The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present

OTHELLO

Rothamsted Manor, Sunday 7 June 7pm

This summer The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, described by the Yorkshire Post as “the best authentic Shakespearean experience” return to Rothamsted Manor in Harpenden on Sunday 7th June to present one of the most captivating and thrilling plays ever written, Othello.

Leading proponents of open air theatre for more than two decades and with a history stretching back to William Shakespeare’s original company, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present this great play as Shakespeare first saw it – in the open air, with an all male cast and Elizabethan costumes, music and dance.

For this unique theatrical experience, audiences are encouraged to bring a chair and a picnic and to book early as this authentic, excellent and magical show is likely to sell out as their production of Twelfth Night did at Rothamsted Manor last year. Acclaimed for their stylish and accessible productions

The Lord Chamberlain’s Men have been wowing audiences throughout the country and internationally in their trademark style since 2005. Continually raising the bar for standards in open air theatre they have gone from strength to strength.

Looking forward to the production Artistic Director and Producer of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Peter Stickney said, “Othello is a stunning and spellbinding play. It is the first time in the modern company’s history that we have tackled it and I cannot wait. It is a thriller from start to

finish and once the play begins it doesn’t let up for a moment. The show is a real rollercoaster - full of twists and turns and is compelling, heartbreakingly poignant and utterly electric. It is a sensational story and one you won’t want to miss.

This production of Othello is part of a 16-week UK and international tour that will call at some of the most beautiful and historically significant venues including Kingston Lacy, Norwich Cathedral and Conwy Castle as well as internationally renowned theatre festivals including Salisbury International Arts Festival, Craiova International Shakespeare Festival, Romania and the Welttheater Festival - Art Carnuntum, Austria.

Saatchi Gallery at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

19 – 23 May 2026

Saatchi Gallery is to present its garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 in collaboration with kinetic artist Lucy Gregory, garden designer Naomi FerrettCohen, and supporter ING.

Created for Saatchi Gallery’s sixth collaboration with the internationally acclaimed Flower Show, the 2026 design brings together contemporary art, thoughtful planting and public participation. The project is supported by ING, whose commitment to advancing sustainable practice and supporting cultural initiatives reflects a shared belief in the value of nature, creativity and collective responsibility.

Guests are invited to venture down the garden path into a surreal environment of interactive, anthropomorphic tree-like structures that hug the space. As visitors push the sculptures into motion, they trigger a joyful, spiralling dance that gradually settles into a playful, slapstick wobble as momentum slows. The garden celebrates the simple pleasure of gathering together outdoors such as in a park or meadow, and the positive

effect nature can have on us.

Gregory was inspired by the energy and rhythm of Matisse’s The Dance, a scene depicting figures entirely lost in the moment within the landscape. She translates the painting’s iconic arabesque into a vibrant, abstract spinning choreography in steel. In Matisse’s composition, two hands have slipped apart, creating a subtle tension within the circle; here, Gregory invites the public to close the circle that Matisse left open by physically reconnecting the cartoon-like hands, reactivating the dance through touch.

The motif of the circle underpins the entire garden. The path twists, foliage unfolds and sculptural forms reveal in a sense of child-like discovery. The sculptural arms envelop, guide and usher visitors through the space. As they glide through greenery, they recall the universal memory of walking through a meadow, trailing fingers through long grasses.

Gregory explains, “Roundness operates

Lucy Gregory, The Applause Machine
Lucy Gregory, The Blame Game

conceptually as well as physically, interweaving themes of community, interconnection with nature and the body in the landscape.” The recent artist’s residency she took part in, entitled Body and Place, explored the body within natural settings through life drawing outdoors and through movement.

“These studies became a melting pot of ideas for new kinetic figurative works situated directly in the landscape.”

Gregory’s practice upturns the traditional ‘look, don’t touch’ mentality instead, encouraging play and curiosity through interaction with the artworks. The viewer becomes the engine, activator and performer, intertwined with the work itself, as they bring the sculptures to life through participation and touch.

Inspired by mechanical toys, Victorian automatons and early animation devices, she constructs large-scale figurative ‘kinetic collages’, where abstracted ‘cutouts’ or black and white imagery are mounted on engineered steel frames. The forms move through spinning axles, swinging pendulums and subtle shifts in balance to emphasise a certain gesture, action or movement and to re-imagine the human form in, a often humorous, collision bodies and machines.

Naomi Ferrett-Cohen’s planting design brings warmth and vibrancy to the space, with a colourful

palette that complements the bold backdrop. An award-winning designer working across Sussex, Surrey and London, she is known for creating naturalistic gardens with strong structure and clarity. Here, her scheme ensures that sculpture and planting sit in dynamic balance, each heightening the presence of the other.

Presented at RHS Chelsea from 19 - 23 May 2026, and realised with the support of ING, the design offers an invitation to step into movement, to reconnect with nature and with one another, and to complete the circle together.

Sinatra The Musical

Aldwych Theatre, London. Book now at SinatraMusical.com. Performances begin 3 June

The Voice. The Scandal. The Greatest Comeback In Showbiz History.

New Year’s Eve, 1942. A skinny, 27-year-old Italian-American steps onto the stage of New York City’s Paramount Theatre - and everything changes. The screaming crowd, the swooning teenagers, the voice that seemed to reach right inside you and squeeze. In that one electric night, Frank Sinatra didn’t just perform. He became a legend.

Now, that extraordinary story is coming to the West End, and if you’ve ever loved a Sinatra song, this is the show you’ve been waiting for.

Sinatra The Musical arrives at London’s Aldwych Theatre this June, brought to life by a world-class creative team including two-time Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro and Olivier Award-

winning director Kathleen Marshall. Together, they’ve crafted a musical that’s as emotionally gripping as it is gloriously entertaining.

At its heart, this is a love story - or rather, two of them. As Frank’s star blazes across America, his heart is torn between his loyal first wife Nancy (played by Phoebe Panaretos) and the smouldering Hollywood goddess Ava Gardner (Ana Villafañe). When scandal strikes and a hostile press turns on him, it looks like the dream might be over. What follows is the most thrilling comeback show business has ever seen.

Joel Harper-Jackson steps into those iconic shoes as Frank himself - and the music is everything you’d hope for. Over twenty timeless classics filling the stage, from That’s Life and One For My Baby to The Best Is Yet To Come and I’ve Got The World On A String.

You know every song. Now it’s time to discover the remarkable man behind them. sinatramusical.com

Hertforshire’s love affair with the RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Several recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show winners have strong Hertfordshire connections, particularly through landscaping firms and designers based in the county.

One of the best-known is Kate Gould Gardens, led by award-winning designer Kate Gould. Based in Radlett, Kate has become one of the most successful Chelsea designers of recent years, winning multiple RHS Gold Medals as well as “Best in Show” and category awards. Her practice specialises in lush urban gardens and contemporary outdoor spaces across London and the South East.

Kate Gould’s Chelsea successes include the 2017 “City Living” garden, which won both a Gold Medal and Best Fresh Garden. The design explored how green spaces could be integrated into dense urban environments, using layered planting and wildlife-friendly ideas. In 2022, her garden “Out of the Shadows” won a Gold Medal, Best Sanctuary Garden and Best Construction award, praised for its calming atmosphere and climate-conscious planting.

Another Hertfordshire success story is Landesigns, the specialist landscaping company founded by Ben Wiggins. Based in Hemel Hempstead, the company has helped construct several RHS Chelsea medal-winning gardens in recent years, earning recognition for high-quality craftsmanship and sustainable landscaping. Their projects have included Gold Medal-winning gardens and RHS Environmental Innovation Award winners.

Hertfordshire has also been linked to the studio Hudson De Maeijer, run by Jane and Erik Hudson De Maeijer. The practice, operating between

Hertfordshire and London, has exhibited several RHS Chelsea gardens and become known for naturalistic planting and contemporary landscape design.

Beyond the county itself, influential Chelsea winners continue to inspire Hertfordshire designers. Andy Sturgeon won Best Show Garden in 2019 with “The M&G Garden,” while in 2024 Ula Maria won Best Show Garden for the “Muscular Dystrophy UK – Forest Bathing Garden.” Their work reflects modern Chelsea themes such as biodiversity, wellbeing and climate resilience.

Together, these award-winning designers and businesses have helped establish Hertfordshire as an important centre for innovative garden design and landscaping linked to Britain’s most prestigious flower show.

HERTFORSHIRE FLOWER NURSERIES ARE STARTING TO BLOOM

Hertfordshire is well known for its excellent flower nurseries and garden centres, offering everything from seasonal bedding plants to specialist roses, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental trees. Across the county, gardeners can find both large established centres and smaller independent nurseries that focus on high-quality plants and expert advice. These nurseries play an important role in supporting local horticulture and encouraging gardening throughout the region.

Among the most popular destinations is Aylett Nurseries in St Albans, one of Hertfordshire’s best-known garden centres. It is famous for its colourful seasonal displays, Christmas events, and wide selection of flowers and garden plants. The nursery has built a strong reputation for quality and customer service over many years.

Another respected nursery is Shantock Nurseries Ltd near Hemel Hempstead. This family-run nursery is particularly appreciated for its healthy plants, hanging baskets, and friendly atmosphere. Local gardeners often visit for spring and summer flowering plants as well as practical gardening advice.

Specialist nurseries are also an important part of Hertfordshire’s gardening culture. Leafy Oak Nursery near Ware offers a wide range of plants and shrubs, while Daisy Roots in Hertford specialises in hardy perennials and ornamental

grasses. Daisy Roots has even won RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medals for its displays and plant quality.

Other notable businesses include Vanstone Park Garden Centre in Codicote, The Hertfordshire Garden Centre near Redbourn, and Four Acres Nursery near Berkhamsted. These nurseries stock a wide variety of flowers, trees, herbs, and decorative plants suitable for gardens of all sizes.

Hertfordshire also supports independent florists and flower farms such as Flos Flower Farm which provide locally grown flowers and bespoke floral arrangements.

Harkness Roses, based in Hitchin, has earned an international reputation for developing healthy and colourful rose varieties. The company has been producing roses since the nineteenth century and remains closely associated with British horticulture. Historically, the county was also home to the famous Rivers Nursery, which became known for introducing long-flowering roses and cultivating thousands of fruit trees during its peak years.

Overall, Hertfordshire flower nurseries combine tradition, expertise, and creativity. Whether customers are experienced gardeners or beginners, these nurseries provide inspiration, expert knowledge, and beautiful plants that help gardens across the county flourish throughout the year.

Looking forward to warmer days at HITCHIN LAVENDER

Tickets on sale soon for June - August 2026

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

PLANTING & GROWING

Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

“Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long”

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK?

There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.

Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.

The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings.

Professional photography is allowed anytime during our general opening hours but is subject to an additional fee.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II: HER LIFE IN STYLE

The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace

During 2026, to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, The King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace plays host to the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of the late Queen’s fashion ever mounted.

Through approximately 200 items, around half on display for the first time, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style will chart the remarkable story of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch through clothing worn in all ten decades of her life: from birth to adulthood, from princess to queen, and from offduty style to diplomatic dressing for the global stage.

Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion archive is one of the largest and most important surviving

collections of 20th-century British fashion. Alongside clothing, jewellery, hats, shoes and accessories, visitors can discover never-before-seen design sketches, fabric samples and handwritten correspondence that reveal the behind-the-scenes process of dressing the most famous woman in the world and shed new light on the late Queen’s close involvement in the creation of her wardrobe.

From birth, Princess Elizabeth’s clothing was a topic of national fascination. On show for the first time will be one of the earliest surviving pieces of couture from her childhood wardrobe: the silver lamé and tulle bridesmaid dress, designed by Edward Molyneux, that she wore aged eight for the 1934 wedding of her uncle, the Duke of Kent,

As British couture rose to prominence in the 1940s, Princess Elizabeth began working with Norman Hartnell, who became her most influential designer over the next three decades. His position as Britain’s leading couturier was cemented when he was chosen to design her wedding dress in 1947 and her Coronation dress in 1953, both of which will be on display.

Eveningwear was a vital component of the Queen’s wardrobe, and visitors will see stunning examples that reflect the evolution of fashion trends throughout her long reign – from the crinoline-skirted gowns of the 1950s by Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amiesto fluid, vibrantly printed dresses by Ian Thomas that capture the relaxed glamour of the 1970s, on show for the first time. The exhibition will explore the Queen’s use of diplomatically significant emblems and colours in her wardrobe for overseas tours, as shown in an ingenious white gown designed by Norman Hartnell for a 1961 State Banquet in Karachi, which incorporates Pakistan’s national colours through a dramatic emerald-green pleat cascading down the back.

In her later years, Queen Elizabeth became as recognisable for her off-duty style and classic British tailoring as she was for her couture gowns. From impeccably cut riding jackets to tartan skirts and silk headscarves, visitors will see never-beforedisplayed examples other practical everyday style, which continues to inspire contemporary designers to this day.

Caroline de Guitaut, exhibition curator and Surveyor of The King’s Works of Art, said: ‘Over the course of Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkably long reign, her distinctive style became instantly recognisable around the world, bolstering the British fashion industry and influencing generations of designers and couturiers.”

“Only now, as the late Queen’s fashion archive comes under the care of Royal Collection Trust, can we tell the story of a lifetime of thoughtful

style choices – from her hands-on role and understanding of the soft power behind her clothing, to the exceptional craftsmanship behind each garment. In the year that she would have turned 100 years old, this exhibition will be a celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s uniquely British style and her enduring fashion legacy.”

An official publication to mark the centenary, Queen Elizabeth II: Fashion and Style, will accompany the exhibition. Written by the exhibition curator Caroline de Guitaut and featuring contributions by fashion experts and designers, the book will explore the late Queen’s fashion archive and her lifelong championing of the British fashion industry in unprecedented detail. SThe Fair that Invented

‘Decorative Antiques’

40

Years at the forefront of the interiors world

trends, but the Fair has adapted to changing tastes: it was the first antiques Fair to include mid-century and post-modern design, and contemporary art, and it has never chucked out the chintz. It was also the first major Fair to take place in a tent, when it located to Chelsea Harbour in the early 1990s. And it has remained in its current home, Battersea Park, since 1997, albeit in a sturdier structure than canvas.

ince its inception in September 1985, The Decorative Fair has led the way in bringing together the world of interior design and antiques. In the sales booklet for the first Fair, talking about the then existing fairs scene the founder, antiques dealer Patricia Harvey, said: “to a certain extent, interior designers have been neglected. There has until now been no specialist setting in which designers can meet dealers… and where their particular needs are understood and catered to.”

The growth in the 1980s of the interior decorating trade coincided with a trend for opulent and traditional interiors, after decades of postwar modernism. Decorators were hunting for a great variety of antiques with strong visual impact alongside purist collectors’ items, at realistic prices. Although they didn’t know it yet, what they were hunting for became known as ‘decorative antiques’.

The launch of ‘The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair’ (its original name) tapped in to that demand, and was a welcome initiative. Exhibitors were positively encouraged to be creative with their stand displays to inspire buyers; textiles were experiencing a boom in interest, with the ‘full’ country house look of swags and tails (plus ruched blinds) at the windows, chintz-covered squashy sofas loaded with cushions, and the fad for fabricdraped side tables at its apogee. Designers and decorators embraced the event, as did their clients, who came to shop in their droves.

There had never been an antiques fair like it – and today the event still leads the way for the interiors trade.

By their very nature, antiques do not follow

THE DECORATIVE FAIR

Venue: Evolution London, Battersea Park, London SW11 4NJ decorativefair.com @decorativefair

The Decorative Fair is now the longest running and largest antiques, design and art event of its kind in the UK. Its success lies in the affection it engenders in all who visit, take part in and organise the Fair, many of whom have been involved since the very first event. Members of the organising team and many suppliers have been involved for over 20 years.

The sense of excitement is what brings clients – and exhibitors – back time and again. The Fair embraces dealers that specialise in such a very wide range of stock, from textiles and lighting, glass and ceramics, fine art and painted antiques to unusual disciplines such as ethnographic art, antiquities, natural history objects, garden antiques and industrial furniture.

Today the offering is more diverse than ever. With 130 exhibitors coming from across the UK and Europe, the event prides itself on the quality and breadth of the stock for sale. It is a Fair which provides every kind of decoration for indoors and out, from the fine to the fun, and at prices to suit every pocket. It attracts tastemakers and stylists hunting for the eccentric and unusual alongside the classic and traditional.

SUMMER AT COSY CLUB

Come find a table. Stay. There’s a particular quality to a Cosy Club afternoon in summer. The light hits just right. Olives arrive, as they should. A bottle gets ordered before anyone’s officially decided. Lunch stretches, conversations loosen, and suddenly no one’s checking the time. Come for lunch. See where it goes.

A fresh summer menu

The new summer menu is made for unhurried moments. Think golden, crispy buttermilk chicken topped with a free-range egg and finished with a flourish of truffle. Or herb-crusted salmon with a soft velouté and bright green vegetables – light, comforting and perfectly seasonal. It’s the sort of food that makes ordering another round feel like a very sensible decision.

Salad season, upgraded

Summer salads have arrived – and they don’t disappoint. The classic Caesar delivers every time: crisp leaves, smoky bacon, roasted chicken, a perfectly cooked egg and plenty of proper dressing. Add fries and it becomes that kind of

lunch. Balanced. Joyful. No notes. For something fresher and greener, bulgur wheat meets pickled green apple, tenderstem broccoli, peas and smashed cucumber. Fresh herbs, toasted sunflower seeds and honey yoghurt with preserved lemon vinaigrette bring crunch, brightness and serious flavour. Light yet satisfying, they’re made for warm afternoons that leave room for what might follow.

Dessert? Obviously.

Maybe something cool and coconutty with mango and lime. Maybe tiramisu, rich and coffee-soaked. Or a creamy mascarpone cheesecake with strawberries, mint and white chocolate. Share if you like. Or don’t. No judgement.

Martinis, naturally

As afternoon drifts into evening, the Cosy Club Martini Menu steps in. Clean, cold and perfectly made. Classic, dirty or with a crisp pickled twist. Gin or vodka. Entirely your call. Pull up a chair. Order something delicious. Stay as long as you like. Endless Summer starts at Cosy Club. cosyclub.co.uk

Verulam House Care Home

Supporting Residents Through Change with Care and Compassion

THE DETAILS

To find out more, call 01727 853991 or visit Verulam House, Verulam Road, St Albans Hertfordshire, AL3 4DH. No appointment necessary. Alternatively, visit verulamhousecarehome.co.uk

When news broke that Lyndon House Residential Home in Sandridge, St Albans, was fated to close its doors, the urgent search began to find new accommodation for its residents, who had essentially been made homeless. For many, the uncertainty was deeply unsettling, making it all the more important to find a place where they would feel safe, valued and truly at home.

The closing home’s deputy manager, Ebony Leonard, understood just how emotional and challenging this time would be. Determined to ensure continuity of care, she was committed to finding a home that would offer the same love, kindness and high standards residents had come to rely on over the years.

Ebony reached out to Neil Copping, home manager at Verulam House Care Home. “I was immediately reassured by his kindness, knowledge and professionalism,” she said. “He visited us, meeting with me, residents and colleagues, before we visited Verulam House.

“I was impressed in every aspect. Neil and his team handled the situation with genuine compassion, making what could have been a very difficult process feel reassuring and supportive.”

Two residents, Brenda and Val, made the move

to Verulam House and both settled in extremely well. Neil Copping commented, “We were delighted to be able to offer a new home to two local residents who faced the distressing situation of their home closing. Working closely with the home’s caring team, we ensured a seamless transition for Brenda and Val, and they were warmly welcomed into the Verulam family.”

The positive impact has been clear. Ebony shared, “We went to visit Brenda and Val, and team members came back with tears in their eyes as they were so happy to see how well loved and looked after they both were.”

She added, “Honestly, as a collective we have been to all of the care homes in the area and nothing compares to Verulam. It is a genuinely lovely home with a warm, homely atmosphere and an exceptionally kind, caring and patient team. I highly recommend.”

Verulam House, an early 19th-century Grade II listed building in the heart of St Albans, has been beautifully converted into a care home for nearly 20 years. Offering residential, respite, palliative and nursing care, as well as specialist support for physical disability and sensory impairment, it is proudly rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission across all five key areas.

Verulam House is an award-winning care home in central St Albans, offering exceptional, residential, nursing, palliative and respite care. Set in a beautiful period property, the home blends historic charm with modern comforts. Ideally located, its just a short walk from the iconic St Albans Abbey Cathedral and picturesque Verulamium Park. Woodlands Nursery: An Award-Winning Start at Beechwood Park

Set within the beautiful grounds of Beechwood Park School, near St Albans in Hertfordshire, Woodlands Nursery offers young children an early educational experience that feels both nurturing and purposeful. Designed as the first stage of the Beechwood Park journey, it combines warmth, confidence and imaginative learning in an environment where children are encouraged to explore, question and grow from the very beginning.

That approach has received significant recognition: in 2025, Woodlands Nursery was named one of the Top 20 Nurseries in the East of England by daynurseries.co.uk, an award based on verified parent reviews and overall satisfaction scores.

Purpose-built and positioned beside the woodland edge of the school’s extensive site, Woodlands makes exceptional use of its surroundings. Bright classrooms open directly onto dedicated outdoor spaces, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor learning throughout the day. Gardens, play areas and nature-rich surroundings become part of daily life, helping children develop curiosity, resilience and a strong connection with the world around them.

For children from the term in which they turn three, the nursery offers a carefully balanced

programme that blends creative play with early academic foundations. Communication, language, number awareness and social development are woven naturally into each day so that learning feels joyful rather than formal. The emphasis is always on building confidence and independence, ensuring children are fully prepared for their transition into Reception.

Parents frequently highlight the atmosphere created by the staff team, whose experience and close attention to each child are central to nursery life. One recent review described Woodlands as “a truly special place”, adding that “the staff, facilities, and the nurturing nature are all reasons why my son is thriving.”

As part of the wider school, children also benefit from facilities rarely available at nursery level, helping Woodlands feel both intimate and expansive at once.

For families considering the perfect start to their child’s education, we warmly invite you to experience Woodlands Nursery firsthand - either on a Personal Tour or at our next Open Morning on 15th May. See for yourself why children thrive here, in an environment that is nurturing, inspiring, and full of possibility.

PREPPED FOR LIFE

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School, set in 15 acres of leafy grounds in Northwood, delivers the best of both worlds: a strong academic tradition with an extensive range of co-curricular and sporting activities. Located just minutes from Merchant Taylors’ senior school, it provides an excellent all-through option for high-achieving pupils.

The new Head, Miles Chester, who joined in September, brings extensive experience and a fresh, dynamic approach to the school. He is proud of the prep school’s quality of teaching and the holistic education it offers. “Through an enriched curriculum, we foster every opportunity for pupils to develop their individual potential, nurturing their unique passions, interests and aspirations. The foundation we provide ensures they are equipped with the skills and confidence to transition seamlessly to senior school,” said Mr. Chester.

The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos. From the very beginning, teachers take the time to get to know each pupil and their abilities, within a small-class setting. This allows enquiring minds to develop in an

environment where each pupil is given a sense of belonging that helps them to achieve.

Through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs and activities, boys are encouraged to try new things and explore their talents and creativity. The school uses sport to reinforce its ethos and to instil discipline, teamwork, fair play, responsibility and respect.

Having the senior school nearby offers numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in sports, music and academics. With pupils now transitioning to senior school at the end of Year 6, the school is expanding its intake for Year 3 from September 2026. “This is a great opportunity for able pupils with potential to join our school and benefit from a well-balanced education and smooth transition to the senior school”, Mr Chester added.

FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:

Across many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions.

This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top.

In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity.

Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can

WHO GETS AHEAD?

play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors.

“The

higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system.

As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background – and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

The 11+ Process: An Opportunity, Not an Ordeal

The 11+ process is over for another year. Across the country, families have been discovering whether their child has secured a place at Senior School. It has gained a reputation as one of the most stressful periods in a child’s education. I find this puzzling. The process is a valuable opportunity. It allows children to begin understanding who they are, and what school will support them into the future.

Sarum Hall School has enjoyed another highly successful 11+ this year, with every child receiving an offer from at least one of their preferred schools.

Perhaps the first challenge is one of perception. The 11+ should be seen as an opportunity, not an ordeal. This is a time when children can explore “big schools” for the first time - peeking through the keyhole into their future. Children approach this process with excitement; parents should do the same.

Things formally begin in the Summer Term of Year 5, with Open Days. These occasions showcase schools at their very best. Parents should keep an open mind. Visit a wide range of schools and try to see them through your child’s eyes. Too often, parents make decisions shaped by their own educational experiences or expectations. Equally important is avoiding the idea of a “first choice.” Placing all hope on one school can lead to disappointment. Try to identify two or three schools you would be equally happy with, and the process becomes far more manageable. Staying calm and measured will set the tone for your child.

Remember, you are choosing not just for an 11-year-old, but for a future teenager. Children will soon crave independence. A slightly longer journey may well be worthwhile if the school is a better overall fit.

Focus will soon shift to applications. Here, clarity is essential: do not apply to too many schools. More examinations and interviews inevitably mean more pressure; examination fatigue is real!

A strong prep school will guide families through individual meetings, ensuring that applications

“Remember, you are choosing not just for an 11-year-old, but for a future teenager”

are both realistic and appropriate. Examinations follow in the Autumn Term of Year 6. By this stage, preparation should be the outcome of years of learning – a process that has developed since the earliest days of schooling. While some may consider tutoring, it is worth asking whether this is necessary. In most cases, it is not.

Next come interviews. These should be seen as natural conversations, not interrogations: an opportunity for children to express themselves. Results day will arrive in March and calmness is key. Avoid placing excessive emphasis on one day, as this can heighten anxiety. Schools typically communicate throughout the day - and your prep school should be on hand to support.

Ultimately, the 11+ process is not something to fear. It is a journey of discovery and opportunity. With the right mindset, it can be an enriching experience - for both children and their parents. sarumhallschool.co.uk

Preparing Young People for Life Beyond the Classroom

Education today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education.

Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers

Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination.

Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability – qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.

“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”

Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part of a team prepares students for real-world environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement.

Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends.

Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings.

By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

BENEFITS OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

With options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.

ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES

One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular

learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.

CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES

Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualized attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.

“91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”

DEDICATED TEACHERS

Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Private schools typically maintain clear expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.

AMPLE RESOURCES

Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. These activities help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, and social

skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.

“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”

PREPARATION FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD

Private schools often go beyond standard curriculum requirements by offering specialized programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.

Edge Grove Children Step Into the Spotlight for Short Film Production

Pupils at Edge Grove School near Radlett have had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic of filmmaking firsthand, as their school recently transformed into a live movie set.

Over the course of four days, classrooms, corridors, and outdoor spaces were brought to life by a Not Thought Through Productions shooting scenes for an upcoming movie, God of Mischief. A group of 16 pupils from the school were also invited to take part in the filming, giving them a unique behind-the-scenes insight into the world of cinema.

The movie, written, directed and starred in by Edge Grove Alumni Christian Stevens, tells the story of young Ed, a cheeky 10-year-old boy who sets his sights on playing Loki in the school play but his over-the-top confidence costs him the role, so he hatches a mischievous plan to prove he’s the real god of mischief after all.

The children worked alongside professional directors, camera operators, and actors, learning how scenes are created and the level of detail involved in producing a film. From multiple takes to costume changes and lighting adjustments, pupils gained a new appreciation for the teamwork, resilience and creativity required in filmmaking.

Mrs Allen, Director of Drama at Edge Grove, said: “This has been an incredible experience for our pupils. Not only was it exciting to see our school turned into a film set, but it also provided a valuable learning opportunity. The children were inspired, engaged, and showed great professionalism throughout.”

Christian Stevens, Director at Not Thought

Through Productions, said: “It was an honour to return to Edge Grove 11 years after leaving to create such a special film. Working with 16 of their pupils was a real pleasure, and I can’t wait to watch their careers flourish in the years to come. I could not have asked for a more talented, hard-working group of young actors. Thank you to the Edge Grove community for being so welcoming and supportive throughout the making of this film.”

Pupils were thrilled to be involved and for some, the experience has even sparked an interest in future careers within the film and creative industries.

The production team praised the students for their enthusiasm and behaviour, noting how quickly they adapted to the demands of filming.

Filming at the school highlights the growing connection between education and the creative industries, offering young people the chance to explore new opportunities and broaden their horizons.

The film is expected to be released in 2026, and the school community is eagerly anticipating seeing familiar faces and surroundings on the big screen.

COWSHED RETURNS: WITH A NEW ERA OF FRAGRANCE-FIRST BRITISH WELLNESS

The original British wellness rebel is back. Born in 1998 at Babington House in Somerset, Cowshed relaunches this spring with a bold new brand world rooted in fragrance, emotional uplift and unapologetic indulgence. This isn’t a refresh. It’s a reintroduction. One that reflects how people feel now –burnt out, over-optimised, and craving real, sensorial escape. Launched exclusively in Soho House spas and bathrooms from March, before a wider global release in May, the new Cowshed offers a refined, rebellious alternative to today’s often soulless, homogenous wellness landscape. A world of British botanicals, scentled moments, and everyday indulgences for bath, body and home – designed to live on show, not under the sink.

Cowshed introduces Wildly Feel-Good spa moments from the heart of the Somerset countryside – the antidote to hustle culture and minimalist selfoptimisation. It pushes back against modern interpretations of wellness, with everyday self-care designed for the emotionally intelligent, not the over-disciplined. Bringing a breath of fresh air and irreverence, Cowshed prioritises how self-care makes you feel.

The relaunch marks a clear shift, with Cowshed now positioned at the intersection of beauty, design and emotional wellness, blending rebellious British character with global aesthetic sensibility. It is built around four strategic pillars: fragrancefirst storytelling, premium product and packaging, design-led and culturally relevant gifting, and a confident, intelligent tone of voice. This evolution positions Cowshed as a modern British heritage brand – recognisable yet ready to be re-chosen.

With one foot in the spa and the other in a wellington boot, Cowshed lives in the sweet spot

between refined luxury and unpolished charm –“champagne flutes and muddy boots.” It draws on its Somerset roots and Babington House, where the original spa was located, with inspiration from British botanicals grown in the surrounding Victorian walled garden.

Good vibes only, Cowshed creates warmth, relaxation and comfort, offering an antidote to city living and a sensory escape into its countryside origins.

With a fragrance-first approach, every product starts with scent – developed with fragrance expert Virginie Daniau – and is designed to meet mood, not just treat skin. The original fragrance profiles have been modernised to bring depth, emotional clarity and contemporary fragrance throw, designed to evoke instinct rather than aroma alone.

Cowshed’s signature fragrances – Wildly FeelGood scents – are artfully imagined for those who choose pleasure over perfection. Each is instinctive, intelligent and emotionally led, offering moments of escape, connection or clarity in everyday life.

From reviving hand wash to romantic bath rituals, every product is designed to belong in the home as much as the bathroom. Fragrance profiles include Relax, Indulge, Replenish, Active, Refresh and Restore.

CREATRICE LAUNCHES: Introducing Embodied Fashion

Creatrice is a new luxury womenswear brand introducing Embodied Fashion, a design philosophy rooted in somatic intelligence, presence, and selfexpression.

Creatrice redefines the relationship between women and what they wear.

Creatrice begins with the body itself. Silhouettes are intentional and architectural, fabrics are selected for breathability and movement, and construction balances structure with ease.

Creatrice garments are developed through a somatic design approach - an understanding of how fabric, cut, and silhouette influence how a woman feels in her body. Each piece is designed to either ground, soften, expand, or lead, depending on the energy and intention a woman chooses to embody.

Founded by Emma Mullane after nearly two decades inside the fashion industry, Creatrice emerged from lived experience. Having worked across development, production, and brandbuilding, Emma witnessed first-hand how disconnected fashion had become from the women it was meant to serve.

“The turning point came when I realised my clothes were shaping my energy,” she says. “Getting dressed became a ritual - a way of returning to myself. That’s when Creatrice was born.”

Creatrice launches with a considered capsule of sculptural silk dresses, architectural blouses, and fluid tailoring.

Creatrice stands out by combining distinctive design with emotional resonance. Inspired by the connection between body, emotion and movement, the brand explores the balance between structure and fluidity. Creating pieces that are uniquely feminine, sculptural and powerful.

Creatrice positions clothing as a tool for transformation when it is designed with care and intelligence.

The brand works in small runs with UK-based and European production partners, prioritising quality, transparency, and long-term wear. Fabrics include silk, cupro, viscose, and regenerated fibres selected for both their environmental credentials and how they feel on the body. creatricestudio.com

Rampley & Co

The Spring Collection 2026

Rampley & Co presents its Spring 2026 collection, early-season dressing considered at its most considered, drawing on the finest silks, wools and linens to offer a wardrobe built for the months ahead.

London-based luxury menswear brand Rampley & Co has unveiled its Spring 2026 collection, bringing together 75 pieces that span tailored jackets, handmade silk ties, art-inspired pocket squares and lightweight linen accessories. The collection reflects the brand’s enduring commitment to craft, quality of material and the kind of considered dressing that does not rush to meet the season.

At the heart of the collection is an expanded range of tailored jackets in cloths chosen for the transitional months: Light-Blue Hopsack WoolLinen, Rust Check Wool Blend and Light-Grey Hopsack Wool Blend sit alongside perennial favourites in herringbone merino and superfine

wool. Each jacket is crafted with a silk lining, one of the house signatures, and is available in a range of chest sizes.

The accessories tell a story of spring through colour and motif. New pocket squares draw directly from the history of art: the Spring Morning in the Heart of the City by Childe Hassam and The Boulevard Montmartre in Spring, both rendered in fine silk, bring Impressionist light and movement to the breast pocket. Van Gogh’s Oranges & Lemons and Green Wheat Fields continue the painterly thread, as do Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party and Sorolla’s Paseo a orillas del mar.

In ties, the season introduces new knitted woolcashmere blends in Ecru, Bottle Green, Oxblood, and Midnight Blue, alongside an expanded range of stripe and medallion silks, including a Burnt Yellow & Blue Floral Repeat and a richly toned Tobacco & Blue Medallion. All ties are handmade in Italy from silk sourced in Como.

Completing the collection is a concise edit of linen pocket squares in White, Pale Yellow, and Windsor Blue, ideal for warmer-weather dressing, and a selection of the brand’s waxed-cotton bags and luggage, made in England from vegetabletanned leather.

The full Spring 2026 collection is available now at rampleyandco.com

“Before you’ve said a word, colour has already done some of the talking. The tones you choose in your jacket, tie or pocket square subtly shape how you’re perceived, whether that’s confident, considered, creative or reserved.”

NOT JUST FOR ROYALTY MICHAEL ROSE, MAYFAIR

There are few pieces in jewellery as impactful as the tiara. It is not simply an accessory, but a statement, of presence, of confidence, of intent. More than how it looks, a tiara enhances how the wearer feels: posture sharpens, the chin lifts, and a quiet assurance settles in. It offers something no other piece quite can.

Historically, the tiara has moved fluidly between worlds. Born of antiquity, where leaf crowns marked victors and status, it evolved into a symbol of aristocracy and ceremony across European courts. By the 19th century, it became a staple of high society, worn at balls, state occasions, and evenings where diamonds were not simply encouraged, but expected. The tiara continues to evolve with the times.

Today, it exists in a more intriguing, liberated context. No longer reserved solely for royalty or brides, the modern tiara has found its place in fashion editorials, private collections, and even in personal wardrobes. It speaks to a renewed appetite for pieces that have history and soul, that are expressive, and unapologetically glamorous. The question is no longer who is allowed to wear a tiara, but rather when one chooses to.

And the answer? Whenever the occasion calls for it, or when one decides to create the moment.

At Michael Rose, this philosophy is embraced with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Their tiaras are designed not only to honour tradition, but to adapt to modern life - including exceptional pieces that convert seamlessly into necklaces. It is jewellery that understands both occasion and versatility; heirlooms in the making, but never confined to a single setting.

Because ultimately, a tiara is not about protocol. It is about possibility.

WAYS TO SLEEP STYLISHLY

If the living room is considered the heart of the home, then surely the bedroom is the mind – tailored to your most intimate needs and personal style. While most rooms serve the entire household, this one is just for you. Anatomical analogies aside, it’s one of our firm beliefs that the bedroom deserves a near-cellular (last one, I promise) level of attention. Beyond personal aesthetics, it is also likely the most healthoriented room you occupy; your space to rest, relax, and repair is of paramount importance to your life, both inside and beyond your home. While it’s all well and good to encourage you to follow your personal passions, some styles are so timeless that we find ourselves returning to them again and again. With that in mind, we’ve pieced together a selection of ideas to inspire you –whether you’re a curator of mid-century design or prefer a contemporary zen. Here are five ways to build the modern bedroom.

THE ROYAL APARTMENTS:

Let’s start with something that reaches further back on the design timeline than the rest. Defined by its richly detailed interiors from ornate furniture to wall panelling and floor-to-ceiling bookcases, the Georgian look is steeped in grandeur. And if you happen to have a four-poster bed lying around, you’re already well on your way to turning your future bedroom into a refined nod to the past. Heritage brands have drawn on this aesthetic for decades, using it as a marker of opulence and a tribute to the early forefathers of modern design. Putting a contemporary spin on this age-old style, you see, is much easier than you might think. The 1700s were, if nothing else, somewhat synonymous with vanity. People took immense pride in their appearance, and with that demand came a solution: the vanity table. On the flip side, however, as the world became increasingly globalised, another piece of furniture – one that, ironically, divided – began to gain popularity. Room dividers offered an added sense of privacy, even within the most intimate settings.

TECHNICOLOUR DREAMS:

A little further along in the history of the home – but a history lesson all the same. Mid-century design (the 20th, for those keeping score) is the

“Sleep

has become its own health culture in recent years, a shift only amplified by the meteoric rise of technology”

era that largely shaped the furniture landscape we know today. A kind of mini renaissance for anyone who sees a Kubrick scene wherever they go and dreams in Technicolour. And speaking of dreams, where better to have yours than surrounded by the unmistakable vision of 1960s style? It’s a melting pot of rich woods, bold colours, and functional furniture, an aesthetic that has resurfaced time and again since it first graced our homes some 70 years ago.

If you want your sleep space to channel this trend, our recommendation is to build from the ground up – literally. Start with a statement midcentury rug, then choose a bed with the largest, most practically designed headboard you can find. The look can be finished with one of the era’s many iconic lounge chairs for good measure - look to names like Vitra or Knoll for inspiration - the result is the perfect cocktail of retro and modern.

A WILD NIGHT:

As previously mentioned, no room is more yours than the bedroom, so bold statements of self-expression are almost the default when it comes to your chambre à coucher. But what about those of you who want to ensure your space has no quiet characters? Try a statement mirror that reflects your personality as much as your outfits, a bed worthy of your dreams, and wallpaper from LondonArt bold enough to breathe new life into the phrase, “if these walls could talk.”

As always with the eclectic look, the core concept revolves entirely around placing the unique memories and ideas that define you, wherever you choose. It’s about hitting the unmute button on your design story and embracing the beauty of organised chaos. The pieces above serve as a guide, a starting point for building a more daring, expressive aesthetic.

SLEEPING SCANDI:

Life can ask a lot of us. Which is why some of us crave a space where responsibilities fade, and the visual bombardment of city life disappears with them. A place where the overhead light is used for no more than the five seconds it takes to find the switch for your lamps. A bedroom designed with this mindset can be uniquely beneficial, its calming nature offering a space to close your eyes, before you close your eyes.

To achieve this deeply relaxing breath of fresh air, follow the minimalist mantra of “less is more,” both in quantity and colour palette. Opt for softly-shaded wooden side tables from Audo Copenhagen, pair them with quietly luxurious lamps from Nuura, and gently layer the space around a welcoming bed.

BEDROOM OF TOMORROW, TODAY:

Sleep has become its own health culture in recent years, a shift only amplified by the meteoric rise of technology. We track our rest through apps, invest in mattresses that memorise our sleeping positions, and increasingly these innovations are reflected in the furniture we use across the modern bedroom. So what’s on offer to help you make the leap into the future as you fall into bed?

You’ll find this approach integrated into Lema’s fitted furniture range, with its wardrobe sanitising systems, Clei’s award-winning multi-functional furniture solutions, and, of course, the precision engineering behind Interlübke’s exceptional storage options. This is less about aesthetics and more about modernising the way you use one of the most health-centric rooms in the home. chaplins.co.uk

Question: True or False?

“Engaging

an Interior designer is an unnecessary cost?”

With AI offering instant design inspiration and price comparison sites making costs more visible than ever, it’s easy to question whether there is even a need for interior designers in today’s market. But is that really the case?

We asked Hilary Taylor of Tactile Interiors a Hertfordshire-based design studio working across London and the Home Counties.

“It is always beneficial to seek professional interior advice when embarking on any project, even a small one—particularly with commercially driven developments, where early design decisions can have a lasting impact on the overall scheme.”

Good design starts long before colours and curtains. It starts with understanding what is needed from a space. From furniture scale and circulation to natural light, storage and the allimportant proportion, one well-informed decision early on can prevent expensive mistakes and even

corrective purchases later.

Designers don’t just bring ideas—they bring access.’ Says Hilary Taylor. She explains that professional designers build relationships with suppliers across every part of the home-from high street retailers to artisan upholsterers, fabric houses and specialist trade only manufacturers.

She went on to say that ‘design-led thinking is often most effective at the earliest stages of a project, when spatial planning and key decisions about layout and flow are still being formed. In practice, this can mean upgrading the finish, elevating the detail, and ultimately increasing the perceived value of the overall scheme without spending more than originally intended.’

Scrolling endless online catalogues, searching for Goldilocks pieces across a whole home quickly becomes overwhelming and unrealistic. Designers do that work for you—so you don’t have to. And importantly, working with a designer

doesn’t remove your access to great retail finds, online discoveries, or even sale pieces you may have spotted. If it works within the overall scheme, it can absolutely be incorporated.

By using a Designer you’re not reducing your options—you’re expanding them.

Forward-thinking design studios are already abreast of AI and its’ benefits, so by working with a professional designer, in terms of interiors you won’t need to be. Enjoy the best of both worlds: technology where it adds value, and human experience where judgement, instinct, and realworld understanding matter most.

Hilary explained that by engaging an interior designer, you don’t have to commit to a full scheme. Consultancy support can be used on a flexible basis, offering a more accessible way to benefit from professional input while maintaining clarity over scope and cost.”

So, in returning to the original question, now do you consider engaging an Interior Designer to be an unnecessary cost, True or False?

Great design doesn’t necessarily mean spending more… but it certainly delivers better outcomes!

Metro tiles get a contemporary new look

Metro tiles are taking on a sleeker, more sophisticated identity for 2026, with long, elegant formats bringing a fresh new look to this enduring classic.

That’s according to independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore who have just launched two new takes on the trend.

Introducing Atelier and Lipari

Available in two warming finishes, Atelier is a wall and floor tile that is effortlessly stylish. With a matt finish and subtly irregular edges, Atelier could be mistaken for a handmade tile. Beautifully textured, it works fantastically alongside natural materials like oak, stone and brushed brass.

And with more than 40 different tile faces in the range, the finished surface will look naturally varied and organic. Plus, measuring 4.8 x 45cm, it is incredibly versatile and can be laid in either a herringbone, stacked or brick bond layout.

Offering a more crisp take on the trend, Lipari exudes contemporary charm. Measuring 5 x 40cm, it allows homeowners to get creative with layout

Porcelain Superstore give classic metro tiles a 21st century upgrade in two new collections

and can be laid horizontally or vertically to draw the eye and make any space feel larger.

It is available in seven colourways – from brilliant White and chalky Sand to warming Cotto and delicate Blue.

Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Lipari and Atelier show how the metro tile trend is evolving.

“Homeowners still love the familiarity and versatility of classic metro tiles, but there is growing demand for formats that feel more refined, contemporary and visually striking.

“The longer, slimmer shape gives both collections a much more elegant look, while also opening up more creative laying options, from stacked vertical designs to herringbone and modern brick patterns. That makes them especially appealing to customers who want something timeless, but with a fresher and more architectural feel.”

Both Atelier and Lipari are crafted from hardwearing porcelain, ensuring they are incredibly durable and easy to maintain.

WATERING WONDER

Hollygate, Hertfordshire

Hollygate is a four bedroom, new build residence, designed by pb_arc in Great Amwell, Hertfordshire.

Commissioned following the purchase of a derelict bungalow, the project presented a series of constraints: its location within the Green Belt and Conservation Area, alongside a number of protected trees, required a measured and sensitive architectural response.

The design is centred on the dialogue between two distinct forms: a timber-clad “barn” and a reclaimed brick “cottage.” Rather than merging these elements, the scheme celebrates their contrast. This is most evident upon arrival, where a doubleheight entrance hall reveals a narrow glazed slot between the two volumes. Here, timber and brick face one another - expressed honestly and tactilelycreating a moment of clarity and material richness. Above, a lightweight bridge spans the space, connecting the two wings and reinforcing the sense of separation, while a floating stair anchors the composition, all set below a glazed skylight, which embraces all the natural elements above.

The ground floor is arranged to support both openness and retreat. The barn wing houses a double-height living room, kitchen, and dining space, filled with natural light and oriented with front and back views. Supporting spaces - including a utility, pantry, and study - sit discreetly alongside.

In contrast, the cottage wing offers more intimate rooms: a cinema, snug, and ancillary

spaces, providing a quieter counterpoint to the openness of the barn.

On the first floor, the barn accommodates three children’s bedrooms, each paired with their own study mezzanine, creating layered and adaptable spaces. Across the bridge, the cottage wing forms a private master suite, complete with a generous dressing room and ensuite.

At approximately 7,000 sq ft, Hollygate presents an architectural response that draws on local typologies, embraces natural materials, and frames views and the natural surroundings of the site. It is a home shaped as much by its constraints as by its ambitions, resulting in a considered balance between tradition and contemporary living.

Expert Advice for Creating a Stylish and Inviting Outdoor Space

With longer evenings and warmer weather on the horizon, homeowners are increasingly thinking about how to make the most of their gardens after the sun goes down. Thoughtful lighting can completely transform an outdoor space, extending its usability well into the evening while adding atmosphere, highlighting landscaping and improving safety.

James Kendall, Operations Director at KES Lighting & Home, shares his expert guidance on the outdoor lighting trends shaping gardens this year and explains how to use lighting effectively to enjoy evenings outside.

“Garden lighting is often treated as an afterthought, but it has the potential to completely change how a space is used. The right lighting allows homeowners to continue enjoying their garden long after sunset, whether that means entertaining friends, relaxing outdoors or simply appreciating the view from inside the house.”

“Garden lighting is often treated as an afterthought, but it has the potential to completely change how a space is used”

Layered Lighting to Create Depth

Relying on a single light source can make a garden feel flat and uninviting, whereas combining wall lights, path lighting, feature illumination and soft ambient lighting creates depth, interest, and added functionality. Lighting works best in three layers: functional lights for pathways and steps, feature lights to highlight planting or architectural elements and softer ambient lighting around seating areas to create a welcoming atmosphere. Rather than flooding a garden with light, the most effective approach is to focus on specific focal points. This could include uplighting trees, illuminating textured walls or subtly highlighting water features, which will all help to add drama and structure. This not only enhances the garden itself, but also adds interest to the view from inside the home.

Small Garden Lighting Ideas That Make a Big Impact

Strategic lighting placement is key to make a small outdoor space feel far larger and more inviting. In smaller gardens, lighting is great for creating the illusion of depth, so rather than placing lights only near the house, try highlighting the far boundary or a tree at the back of the garden which will help to draw the eye outward, making the space feel larger after dark. Wall lights and subtle ground lighting can also help by creating a clean and uncluttered look, while low level lights provide practical illumination, making the space both functional and welcoming, whatever its size.

How to Light a Pergola or Covered Seating Area

Pergolas and covered seating areas are becoming increasingly popular in modern gardens and lighting is essential for making these spaces usable in the evening. To create a cosy atmosphere that

“Soft ambient lighting creates depth, interest, and added functionality”

feels like an outdoor living room, consider softer, decorative lighting, such as pendant lights, warm wall lights or subtle string lighting. Layered lighting is important to allow the space to shift easily from relaxed evenings to entertaining guests, and adding dimmable lights or multiple sources will give you flexibility depending on how the area is being used. This ensures the space is both beautiful and practical at any time of day.

Making Gardens Safe and Adaptable After Dark

Safety is an important consideration and low level lights along pathways or integrated into steps are ideal for providing visibility after dark. For flexibility, it’s also worth considering Smart outdoor lighting, which can be easily controlled from a smartphone. This allows the homeowner to adjust the brightness and even adjust the lighting in different lighting zones. Furthermore, timers and automation can ensure lights switch on at dusk and turn off later in the evening, making it simple for homeowners to create a relaxed atmosphere while still maintaining practical lighting where it is needed.

GREEN SCHEMES

Green is fast becoming one of the most sought-after interior colours for British homeowners, according to new research from eco paint brand Victory Colours.

Using data from Pinterest’s Home Décor category, Victory Colours found searches for the term ‘Shades of Green’ have increased 20 per cent over the last month*.

And the team at Victory Colours, which specialises in environmentally-friendly paint, believes it’s the colour’s connection to the natural world, as well as its incredible versatility, which is making it a hit with homeowners.

Victoria Yardley, Founder of Victory Colours, said: “Green has a natural ability to make a space feel calm, balanced and inviting. People are increasingly looking to create homes that feel restorative and connected to nature, and green does that beautifully.

“Whether it’s a soft sage, an earthy olive or a deeper forest tone, green is incredibly adaptable. It works as a subtle neutral in some schemes, but can also add richness and character when used more boldly. It’s a colour that feels timeless, comforting and easy to live with, so it is no surprise homeowners are scouring Pinterest for inspiration.”

Victory Colours offers a wide range of green shades. From the deep Ayton Green and rich Katniss through to brighter shades, including Peastachio and the Cornwall-inspired Coming Home Trees.

CA’ PIETRA INTRODUCES ENSO

The

tactile limestone mosaic bringing a softer, more soulful mood to interiors

As interiors move towards spaces that feel warmer, quieter and richer in texture, Ca’ Pietra’s new Enso collection arrives at exactly the right moment. Crafted from tumbled limestone and shaped with a softly undulating surface, Enso is a mosaic designed to be experienced as much through atmosphere and touch as through pattern, bringing a more organic, gently time-worn finish to the home.

Inspired by the look of crystal-clear streams flowing over pebbles, Enso has a beautifully dappled surface that shifts with the light, giving walls and floors a sense of movement without ever feeling busy. It is this subtle play of texture, alongside the honesty of natural limestone, that makes the collection feel so relevant now, when the most inviting interiors are moving away from flatter, sharper finishes and towards materials that bring depth, softness and a more grounding kind of beauty.

Named after the Zen Buddhist concept of Ensō, which speaks to wholeness through imperfection, the collection carries that idea into the home in a way that feels elegant rather than literal. There is a calmness to it, though not a cold one. Instead, Enso has the kind of tactile character that makes a room feel settled and enveloping, whether it is used to line a shower, wrap a cloakroom in texture or bring a more sculptural finish to a kitchen wall.

The collection is available in a series of mosaic designs that each bring their own expression of the stone’s surface. Cube offers a neat, architectural feel, Strip gives a more elongated linearity, Organic Basketweave introduces a looser decorative note, while Sand & Chalk Chess taps into the growing

appetite for tonal checkerboard effects that feel softened, nuanced and quietly playful rather than graphic. That softer approach to pattern is very much where interiors are heading, especially in bathrooms, utility spaces and characterful kitchens, where smaller-scale tile layouts are being used to add charm without overwhelming a scheme.

Colourways span Chalk, Sand and Charcoal, which means Enso can move easily between the pale, chalky palettes that are shaping restful, monastic-inspired interiors and the deeper, moodier spaces that rely on texture rather than shine for their drama. Used in lighter tones, it brings a lovely mineral softness that sits naturally with plaster, oak and brushed brass. In Charcoal,

“Used

in lighter tones, it brings a lovely mineral softness that sits naturally with plaster, oak and brushed brass”

it becomes more cocooning and architectural, particularly when lit well, with the surface catching light across every gentle rise and dip. Ca’ Pietra recommends lighting the mosaics for the best effect, allowing that organic texture to come fully into view.

Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra says: “With Enso, we wanted to create something that felt instinctive and deeply tactile, a surface with softness, movement and a natural ease to it. There is a real appetite now for rooms that feel more enveloping and more atmospheric, and Enso answers that beautifully through limestone, light and texture. It has detail, though it never feels overworked, which is what gives it such lasting appeal.”

Suitable for interior floors, interior walls and exterior walls, Enso has the versatility to move across the home while keeping that same tactile identity intact. It is a collection that feels trendaware, though not trend-bound, which is always where Ca’ Pietra is at its strongest: taking what people are leaning towards in interiors and translating it into surfaces with permanence, beauty and depth.

REWILDING THE LUXURY HOME

How BAYA uses nature as the antidote to predictable luxury.

Somewhere along the way, luxury interiors became strangely lifeless. Perfectly styled, impeccably finished, and emotionally flat. Spaces designed to impress on arrival, then say very little once you’re inside.

For years, luxury interiors have been about sharp lines, polished surfaces, rooms that look immaculate but feel inert. Nature, when invited in at all, has often been reduced to decoration - a vase of flowers, a leafy print, a plant in the corner performing wellness.

BAYA Interiors’ approach to design brings something far more powerful. Not nature as accessory, but nature as energy. A force that can shift mood, soften space, restore clarity and make a home feel instinctively good to be in.

The most luxurious homes today are not the most expensive-looking - they are the ones that make you exhale the moment you walk through the door.

As Creative Director Karl Openshaw puts it: “The impact of botanical design goes far beyond

“BAYA Interiors’ approach to design brings something far more powerful. Not nature as accessory, but nature as energy. A force that can shift mood, soften space, restore clarity and make a home feel instinctively good to be in”

aesthetics. Nature changes how we respond to a space. Organic forms, natural light, texture, movement - these things affect us immediately. You feel calmer, clearer, more grounded. That’s not styling. That’s human instinct.”

Across BAYA’s work, botanical influence is never literal or overly themed. It is distilled into atmosphere, rhythm and response. Colour palettes that shift with daylight. Curved forms that ease the rigidity of architecture. Natural materials that invite touch rather than admiration from afar. Spaces with pulse, not polish.

At Prince of Wales Drive, this plays out through a rich dialogue with the surrounding parkland. Earth-led tones, herringbone timber flooring and green glass accents draw the landscape inward. As sunlight moves across the apartment, surfaces flicker and change, giving the interior a sense of motion and mood. Outside, the terrace becomes an extension of that feeling - relaxed, tactile and immersed in green.

At Chelsea Waterfront, BAYA’s riverside penthouse takes its cues from the Thames itself. Deep blues, rich teals and soft sky tones create an interior that shifts with the day. Morning light energises. Evening light restores. The home moves with you, quietly supporting different moods without demanding attention.

At The Bryanston, Hyde Park, nature is interpreted with more precision. In the primary bedroom, a leaf-embossed metal headboard reworks the language of flora into something sharper and more contemporary - subtle, tactile and quietly grounding.

This is where interiors are heading. Away from static perfection. Away from rooms that look expensive but feel nothing. Toward spaces that

restore, regulate and reconnect.

As Managing Director Philippa Simoson says:

“When nature is embedded into a home from the start, it changes the way you live in it. You feel calmer, more present, more at ease. That’s the difference between a room that looks good and a room that gives something back.”

Chelsea Flower Show is a cultural celebration of nature at its most joyful, expressive and transformative. Beyond the beauty of the blooms, it reminds us that colour, texture and seasonal change have a powerful effect on how we feel - lifting mood, restoring energy and inviting a deeper sense of calm.

That same philosophy is shaping the future of interiors. When homes draw on the richness of the natural world through palette, materiality and light, they become more than beautiful spaces. They become places that energise, soothe and reconnect us to ourselves.

A home in bloom is not simply inspired by nature. It is changed by it.

The New Statement Entrance: Why Front Doors Are Taking Centre Stage

In London’s evolving architectural landscape – from contemporary townhouses to reimagined period homes – the entrance is becoming far more than a point of access. It is now a defining feature, setting the tone for the entire property.

At Inspiration Doors, we believe a front door should do more than complement a home – it should define it. It is the first impression, the focal point, and increasingly, a reflection of the people who live behind it.

This shift is being driven by a growing desire for individuality. Homeowners are moving away from standardised designs and looking instead for something that feels personal and considered. The entrance has become an opportunity to create a statement – not just in scale, but in character.

Oversized pivot doors, minimal detailing, and integrated glazing are now central to modern design. But it is material that truly sets these entrances apart. Finishes such as oxidised metal and patina bronze introduce depth, texture, and subtle variation that cannot be replicated. These are not static surfaces – they respond to light, environment, and time.

The result is something genuinely unique. No two doors are ever the same – no one else in the

world will have a door like it.

Of course, this level of design must be matched by performance. In a city environment, security, thermal efficiency, and durability are essential. The challenge lies in delivering this without compromising on aesthetics – ensuring that the door performs as beautifully as it looks.

As architecture continues to evolve, the entrance is no longer an afterthought. It is a statement of intent – a balance of design, craftsmanship, and individuality.

At Inspiration Doors, that philosophy is at the core of everything we create: doors that are not just seen, but remembered. Visit inspirationdoors.co.uk Email hello@inspirationdoors.co.uk
