Hertfordshire is well known for its excellent flower nurseries and garden centres, offering everything from seasonal bedding plants to specialist roses, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental trees. Across the county, gardeners can find both large established centres and smaller independent nurseries that focus on high-quality plants and expert advice. These nurseries play an important role in supporting local horticulture and encouraging gardening throughout the region.

Among the most popular destinations is Aylett Nurseries in St Albans, one of Hertfordshire’s best-known garden centres. It is famous for its colourful seasonal displays, Christmas events, and wide selection of flowers and garden plants. The nursery has built a strong reputation for quality and customer service over many years.

Another respected nursery is Shantock Nurseries Ltd near Hemel Hempstead. This family-run nursery is particularly appreciated for its healthy plants, hanging baskets, and friendly atmosphere. Local gardeners often visit for spring and summer flowering plants as well as practical gardening advice.

Specialist nurseries are also an important part of Hertfordshire’s gardening culture. Leafy Oak Nursery near Ware offers a wide range of plants and shrubs, while Daisy Roots in Hertford specialises in hardy perennials and ornamental

grasses. Daisy Roots has even won RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medals for its displays and plant quality.

Other notable businesses include Vanstone Park Garden Centre in Codicote, The Hertfordshire Garden Centre near Redbourn, and Four Acres Nursery near Berkhamsted. These nurseries stock a wide variety of flowers, trees, herbs, and decorative plants suitable for gardens of all sizes.

Hertfordshire also supports independent florists and flower farms such as Flos Flower Farm which provide locally grown flowers and bespoke floral arrangements.

Harkness Roses, based in Hitchin, has earned an international reputation for developing healthy and colourful rose varieties. The company has been producing roses since the nineteenth century and remains closely associated with British horticulture. Historically, the county was also home to the famous Rivers Nursery, which became known for introducing long-flowering roses and cultivating thousands of fruit trees during its peak years.

Overall, Hertfordshire flower nurseries combine tradition, expertise, and creativity. Whether customers are experienced gardeners or beginners, these nurseries provide inspiration, expert knowledge, and beautiful plants that help gardens across the county flourish throughout the year.

Presenting the new Ferrari Amalfi Spider

The new Ferrari Amalfi Spider has been unveiled: a V8 2+ spider with a frontmid-mounted engine that embodies the perfect balance between contemporary sportiness and versatility within the Ferrari range. Designed for those who want a more dynamic driving experience without compromising comfort or style, the Ferrari Amalfi Spider combines outstanding performance with the unique pleasure of open-top motoring, making every journey more engaging.

The engine of the Ferrari Amalfi Spider, like that of the Ferrari Amalfi, represents the latest evolution of the 3855-cc V8 twin-turbo from the F154 family –the model that has won the most international awards in recent automotive history. In this configuration, the engine has been optimised to deliver a maximum output of 640 hp at 7,500 rpm, with a specific power output of 166 hp/l and a redline raised to 7,600 rpm, allowing it to get the most out of its continuously increasing power curve.

The eight-speed dual-clutch oil-bath transmission, first introduced on the SF90 Stradale to widespread acclaim, has been further optimised with a more powerful control unit and enhanced integration with the engine software, improving the smoothness and speed of gear changes. For

the first time in a Ferrari engine, a low-viscosity oil has been introduced, reducing cold resistance by 30% compared to the previous version, improving warm-up efficiency.

Sound design also received special attention: a new silencer layout was developed to meet the strictest noise emission regulations, without compromising Ferrari’s signature tone. Sound control is managed by a new proportionally controlled bypass valve with dedicated maps to adapt the exhaust note to different driving conditions.

“The

perfect balance between contemporary sportiness and versatility within the Ferrari range”

EXTERIOR

The silhouette is elegant, fluid and instantly recognisable, whether the roof is open or closed. The design language blends refinement and energy, taking shape as a monolithic, sleek and sculptural speedform that gives the car a modern, fresh character while retaining unrivalled elegance.

The car exemplifies the Ferrari sporting lifestyle in an open-top configuration: a seamless blend of performance, driving pleasure, ease of use and versatility. The soft top, a choice that enhances the car’s versatile character by giving it a clear and distinctive position within the Prancing Horse range, adds a more expressive character through a wide range of personalisation options - the soft top is available in four tailor-made fabric colours and two technical fabric options, inspired by the car’s overall colour mood.

With the Ferrari Amalfi Spider, Ferrari introduces the new Rosso Tramonto colour, an exclusive shade that enriches the chromatic journey begun with Verde Costiera, inspired by the hues of the Amalfi Coast. This new shade, intense yet refined, is distinguished by subtle orange undertones that evoke the warm light of the setting sun, igniting the coast’s most iconic vistas.

INTERIOR

The interior of the Ferrari Amalfi Spider carries forward the same concept of elegance. The interior design is deliberately clean, minimalist and contemporary. The door panels introduce a sail motif – sculptural elements that integrate the handles and armrests.

“The car exemplifies the Ferrari sporting lifestyle in an opentop configuration: a seamless blend of performance, driving pleasure, ease of use and versatility”

Personalisation also extends to the interior, with selected components trimmed in the same fabric as the soft top, including the tonneau cover, door panels and seatbacks, creating an unprecedented stylistic continuity between exterior and cockpit even with the roof stowed.

Like the Ferrari Amalfi, the cabin features a dual-cockpit layout and an evolved driver–car interface. Key elements include the steering wheel with physical buttons, the return of the iconic start button, the integrated central display, and controls designed for natural interaction even during the most dynamic driving.

The controls are functionally distributed: at the centre of the dashboard, a 10.25” capacitive display allows the driver and passenger to access the main functions: multimedia, radio, phone, screen mirroring, climate control, seat adjustments, and vehicle settings. Finally, the 8.8” passenger display offers a true co-driver experience, showing parameters such as G-forces and engine revs. The car is also equipped with the MyFerrari Connect system, which allows remote monitoring of the vehicle’s status via a dedicated app.

The 2+ configuration enhances practicality, with rear seats suitable for travelling with children or increasing load capacity. Completing the experience, an integrated wind deflector built into the rear bench backrest, and operated at the touch of a button, improves comfort by reducing turbulence during open-top driving.

The Ferrari Amalfi Spider adopts an architecture designed to deliver a precise, responsive and engaging open-air driving experience - where every system works in harmony to ensure maximum control and driving pleasure – regardless of road conditions or driving style.

OPENING THIS MONTH HITCHIN LAVENDER

20 June - 7 August 2026

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender

which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

“Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off”

PLANTING & GROWING

Our top tips for growing lavender at home:

Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t

necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

“Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by

the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic”

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK?

There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for

domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.

Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are

kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared away by their owners.

The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings.

Professional photography is allowed anytime during our general opening hours but is subject to an additional fee.

Summer at The Denton in Berkhamsted

This summer, Artemis is giving locals and visitors a fresh reason to make an occasion of dining in Berkhamsted, with a seasonal menu and elegant setting that feel special without needing to travel further afield.

Set within The Denton, Artemis has quickly become one of the town’s most appealing dining spots, offering the kind of polished but welcoming experience that works just as well for a relaxed lunch as it does for a celebratory dinner.

Led by Head Chef Enrico Lizzio, the kitchen brings a modern European style together with the warmth of Enrico’s Italian upbringing, resulting in food that feels expressive and full of character.

There is a personal quality to Enrico’s cooking that makes Artemis feel instantly inviting. His changing specials allow the menu to follow the mood of the season, from lighter summer dishes and beautifully presented plates made for longer afternoons around the table, to the comforting autumn and winter favourites that reflect his respect for tradition, including his much-loved tagliatelle Bolognese, made as his mother once prepared it.

Guests have already described Artemis as “high end dining without the stiffness”, which captures its appeal particularly well. The restaurant feels stylish and considered without ever becoming intimidating, with attentive service and an

atmosphere that makes people feel looked after rather than overawed. It is the sort of place that suits a long overdue catch-up as much as an evening booked with purpose, which is perhaps why it is beginning to feel like one of Berkhamsted’s most enjoyable discoveries.

Part of the pleasure of visiting Artemis is discovering its setting. The restaurant is part of The Denton, Elysian Residences’ beautifully designed Berkhamsted residence, where elegant interiors and landscaped gardens create a backdrop that feels luxurious without being showy. While The Denton has been created for home owners over 65, it is also becoming increasingly connected with the wider town, opening its doors through its restaurant and welcoming shared spaces.

Berkhamsted is at its most charming in summer. The high street has long been loved for its independent businesses, while the nearby Chilterns offer an easy escape for those looking to make the most of a warm day. The Denton sits comfortably within that way of life, offering somewhere to meet friends, enjoy good food or spend time in beautiful surroundings close to the heart of the town.

The summer calendar adds another reason to visit, with a programme of events planned to bring the wider community into The Denton throughout the season. Locals can keep an eye out for upcoming music nights, barbecues, wellness events and theatre productions, each designed to make the most of the elegant spaces and create relaxed opportunities to enjoy the atmosphere. There is also a gentle focus on wellbeing woven through The Denton, with space for private gatherings and activities such as yoga or Pilates. Its calm interiors lend themselves naturally to smaller events and local groups, while the restaurant makes it an attractive choice for breakfast meetings or celebrations that deserve somewhere more elegant than the usual local venue.

This summer, Artemis may be the first reason to visit, but The Denton offers plenty more to discover once you arrive. With its growing connection to the local community, it brings a stylish new dimension to Berkhamsted life, offering a place that feels aspirational while still being genuinely welcoming.

The market is being delivered in partnership with The Hertfordshire Barrow Boy, a fourthgeneration family-run business with roots in London’s historic markets of Holborn and Russell Square. With more than 75 years of trading heritage, the Barrow Boy has become a familiar name across Hertfordshire’s local food scene.

Founder Ben shared his enthusiasm for the launch: “I’m looking forward to launching the Old Hatfield Farmers Market in Salisbury Square and I’m particularly excited to see the community of Old Hatfield come together to experience our quality fresh produce and craft traders.”

important milestone for the wider regeneration of Salisbury Square, a flagship project by Gascoyne Estates that blends historic character with a renewed focus on community life. Designed as a flexible, people-first space, the square is set to host regular events and activities that bring people together and support local enterprise.

For the Estate, this moment represents more than just a new event – it is the realisation of a long-term vision.

James Rayner, Estate Director for Hatfield Park said: “Seeing Salisbury Square come to life in this way is incredibly special. The farmers market is exactly the kind of activity we envisaged – something that celebrates local producers, creates reasons for people to come together, and helps build a strong, connected community in Old Hatfield. It reflects our ambition to create places that are not only beautiful, but genuinely lived in and enjoyed.”

The market will sit alongside a growing programme of cultural and seasonal activity across Old Hatfield, helping to position Salisbury Square as a welcoming destination where heritage and modern life meet.

With its mix of independent traders, community atmosphere and carefully curated setting, the Old Hatfield Farmers Market promises to become a regular highlight of the local calendar – and a new focal point for residents and visitors alike. hatfield-house.co.uk

Hertfordshire’s love affair with the RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Several recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show winners have strong Hertfordshire connections, particularly through landscaping firms and designers based in the county.

One of the best-known is Kate Gould Gardens, led by award-winning designer Kate Gould. Based in Radlett, Kate has become one of the most successful Chelsea designers of recent years, winning multiple RHS Gold Medals as well as “Best in Show” and category awards. Her practice specialises in lush urban gardens and contemporary outdoor spaces across London and the South East.

Kate Gould’s Chelsea successes include the 2017 “City Living” garden, which won both a Gold Medal and Best Fresh Garden. The design explored how green spaces could be integrated into dense urban environments, using layered planting and wildlife-friendly ideas. In 2022, her garden “Out of the Shadows” won a Gold Medal, Best Sanctuary Garden and Best Construction award, praised for its calming atmosphere and climate-conscious planting.

Another Hertfordshire success story is Landesigns, the specialist landscaping company founded by Ben Wiggins. Based in Hemel Hempstead, the company has helped construct several RHS Chelsea medal-winning gardens in recent years, earning recognition for high-quality craftsmanship and sustainable landscaping. Their projects have included Gold Medal-winning gardens and RHS Environmental Innovation Award winners.

Hertfordshire has also been linked to the studio Hudson De Maeijer, run by Jane and Erik Hudson De Maeijer. The practice, operating between

Hertfordshire and London, has exhibited several RHS Chelsea gardens and become known for naturalistic planting and contemporary landscape design.

Beyond the county itself, influential Chelsea winners continue to inspire Hertfordshire designers. Andy Sturgeon won Best Show Garden in 2019 with “The M&G Garden,” while in 2024 Ula Maria won Best Show Garden for the “Muscular Dystrophy UK – Forest Bathing Garden.” Their work reflects modern Chelsea themes such as biodiversity, wellbeing and climate resilience.

Together, these award-winning designers and businesses have helped establish Hertfordshire as an important centre for innovative garden design and landscaping linked to Britain’s most prestigious flower show.

HERTFORDSHIRE ALE TAPPED AT PARLIAMENT’S STRANGERS’ BAR

One of Hertfordshire’s best-selling ales has been served at Strangers’ Bar in the Houses of Parliament, with MPs raising glasses to the local brew.

Side Pocket for a Toad, Tring Brewery’s flagship beer, was nominated through the parliamentary Guest Beer initiative by Victoria Collins, MP for Harpenden and Berkhamsted.

As part of the nomination, Tring Brewery beer sommelier Jared Ward was invited to Parliament for a tour of Westminster, and a tipple of ‘Toad’ at Strangers’ Bar - Parliament’s private pub.

Named according to Tring Brewery’s theme of local legend, Side Pocket for a Toad takes its’ title from an old-Hertfordshire saying which alludes to a sense of uselessness, akin to a ‘chocolate tea pot’. Far from useless as a beverage, ‘Side Pocket’ celebrated a quarter-century of brewing last year and was proclaimed ‘Hertfordshire Beer of the Year’ at the St. Albans Beer and Cider Festival in

November.

Jared Ward, beer sommelier at Tring Brewery, commented on the occasion:

“To have Side Pocket for a Toad nominated for service at Westminster is truly historic. We’d like to thank Victoria Collins for her work in getting Tring ale into Strangers Bar.”

Victoria Collins, LibDem MP for Harpenden and Berkhamsted, remarked:

“It has been great to be able to champion a brewery within the Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency in Tring Brewery. It was such fun to pour a pint of Side Pocket for a Toad in Strangers’ Bar. Here’s to supporting local.”

Tring Brewery’s parliamentary visit comes at a time when conversations in the beer industry are dominated by discussions concerning on-trade VAT relief, Market Access Review for independent brewers and consideration for Cask Beer to recognised as an asset of Intangible Cultural Heritage - with each topic raised by Jared at Strangers’ Bar.

Though the Tring Brewery’s visit to the Houses of Parliament has concluded, Side Pocket for a Toad will continue to be served at Strangers’ Bar in weeks to come, with cellars stocked with four more casks of ‘Hertfordshire gold’.

Here’s to local ale poured at the heart of Westminster. Cheers! tringbrewery.co.uk

The art of bespoke jewellery

Bespoke jewellery offers the rare opportunity to create something entirely individual, a piece shaped with intention and crafted to endure for generations.

At Baker Brothers, bespoke design is approached as a considered and collaborative process. Every commission begins with conversation, allowing time to understand the story behind the piece and the person it is intended for. Whether marking an engagement, celebrating achievement or honouring a personal milestone, the journey is guided by meaning rather than momentary trend, ensuring the finished piece feels personal from the very beginning.

Ideas evolve naturally through discussion and refinement, gradually taking form through sketch and design development. Proportion, balance and wearability are considered alongside aesthetic vision, ensuring each creation integrates effortlessly into everyday life rather than being reserved solely for occasion. Every element, from precious metal to setting style, is selected with care, allowing the final design to achieve quiet sophistication and lasting relevance.

The Baker Brothers Diamond Grade Gemstone selection represents one of the defining moments within the bespoke journey. While diamonds are universally assessed according to

the 4Cs, these recognised measures form only the foundation of selection at Baker Brothers.

Through the Baker Brothers Diamond Grade, each stone is considered beyond certification to identify those distinguished by exceptional balance, brilliance and integrity. Only around twenty per cent are selected each year, forming a collection composed exclusively of exceptional gemstones and offering confidence whatever size or grade is chosen.

Craftmanship

From initial concept to final creation, every stage is approached with patience and precision. Master jewellers bring each design to life using time-honoured techniques supported by modern innovation, carefully shaping, setting and finishing every detail by hand. The result is jewellery distinguished not only by refinement, but by the emotion and meaning it carries.

Begin your bespoke journey

The bespoke experience awaits at our boutique, where private consultations offer dedicated time to explore ideas and possibilities.

Whether arriving with a clear vision or the beginnings of an idea, each commission unfolds at its own pace, resulting in a piece created to be worn, treasured and passed from one generation to the next.

The Art of Possibility: Henry Fraser’s Extraordinary Vision

In an age captivated by narratives of resilience, few stories resonate with the quiet power and authenticity of Henry Fraser’s. Yet to define Fraser solely through adversity would be to overlook the remarkable achievement at the heart of his work: art that transcends circumstance and speaks directly to the human spirit.

Paralysed from the shoulders down following a life-changing diving accident in 2009, Fraser has transformed what many would regard as limitation into an extraordinary creative language. Teaching himself to draw and paint using a brush held in his mouth, he has built a body of work distinguished not by its method, but by its emotional depth, vibrant energy and technical confidence.

His paintings are immediately recognisable. Bold wildlife portraits, luminous landscapes and expressive abstracts pulse with colour and movement, revealing an artist fascinated by beauty, optimism and the natural world. There is a striking absence of self-pity in Fraser’s visual vocabulary. Instead, his canvases celebrate possibility. Animals emerge with personality and presence; colours radiate with an almost joyful intensity. Each piece feels less like a statement about disability and more like an affirmation of life itself.

What makes Fraser particularly compelling within today’s cultural landscape is his refusal to be confined by labels. Artist, author, speaker and

“Fraser has transformed what many would regard as limitation into an extraordinary creative language”

advocate, he inhabits each role with the same clarity of purpose. His bestselling books explore themes of acceptance, perspective and personal growth, while his public speaking engagements have inspired audiences worldwide. Yet art remains the purest expression of his philosophy: that creativity can flourish even in the most unexpected circumstances. There is also a refreshing honesty to Fraser’s work. The slight imperfections that naturally accompany mouth painting are not concealed but embraced, lending each piece a sense of humanity and authenticity. In a world increasingly polished by algorithms and digital perfection, that sincerity feels profoundly contemporary.

Henry Fraser’s greatest achievement is not that he paints with his mouth. It is that he has created a distinctive artistic voice that compels us to look beyond limitation and toward possibility. His work reminds us that creativity is not determined by physical capability, but by imagination, courage and an unwavering commitment to seeing beauty where others might not. henryfraserart.com

FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:

Across many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions.

This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top.

In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity.

Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can

WHO GETS AHEAD?

play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors.

“The

higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system.

As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background – and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

PREPPED FOR LIFE

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School, set in 15 acres of leafy grounds in Northwood, delivers the best of both worlds: a strong academic tradition with an extensive range of co-curricular and sporting activities. Located just minutes from Merchant Taylors’ senior school, it provides an excellent all-through option for high-achieving pupils.

The new Head, Miles Chester, who joined in September, brings extensive experience and a fresh, dynamic approach to the school. He is proud of the prep school’s quality of teaching and the holistic education it offers. “Through an enriched curriculum, we foster every opportunity for pupils to develop their individual potential, nurturing their unique passions, interests and aspirations. The foundation we provide ensures they are equipped with the skills and confidence to transition seamlessly to senior school,” said Mr. Chester.

The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos. From the very beginning, teachers take the time to get to know each pupil and their abilities, within a small-class setting. This allows enquiring minds to develop in an

environment where each pupil is given a sense of belonging that helps them to achieve.

Through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs and activities, boys are encouraged to try new things and explore their talents and creativity. The school uses sport to reinforce its ethos and to instil discipline, teamwork, fair play, responsibility and respect.

Having the senior school nearby offers numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in sports, music and academics. With pupils now transitioning to senior school at the end of Year 6, the school is expanding its intake for Year 3 from September 2026. “This is a great opportunity for able pupils with potential to join our school and benefit from a well-balanced education and smooth transition to the senior school”, Mr Chester added.

Manor Lodge Head Takes the Lead in

Tackling Excessive Screen Time Among Children

Alyson Lobo, Head Teacher of Manor Lodge School, is leading a growing movement to tackle excessive screen use among young children. While the Government’s January 2026 guidance recommends banning mobile phones during the school day to create calmer classrooms, Mrs Lobo believes this does not go far enough. “This guidance is a step in the right direction, but it simply isn’t enough,” she said. “Smartphones are ‘experience blockers’, and children have a right to a full, real childhood.”

Mrs Lobo launched the “Say No to Smartphone” campaign in September 2025, well ahead of national policy. The initiative encourages families to prioritise play, outdoor activity and real-life interaction over screen use. The impact at Manor Lodge has been immediate, with noticeable improvements in focus, engagement and social interaction.

The campaign is now expanding beyond the school, bringing together a coalition of leading independent schools including St Margaret’s School, St Columba’s College, York House, Haberdashers’, Aldenham Prep and Abbot’s Hill. Together, they are committing to shared pledges aimed at reducing passive screen time and supporting children’s wellbeing.

Parents play a central role. More than 70% of Manor Lodge families have signed a pledge to reduce screen use at home, with many also writing

to MPs to call for stronger national action. Mrs Lobo’s initiative moving forward is to encourage families to go further, she’ll be suggesting a ‘one device per family’ approach so screen time becomes shared rather than isolating.

“At Manor Lodge it is not enough to just sign a pledge – we must live it,” she says. Alongside this, the school is rethinking the role of technology in education. Screens are used selectively, only where they genuinely enhance learning. Teaching prioritises reading, handwriting, oracy and number fluency, alongside storytelling, discussion and debate. “We are going back to basics” Mrs Lobo explains. Manor Lodge is not “anti-technology” but instead champions purposeful IT, using advanced tools such as augmented reality only where they add genuine value. The aim is to ensure technology supports learning without displacing meaningful human interaction. This philosophy sits within the school’s wider ethos of placing childhood at the centre of education.

Manor Lodge prides itself on making Learning the Greatest Adventure. Inspired by Scandinavian models, Manor Lodge offers an immersive environment where outdoor learning is integral. Pupils explore woodland, tend allotments, and learn through hands-on experiences that build independence, confidence and critical thinking.

“Every child deserves a childhood,” says Mrs Lobo. “If we act together, we can create a healthier digital culture and ensure children enter the digital world from a position of strength.” manorlodgeschool.com

SARUM HALL SCHOOL STEPS UP FOR NOAH’S ARK

Sarum Hall School demonstrated its strong sense of community and commitment to supporting others last term, raising vital funds for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice through two creative, energetic and inspiring fundraising events.

In March, members of staff took on an ambitious sponsored half-marathon walk across London. Covering an impressive 13.1 miles, the group set off from Big Ben and made their way back to Belsize Park, showing determination and teamwork throughout the challenge. Alongside raising much-needed funds, the walk also helped increase awareness of the important work carried out by the hospice, which supports children with life-limiting conditions and provides care and guidance for their families.

The initiative was led by Miss Burrows, alongside Mr Laws and Miss Furlong, who wanted to contribute personally to the school’s charitable efforts and encourage the wider community to get involved. Reflecting on the challenge, Miss Burrows explained that the idea developed from a previous group walk and that transforming it into a fundraising event “felt like the perfect way” to combine teamwork, wellbeing and support for a meaningful cause.

At the same time, pupils embraced fundraising with equal enthusiasm during a lively and colourful

charity day organised by Stuart House. Inspired by the theme of ‘Ark’, pupils arrived at school wearing a variety of animal-themed accessories and costumes, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere across the school.

Form Time discussions encouraged thoughtful reflection on the idea of an ark as a symbol of belonging, inclusion and support. Pupils explored the importance of celebrating diversity and recognising the value of every individual within a community.

Thanks to the combined efforts of staff, pupils and families, the school has so far raised more than £12,500. Faye, from the hospice, praised Sarum Hall’s dedication, describing the fundraising efforts as “incredibly moving” and commending the whole community for the positive difference they have made.

Mystic Moods: Inside the Studio of a FabricLed Womenswear Practice

Mystic Moods is a British studio-led fashion brand founded by Alina Stanila, producing limited-run garments in England.

At the centre of the practice is a fabric-led approach — where material, rather than concept, determines how each piece takes form.

Development begins directly with cloth. Fabric is handled, tested, and altered before any garment is defined. Surfaces are painted, layered, or left untouched depending on how they respond. The process is observational — guided by texture, weight, and movement rather than a fixed outcome. What emerges is not designed in advance, but found through interaction.

The studio works through return rather than constant change. The same materials, silhouettes, and techniques are revisited — adjusted slightly each time. This repetition allows garments to be refined gradually, building a consistent visual language without relying on seasonal direction.

Differences appear through subtle shifts in fabric, proportion, and construction.

Garments are developed once the fabric establishes direction.

Structure is introduced with restraint — seams, gathers, and volume are used to guide how the material moves. Construction is treated as a continuation of the textile process, not a separate stage. Each piece is resolved through making, with decisions happening in real time.

Work moves fluidly between stages.

Textile development, pattern cutting, and construction overlap — allowing pieces to be revisited and adjusted as they evolve. There is no strict sequence, only a continuous process of refinement.

This approach allows the collection to build as an ongoing body of work rather than a series of separate releases.

The garments are presented without excess They are worn simply, allowing fabric, form, and movement to remain the focus. Imagery reflects the same approach as the making — quiet, direct, and material-led.

“I work directly with fabric — testing, adjusting, and observing how it responds. Nothing is fully predetermined. Each piece develops through process, becoming something intentional over time.”

Crafted for Everyday, beautifully

Founded on the belief that true luxury lies in the details, Siena Wolf is a fine leather goods house where contemporary design meets Italian craftsmanship.

Each handbag is crafted in Italy by skilled artisans using premium materials. From precise stitching and hand painted edges to bespoke hardware developed exclusively for the brand, every element is approached with intention and care.

At Siena Wolf, craftsmanship is not simply part of the process, it is the foundation of everything created. The brand was established with a desire to create pieces designed to endure both aesthetically and functionally. Rather than being defined by seasons alone, Siena Wolf focuses on refined silhouettes, harmonious lines, and thoughtful details that allow each design to feel timeless yet relevant to modern life.

reflects a deliberate approach to luxury. This commitment not only preserves the integrity of the craftsmanship but supports a more responsible approach to creation. One rooted in thoughtful production, reduced waste, and enduring design.

Designed with both beauty and practicality in mind, the collection reflects a belief that luxury should feel as effortless as it is refined.

“I wanted to create pieces that feel beautiful to live with every day, not simply for a season, but for years to come,” says founder Lori Tyberg.

The award winning No. 14 Shoulder Bag, recipient of the Accessories Council Design Excellence Award, exemplifies the brand’s philosophy through its understated elegance, custom turn lock closure, and versatility for everyday use.

Designed to move seamlessly through daily life while maintaining a sense of elegance, Siena Wolf handbags are created not simply as accessories, but as lasting companions. Pieces to be worn, appreciated, and carried beautifully for years to come.

Soft Focus Beauty

2026’s blurred-glamour trend softens perfection into something more modern, flattering and quietly cinematic.

Sharp contour, ultra-defined features and mirror-like finishes are beginning to lose ground in 2026, making way for a softer, more diffused approach to beauty. The emerging trend, known as Soft Focus Beauty, takes inspiration from analogue photography, velvet textures and filtered light – creating makeup that looks polished, flattering and deliberately unfussy.

At its core, the aesthetic is about blur rather than precision. Skin appears smooth but not glossy, colour is gently hazed around the eyes and cheeks, and lips take on a softened, lived-in finish. Rather than striving for crisp definition or high-impact glamour, Soft Focus Beauty embraces dimension that feels atmospheric, wearable and subtly romantic.

The trend draws influence from several directions: the muted glamour of 1990s editorial beauty, the return of matte-but-healthy skin, and

a growing appetite for makeup that performs well both in real life and on camera. In an era shaped by constant digital visibility, heavily sculpted makeup can appear increasingly harsh. Soft Focus Beauty offers an alternative – refined, forgiving and effortlessly photogenic.

Texture is central to the look. Powder products are being reconsidered, not as tools for flattening the complexion but for creating a velvety, lightdiffusing finish. Foundations lean satin or soft matte rather than dewy, gently evening tone while maintaining movement in the skin. Blush is blended broadly across cheeks and temples, creating a natural wash of colour rather than a sharply placed accent.

Eye makeup follows a similar philosophy. Liners are smudged rather than graphic, shadows are softly layered in taupe, rose, cocoa and muted plum tones, and lashes appear defined

without looking overly engineered. Brows remain groomed but slightly relaxed, stepping away from the laminated, overly structured aesthetic that dominated previous seasons.

What makes the trend particularly wearable is its adaptability. Soft Focus Beauty can be pared back for everyday use or intensified for evening without losing its essential softness. A blurred berry lip, softly smoked eye or velvety complexion translates easily from office settings to dinners, events and travel routines. It feels elevated without demanding perfection.

There is also a practical appeal to the aesthetic. Diffused textures tend to be forgiving throughout the day, fading gracefully rather than separating or appearing overly rigid. Application is intuitive: fingers, fluffy brushes and layered creams help create the softly blended effect. The emphasis is not on technical precision but on creating harmony across the face.

Ultimately, Soft Focus Beauty reflects a wider shift in contemporary luxury. Beauty is becoming less about conspicuous transformation and more about atmosphere, texture and ease. In place of overt perfection comes something gentler, more nuanced and arguably more modern. Soft Focus Beauty captures that mood precisely – polished without severity, flattering without excess and unmistakably current.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II: HER LIFE IN STYLE

The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace

During 2026, to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, The King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace plays host to the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of the late Queen’s fashion ever mounted.

Through approximately 200 items, around half on display for the first time, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style will chart the remarkable story of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch through clothing worn in all ten decades of her life: from birth to adulthood, from princess to queen, and from offduty style to diplomatic dressing for the global stage.

Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion archive is one of the largest and most important surviving

collections of 20th-century British fashion. Alongside clothing, jewellery, hats, shoes and accessories, visitors can discover never-before-seen design sketches, fabric samples and handwritten correspondence that reveal the behind-the-scenes process of dressing the most famous woman in the world and shed new light on the late Queen’s close involvement in the creation of her wardrobe.

From birth, Princess Elizabeth’s clothing was a topic of national fascination. On show for the first time will be one of the earliest surviving pieces of couture from her childhood wardrobe: the silver lamé and tulle bridesmaid dress, designed by Edward Molyneux, that she wore aged eight for the 1934 wedding of her uncle, the Duke of Kent,

As British couture rose to prominence in the 1940s, Princess Elizabeth began working with Norman Hartnell, who became her most influential designer over the next three decades. His position as Britain’s leading couturier was cemented when he was chosen to design her wedding dress in 1947 and her Coronation dress in 1953, both of which will be on display.

Eveningwear was a vital component of the Queen’s wardrobe, and visitors will see stunning examples that reflect the evolution of fashion trends throughout her long reign – from the crinoline-skirted gowns of the 1950s by Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amiesto fluid, vibrantly printed dresses by Ian Thomas that capture the relaxed glamour of the 1970s, on show for the first time. The exhibition will explore the Queen’s use of diplomatically significant emblems and colours in her wardrobe for overseas tours, as shown in an ingenious white gown designed by Norman Hartnell for a 1961 State Banquet in Karachi, which incorporates Pakistan’s national colours through a dramatic emerald-green pleat cascading down the back.

In her later years, Queen Elizabeth became as recognisable for her off-duty style and classic British tailoring as she was for her couture gowns. From impeccably cut riding jackets to tartan skirts and silk headscarves, visitors will see never-beforedisplayed examples other practical everyday style, which continues to inspire contemporary designers to this day.

Caroline de Guitaut, exhibition curator and Surveyor of The King’s Works of Art, said: ‘Over the course of Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkably long reign, her distinctive style became instantly recognisable around the world, bolstering the British fashion industry and influencing generations of designers and couturiers.”

“Only now, as the late Queen’s fashion archive comes under the care of Royal Collection Trust, can we tell the story of a lifetime of thoughtful

style choices – from her hands-on role and understanding of the soft power behind her clothing, to the exceptional craftsmanship behind each garment. In the year that she would have turned 100 years old, this exhibition will be a celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s uniquely British style and her enduring fashion legacy.”

An official publication to mark the centenary, Queen Elizabeth II: Fashion and Style, will accompany the exhibition. Written by the exhibition curator Caroline de Guitaut and featuring contributions by fashion experts and designers, the book will explore the late Queen’s fashion archive and her lifelong championing of the British fashion industry in unprecedented detail.

HOW TO RUN WITHOUT DAMAGING YOUR KNEES

Running is one of the most effective and accessible forms of exercise, but it also places repetitive stress on the joints. As an orthopaedic surgeon, I frequently see runners who wish to continue their activity despite some discomfort.

Hip and knee pain can have different causes, including: cartilage wear (early osteoarthritis), tendon inflammation (tendinitis), ligament strain, or muscle imbalance or weakness. Ignoring symptoms can lead to chronic conditions requiring prolonged treatment. In this article, I will give some top tips to avoid injuries and to run safely – including if you have some mild knee pain.

TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES

• Footwear

Choose supportive, well-cushioned shoes and replace them every 500–700 km. Consider gait analysis to select appropriate footwear.

• Strength Training

Weak muscles lead to increased joint load. Strengthening key muscle groups helps stabilise joints. Try to incorporate cross-training and lowimpact activities.

• Technique

Form can make a big difference: avoid overstriding, maintain a slightly higher cadence and land softly with controlled impact.

• Choose the Right Surface

Hard surfaces like concrete increase joint impact. Whenever possible run on softer surfaces like grass, trails, or tracks, but avoid uneven terrain if balance or stability is an issue.

• Listen to your body

One of the most common mistakes is increasing mileage too quickly. Don’t increase weekly running distance by more than 10%, and allow recovery days between runs. Make sure you always do a proper warm-up so

“Strengthening key muscle groups helps stabilise joints. Try to incorporate cross-training and low-impact activities”

you can prepare your joints. It may be worth also considering knee braces or taping, orthotics (can correct biomechanical issues) and physiotherapy (for muscle imbalances and flexibility).

Running with hip and knee problems is not always contraindicated, but it requires a thoughtful and disciplined approach. Prevention, early management, and attention to biomechanics are key. If pain persists or worsens, consulting an orthopaedic specialist is essential to avoid longterm joint damage. With the right precautions, many runners can continue to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running while protecting their joint health.

USM HALLER: Every Home’s best friend

The best homes, while having a character of their own, are intentionally organised around the lives, passions, and projects of the people who live within them. They make our favourite pastimes more accessible and daily activities more doable, from family life to plant life. Now, is there a surefire way to ensure that your home achieves the aforementioned? While there is no exact science, may we introduce you to a Swiss one instead?

USM have been solving the problems of the furniture world with the same simple solution

for nearly 65 years: their patented Haller system. Designed by the eponymous Fritz Haller, you can find a use case for USM in just about any walk of life – from multinational office floors to your very first apartment, and every setting in between. Thanks to its near-infinite number of configurations, which can be placed anywhere there are four walls and a ceiling (honestly, even that isn’t really a requirement), it makes short and stylish work of any task given to it. But just in case you can’t picture it, here are five ways the Haller system can instantly upgrade your home experience.

THE CARE-FREE CREATOR:

Crafting something in the comfort of your own home is among the most satisfying activities in the catalogue of hobbies. However, it truly begins with putting together a space that makes making easier – one that optimises your interiors so you can sew, stitch, and create to your heart’s content without worrying about where your next piece of fabric or dab of paint is going to go.

“Good design is made to be shared with the ones you love. As a third-generation family business, it’s something of a specialist subject of ours”

Our first solution on this list? The Haller mobile desk is blessed with places to keep your tools of the trade and castors that let you clear space quickly if you’re working on something that requires a little more room. Match it with a stylish stool, and you have your next workspace ready to roll.

THE DAYTIME DJ:

Vinyl was once a thing of the future, then a thing of the past and now, once again, a thing of the present. The record collection of every music enthusiast is, without a doubt, their pride and joy, so it won’t come as a shock that how it’s stored and displayed is equally important. From grunge gurus to classical aficionados, we need a spot to admire the album art while we listen to those nostalgic notes.

Enter stage right: the Haller sideboard – the perfect place to store those vinyl discs and the turntable they spin on. Like any great duet, vinyl and the Haller system complement each other perfectly: classic style that blends seamlessly with the modern world.

THE EVENING ENTERTAINER:

Good design is made to be shared with the ones you love. As a third-generation family business, it’s something of a specialist subject of ours. The Haller system isn’t just for intimate, solo activities. This configuration is for those who take pride in their home being the place where it all happens for friends and family.

USM’s Bar Trolley brings gatherings and events to life with effortless, portable ease. It’s a rolling serving station that also acts as a movable piece of mid-century design. Whether it’s a platter of pastries or a glass of something to accompany dinner, use the trolley to ensure whatever you need at the table is always close at hand.

HOMELY HORTICULTURIST:

Nature – the greatest architect of them all (with Frank Lloyd Wright a close second). The plants and floral patterns we see in everyday life have been a wellspring of inspiration for designers the world over, and a mainstay of interiors since the time of the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. In the last decade, there has been an explosion of grow-your-own greenhouses, part of a broader effort to feel closer to gardens in an ever-expanding urban landscape and to bask in the health benefits of a more biophilic home.

USM’s solution for this green-fingered revolution? Just as simple as the Haller system itself: provide a place for plants to cohabit with the furniture they sit on. In simpler terms, create a dedicated gap for plant pots within the design.

THE FAMILY FRIENDLY:

Family-proofing the home – a somewhat unceremonious task. But more importantly (to design geeks like us anyway), an un-stylish one. Does family-friendly furniture have to be so plastic and uninspiring? The same recycled (not in a good way) pastel colours instead of a little personality. Not according to USM. Colour meets practicality in their children’s furniture range.

The best part of choosing Haller for your little ones? The furniture grows as your family does. From a toy box to a desk for revising, the adaptability of the designs makes it the perfect piece to keep adding to as your needs change – all while the effortless style remains the same. chaplins.co.uk

WGSN Colour of the Year 2028:

Radiant Earth

When it comes to colour trends, strength and resilience are in as we look to the future. Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments

“The popularity of earth tones has gained momentum over the past few years, and trend forecasters like WGSN have taken note. These warm, comforting neutrals offer a calming anchor from the chaotic world outside, like a cosy blanket and a cup of tea after a long day.

It’s no surprise that trend forecasters have taken notice, with WGSN x Coloro announcing the Colour of the Year 2028 as Radiant Earth, an earthy, reddish-brown hue. Described as ‘a sophisticated shift towards enduring warmth’, Radiant Earth evokes a soft, matte terracotta feel that soothes yet energises a space.

Radiant Earth’s pigmented texture creates an immersive experience while providing the stability needed for resilience and moving forward. The decision to pick Radiant Earth as the Colour of the Year for 2028 marks a step away from cooler tones that WGSN has previously picked. From Digital Lavender in 2023, Apricot Crush for 2024, Future Dusk for 2025, Transformative Teal for 2026, to Luminous Blue for 2027, Radiant Earth heats up the list with its deep, calming vibe.

In the world of interiors, Radiant Earth can be used as a neutral to ground the room or as an accent colour alongside lighter and cooler neutrals like grey. Its natural qualities bring to mind ceramics and rustic textures, making it a favourite for bohemian decor and rustic interiors, warming up the room with its undertone. Aside from its natural inclinations, Radiant Earth also feels futuristic thanks to its immersive texture, which injects warmth into glossy or chrome textures and metallic finishes.

Thanks to Radiant Earth’s versatility, expect it to be trending across many industries in the coming years. It’s a definite shoo-in for fashion when it comes to knitwear and footwear. Its soft matte texture suits a variety of skin tones and is a good pick for eyeshadow when it comes to the beauty industry. For tech and automobile brands, expect to see more phone covers in this colour or more cars in this stylish matte finish.

Can we predict Radiant Earth’s popularity?

We may be less than two years away from 2028, but expect this warm hue to make its presence known sooner rather than later.”

Question: True or False?

“Engaging

an Interior designer is an unnecessary cost?”

With AI offering instant design inspiration and price comparison sites making costs more visible than ever, it’s easy to question whether there is even a need for interior designers in today’s market. But is that really the case?

We asked Hilary Taylor of Tactile Interiors a Hertfordshire-based design studio working across London and the Home Counties.

“It is always beneficial to seek professional interior advice when embarking on any project, even a small one—particularly with commercially driven developments, where early design decisions can have a lasting impact on the overall scheme.”

Good design starts long before colours and curtains. It starts with understanding what is needed from a space. From furniture scale and circulation to natural light, storage and the allimportant proportion, one well-informed decision early on can prevent expensive mistakes and even

corrective purchases later.

Designers don’t just bring ideas—they bring access.’ Says Hilary Taylor. She explains that professional designers build relationships with suppliers across every part of the home-from high street retailers to artisan upholsterers, fabric houses and specialist trade only manufacturers.

She went on to say that ‘design-led thinking is often most effective at the earliest stages of a project, when spatial planning and key decisions about layout and flow are still being formed. In practice, this can mean upgrading the finish, elevating the detail, and ultimately increasing the perceived value of the overall scheme without spending more than originally intended.’

Scrolling endless online catalogues, searching for Goldilocks pieces across a whole home quickly becomes overwhelming and unrealistic. Designers do that work for you—so you don’t have to.

And importantly, working with a designer

doesn’t remove your access to great retail finds, online discoveries, or even sale pieces you may have spotted. If it works within the overall scheme, it can absolutely be incorporated.

By using a Designer you’re not reducing your options—you’re expanding them.

Forward-thinking design studios are already abreast of AI and its’ benefits, so by working with a professional designer, in terms of interiors you won’t need to be. Enjoy the best of both worlds: technology where it adds value, and human experience where judgement, instinct, and realworld understanding matter most.

Hilary explained that by engaging an interior designer, you don’t have to commit to a full scheme. Consultancy support can be used on a flexible basis, offering a more accessible way to benefit from professional input while maintaining clarity over scope and cost.”

So, in returning to the original question, now do you consider engaging an Interior Designer to be an unnecessary cost, True or False?

Great design doesn’t necessarily mean spending more… but it certainly delivers better outcomes!

Why Summer is the Best Time to Refresh your Bedroom

While spring is often associated with home updates, summer is actually the season when your bedroom is seen in its truest light. Longer days and stronger natural light highlight how a space really feels to live in, from colour palettes to layout and flow. It’s often during these brighter months that homeowners notice, sometimes for the first time, what needs simplifying, softening or completely rethinking.

At The Painted Furniture Company, creating beautiful bedrooms that feel personal, welcoming and built to last is at the heart of everything they do. Known for their handcrafted painted furniture, made-to-order in the UK, the company believes bedrooms should feel like a sanctuary all year round, but especially during the brighter, slower pace of summer.

“Summer naturally makes us want to refresh our

homes and create spaces that feel lighter and more relaxed,” says Kate Chandler, Creative Director at The Painted Furniture Company. “Your bedroom should be somewhere you genuinely look forward to retreating to at the end of the day. Often, it’s the simple changes that make the biggest difference, such as softer colour palettes, decluttering surfaces and choosing furniture that brings both beauty and practicality into the room.”

This season, the team are seeing homeowners gravitate towards calming neutral tones, soft greens and warm earthy shades that bring a sense of tranquillity indoors. Painted furniture in these softer, nature-inspired colours paired with natural wood textures helps create an airy, timeless look that works beautifully in both modern and traditional style bedrooms.

From elegant wardrobes and beautifully crafted bedside tables to practical chest of drawers and

dressing tables, every piece is designed to be both functional and stylish. With bespoke sizing, colour choices and finish options available, customers can create furniture that feels completely individual to their home.

Kate adds: “Bedrooms work best when they feel considered but never overly styled. We always encourage customers to think about how they want the room to feel, not just how they want it to look. Adding furniture that’s handcrafted and made just for you instantly gives a bedroom a more personal and comforting feel.”

The Painted Furniture Company’s made-toorder collections are handcrafted using traditional techniques. Designed with longevity in mind, they offer an alternative to fast furniture and help customers invest in pieces they’ll enjoy for years to come.

KATE’S TIPS TO UPDATE YOUR BEDROOM

For anyone looking to refresh their bedroom this summer, Kate recommends focusing on a few simple updates:

• Introduce lighter, calming colours inspired by nature

• Declutter surfaces to create a more restful atmosphere

• Layer natural textures such as wood, linen and soft cottons

• Choose timeless furniture that balances style with practicality

• Invest in versatile storage to keep the room feeling calm and organised paintedfurnitureco.co.uk

“A beautifully designed bedroom doesn’t need to feel complicated,” says Kate. “It should feel warm, comfortable and completely yours. Summer is the perfect opportunity to create a space that helps you slow down and recharge.”

VINTAGE CHARM

Warm, earthy hues are taking centre stage in a new two-strong tile collection from independent retailer Porcelain Superstore.

Bringing together sun-baked terracotta tones, striking geometrics and a tactile finish, Porcelain Superstore’s new Serena range exudes authenticity and natural appeal.

Available in two finishes – Décor and Mix –Serena is perfect for creating timeless patterned floors and statement walls.

Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “The Serena collections are all about warmth, character and that slightly imperfect, lived-in look people are really craving in their homes.

“The beautiful terracotta tones have a lovely way of softening a room, while the patterned finish brings instant personality without feeling too polished or formal.”

Serena Mix offers a warmer take on trending Victorian chequerboard tiles, with each tile split into four smaller squares. Serena Décor, with its bold geometric pattern, rustic colourway and textured finish, is a true triple threat.

Abbas added: “These are tiles that work particularly well in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and boot rooms because they combine decorative impact with the practicality of porcelain. They give you the charm of an aged artisan floor, but with

Earthy terracotta and aged elegance come together in Porcelain Superstore’s latest tile collection

a surface that is hardwearing, easy to clean and suitable for busy family spaces.”

For those looking to inject warmth into the home, the new Serena range is an ideal solution. Pair with simple cabinetry, natural woods, warm neutrals or aged brass finishes for an elegant finish.

Abbas said: “The key is to let the pattern breathe. Used across a floor or as a statement wall, it can make a space feel layered, soulful and much more considered.”

Tinker & Tallulah collaborates with Nina Watson Interiors to launch The Jewel Collection

Luxury British lampshade brand Tinker & Tallulah has unveiled The Jewel Collection: a new limited-edition range created in collaboration with interior designer Nina Watson (aka @ArtDecoJewel).

Designed to address a gap often overlooked in the market, the collection brings together heritageinspired pattern, distinctive silhouettes and rich, expressive colour.

The collaboration began with a clear vision. When approached by Tinker & Tallulah, Nina knew immediately that she wanted to create the lampshades she could never quite find – timeless pieces designed to complement layered interiors rather than overpower them.

Drawing on heritage damask patterns, the collection introduces a more contemporary palette of colours that are rarely seen in traditional lampshade design, including deep reds, teals, pinks and golden yellows.

The name of the collection emerged organically during the design process. Seeing the finished designs together for the first time, Nina noted their jewel-like quality, leading to the individual shades being named Ruby, Emerald, Topaz, Citrine and Rose Quartz.

Each lampshade is handmade to order in Tinker & Tallulah’s Nottinghamshire studio with a focus on precision, finish and attention to detail, from pattern placement across seams to the brand’s

signature swishy tassels.

Racheal Millband, co-founder of Tinker & Tallulah, said:

“We’ve long admired Nina’s interiors and the way she designs spaces that feel joyful, soulful and that her clients genuinely love living in.

“From our very first conversation, it was clear she had a strong vision for this collection – she knew exactly what she was looking for, and what was missing in the market. It has been such a pleasure to bring that vision to life together.”

Nina Watson added:

“I’ve always felt that lighting is the jewellery of a room – it’s what brings the atmosphere, the glow, the magic.

“With this collection, I wanted to create the lampshades I’m always searching for in my projects. Pieces that feel right in a layered interior, without shouting over everything else.

“Working with Tinker & Tallulah has been an absolute joy. When I saw the first samples, they were even better than I’d imagined! The finish, the detail, the way each piece glows when the light’s on – it’s the kind of craftsmanship that makes something a forever piece.”

The Jewel Collection is handmade to order, reflecting Tinker & Tallulah’s slow, considered approach to design and production.

The lampshades are available in two sizes: 35cm diameter, ideal for table lamps and pendants (£275), and 45cm diameter, suited to floor lamps and larger pendants (£345).

The collection is available to order now at tinkerandtallulah.co.uk.

The

humble shed gets a colourful makeover thanks to

The Posh Shed Company

Colour is one of the key ways homeowners can make a garden shed feel intentional rather than purely functional.

According to the experts at The Posh Shed Company, embracing a colourful shed helps design-conscious households bring personality, cohesion and style into the garden.

Jenny Davis, Head of Marketing at The Posh Shed Company, said: “Homeowners are applying the same thinking to their gardens as they do to their interiors, which means every element is being looked at more carefully.

“A shed is no longer something people simply tuck away and forget about. It is now seen as part of the overall look and feel of the garden, so choosing a shed in the right colour is becoming increasingly important.”

The right shade can help a shed sit more naturally within the space, whether the aim is to complement planting, match other outdoor

features or create a subtle focal point.

Each of The Posh Shed Company’s seven sheds are available in seven signature shades.

Sage Whisper is a beloved Victorian classic. It is a calming, earthy hue that adds charm to gardens. Warm Wheat, which is reminiscent of sun-kissed wheat fields, brings comfort and a natural touch to any space.

Another gentle tone, Soft Linen adds warmth, elegance, and an organic touch to any garden, while Dove Grey reflects light to create a serene, peaceful atmosphere for relaxation

A deep, dark grey, Thunderstorm offers a statement backdrop for luscious greenery, while Mistral Blue brings serenity with its clear sky and tranquil water vibe.

Completing the line-up is Harbour Haze, a vibrant turquoise blue, capturing the feeling of the coast.

The Posh Shed Company apply two layers of Teknos Aquatop – a long lasting paint that wards off UV rays, mould and grime with its slick surface – to achieve the ultimate colourful finish.

Jenny added: “Colour plays a huge role in making a shed feel like a considered addition to the garden rather than a purely practical structure. Some homeowners want a shade that blends beautifully with greenery and natural materials, while others prefer something that adds definition and character. Either way, it shows a shift in how people are thinking about outdoor buildings.” theposhshedcompany.co.uk

SUMMER LIVING BRITONS ARE INVESTING IN OUTDOOR POOL AREAS

As warm weather approaches, UK homeowners are increasingly turning their attention to creating ‘pool ready’ spaces at home – whether that’s a full swimming pool, spa-style hot tub area, or simply a garden designed for cooling off and entertaining.

While private pools are often considered a luxury for the rich and famous, the number of people installing pools is on the increase as UK sunshine levels reach record highs each year. Searches for homes with pools have increased by up to 49% since the pandemic (1) and more than a quarter of UK homeowners say a pool is their ultimate home upgrade (2).

According to Quorn Stone, the UK’s leading natural stone and porcelain tile specialist, demand for poolside-inspired spaces has grown significantly, with homeowners prioritising materials that combine practicality with a high-end, resort-style aesthetic.

Says Isabel Fernandez, Director of Quorn Stone: “Even without installing a full pool, homeowners are embracing the look and lifestyle of poolside living, through considered materials

inside and out. Today’s interpretation of a poolready home goes beyond water – it’s about creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, spa-like finishes and surfaces that evoke holiday living.

“The key to choosing the right paving and tiles to achieve the pool-ready look is continuity, texture and practicality for the British climate. At Quorn Stone, we have a range of paving and tile solutions to help homeowners achieve that summer poolside look that’s becoming more and more popular.”

Quorn Stone’s collections include a range of porcelain and natural stone options suitable for pool surrounds, patios and spa-style interiors designed to bring a cohesive, indoor-outdoor look to homes. mystonefloor.com

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR POOLSIDE PAVING:

• Slip resistance is essential: opt for textured limestone or porcelain

• Light tones reflect heat: ideal for barefoot comfort around pools or hot tubs

• Large-format slabs create a clean, contemporary aesthetic

• Consistency with interiors helps blur boundaries inside and out

• Natural stone adds warmth and texture with natural palettes evoking a Mediterranean look and feel

• Porcelain paving is increasingly popular due to its durability and low maintenance when it comes to cleaning and keeping it algae-free

• Indoor-outdoor flow is the ultimate upgrade: use matching or complementary tiles inside and out to achieve that coveted ‘holiday home’ feeling
