HITCHIN LAVENDER L
avender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times. We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed! We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.
PLANTING & GROWING Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through. Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in. Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long. Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive. When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established. There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up. When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.
WHICH VARIETY TO PICK? There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from. We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field. Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use. Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September. If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop. Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared 2 2 M AY 2 0 2 5

away by their owners. The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more. Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings. Why combining gold, silver, and platinum is the modern way to wear your favourite pieces – according to Baker Brothers, Bedford.
The New Rules of Jewellery: Mixing Metals with Confidence 3 2 M AY 2 0 2 5
G
one are the days when gold and silver had to be kept separate. Today, mixing precious metals is one of the most stylish and versatile ways to wear jewellery — a trend we’re seeing embraced by customers across the five counties. Whether you’re heading to a countryside wedding or a relaxed lunch in town, combining yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum allows for a layered look that is full of personality.
START WITH A STATEMENT If you’re new to mixing metals, start with a hero piece that already blends more than one metal, a two-tone watch or a mixed metal ring is a great starting point. This acts as a foundation to build from. From there, layer complementary pieces like slim white gold bangles alongside yellow gold bracelets, or stack rose gold rings with platinum designs for a fresh, contemporary twist.
worth considering which metals sit side by side to help your pieces age gracefully.
REFINED, MODERN, AND DISTINCTLY YOU Mixing metals suits the Hertfordshire lifestyle beautifully, relaxed yet refined, modern with a nod to timeless tradition. It’s a subtle but effective way to tell your story through jewellery, blending treasured heirlooms with new acquisitions in a way that feels deeply personal. At Baker Brothers, we believe jewellery should reflect who you are today and mixing metals offers the perfect canvas. Three lionesses, one lion Whipsnade Zoo confirms sexes of youngest north African lion cubs and invites public for help naming
W
hipsnade Zoo’s quartet of 12-week-old northern African lion cubs have had their first health check, allowing keepers to confirm the sexes of the conservation zoo’s newest arrivals. The cubs were microchipped and vaccinated during the medical examination, which was conducted by the zoo’s expert team of vets and vet nurses – who confirmed that mum Waka and dad Malik are the proud parents of three females and one male. The cubs’ sexes and vital statistics will be added to Species360 - a global species database, which is shared by zoos across the world, officially adding the four cubs to the international conservation breeding programme for this vulnerable species. Sarah McGregor, Section Manager of the predators team at Whipsnade Zoo, said: “The lion cubs’ first health check is an exciting milestone, and we are delighted that all four are doing well. “Waka has proven to be a doting and attentive mother and their clean bill of health is testament to her.” Keepers are now asking for the public’s help in naming the youngest litter of cubs. Whilst two cubs will be named by local schools, members of the general public can donate to enter a prize draw, with the winner getting the opportunity to help pick a name for the boy and a girl, meet a lion keeper, and have an overnight stay in the lodges at the UK’s largest zoo. Sarah added: “Naming the cubs is really important and a big responsibility, so we’ve come up with a shortlist for the public to vote on and help to fundraise for conservation. Every donation made to the naming draw will help to support the care of the growing cubs, and the work of ZSL, the international charity behind Whipsnade Zoo, and its projects around the globe to restore

habitats and protect wildlife. “ The quartet of rare cubs were born in January, just two months after the Zoo’s other lioness Winta gave birth to a litter of three, who are going to be named by supporters of the charity. All seven cubs are important additions to the conservation breeding programme for their threatened sub species. “It’s been wonderful to have so many people visit us to see the cubs, and the excitement that they bring. Like all the animals in our care, our lions are really important for helping to educate our visitors not only about the threats lions face in the wild, but also how the public can help us protect the planet and create a world where wildlife thrives,” continued Sarah. As a result of large-scale habitat conversion for logging, livestock farming and housing, the loss of prey through unsustainable hunting, and human/wildlife conflict, 75% of wild African lion populations are declining in the wild. Whipsnade Zoo, as part of ZSL, supports work in the W-Arli-Pendjari conservation complex, spanning the borders of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Benin, which holds 90% of the lions remaining in West Africa, to support a wide number of species including lions through research, monitoring, and supporting national capacity for wildlife conservation. whipsnadezoo.org

IT’S THE MONOPOLY: ST ALBANS EDITION’S ‘BIG REVEAL’
“The public was invited to send in suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature in the game”
A
brand-new official MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition - featuring the great and good of the city - is now available in shops. The game - which sees bespoke property spaces and cards - hit the shops on 14th October last year, following a formal launch at The Odyssey Cinema. When it was announced that St Albans is getting its own version of the world’s most popular board game, the public was invited to send in suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature in the game. Landing at 4 0 M AY 2 0 2 5
the top of the board is St Albans Cathedral. At the other end - ‘Old Kent Road, the game’s most affordable square - is the Roman Theatre. This, say the game’s makers, is on account of it being “so very old”. “We have been spoilt with choices when putting this MONOPOLY board together,” says Ella Gibbs, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK. “We produce official MONOPOLY games based on places all over the world, including in recent years Palm Beach, Dubai, Phuket and The Hamptons. Now St Albans has joined the world’s MONOPOLY elite!”. The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Jamie Day, says: “It is wonderful to see the historic city of St Albans celebrated as an official game of MONOPOLY”. The MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition is available to purchase at Waterstones and WHSmith - as well as extensively online, including at Booghe.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk.

CLASSIC IBIZA’S AUDIENCE CHOOSE TRACKS FOR HATFIELD HOUSE SHOW
A
s Classic Ibiza’s return to Hertfordshire’s Hatfield House on Saturday 16 August draws ever closer, the concert organisers have announced the results of an extra-special audience track-poll to celebrate the show’s 10th birthday. Over the Easter weekend, the concert’s 58,000 social media followers were able to select the house tunes they most wanted to be performed live by Stephen Hussey’s Urban Soul Orchestra and the show’s special guests, London Community Gospel Choir. The thousands of votes have now been counted, and the eight most popular tracks featuring at the show are: Blackwater (Octave One); Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless) (Crystal Waters); (I Wanna Give You) Devotion (Nomad); Lola’s Theme (The Shapeshifters); Saltwater (Chicane); Sun Is Shining (Bob Marley vs. Funkstar De Luxe); Sunchyme (Dario G); and You Got the Love (The Source ft. Candi Staton). London Community Gospel Choir are one of the world’s most in demand choirs, having recorded with the likes of Adele, Blur and Madonna. Gospel Choir will also be joining DJ Jose Luis for a live mash-up of even more iconic house tunes at the start of the show. Classic Ibiza’s Lisa Ward says: “A huge thank you to everyone that voted in this year’s track poll. We’ve landed on a perfect mix of stone-cold house classics and some really uplifting, sing-along moments, which is what Classic Ibiza is all about. Having seen London Community Gospel Choir perform the Albert Hall over Christmas, I know that the combination with the incredible Urban Soul Orchestra is going to be something truly magical.” Elsewhere in the concert, Urban Soul Orchestra will be performing more tracks than ever before in a “best-of ” set, packed full of audience favourites from the show’s 10-year repertoire. Insomnia by Faithless, Born Slippy by Underworld and Adagio For Strings by Tiësto are among over 50 anthemic tunes that will be given the full orchestral treatment. Urban Soul Orchestra have worked for over 25 years with many dance music greats, including Groove Armada, Robert Miles and Nightmares On Wax. Demand for tickets to Classic Ibiza’s 2025 summer tour is high, with some venues already having sold-out. The Algarve’s Secret Season: Luxury and Laidback Indulgence at Four Seasons Fairways
T
here’s something quietly magical about the Algarve in the off-season. When the golden summer crowds begin to thin and the pace softens, a different side of Portugal’s southern coast reveals itself. It’s a time of year locals quietly cherish, and seasoned travellers seek out the so-called Secret Season, when the days are still bathed in sunlight, the beaches are beautifully empty, and the rhythm of life slows to something altogether more indulgent. For those in the know, there is no better base from which to enjoy this more serene side of the Algarve than Four Seasons Fairways, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of Quinta do Lago. Off-season travel in the Algarve is an insider’s secret. The summer heat mellows to a gentle warmth, perfect for al fresco lunches, early evening strolls, and long, peaceful days spent outdoors. With the sun lingering well into the afternoon and temperatures resting comfortably in the midtwenties, it’s the ideal time to enjoy everything the region has to offer, without the need for crowds, queues or too much planning. It’s also a time when the luxury of space and stillness becomes part of the appeal. You can wander along empty stretches of beach, book a table at even the most in-demand restaurants with ease, or tee off at Quinta do Lago’s world-class golf courses without a wait in sight.

Four Seasons Fairways makes the most of this season of calm. The resort’s unique blend of villa-style accommodation with the convenience and service of a boutique hotel offers guests the best of both worlds. Each villa or apartment is impeccably designed, spacious and private, complete with either a private pool or Jacuzzi, outdoor dining area and fully equipped kitchen. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy morning coffee in your robe on the terrace, cook up local
produce in your own time, or let someone else take care of everything entirely. Despite the space and privacy, you’re never far from luxurious touches and thoughtful service. The resort’s wellness centre is a peaceful haven for rest and rejuvenation, with an indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms offering everything from massages to facials. For those who like to stay active, the gym is well equipped and hosts regular classes, from yoga to Pilates. It’s wellness on your terms - unrushed and understated. Food is central to the Four Seasons Fairways experience, and the quieter seasons offer even more opportunity to indulge. At VIVO, guests can ease into the day with fresh juices, excellent coffee, and breakfast dishes that make the most of seasonal ingredients. Come evening, Amara offers a more refined affair. With panoramic views and a menu that celebrates modern Portuguese cuisine, dining here feels elegant yet relaxed, especially when paired with a bottle of local wine and the glow of a Quinta do Lago sunset. Beyond the resort, off-season dining takes on a wonderfully languid rhythm. Long, wine-soaked lunches at places like 2 Passos perched overlooking the ocean, are practically a requirement. The service is unhurried, the views uninterrupted, and the freshly caught seafood, grilled to perfection. The off-season, is also ideal for exploring. Golf, of course, remains a major draw with Quinta do Lago’s courses world-renowned, and the fairways are just that little bit greener when you’re not playing in 30-degree heat. The same is true for tennis, padel, or even a gentle cycle along the wooden boardwalks that hug the Ria Formosa. For walkers, the nearby trails winding through

pine forests and along the coast are quiet and wild, alive with the colours of nature and the sounds of migrating birds. You might spot flamingos or simply enjoy the salty breeze as you stroll along the sand dunes. For those craving a little adventure or culture, there are treasures to be discovered nearby. The cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings of Faro’s old town are perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring, while a boat trip to Estaminé - a restaurant set on a secluded island in the Ria Formosa is a must. With its barefoot charm and unbeatable views, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon a wellkept secret. And perhaps that’s the real beauty of the Secret Season. It’s a time when indulgence feels natural, when the Algarve’s simple pleasures - sunshine, space, great food and beautiful landscapes come into focus. At Four Seasons Fairways, everything is designed to let you settle in, slow down, and savour it all. Whether you’re curled up on a terrace with a book, sitting down to a long dinner at Amara, or watching the sun dip beneath the Atlantic after a day spent out in nature, it’s the kind of experience that lingers long after you’ve left. As the rest of the world rushes on, there’s something quietly wonderful about choosing to pause. PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
T
heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

British Science Week Spotlight: LEGO and STEM Innovation in Schools By Simon Winchester, Head of Academic at St Margaret’s School
F
rom LEGO play to building kit cars, STEM is evolving in schools today and the future is both exciting and challenging. Yet in a fast-moving technological landscape, employers are increasingly looking for students who can approach STEM as more than simply an exercise in repeating ‘parrotfashion’ what they learned for an exam. The very term STEM suggests something that is more than the sum of its parts – an appreciation of how pupils can apply their learning to the real world, with all of the complexity that real world problem solving requires. For example, nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. LEGO enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work. LEGO allows students to model a real-world system and set of controls, giving them the chance to understand and visualise the connection between a theoretical concept and its practical application. This is perhaps why it is becoming so popular in schools like St Margaret’s today. Likewise, building anything requires students to process a design which is presented to them and to apply this logically to the engineering and construction of a product. A car is a perfect example of this because it is subject to the laws of physics, the economics of mathematics, it must suit the ergonomics of biology, it must be engineered to last and requires technological skill and understanding to come together. This is perhaps why more and more schools are incorporating the building of kit cars into their STEM offering. Most importantly, for students to work on a kit car successfully, it requires them

“Nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. LEGO enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work”
to design, work as a team, model, communicate, build, problem solve and test products and solutions – building the vital inter-personal and collaborative skills which the STEM industry is crying out for. Another area being embraced at St Margaret’s is robotics. In our rapidly evolving technological world where products and systems are increasingly automated and less reliant on humans to carry out tasks that we are simply not built to do, humans are relying on robotics to optimise manufacturing processes and services. Pupils need to be aware of the role robotics plays in society today and to start thinking about what it can do for us in the future. Robots require an understanding of the synergies between a mechanical system and a computer system. At St Margaret’s School we really believe in driving pupils’ academic interests through their co-curricular pursuits. As STEM continues to evolve, we should expect to see schools pushing the boundaries for future STEM-related activities. Each generation arriving in secondary schools will do so with a more advanced digital skillset, having grown up in such a rapidly changing technological landscape. The appetite for challenge among pupils in this arena is exciting and gives the pupils themselves real scope to challenge the boundaries of STEM. stmargarets-school.org.uk

202 LOOKBOOK UNVEILED Under Daniel Fletcher’s creative direction for a second year
A
scot Racecourse proudly presents the highly anticipated 2025 Royal Ascot Lookbook, once again guided by the creative vision of acclaimed British designer Daniel Fletcher. Now in his second year as Creative Director, Fletcher deepens his exploration of occasion dressing, blending contemporary fashion with British heritage and global influences. Following the resounding success of his debut, Fletcher expands the Lookbook’s vision, celebrating versatility, inclusivity, and innovation while honouring Royal Ascot’s timeless dress codes. This year’s collection of edits showcases a rich interplay of British craftsmanship, international style, and vintage revival, inviting racegoers to embrace their individuality while paying homage to heritage. 7 2 M AY 2 0 2 5
The 2025 Royal Ascot Lookbook refines and reimagines key themes, offering sartorial inspiration for every racegoer:
THE ARCHIVE EDIT: A contemporary take on conscious fashion, this edit delves into the rich history of Royal Ascot style. Featuring vintage, rental, and borrowed pieces, it redefines elegance through the lens of bygone eras, proving that heritage and modernity can exist in harmony.
BEST OF BRITISH: A continuation of last year’s homage to British design, this edit showcases the finest homegrown talent, from esteemed heritage brands to dynamic high-street innovators. Playful styling, preppy aesthetics, and eccentric charm set the tone, with a

whimsical British summertime backdrop featuring oversized strawberries, daisies, and orchard fruits.
THE INTERNATIONAL EDIT: Reflecting Royal Ascot’s global appeal, this edit celebrates international designers, with a sleek, minimalist set design allowing the styles to take centre stage. This year also introduces traditional national dress – which is welcomed within the dress codes – including the Scottish national dress of kilt and sporran, adding a fresh cultural dimension to the event’s renowned dress codes.
PRINTS & PATTERNS: A bold and vibrant exploration of pattern and colour, this edit embraces the joyous prints that define Royal Ascot each summer. Stripes, florals, polka dots, statement graphics and appliqué take the spotlight, set against custom-designed backdrops that enhance their dynamic energy. Beyond these defining edits, the Lookbook spotlights key trends for Spring/Summer 2025, including the revival of polka dots, the emergence of matcha green as a leading pastel hue, and the earthy sophistication of Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Mocca Mousse. Luxurious fabrics – silk, ruffles, and sheer layering – further elevate the season’s aesthetic. Daniel Fletcher commented: “Returning as Creative Director for a second year, I wanted to push the creative boundaries even further,
balancing heritage with modernity and encouraging racegoers to see occasion dressing as an expression of individuality. The Archive Edit felt like a natural evolution of last year’s sustainability focus, drawing inspiration from Ascot’s storied style while championing vintage and rental pieces. Meanwhile, Best of British is more vibrant than ever, embracing playful pairings and unexpected twists that highlight the depth of UK fashion. I’m eager to see how racegoers make their own mark on Royal Ascot style in 2025.” Felicity Barnard, CEO, Ascot Racecourse, added: “Royal Ascot is an unparalleled moment in the social and sporting calendar, where tradition and fashion converge and Daniel’s vision for the 2025 Lookbook is a really exciting mix of heritage alongside modern trends. This year’s edits pay homage to everything that Ascot is celebrated for, including the global influences that are shaping contemporary fashion. With a focus on craftsmanship, sustainability, and self-expression, the 2025 Lookbook is designed to inspire racegoers to embrace the art of dressing up while honouring the dress codes that make Royal Ascot so truly special.” The Royal Ascot Dress Code remains unchanged in 2025. This operates across the Royal Enclosure, Queen Anne Enclosure and Village Enclosure. No dress code applies in the Windsor Enclosure, although a significant majority of guests in that area choose to dress up in the spirit of the occasion.

Find the best lightweight foundation for your skin type The no make-up make-up look is becoming a game changer, but what does your skin need? By Sara Keenan
L
ightweight foundations, BB creams and tinted moisturisers are on the rise as more people are aiming for a natural, ‘no make-up make-up’ aesthetic for day-to-day wear, rather than a full face. There are now countless options to choose from, but your skin type and texture can be a deciding factor on which one you go for to ensure you get the dewy and glowing finish you desire. We asked make-up artist Sarah-Jane Froom for a guide on what to look for based on specific skin concerns, as well as product recommendations tailored to each.
DRY SKIN According to Froom, whose philosophy centres on enhancing natural beauty with a “less is more” approach, if you have dry skin it’s important to look for hydrating ingredients. “You should look for products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or vitamin E, which help retain moisture and prevent your skin from feeling tight,” says Froom. “They should also look for a dewy or satin finish which helps restore radiance and prevent the skin from looking dull. Dry skin often also benefits from foundations that provide light to medium coverage, which helps even out the skin tone without clinging to dry patches.” 7 4 M AY 2 0 2 5
SENSITIVE SKIN “Those with sensitive skin should look for hypoallergenic and fragrance-free foundation as it reduces the risk of irritation. They should also look for products that are non-comedogenic as they won’t clog pores, especially if sensitive skin is also prone to breakout,” says Froom. “For sensitive skin, choose a gentle formula that is mineral-based or lightweight, as breathable foundations are kind to sensitive skin.”

MENOPAUSAL SKIN
E.L.F CAMO CC CREAM SPF 30
“As menopausal skin can become drier and thinner, people should look for products with added moisture and ingredients that help support the skin’s elasticity,” says Froom. “Foundations that are light to medium coverage and can even out the skin tone without feeling too heavy are ideal. A foundation formula that can provide a soft, radiant finish to combat dullness.”
L’OREAL PARIS AGE PERFECT RADIANT SERUM FOUNDATION
ROSACEA SKIN Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that mainly affects the face. “People with this condition should look for products with chamomile, aloe vera, or green tea that help calm irritation and reduce redness. Full coverage should also mask the redness associated with rosacea, you may prefer a foundation with buildable coverage,” Froom advises. “They should also avoid products with fragrances or harsh chemicals, which can exacerbate rosacea symptoms.”
“Acne-prone skin often benefits from oil-free products with a matter finish to control shine and prevent breakouts. Heavy foundations can actually worsen acne so look for lightweight options that offer buildable coverage without feeling too thick.”
OILY SKIN “If you have oily skin you should look for foundations with oil-absorbing ingredients such as silica, kaolin clay or salicylic acid,” Froom says. “A matter finish also helps control shine and keep your complexion looking fresh throughout the day. You should also choose long-lasting, sweat-resistant foundations to keep your makeup in place.”
ACNE-PRONE SKIN “Those with acne should choose noncomedogenic foundations and tinted moisturisers that are specifically labelled as non-comedogenic to avoid clogging pores,” Froom says.
COMBINATION SKIN CLINIQUE EVEN BETTER GLOW LIGHT REFLECTING MAKEUP
“Things to look for in foundation if you have combination skin are lightweight products that hydrate the dry areas while controlling oil in the T-Zone,” Froom says. “Combination skin often requires a foundation that can be built up in specific areas without being cakey. Lastly a satin finish is ideally as it provides a nice balance between matte and dewy, making it ideal for combination skin.
OTHER SKIN TYPES ESTÉE LAUDER DAYWEAR ANTIOXIDANT BB CREAM SPF 25
7 6 M AY 2 0 2 5
“For other skin concerns such as dry or aging skin, you should always opt for foundations that are nourishing, hydrating and gentle,” says Froom. “Make sure to look for non-comedogenic, fragrance-free products, and avoid those with harsh chemicals or alcohol, which can irritate delicate or mature skin.”

SUN PROTECTION IN THE UK: WHY IT MATTERS AND HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN
D
espite the UK’s often overcast skies, sun protection is just as important here as it is in sunnier countries. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can penetrate cloud cover and cause cumulative skin damage, even during cooler months. Understanding how sun protection works and the risks of sun exposure can help individuals make better choices for their skin health. UNDERSTANDING SPF AND UVA STAR RATINGS Sun creams, or sunscreens, offer protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which is primarily divided into UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and play a significant role in developing skin cancer, while UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to
7 8 M AY 2 0 2 5
premature ageing and marginally increasing cancer risk. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures a sunscreen’s ability to block UVB radiation. For example, SPF 30 means it would take 30 times longer for the skin to burn than if no sunscreen were applied. However, SPF does not indicate how well the sunscreen protects against UVA rays. In the UK, UVA protection is measured by the UVA star rating system, originally developed by Boots Plc. This rating ranges from 0 to 5 stars and compares the level of UVA protection relative to the UVB protection offered by the product. A 5-star rating indicates excellent, wellbalanced protection against both UVA and UVB. Consumers should look for sunscreens with a high SPF (30 or above) and a 4 or 5-star UVA rating for optimal broad-spectrum coverage. There is even

a factor 100 sunscreen available now, for example Eucerin Sun MD Actinic Control. HOW SUNSCREENS WORK Sunscreens protect the skin either by using chemical filters or physical (mineral) filters. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into harmless heat. Ingredients like avobenzone and octinoxate are common in these formulations. In contrast, physical sunscreens, such as those containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sit on the skin’s surface and reflect or scatter UV radiation. Sunscreens must be applied generously and reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Most people apply less than half the recommended amount, significantly reducing the effectiveness.
“Sunscreens must be applied generously and reapplied every two hours”
FINAL THOUGHTS Sun protection is not just for holidays abroad. In the UK, where UV levels can still be harmful yearround, regular use of high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen is crucial. Combining sunscreen with protective clothing and seeking shade during peak sun hours offers the best defence against skin damage and the long-term risk of skin cancer. Alongside this, it is advisable to have a regular skin checks. Oxona Healthcare in St Albans offer either a single lesion check, for a specific worrisome mole or lesion priced at £115. Alternatively, a full body mole and blemish check is £245. Oxona Healthcare, St Albans, AL1 1PD oxonahealth.co.uk 01727 620101
SUN DAMAGE AND SKIN CANCER UV radiation damages the DNA in skin cells. While the body can repair some of this damage, repeated exposure overwhelms repair mechanisms and can lead to mutations that cause skin cancers. There are three main types of skin cancer: 1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) – the most common and least aggressive form. It grows slowly and rarely spreads. 2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) – more aggressive than BCC, with potential to spread if untreated. 3. Malignant Melanoma – the most dangerous form, originating in pigment-producing cells. It can metastasise rapidly and be fatal if not caught early. Skin damage often begins as actinic keratoses— rough, red, scaly patches that develop in sunexposed areas. These lesions are considered M AY 2 0 2 5 7 9

David Beckham’s best fashion moments as he turns 50
Here’s a look back at the football star’s most memorable style moments… By Lara Owen
D
avid Beckham’s fashion sense is almost as iconic as his football career. Ever since he stepped out in an all-leather two-piece with his then girlfriend, Victoria, his style has become a unforgettable. Beckham not only pushed boundaries stylistically, but subverted gender stereotypes through fashion at a time when male footballers were observed through a hyper-masculine lens. The 1998 World Cup in France is still a moment fans discuss to this day. “Twenty years ago when I wore that sarong, people were shocked,” Beckham told the Telegraph in 2018. “It was an outrage; ‘why are you wearing that? What were you thinking?’ Today no one bats an eyelid if a guy wears a sarong in the street.” Beckham has been a trailblazer, influencing how British men dress for almost 30 years. As the star turns 50, we look back at his most influential fashion moments throughout the years…

2000

Beckham burst onto the scene in 1996, when on 17 August that year he scored a legendary goal for Manchester United, becoming a household name ahead of the Premier League season. Just a year later, the star began dating Spice Girls singer Victoria Adams – a fashionista in her own right – and the couple’s styles became iconic. The pair stepped out on red carpets in all things leather and

animal print, and in 2000, Beckham memorably wore a sleeveless shirt and a durag to greet the then Prince of Wales at a party for the Princes Trust. It was once of the first instances that Beckham’s ensemble garnered more attention than Victoria’s, and cemented him as a male fashion icon.
2001-2 Once the 2000s were underway, Beckham leant into the neutral beige and brown tones that were all the rage. His day-to-day uniform became a white T-shirt and jeans – and his statement accessory tended to be his jacket. Beanies and baggy puddle jeans became synonymous with the star and his relaxed aesthetic tapped into the men’s streetwear trends of the time.
2003 Following the birth of their second child Romeo in 2002, David and Victoria headed back out onto the red carpets – most memorably in matching white and rhinestone ensembles to the 2003 MTV Movie Awards. The pair were famed for their couple power dressing – being dubbed the British Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake – following the US singers’ all-denim red carpet looks in 2001. Off the carpet meanwhile, the Beckhams were still known for their coordination, sporting simple silhouettes such as jeans and blazers so as not to attract attention.
2004 This outfit formula continued into 2004, as Beckham began to wear relaxed jeans, an untucked shirt and a blazer on the red carpet. But Beckham stepped up the simple ensemble with boho beads – a big trend of the early 2000s, thanks to the likes of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss. Once Beckham showcased his bohemian necklaces alongside a V-neck white shirt on the red
carpet of a private party at the Royal Albert Hall – a whole host male British celebs started sporting the trend – from Top Gear presenters to young royals.
2005 Come 2005, Beckham went back to wearing some showstopping suits. From questionable croc print to iridescent suits, in summer of that year Beckham stepped out in a shiny plum suit with a romantic ruffled white shirt, as he and his wife left Claridge’s restaurant in London. The pair were en route to one of Elton John’s infamous star-studded soirees, and it was this moment that Victoria’s own style stuck out, as

she wore a blue and white printed Roberto Cavalli dress that caused a stir in fashion circles.
2006-7 From 2006-7 Beckham still played into his smartcasual formula day-to-day, incorporating waistcoats and shirts alongside baggy jeans. While his off-duty outfits were relaxed somewhat scruffy, he stepped up his red carpet looks, as Victoria began to find her minimalist signature style – Beckham followed suit.
2010 The words cool and casual had become synonymous with Beckham’s effortless style, and the football star’s jeans and a white-T became the go-to off-duty ensemble for celebrities across the board. Pared with some Ray-Ban aviators – the trending sunglasses shape of the 2010s – Beckham became the pinnacle of male style inspiration. On chillier days, the star sported double breasted jackets and striped scarves, still, of course, in a neutral palette.
2012 In 2012, Beckham’s style became more pared back – literally, in some cases – as the ex-footballer collaborated with H&M on a bodywear collection featuring cotton trunks and tight vests. To the launch however, Beckham layered up in a cream knitted cardigan and drainpipe jeans. Beckham’s style had become less flashy and 8 4 M AY 2 0 2 5
But upon entering a new decade, Beckham leant back into his rugged sense of style, sporting more leather and less denim and opting for black over his usual lighter hues. The star also began to wear shorter sleeves again that showed off his tattoos. It was around this time when the idea of streamlining and forging a capsule wardrobe became popular among mainstream fashion enthusiasts. And for Beckham, sticking to one colour – albeit black – made coming up with outfits that much easier.
2017 In 2017 Beckham started to dabble in a more countryfied aesthetic, sporting heritage tweed, brown suede and forest green on public appearances. It seems Beckham was channelling the surroundings of his new Cotswolds estate, that he and Victoria bought in 2016 for a reported £12 million. The family began splitting their time between Chipping Norton and their Holland Park townhouse in London, as Beckham became more interested in farming, hikes and country living.
2021 – TODAY The ‘quiet luxury’ trend kicked off in 2020 and seems to have infiltrated everybody’s wardrobe – and David Beckham’s is no exception. His smarter looks have started to lean more into traditional tailoring; opting for double breasted suit jackets over more modern sports coats. Indulging in pocket squares and pinstripes, Beckham’s style now juxtaposes the rugged countenance he became known for, often covering his tattoos with longer sleeves. Beckham’s smart style coincided with him becoming the face of Hugo Boss in May 2024. It was a somewhat unsurprising collaboration, as the sports star is no stranger to the world of fashion, having previously collaborated on collections with H&M and Kent & Curwen. As Beckham enters his 50th year, it seems his iconic style is only improving with age.

MILAN FAIR TREND REPORT 2025: It’s official, the interiors mood has been declared for 2025 – we’re entering an era of calm introspection. Mostly.
T
he design playground of the 2025 Salone del Mobile furniture and design fair, and the ever-growing Milan Design Week that blossoms around it, saw the city once more basking in interiors innovations, pioneering product design, and shifting perspectives on space. The ambiance was mindful, subdued, even tentative, chiming with the fair’s theme of ‘Thought for Humans,’ which honed in on the power of design to support wellness and bring people together. Neutrals and naturals reigned, with luxury design brands from around the world leaning into an organic palette and the materials of nature as well as carefully refining and extending their current collections, plus mixing in a few surprises along the way. Exploring Milan Design Week 2025, our eyes adjusted to a spectrum that’s been simmering in the background for a while but came into full bloom this year. Neutrals. Everywhere. From pale ivory, oat and cream to more mid-level camel, fawn and taupe, the design sphere has given itself over to earthy, grounded shades that hold onto enough lightness to energise a space to leave us feeling both elevated and serene. 2025’s defining trends emerged from a hush of calm and quiet confidence, with just enough offbeat character to keep us guessing. It was a sea of soothing shades, natural materials, soft tactility and grounded forms – designs that whispered rather than shouted. Prioritising sensory richness over visual noise, pieces tempting us to touch and invited interaction with alluring materials and irresistible surfaces. Shapes span the slick and sleek

to the enveloping, friendly, and at times strangely familiar … Rule-benders and category-dodgers emerged as ever, with styles, textures and materials on the fringes of the all-is-calm palette bringing range, dynamism, and the pleasingly unpredictable.
THE NEUTRALS: Exploring Milan Design Week 2025, our eyes adjusted to a spectrum that’s been simmering in the background for a while but came into full bloom this year. Neutrals. Everywhere. From pale ivory, oat and cream to more mid-level camel, fawn and taupe, the design sphere has given itself over to earthy, grounded shades that hold onto enough lightness to energise a space to leave us feeling both elevated and serene.
TEXTURED GLASS: It’s the time of misted and molten glass. Misted glass has a frosted or opaque finish, so light passing through it is diffused, creating a soft, less defined glow. Molten glass is filled with ripples and movement, like it’s not quite set yet (perhaps having oozed from the earth or poured forth from a volcano), most often transparent but distorting light that does pass through. Both approaches feel organic, yet toy with shadow, skewing it for a floaty, ethereal, am-I-awake effect.

LACQUERED LUXE: If you want even, uninterrupted, slickest of the slick surfaces, it’s lacquer you’ll be turning to this interiors season. Becoming more and more apparent on the decorative scene of late, it’s now glided right into the spotlight. Its silky finish negating the need for bold statement colour, the high-gloss finish itself is the main attraction as light bounces dramatically from its look-overhere polished coat. The contemporary lacquered pieces combine the traditional finish with clean, minimalist forms that hint at the sculptural with the simple shapes enhanced by impactful lustre.
SILVER LININGS: In need of the most brilliant shine and most uninterrupted sheen of them all? You’re in luck, as the metallic of 2025 is a silver-toned, chrome-y, mirror-like reflection. No longer just a throwback to retro futurism or a subtle accent, it’s now fully dominating the scene with its liquid silver-style surface turning furniture and beyond into statements that radiate high-voltage polish. Colour? We’ve all but forgotten what it is at this point as light zips across chrome’s surface, catching every curve, edge and angle with assertive precision that feels fresh, refined and fearless.
FOLDED FORMS: We’re welcoming into the fold pieces that exhibit textural tucks; those that show off how they’re artfully shaped and gathered into being. Furniture using its very construction and structure as decoration, and as a leading part of its personality. The move creates visual rhythm through pinches and pleats, and brings softness to hard materials. Such silhouette-led tactility turns each design into something almost garment-like – tailored, detailed and sensorially engaging.
MICHELIN MAGIC: While we’re talking of folds, the influence of the king of undulating layers echoed through time this year, making his presence known across a range of brands and designs. Remember… the Michelin man? You will soon, as his rounded, friendly and comfortable rolls left their imprint on the season’s standout pieces.
EXTERNAL ELEMENTS: When high-end materials and artisanal craftsmanship come together, it’s hard to resist adding just a little more. That’s why our next trend explores designs that whisper, “Just a little something extra.” A lounge chair wrapped in a second skin of leather, or a sofa calling for the warm embrace of its outer shell – these are the pieces that quietly insist on an extra layer of luxury.
WILDCARDS: There have to be some. Those designs that go against the grain, that don’t even bother looking up to see what the rest of the world is doing. Our homes – and souls – need such rule-breaking renegades, and it wouldn’t be Milan Design Week without a heavy delivery of unexpected designs which just don’t fit into a box. chaplins.co.uk

ANNIE SLOAN LAUNCHES FIVE NEW CHALK PAINT COLOURS
P
aint legend Annie Sloan CBE is excited to announce five new Chalk Paint™ colours to celebrate 35 years since she invented her revolutionary furniture paint. The collection includes two colours the colour expert has wanted to bring out in Chalk Paint for a long time – dramatic reddish-purple Tyrian Plum and Canvas, a perfect warm neutral - together with three new shades inspired by travel and art history: barely-there blush-toned Rococo White, soft muted Jaipur Pink and bold and bright Sandalwood Red. Tyrian Plum is a wonderfully sophisticated earthy dark reddish-purple colour with real warmth and depth. Canvas is a putty-tinted beige, named after the colour you will find on a painter’s canvas. A perfect neutral. Jaipur Pink is a dusty earthy pink with a softness to it. It has the look of traditional plaster – slightly muted with a timeless olde-world quality. Rococo White is the softest white with a touch of Antionette to give it just a hint of pink. It is a pretty neutral white that’s delicate and pretty. Sandalwood Red is a bright, lively colour that sits somewhere between pink and red. It’s a strong dramatic shade of coral.
9 6 M AY 2 0 2 5
“These five colours work beautifully together because they all have warm undertones. I have always been obsessed with pinks from around the world – from the bold colours of Mexico to the dusty tones of India through the soft pretty pastels of Scandinavia. Use the brights in this collection to add an eye-catching pop of colour or use the neutrals for a sophisticated elegant look.” Annie Sloan Easy to use and quick to dry, Chalk Paint is the simple way to transform furniture, floors and walls. It works on wood, metal, laminate, concrete, indoors and outdoors and can be used to create a variety of different decorative paint effects. anniesloan.com

omeware brand Sophie Allport is delighted to announce an official partnership with The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) for its highly anticipated 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show collection. This exclusive RHS-licensed collection offers customers an expanded range of limited-edition memorabilia that celebrates all things RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including a mug (available in standard and large sizes), small tray, cotton tea towel, signed print, and cotton tote bag. The 2025 design draws inspiration from Sophie’s love of English cottage gardens, bursting with beautiful florals, including alliums, sweet peas, foxgloves, and bearded irises. It features a charming vegetable patch, a greenhouse brimming with homegrown goodness, and a picturesque shepherd’s hut as its centrepiece. Adding a playful touch and completing the design are Sophie’s illustrations of a Jack Russell, a Golden Retriever,

and a Yorkshire Terrier - a nod to the first RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden which is a dogfriendly design. Designer and founder Sophie Allport shared her excitement: “We’re thrilled to be back at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it’s always the highlight of our year. This year marks our 15th year at the show, and partnering with the RHS for the first time makes it even more special as we support the UK’s leading gardening charity. “As a dog lover, when I heard about Monty Don designing a dog-friendly garden for the RHS, I knew I had to include a few of our furry friends in the design. It’s brought personality and charm to the artwork. This might just be my favourite RHS Chelsea Flower Show collection yet!” Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager, RHS adds: “Sophie Allport is rightly admired for her skill in developing designs that draw on classic British heritage with taste, style and humour – and this collection is a truly inspired example of that skill. The new Sophie Allport RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025 collection, brings the joy and abundance of gardening, and the fun of gardening with help from your furry friends, into the home and will appeal to gardeners, dog and nature lovers – and in fact anyone who appreciates items that combine usefulness with attractive and original design.”
THE DETAILS Sophie Allport RHS Chelsea Flower Show collection will be available to purchase at the Sophie Allport stand during the show and online at sophieallport.com.
