alongside flowers and cards, consider another meaningful gift. The comfort of knowing Mum is supported, safe, and able to remain in the place she feels most at home.

If you are considering support, booking a free care assessment can help you explore what feels right for your family.

Taking the First Steps When a Loved One Shows Signs of Dementia

KYN Bickley’s Home Manager, Daisy Slavkova, talks through the steps to take when a loved one shows signs of dementia.

Discovering that someone you know may be living with dementia can feel overwhelming. Many families describe this stage as a mixture of uncertainty, worry, and the instinct to “do the right thing” without quite knowing what that is. The good news is that there are helpful, gentle steps you can take early on — steps that can make a meaningful difference to your loved one’s wellbeing and your family’s confidence.

One of the most important first actions is to notice changes without rushing to conclusions. Dementia can affect memory, communication, mood, sleep, and daytoday independence in subtle ways. Understanding the difference between mild cognitive impairment and dementia, and knowing when professional assessment is appropriate, helps families make informed decisions with calm and clarity.

Maintaining routines while keeping daily life engaging and meaningful is an important early intervention. Activities such as gardening, gentle movement, or simply looking through familiar photographs can offer reassurance and stimulate cognitive function. There is also extensive evidence to support creative therapies — especially art and music— have shown remarkable positive effects in helping people express themselves, reduce anxiety, and maintain connection.

Consistent mealtimes, predictable daily rhythms, and sleepsupportive habits often reduce confusion and promote a sense of safety. Small environmental changes such as labelled cupboards may help to significantly support independence as needs evolve.

At some point, families often wonder what specialised dementia care looks like. A dedicated dementiafriendly environment typically offers tailored activities, staff trained in cognitive support, thoughtfully designed spaces, and highly personalised care planning.

If you are beginning this journey, the team at KYN Bickley led by Queens Nurse and Director of Clinical and Dementia Care Suzanne Mumford can help. KYN’s dementiaspecialist staff can guide you through questions, offer practical advice, and explain what compassionate, personalised care looks like at every stage. KYN Bickley also hosts events, talks, and informal dropin sessions, giving families a chance to learn, ask questions, and feel supported in a warm, welcoming environment.

You are not alone — and with the right guidance, the early steps can become steadier, clearer, and far less daunting. For more information, please visit kyn.co.uk

PILKINGTONS: Specialists in high end repairs of standard and customised Rolex’s

Few brands in the world command the instant recognition and reverence of Rolex. Synonymous with precision, prestige and permanence, Rolex has spent more than a century redefining what a wristwatch can represent. From the waterproof ingenuity of the Oyster case in 1926 to the pioneering Perpetual rotor that changed automatic watchmaking forever, Rolex has consistently set the benchmark for innovation. Its timepieces have scaled Everest, dived to record ocean depths and graced the wrists of cultural icons, world leaders and sporting legends.

Yet beyond its technical mastery lies something more powerful: emotional longevity. A Submariner, Day-Date or Datejust is rarely just a purchase; it marks milestones, celebrates achievement and often becomes a family heirloom. Rolex’s enduring design language — refined, recognisable, uncompromising — ensures that each piece remains as relevant decades from now as it is today.

Of course, a watch built to last generations deserves equally careful stewardship. That’s where trusted local expertise becomes invaluable.

In the heart of Bexley Village, Pilkington Jewellers Ltd has been quietly serving its community since 1970. This established, family-run jeweller understands that luxury watches are not merely accessories, but investments and sentimental treasures. Offering professional watch servicing, strap adjustments and battery replacements — often carried out while you wait — Pilkington’s combines convenience with craftsmanship. More detailed repairs are handled with meticulous attention, ensuring treasured timepieces continue to perform flawlessly.

Beyond watch care, Pilkington Jewellers provides a full suite of jewellery services, from bespoke commissions to repairs and restorations. Their approachable, knowledgeable team offers something increasingly rare: personal service grounded in decades of experience.

Rolex may be a global symbol of excellence, but its legacy lives on through the hands that maintain it. In Bexley Village, Pilkington Jewellers ensures that every tick continues with precision — preserving not just the mechanics of time, but the stories it carries.

HOUSE & GARDEN

The Future is already IN YOUR GARDEN

There was a time when building a swimming pool was a purely aspirational decision. Bigger was better. Concrete was king. Environmental impact was rarely part of the conversation. But the world has changed — and so have the expectations we place on our homes.

Today, sustainability isn’t a trend or a talking point. It’s a lens through which almost every design decision is made. From energy-efficient appliances to low-impact materials, homeowners are thinking long-term. They’re asking not just how something looks on day one, but how it performs over decades — financially, practically, and environmentally.

Swimming pools are no exception.

The traditional concrete pool, once the unquestioned standard, is increasingly being scrutinised. Its construction is labour-intensive and material-heavy, requiring large volumes of concrete and steel — both of which carry significant carbon emissions before the pool is even filled with water. Ongoing refurbishments, higher chemical use, and energy-hungry maintenance only add to the footprint over time.

“Today, sustainability isn’t a trend or a talking point. It’s a lens through which almost every design decision is made”

Fiberglass pools, by contrast, reflect the way the world is now building. Manufactured offsite in controlled environments, they use fewer raw materials and dramatically reduce on-site construction time. Installation is faster, disruption is lower, and heavy machinery use is minimised — all contributing to a smaller environmental impact from the outset.

One question often arises in this conversation: what about transport? After all, fiberglass pools are delivered as complete shells, sometimes over long distances. But sustainability isn’t measured at a single point in time — it’s measured across the entire lifecycle of a product.

While transport does create emissions, it is a one-time event. A concrete pool, on the other hand, requires multiple deliveries of cement, steel, formwork, and equipment over weeks or months, alongside the emissions produced in manufacturing cement itself — one of the most carbon-intensive materials in construction. When viewed holistically, a single delivery is often far outweighed by what’s avoided.

More importantly, the benefits of fiberglass continue long after installation is complete.

A high-quality fiberglass pool has a smooth, non-porous surface that naturally resists algae growth. This reduces the need for chemicals, lowers water turnover, and decreases energy consumption year after year. Over the lifespan of a pool — often several decades — these efficiencies compound, delivering significantly lower environmental impact and reduced running costs.

This mirrors a broader shift we already accept elsewhere. Many of the most sustainable products we rely on — solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, electric vehicles — are manufactured off-site and transported. Their environmental value comes not from where they’re made, but from what they save over time.

“Luxury has evolved. It’s no longer about how much is used, but how well something works”

Advances in fiberglass technology have further strengthened this position. Manufacturers such as Aqua Technics have focused on longevity, structural integrity, and refined finishes, proving that sustainability and premium design are no longer mutually exclusive.

As outdoor spaces become more integrated into the overall performance of a home, the pool is no longer a standalone luxury. It’s part of a bigger system — one that needs to align with modern values of efficiency, durability, and responsibility.

That’s where builders like XL Pools come in. By embracing advanced fiberglass technology and environmentally conscious design, the focus shifts away from excess and toward intelligence — pools that are easier to maintain, kinder to the environment, and designed to stand the test of time.

Luxury has evolved. It’s no longer about how much is used, but how well something works. And in that context, the future of pool design isn’t louder or heavier. It’s smarter — and increasingly, it’s already taking shape in backyards built for what comes next.

Where Local Craft Meets Modern Living

In the bustling suburban heart of Bromley, where Victorian terraces brush shoulders with contemporary living spaces, a quietly ambitious business is reshaping how locals view fitted interiors. Pioneer Kitchen and Bedroom Ltd may be modest in size, but for those in the know it represents something increasingly rare in the home renovation world: craftsmanship with heart and a truly personal touch.

Founded in 2020 and rooted on Burnt Ash Lane, Pioneer blends traditional woodworking sensibilities with a modern understanding of how we live today. While larger brands dominate the high-street showrooms with expansive marketing campaigns and glossy gloss lacquer finishes, this independent specialises in what many homeowners really crave bespoke, thoughtfully designed kitchen and bedroom solutions that feel built for you, not mass-produced.

Stepping inside Pioneer’s space, you immediately sense a different pace. It’s not about upselling the latest fad or pushing the priciest package; it’s about listening. Clients often comment on the approachable, supportive conversations they have with the team, a stark contrast to corporate showrooms where appointments can feel rushed and impersonal. While detailed online reviews for Pioneer locally are limited, the business enjoys high ratings from those who’ve taken the plunge, reflecting trust and satisfaction among its clientele. What sets Pioneer apart is its grounded commitment to quality materials and a tailored process. Every kitchen layout and bedroom installation is treated as a bespoke project, with careful attention paid to ergonomics, storage innovation and long-term durability, a philosophy that increasingly resonates in an era of throwaway design. It’s a home interiors ethos that quietly challenges the “one-size-fits-all” approach, instead championing spaces that genuinely reflect the homeowners’ lifestyles and personalities.

In a borough where neighbours often swap recommendations for tradespeople over fences, Pioneer’s reputation grows through word of mouth, perhaps the greatest compliment a small business can receive. For Bromley residents dreaming of a kitchen that feels like home or a bedroom wardrobe intelligently crafted to fit every need, this local maker is quietly proving that independence and attention to detail still matter in a world of big-box interiors.

HOW TO BUILD THE ULTIMATE HOBBY ROOM

In the words of Lao Tzu, “To know others is wisdom. To know yourself is enlightenment.” Hobbies are the embodiment of self-understanding, much like building our dream homes. They are pursuits we engage in not for financial gain or outside recognition, but for the enrichment of our human experience.

Therefore, it is paramount that your space can play host to the things you love most. From vinyl aficionados to gaming gurus, knitting maestros to grail collectors, the rule is simple: have at least one room that is, essentially, a larger extension of your brain’s greatest daydreams. For all you passion seekers out there, here are the starting points for building your ultimate hobby hideout.

The core concept: You want to be able to tell a story that sparks curiosity — one that builds anticipation in any like-minded individuals (whether they want to hear it or not) about how this room creates the single greatest experience you could hope for.

For example, Brionvega is one of the foremost speaker system innovators in the world and has been creating audiological marvels since the 50s. Their mid-century charm, paired with decades of sound-engineering majesty, delivers one of the world’s best vinyl listening experiences. Like many legends of niche interests, Achille Castiglioni’s

Radiofonografo even has an official owners’ club for those who belong to this exclusive group.

Absolute cinema – Movie Watchers: Now that we’ve discussed the DNA of the perfect personal space, let’s explore which pieces are ideal for the hobbies we love so dearly — starting with a personal favourite of mine. As all film geeks know, half the battle when getting into a movie happens off-screen. Not off-camera, but in the space around

you. Setting up your own personal cinema room is about as intimate as it gets for those of us who are fans of the silver screen.

Add some dramatic dimmable lamps and take on your own cinematic universe from the comfort of a Cassina armchair. Want the true multiplex experience? Invest in Poltrona Frau’s collaboration with camera legends Leica, which projects picture-perfect quality right from the TV unit into your home.

Turn it up – Music Listeners:

Music is the language of the world. Love stories are told, tragedies are compressed into three-minute sonatas, and a collection of your fondest memories exists in melodic form. It doesn’t even need lyrics for you to understand the message. Imagine keeping a library that contains all of that — you’d want it to be your own personal listening paradise.

Storage is usually a great place to start. You need somewhere to put the things you aren’t using, so you aren’t overwhelmed by materials and tools. Next comes seating — this needs to be mobile, adjustable, and able to fit comfortably within the rest of your space. Style is more of an optional extra in this regard. Finally, while we specialise in surfaces, we don’t want to recommend breaking out the paint-by-numbers on any of them, so we’ll leave that to you.

You’re going to need a place to sit back, store your special songs, and hear every note in pitch-perfect quality. The following steps are our recommended failsafe: combine bespoke storage from USM with that megastar of vintage aesthetics: the Eames Lounge Chair. Then dial it up to eleven (I tried to avoid the Spinal Tap reference — I really did) with a sound system from Brionvega or Transparent.

What you make of it

– Craft Lovers:

Other hobbies take a more DIY approach — for the practically-minded among us who pass the time quilting, crocheting, and painting to their heart’s content. After all, nothing makes a house feel more like a home than making space for your own creations, amplified further when those pieces are made within the boundaries of your abode. So, what path can you take to create the perfect crafting space?

“You’re going to need a place to sit back, store your special songs, and hear every note in pitch-perfect quality”

Read the room - Bookworms

Is the local library still not quiet enough? Want to be the sole member of your own book club? The obvious prerequisite for this hobby is, of course, literature. But the design that transforms a space into your own reading room — one that lets the words transport you to another world from the comfort of home — is the ultimate goal.

This one is a little looser on the guidelines: all the below are a matter of personal preference and are largely down to the individual. Pick a comfy chair (with a side table to match), a glowing floor lamp, and an even bigger bookcase — and you’ve got your reading room. Decorate the shelves with your favourite personal effects, and light a candle for added ambience.

Design-forward living in the heart of Sevenoaks by Schmidt

Set within a full-scale family renovation in leafy Kent, this modern kitchen and bespoke dressing room offer a masterclass in material contrast, hidden function, and everyday elegance. Designed in partnership with Schmidt, the spaces reflect a seamless blend of minimalist form and thoughtful craftsmanship.

“We wanted something that felt cohesive with the rest of the home - modern, neutral, but with a real sense of character,” the homeowners explain. “The kitchen is now the centrepiece of family life. It is not just where we cook, it is where we gather.”

Central to the kitchen’s impact is the large island, with Bosca Stria doors. Their textured surface adds both visual depth and architectural flow.

To maintain an uncluttered aesthetic, the design intentionally omits wall units. Instead, Jumbo Line drawers and deep cabinetry offer discreet storage, while a generous walk-in pantry ensures everything has its place.

“The clever storage was essential,” they say. “We wanted the kitchen to feel open and calm, but it still had to function for daily family use. The internal layout made that possible.”

By contrast, the dressing room posed a different challenge: a compact footprint with limited natural light. Here, the focus was on

“We wanted the kitchen to feel open and calm, but it still had to function for daily family use. The internal layout made that possible”

creating a streamlined, high-function space without compromising on finish. Bespoke cabinetry and smart internal fittings maximised every inch.

Beyond design, the couple were also drawn to Schmidt’s sustainability credentials, including eco-certified materials and a circular approach to manufacturing. “That ethos really appealed to us. It felt like a brand aligned with the values we were trying to build into our home.”

Despite unforeseen delays from contractors, the Schmidt team remained agile. “They were brilliant, adaptable with timing, and genuinely collaborative in guiding layout and material choices.”

The renovation took place over six months, integrated into the broader construction programme. The result is a home that feels elevated yet effortless. “The walk-in pantry is always a talking point, and the island drawers make staying organised surprisingly easy. It has transformed how we live.”

Their advice for anyone starting a similar journey? “Take the time to explore materials and finishes in person. And work with a team who really understand how you want to live.”

How H Lilley & Co Is Bringing the Future of Bathroom Design Home

Bathrooms in 2026 are no longer purely functional spaces — they are personal sanctuaries, wellness retreats, and intelligent design statements. At the forefront of delivering these transformative spaces is H Lilley & Co, a trusted supplier and installer turning the latest trends into beautifully finished realities for homeowners.

This year’s defining style is spa-inspired minimalism. Soft neutral palettes — think clay, sand, and muted sage — create calming environments, while textured stone basins, fluted wood vanities, and brushed brass or matte black fittings add warmth and depth. Walk-in wet rooms and frameless glass enclosures continue to grow in popularity, offering sleek accessibility and seamless luxury. With expert product sourcing and precision installation, H Lilley & Co ensures these refined details are executed flawlessly.

Technology is also reshaping the modern bathroom. App-controlled underfloor heating, LED mirrors with integrated demisters and adjustable lighting, and digital showers that allow personalised temperature settings are becoming standard features. Sustainability is equally influential, with watersaving fixtures and eco-conscious materials high on homeowners’ wish lists. By supplying cutting-edge innovations alongside energy-efficient solutions, H Lilley & Co helps clients futureproof their homes without compromising comfort or style.

Statement features remain central to 2026 design. Sculptural freestanding baths, oversized porcelain tiles, and bespoke vanity units create focal points within clean, contemporary layouts. Storage has evolved too, with recessed shelving, floating cabinetry, and cleverly concealed compartments maintaining the uncluttered aesthetic today’s homeowners demand.

What sets H Lilley & Co apart is not just access to premium products, but the service they provide, from consultation to design advice. Their tailored approach ensures every bathroom reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle, whether upgrading a compact cloakroom or designing a luxury master ensuite.

In 2026, the bathroom is more than a room; it is a reflection of how we live and unwind. Powering The Pickleball Movement

he humble paddle and perforated ball are fast becoming as recognisable in UK parks as a football or tennis racket — and with good reason. Pickleball, a sport that blends the best of badminton, tennis and table tennis, has exploded in popularity across Britain. Once the preserve of a niche group of enthusiasts, it now attracts everyone from retirees seeking low-impact exercise, to families, to competitive social players. The sport’s inclusive nature — easy to pick up yet hard to master — has sparked the opening of dozens of new courts up and down the country.

In towns and cities, and increasingly in village halls and leisure centres, players can be spotted clicking across portable nets in everyone’s favourite new pastime. The appeal of pickleball lies in its accessibility. The court is smaller, the gear is inexpensive, and games are short and sociable. That mix has helped smash traditional barriers to participation, attracting people who may never have considered themselves “sports players”.

Behind this surge is a growing demand for quality playing surfaces, and that’s where Martin Gurr Tennis Courts has positioned itself at the heart of the movement. With decades of expertise in designing, installing and maintaining tennis

and multi-sport courts, Martin Gurr has extended its services to support the pickleball boom — offering tailored solutions to meet the needs of clubs, councils, schools and private clients.

What sets Martin Gurr apart is its comprehensive turnkey service. From initial site surveys and consultation, to court design, surface selection and precise line marking, every step is handled with professionalism and care. They supply bespoke permanent pickleball courts as well as adaptable solutions on existing tennis or multi-use surfaces — maximising both budget and space. Their installations use high-quality, weather-resilient materials designed to deliver consistent playability and longevity, and clients benefit from expert aftercare services including resurfacing and ongoing maintenance.

As local authorities and community organisations look to invest in facilities that promote participation and wellbeing, Martin Gurr’s consultative approach ensures that new installations are fit for purpose, sustainable and future-proofed. In a landscape where pickleball is rapidly becoming part of Britain’s sporting fabric, Martin Gurr Tennis Courts are helping to build the courts where memories — and rivalries — are made.

Celebrating 30 Years of Wellness

This year marks a proud milestone for BETA Wellness UK (Riptide Pools Ltd.) — 30 years at our first showroom in Chelmsford serving our local communities there and in more recent years, also in our Sevenoaks and Ashford branches. Many will still remember us as Hot Tub Barn, but we’ve recently rebranded to reflect something much bigger than a name change.

Our new identity represents our commitment not just to relaxation, but to complete home wellness.

For three decades, we have helped families transform their gardens into spaces for connection, recovery and year-round enjoyment. With three showrooms in Chelmsford, Ashford and Sevenoaks, and a team whose experience spans many years — in some cases decades — we are proud to remain a trusted, family-feel business rooted in local knowledge and personal service.

The way we view outdoor living has changed. Today, a hot tub is more than a luxury feature; it’s a space to unwind after busy workdays, reconnect with family, and prioritise wellbeing. Our range of Riptide hot tubs and swim spas — including powerful exercise pools designed for low-impact training — reflects this shift. Swim spas in particular, have grown in popularity, offering the benefits of swimming, hydrotherapy and relaxation in one compact, energy-efficient solution. As we enter our fourth decade, we’re expanding further into health-focused products. We are excited to be launching the BETA Wellness ice bath and infrared sauna range, bringing the benefits of contrast therapy, muscle recovery and stress reduction into the home. These additions mark an important step in our evolution from hot tub specialist to complete wellness provider. While our name has evolved, our ethos remains the same: honest advice, exceptional aftercare and a genuine passion for helping our customers invest in their wellbeing.

If you’re curious about how a hot tub, swim spa or home wellness space could enhance your lifestyle, our wellness teams would be delighted to welcome you and share the benefit of 30 years’ experience.

Where Craft Meets Contemporary Tile Design

In an era of soulless national DIY sheds and generic retail parks, there is something increasingly rare about a specialist showroom that has occupied the same corner of a community for over a quarter of a century. Located on London Road in Dunton Green, Freelands Tiles has been a fixture of the Kent design landscape since 1999, quietly establishing itself as one of the largest independent tile specialists in the county.

The business is defined by a curated approach to sourcing. Twice a year, the team travels to Italy and Spain—the traditional heartlands of ceramic production—to hand-pick ranges that are often imported exclusively for their Sevenoaks showroom. This international perspective is balanced by a commitment to British manufacturing, with the company stocking prominent homegrown names such as Original Style and Ca’ Pietra. The result is a collection that spans the practical and the artisanal, from large-format porcelain to hand-finished decorative pieces.

will fit within the unique dimensions of their hallway or porch before any orders are finalised.

However, the scale of the inventory—frequently cited as the widest selection in the area—is only half the story. The showroom’s longevity is largely attributed to a level of technical expertise that is almost impossible to find within a highstreet chain. With over a century of combined experience, the staff operate less as sales assistants and more as consultants, offering guidance on everything from the intricacies of wetroom tanking to the nuances of natural stone maintenance.

“A particular area of expertise lies in the supply of traditional Victorian floor tiles”

A particular area of expertise lies in the supply of traditional Victorian floor tiles. These intricate geometric patterns are a hallmark of British period properties, but their complexity requires careful planning. To assist with this, Freelands offers a bespoke CAD (Computer-Aided Design) service specifically for Victorian tile projects. By producing detailed digital layouts, they allow clients to visualise exactly how specific colours, borders, and patterns

As the industry shifts further towards automated, faceless commerce, Freelands Tiles remains a compelling argument for the physical showroom. It is a place where professional tradespeople and local homeowners alike can find not just the materials they require, but the genuine expertise necessary to use them effectively. In Dunton Green, it seems, the art of the specialist is alive and well.

What you see is what you get excited about Design and build are equally important.

Contractors that excel in both are a real find.

For the Dakins, who planned a garden room extension that could be used year-round, it was important that design and construction worked to create a long term solution.

‘The timber framework that supported the patio had rotted away and to re-engineer it in something more durable would have been too expensive.’ More to the point, the Dakins felt that they would get more use from an extra room than an outside space that a north east facing garden might offer.

‘We wanted somewhere for the grandchildren to play when they come over and enjoy more natural light as well as access to the garden.’

Fineline’s consultant came to the meeting armed with laptop and CAD software, ready to translate the Dakins’ requirements into a design. ‘It’s very different from the guy who comes over and roughs it out on a scrap of paper. The room took shape before our eyes.’

For retired engineer and IT worker Anthony Dakin, such an approach was heartening. ‘It gives you confidence that you are going to get what you talked about, and you know it’s feasible because you’re looking at a scale drawing with clear dimensions reflecting the realities of the site.’

The Fineline design process also considers building regulations requirements so the system is able to provide a close estimate of the likely cost of construction, including permissions, materials and labour.

Budget is always an issue with any improvement project, but it’s important to put it in perspective. ‘I think the main point for us is that you don’t want to be saying, I wish we’d spent ten percent more to have what we wanted.’

Finelines professional approach was demonstrated by a visit to the Chelmsford showroom, where staff were knowledgable and able to answer technical questions that helped crystallise the specification.

‘They were also clear about scheduling, and always on time for appointments’ Mr Dakin recalls. ‘The back office comms were good too, and the project manager introduced and coordinated teams efficiently throughout.’

The project was completed in six weeks and is a big improvement to the Dakins’ home, giving them a year-round space for enjoying time with their extended family. The insulation and high spec glazing maintain a comfortable temperature and heating through the house is balanced between rooms. The additional light and connection to the garden extend the day especially in the summer evenings.
