Create and share memories with the National Trust this spring
With gorgeous springtime scenes presenting unbeatable photo opportunities, you’ll want to get out into the gardens and woodlands at Chartwell and Emmetts Garden. See Chartwell’s orchard filled with apple blossoms, blue camassia and yellow buttercups. Find out why Emmetts Garden is famed for spectacular spring blooms.

The Easter Bank Holiday weekend may be over, but there are still Easter Adventures aplenty at Chartwell and Emmetts Garden (until 19 April, additional fee for trail sheet, bunny ears, chocolate egg). Head to Chartwell for eggcellent activities including rolling egg races, an obstacle course, magnetic eggs to decorate and more.
There’s also a Community Easter Egg Display to discover. Members of local groups and schools decorated giant wooden eggs which have been displayed along the path leading to Chartwell’s woodland. For even more exploring, head into the woods for family-friendly play spaces like the two-story treehouse, swings and a bomb crater with balance beams and climbing ropes.
Head to Emmetts Garden for circus skills and fairground games. From spinning plates and sock poi to the coconut shy and silly mirrors, plus balancing acts and a music wall, there’s plenty for all ages to enjoy. Added extras include children’s fairground rides (to 12 April, additional fee) and Punch and Judy performances (14 and 16 April). There’s also the Wild Play area near the recently renovated Old Stables Tea Room. Take part in activities then refresh with your favourite National Trust treats.

Quebec House may be known as the birthplace of General James Wolfe, but from April visitors can also explore a new exhibition telling the story of the 18th-century children left in the care of the Westerham branch of the Foundling Hospital.
Created in collaboration with Coram, the UK’s first and longest-serving children’s charity, discover the role of maternal love tokens, and see those created by school children of today.
Look behind the scenes with Conservation in Action sessions in the house. Enjoy live demonstrations with opportunities to ask questions about the collections (27-29 April).
This season’s theme of ‘Churchill the Artist’ features new items on display and guided highlights tours which provide exclusive entrance into Sir Winston Churchill’s bedroom (additional fee, selected dates to 22 May).
The Studio continues to wow with more than 100 of Churchill’s paintings and an exhibition of the winners of the ‘Inspired by Chartwell’ competition. Catch a talk given by volunteer room stewards. One such presentation inspired Hong Lam, the 16-25s winner to capture a view of the house from outside the studio.
As April gives way to May, Chartwell welcomes visitors to the Meadow of Memories, an installation of handcrafted steel daisies presented by local charity, Hospice in the Weald (2-17 May).

“May is also the start of ‘Chartwell 60’ with programming and events to mark the 60th anniversary of Chartwell’s opening to the public on 22 June 1966”

May is also the start of ‘Chartwell 60’ with programming and events to mark the 60th anniversary of Chartwell’s opening to the public on 22 June 1966. The ‘Chartwell 60’ story begins with the transformation of the Churchills’ muchloved family home into a treasured place for members of the public to visit.
From 23 May, look out for new displays in the house and in outdoor spaces. The guided highlight tours present the Chartwell 60 story from 25 May to 17 July. Specially created for the 60th anniversary, tickets are expected to go quickly. Save the dates of 20-21 June for a celebration weekend of picnics, music and dancing.
The 60-year story of Chartwell becoming a favourite National Trust destination wouldn’t be complete without hearing from members of the public. That’s why Chartwell is inviting visitors to share the moments, big or small, that have made Chartwell personally meaningful. Some of these words and images will feature in a special outdoor display to share with visitors in September.
There are several ways to add a favourite Chartwell memory. A dedicated online survey, open from April to July, invites visitors to share a story and upload an image. There will also be onsite post boxes to drop off postcards with written memories. Social media users can tag @ChartwellNT and #Chartwell60 to share snaps and stories from Chartwell visits long ago or more recently. See the Chartwell website for more information on how to take part.
From the great outdoors to fascinating historic spaces, there’s so much to explore with the National Trust.

The grounds at Hever Castle & Gardens wake early with rivers of white invalid snowdrops in February, blaze a golden trail of daffodils in March but come April all the colours of the rainbow are on display thanks to the bluebells, blossom, thousands of tulips, the azaleas and rhododendrons.
Highlights this month include the long sweeping borders of multicoloured tulips on Pergola Walk,- more technicolour than Joseph’s coat, they seemingly face off, light-heartedly, with the more formal block coloured tulip planting on the opposite Pompeiian Wall. There’s a design here for everyone’s taste from geometric patterns, long lines and fantastic pots and urns filled to the brim with spring flowers.
It’s not just about the spectacle at Hever, if you hug the pathways around the Italian Garden you’ll come upon Blue Corner - a place rich in scent in April thanks to hundreds of blue hyacinths who take up residence in this reimagined rock garden.
Walking upwards from Blue Corner to the Arbour visitors come to grasslands that have been left to grow on the areas beside the Arbour - here white Peasant Eye daffodils, who are always late to the party (!), dance with red Tulipa Linfolia. As the former home of

Anne Boleyn, the red and white design here could be said to be a botanical ode to the Tudor rose!
April isn’t just about the tulips though, there are pathways of azaleas to discover close to Half Moon Pond, and a long sweeping twin border of rhododendrons that hug the pathway the spans upwards from the Castle to the Golden Staircase.
Here the rhododendrons were cut back hard a few years ago, and while it looked as startling as a new haircut to begin with, the shrubs have now grown back with renewed health and vigour, putting on a vibrant display.
The woodland at Hever is undiscovered by many visitors but it’s well worth the trip - here you’ll find bluebells and fallen logs, left to house bugs in 5 star wooden hotels! The walk to find the woods - to the left of Lake Walk - is a delight in April, it’s here that you can really see things progressing in the landscape and fully coming to life again.

As the days get longer and the Kent countryside comes into its own, there’s a very particular kind of magic waiting just down the road. The return of the Hever Festival Theatre season brings with it that unmistakable feeling of summer evenings well spent – live performance shared with family and friends, in the fresh air, in one of the most beautiful settings in the region.
Set within the grounds of Hever Castle, the festival offers a programme that genuinely feels like something for everyone. This year, that ranges from open-air classics like Romeo & Juliet, staged on Anne Boleyn’s Walk, to lively music nights including The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars and Jazz: Motown & More - perfect for those long, warm evenings.
Music fans are particularly well catered for, with standout tribute performances such as The Ed Sheeran Experience and Oasiz, bringing big concert energy to an intimate setting, while The Simon & Garfunkel Story offers something a little more nostalgic and atmospheric.

There’s plenty for families too, with much-loved titles including The Jungle Book and Around the World in 80 Days making it an easy choice for a summer outing with younger audiences. And for something a little different, Mozart’s Così fan tutte or the ever-charming Iolanthe bring a touch of operatic flair to the season, alongside lighter comedy such as General Medical Emergency.
What makes it especially appealing for local audiences - whether you’re in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Westerham, Oxted or further afield - is just how easy it feels. No long journeys, no big-city rush. Just a short trip into the countryside and an evening that feels like a proper escape.
Pack a picnic or enjoy the on-site offerings, settle in as the sun goes down, and let the atmosphere do the rest. The Hever Festival Theatre season has quietly become one of the highlights of the local summer and once you’ve been, it’s easy to see why so many people return year after year.

“Set within the grounds of Hever Castle, the festival offers a programme that genuinely feels like something for everyone”

Introducing the Winemaker’s Pub, a modern interpretation of the classic Kentish local, brought to life by Balfour Winery. It is, at heart, a pub, but one with vineyard credentials and a quiet confidence about what’s in your glass.
Fully integrated with the estate, the bar pours the complete range of Balfour wines, from bright, orchard-fresh whites to elegant, structured reds and the estate’s much-admired English sparkling. This isn’t a token gesture to the family name; it’s the full repertoire, served just a shuttle ride from the vines themselves. Not that it’s only about wine. A carefully kept line-up of beers keeps pint drinkers content, while a thoughtful back bar of spirits caters to those who favour a Negroni, a proper pint, or a bracingly cold G&T. Sometimes, after all, all you need is a very good drink and a packet of crisps.
The food is resolutely ‘pubby’ in the best sense: generous, seasonal, and rooted in British comfort. There’s a classic pub menu built for long lunches and unhurried suppers . Think crisp fish and chips, burgers worth leaning into, and plates that invite a second glass. Pizzas emerge blistered and generous from the oven, ideal for sharing (or not). Puddings are properly nostalgic and unashamedly

comforting. A dedicated children’s menu ensures smaller guests are just as well looked after, and every Sunday there’s a traditional roast with all the trimmings. The sort that turns an afternoon into an occasion.
Upstairs, four boutique bedrooms offer a place to fall into crisp sheets after an evening that ran agreeably away with itself. Each room is quietly stylish, more countryside retreat than over-designed showpiece — somewhere you’ll wake to soft light and the faint sense you’ve made an excellent decision.
Events keep the calendar lively, from relaxed tastings to a monthly themed quiz held on the first Thursday of every month. Occasionally fiercely competitive, always goodhumoured, the prize is a Tour and Tasting voucher at the estate.
Because this isn’t just a pub; it’s part of a wider wine story. Tours, tastings and even lunch at the winery can be woven into your stay, with a shuttle to and from the vineyard (a civilised solution to the thorny issue of who’s driving).
Come for a pint, stay for supper, leave with a case.

There was a time when a “vineyard tour” required a passport and a flight, but today, world-class winemaking is happening right here in the heart of Kent. Open Wednesday to Sunday from April to October, Yotes Court captures the very best of modern English wine—the perfect opportunity to trade the rush of everyday life for a chilled glass of something homegrown in the fresh air.

The estate serves as a versatile backdrop for everything from milestone birthdays and hen parties to inspiring corporate away days. Whether you’re there for work or play, the atmosphere remains stylish yet down-to-earth.
For those seeking a relaxed escape, the Wine Barn and Paddock Lawn offer wine by the glass, tasting flights and platters using locally sourced ingredients — ideal for an unplanned afternoon in the countryside. Experience the panoramic vineyard views and warm welcome.
For those looking to venture beyond the glass they can book a vineyard tour and guided wine tasting. In a walk through the vines, your host will explain the vine lifecycle and the passion and dedication required to produce high quality grapes for still and sparkling wines in our climate. In the tasting room, with panoramic views over the vineyard, an expert guide takes you through a selection of wines where you learn how the wines are created and the different tastes and aromas associated with each grape variety.
Nestled between Mereworth and West Peckham, this 30-hectare Kent estate has become one of the county’s most exciting wine destinations. Established in 2016 by racehorse owner Susannah Ricci, Yotes Court is a certified Gold member of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain, producing single-vintage, single-varietal still and sparkling wines exclusively from grapes grown on the estate.

Ivisited Luma on a Thursday evening, and it delivered a dining experience that felt both refined and relaxed. The restaurant was pleasantly busy, creating a vibrant, lively atmosphere without ever feeling overwhelming. From the moment we arrived, the buzz of conversation and the warm, contemporary setting struck a perfect balance between energy and comfort, setting the tone for an enjoyable evening.
One of the highlights of Luma was undoubtedly its use of the Josper oven, which elevated the menu in a way that was immediately noticeable. This unique charcoal oven imparted a deep, smoky flavour to dishes while locking in moisture, resulting in food that was both rich and perfectly cooked. This was especially evident in the T-bone steak we ordered, which was beautifully seared on the outside while remaining tender, juicy, and full of flavour. The tuna steak was equally impressive— perfectly cooked with a delicate texture and a subtle smokiness that enhanced its natural freshness without overpowering it. It was clear that the kitchen knew how to make the most of this impressive piece of equipment.
The drinks offering was equally impressive, with a great selection of wines, beers, and cocktails to complement the food. The wine list catered to a range of tastes, while the beers provided both familiar favourites and interesting options. The cocktails were particularly enjoyable, well-balanced and thoughtfully prepared, adding an extra layer to the overall experience.
Equally memorable was the service, particularly from our server, Tatiana. She struck exactly the right balance between attentiveness and allowing us space to enjoy our meal. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic, she guided us through the menu with confidence and offered thoughtful recommendations. Her warm approach added a personal touch that made the experience feel special rather than routine.
Another standout feature of Luma was its large patio area at the front. Even on a cooler evening, it was easy to imagine how transformative this space would be in the summer months. With plenty of seating and an open, airy layout, it had all the ingredients to create a vibrant Mediterranean-style atmosphere. I could easily picture long, leisurely lunches or relaxed evening dinners with friends, enjoying great food in the sunshine.
Overall, Luma combined high-quality cooking, excellent service, and a versatile setting to create a restaurant well worth visiting, and I am already looking forward to revisiting.

As spring settles in and longer evenings return, Fish Union Bar & Grill continues to find its rhythm— balancing confident cooking with a growing calendar of events that give diners plenty of reasons to return.
The immediate date for the diary is 30th April, when Fish Union hosts a Portuguese wine dinner that’s already close to selling out. With just a handful of spaces remaining, this promises to be one of the more memorable evenings of the season. Hosted by Rui of Liberty Wines, a specialist in Portuguese vintages, alongside chef Richard Kirkwood, the night will pair a carefully curated selection of wines with a bespoke menu designed to bring out their best. It’s set to be as informative as it is relaxed—an opportunity to explore a lesser-known corner of the wine world with expert guidance.
Beyond April, there’s more on the horizon. Guests are encouraged to keep an eye on the restaurant’s website and social channels, where details of upcoming events will be announced.

Chief among them is Fish Union’s first-ever Summer Festival, set to take place on the terrace at the end of May. Expect live music, barbecues, and a lively, open-air atmosphere that leans fully into the season.
And with warmer days already making an appearance, the terrace itself is back in play. It’s the perfect setting for a casual drink, particularly with the return of a crowd favourite—Frozen Margaritas—joining a drinks list that continues to evolve alongside the kitchen.
For those who have yet to visit, and for those already familiar, Fish Union Bar & Grill feels perfectly in step with the season: relaxed, consistent, and ready for what’s next.

The new Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen is now open inside The Cumberland Hotel, just steps from Hyde Park, bringing one of Gordon Ramsay’s most recognisable global restaurant concepts to London for the first time.
Following successful launches in cities including Las Vegas, Miami and Ibiza, the opening marks the UK debut of the internationally loved brand giving Londoners and visitors the chance to experience the restaurant inspired by the hit TV show.
The 7,500 sq ft restaurant centres around an open kitchen where chefs cook in full view of diners, wearing the show’s iconic red-and-blue bandanas. Flames, vibrant tiles and live kitchen theatre recreate the feel of the series, while DJs play throughout the week to keep the room lively from lunch into late evening.
With more than 200 covers, four chef’s tables and a dedicated bar, the restaurant is designed as a high-energy dining room where guests can watch the kitchen in action.
The menu brings together signature dishes from Hell’s Kitchen restaurants around the world, alongside new creations developed specifically for London. Lunch options include the legendary Idiot Sandwich a flavour-packed short rib creation made famous by the show alongside the Hell’s Kitchen Burger, native lobster roll and handcrafted pizzas finished with fiery toppings.

As a Hell’s Kitchen first, the London restaurant also offers premium sharing cuts, including a 1.2kg Wagyu tomahawk, bone-in striploin and chateaubriand. Guests can dine on signatures such as lobster risotto built on a rich, slow-cooked stock and the iconic Beef Wellington, which has become the restaurant’s defining centrepiece. Desserts include rich sticky toffee pudding and apple butterscotch cheesecake, offering a playful twist on a classic.

How to release capital from your garden

“With the proceeds from the sale of my garden plot I have paid off my mortgage entirely”
Homeowners looking to unlock significant wealth from their properties are selling off parts of their gardens for development and receiving a substantial tax free windfall.
- Colchester Resident
With the right sized garden in the right location, it is possible to earn in excess of £250,000 by selling the land to a developer - and stay in control of the process without the financial burden or risk of going it alone.
Why it pays to work with an expert
Small site developers Caswell&Dainow specialise in spotting the potential in underutilised land and unlocking maximum value with minimum risk to the homeowner.
“The way we work is tailored to each land owner. We don’t just buy the land and build. As trained architects, we enter into a partnership with the land owners and we involve them throughout the project. We take on

all of the design and legal costs required to achieve planning consent and will pay the pre agreed sum once permission is granted” says Adam Dainow.
Would your garden qualify?
Homeowners considering selling part of their land typically meet several of the following criteria:
1. Inside an Existing Residential Area
Land within established towns, suburbs or villages benefits from national planning support, allowing new homes to integrate naturally into existing neighbourhoods.
2. Larger Than Surrounding Plots
Unusually deep or wide gardens compared to neighbouring properties are often more suitable for subdivision without appearing cramped or overdeveloped.
3. Potential for Separate Access
Side access, corner plots, or space for an independent driveway significantly improve the likelihood of planning approval.
4. Close to Transport or Amenities
Proximity to stations, bus routes, shops, and schools aligns with planning policy favouring walkable, well-connected locations.
5. Similar Developments Nearby
Existing infill homes or subdivided gardens nearby are a strong indicator that further development may be considered acceptable.

“I made a substantial amount of money from the sale of the back portion of my garden giving me total security for my retirement. The process was surprisingly straightforward – one of the best decisions I’ve made”

There was a time when staying fit meant forcing yourself through repetitive gym routines, counting reps while watching the clock. For many busy professionals juggling careers and family life, that approach can feel more like a chore than a reward. Increasingly, people across the UK are turning to a different kind of workout, one that feels less like obligation and more like play: bouldering, an accessible form of climbing done at low height above safety mats.

What makes bouldering stand out is simple. It delivers a full body workout without feeling like one. Every climb engages your arms, legs, core and balance. But unlike traditional gym sessions, the focus is not on repetition, it is on movement, problem solving and progression. You are not just exercising,

you are figuring things out. That sense of achievement is what keeps motivation high and makes people want to come back.
Bouldering is also inherently social. Whether you arrive with friends or on your own, it is easy to share tips or celebrate progress. Climbs are often described as puzzles, and working through them together adds a layer of engagement that few other fitness activities offer.
Modern climbing gyms have evolved to support a well rounded approach to fitness. Alongside the walls, you will typically find training areas with weights and conditioning equipment, allowing you to combine strength training and climbing in one place.
Regular social nights and events create a welcoming atmosphere and help people stay consistent. It is not unusual to see families, groups of friends and solo climbers all sharing the same space.
Perhaps most surprising is how accessible bouldering is. It requires no technical climbing knowledge or equipment, it caters to all abilities, and its appeal spans generations. While it remains popular with younger audiences, a growing proportion of climbers are 35 and over, many discovering it as a refreshing way to stay fit.
Bouldering is more than a trend, but it is certainly having a moment, and for many, it is transforming how fitness fits into their lives.

Rhino Boulder is a community focused indoor bouldering gym offering high quality climbing, inclusive programmes, and a welcoming, social environment for people of all ages and abilities.
For further details, call Rhino Boulder on 020 8050 8720, visit their website at www.rhinoboulder.co.uk, or turn up and climb at their gym in Units 6&7 The Mall, Bromley, BR1 1TR

In the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells, where independent shops still lend character to the High Street, Josephs Jewellers has built its reputation not only on what it sells, but on what it buys. Josephs is a trusted place to bring unwanted or unused jewellery and receive a fair, straightforward valuation.
While jewellers have traditionally been associated with life’s milestones, engagements, anniversaries and celebrations, there is an equally important, more practical role that often goes overlooked.

Businesses that buy from the public provide a vital service, offering individuals a reliable way to unlock the value of items that might otherwise sit unused in drawers or safes.
In this respect, Josephs serves as a bridge between sentiment and practicality, helping customers turn possessions into liquidity with confidence.
Selling personal items can feel uncertain, particularly in a market where prices and processes are not always clear. This is where an established, local business makes a difference. Josephs offers transparency, clear explanations and face-to-face interaction, qualities that online platforms and remote buyers often lack. Customers are not simply completing a transaction; they are engaging in a conversation, guided by experience and professional judgement.

The second-hand jewellery trade has sometimes been burdened by outdated perceptions. In reality, modern businesses in this field operate within strict regulations and place strong emphasis on fairness and accountability. By providing honest valuations and immediate payment, a local jeweller like Josephs reinforces trust within the community, something especially important in a town like Tunbridge Wells, where reputation matters.
There is also a broader significance to buying from the public. Each piece that passes through Josephs represents reuse rather than waste, contributing to a more sustainable, circular economy. Jewellery that might otherwise be forgotten is given a second life, whether through resale or transformation, ensuring that craftsmanship and materials retain their value over time.

Ultimately, businesses like Josephs endure because they offer something simple but essential: certainty. In moments when people choose to sell, whether out of necessity, practicality or change, they need clarity, fairness and discretion. By focusing on these principles, Josephs Jewellers demonstrates how buying from the public is not just a service, but a cornerstone of a resilient and trusted High Street presence.

Gifting money directly to your grandchildren could give them a valuable financial headstart. It could also be a tax-efficient way of passing on wealth to the next generation while helping to manage your estate’s inheritance tax (IHT) liability.
It’s expensive being young University tuition fees in England and Wales now top £9,500 a year1, while the average UK house price stood at £271,415 in March 2025 – that’s 53.8% higher than a decade ago2. These challenges mean that gifting money directly to grandchildren could make a bigger difference to their financial security than if they were to wait for an inheritance.
How to gift money tax efficiently
Leaving money through your will might be one of the least tax-efficient ways to pass on wealth, and could come too late to make a meaningful difference.
There are several ways to pass on wealth to grandchildren while you’re alive that could also help to manage IHT.
• Junior ISAs and bare trusts
A Junior ISA (Individual Savings Account) is a good way to save for a young grandchild’s future. While only parents or legal guardians can open one, anyone can contribute. The annual tax-free limit for a Junior ISA is £9,000.
Alternatively, a bare trust has no investment limits. Contributions made into bare trusts by someone who’s not the child’s parent/guardian are taxed as if they belong to the child, often resulting in minimal or no tax being due.
Once your grandchild turns 18, they can use the funds from either option as they wish.
• Lifetime gifts
Annually, you can gift £3,000 IHT-free and £2,500 for a grandchild’s marriage or civil partnership. Larger gifts, called potentially exempt transfers, may be IHT exempt if you survive seven years.
There’s an exemption for ‘gifts out of surplus income’ that can be used to cover recurrent costs, such as school fees. These gifts must:
—Be part of your normal expenditure
—Be made from your income (not capital)
—Leave you with sufficient income to maintain your standard of living.
• Buy a life assurance policy
If you have surplus income, you could also fund a wholeof-life insurance policy, which is paid out on death and can provide a means to pay some of your estate’s IHT bill.
Securing your family’s financial security while gifting money can be challenging. That’s where a wealth manager can help. They will create a personalised financial plan to let you gift assets and build a legacy.

When facing legal matters, whether personal or business-related, the guidance of a qualified solicitor can make all the difference.
A solicitor is a legal professional who provides advice, drafts documents, and represents clients in legal matters. While many may attempt to handle legal issues independently, there are several key advantages to hiring a solicitor.
Firstly, solicitors bring a wealth of legal knowledge and expertise. Laws can be complex and ever-changing, making it difficult for individuals without legal training to navigate them effectively. Solicitors are well-versed in relevant legislation, case law, and legal procedures, allowing them to offer accurate and reliable advice tailored to your situation. Their knowledge helps ensure that you don’t miss critical details that could jeopardise your case or legal standing.

“Solicitors
bring a wealth of legal knowledge and expertise. Laws can be complex and ever-changing, making it difficult for individuals without legal training to navigate them effectively”
Secondly, a solicitor can help you avoid costly mistakes. Legal errors, such as missing deadlines or failing to follow proper procedures, can have serious consequences, including the dismissal of a case or the loss of a legal right. With a solicitor’s assistance, you are more likely to meet all necessary legal requirements, helping you to avoid unnecessary expenses or setbacks in the future.
Moreover, solicitors have experience in negotiation and dispute resolution. Whether you are buying property, resolving a family matter, or engaged in business dealings, a solicitor can represent your interests and negotiate on your behalf. Their experience in handling negotiations can often result in more favourable outcomes, whether through settlement, mediation, or court proceedings.
Additionally, solicitors offer peace of mind. Legal matters can be stressful, and knowing that a professional is handling the situation reduces anxiety and ensures that you have the right guidance at every step. The ability to trust someone with the intricacies of your case allows you to focus on other important aspects of your life or business. In conclusion, using a solicitor offers numerous advantages, from expert legal advice to better negotiation outcomes and protection from costly errors. Their role is crucial in navigating the oftencomplicated legal landscape, making them an invaluable resource when legal matters arise.

– The finest independent schools in the UK –
Tom Quilter – Headmaster
As we build on over 100 years of excellence, Bickley Park continues to go from strength to strength thanks to our forward-thinking, nurturing approach rooted in strong values. Following our successful move to co-education in 2024, and the launch of our pre-school, we recently also announced our plan to join the Sevenoaks Family of Schools, further enriching opportunities for our children and staff.
One of the aspects I am most proud of here at school is our Four Quadrants of Learning—a broad and balanced curriculum that underpins everything we do across the school, including our Early Years provision. These Four Quadrants reflect our commitment to offering every child a rich and varied range of opportunities, enabling us to identify, nurture and celebrate individual talents wherever they may lie.

This journey begins in our Early Years settingencompassing Nursery, Pre-School and Reception. A free-flow approach is central to life here, where children are encouraged to explore a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. Carefully designed to support early development, these experiences help build fine and gross motor skills, number awareness, social confidence and early phonological understanding through engaging, multi-sensory learning.
Alongside this strong, play-based foundation, children in our Pre-school and Early Years benefit from specialist teaching in subjects such as Art, Music, Physical Education and Spanish. Introducing these areas from an early age ensures that children enjoy exceptional opportunities to develop a broad range of skills and interests.

We also recognise the importance of supporting working families. From Reception onwards, we offer a variety of extracurricular clubs, including creative activities, crafts and multi-sports, as well as breakfast and after-school care—providing both enrichment for children and flexibility for parents. Above all, we hope every child embraces the many opportunities available at Bickley Park. We encourage them to be curious, to try new things and to be brave in their learning. From pre-school through to Year 8, our aim is for every pupil to “Be All You Can Be.”

For over 140 years, Bromley High School GDST has championed one belief: girls thrive when they’re educated in an environment designed exclusively for them. From age 4 to 18, pupils learn free from the gender stereotypes that can hold girls back. Girls take centre stage - every voice heard, every talent nurtured, every ambition encouraged.
Research shows that girls achieve more in girls’ schools. They secure stronger academic results, explore a wider range of subjects - especially STEM - and develop confidence, resilience and leadership skills. With no pressure to ‘fit in’, girls take more risks, speak up and lead boldly. At Bromley High School, the curriculum, classrooms and culture are intentionally shaped around how girls learn best.

Excellent academic results
Expert teaching and a broad curriculum enable every girl to reach her potential. In 2025, A level pupils achieved 62% A*–A and 87% A*–B, with 97% securing their preferred universities. GCSE pupils achieved 52% grades 9–8 and 71% 9–7.
Designed for girls’ growth
With 25 acres of green space, girls have room to thrive. Outstanding sports facilities, revamped science labs, a music wing equipped with allSteinway pianos and a dedicated Wellbeing Hub ensure girls feel supported academically, physically and emotionally.
Confidence that lasts a lifetime

With every subject and opportunity open to them, girls grow in confidence - whether through sport, music, drama, art or academic societies. More than 90 clubs, from coding to football, help each girl discover her passions. If a pupil joins us in Year 7, they enjoy a full and positive transition from their junior school - and strong pastoral care, peer mentoring and dedicated PSHE ensures they feel happy, valued and ready to achieve.

The ‘best of both worlds’, the ‘ideal mix’, the ‘place I always dreamt of finding’ – these are just some of the comments we often hear from families when they first discover Somerhill. Set within a stunning 400-year-old Jacobean mansion surrounded by 150 acres of parkland, Somerhill is a beautifully unique independent prep school where learning, adventure and childhood flourish in equal measure.
Our grounds are not simply a backdrop, but a vital part of everyday life. Children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover, whether in the classroom, the woodlands, fields, or gardens. It is in these moments that curiosity grows, friendships are formed, and confidence begins to take shape. There is a tangible sense of joy across Somerhill, and the sound of laughter carries through the grounds.
We have a simple belief: happy children want to learn. This is a school where pupils are encouraged to ‘get stuck in’ – to try new things and embrace the endless opportunities on offer, take on challenges, and celebrate their progress along the way. Success in sport can build resilience in the classroom; achievement in music can inspire leadership or creative expression. We aim to nurture confident, kind, and capable young people who persevere and believe in themselves.

“We have a simple belief: happy children want to learn. This is a school where pupils are encouraged to ‘get stuck in’ –to try new things and embrace the endless opportunities”

What truly sets Somerhill apart is our distinctive model: we have one way of living, but two ways of learning. From ages 2 to 7, boys and girls learn together in a co-educational environment that celebrates play, creativity and curiosity. From 7 to 13, pupils are taught in single-sex classes, allowing teaching to be tailored to different learning styles, while still enjoying a fully co-educational experience beyond the classroom. Break times, sports, clubs and activities are shared, creating a strong sense of community where every child feels known and valued.
Somerhill is more than just a school; it is a place where children are encouraged to be themselves, to grow in confidence and to embrace opportunity. We warmly invite families to visit us at our open morning in May, where you can meet our new Headteacher, Rhian Thornton, or you can arrange a personal tour with our admissions team at a time that suits you.
Come and experience Somerhill for yourself – a place where we grow amazing people every day.

At The King’s School Canterbury, education is not simply a sequence of stages, but a thoughtfully connected journey. From the early years through to sixth form, every step is designed to nurture confidence and curiosity.
Choosing to join Junior King’s in Year 7 allows pupils to experience the best of prep school life for two additional years, an invaluable period where creativity flourishes and children are given the space to explore who they are as learners. Small class sizes, specialist teaching, and exceptional facilities combine with a deeply rooted pastoral ethos to ensure that every child is supported and inspired, both academically and personally.

Learning at Junior King’s extends far beyond the classroom. Set within a beautiful and expansive site, the school provides an ideal environment for experiential learning, where pupils are encouraged to explore and grow in confidence. From outdoor education and a wide range of sports to music, drama and inter-house competitions, every child is given the opportunity to find their strengths and pursue their passions.
This richness of experience is complemented by flexible boarding options, including day, flexi and full boarding, which help to support families and ease each stage of a pupil’s journey through King’s and beyond. Junior King’s pupils take part in events and activities at the senior site, building familiarity and confidence long before they move into Year 9.
As a result, progression to Senior King’s feels natural rather than transitional. Pupils arrive with a strong sense of belonging, already comfortable within the environment and ready to embrace new challenges. This connection is reinforced academically through a carefully aligned curriculum. Programmes such as Global Perspectives begin in Year 7 and continue into the senior years, encouraging pupils to think critically, engage with global issues, and develop the independence required for GCSEs, A Levels and life beyond school.
While the 11+ pathway offers a clear and connected route, King’s also prides itself on a vibrant 13+ intake. Pupils joining at this stage bring fresh perspectives, new friendships and an added dynamism that enriches the whole community.
Whether entering at 11+ or 13+, the King’s experience is defined by opportunity, continuity and care. Families are warmly invited to discover this for themselves at one of the school’s Open Mornings or through a personal visit, an ideal way to experience firsthand the spirit and breadth of opportunity that define a King’s education.

Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.
wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.
Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘
‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!
And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.
Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!
The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

Are you struggling with knee osteoarthritis? There’s a groundbreaking, non-surgical treatment now available at North Downs Hospital that is redefining treatment for patients living with knee pain.
Revolutionary Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. While joint replacement surgery is effective, it is also a major invasive procedure with a lengthy recovery period. But now, there’s an alternative.
Introducing Arthrosamid®
Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel (2.5% iPAAG) implant consisting of 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5% water. It is administered via a simple, one-step procedure performed under local anaesthesia by a qualified physician, such as an orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist1 — ensuring you’re in and out of the clinic the same day. Arthrosamid® is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain2,3— even five years post-treatment.2
How does Arthrosamid® work?
Arthrosamid® is the first and only permanent injectable implant that integrates with the knee’s synovial tissue,4 forming a scaffold that softens and increases tissue elasticity. This leads to decreased joint stiffness, reduced pain, and improved knee function.5,6,7

“As a Consultant Knee Surgeon, my duty is to preserve the native joint for as long as possible. Many of the active patients I see are limited not just by knee pain, but by the frustration of losing their independence and active lifestyle. Treatments such as Arthrosamid offer a safe, minimally invasive option to reduce knee pain, improve function, and help delay or even avoid the need for joint replacement for up to 5 years according to the clinical data.”

Spring often brings a sense of renewal. As the days become lighter and routines begin to shift, it can also be a natural time to reflect on how things are going at home.
For many families, winter can be challenging. Reduced mobility, fewer outings, and increased isolation can all have an impact. By spring, you may begin to notice small changes. A loved one might seem less confident, more forgetful, or find everyday tasks more tiring than before.
These changes are often gradual, but they can leave you wondering what to do next.
Support at home does not need to be a big step. For many families, it begins simply.
Some people start with a little help around the home. Others begin

with companionship visits, giving their loved one someone to talk to, share time with, or enjoy a short walk together.
At Caremark Bromley & Lewisham, care is built around each individual. It fits naturally into existing routines, preferences, and lifestyles, so life continues to feel familiar and comfortable. What often starts as a small amount of support can make a meaningful difference. Confidence begins to return. Daily routines feel easier. Families feel reassured knowing someone reliable is there.
A common concern is that introducing care means losing independence. In reality, the opposite is often true.
The right support helps people stay independent for longer. It provides just enough assistance to reduce risk, maintain routine, and support wellbeing, without taking away control.
We recently supported a family who had begun to notice their mum becoming quieter and less active during the winter months. Starting with just a few visits each week, she gradually became more engaged, more confident, and more like herself again.
For her family, the difference was clear. The worry eased, replaced with reassurance.
Spring is a natural time for small, positive changes. Care does not have to be introduced in response to a crisis. It can begin gently, at the right pace, and grow only if needed.
If you have started to notice small changes, having a conversation early can help you understand what support might look like. Sometimes, it is the smallest step that makes the biggest difference.

Few brands in the world command the instant recognition and reverence of Rolex. Synonymous with precision, prestige and permanence, Rolex has spent more than a century redefining what a wristwatch can represent. From the waterproof ingenuity of the Oyster case in 1926 to the pioneering Perpetual rotor that changed automatic watchmaking forever, Rolex has consistently set the benchmark for innovation. Its timepieces have scaled Everest, dived to record ocean depths and graced the wrists of cultural icons, world leaders and sporting legends.
Yet beyond its technical mastery lies something more powerful: emotional longevity. A Submariner, Day-Date or Datejust is rarely just a purchase; it marks milestones, celebrates achievement and often becomes a family heirloom. Rolex’s enduring design language — refined, recognisable, uncompromising — ensures that each piece remains as relevant decades from now as it is today.
Of course, a watch built to last generations deserves equally careful stewardship. That’s where trusted local expertise becomes invaluable.

In the heart of Bexley Village, Pilkington Jewellers Ltd has been quietly serving its community since 1970. This established, family-run jeweller understands that luxury watches are not merely accessories, but investments and sentimental treasures. Offering professional watch servicing, strap adjustments and battery replacements — often carried out while you wait — Pilkington’s combines convenience with craftsmanship. More detailed repairs are handled with meticulous attention, ensuring treasured timepieces continue to perform flawlessly.
Beyond watch care, Pilkington Jewellers provides a full suite of jewellery services, from bespoke commissions to repairs and restorations. Their approachable, knowledgeable team offers something increasingly rare: personal service grounded in decades of experience.
Rolex may be a global symbol of excellence, but its legacy lives on through the hands that maintain it. In Bexley Village, Pilkington Jewellers ensures that every tick continues with precision — preserving not just the mechanics of time, but the stories it carries.

At Kolle Interiors, we believe design goes beyond the pursuit of beauty. It is about creating spaces that feel intuitive, thoughtfully considered, and in harmony with the way you live. A home should reflect your story with understated elegance, welcoming both comfort and character.
Every project begins with a thoughtful understanding of you. How you live, what inspires you, and what defines a sense of home. From this foundation, we carefully develop a design that reflects your individuality, whether it’s a London penthouse, a countryside residence, or a contemporary city apartment. Each fabric, finish, and furnishing is selected with intention, ensuring the result feels considered and deeply personal.
For us, luxury extends far beyond appearance. It lies in the experience of living within a space. The

way lighting shapes atmosphere, the tactile quality of materials, and the natural flow of a well-planned layout all play an essential role. Our aim is to create interiors that feel calm, balanced, and effortlessly functional. We are equally committed to longevity in design. Not only in terms of quality, but in aesthetic relevance. By favouring timeless elements, natural materials, and enduring craftsmanship, we create spaces that evolve gracefully over time and remain as compelling as they are comfortable.
At Kolle Interiors, the focus remains firmly on creating spaces that are as liveable as they are beautiful. Each interior is thoughtfully designed to support everyday life, offering a sense of comfort, refinement, and quiet individuality.
Ultimately, true luxury is not defined by excess, but by the feeling a space evokes from the moment you walk through the door.

In an industry often driven by trends and quick visual impact, BD Interiors takes a more thoughtful path—one rooted in emotion, longevity and deeply personal design. Led by Billy Dennis, whose career spans more than two decades, this boutique studio offers something increasingly rare: a calm, considered approach where the client’s lifestyle is always at the centre. Based in Bromley and working across London, Kent and Surrey, BD Interiors serves clients who value not just how their home looks, but how it feels to live in. Their philosophy, “We Design a Feeling,” is more than a tagline—it’s a guiding principle. Each project begins with understanding the rhythms, preferences and personality of the people who will inhabit the space. The result is not a showcase of passing styles, but interiors that feel instinctively right from the moment you walk in. What sets BD Interiors apart is the seamless nature of their service. From interior design and spatial planning to kitchen and bathroom design, interior architecture and full project management. Everything is handled under one roof. This integrated approach ensures clarity, consistency and a level of detail that is often lost when multiple parties are involved.

Billy Dennis brings his extensive experience to every project personally, shaping each decision with a designer’s eye and a listener’s sensitivity. Clients are not guided toward a signature “look,” but rather toward a space that reflects who they are and how they live. The outcome is timeless rather than trendled—homes that evolve gracefully and continue to resonate for years to come.
In a world where so much design feels formulaic, BD Interiors offers a refreshing alternative: interiors created with intention, care and genuine understanding.

PROUDLY AWARDED UK'S BEST GARDEN CENTRE 2025

There are so many types and styles of picture lights available to buy now and unfortunately most of them do not follow the essential components required to light art well. Some are low cost and others can be very expensive, but both will light art poorly. You can recognise these by experiencing the following sub-standard results:
• O ver lit at the top
• Little or no light coverage further down or at the sides to become Under lit everywhere else
• Glare points on the canvas
• Damaging heat, glare & UV from the lightsource
• Frequent lamp changes
• High running costs
Many lamp types are used in picture lights such as candles, G9 Capsules & 221mm/284mm S15 lamps and they don’t light art well. They have been selected for use in picture lights because of their size rather than their performance.
To truly light art well and gain the most from your picture lights the following points must be insisted on:
Colour Temperature: A warm white light (2,700K is ideal)
Colour Rendering Index:A high CRI is required to bring out the rich colours, definition & brush strokes in the paintings. Insist on >95 CRI.
Head Size, Arm Position & LED Spacing and Lensing: These 3 dynamics must work together to gain the best coverage across the canvas. For example, when lighting a ½ portrait size painting (50”x 40”). This can be done with a smaller head if it has the correctly sized arms and the configuration of lensing and spacing is correct. This can also be lit with a larger head with shorter arms and a different configuration of lighting. The arms need to be calculated to give the correct elevation & projection for the head size. Swivel knuckles should be present to gain the desired head position and angle. This will shield the LED source and remove any glare. Lighting Levels: Each picture light should be supplied with its own dedicated dimmer to ensure correct levels are achieved. Over lighting can be just as bad as under lighting and a painting’s ideal light level will depend on its content, colours and brush strokes.
If you have a picture light and are not happy with the light coverage from it, there is now a quick & easy option to upgrade it and dramatically improve the light coverage across your painting. These kits are sized to fit into your existing head with correctly spaced and lensed LEDs to cover the required canvas size. They come with a dimming kit and properly sized arms.
We recently upgraded the picture lighting in the Long Gallery at Castle Howard using this technology and you can see how the art collection stands out now.

With bathroom design specialists, Ripples.
The shower has quietly become one of the most considered spaces in the modern bathroom. No longer purely functional, it’s now a place to reset, recharge and begin or end the day with intention. When designing a shower that truly works, it’s less about trends and more about creating a space that reflects your lifestyleboth now and in the years to come. Here, Roan Kelly, owner at Ripples Tunbridge Wells, explains how thoughtful design can turn a practical necessity into a beautifully considered part of the home.
For those with busy, fast-paced routines, simplicity is key. A well-designed walk-in shower with minimal framing, clean lines and intuitive controls offers ease without compromising on style. Larger-format tiles or seamless wall panels can reduce visual clutter, creating a calm and cohesive look, while recessed niches keep everyday essentials neatly stored but always within reach. Pairing this with a rainfall shower head and a separate handset gives flexibility for both quick mornings and slower, more indulgent evenings, a small but impactful detail that enhances daily use.
If relaxation is a priority, the modern shower can be elevated into a spa-like sanctuary. Wellness has become a defining influence in bathroom design, with more homeowners looking to recreate the restorative benefits of a spa within their own home. Features such as steam functionality, body jets and built-in seating can transform daily rituals into moments of calm and restoration. Steam showers, in particular, offer both physical and

“A

mental benefits, helping to ease muscle tension, improve circulation and create a sense of total relaxation at the end of a long day. Alongside this, innovations such as a Sunshower are becoming increasingly sought after. Combining gentle infrared heat with low-level UV light, a Sunshower can support muscle recovery, promote wellbeing and provide a subtle mood boost, all within the comfort of your own shower space. When paired with chromotherapy lighting, which uses colour to influence mood and energy levels, the result is a truly immersive experience. Soft, warm tones can help you unwind in the evening, while cooler hues can energise you in the morning, allowing your bathroom to adapt to your routine.
Materials play an essential role in achieving this sense of quiet luxury. Soft stone tones,

textured tiles and warm metallic finishes help to create a space that feels both timeless and comforting. Natural-inspired palettes, paired with tactile surfaces, add depth and interest without overwhelming the design. Lighting, too, should be carefully considered. Integrated, dimmable lighting allows you to shift the atmosphere effortlessly, creating a bright, functional space when needed or a softer, more ambient setting for relaxation.
Family bathrooms, on the other hand, benefit from durability and adaptability. Thermostatic controls are essential for safety, ensuring consistent water temperatures, while easy-clean surfaces and practical layouts make the space suitable for multiple users. A slightly larger enclosure or wet room-style layout allows for greater flexibility, particularly as needs change over time. The goal is to create a space that feels just as considered as a luxury ensuite, while working seamlessly for everyday family life. Accessibility is also an increasingly important consideration, and one that can be integrated beautifully into the overall design. Level-access showers, often referred to as wet rooms, provide a smooth, step-free entry that feels both practical and elegant. Thoughtfully positioned grab rails, fold-down seating and slip-resistant flooring can all be incorporated in a way that complements the wider aesthetic. By planning for these elements from the outset, the space remains future-proofed without ever feeling clinical.

Ultimately, the most successful shower spaces are those that strike a balance between beauty and practicality. By thinking carefully about how you use your bathroom, whether that’s a quick start to the day, a place to unwind, or a space shared with family, you can create a shower that not only looks exceptional but enhances everyday living in a meaningful way.

“Wellness has become a defining influence in bathroom design, with more homeowners looking to recreate the restorative benefits of a spa within their own home”

Over the past decade, the British garden has evolved from a simple green space into a fully realised extension of the home. What was once reserved for patios and occasional summer gatherings has transformed into a yearround outdoor living environment — complete with kitchens, lounge areas, fire features and increasingly, statement swimming pools.

Homeowners are no longer designing gardens purely for planting and aesthetics. Instead, they are creating immersive spaces for relaxation, entertainment and wellbeing. At the centre of this shift is water — with larger, architecturally integrated pools becoming the defining feature of modern outdoor design.
The Garden as an Extension of the Home
Today’s outdoor spaces are planned with the same level of detail as interior rooms. Designers and architects now approach the garden as a continuation of the house, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor living.
Large sliding glass doors, level terraces and seamless flooring transitions allow the interior to flow directly into the landscape. Pools are often positioned as focal points, creating visual connections between living areas and the garden beyond.
Rather than being tucked away, the pool becomes a central architectural element — reflecting light, enhancing views and structuring the layout of the entire space.

The growing focus on health and wellbeing has also played a role in the rise of outdoor living. Swimming is increasingly seen as a daily lifestyle activity rather than a luxury reserved for holidays or gyms.
A private pool allows homeowners to incorporate movement, relaxation and hydrotherapy into everyday life. Combined with spa features, sun shelves and swim-jets, the modern garden becomes a place not only for entertainment but for restoration.
Another defining element of this new era is social living. Outdoor kitchens, dining terraces and poolside seating areas are designed to host family and friends throughout the warmer months. Pools anchor these spaces, creating atmosphere and a natural gathering point. Lighting, landscaping and materials all contribute to a cohesive design that feels both luxurious and welcoming.
As gardens continue to evolve, the integration of architecture, landscape design and water will become even more sophisticated. Smart technology, sustainable heating systems and energyefficient construction methods are already shaping the next generation of pools.
What remains constant, however, is the desire to create meaningful outdoor spaces — gardens that enhance everyday living while providing a private retreat from modern life.
In this new era of outdoor living, the pool is no longer an afterthought. It is the centrepiece.

Formerly the Polhill Arms in Halstead the building was painstakingly restored by the family who own Farningham Oak - long established Kent quality furniture retailers who started their original cottage industry working from an old farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors.
“We used to let the customers wander all over our house - except for a couple of rooms and buy anything they wanted and take it away” said Peter one of the Directors - it gave us a great insight into how good furniture is constructed and taught us all about the correct proportions and style which are really important skills and cannot be learned overnight.
This helps us tremendously when customers ask our advice as mistakes can be time consuming and expensive for them. he humble paddle and perforated ball are fast becoming as recognisable in UK parks as a football or tennis racket — and with good reason. Pickleball, a sport that blends the best of badminton, tennis and table tennis, has exploded in popularity across Britain. Once the preserve of a niche group of enthusiasts, it now attracts everyone from retirees seeking low-impact exercise, to families, to competitive social players. The sport’s inclusive nature — easy to pick up yet hard to master — has sparked the opening of dozens of new courts up and down the country.
In towns and cities, and increasingly in village halls and leisure centres, players can be spotted clicking across portable nets in everyone’s favourite new pastime. The appeal of pickleball lies in its accessibility. The court is smaller, the gear is inexpensive, and games are short and sociable. That mix has helped smash traditional barriers to participation, attracting people who may never have considered themselves “sports players”.
Behind this surge is a growing demand for quality playing surfaces, and that’s where Martin Gurr Tennis Courts has positioned itself at the heart of the movement. With decades of expertise in designing, installing and maintaining tennis
and multi-sport courts, Martin Gurr has extended its services to support the pickleball boom — offering tailored solutions to meet the needs of clubs, councils, schools and private clients.
What sets Martin Gurr apart is its comprehensive turnkey service. From initial site surveys and consultation, to court design, surface selection and precise line marking, every step is handled with professionalism and care. They supply bespoke permanent pickleball courts as well as adaptable solutions on existing tennis or multi-use surfaces — maximising both budget and space. Their installations use high-quality, weather-resilient materials designed to deliver consistent playability and longevity, and clients benefit from expert aftercare services including resurfacing and ongoing maintenance.
As local authorities and community organisations look to invest in facilities that promote participation and wellbeing, Martin Gurr’s consultative approach ensures that new installations are fit for purpose, sustainable and future-proofed. In a landscape where pickleball is rapidly becoming part of Britain’s sporting fabric, Martin Gurr Tennis Courts are helping to build the courts where memories — and rivalries — are made.

The showroom itself is something rather unique. Don’t deny it - we all saw it. Daylight. The first bountiful beams of sun poking through the clouds herald a wave of something we like to call the garden gaze. Those fleeting moments when you catch a glimpse of the space at the back of your home, almost as if it has suddenly appeared: a green, growing landmass you’re seeing for the very first time. Having almost forgotten it, one of the most important areas of your home is about to burst back into life. You utter to yourself, “We need to do something about the garden.”
But what does the modern garden look like? Well, as with every aspect of home design, it depends entirely on you. Still, we thought we’d give you a bit of a cheat sheet. So here are five templates to get you started in growing your style. Different aesthetics that, with the right furniture, will make your outdoor space the ultimate spring hosting spot and the perfect outdoor escape.
If one era of design that will forever have it’s time in the sunlight - metaphorically and physically - then mid-century is it. Classics of the genre have become icons of the present, so much so that outdoor versions of some of the world’s most
beloved designs are now cultivating stylish gardens and cropping up in spaces far beyond even the brilliant imaginations of Eames and Saarinen could have predicted.
Take one of the old masters: Cassina’s Fauteuil Grand Comfort (the sofa formerly known as LC3) is a seating solution that has shaped some of the suavest settings this side of the ’50s, now allowing people to bask in its natural charisma beyond four walls - and beyond the 20th century.

We’re a bit bonkers about our gardens in this country. With a staggering 85% of us living in urbanised areas, you can understand why we love our personal patches of land so much. It’s likely why the RHS Chelsea Flower Show attracts over 140,000 horticulture enthusiasts each year, all eager to gaze upon its creative floral dioramas. But what makes a stereotypical UK outdoor space? As most of our parents would likely tell us: big flowers, winding trees, about forty forgotten gardening gloves and, of course, enough furniture to fit the entire street when BBQ season comes around.
We find that looking a little further afield and investing in some stunning Scandi furniture, like Gubi or Cane-line, suits the eloquence of the Great British garden perfectly.
Synonymous with good weather, good food andmost importantly - a healthier work/life balance. When you think of a part of the world where people truly know how to enjoy the outdoors, your mind instinctively heads off to Stansted and lands somewhere closer to the equator. If you’re lucky, somewhere on the Mediterranean Sea. So why not bring a slice of the sun a little closer to home? Bring a bold colour palette, break out the good wine and get ready for dining al fresco. Create a modern Mediterranean garden with brands like B&B Italia, Flexform and Foscarini opening up your options all the way from Italy.
We’ve seen Scandinavian furniture making surprise appearances across the blog so far - so what’s one more? Well, this time it’s taking more of a starring role. Japandi is a clean-yet-stylish interior design

movement that has dominated minimalist abodes for the better part of the 21st century. Now, like all good aesthetics, it has slipped out the back door and settled into the gardens of design fans. Warm timbers, gravel beds and sparsely but thoughtfully placed plant life are the ways to harness the power of both Nordic hygge and Japanese wabi-sabi. When it comes to furnishing your extravagancefree exterior, look to Scandi design brands Carl Hansen and &Tradition, which make a stylish statement at whisper level.
This wouldn’t be a blog about future-proofing your own personal paradise without saving the most relevant of these options for last: futuristic furniture. Characteristics like sleek angles and monochromatic tones define this trend of near scifi futurism. Think the beachfronts of Ibiza meeting the defined lines of the ultra-modern world.
Brands like Vondom and Gandia Blasco encapsulate this polished aesthetic with perfection. Blending with sea, sun and sand alike, this is ideal for warmer weather environments. chaplins.co.uk

For two decades, Oliver James Furniture has quietly built a reputation across the South East for craftsmanship that feels both personal and enduring. In an age of mass production and fast interiors, the company stands apart by offering something increasingly rare: truly bespoke furniture, designed and made with care from the very first sketch to the final installation.
At the heart of Oliver James Furniture is a simple philosophy—homes should reflect the people who live in them. This belief is most evident in their bespoke kitchens, where thoughtful design meets precise manufacturing. Each project begins as a conversation, evolves through careful planning, and is brought to life by skilled hands. The result is not just a kitchen, but a space tailored to how clients cook, gather, and live.

Yet the company’s expertise extends far beyond kitchens. From elegant studies and practical boot rooms to beautifully crafted wardrobes, Oliver James Furniture approaches every commission with the same level of attention and pride. No two pieces are identical, because no two homes—or homeowners—are the same.
What truly defines the business, however, is its commitment to customer care. Clients are guided through every stage of the journey, from concept and design to manufacture, delivery, and installation. Even after completion, the relationship continues, reflecting a genuine dedication to ongoing support and satisfaction.
There is also a quiet confidence in their approach. “If you can think of it, we can make it” is not a boast, but a reflection of experience, adaptability, and deep technical knowledge. It’s a friendly assurance backed by years of craftsmanship and a willingness to listen.
After 20 years serving the South East, Oliver James Furniture remains rooted in its values: quality, integrity, and personal service. In every detail—seen and unseen—they demonstrate that bespoke furniture is not just about how something looks, but how it is made, and how it makes people feel in the spaces they call home. www.oliverjamesfurniture.co.uk
