Christmas at Bedgebury returns for 2025 with a dazzling array of new installations, returning favourites and a centenary celebration set to make this year’s trail the most memorable yet.
Marking 100 years of the world-famous Forestry England Bedgebury National Pinetum, the illuminated trail will offer a truly festive experience for all ages.
In keeping with the venue’s outdoor lifestyle ethos, families, including those with dogs, can explore together in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Among the new never-before-seen features are 20 illuminated tree stars, reaching up to five metres high, and Light as a Feather 12 ethereal UV-lit feathers suspended in the treetops.
Visitors will be drawn through Light Lines, a striking new artwork made up of 200 glowing onemetre light battens.
Handcrafted over many hours, six intricate dragonfly lanterns by artist Martha Ellis will take flight above the trail, while Tis The Season by Output Arts will scale up the delicate charm of traditional Christmas baubles into dazzling installations up to 90cm high, adorning the tallest trees on site.
A series of seven bauble arches will form an enchanting Christmas Tree Walk Through.
A breathtaking 36-metre Christmas Cathedral will create a soaring tunnel of light, while 150 floating candles by Pitaya will appear to hover magically in the dark.
The ever-popular fountain show will return bigger than ever, and visitors can also look forward to the return of the Bubble Walk, a perennial favourite that never fails to delight younger visitors.
In addition to the new displays, this year’s trail will also pay tribute to Bedgebury’s living history, with some of the site’s remarkable centenary trees illuminated as part of the display. Of the 315 trees planted in 1925 to mark the formation of the Forestry England Bedgebury National Pinetum, 89 remain today. Each tree bears a distinctive yellow label, allowing visitors to easily identify these giants of the collection as they explore the glowing landscape.
Christmas at Bedgebury is produced by Sony Music in partnership with Forestry England. Alongside its headline installations, the trail will feature festive food and drink stalls, warming visitors with seasonal treats as they explore.

Celebrate Christmas with Churchill’s animals at Chartwell. Get into the drama of a Georgian Christmas at Quebec House and embrace natural beauty at Emmetts Garden.
Immerse yourself in the Christmas atmosphere at the much-loved family home and gardens of Sir Winston Churchill. This year’s decorative theme is inspired by Churchill’s love for animals. As you explore the house, look out for delicate butterflies like those he raised and released in the gardens and fish like those he fed in the ponds. Head to the Drawing Room to discover a threequarters-life-sized racehorse sculpted by Charles Elliott. He created the bespoke, limited-edition piece in honour of Sir Winston Churchill and has generously loaned it to Chartwell for the Christmas season. Named ‘Colonist II’ after Churchill’s first and most successful racehorse purchased in 1949, it’s sure to have visitors racing to visit (open to 4 January).

And speaking of Churchill’s favourite animals, don’t forget Jock, the marmalade cat. This Christmas, the whole family can join Jock on an outdoor adventure. With everything snowed under and the Churchills stuck in London, it’s up to Jock, his animal friends (and you) to save Christmas!
Purchase a trail sheet from the visitor centre and take part in fun activities. Help the animals decorate trees, make music, prepare Christmas dinner and more. Collect the stamps on your trail sheet then pick up your prize once you’ve completed your mission. Christmas carols performed by local bands and choirs add to the merriment at Chartwell. Sing along or sip hot drinks and nibble festive snacks from the refreshments stall (selected dates).
Winter is also a wonderful time to explore the gardens and grounds. Go for an estate walk to take in the beautiful views then stop by the café and shop to warm up with treats and presents!
Just down the road from Chartwell is Quebec House in Westerham, the charming childhood home of General James Wolfe. On weekends to 21 December, you can step back in time for an 18th century trip to the opera.
Enjoy miniature and life-sized scenes inspired by Georgian-era entertainment. Soundscapes, clever lighting and the artistry of the National Trust’s talented volunteer crafters create a sense of performance. Mouth-watering scents waft through the house as you delight in the displays. Step across the garden to the Coach House to sample tasty treats prepared by the volunteer cooks (free to taste, donations appreciated).
You don’t need to wait until Boxing Day to head out on a winter walk. Combine Christmas season festivities at Quebec House or Chartwell with a garden stroll or woodland ramble. Chartwell may have its own gardens and estate walks, but nearby Emmetts Garden is a joy of its own.
On clear days you can see for miles, while misty meadow moments have their own charm. Christmas trees may demand attention this time of year, but Emmetts Garden is home to impressively undecorated evergreens including giant sequoias and blue atlas cedar. Inspire the kids to come along for a winter wander with the help of a free activity sheet (donations appreciated) and the wild play area. Exploring done, treat yourself to drinks and snacks from the National Trust refreshments van then browse the shop for gifts and souvenirs.
After the holidays, it’s not long before snowdrops begin popping up at Emmetts Garden, a prelude to spectacular spring flowers.

“With so much history, beauty and nature to explore this winter and enjoy all year, why not add National Trust membership to your Christmas wish list?”

gardens at Chartwell stay open in winter, but you’ll need to wait until February to find out the results of the ‘Inspired by Chartwell’ competition. Discover which paintings won the distinction of being displayed in the studio along with Churchill’s own artwork. The house at Chartwell reopens at the end of February, bringing another chance to see the recently restored Uniform Room and the ‘Churchill: Image and Power’ exhibition featuring his iconic uniforms and enviable siren suit.
Quebec House welcomes visitors back at the end of March to discover more about 18th century life and the story of General James Wolfe. In the meantime, you can follow Quebec House on social media for behind-the-scenes conservation and more.

For over two decades, Kent-based artist Iaysha has created paintings that explore the relationship between stillness, light and the unseen. Her work bridges contemporary abstraction with an intuitive sense of harmony — art that feels both modern and enduring.
Each piece unfolds over time through subtle layers of colour and texture, creating a sense of calm that draws the viewer in. There is rhythm in her markmaking and a quiet depth in her palette — a visual language that invites contemplation rather than noise. “I begin each canvas in a moment of quiet observation, letting intuition and listening guide each layer,” Iaysha shares.
“It’s a dialogue between me, the painting, and the space it will inhabit.”
Rooted in the idea that art carries energy, Iaysha’s paintings act as spaces for reflection, where colour, texture, and form open a gentle dialogue with the viewer. Her works are found in private and corporate collections and have been commissioned for hotels, wellness spaces, and contemporary interiors that value art as an integral part of a living environment.
Her practice combines a modern aesthetic with a deeply personal philosophy: that painting can

“I
begin each canvas in a moment of quiet observation, letting intuition and listening guide each layer”
restore a sense of connection in an often-distracted world. Each canvas evolves organically, balancing precision with spontaneity, structure with light.
Iaysha also works closely with private collectors seeking bespoke pieces that bring character and emotional depth to their interiors. Whether selecting an original, commissioning a new work, or choosing from her collection of fine art prints, each piece is intended to endure — offering resonance, refinement, and timeless appeal. Her collaborations with interior designers, yoga and wellness studios, and contemporary businesses extend this ethos into the everyday—where art meets life with quiet purpose and heartfelt meaning.
Art offered as a gift holds something lasting — a sense of care, beauty, and intention that continues to unfold over time.
Iaysha welcomes commissions and studio visits by appointment.

Canterbury’s Christmas Market runs until 24th December 2025. Find out more at canterbury-cathedral.org/christmas

• Did you know? Canterbury Cathedral’s festive market ran from 1383 until 1813 when, following concerns of ‘indecency and tumultuous conduct’, it closed for the final time.
• It takes more than 6 miles of twinkling festive lights, and over 118,000 LEDs, to decorate Canterbury’s medieval streets and buildings at Christmas.
• Christmas has always been hugely important in Canterbury. When the Puritans banned Christmas in 1647, the people of the city rebelled, and a Christmas Day game of football descended into full-blown rioting. Ultimately, the city’s Plum Pudding Riots, as they came to be known, led to a revolt by Royalists across Kent and the second round of the English Civil War.

By David Braithwaite, BBC Radio Kent’s Money Mentor and Managing Director of Citrus Financial
When you’re building a life together, money can be one of the trickiest things to get right.
In my experience, couples often fall into the same traps, not out of carelessness, but simply because they didn’t know what to look out for.
Here are five mistakes I see all too often, and how to avoid them:
1. Not talking about money
One partner often handles the finances while the other stays in the dark. But if something unexpected happens, that lack of knowledge can leave one person vulnerable. It’s vital to have open conversations, and ideally, attend financial meetings together.
2. Only linking your current accounts
Most couples open a joint account and leave it there. But linking investments or reviewing shared protection policies can lower costs and improve cover, while still keeping things private where needed.
3. Holding assets in the wrong name
If one partner pays more tax than the other, it might make sense to hold savings or investments in the lower earner’s name. This simple change could reduce your overall tax bill and boost your returns.
4. Protecting just one partner
Many people only take out life cover on the main earner. But if the other partner were unable to care for the children, who would step in, and how would that be funded? Both lives should be protected, no matter the income.

5. Missing inheritance tax allowances
Married couples and civil partners can combine allowances to pass on up to £1 million free of inheritance tax. But you’ll need the right structure in place to benefit.
Getting expert advice early on can make a world of difference, and might just save you a small fortune down the line.

‘I do’ or ‘Let’s move in’? Whatever your festive plans, don’t let legal surprises spoil the romance. Maria James, partner and family law specialist at Thomas Dunton Solicitors LLP, shares what every couple needs to know about cohabitation and prenups before taking your relationship to the next level.
As modern relationships evolve, more couples are choosing to live together without marrying, while others are considering prenuptial agreements before tying the knot. Both choices carry significant legal implications that can affect property rights, financial security, and future planning. Understanding these issues is essential for protecting yourself and your loved ones.
Cohabitation in the UK
Cohabiting couples are the fastest-growing family type in Britain, yet the law offers them very limited protection. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as “common law marriage” in the UK. Living together—even for decades or having children—does not grant the same rights as marriage or civil partnership. Couples can, however, create a cohabitation agreement, which sets out how you wish your assets to be divided if you separate in the future, or if your partner dies or becomes seriously ill. While not mandatory, these agreements provide clarity and can prevent costly disputes later.
Prenuptial Agreements (“Prenups”)
For couples planning to marry, a prenup offers peace of mind. In the UK, prenups are not automatically legally binding, but courts increasingly uphold them if they meet certain conditions.
Prenups are particularly useful for protecting inherited wealth, family businesses, or children from previous relationships.
Marriage vs. Cohabitation
Marriage offers automatic rights that cohabitation does not, including:
• Inheritance under intestacy laws
• Pension sharing
• Financial claims on divorce
Cohabiting couples must take proactive steps—such as drafting agreements and making wills—to secure similar protections.
How can Thomas Dunton can help?

In the heart of Petts Wood, House of Hounds has earned its reputation as a warm, stylish, and thoughtfully curated haven for local dog lovers. While known year-round for its deluxe grooming services and boutique selection of canine essentials, it’s at Christmas that this beloved independent shop truly comes into its own. Step through the door in December and you’re greeted by the comforting scent of natural treats, twinkling festive décor, and an unmistakable sense of cheer — all centred around our four-legged family members. What sets House of Hounds apart is its dedication to quality. The team is passionate about providing dogs with treats that are as wholesome as they are delicious. Their Christmas range is no exception: every product is carefully selected, favouring natural ingredients, grain-free recipes, and artisanal producers over mass-market novelty items. The result is a festive offering that lets pet owners indulge their dogs without compromise.
This year’s seasonal selection features beautifully packaged biscuits, meaty holiday chews, and themed nibbles that manage to be both fun and nutritious. Whether your companion prefers something crunchy, chewy, or gently baked, you’ll find a treat that feels special enough for Christmas

Staffed by passionate dog enthusiasts, the shop offers warm, personal guidance on choosing treats and presents tailored to each dog’s needs. Head of St Christopher’s The Hall, Tom Carter, explains more about the forward-thinking programme and why it’s so important.
This year at St Christopher’s The Hall, we launched a new initiative that is already making a powerful difference to our pupils, The Horizon Programme. It was created in response to something teachers and parents are noticing everywhere: children are growing up in an increasingly digital world, and many of the practical skills, social habits and deeper patterns of thinking that once developed naturally are becoming less familiar. The Horizon Programme is our way of bringing those essential experiences back into daily school life.

We see bright, capable children who can access information instantly, yet sometimes hesitate when faced with open-ended problems. Many find it challenging to maintain focus in a world full of digital distractions, and collaborative, faceto-face work can require more practice than it once did. Opportunities to build, create, explore and persevere, cornerstones of childhood, are becoming less frequent in a screen-led culture. Horizon responds to this directly. Each week, pupils in Years 1–6 take part in purposeful, hands-on sessions built around four pillars: Character, Leadership, Sustainability and Life
Skills. These experiences help children rediscover the joy of working together, thinking deeply and developing the real-world confidence that cannot be learned through a screen.
The early impact has been remarkable. Pupils talk about Horizon sessions with genuine excitement. Teachers are observing stronger teamwork, improved perseverance and calmer, more intentional engagement. The programme has brought a renewed sense of curiosity, creativity and focus into the school week.
Already, pupils have explored themes such as sustainability, embracing practical challenges with maturity and ownership, a clear reminder of how much children flourish when given meaningful, real-world tasks. They have also taken part in activities designed to strengthen focus, practising how to slow down, tune out distractions and enjoy the satisfaction of deep, uninterrupted attention. These examples confirm that the skills we hoped to nurture were exactly the ones our pupils needed most.

“As the year continues, we will move into a range of practical Life Skills, the small but important tasks children once
learned
naturally but do not always encounter today”

And these are only the beginning. As the year continues, we will move into a range of practical Life Skills, the small but important tasks children once learned naturally but do not always encounter today. Pupils will learn how to change a bed, tie a tie, make a cup of tea safely, use simple tools, read basic instructions, plan a small budget, and even sew on a button. These may seem modest, yet they foster independence, confidence and a quiet sense of capability that stays with children for life. Parents often say, “I wish someone had taught me these things at school.”
Now, we are.
What makes The Horizon Project so powerful is both its warmth and its purpose. It gives children the time and space to try, to get stuck, to recover, to succeed, and to discover that each of these steps is valuable. It nurtures resilience without pressure, responsibility without stress and curiosity without fear. It restores the grounding, practical roots of childhood that can so easily be overshadowed in a fast, high-tech world.
The Horizon Project is far more than a new initiative; it is a thoughtful response to the way childhood is changing. We are proud of its early impact and excited for everything still to come. By giving pupils structured opportunities to build real-world skills and essential habits of mind, the Horizon Programme is helping children grow into confident, capable young people who are ready not just for their next step, but for life.

St Dunstan’s College is delighted to announce that it has been named Most Progressive Independent School in south-east England at LUXLife Magazine’s Private Education Awards 2025, marking the third consecutive year the College has received this prestigious accolade.
This distinguished awards programme is dedicated to celebrating excellence in the private education sector, recognising the institutions, educators, and organisations that are shaping the future of learning with innovation, dedication, and outstanding achievements.
Speaking about the news, Head of Senior School, Jade McLellan, said: ‘Being named the Most Progressive Independent School in southeast England for the third consecutive year is a powerful endorsement of who we are and what we stand for as a community. At St Dunstan’s we are unapologetically ambitious for our young people, not only in their academic outcomes, but in the kind of individuals they become.
‘This award reflects our commitment to innovation in the classroom, a culture of integrity and kindness, and an environment where every student is encouraged to think independently and be themselves. I am immensely proud of our students and staff, whose curiosity, creativity and hard work make recognition like this possible.’

“I am immensely proud of our students and staff, whose curiosity, creativity and hard work make recognition like this possible.”
Last autumn, St Dunstan’s become one of the first schools in the country to receive two significant strengths as part of its ISI inspection. The report praised the broad and varied curriculums on offer to students at St Dunstan’s, explaining: ‘Leaders have put in place an ambitious, timetabled curriculum which provides extensive opportunities for pupils to acquire the broadest of learning experiences. Leaders have taken great care in the design of this multi-faceted programme which is included as part of the school day.

‘There are four separate strands; together these provide the full range of curriculum subjects, an extensive offering of broader learning experiences, a programme of teaching skills for the future and one that focuses on building pupils’ wellbeing and self-awareness. The breadth and relevance of this curriculum and leaders’ decision that all pupils participate in these opportunities, is a significant strength.’
The second ‘significant strength’ applauded the school’s dedication to celebrating diversity within the school.
“The breadth and relevance of this curriculum and leaders’ decision that all pupils participate in these opportunities, is a significant strength.”

‘The school’s ethos supports leaders in creating a strong community where diversity is celebrated,’ the report found. ‘This works through many facets of school life: through the curriculum, through the varied groups in school, led by pupils which celebrate diversity, and through producing events such as the annual St Dunstan’s festival. All these promote respect and understanding among the pupils for everyone in their own school and in the wider local community. This is a significant strength of the school.’
St Dunstan’s won Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards in 2022. The College’s sport department was also praised for its Diversity and Inclusion efforts at the Education Choices Awards 2024 and 2025.

“As Head of Hazelwood School, I’m committed to the formative years of education. These early years shape not only what children know but who they become. At Hazelwood, our mission goes beyond academic excellence; we nurture the whole child, focusing on empathy, adaptability, collaboration, creativity and curiosity. In a changing world, children need knowledge alongside essential human skills—listening, problem-solving, and applying learning creatively in ways that connect with others.
Hazelwood is a coeducational Nursery and Prep School for children aged 9 months to 13 years, set in 25 acres of woodland on the Surrey-Kent border. We pride ourselves on offering a dynamic curriculum, outstanding facilities, and a forward-thinking approach to teaching. Above all, we place children’s wellbeing and growth at the heart of every decision, ensuring that education remains a personal and meaningful journey.
A recent innovation is our Flexible Classroom scheme. First trialled on a small scale, it has transformed the learning environment school-wide. Children now choose how they learn best—comfy seating, floor seating, standing desks, or quiet zones. Dedicated areas for independence, one-to-one

support, or group collaboration reflect our belief that learning should adapt to the individual. This approach fosters ownership, engagement, and confidence. We’ve seen children thrive on wobble stools, lap desks, or standing desks—because they feel empowered to take charge of their learning.
We have also opened our Upper School Learning Centre for Years 7&8. Designed to encourage collaboration and independence, it feels more like a creative workspace than a traditional classroom. The space celebrates pupils’ voices and ideas, empowering them to take responsibility for their learning and develop skills that extend beyond academics.
The relocation of our Reception classes to the main Wolf’s Hill site has also been transformative. Our youngest children are now fully integrated into the school community, enjoying new play spaces including an all-weather awning, sandpit, and dedicated Forest School area. Here, relationships are nurtured alongside curiosity, helping 4- and 5-yearolds grow in joy, confidence, and belonging.
Wellbeing underpins everything we do. Our Wellbeing Hub, launched last year, provides a safe and caring space for children needing calm, reassurance, or extra help. Happy children learn best, and by prioritising relationships and support, we ensure each child feels seen and valued.
Hazelwood remains committed to innovation, excellence, and empowering every child to grow, explore, and flourish.”

As Christmas draws its soft, frosty veil over the Kent countryside, the Rose & Crown in Pluckley becomes more than just a pub—it transforms into a glowing hearth at the heart of a timeless winter tale.
Picture stepping through the door of the 17th-century building, its warm tile-hung walls framed by softly glowing lanterns and being greeted by the gentle crackle of the open fire. Here, the old wooden beams and low ceilings feel especially cozy under the soft light of fairy lights on each table, creating a sense of intimacy and calm that feels like stepping into a Christmas card come to life.

Under the stewardship of Dermot and Lisa Nally, the Rose & Crown has always been known for its warm, friendly welcome. In the festive season, that hospitality takes on a richer hue: families gather around hearty, seasonal dishes—seasonal roasts, warming puddings, comfort food drawn from local produce, all served with care. And while the pub doesn’t advertise a huge commercial “party night” schedule, its very soul feels suited to thoughtful, relaxed festive gatherings rather than raucous festive excess.
Outside, the Rose & Crown’s garden might lie quiet beneath bare branches or even a dusting of frost, but indoors the atmosphere hums with life. The bar, offering regular Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter and many guest ales, to suit the seasons, becomes a home for old friends and new to exchange stories, laughter, and perhaps even whispered local ghost-lore. After all, Pluckley is famed for being one of England’s most haunted villages, and there’s something deliciously fitting about leaning into festive warmth in a place that just might welcome a spectral visitor or two.
This Christmas, the Rose & Crown feels like a reminder of what matters most: community, kindness, and the simple joy of warmth in a cold season. It stands not as a flashy event venue, but as a place where people slow down, share a drink, and find comfort. And perhaps, as the winter wind sighs outside, there’s room for a little magic — the kind that doesn’t need ghosts or grand decorations to feel like a miracle.

In the butchery world, Carnivore stands out as a beacon of quality and tradition. Founded by Richard, a passionate butcher who views his trade as a craft, Carnivore has built its reputation on respect for the animal, the farmer, and customer. This respect forms the foundation of a butcher’s shop that prides itself on skill, tradition, and exceptional service.
From the very beginning, Carnivore aimed to raise the standards of butchery. By partnering with small local farms that specialise in native breeds and uphold the highest levels of animal welfare, Carnivore ensures that the meat they offer is of unparalleled flavour and consistency. This commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed, earning Carnivore over a hundred awards, including the prestigious title of Nation’s Best Traditional Sausage in 2024.
Carnivore is more than just a business; it’s a family endeavour. Richard’s nephew, Ryan, runs the Sidcup branch, infusing the shop with fresh ideas and energy. Ryan’s innovative approach has introduced creative marinades, continental-style products, and bold twists on classic cuts. While Ryan drives innovation, Richard remains dedicated to the craft, ensuring that every cut is prepared with the care and precision that define a true butcher.
Richard’s dedication extends beyond the shop. He has served the wider industry through his roles on the executive council for both the London Retailer Meat Traders Association and The National Craft Butchers. His tenure as London president for five years and newly appointed two-year role as national president of The National Craft Butchers

have deepened his belief that butchery is not just a profession but an art worth protecting.
The heart of Carnivore’s success is its motto: “Rare quality, well-done service.” This philosophy is reflected in every interaction with customers, whether it’s recommending the perfect cut for a family meal or delivering to vulnerable members of the community. Service is at the core of what Carnivore does.
Carnivore is more than a butcher’s shop. It’s the culmination of years of learning, family values, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. For those who believe that food should be both honest and exceptional, Carnivore delivers exactly that.

Harley Street’s Dr Amina Adeniran, Founder of House of Rejuvenation®, speaks candidly about one of the last remaining taboos in women’s health - intimate ageing - and why some of the most accomplished women are now seeking quiet, doctor-led solutions.
There comes a moment when even the most confident women sense that something has shifted within their intimate wellbeing. Not a loss of youth, but a change in ease, moisture, structure, or comfort. The kind of change often whispered, concealed beneath leadership roles, immaculate presentation, and demanding lives. This awareness is not vanity; it is self-respect.
Within my Harley Street practice and private Bromley clinic, I have created a sanctuary where intimate wellness is approached with elegance, medical precision, and absolute discretion. Intimate changes from childbirth, weight fluctuations, weight-loss drugs like Mounjaro, and hormonal transitions in pregnancy or menopause affect over 80% of women. Yet more than half endure symptoms for over three years before seeking help. Dryness, discomfort, loss of tone, pain with intimacy, and recurrent infections are not minor inconveniences - they shape confidence, relationships, and daily life.

My own journey through illness and recovery - after being treated for a brain tumour during pregnancy- reshaped how I understand womanhood and bodily change. It taught me that intimacy is not merely physical; it is emotional, hormonal, and deeply personal. My clinical approach is stage-wise, addressing
each anatomical layer with intention. From the entrance of the vagina to the delicate vulval folds, we restore hydration, elasticity, contour, and comfort using licensed regenerative treatments. To support women at different stages of life, I

Now imagine stepping into next month with renewed ease. Walking, exercising, dressing, and being intimate without discomfort. Then consider the cost of inaction: another year spent adjusting your life around symptoms that are entirely treatable.

Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.
wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.
Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘
‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!
And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.
Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!
The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

Building confidence through swimming at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre

Local families are discovering the life-changing benefits of professional swimming lessons at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre, with a pioneering programme transforming children’s confidence and physical skills. Everyone Active, which operates Sevenoaks Leisure Centre in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, has established itself as more than just a swimming school – it’s become a cornerstone of community fitness and youth development.
Long-term success stories are emerging from the programme. Adam Jaworski, a local parent, credits the centre’s approach for his son Shane’s remarkable journey. “From his first lessons at just 4 years old, Shane developed a genuine love for swimming,” Jaworski explained. “Now 18, his water confidence and technique are a direct result of the centre’s professional coaching.”
Sue Moore-Fay, another local parent, highlights the social benefits. “Beyond technique, the lessons have given my daughter Vivian a chance to build stamina and make friends outside her school circle,” she said.

“We are a small, loyal team that put our swimmers first,” says Mark Horne, Swimming Coach and Swim Manager at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. “This allows us to not only know all the children by first name, but also the parents, achieving a family-first approach. It’s completely natural for parents to be nervous for their child to begin swimming lessons but, as not all children learn at the same rate, we adapt our lessons as needed for each child, suggesting one to one sessions if needed.
“Swimming is not only a great form of low impact sport for people with a wide range of conditions, but is one of the most important life skills we can teach children - not only as a very inclusive sport, but as a safety skill which will stay with them for life.”.

Finding a care home for a loved one is one of the hardest decisions a family can make - often with significant financial implications. We hope that once they’ve settled in, they’ll receive the compassion, attention, and professional care they deserve. Yet key elements of care can still go unnoticed - not always out of neglect (though headlines remind us this still happens), but often because staff are overstretched. Sadly, carers remain underpaid and undervalued, regardless of how luxurious a care setting may appear.
At Local Care Adviser, we offer a Monthly Care Monitoring Service - a simple, accessible way to provide peace of mind through gentle, regular oversight. Each visit includes a short wellbeing summary highlighting key observations, concerns, and recommended actions, offering reassurance and continuity for families near or far. It’s a lighttouch alternative to our nurse-led care monitoring service, designed for more complex cases and to support Court of Protection–appointed deputies in fulfilling their duties.

Local Care Adviser founder Roberta Svile
“We’re here to help them carry out their duty with confidence and compassion”

Monthly Care Monitoring is especially valuable for families living abroad, distant relatives, and professional attorneys seeking reassurance that those they represent are truly being cared for. We work alongside care homes to safeguard individuals who may no longer have a voice, ensuring they receive care delivered with dignity and compassion. “Sometimes, it’s also about being that regular, familiar visitor - something not everyone in a care home is fortunate enough to have,” says founder Roberta Svile.
“I’ve seen many cases where relatives holding Health and Welfare LPAs have little support in meeting their responsibilities - especially when they can’t visit often,” Roberta explains. “In many situations, early intervention could have prevented the decline we later saw. We’re here to help them carry out their duty with confidence and compassion.”
At Local Care Adviser, we review care plans and daily care records to identify links between actions and decline. Recent cases have revealed missed health appointments, forgotten referrals, and lapses in dignity or early signs of concern.
“Care is deeply personal,” Roberta adds. “Our goal is to make sure no one falls through the cracks, and that families feel confident their loved one is safe, seen, and supported.”

This month KYN Bickley’s Home Manager Daisy Slavkova discusses how to talk with a loved one about residential care.
Residential care provides roundthe-clock support within a safe and comfortable environment, offering great facilities, activities, and enrichment opportunities. If your loved one needs assistance with daily living, moving to a care home may greatly improve their quality of life.
Before discussing residential care, assess your loved one’s needs. This helps determine the support required. Always being mindful of your loved one’s rights, discuss contacting their GP or Social Services if they may be at risk. Moving to a care home could be beneficial if they struggle with tasks like getting in and out of bed, dressing, bathing, taking medication, housework, meal preparation, hobbies, and socialising.

residential care and their current needs. If they are resistant, understand it is a big change, and give them time and space to think before bringing it up again.
It’s best to broach the subject of care homes early, rather than waiting for a crisis. This helps everyone involved get used to the idea and gives you time to explore options. Start by discussing it hypothetically when they are happy and relaxed. Ask open questions to gauge their opinions on

Transitioning to residential living can be daunting. Listen with an open mind and address their concerns sincerely. For example, if they worry about loneliness, reassure them that you will visit regularly. All good care homes encourage visits and participation in activities.
Stay focused on the positives of residential living. Highlight the benefits and approach each conversation with a positive attitude. If they become upset, remain calm and reassure them that their feelings are important. Seek to understand their concerns, it might be the fear of losing control or a negative previous experience of care.
Let your loved one take the lead in the decisionmaking process. Encourage them to look through websites and brochures, ask questions, and visit residences that appeal to them. Help them prepare for the move as thoroughly as possible. At KYN you will find a welcoming team with expert advice and broad experience of these very conversations.

What’s the most important element of the dining experience? The table? The chairs? The food we share? Or the people we enjoy it all with? We’d argue it’s a delicate balance of all four.
As we’re focusing on what we know best (and having already explored dining tables) we’ve pulled together a “save me a seat” shortlist of dining heroes to sink your teeth into. These are the designs that have you scrambling (pun intended) for an excuse to gather friends and family to the table. The sort of around-the-table action that would have even King Arthur browsing the menu for a longer stay.
So, feast your eyes, prepare your moodboards, and discover below 10 of the most iconic dining chairs that your home could have.
VITRA:
When compiling a list of the most important

interiors in history, a general rule of thumb is that if it was designed by Charles and Ray Eames, it usually makes the cut. From lounge chairs to wall racks, and even the occasional elephant, their work includes designs the world will never forget. In this case, the Eames Shell Chairs stand (or sit) as the very embodiment of the mid-century dining setting: shapely, subtle, and suitable for almost any space. After all, there’s a reason Vitra continue to produce modern variations to this day.

CARL HANSEN:
The aptly named Wishbone Chair sits high on the wish lists of design enthusiasts the world over. Nearly 75 years ago, it debuted as an instant icon, marking the beginning of Hans J. Wegner’s legendary collaboration with the Scandinavian masters Carl Hansen & Søn. Crafted through more than 100 artisanal steps, the result is a serene and stylish piece that wouldn’t look out of place in the dining rooms of Nordhavn.
KNOLL:
A Knoll collection that needs no introduction by a designer of equal stature, Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Dining Chairs remain a timeless icon. Rooted in pure mid-century style and defined by generous sweeping curves, their sculptural pedestal base was Saarinen’s answer to what he called “the slum of legs” beneath the dining table. More than 65 years on, they endure as an award-winning, filmfeatured, retro-futuristic favourite.
FRITZ HANSEN:
As feats of invention go, 1955 was a golden year. Velcro was patented, the first microwave was introduced and, most importantly, Arne Jacobsen unveiled his magnum opus: the Series 7 Dining Chair. Unlike many of his other designs, it wasn’t created for a specific project, giving it a unique advantage: versatility. From the cosiest cottages to the grandest lecture halls of Oxford, Fritz

Hansen’s finest remains an essential wherever Scandinavian design is celebrated.
Much like the band, once Gubi’s Beetle Dining Chair was discovered by the design world, its popularity soared. A true line-blurrer, it transcends genres of interior design, adapting effortlessly to countless styles and settings. In our showroom, its many variations have been among the longeststanding features in an ever-evolving display. Why? First, because it works seamlessly with almost everything. And second, because ten years after GamFratesi first designed it, it remains exactly what furniture lovers want.
Sometimes tributes to legends become themselves legend. This is true of the Kartell Masters Dining Chair. If this piece of furniture looks a little familiar that’s because you’ve already seen it. A monument to the classics of the design world, the seating solution is shaped from the silhouette’s of the aforementioned Series 7, Tulip & Shell Chairs. While inspired by timeless greats, Philippe Starck’s chair became its own design hero when winning a Red Dot award in 2013. chaplins.co.uk

The dressing room has become one of the most coveted features of the modern home, valued not only for its association with luxury, but for the practicality it brings to daily life. Far more than a place for storage, a beautifully designed dressing room sets the tone of the day and offers a sense of calm and retreat at the end of the day.
At Neatsmith, every project begins with the client. The design process is a collaboration, considering how the room will be used, who will be using it, and which pieces deserve to be carefully stored or showcased. For some, that means bespoke shelving to house an extensive shoe or handbag collection. For others, it might be glass-fronted doors that transform clothing into a gallery-style display, or a central island with tailored compartments for jewellery and watches.
Increasingly, these spaces are evolving to become rooms in their own right. Homeowners are seeking dressing rooms that feel more like a private lounge or boutique, places to enjoy rather than simply to

use. Where space allows, seating is included, while features such as coffee stations or even mini bars elevate the experience, turning the dressing room into an extension of the home’s living spaces. Material choices are key to setting the tone.
Neatsmith’s Reflex glass doors, available in natural silver or smoked grey, are among the most popular options. The doors have a secret as when lit from the inside the glass becomes transparent to reveal the contents of the wardrobe. Richer tones and textures are also on the rise, from the warmth of walnut to deep green finishes and textured surfaces such as the new Cordona collection, which adds both depth and warmth.
Lighting is treated with equal importance.
Neatsmith integrates LED lighting throughout its designs, ensuring that the rooms are as practical as they are atmospheric. Proper lighting enhances usability but also sets the mood, elevating the dressing room into a space that feels considered and complete.
This autumn, Neatsmith opened a new showroom in Royal Tunbridge Wells, ideally situated on the high street, offering clients the opportunity to experience and view dressing room concepts. Here, visitors can explore finishes, layouts, and door styles, and meet with expert designers to create a bespoke dressing room entirely tailored to their home.

British fabric house Linwood is delighted to unveil Titania, a new collection of embroidered fabrics that reimagines traditional stitchwork with a fresh, modern spirit. From delicate florals to playful stripes, each design began as a handdrawn sketch in Linwood’s Hampshire studio before being translated into intricate embroidery on natural cloths.
Full of texture, charm, and artisanal detail, Titania offers a versatile range of decorative fabrics for curtains, blinds, cushions, headboards, and occasional upholstery. Presented in both soft neutrals and uplifting colourways, the collection blends simplicity with craftsmanship, delivering an unmistakably British style suited to both heritage and contemporary interiors.
Hermia A playful reimagining of the stripe, Hermia introduces undulating waves and geometric bands embroidered on pure linen. With its naïve stitch and textured details, this fabric brings colour, rhythm, and artisanal charm.
Oberon A contemporary take on stitchwork,

“A

Oberon’s lively embroidery forms a diamond trellis with subtle rickrack detail. Woven on a cottonlinen ground, it balances graphic precision with handcrafted sensibility.
Lysander This lyrical all-over embroidery combines flowing ribbon motifs with delicate florals, inspired by an archive design from circa 1900. Stitched on pure linen in a refined chain technique, Lysander brings a graceful, decorative quality.
Helena Striking in scale, Helena presents a stylised oak-leaf trail stitched with the traditional couching method. Flowing across a cotton-linen ground, its bold scale and classical detailing create a distinguished effect.
Titania reflects Linwood’s design ethos: heritage artistry interpreted with a modern sensibility. Each fabric balances decorative stitchwork with practical applications, offering designers and homeowners alike the opportunity to create interiors that are tactile, timeless, and full of personality.
Available now, the Titania collection adds a new dimension to Linwood’s portfolio of decorative textiles – celebrating the enduring beauty of embroidery in any home. linwoodfabric.com

As the festive season approaches, our homes become filled with the joyful chaos of family, friends and, inevitably, more “stuff” than usual – from extra food and drink, to winter coats and gifts. Thoughtfully designed, bespoke storage can transform even the busiest home – helping to keep everything calm, organised and above all, welcoming.
Around the kitchen table
The kitchen is often the heart of festive gatherings. Combining storage with dining means everything flows more smoothly – from a festive feast to a lazy breakfast.
Stylish seating and built-it cupboards beneath an island, or deep drawers within an extendable dining table – they all bring convenience and valuable space. And when an off-the-shelf table isn’t quite right, a bespoke design ensures perfect proportions.
Practical pantries
A dedicated larder or pantry cupboard brings order to Christmas chaos.
Designed with a bespoke layout including shelving, spice racks, drawers, power sockets and cold shelf, they store groceries, ingredients and small appliances all in one convenient place.
Whether freestanding or seamlessly built in, they make festive cooking a joy rather than a juggling act.

Room for celebration
Bespoke wine and drinks storage is increasingly sought after. From a discreet bar tucked behind pocket doors to a full wall of wine racks, there are endless ways to create a stylish space for entertaining.
A warm welcome
With guests coming and going, bundled up in their layers, clever cabinetry in the hallway keeps coats, boots and bags neatly stowed away, leaving a clear and inviting entrance.
Great storage isn’t just about tidiness; it’s about creating space to enjoy what really matters.

Imagine the scene: a bustling Christmas morning kitchen. The smell of cinnamon and roasting turkey (or perhaps a glorious festive breakfast) fills the air. A loved one leans in to season the gravy, and there, sitting proudly on the counter, is a charming wooden T&G Christmas Tree Mill . Or maybe they reach for the adorable T&G Snowman Mill to perfectly season the scrambled eggs.
These mills capture the playful spirit of the holidays. Crafted from natural wood, they feature high-quality ceramic mechanisms, which means they are built to last—turning a whimsical holiday novelty into a genuine kitchen heirloom.
One of the most wonderful things about these mills is the variety of styles, allowing you to choose the perfect match for any festive home:
• Classic Cheer: The traditional Natural Wood Christmas Tree Mill blends beautifully into a rustic, Scandi, or minimalist setting.
• A Pop of Festivity: Choose the vibrant Red or the deep, elegant Green to make a bold statement next to your holiday platters.
• Modern Elegance: The chic Black and soft White options bring a sophisticated, contemporary flair to the dining table.
Whether adorning the Christmas dinner table or standing watch over the counter as you prep the turkey, they are a charming accent that signals the start of the holiday season.
While they look like delightful decorative ornaments, these are serious, practical kitchen tools. The ceramic mechanism is non-corrosive and fully adjustable, making them suitable for grinding salt, pepper, and even dried herbs and spices.
When you gift a T&G Christmas Mill, you’re giving:
• A Memory: A subtle reminder of happy times cooking and eating together every time they reach for it.
• Quality: A premium, durable mill with a guarantee, designed for daily use.
• Festive Joy: A piece of Christmas magic that will be unwrapped and displayed year after year.
This year, skip the generic stocking fillers and choose a gift that combines exceptional utility with irresistible festive charm. The T&G Limited Edition Christmas Mills are a truly cherished present that will be part of their Christmas story for many seasons to come.

Set within a full-scale family renovation in leafy Kent, this modern kitchen and bespoke dressing room offer a masterclass in material contrast, hidden function, and everyday elegance. Designed in partnership with Schmidt, the spaces reflect a seamless blend of minimalist form and thoughtful craftsmanship.
“We wanted something that felt cohesive with the rest of the home - modern, neutral, but with a real sense of character,” the homeowners explain. “The kitchen is now the centrepiece of family life. It is not just where we cook, it is where we gather.”
Central to the kitchen’s impact is the large island, with Bosca Stria doors. Their textured surface adds both visual depth and architectural flow.
To maintain an uncluttered aesthetic, the design intentionally omits wall units. Instead, Jumbo Line drawers and deep cabinetry offer discreet storage, while a generous walk-in pantry ensures everything has its place.
“The clever storage was essential,” they say. “We wanted the kitchen to feel open and calm, but it still had to function for daily family use. The internal layout made that possible.”
By contrast, the dressing room posed a different challenge: a compact footprint with limited natural light. Here, the focus was on

“We wanted the kitchen to feel open and calm, but it still had to function for daily family use. The internal layout made that possible”
creating a streamlined, high-function space without compromising on finish. Bespoke cabinetry and smart internal fittings maximised every inch.
Beyond design, the couple were also drawn to Schmidt’s sustainability credentials, including eco-certified materials and a circular approach to manufacturing. “That ethos really appealed to us. It felt like a brand aligned with the values we were trying to build into our home.”
Despite unforeseen delays from contractors, the Schmidt team remained agile. “They were brilliant, adaptable with timing, and genuinely collaborative in guiding layout and material choices.”
The renovation took place over six months, integrated into the broader construction programme. The result is a home that feels elevated yet effortless. “The walk-in pantry is always a talking point, and the island drawers make staying organised surprisingly easy. It has transformed how we live.”
Their advice for anyone starting a similar journey? “Take the time to explore materials and finishes in person. And work with a team who really understand how you want to live.”
