UKRAINIAN NATIONAL OPERA® PRESENTS CARMEN
We are delighted to bring back Dnipro Opera theatre from the Ukraine for our next Opera Season. This opera and ballet theatre has a long-standing heritage of top-quality opera productions, and we are excited to bring it back to the UK. Carmen - feel the thrill of fiery passion, jealousy, and violence of 19th century Seville Bizet’s most popular opera. Carmen tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who falls head over heels in love with Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale. The infatuated Don José abandons his childhood sweetheart and neglects his military duties, only to lose the fickle Carmen to the glamorous toreador Escamillo. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for the brilliance of its melodies, enthralling atmosphere, and orchestration, as well as for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters. The Toreador Song is among the best known of all operatic arias. The rich and colourful vigour of the gypsies’ scenes will have you on the edge of your seat, the vibrancy, enthusiasm, and intensity of the performances will reverberate long after the final curtain has fallen.

Often referred to as ‘England in stone’, here, stories of church and state intersect. You can sense this in the majesty of the medieval building, the quiet mystery of the crypt, the solemnity of the Martyrdom chapel – site of Thomas Becket’s murder - and as your imagination is fired walking through the beautiful gardens, cloisters, and monastic ruins.
Pay once and visit free all year! Your visitor admission is valid for 12 months, meaning you can revisit as often as you want, as well as enjoy free access to the many special seasonal exhibitions and visitor events included with Cathedral admission.

What did Anne Boleyn really look like? Nearly 500 years after her execution, historians still disagree. That question sits at the heart of Capturing a Queen: The Image of Anne Boleyn, a major new exhibition at Hever Castle that brings together more than 30 competing likenesses of England’s most enigmatic queen, the exhibition invites visitors to examine the evidence for themselves and even vote for the portrait they believe best captures the real woman behind the myth. Here are seven surprising things the exhibition reveals about Anne Boleyn.
1. Anne may not have been dark-haired Anne is often labelled brunette, but in Tudor England brunet referred to complexion, not hair colour. With a red-haired daughter, she may well have had auburn or red hair herself.
2. Anne was never praised as a great beauty She was described during her lifetime by Venetian ambassador Francesco Sanuto as “not one of the handsomest women in the world; of middling stature, swarthy complexion, long neck, wide mouth and eyes which are black and beautiful.”

3. Anne was strikingly fashion-forward The ‘B’ pattern portraits on display at Hever consistently show Anne as stylish and modern - from her French hood to her pearl jewelleryunderlining her role as a Tudor trendsetter.
4. Anne’s wit mattered more than her looks As Hever Castle historian Kate McCaffrey explains: “Her appeal to Henry was far greater than just her looks: it was her charisma, her intelligence, her wit, her education, her style and her substance.”
5. Anne helped shape her own image One of the few likenesses created during Anne’s lifetime is the ‘Moost Happi Medal’, produced around her coronation and presumably approved for use by Anne. The original, on loan from the British Museum, will be on show in the exhibition.
6. Anne was put back on display by her daughter During Elizabeth I’s reign, Anne’s image appeared prominently in corridor portrait sets, and was displayed again as part of the visual culture surrounding Elizabeth’s coronation, quietly restoring her mother to the Tudor story.
7. Anne was never truly erased Research for the exhibition debunks the long-held belief that Anne’s image was destroyed after her execution. Her symbols and cyphers continued to appear in royal inventories so her erasure was rhetorical, not physical.
Capturing A Queen: The Image of Anne Boleyn runs at Hever Castle & Gardens from 11 February 2026 - 2 January 2027. www.hevercastle.co.uk

NEW CASTLE EXHIBITION starts 11 February 2026 until 2 January 2027

Ightham Mote is a perfectly preserved moated manor house where you can journey through 700 years of history, from medieval beginnings to the present day.
The core building dates from the 1340s, and a series of alterations and additions were made in the late 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. A moat surrounds the four wings of the house, which in turn is built around an open courtyard. Externally it shows little sign of change, but when it comes to the interior decoration, successive generations have responded to the new fashions. The house is also full of stories of a once-cherished family home, with each owner leaving their legacy.

gardens, lawns and borders leading to more open and relaxed areas of planting and woodland. There are also streams and lakes fed by natural springs, an orchard, and a recently reinstated walled garden.
The wider estate offers walks with secret glades and countryside views, as well as carpets of bluebells in spring. Maps of suggested routes are available from the Visitor Centre. There’s also a natural play area for younger visitors to explore.
The Mote Café is open for drinks, snacks and light lunches while the gift shop offers souvenirs, homeware, food and locally made gifts.
Events take place at Ightham Mote throughout the year. To kick things off in 2026, from 14 February to 8 March the National Trust is celebrating the release of Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers”, in cinemas 6 March. Discover the ‘Hop into the wild’ self-guided family trail at Ightham Mote, with storytelling and outdoor play. Collect your discovery passport, explore the animal kingdoms, and most importantly, unleash your wild side!
Then come Easter Adventures. Between 21 March and 19 April make your way along the trail and find activities for the whole family. Price is £3.50 per trail which includes an Easter trail sheet, bunny ears and dairy or vegan and Free From* chocolate egg (*suitable for people with milk, egg, gluten, peanut and tree nut allergies).

For one unforgettable weekend each year, the Kent & East Sussex Railway doesn’t just travel through history – it becomes it.
On 16 and 17 May, the much-loved 1940s Weekend transforms this charming heritage line into a living, breathing snapshot of wartime Britain, inviting visitors to step into the sights, sounds and spirit of the Home Front.
Set amid the rolling countryside of the Rother Valley, the 10.5-mile railway runs from Tenterden to Bodiam through the High Weald National Landscape – a setting perfectly suited to a journey back in time. Throughout the weekend, heritage steam and diesel trains are joined by re-enactors, vintage vehicles, military displays and period music that brings Tenterden and Bodiam stations to life.
Music is at the heart of the celebrations, with performances throughout the weekend from the hugely popular D-Day Darlings, alongside My Favourite Things, filling the air with wartime classics and much-loved swing tunes. Visitors are encouraged to dress the part, and platforms come alive with service uniforms, floral dresses and sharp suits, creating an immersive and nostalgic atmosphere for all ages.
At Tenterden Station, one of the weekend’s standout attractions awaits: a full-size replica Spitfire, on display throughout the event, offering a striking and memorable tribute to Britain’s wartime aviation heritage and a must-see for history enthusiasts and families alike.
Before boarding, Tenterden Station invites you to linger. The Art Deco Tea Room serves a tempting range of refreshments, while the Colonel Stephens Museum tells the fascinating story of this pioneering light railway. At Bodiam, visitors can view the historic Cavell Van or take a short stroll to the famous castle.
Running alongside a full programme of special events throughout the year, the 1940s Weekend remains one of the Kent & East Sussex Railway’s highlights – a chance to celebrate heritage and nostalgia, all while enjoying a truly memorable day out.

As parents look for activities that genuinely benefit their children beyond simple entertainment, indoor climbing stands out as a sport that develops both body and mind. What appears playful is in fact a thoughtful blend of physical movement, problem solving and emotional growth.
Climbing encourages young people to think before they move. Each route is a physical puzzle requiring planning, adaptability and focus. This regular decision making develops spatial awareness, memory and logical thinking. Unlike many traditional sports, progress is individual, helping children measure success against personal improvement rather than comparison with others. The rise of bouldering, where walls are lower and climbing takes place without ropes or harnesses above deep safety mats, has made the sport more accessible and increasingly popular.
These benefits are recognised nationally. The National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme, known as NICAS, is supported by Sport England, the British Mountaineering Council and the Association of British Climbing Walls. NICAS provides a structured progression pathway that builds physical literacy,

confidence and safe independence on the wall, and is widely used by schools and accredited climbing centres across the UK.
Mental wellbeing is another important advantage. Climbing demands concentration and presence, drawing attention away from screens and everyday pressures. The sense of achievement that comes from solving a route or overcoming fear builds resilience and self-belief. Research consistently links physical activity with improved mental health in young people, and climbing’s social, non-competitive environment makes it welcoming for those who may not thrive in traditional team sports.
Physically, climbing develops strength, balance, coordination and flexibility across the whole body. Because it is low impact and adaptable, it suits a wide range of ages and abilities, allowing children to progress safely at their own pace.

Rhino Boulder, a state of the art bouldering gym in Bromley town centre, offers family friendly options including coached starter sessions, birthday parties, independent climbing under adult supervision, and NICAS clubs and school groups. Parents are encouraged to ask schools whether climbing is available as part of PE or enrichment programmes.

Rhino Boulder is a community focused indoor bouldering gym offering high quality climbing, inclusive programmes, and a welcoming, social environment for people of all ages and abilities.
For further details, call Rhino Boulder on 020 8050 8720, visit their website at www.rhinoboulder.co.uk, or turn up and climb at their gym in Units 6&7 The Mall, Bromley, BR1 1TR

As the end of the tax year approaches, it’s a good time to pause and check whether you’ve made the most of the allowances available to you. Miss them, and in many cases they’re gone for good. The tax year ends on 5 April, and while that date comes around every year, many people still leave simple opportunities on the table.
Here are a few areas worth reviewing before the deadline.
1. Have you used your ISA allowance?
Each tax year, you can save or invest up to £20,000 into an Individual Savings Account (ISA). Any unused allowance cannot be carried forward, so once the tax year ends, it’s lost. ISAs are a simple way to protect money from tax. Over time, sheltering savings from Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax can make a meaningful difference, particularly for couples who can use two allowances.

“A brief conversation ahead of the deadline can help you start the new tax year with greater clarity and confidence”

2. Are you holding more cash than you need?
Many people keep money in cash because it feels safe. However, inflation steadily reduces its real value over time.
The tax year end is a good point to consider whether some of that cash could be better positioned, in a way that still suits your plans and comfort level.
3. Have you reviewed your pension contributions?
Pensions remain an important part of long-term planning. Before the end of the tax year, it’s worth checking whether contributions are on track or whether unused allowances from earlier years could be used.
4. A timely review makes a difference
Life changes, and so should your financial plans. The tax year end provides a natural opportunity to review where you are and make small adjustments that can have a lasting impact.
Leaving things until the last minute often limits your options. A brief conversation ahead of the deadline can help you start the new tax year with greater clarity and confidence.

The tax year ends on 5 April, and once it’s gone, so is this year’s ISA allowance.
Every tax year, you can invest up to £20,000 into an ISA. If you don’t use it by the deadline, you can’t carry it forward. It’s lost for good.

Q&A with Carsten Lund, Founder of TRIPLA

Q. When we were chatting before this interview, you said luxury is about “ease.” What does that mean to you?
To me, true luxury is when everything flows. That doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful. A wellness retreat in the Alps where transfers, spa treatments, and mountain hikes are seamlessly coordinated. Or a short city break where the flights, hotel, and a hard-to-get dinner reservation are already sorted. We do work with high-touch experiences, but it’s not about the price tag, it’s about removing stress and creating something that feels personal.
Q. In your experience as a traveller and industry professional, have you noticed travel needs changing in recent years?
Very much so. People are no longer just looking for a nice hotel or a beautiful view, they often want something deeper, something that resonates. I’ve noticed a real shift towards travel that feels meaningful. For some, that means behind-the-scenes cultural access; meeting local artisans, exploring places tourists don’t usually see. For others, it’s culinary journeys, connecting with a region through its food and wine. And increasingly, it’s about restoration: wellness retreats, mindful escapes, and time to simply switch off in a way daily life doesn’t allow. Travel has become less about ticking off a destination and more about creating experiences that inspire, enrich, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

We’ve all been there. Ten-tabs deep in-flight options, hotel reviews, and “must-see” lists. Why does organising time away so often feel like a job in itself? We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach.
Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences?
I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens, from barefoot escapes on private islands to cultural weekends in Europe, and even multi-generational cruises or villas. And what always stands out is how much detail matters. The transfer that’s waiting without fuss or the restaurant that actually lives up to its promise. It’s these little things that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.
Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging?
Time, mostly. People are busy, and while travel should be restorative, organising it often isn’t. I’ve seen clients arrive exhausted before their holiday even begins because they’ve spent weeks trying to piece it all together online. One family I worked with wanted a milestone birthday in Tuscany. They’d been overwhelmed by villa choices and didn’t know which were genuinely right for them. We stepped in, found a villa with space for grandparents, teenagers, and young children, complete with a private chef for a celebratory meal and a private wine tasting. For them, it turned from a logistical headache into a celebration they’ll never forget.

Q. With travel uncertainty on the rise, how can travellers be sure their money is safe?
It’s a very real question for many travellers. At TRIPLA, protection isn’t an add-on - it’s the foundation of everything we do. All flight-inclusive holidays are fully ATOL protected, and every client payment is held securely in Trust by NatWest Bank and the Travel Trust Association. This means client money is safeguarded from the moment they book, even in the unlikely event that a supplier or TRIPLA were to fail. In a landscape where reassurance matters, TRIPLA ensures every journey is 100% financially secure.
Q. What’s the best way to start planning a trip with TRIPLA? Everything begins with getting to know you. When clients connect with us - whether online or by getting in touch directly - it gives us a sense of their travel style and helps us start shaping ideas that are genuinely personal. Joining our mailing list also keeps you in the loop with tailored inspiration, updates and occasional offers, including the chance to win a £500 travel voucher. It’s a simple first step toward creating a journey designed entirely around you.
Q. And finally, what do you hope clients feel when they travel with TRIPLA?
Peace of mind, really. That feeling of being looked after so they can just enjoy the experience. Whether it’s a river cruise with private excursions, a birthday in Tuscany, or a quick Parisian escape between board meetings, I want them to feel it was designed just for them. And that they never had to worry about the details.

– The finest independent schools in the UK –

by Tom Quilter
At Bickley Park School, we have always been incredibly proud of our warm and friendly, family feel. Ours is a diverse and rich community, established with kindness very much at its heart. It was that commitment to supporting families that saw the School first founded over 100 years ago and it was that commitment that drove our move to co-education in 2024. Since then, we have been delighted with such a positive response to the news and thrilled by the growing number of girls who have since joined the school. With both girls and boys now in Nursery, Pre-School, Reception and Year 1, it has been a great privilege to see this new chapter in the school’s history unfold.

In a school like ours, it is now common to see brothers and sisters learning and growing together. Having siblings in one school brings powerful benefits: children feel a shared sense of belonging, parents build stronger relationships with staff and one another, and routines become simpler and more secure for busy families.
From a practical perspective, one drop-off, one set of values and one familiar community can make daily life calmer and more manageable. More importantly, it allows us to truly get to know families, support them consistently and work in partnership to give every child the best possible start in life.
Certainly, our move to co-education gave families the opportunity to twin excellence with convenience, by sending all their children to Bickley Park.
From the moment a child starts their journey with us, we are determined to spark and nurture a life-long love of learning. Whether they are busy learning Forest School skills, having fun in the mud kitchen, or out and about on trips that tie in with our creative curriculum, the children in our Nursery and Pre-School embrace every element of our unique Four Quadrants of Learning right from the start.
This well-rounded learning experience including specialist subject teaching, encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning. Together the Four Quadrants arm our pupils with skills for life: a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks. As children move through the school, our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie.
Our priority is the children’s happiness in their learning and this in turn is reflected in their outstanding progress. Over the years, we have continued to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam.
In terms of the environment in which the children learn, both of our school sites boast exceptional facilities which allow the children from Nursery through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the onsite swimming pool, climbing wall and astroturf pitches, the school provides a breadth of opportunity both in and out of the classroom.

“As children move through the school, our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie”
Preparing children for their futures
Ultimately, what truly sets us apart is the sense of belonging that runs through every aspect of life at Bickley Park. A place where friendships are formed across cultures, where kindness and respect are second nature, and where children feel safe to be themselves enabling them to develop confidence, resilience and respect. It is this strong foundation of care and community that encourages our pupils to flourish, preparing them not only for their next steps in education, but for life beyond the school gates. In short, we encourage them to live our values and ‘Be All You Can Be’.
But don’t just take my word for it, come and see for yourself and find out more about what makes our family so special.

For over 140 years, Bromley High School GDST has been a place where bright, talented girls aged 4 to 18 learn without limits. The school combines academic excellence and emotional wellbeing with the confidence, skills, and vision every girl needs to shape her future.
Why join at age four?
The early years are a golden opportunity to lay strong foundations for learning and future success. At Bromley High Junior School, girls thrive in a stimulating, happy environment where achievements - big and small - are celebrated. Our rich curriculum and broad co-curricular programme spark curiosity and nurture independence, encouraging girls to embrace every opportunity a GDST education offers.
Confidence that lasts a lifetime

believing that boys are ‘smarter’ (UNICEF, 2020). But life in a girls’ school challenges that early on – ensuring every subject, role, and opportunity is open to them.

Research shows GDST girls are more likely to take risks in their learning and believe in their ability to succeed. From Reception, confidence grows through play-based learning and exploration - whether in Forest School, robotics, sports, the creative arts or other – and girls are comfortable participating and trying new things. Early core skills in literacy and numeracy are built and girls form lasting friendships. With consistent pastoral care, an ambitious curriculum and individual support, pupils are wellprepared for life in Year 1 and beyond. Then, in Year 5, they join our pioneering Middle School, designed to ease the transition to Senior School with a bespoke curriculum and tailored pastoral care.
A world designed for girls
Research shows that gender stereotypes begin to form as early as ages two to three, with many girls by age 6

Specialist teaching across subjects such as computing, music, languages and PE helps girls discover talents and interests early on. Specialist spaces for science, ICT, design, and food technology inspire hands-on learning, while unforgettable experiences - like Mathematics at Oxford or Drama at Shakespeare’s Globe - broaden horizons. Beautiful grounds and outstanding facilities, including a swimming pool, sports hall, performance spaces and outdoor classrooms, provide the perfect backdrop for discovery, wellbeing and physical development.
Practical support for families
To help busy parents, the Junior School offers a free late room facility until 4pm and additional wraparound care from 7.30am until 6pm. There are also a variety of co-curricular clubs before and after school across academic subjects, the arts and sport.

Set in the Kent countryside, just 30 minutes from London, Cobham Hall is a co-educational day and boarding school where heritage meets innovation. Founded in 1962 as an all-girls school, the 16thcentury manor has long nurtured confident, compassionate and independent students.
In 2023, Cobham Hall opened its Sixth Form to boys, creating a vibrant co-educational environment where students flourished academically and socially. Building on this success, the School became fully co-educational in September 2025. Brian, one of the first boys to join Year 9, is already thriving. His mother shares “I feel so happy to see my son thriving and enjoying school again. He has only been in Cobham a few weeks and I have seen such incredible changes. I am in awe!”

At its heart, Cobham Hall combines exceptional pastoral care with a personalised curriculum and strong sense of community. Academic excellence remains pivotal, but education extends far beyond the classroom. A rich co-curricular programme in sport, the arts, and enrichment allows students to explore passions, develop resilience, and realise their full potential—as captured in the School’s motto: “There is more in you than you think.”

Starting school is a big step for both children and parents, and at Hazelwood we make sure it is a happy and positive one. In a nurturing, warm and inspiring environment, children take part in Forest School, swimming and a wide range of experiences that spark a lifelong love of learning. Our Upper School Learning Centre is now an established hub for Years 5–8. Designed to promote collaboration, creativity and critical thinking, it features adaptable furniture, brainstorming zones and wipeable walls for free-flowing ideas. The space feels more like a modern workplace than a traditional classroom, and the progress pupils make during these pivotal four years is remarkable.

The ‘best of both worlds’, the ‘ideal mix’, the ‘place I always dreamt of finding’ – these are just some of the comments we often hear from families when they first discover Somerhill. Set within a stunning 400-year-old Jacobean mansion surrounded by 150 acres of parkland, Somerhill is a beautifully unique independent prep school where learning, adventure and childhood flourish in equal measure.
Our grounds are not simply a backdrop, but a vital part of everyday life. Children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover, whether in the classroom, the woodlands, fields, or gardens. It is in these moments that curiosity grows, friendships are formed, and confidence begins to take shape. There is a tangible sense of joy across Somerhill, and the sound of laughter carries through the grounds.
We have a simple belief: happy children want
to learn. This is a school where pupils are encouraged to ‘get stuck in’ – to try new things and embrace the endless opportunities on offer, take on challenges, and celebrate their progress along the way. Success in sport can build resilience in the classroom; achievement in music can inspire leadership or creative expression. We aim to nurture confident, kind, and capable young people who persevere and believe in themselves.
What truly sets Somerhill apart is our distinctive model: we have one way of living, but two ways of learning. From ages 2 to 7, boys and girls learn together in a co-educational environment that celebrates play, creativity and curiosity. From 7 to 13, pupils are taught in single-sex classes, allowing teaching to be tailored to different learning styles, while still enjoying a fully co-educational experience beyond the classroom. Break times, sports, clubs and activities are shared, creating a strong sense of community where every child feels known and valued.
Somerhill is more than just a school; it is a place where children are encouraged to be themselves, to grow in confidence and to embrace opportunity. We warmly invite families to visit us at one of our upcoming open mornings in March or May, or to arrange a personal tour with our admissions team.
Come and experience Somerhill for yourself – a place where we grow amazing people.

Alex Murphy, Deputy Head Academic at St Dunstan’s
College Junior School discusses how important early years education is in creating the foundations for the future
In independent education, questions of value for money have never been more sharply in focus. With fee increases linked to VAT changes and a cost of living that continues to challenge families, parents are scrutinising their investment in schooling more closely than ever. Schools often respond by showcasing their academic credentials, through league tables, exam statistics, university destinations. These are important indicators, but they paint only part of the picture. The true value of education is not captured solely in numbers; it is reflected in the individual a child becomes.
Independent education has sometimes been characterised as elitist or narrowly focused on academic attainment. This perception is increasingly outdated and does not align with what schools or families want for children today. A values-driven education where the development of the whole child sits at the centre of a school’s ethos should be a priority across all sectors. When children feel supported, understood, and inspired, academic success naturally follows. Curiosity, a thirst for understanding, and a desire to make sense of the world are innate to childhood. But academic outcomes should not be prioritised at the expense of character, wellbeing, or emotional resilience. Families seeking the best education are placing far greater emphasis on ethos, wellbeing, and values than on exam results alone.

“The true value of education is not captured solely in numbers; it is reflected in the individual a child becomes”
Academic achievement undoubtedly matters. Strong results open doors and create future opportunity. However, grades alone do not prepare children for the world they will enter. Without the ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, empathise with others, and navigate complexity, academic success risks becoming a narrow and fragile measure. Increasingly, employers and universities alike are seeking individuals who can learn independently, solve problems creatively, and approach new challenges with confidence and curiosity. In a rapidly evolving world, the most valuable skills of the future will be those that transcend subject boundaries.
Yet these human skills cannot be quantified on a spreadsheet. They do not sit neatly within performance tables. They are shaped in everyday moments of interaction, in the ethos of a school, and in the opportunities children are afforded to practise, reflect, and grow. This understanding is driving a noticeable shift: parents are choosing schools not simply because of rankings, but because their values align with those of the school community. They want environments where character, wellbeing, and personal growth sit comfortably alongside academic ambition.
Junior school pupils are at a pivotal stage in their development. Every classroom collaboration, playground negotiation, and moment of reflection contributes to the formation of character. These early years forge empathy, resilience, integrity, and independence, qualities that serve as lifelong foundations. If education focuses too narrowly on academic attainment, it risks producing children who excel in tests yet falter when faced with life’s complexities. By contrast, schools that treat character education as an integral part of learning help children understand themselves, build confidence, and develop the emotional literacy required to thrive. A curriculum that includes metacognition and life skills empowers children not only to acquire knowledge but to understand how they learn, how they respond to challenge, and how they relate to others. This is where true readiness for the future is shaped. It develops young people who can approach uncertainty with resilience, who value diverse perspectives, and who are equipped to contribute positively to their communities. These qualities endure long after their time in school.

“ Junior school pupils are at a pivotal stage in their development. Every classroom collaboration, playground negotiation, and moment of reflection contributes to the formation of character.”

In considering the “value” of an education, we must look beyond the immediate, quantifiable outputs. The most meaningful return on investment lies in the development of the whole child, in their capacity to think deeply, act with integrity, and face the future with a strong sense of self. This is not an optional extra; it is central to what education should provide. Ultimately, developing the individual is both the greatest responsibility and the greatest impact a school can have. It is also, in the truest sense, the most enduring value parents will ever receive.

Tom Carter, Head of St Christopher’s The Hall, discusses what makes the prep school the talk of the town

Ihave always believed there is something rather special about discovering a place that feels as though it has been designed just for you. Not shouted about. Not showy. Just quietly excellent. That is how many families come to see St Christopher’s The Hall: Beckenham’s best-kept secret.
Nestled in the heart of Beckenham, we do not always announce ourselves as a London prep school, yet in ambition, outlook and opportunity, that is exactly what we are. Our pupils benefit from the academic rigour, cultural breadth and high expectations associated with a London
education, alongside something increasingly rare: the warmth, familiarity and genuine connection of a close local community. This balance sits at the heart of everything we do.
We are proudly small, and deliberately so. It allows every child to be known, understood and championed. Education here is bespoke and responsive, rooted in the belief that excellence is not achieved by forcing children into a single mould, but by recognising who they are, how they learn and what they might become. This is what I mean when I talk about excellence differently. As a London prep school, we set the bar

high. Our pupils are encouraged to think independently, communicate confidently and engage deeply with their learning. Recent inspection outcomes reflect this clearly: children achieve highly because they are supported thoughtfully, challenged appropriately and taught exceptionally well. Character, curiosity and confidence are nurtured alongside academic success.
Our curriculum is intentionally forwardthinking. Strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge sit alongside a clear focus on the skills children will need in a rapidly changing world. Central to this is The Horizon Project, our distinctive weekly programme dedicated to leadership, collaboration, sustainability, problem-solving, creativity and self-awareness. These are not treated as optional extras, but as essential components of a modern education.
In an age dominated by screens and digital noise, I am also passionate about balance. Technology is embraced, but not allowed to eclipse childhood. Children learn to engage thoughtfully with the digital world while developing the human skills that matter just as much: resilience, empathy, independence, imagination and the ability to think deeply rather than react quickly. Childhood here is still tangible, energetic and connected to people, ideas and experiences beyond a device.
Our close relationship with St Dunstan’s Educational Group strengthens this further, providing continuity and aspiration as pupils prepare for senior school. It means families can

enjoy the intimacy of a small, caring prep school, while knowing their children are part of a wider, ambitious educational journey.
Yet for all of this strategy and structure, what defines St Christopher’s most powerfully is its atmosphere.
This is a school where families know one another. Where staff go the extra mile because they genuinely care. Where children feel safe enough to take risks, try new things and grow into themselves. Our Beckenham roots matter deeply to me. We are outward-looking in ambition, but grounded in community.
From the earliest years, children embark on a carefully designed journey through to Year 6. Learning is imaginative, purposeful and joyful, whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field or through the many enrichment opportunities that broaden horizons and build confidence.
Perhaps that is why I so often hear the same comment from new families: “We didn’t realise a school like this existed.”
A London prep school with heart.
A Beckenham school with ambition.
Quietly forward-thinking. Deeply personal.
St Christopher’s The Hall may be Beckenham’s best-kept secret, but for those who discover it, it quickly becomes something far more enduring: a community, a partnership, and a foundation for the future.
Find out more about St Christopher’s The Hall at an upcoming open morning.

Benenden School’s bold and imaginative approach to education has been formally recognised by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), which recently awarded the School a rare “significant strength” for its innovative non-examined curriculum.
This distinction is reserved for schools delivering something truly distinctive with a profound impact on pupils, and inspectors were unequivocal in their praise. In a report that rated Benenden highly across all areas, the ISI highlighted how the School’s curriculum goes far beyond excellent exam results, nurturing curiosity, confidence and skills for life.
At the heart of their approach is the belief that a Benenden education should prepare young women not just for exams, but shape future generations of successful, visionary women. Alongside GCSEs and A Levels, every student takes part in the School’s extensive Electives programme, offering more than 70 professional and general interest courses. From sign language and journalism to investments and meteorology, these electives allow girls to explore new interests and discover potential future pathways.
Younger students follow the CREATE Diploma in Years 7 and 8, an enquiry-based programme inspired by the World Economic Forum’s Fast Growing Skills for 2030. These skills, including creativity, collaboration and

critical thinking, are further developed in Year 9 through new courses such as Data Science, Soil to Supper, Business and Natural Sciences.
Inspectors noted that this carefully designed curriculum “substantially developed the academic curiosity shown by the pupils,” adding that through these non-examined courses, students gain self-confidence and practical skills that will serve them well into adulthood.
Headmistress Rachel Bailey has welcomed the findings, commenting: “At Benenden we pride ourselves on an innovative curriculum that ensures girls are not only achieving outstanding academic results, but developing a genuine love of learning that will stay with them for life.”
The report also praised Benenden’s strong pastoral care, ambitious teaching, extensive careers provision and leadership opportunities, alongside the seamless integration of day pupils into the boarding community. Inspectors highlighted a collaborative and aspirational culture in which students thrive academically, socially and personally.
Part of Benenden’s renowned “Complete Education” model, this personalised and forward-looking curriculum has helped place the School in the top 6% nationally for value-added progress. Set within 250 acres of Kent countryside, Benenden continues to be recognised as one of the world’s leading girls’ schools – and this latest inspection confirms why.

The 11+ provision at Junior King’s (for pupils aged 3–13) plays a key role in this journey, offering a smooth and carefully structured transition into Senior King’s while preserving the many advantages of a prep school education. This continuity is particularly valued by families seeking a clear and confident pathway from London and the South East into a leading independent school.
Joining Junior King’s in Year 7 gives children the opportunity to benefit from two additional years of prep school learning, where curiosity remains central, creativity is celebrated, and the freedom to explore is preserved. Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoy a broad and exciting curriculum supported by small class sizes, excellent facilities, and a strong pastoral system. Each pupil is known as an individual and guided in a way that helps them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

“New joiners at this stage bring fresh ideas, new friendships, and help ensure our community remains dynamic and diverse.”
Through places offered at 11+ allow families to plan with confidence. Pupils benefit from regular contact with the senior school through visits, shared events, and lessons delivered by Senior King’s staff. This familiarity helps build a strong sense of continuity and belonging, so that by the time pupils move on to Year 9, the transition feels natural and positive.
The curriculum, too, is closely aligned across both schools. Our Global Perspectives programme begins in Year 7 and continues through to Year 9, encouraging pupils to think critically, ask questions, and explore global themes - valuable preparation for the challenges of GCSEs, A Levels, and life beyond school.
While the 11+ pathway offers a strong and connected route through King’s, we are equally proud of our large and vibrant 13+ intake. New joiners at this stage bring fresh ideas, new friendships, and help ensure our community remains dynamic and diverse.
We would be delighted to welcome you to join us for one of our Open Mornings, held throughout the year at both Junior King’s and The King’s School Canterbury. Easily accessible from Central London and the surrounding regions, individual tours are also available by appointment.

NumberWorks’nWords individualised tuition builds confidence and boosts results

NumberWorks’nWords offers personalised tuition that builds confidence, strengthens core skills, and delivers measurable progress.
Maths and English remain the foundations of a child’s education, underpinning success across the wider curriculum. In today’s classrooms, where expectations are higher and learning gaps have widened in recent years, many children can struggle to keep up — particularly in larger class settings where individual support is limited.
For over 40 years, NumberWorks’nWords has supported children’s learning through specialist maths and English tuition, helping students of all abilities to either catch up, keep up, or get ahead. Whether a child needs targeted support to close gaps or greater challenge to extend their learning, programmes are tailored to meet their individual needs.
The success of NumberWorks’nWords lies in its combination of world-class learning software, highly trained tutors, and truly personalised tuition programmes. Every child begins with a comprehensive, individual assessment that identifies strengths, areas for development, and learning behaviours. Using this insight, tutors create a bespoke learning plan in partnership with parents, ensuring time is spent addressing what the child actually needs — not repeating what they already know.
Lessons combine one-to-one instruction with guided practice, allowing tutors to clearly explain new concepts while students consolidate their understanding through structured, computer-based

exercises. This balanced approach supports deep learning and helps children return to the classroom feeling more confident, capable, and independent.
At NumberWorks’nWords Bromley, children learn in a supportive and encouraging environment designed to rebuild confidence as well as skills. Many students who have fallen behind experience frustration or self-doubt; regular feedback, visible progress, and recognition of achievements help to develop a more positive mindset and renewed motivation for learning. NumberWorks’nWords now also operates a centre in Petts Wood, offering the same high-quality tuition and personalised approach for local families.
If you feel your child may be struggling with maths or English — or could benefit from additional challenge — a free, no-obligation assessment at NumberWorks’nWords is an excellent place to start.

In an era of one-click baskets and anonymous sizing charts, Harvey’s Menswear in Sevenoaks is a reminder that getting dressed well can still be a pleasure. Tucked neatly into the town centre, this independent menswear destination has quietly built a reputation for doing something deceptively simple: helping men look their best, properly.
Step inside Harvey’s and you immediately sense the difference. This is not fast fashion, nor is it intimidatingly formal. Instead, it strikes that rare balance between contemporary style and traditional tailoring values. The rails are thoughtfully curated, showcasing quality brands that prioritise fit, fabric and longevity over fleeting trends. Whether you’re looking for a sharply cut suit, a versatile jacket, or refined casualwear that works just as well on a weekend as it does at a smart-casual office, Harvey’s delivers.
What truly sets Harvey’s apart, however, is its service. Knowledgeable without being pushy, the team understands that menswear is personal. They take the time to listen, to suggest, and to guide—offering honest advice on fit, proportion and styling. It’s the kind of expertise that can’t be replicated online, and it’s invaluable whether you’re dressing for a wedding, a key business moment, or simply upgrading your everyday wardrobe. There’s also a reassuring sense of continuity here. Harvey’s feels rooted in Sevenoaks, serving generations of customers while evolving with them. The store respects classic menswear foundations but isn’t afraid to modernise— introducing contemporary cuts, fresh colours and updated silhouettes that keep things current without chasing trends for their own sake.
In a world where many high streets are losing their individuality, Harvey’s Menswear stands as a strong example of why independent retailers still matter. It offers quality over quantity, expertise over algorithms, and a genuinely enjoyable shopping experience.
For men who value style, substance and service in equal measure, Harvey’s isn’t just a shop—it’s a trusted partner in dressing well. Sevenoaks is lucky to have it, and so is anyone who believes that great menswear should feel as good as it looks.

For many of us, jewellery isn’t just something we wear, it’s something we carry with us on life’s journey. Pieces become markers of time: a celebration, a loss, a promise, a moment that shaped us. Eventually, those pieces can end up tucked away, no longer worn but far too meaningful to part with. That’s where the journey begins.
Walking into KATA Jewellery, I wasn’t looking for something new in the traditional sense. I was looking for understanding. I had jewellery that had lived a full life already, well worn, deeply sentimental, and I wanted it to continue its story in a way that felt right for me now.

From the very first conversation, it was clear this wasn’t about simply redesigning a piece. It was about listening. About honouring where the jewellery had come from and who it was connected to.

The process felt thoughtful and unhurried, guided by creativity and genuine care rather than trends or templates. Each decision, from form to finish, was considered, with a clear respect for the emotional weight the piece carried.

When the final ring was revealed, it was both familiar and entirely new. Beautifully modern, yet rich with meaning. The craftsmanship was exceptional, every detail refined, but what struck me most was how the piece felt. It wasn’t a replacement. It was an evolution. The next chapter in a story already decades in the making.
That’s the quiet power of bespoke and remodelling. A bespoke piece begins life already full of intention, created to mark a moment that matters. A remodelled piece isn’t reborn, it’s continued.
Jewellery moves with us through life’s highest highs and its most tender lows, linking us to people, memories, and moments that shape who we are.
What happens here goes far beyond what you’ll find off the shelf. This is about stewardship, being trusted with what matters most, and crafting jewellery that reflects not just beauty, but belonging. And when a piece returns to your hand, ready to be worn again, it carries something far more precious than its materials - a story that will continue long after us.

wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.
Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘
‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!
And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.
Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!
The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

Harley Street’s Dr Amina Adeniran, Founder of House of Rejuvenation™, invites us to reconsider an often-overlooked aspect of women’s health.

Most discerning women maintain a sophisticated regimen for their face - cleansers, serums, and collagen-stimulating treatments are viewed as proactive, essential investments. Yet, the most hormonally sensitive tissue in the female body is frequently neglected until discomfort or a loss of confidence becomes impossible to ignore.
The intimate area is an integrated system of skin, collagen, and nerve endings. Like the face, it is subject to the passage of time, childbirth, and hormonal shifts, gradually losing elasticity and structural support. While facial aging is openly discussed, intimate changes remain the final frontier of unspoken wellness.
Redefining Intimate Health
For generations, women were taught to normalise symptoms like dryness, reduced sensation, or structural shifts as inevitable milestones of midlife. They are not. Intimate wellness is not an indulgence of vanity; it is a pillar of functional health, confidence, and quality of life. When these tissues thrive, it reinforces a woman’s connection to her body and her relationships.
The 3-Zone Protocol™
At the House of Rejuvenation, my work focuses on breaking these taboos through discreet, doctor-led, non-surgical rejuvenation. Central to this is my trademarked 3-Zone Protocol™. This medical framework addresses the intimate area as a whole, supporting:
• External structural integrity
• Internal tissue vitality
• The vaginal opening and associated dryness and discomfort with intercourse
The objective is a holistic improvement in sensation and everyday wellbeing. This is not about cosmetic alteration, but the restoration of meaningful function.
Modern aesthetics has evolved from reactive correction to proactive maintenance. Intimate health deserves that same foresight. Early assessment and personalised medical support can ensure comfort long before symptoms become disruptive. If we invest in the skin the world sees, we must also care for the anatomy that carries us through our most resilient moments. What is the real cost of waiting, when intimate symptoms rarely remain static?
If you have noticed a shift and are seeking a bespoke clinical approach, discreet support is available. Intimate wellness begins with a sophisticated conversation and the reassurance of being taken seriously by a medical expert.
Prioritise your long-term vitality. Take our clinical suitability assessment (scan QR code opposite) to see how the 3-Zone Protocol can benefit you.

Deciding when to introduce homecare can feel overwhelming for families. Many people worry that asking for help means a loss of independence. In reality, homecare is often a proactive step that helps individuals stay safe, comfortable, and independent in their own homes for longer.
Here are five common signs that extra support may be beneficial.
1. Everyday Tasks Are Becoming Difficult
If washing, dressing, cooking, or household chores are being neglected or causing stress, extra support can help maintain dignity and wellbeing while preserving independence.
2. Falls or Mobility Concerns
Frequent falls, unsteadiness, or difficulty moving around the home can signal the need for additional support. A carer can assist with mobility and help reduce the risk of accidents.
3. Memory Changes or Confusion
Forgetting medication, missing appointments, or becoming disoriented can indicate cognitive decline. Dementia-trained carers can provide structured routines, reassurance, and specialist support.
4. Weight Loss or Poor Nutrition
Skipping meals, difficulty shopping, or unexplained weight loss may suggest a need for help with nutrition. Carers can assist with meal preparation and ensure regular, balanced meals.

“Many families tell us they wish they had reached out sooner. Early support often prevents crisis situations and helps loved ones stay safely at home for longer.”
5. Loneliness or Withdrawal
Reduced social interaction, low mood, or withdrawal from hobbies can be signs of loneliness. Companionship care can provide meaningful conversation, activities, and support to stay connected with the community.
Homecare does not mean giving up independence—it means gaining the right support at the right time. Early support can prevent hospital admissions, reduce stress for families, and significantly improve quality of life.

This month, KYN Bickley’s Home Manager, Daisy Slavkova, shares helpful guidance on who to inform when moving into a care home.

Preparing for a move into residential care can feel overwhelming, but good organisation can make the transition much smoother. Alongside telling friends and family, there are several organisations, authorities and service providers that need to be informed of your change in circumstances. You may also need to cancel or transfer subscriptions, utilities and services. KYN’s checklist below offers a useful starting point.
Healthcare professionals
Inform your GP of your new address and arrange a full medication review before moving. Bring a complete list of medications, including dosages, timings and any allergies, for the care team. At

“At KYN, we can register residents with a local GP and provide regular onsite GP visits to ensure continuity of care”
KYN, we can register residents with a local GP and provide regular on-site GP visits to ensure continuity of care. You should also notify other healthcare providers such as dentists, opticians, hospitals and specialist consultants.
Legal and financial matters
Before moving, ensure a Lasting Power of Attorney is in place for both health and welfare, and property and financial affairs. This allows trusted individuals to make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. Inform banks, building societies, credit card providers, pension companies, investment managers and accountants of your change of address. Insurance providers should also be updated, and it’s worth checking with the care home whether additional cover is needed for valuables.
Local authority and government departments
Notify your local council, as you may be eligible for financial support with care fees or qualify for council tax exemption if your property becomes unoccupied. Update your details on the electoral register to avoid penalties. You should also inform relevant benefits departments, including HMRC, the Pension Service and the Disability Service Centre, about your change in circumstances.
Utilities and everyday services
Cancel or transfer utility contracts such as gas, electricity, water, broadband, phone, TV services and licences. Don’t forget subscription services, clubs, online accounts, the DVLA and any regular home services such as gardeners or cleaners. Setting up a Royal Mail redirection can help ensure important post reaches you.
At KYN, our Concierge team can assist with practical details such as change-ofaddress cards, helping the move into care feel welcoming and well supported. For more information, please visit kyn.co.uk

– Keep it local for everything house and home –
With bathroom design specialists, Ripples.
Wellness is no longer confined to spas, retreats or dedicated fitness spaces. In 2026, it has firmly moved into the home and nowhere is this shift more evident than in the bathroom. Once viewed purely as a functional space, the bathroom is now being reimagined as a place for restoration, balance and everyday self-care. Here, Roan Kelly, owner of Ripples Tunbridge Wells, explains how thoughtful design can transform daily routines into meaningful moments of calm.
So, what does bathroom wellness look like in 2026? It’s not about gimmicks or indulgence for indulgence’s sake. Instead, it’s a careful layering of atmosphere, comfort, and intelligent design choices that turn everyday rituals into moments of restoration.
Light is one of the most powerful tools in a wellness-led bathroom. Natural daylight remains highly desirable, but where that isn’t possible, carefully planned artificial lighting can have a profound effect. Layered lighting, combining ambient glow, soft task lighting and subtle accent lighting, creates a soothing

environment and avoids the harsh, clinical feel traditionally associated with bathrooms. Warm, adjustable lighting allows the space to respond to different times of day and different moods.
Warmth and comfort are equally important. Features such as underfloor heating, warm surfaces and gentle ambient heat help the body relax, particularly in the colder months. These elements encourage you to linger rather than rush, shifting the bathroom from a purely functional space into one that feels nurturing and restorative.

Material choice also plays a key role in 2026’s wellness-focused bathrooms. Tactile, natural finishes are favoured over high-gloss surfaces, creating spaces that feel grounded and calm. Stone, softly textured tiles, wood-effect finishes and muted colour palettes all contribute to an atmosphere that feels reassuring rather than overstimulating.
Finally, wellness-led bathrooms prioritise clarity and calm. Considered layouts, well-proportioned fittings and concealed storage help keep surfaces clear and the space visually restful. A bathroom that feels organised and intentional has a direct impact on how relaxing it feels to use.

Yorkstone paving is formed from a combination of minerals found within Yorkshire, including quartz, mica, clay and iron oxide. This mineral makeup produces a broad range of natural colours, from warm sandy hues to cool greys with subtle silver and blue undertones. Its durability and versatility have made it a long-standing favourite, particularly for high-traffic commercial environments where performance is as important as appearance.
The term “York stone” is a generic name applied to all stone quarried in the York region. It is defined by its fine, tightly packed grain structure, creating a dense, hard-wearing paving material ideally suited for exterior use.
New sawn Yorkstone has a clean, lively appearance with a slightly sparkly surface that brings character to each slab. It works equally well in traditional or contemporary schemes and is best pointed using an exterior tile grout with a narrow 3mm joint, rather than traditional sand and cement. Reclaimed Yorkstone, however, is never pristine. It often arrives with surface imperfections, remnants of old fixings and inconsistent thickness, as it is not calibrated. This type of stone is best laid randomly using a conventional cement mortar. Having been naturally smoothed by decades of foot traffic, reclaimed Yorkstone can
become slippery when wet, but it adds immediate character and history and pairs particularly well with reclaimed bricks or granite cobbles.
Other premium natural stones, such as granite, limestone and basalt, are often slippery when wet and usually require textured finishes such as sandblasting or bush hammering to improve grip. While effective, these processes leave a matt finish that can appear muted, making these stones ideal for use as borders or detailing alongside brighter slabs. Many of the most attractive grey and cream options are found within the limestone range, though all must be approved for external use.
All paving materials will naturally weather and discolour over time, helping them blend into their surroundings. Algae growth is common, and specialist cleaning products are available, though advice should always be sought from the stone supplier, as natural stone reacts differently to cleaning agents.
At Pennine Paving, we pride ourselves on over 30 years of experience supplying and working with Yorkstone and a wide range of other paving materials, including Indian, Chinese, porcelain and travertine. We also stock building stone, slates, coping and more. Browse our website to find the right stone for your next project.

The unique shapes and patterns provided by the natural world are the building blocks of furniture favourites found in every home. Fibres become our fabrics, sand becomes our glass, and most importantly (to me, dear reader) the myriad of marbles and timbers form our tables, big and small. Is there anything more beautiful than a table topped with intricately veined Calacatta, or the rich grain of an oak surface? But how do you choose between the two? Both are embodiments of design majesty, albeit for very different reasons.
What belongs where – and why does it belong there? What are the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between these material giants? Welcome to a heavyweight title fight: Wood vs Marble.
The big picture: Marble is synonymous with opulence. The palaces of antiquity were shaped by it, and modern spaces are not so different. Today, however, the material is used more internally than externally. It can be used to create truly unique, one-of-a-kind tables, with veins that can be traced through a seemingly indestructible surface; a

kind of liquidity within the absolute. Meanwhile its wide variation of earthy finishes makes it a natural choice for countless settings: a master of standing out while fitting in. Marble is surprisingly versatile... for a rock.
On the other side, wood tables are the original. Picture Goldilocks and her porridge. Medieval dining halls. One thing in common: wood. Their desirability comes from natural warmth, the soothing patterns of the grain, and the familiarity of a timber dining table – something many of us grew up with at home.
Look and feel: The physical texture of both materials is solid, strong and supportive. Wood with its subtle, story-telling imperfections and natural tactility brings an instant sense of comfort to a room. Marble by contrast is cool to the touch not just to the eye.
It’s what these materials evoke that truly sets them apart. Wood’s organic character offers a welcoming charm as you enter a space, as if inviting you to take a seat at the table or set down your Earl Grey. Marble, on the other hand, is sleek and dynamic, perfectly suited to moments that call for something a little more eye-catching.

Durability: “Solid as a rock,” as the old saying

goes, marble is one of nature’s most durable materials. Highly resistant to temperature changes and capable of withstanding a significant amount of force, standing strong against the thrills and spills of a busy household – unless, of course, you’re holding a glass of wine. Depending on whether it has been pre-sealed, marble is incredibly porous, readily absorbing certain liquids that can leave rings or stains. Coasters, therefore, are an absolute must when entertaining. Or drinking alone. We don’t judge.
Wood, while lacking the innate strength of marble, is far more forgiving if something does go wrong. Scratches and chips are considerably easier to repair and for many the natural wear and tear of everyday use develops something that looks better nowhere else than on timber: character.

to tree replacement or CO2 reduction, and manufacturers that provide aftercare guidance to extend the lifespan of each piece. Brands such as Gubi and Audo are excellent examples of these principles in practice.

Ethical Consumption: As with the manufacture and transportation of anything in the modern world, both marble and wood come with environmental drawbacks. Because both are naturally occurring commodities, we have to look a little deeper than usual. Marble is generally less ecologically impactful to manufacture, but it is non-renewable and—unlike trees—cannot be regrown (not unless you’re prepared to wait a few eons). As such, it must be cared for with absolute diligence to ensure longevity.
Wood, while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential.
The answer? Shop brands with clearly defined eco-policies – those that make a genuine, vested effort to leave the planet better for having been part of their process. Look for commitments
Maintenance: One of the more closely matched categories in this comparison: both materials require a certain level of TLC. To maintain the prestigious look they offer, it’s best to use pH-neutral cleaners that won’t damage delicate surfaces. As mentioned previously, sealed marble provides far greater protection from the thrills and spills of a busy household, however, care is more about prevention than cure. Coasters and mats are an essential accessory.
Wood, on the other hand, is more forgiving. Surface-level scratches can be sanded out, a leg can be replaced, and a fresh layer of finish can be applied breathing new life into what may one day be considered a family heirloom. We’d also recommend a weekly wipe-down and limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for certain timbers, helping to prevent bleaching over time. chaplins.co.uk
“Wood,
while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential”

In an age where interiors are expected to work harder than ever, the bathroom has quietly evolved from a purely functional space into one of the most expressive rooms in the home. Few companies understand this shift better than H Lilley Bathrooms, a name that has become synonymous with thoughtful design, enduring quality, and a refreshingly personal approach to bathroom creation. What sets H Lilley Bathrooms apart is its unwavering commitment to craftsmanship. Every project begins with a clear understanding that no two homes—or homeowners—are the same. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, the team focuses on creating bathrooms that reflect individual lifestyles, tastes, and practical needs. The result is a portfolio that feels both cohesive and impressively diverse,

ranging from sleek, contemporary sanctuaries to timeless, character-rich spaces.
Design, however, is only part of the story. H Lilley Bathrooms places equal emphasis on materials and execution, ensuring that each installation stands the test of time. Carefully sourced fixtures, precision fitting, and attention to the smallest details combine to deliver bathrooms that feel as good years later as they do on day one. It’s this balance of aesthetics and longevity that has earned the brand a loyal following. Equally notable is the customer experience. Renovating a bathroom can be disruptive and daunting, but H Lilley Bathrooms has built its reputation on making the process seamless. Clear communication, expert guidance, and a genuine respect for clients’ homes help transform what can be a stressful undertaking into a collaborative and enjoyable journey.
In a market crowded with fleeting trends and fast solutions, H Lilley Bathrooms stands firm in its belief that good design should be both beautiful and practical. Its work speaks to a quieter kind of luxury—one rooted in comfort, confidence, and care. For homeowners seeking more than just a new bathroom, but a space that enhances daily life, H Lilley Bathrooms continues to prove that thoughtful design is always in style.
If you are looking for more inspiration to create that tranquil bathroom space, you’ll find plenty of superb design ideas for small bathrooms (and even large ones) at our Eltham and Biggin Hill showrooms.

Shabby, sticking doors with loose or unreliable locks can take the shine off your day. There’s no need to live with it when it can be sorted simply.
Fineline customer Mr McEvoy found this after one supplier let him down. “The supplier I’d been speaking to admitted they couldn’t fit a door as I was out of their area.”
Fineline focuses on quality and choice across doors, windows, conservatories and extensions. “The quality of the best doors is very high,” says Peter Wheeler, “and the customisation can meet exacting demands.”
If you haven’t visited a showroom recently, you may not realise how far doors have come. Old timber doors, often stuck in place by years of paint, can be replaced easily with modern alternatives. Energy performance and security are far higher, improving comfort while lifting your home.

Mr McEvoy chose a Palladio door for its locking system and guarantee. Finished in a very dark RAL green, it proved more attractive and secure than a standard timber replacement.
Fineline understands that quality products need matching service. Mr McEvoy found the process efficient and well organised. Ordering, surveying and installation were handled smoothly, even while he was away. “Overall, it was efficient from start to finish.”
Fineline applies the same care to every project, from a single door to full-home glazing or extensions, delivering consistent results across projects of all sizes..
