The life of a timepiece F
ew possessions accompany us through life quite like a fine watch. A well-chosen timepiece often remains for decades, marking achievements, celebrating milestones and, in many cases, being passed from one generation to the next. While it may begin as a purchase, its significance often grows far beyond its practical purpose, becoming part of the owner’s personal story. This enduring relationship lies at the heart of watch ownership. Unlike many luxury purchases, a fine mechanical watch is designed with longevity in mind. It is created to be worn, enjoyed and cared for over many years, often becoming more meaningful with every passing chapter of life. At Baker Brothers, this appreciation for the enduring nature of watch ownership shapes the experience we create for our clients. Within our Bedford boutique, customers can explore a carefully curated selection of luxury timepieces with the support of an experienced team who understands that choosing a watch is rarely just a transaction. It is often the beginning of a relationship that may last for decades. For more than 180 years, Baker Brothers has been helping clients choose and care for the pieces that become part of their stories. Our philosophy

is rooted in craftsmanship, care and connection, reflected not only in the timepieces we offer but also in the expertise found within our workshop. Here, our Master Watchmaker and dedicated team continue the tradition of caring for fine

watches with patience, precision and respect for the craftsmanship that makes each piece unique. Their work helps ensure that treasured timepieces continue to perform as beautifully as the day they were first worn. The luxury watch market has never been more dynamic. New releases generate excitement, collectors discuss the latest arrivals and enthusiasts eagerly follow developments across the industry. Yet for many watch owners, the greatest satisfaction comes not from what is next, but from the watches they already own. The most meaningful timepieces are often those connected to life’s defining moments. A watch chosen to mark a professional achievement may later accompany its owner through a wedding, the arrival of a child or years of personal success. An inherited watch carries not only exceptional craftsmanship but family history, memories and emotional significance. The relationship begins with a carefully considered choice. Whether purchasing a first luxury watch or adding to an established collection, enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to pieces that reflect their personality, interests and aspirations. While trends may influence the market, the watches that remain most rewarding to own are often those selected for deeply personal reasons. Choosing a watch, however, is only the beginning of ownership. Mechanical watches are designed to stand the test of time, but preserving their performance requires expert care. Regular servicing protects the integrity of the movement, ensuring the craftsmanship invested in its creation continues to perform as intended. Beyond maintaining accuracy and reliability, servicing helps safeguard the longevity of a timepiece, allowing it to be enjoyed not only today but by future generations. It is an investment in preserving the precision, character and craftsmanship that made the watch worth choosing in the first place. As collections grow, understanding their value becomes equally important. Professional valuations provide reassurance, helping owners maintain appropriate insurance cover and gain a clearer understanding of how their collection has evolved over time. In a constantly changing market, valuations offer an important point of reference and help collectors make informed decisions about
the pieces they own. No collection remains exactly as it began. The watch purchased as a first serious timepiece may eventually sit alongside pieces acquired years later, reflecting changing tastes, interests and experiences. As collections mature, owners naturally refine them around the watches they wear and value most. Some become lifelong companions. Others represent a particular chapter before making way for the next. This process of evolution is one of the most rewarding aspects of collecting. A collection is never truly finished; it develops alongside the person who has assembled it, reflecting a lifetime of achievements, experiences and appreciation for exceptional craftsmanship. The watches that endure are not always the rarest or the most valuable. More often, they are the pieces that remain relevant to their owners, carrying connections to the people, places and moments that have shaped their lives.
SUPPORTING YOUR COLLECTION Whether you are choosing a new timepiece, caring for a watch that has been part of your story for years, or considering how your collection may evolve, our experienced team is here to provide expert guidance at every stage of ownership. Visit our Bedford boutique to explore a carefully curated selection of luxury watches, and discover a destination shaped by craftsmanship, care and connection. which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed! We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.
“Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off”
PLANTING & GROWING Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through. Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in. Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long. Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive. When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t
“Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic”
necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established. There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up. When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.
WHICH VARIETY TO PICK? There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from. We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field. Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for J U LY 2 0 2 6 2 5

A firm supporter of the event over many years, Sandbanks Life has proudly watched SandPolo evolve into one of the defining highlights of the British summer season — a spectacular blend of sport, music, fashion and coastal celebration unlike anywhere else in the country. Since launching in 2008, SandPolo has become the world’s leading beach polo event, attracting thousands of guests each summer to experience professional polo played directly on the sand alongside luxury hospitality, live entertainment and unforgettable beachside parties. What began as a bold vision from founder Johnny Wheeler has grown into a landmark occasion that captures the unique spirit, glamour and energy of the South Coast. Returning on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July, this year’s event promises another unforgettable weekend as Sandbanks transforms into a vibrant beachfront arena filled with world-class polo, fine dining, live music and stylish summer socialising. Friday evening sees the return of the hugely popular ‘Boogie Nights’, bringing a dazzling soundtrack of soul, funk, disco and Motown to the beach. Headlining the celebrations are legendary acid-jazz pioneers The Brand New Heavies, alongside actor, DJ and broadcaster Craig Charles. Saturday’s glamorous ‘Ladies Day’ continues the celebrations in signature SandPolo style, combining fashion, entertainment and highenergy polo with a playful nineties and noughties-inspired twist. Guests will once again compete for the coveted ‘Best Dressed’ titles while enjoying music from feel-good collective Discolicious. Pop favourite Peter Andre brings a welcome wave of nostalgia, while chart-topping band The Vamps promise an energetic live performance packed with festival anthems. In an ever-changing events landscape, SandPolo’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to bring people together to celebrate summer by the sea in one of the UK’s most exclusive coastal settings. Nearly two decades on, it remains a true showcase of the Sandbanks lifestyle; sophisticated, vibrant and unmistakably British. For ticket information and hospitality packages visit: sandpolo.com

A new chapter for Old Hatfield:
Farmers Market newly launched in Salisbury Square A vibrant new farmers market is set to bring life, flavour and community spirit to the heart of Old Hatfield this summer, as Salisbury Square welcomes its first Old Hatfield Farmers Market.
L
aunched Sunday 21st June, the market takes place in the beautifully regenerated Salisbury Square – now re established as a central gathering place for the community and a key part of Old Hatfield’s evolving story. Held on the third Sunday of each month, the market features around 25 independent traders, offering a rich mix of seasonal produce, artisan food and handcrafted goods. Visitors can expect everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to cheeses, baked goods, honey, chutneys, and crafts. The market is being delivered in partnership with The Hertfordshire Barrow Boy, a fourthgeneration family-run business with roots in London’s historic markets of Holborn and Russell Square. With more than 75 years of trading heritage, the Barrow Boy has become a familiar name across Hertfordshire’s local food scene. Ahead of the launch, founder Ben shared his enthusiasm: “I’m looking forward to launching the Old Hatfield Farmers Market in Salisbury Square and I’m particularly excited to see the community of Old Hatfield come together to experience our quality fresh produce and craft traders.” The arrival of the farmers market marks an

important milestone for the wider regeneration of Salisbury Square, a flagship project by Gascoyne Estates that blends historic character with a renewed focus on community life. Designed as a flexible, people-first space, the square is set to host regular events and activities that bring people together and support local enterprise. For the Estate, this moment represents more than just a new event – it is the realisation of a long-term vision. James Rayner, Estate Director for Hatfield Park said: “Seeing Salisbury Square come to life in this way is incredibly special. The farmers market is exactly the kind of activity we envisaged – something that celebrates local producers, creates reasons for people to come together, and helps build a strong, connected community in Old Hatfield. It reflects our ambition to create places that are not only beautiful, but genuinely lived in and enjoyed.” The market sits alongside a growing programme of cultural and seasonal activity across Old Hatfield, helping to position Salisbury Square as a welcoming destination where heritage and modern life meet. With its mix of independent traders, community atmosphere and carefully curated setting, the Old Hatfield Farmers Market promises to become a regular highlight of the local calendar – and a new focal point for residents and visitors alike. hatfield-house.co.uk

experience for which the event is so renowned. Also for 2026, the event is delighted to offer brand-new reserved course-side parking at the Anniversary Splash - one of the most iconic parts of Burghley’s legendary cross-country course. This exceptionally beautiful spot in Burghley’s Capability Brown-designed parkland has spectacular views of Burghley House and some of the most exciting fences on the cross-country course, so parking spaces will be strictly limited. Reserved picnic parking at the nearby Lion Bridge is already very popular and always sells out. These new course side spaces have been created after the introduction of similar ones on two other spots on the course last year proved incredibly sought-after. Don’t delay if you would like to secure a prime course-side picnic spot with a sideserving of premium cross-country action. Following an instant success in 2025, the Lakeside Chalets, is back for 2026. If you would like a private, premium place to entertain friends, family or guests during Agria Burghley, these elegant tents, complete with garden furniture and outdoor as well as indoor space, are perfect. They offer stunning views of Burghley’s parkland and lake and very close to the Main Arena. The Chalets have already sold out for Saturday, but there are a small number still available for Thursday, 3 September, Friday, 4 September and Sunday, 6 September. It’s always fascinating to get a little “behind the scenes” access to a major event such as Burghley Horse Trials and booking one of their official cross-country course-walks, is a great way to gain insight into the intricacies of designer Derek di Grazia’s legendary track. And if you’d like to combine exclusive crosscountry insight with a glamorous start to your Burghley experience, we recommend Wednesday afternoon’s “Tea & the Trot-Up” on 2 September. This comprises a special Champagne afternoon tea, with a talk and Q&A with Burghley’s former long-serving course-designer and winning rider, Captain Mark Phillips - followed by a view of the first horse inspection from the Main Arena (not accessible by the public) and a tour of key crosscountry fences with Mark Phillips. new pub map has been launched to showcase the extraordinary array of pubs that St Albans has to offer, thanks to St Albans City Centre BID in collaboration with Save St Albans Pubs, Hannah Sessions design, and Launch Studio. To celebrate St Albans’ long history as a place with a rich pub culture, a new pub map has been published to exhibit the city’s pubs for all to easily locate and enjoy. With many dating back centuries, today St Albans has one of the highest densities of pubs per square mile in the country. Together our city’s pubs are staples in the heart of the community, each one offering something unique – producing a remarkable blend of vibrancy, history and character. The map has been published to create further awareness for our pubs, for locals and visitors alike. With many of the pubs and other St Albans sites hand drawn, the aim is to bring to life these magical buildings on paper, as people traverse our great city seeking out that taste of St Albans, the home of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). We of course do recommend a responsible approach to enjoying alcohol. The map shows 36 pubs, with beautiful illustrations and symbols indicating establishments that are dog-friendly and have a pub garden.

Vivien Cannon, St Albans BID Manager said, “Every pub in the city holds a special place in the community. Our hospitality scene remains a vibrant element of our city’s offer, and we’re delighted to be working with Save St Albans Pubs who’s shared voice champions the importance of the hospitality sector. Hannah’s sketches are instrumental in giving the map a real-life feel and Launch Studio has expertly managed the design and integration aspects of the map. Whilst our message is always to drink sensibly, together, we’ve created a map that celebrates the incredible diversity of pubs right here in the city.” Alicia Nelson, from Save St Albans Pubs said, “Pubs have been a part of St Albans for well over 1000 years and their hospitality is entwined in the community and history of St Albans. We campaign hard for fair taxation on pubs and will protect local pubs at risk of closure. When a pub is gone, it is gone. Understanding the importance of pubs to our city and community makes it our duty to protect them for decades to come.” Maps are available at the museum, cathedral, other visitor outlets and the pubs themselves. The Art of Possibility:
Henry Fraser’s Extraordinary Vision
I
n an age captivated by narratives of resilience, few stories resonate with the quiet power and authenticity of Henry Fraser’s. Yet to define Fraser solely through adversity would be to overlook the remarkable achievement at the heart of his work: art that transcends circumstance and speaks directly to the human spirit. Paralysed from the shoulders down following a life-changing diving accident in 2009, Fraser has transformed what many would regard as limitation into an extraordinary creative language. Teaching himself to draw and paint using a brush held in his mouth, he has built a body of work distinguished not by its method, but by its emotional depth, vibrant energy and technical confidence. His paintings are immediately recognisable. Bold wildlife portraits, luminous landscapes and expressive abstracts pulse with colour and movement, revealing an artist fascinated by beauty, optimism and the natural world. There is a striking absence of self-pity in Fraser’s visual vocabulary. Instead, his canvases celebrate possibility. Animals emerge with personality and presence; colours radiate with an almost joyful intensity. Each piece feels less like a statement about disability and more like an affirmation of life itself. What makes Fraser particularly compelling within today’s cultural landscape is his refusal to be confined by labels. Artist, author, speaker and

His bestselling books explore themes of acceptance, perspective and personal growth, while his public speaking engagements have inspired audiences worldwide. Yet art remains the purest expression of his philosophy: that creativity can flourish even in the most unexpected circumstances. There is also a refreshing honesty to Fraser’s work. The slight imperfections that naturally accompany mouth painting are not concealed but embraced, lending each piece a sense of humanity and authenticity. In a world increasingly polished by algorithms and digital perfection, that sincerity feels profoundly contemporary. Henry Fraser’s greatest achievement is not that he paints with his mouth. It is that he has created a distinctive artistic voice that compels us to look beyond limitation and toward possibility. His work reminds us that creativity is not determined by physical capability, but by imagination, courage and an unwavering commitment to seeing beauty where others might not. henryfraserart.com

SUMMER AT COSY CLUB
Come find a table. Stay. There’s a particular quality to a Cosy Club afternoon in summer. The light hits just right. Olives arrive, as they should. A bottle gets ordered before anyone’s officially decided. Lunch stretches, conversations loosen, and suddenly no one’s checking the time. Come for lunch. See where it goes.
A fresh summer menu The new summer menu is made for unhurried moments. Think golden, crispy buttermilk chicken topped with a free‑range egg and finished with a flourish of truffle. Or herb‑crusted salmon with a soft velouté and bright green vegetables – light, comforting and perfectly seasonal. It’s the sort of food that makes ordering another round feel like a very sensible decision. Salad season, upgraded Summer salads have arrived – and they don’t disappoint. The classic Caesar delivers every time: crisp leaves, smoky bacon, roasted chicken, a perfectly cooked egg and plenty of proper dressing. Add fries and it becomes that kind of 5 6 J U LY 2 0 2 6
lunch. Balanced. Joyful. No notes. For something fresher and greener, bulgur wheat meets pickled green apple, tenderstem broccoli, peas and smashed cucumber. Fresh herbs, toasted sunflower seeds and honey yoghurt with preserved lemon vinaigrette bring crunch, brightness and serious flavour. Light yet satisfying, they’re made for warm afternoons that leave room for what might follow. Dessert? Obviously. Maybe something cool and coconutty with mango and lime. Maybe tiramisu, rich and coffee‑soaked. Or a creamy mascarpone cheesecake with strawberries, mint and white chocolate. Share if you like. Or don’t. No judgement. Martinis, naturally As afternoon drifts into evening, the Cosy Club Martini Menu steps in. Clean, cold and perfectly made. Classic, dirty or with a crisp pickled twist. Gin or vodka. Entirely your call. Pull up a chair. Order something delicious. Stay as long as you like. Endless Summer starts at Cosy Club. cosyclub.co.uk

and reintroduce this much-loved piece. Created with longevity in mind, this is a piece designed to become a modern heirloom, bringing a sense of occasion to outdoor entertaining year after year. Compact and portable, it allows hosts to take elegance wherever they go, from the garden to the countryside. Crafted from rich, soft blue leather and lined in OKA’s iconic Ocellus print, it opens to reveal a beautifully arranged interior that is as practical as it is aesthetic. Inside, you’ll find everything needed to serve drinks with ease: a flask, hip flask and shot cups, alongside tumblers, wine coolers, ice tongs, a corkscrew and bottle opener. A dedicated section safely houses champagne flutes in transit, and we’ve even thought about a discreet pull-out tray that allows the fold-down front to sit level, creating a practical mini tabletop, ensuring that wherever it’s placed, whether in the boot of a car or nestled into the grass, your Bloody Mary or glass of champagne stays perfectly upright. “Entertaining has always been at the heart of OKA, and we wanted to create something that captures that essence beyond the home. Our Ocellus print has truly proved itself as a pattern, and it’s so exciting to see it make its debut in our outdoor entertaining collection, not to mention the adventures it might have, travelling from picnic to picnic in the back of car boots. It’s a perfect combination of design, craftsmanship and practicality.” – Sue Jones, Co-Founder and Creative Director oka.com

he first exhibition ever staged in the UK devoted to Schiaparelli. Spanning the 1920s to the present day, the exhibition charts the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most innovative fashion designers, Elsa Schiaparelli. The show traces the origins of the house, from its first, paradigm shifting garments, through to its present-day incarnation in the hands of its creative director, Daniel Roseberry. Featuring new research undertaken by art and fashion curators focused on the creative collaborations and output of founder Elsa Schiaparelli, the exhibition places her at the nexus of innovation, a key figure within a stellar sphere of fashion, art and performance which spanned the cities of Paris, London, and New York in the years between the two world wars and up to her retirement in 1954. It highlights the history of a female entrepreneur and showcases her celebrated, yet little-seen garments from the history of fashion. The exhibition is the first of its kind to spotlight

the London branch of Schiaparelli, its dynamic and independent clients and the founder’s own involvement in the satellite location. The exhibition comprises over 200 objects, including garments, accessories, jewellery, paintings, photographs, sculpture, furniture, perfumes and archive material. The diversity of media, styles and subjects celebrates the house of Schiaparelli’s boundless creativity. The V&A holds some of Elsa Schiaparelli’s most radical designs. The exhibition features the V&A’s ‘Skeleton’ dress and the ‘Tears’ dress, along with a hat shaped to look like an upside-down shoe, all conceived in collaboration with Salvador Dalí. Artworks by Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Man Ray are also on display. The exhibition references the popularity of Schiaparelli’s designs for film and theatre productions. Schiaparelli possessed a vibrant artistic sensibility. Turning ordinary items into innovative clothing, accessories and jewellery, she created the most memorable fashions of the day. Her couture house, the most discussed of interwar Paris, redefined standards of style and definitions of beauty. Today, from the iconic Schiaparelli atelier at 21 Place Vendôme, creative director Daniel Roseberry accompanies the storied Maison into its next chapter, establishing an oeuvre that continues to shape and inspire global culture today.

BENEFITS OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL
W
ith options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.
ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular 6 8 J U LY 2 0 2 6
learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.
CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualized attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.
“91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”
DEDICATED TEACHERS Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT Private schools typically maintain clear expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.
“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”
skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.
PREPARATION FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD Private schools often go beyond standard curriculum requirements by offering specialized programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.
AMPLE RESOURCES Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. PREPPED FOR LIFE
M
erchant Taylors’ Prep School, set in 15 acres of leafy grounds in Northwood, delivers the best of both worlds: a strong academic tradition with an extensive range of co-curricular and sporting activities. Located just minutes from Merchant Taylors’ senior school, it provides an excellent all-through option for high-achieving pupils. The new Head, Miles Chester, who joined in September, brings extensive experience and a fresh, dynamic approach to the school. He is proud of the prep school’s quality of teaching and the holistic education it offers. “Through an enriched curriculum, we foster every opportunity for pupils to develop their individual potential, nurturing their unique passions, interests and aspirations. The foundation we provide ensures they are equipped with the skills and confidence to transition seamlessly to senior school,” said Mr. Chester. The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos. From the very beginning, teachers take the time to get to know each pupil and their abilities, within a small-class setting. This allows enquiring minds to develop in an
7 0 J U LY 2 0 2 6
environment where each pupil is given a sense of belonging that helps them to achieve. Through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs and activities, boys are encouraged to try new things and explore their talents and creativity. The school uses sport to reinforce its ethos and to instil discipline, teamwork, fair play, responsibility and respect. Having the senior school nearby offers numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in sports, music and academics. With pupils now transitioning to senior school at the end of Year 6, the school is expanding its intake for Year 3 from September 2026. “This is a great opportunity for able pupils with potential to join our school and benefit from a well-balanced education and smooth transition to the senior school”, Mr Chester added. SHAPING FUTURES:
ST COLUMBA’S LEADS THE WAY Helping students shape their futures rather than fit a mould
S
t Columba’s launches new academic and vocational pathways and invests in its campus to prepare students for the future. St Columba’s College has completed a significant programme of investment in both its curriculum and campus, ensuring young people aged 4–18 have even greater opportunities, support and learning environments to help them thrive in a rapidly changing world. The College’s Sixth Form has grown by 50% in recent years, reflecting strong demand for its nurturing and academically ambitious post-16 provision. In response, St Columba’s is expanding its curriculum to offer students more pathways aligned to their strengths, interests and future aspirations. Alongside its commitment to academic excellence - which saw 72% of A-level grades awarded at A*–B and 78% of students secure places at Russell Group or top 10 universities last year - the College has seen a threefold increase in students progressing to degree apprenticeships. Building on the successful introduction of vocational qualifications in Business and Sport, St Columba’s will launch Applied Psychology in September 2026. Further vocational pathways will follow in 2027, including a new two-year programme combining study with industry placements. Equivalent to three A-levels, it will
7 2 J U LY 2 0 2 6
provide routes into employment, apprenticeships and university. Karl Guest, Headmaster, said: “St Columba’s has a long‑standing tradition of academic excellence and providing a holistic learning environment will always be central to our mission,” said Karl Guest, Headmaster. “The introduction of more pathways is a natural and well‑considered evolution of our curriculum when the world of work is changing so rapidly. It ensures every student can access a futureproof and ambitious education that reflects their strengths and aspirations. These developments enhance our offer and position our students for success in a rapidly changing world. This investment demonstrates our College is thriving and we are committed to providing a broad, balances and forward thinking education.” To support these developments, the College is repurposing the historic Iona House into a student-centred learning hub. The project will create eight modern classrooms for Prep, Senior and Sixth Form students, providing inspiring spaces that support the continued growth of the College’s programmes. Together, these investments reflect St Columba’s commitment to helping every young person discover their strengths, grow in confidence and leave school equipped to thrive. By broadening opportunities and enhancing facilities, the College continues to combine tradition with innovation, preparing students for success in an ever-changing world.

Winning Isn’t the Only Lesson That Matters By Mr Fleet: Head of Maths, Sarum Hall School For many people, success in competition is measured by where you finish. If that were true, then our Year 6 team’s experience at the QuizClub National Maths Championship Grand Final might be seen as disappointing. I couldn’t disagree more.
7 4 J U LY 2 0 2 6
R
eaching the Grand Final at the University of Oxford was, in itself, a remarkable achievement. More than 300 teams entered the competition, yet Sarum Hall School earned its place among the nation’s very best young mathematicians. That didn’t happen by chance. It came through commitment, resilience and a willingness to embrace challenge. What impressed me most was not simply the mathematical ability of our Year 6 team, but their determination to improve. Week after week, they attended practice sessions, tackled demanding homework and pushed themselves well beyond the Year 6 curriculum. Along the way, they explored topics such as surface area, polyhedrons, platonic solids and percentage change, while sharpening the teamwork and problem-solving skills that are just as valuable as mathematical knowledge. Competitions like this also show children that maths is exciting. Solving rapid-fire problems against the clock, working collaboratively and competing alongside the country’s strongest schools transforms maths from a classroom
subject into an exhilarating challenge. Whether answering questions in 30 seconds or discussing tactics on the train to Oxford, the team discovered that maths can be both demanding and enormous fun. None of this would have been possible without the support surrounding them. Their parents gave up time to encourage them, accompany them and cheer them on throughout the journey. At school, staff and classmates followed their progress with genuine excitement and pride. That sense of community reminds our pupils that their achievements matter to all of us. Although we did not return home with the championship trophy, we came back with something far more valuable: confidence, experience and the motivation to aim even higher. As one of the girls remarked afterwards, she would love the chance to compete again and improve. To me, that is the greatest success of all. Winning is wonderful, but inspiring children to love learning, embrace challenge and believe in themselves is an achievement that lasts far longer than any medal. sarumhallschool.co.uk

FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:
A
WHO GETS AHEAD?
cross many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions. This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top. In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity. Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can 7 6 J U LY 2 0 2 6
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors. At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system. As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background – and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

INSPIRED BY BRITISH SUMMER
G
lasgow-based eyewear brand IOLLA has launched a seven new sunglasses styles priced at £85 as part of their latest Spring/Summer collection. The Make The Most campaign is inspired by a familiar British behaviour - when good weather appears, plans change. Commutes get longer, meetings end earlier, and time moves outdoors... often at short notice. Designed for exactly these moments, IOLLA is positioning sunglasses as an everyday essential rather than something reserved for holidays. To mark the launch, IOLLA introduced a weekend long Frame Amnesty across all UK showrooms. Customers could bring in any old sunglasses, regardless of brand or condition, and receive £10 off a new pair. All donated frames will be recycled, supporting a more sustainable approach to eyewear consumption. The new collection features seven unisex acetate frames, available in a range of colourways and lens options including polarised and gradient finishes. Designed in Scotland, the range continues IOLLA’s focus on accessible, design-led eyewear. Shot across Glasgow, the campaign captures small, recognisable moments - leaving work early, heading to the park, taking the long way home. Reflecting the unpredictability of British weather, the shoot continued despite overcast conditions reinforcing the idea that the best moments aren’t always planned. “British summer doesn’t wait,” says Kathryn McKerrall, Creative Lead at IOLLA. “When the sun shows up, even briefly, people respond instinctively. With the UK Men’s grooming market growing by 3.5-4.2%, the shift is clear, more men are embracing skincare as a daily ritual worth investing in. ARRAN has brought together its top hints and tips for making the most of the morning routine, along with simple ways to seamlessly weave these products into daily life. Head of Product Development Robin Fisher, who helps formulate ARRAN’s best-selling Men’s collection, shares his expert advice on how to elevate the grooming routine with self-care at its core. At ARRAN, the belief is simple: men don’t need an occasion to invest in themselves. Grooming and self-care should be part of everyday living. The best-selling Sannox collection is designed exactly for that, bringing together products that turn routine into ritual. Start with good preparation Begin the routine with a warm shower or hot face cloth to help soften skin and beard hair, open pores and prepare the skin for a smoother, more comfortable shave. Prioritise hand and body care Self-care goes beyond the face. A hydrating body wash is an easy upgrade that brings a touch of everyday indulgence. A standout choice is the Lochranza Bath & Shower Gel, featured in a joint set with Sannox, perfect for switching up the morning routine. 8 6 J U LY 2 0 2 6
Upgrade his shaving experience A good grooming routine doesn’t have to be complicated, opting for high-quality shaving products can help improve your routine. ARRAN’s Beard and Shave Oil is perfect for all uses - as a shave oil, pre-shave or beard conditioner featuring rich sensual leather scents combined with amber and oud to create a luxury fragrance. The Scottish botanical inclusions like soothing milk thistle, olive-derived squalane, and nourishing jojoba oil, help improve razor glide, reduce irritation, and soften beard hair for a smoother, more comfortable shave. Post-shave care is just as important To help calm the skin after shaving and minimise irritation, follow with an after-shave product or moisturiser designed to protect and lock in hydration. Sannox After Shave Balm is the ideal finishing touch. Suitable for all skin types, the balm is enriched with Scottish oat extract, allantoin and aloe vera to deeply nourish, soothe, and absorb quickly into the skin, working to reduce post-shave irritation for skin that feels calm, refreshed, and cared for. Incorporate fragrance thoughtfully A signature scent is the finishing detail that pulls

everything together and makes for a thoughtful gift too. Farm Club Arrives at Tewinbury Set across 700 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, Tewinbury Farm Hotel has launched Farm Club, a new space bringing together fitness, reformer Pilates, recovery and flexible working on the farm.
F
arm Club is made up of four parts: Farm Fitness, Studio 281, the Recovery Yard and the Farm Club Hub. Each can be accessed in its own way through memberships, classes and pay as you go sessions, giving members, hotel guests and local visitors the freedom to use the spaces in a way that works for them. At the core of Farm Club is Farm Fitness, the outdoor training concept founded by Tom Kemp on a working farm in Essex. Tewinbury is its first location outside the original site, bringing its well known approach to functional training to Hertfordshire. Sessions move away from the traditional gym and into the farmyard, with a mix of conditioning, strength and purposeful movement. The timetable includes Farm Fit, Yard Work, Function and Engine, with classes designed to improve strength, fitness and endurance. Studio 281 brings reformer Pilates to the farm. Founded in 2017 by Georgia Testa and her mother, the studio has built a strong following across Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The new Tewinbury studio has nine reformer beds and small classes focused on strength, flexibility and core stability in a calm and considered space. The Recovery Yard offers a slower pace, with ice baths and a large wood fired sauna overlooking the River Mimram. It can be used after a class or booked as a standalone session, whether for recovery, contrast therapy or simply some time away from everything else. The Farm Club Hub completes the space. Based in the Stable, it gives members somewhere to work, meet and spend the day, with complimentary coffee and pastries each morning and everything

else at Tewinbury close by. Farm Club members also receive benefits across the wider group, including preferential bedroom rates and discounts on food and drink at Tewinbury, Hertford House and The Cow & Stout. It means a morning class can turn into a day working from the farm, time in the sauna, dinner in Hertford or a night away in the countryside. SKIN VEILING
2026’s sheer-layering movement is redefining complexion perfection, replacing heavy coverage with translucent, second-skin luminosity.
A
fter several years dominated by either full-glam sculpting or glass-skin shine, beauty is moving into a more refined middle ground. The latest complexion trend, known as Skin Veiling, focuses on creating a barely-there finish through strategic, sheer layers that enhance rather than conceal. The result is skin that looks naturally perfected – breathable, dimensional and quietly luxurious. At the centre of Skin Veiling is the idea that coverage should be built like fabric: lightweight, flexible and almost imperceptible. Rather than masking the face in one uniform layer, products are applied selectively in thin washes, allowing natural skin texture, freckles and tonal variation to remain visible. The effect feels polished but deeply authentic, reflecting a wider appetite for realism in beauty. The trend has emerged alongside fashion’s growing obsession with transparency, fluid fabrics 9 2 J U LY 2 0 2 6
and understated elegance. Just as organza, mesh and silk layering have returned to the runway, makeup is mirroring that same philosophy. Skin appears softly filtered, not perfected beyond recognition. It is less about transformation and more about refinement. Complexion products are evolving to support this shift. Skin tints, serum foundations and lightweight concealers are becoming the backbone of everyday makeup routines, replacing heavier matte formulas. Instead of creating a blank canvas, they work to unify tone while preserving movement and light. Strategic concealing around the nose, chin or under-eyes becomes more important than all-over coverage. Glow within Skin Veiling is subtle and controlled. Unlike the wet-look finishes that dominated previous years, luminosity is concentrated in targeted points – the tops of cheeks, temples and the bridge of the nose –
NARS LIGHT REFLECTING FOUNDATION £42, AVAILABLE AT NARS AND BOOTS
creating dimension without overt shine. Powder still plays a role, but only where needed, helping maintain balance rather than flattening the complexion. The rest of the face follows suit. Blush is soft and sheer, often in skin-like peach, rose or muted terracotta tones, while bronzer is diffused seamlessly into the perimeter of the face. Eyes are kept minimal, often with cream shadows or softly defined lashes, allowing the skin itself to remain the focal point. Lips are lightly stained or glossed, enhancing their natural tone. Part of Skin Veiling’s appeal lies in its practicality. Lightweight layers tend to wear more gracefully throughout the day, making touchups simpler and reducing the risk of caking or separation. It is particularly suited to warmer months, travel and long event days, where comfort matters as much as appearance. Ultimately, Skin Veiling reflects a broader beauty mood: intentional restraint. In place of obvious artistry comes something quieter, fresher and more sophisticated. It celebrates skin as it is, softened only where necessary, and suggests that modern beauty is no longer about covering everything – but revealing just enough.

Styling an Icon:
5 ways to style the CH24 Wishbone Chair “Scandinavian design’s golden age truly took flight around the time of the postwar furniture boom, meaning the two styles borrowed characteristics from each other relentlessly”
9 8 J U LY 2 0 2 6
A
h, Scandinavia, the mere mention of the word conjures imagery of Mads Mikkelsen pedalling down a Copenhagen cycle path on his way to acquire Kardemummabullar at some local bakery. But when we’re not thinking of the pastries or the pastel coloured buildings, we’re thinking, of course, about the furniture. None can claim to be a Scandi design symbol more than the perfection in paper cord that is Hans Wegner’s CH24 Wishbone chair. While it is an icon of Northern Europe by one of the old masters of chair making, times and trends change, so how can you adapt one of Denmark’s finest to your own tastes? Time to find out in our style guide below. Mid-century masterpiece: To call the CH24 a
Mid-Century chair would be about as accurate as you can get. Released at the very midpoint of the 20th century in 1950, its symbiosis with this era of furniture is almost guaranteed. Scandinavian design’s golden age truly took flight around the time of the post-war furniture boom, meaning the two styles borrowed characteristics from each other relentlessly. Hence why both often deploy copious amounts of wood, clean lines and versatility, all qualities that define the star of this article. To make them both work in your home is to harmonise their defining qualities. Take a hero piece like a large oval dining table and balance its understated splendour with Oak Oiled CH24s, add that signature 1950s flash of brilliance with a statement primary coloured rug, then add in something with a paper shade for the pendant light.
Icons of industry: From a match made in 1950s heaven to perhaps the most unlikely couple in design - they do say opposites attract. In this case, that is incredibly fortunate, because the contrast between the dulcet tones of the industrial world and the soft shades of the Scandi one is so stark that they actually work together rather beautifully. Albeit with a very specific edition of the CH24. We are, of course, talking about the sultry, obsidian hues of the all-black version. The recipe for this stylistic choice is simple: muted tones, rich textures and bold, straight-edged shapes. Take a dark obsidian dining table to match the accompanying chairs, brighten the space both above and below, firstly with a silvery but sleek rug and then with a moody, maximalist spotlight. Supplemented Scandi: We’ve arrived; it had to happen eventually. The obvious choice for one of the most recognisable symbols of Danish design, surrounded by other icons from its homeland. Make hygge (Google is your friend for the uninitiated) your priority and set yourself up for a serene Scandi dining experience like no other. Bright wood, and lots of it, should take centre stage. In fact, every surface that is not part of the floor or attached to the ceiling should embrace it. Save warm yet simplistic hues and soft textures for those remaining elements. Place Oak Soaped CH24s around an equally tranquil table in a similar finish, add an earthtoned rug, and complete the setting with a pastel pendant, perhaps from Louis Pouslen, a true lesson in Scandinavian illumination. Abstract and Artful: One style that Danish design is rarely associated with is abstract furniture. Peaceful and serene, yes, but typically uniform. Make no mistake, this works massively in its favour
within its natural habitat; you can mix and match multiple brands to your heart’s content with little concern for clashes. But what about the overtly vibrant among us? Those creating spaces that blur the lines between home and art gallery? Would I be talking about it if there wasn’t an option? Put on your rainbow-tinted glasses and feast your eyes on Carl Hansen’s collection of colourful classics: from Orange to Olive, Hans Wegner’s masterpiece is perfectly placed to go hueto-hue with your boldest statement pieces. Roll out the leopard print carpet, place your colourful chairs around a multi-hued table base, and complete the scene with the exuberant glow of a statement pendant that conveys your own unique style. Cosy Club: Let’s wrap up this list with the perfect setting for those of us who need a cosy place to close out the day. When it comes to the CH24, it is not just the materials that create a comforting atmosphere, but the shapes and colours too. Rounded curves, smooth, supple lines, all carefully carved in this case from that great conveyor of calm: walnut. A timber that naturally exudes warmth and welcome, while offering an effortlessly easy-on-the-eye aesthetic. So, we know walnut is the way forward, but we are aiming for the pinnacle of home comfort. Start your setting with the softness of a thick, fluffy rug, then lean into the craftsmanship of wood specialists, use a dark timber like Walnut to consolidate the cosiness. Finally, complete the atmosphere with a soft, glowing set of lamps surrounding the area. chaplins.co.uk

THE NEW DEEP END OF LUXURY
B
ritish summers are changing, and with them, the way we live. The climate is getting warmer and our relationship with our gardens has undergone a dramatic transformation. Outdoor space has become the new heart of the home - a vibrant social focus, as well as a peaceful sanctuary where we gather with family and entertain friends. As we spend more time socialising alfresco, our definition of a modern luxury home is naturally shifting. Today, it has evolved into something far more personal and central to our daily lives. Forget the home cinema or the state-of-the-art gym; a swimming pool is the ultimate luxury home improvement for Brits, topping the wish list for homeowners across the nation according to Compass Pools by Waterstream 2026 trend

report. More than a quarter of the UK would love a swimming pool, fuelled by a collective desire for slower living, the pool has been reimagined as the ultimate sanctuary for entertaining and wellness. Oliver Bishop, Director of Elliot Oliver Lettings commented: “In today’s ultra-competitive prime property market, a beautifully designed luxury swimming pool is no longer just an indulgence, it’s a strategic asset. Whether it’s a sleek contemporary pool with smart control lighting for an urban townhouse or a natural-style installation in a countryside estate, the right pool elevates both lifestyle and value.” According to design experts at Compass Pools by Waterstream, we are seeing a major rise in “daily dip” culture. Homeowners are embracing short, daily swims as a necessary ritual and reset for mental clarity and physical recovery. As a result, the traditional pool is transforming into a holistic spa hub. Today’s most inspired builds are paired seamlessly with infrared saunas and crisp cold plunge zones, allowing owners to move effortlessly through a private wellness circuit. Visually, the focus is on creating a striking architectural anchor for the property. The most coveted designs beautifully blur the line between indoor comfort and outdoor elegance. These designs will often blend well into landscaping, creating a harmonious connection between the home and the outdoors. Lighting, water features, and naturalistic styling help transform pools into design centrepieces. compass-pools.co.uk

Back to School Decor:
Essential bedroom tweaks to help kids focus and relax this term
A
s the countdown to the new school year begins, parents are shifting their focus from summer holidays to school uniform prep and academic routines. However, design experts at Nordic wallcovering studio FEATHR point out that one of the most powerful tools for easing this transition is a child’s own bedroom. “The start of the school year is a massive psychological shift for kids,” says Anne Puukko, co-founder of FEATHR. “Suddenly, their bedroom is asked to pull double-duty— functioning as a quiet study hub by day and a calming sanctuary by night. Simple, intentional redecoration with designer wallpaper can help children mentally switch between ‘homework mode’ and ‘rest mode’ without feeling overwhelmed.” To help parents prepare their homes for the autumn term, FEATHR shares four practical decoration tips to optimize children’s rooms for focus, learning, and emotional wellbeing. Style a Dedicated “Study Zone” (Even in Small Rooms) Mixing sleep spaces with workspaces can lead to 1 0 6 J U LY 2 0 2 6
subconscious restlessness. For a successful backto-school setup, use clever decor styling to visually isolate the homework desk. The Decor Tip: Position the desk facing away from the bed. Use a distinct wall mural or a block of structured, geometric wallpaper behind the desk area. This creates a clear visual boundary that signals to a child’s brain that it is time to sit down and focus, leaving the rest of the bedroom’s distractions behind them. Ditch “High-Octane” Colours for Calming Palettes While bright, primary-coloured bedrooms are popular for toddlers, high-saturation reds and bright yellows can cause sensory overload and anxiety in school-aged children trying to concentrate or unwind.
“While bright, primary-coloured bedrooms are popular for toddlers, high-saturation reds and bright yellows can cause sensory overload and anxiety in school-aged children trying to concentrate or unwind”
The Decor Tip: Update the room’s color palette with muted, earthy tones inspired by Scandinavian design. Swap out loud accents for soft sage greens, warm terracottas, soothing stone greys, and deep ocean blues. These shades are proven to lower heart rates, reduce eye strain, and create an atmosphere of quiet concentration perfect for reading. Bring the Outdoors In with Biophilic Design Integrating elements of nature into a study space—known as biophilic design—is proven to lower cortisol (stress) levels and improve cognitive stamina during mentally tiring school weeks. The Decor Tip: Maximise natural light by positioning the study desk near a window and dressing the surrounding feature wall with a largescale forest mural. This setup does more than look beautiful. Looking at a sweeping tree acts as a visual reset button for a child’s brain. During intense study sessions or screen-heavy homework, these natural vistas give a child’s eyes a healthy place to rest.
“Maximise natural light by positioning the study desk near a window and dressing the surrounding feature wall with a large-scale forest mural”
Breathe Easy: High Quality Inks Provide Toxin-Free Air Quality A hidden barrier to a child’s concentration and sleep quality during the hectic school term is poor indoor air quality. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) commonly found in traditional solventbased paints can cause subtle headaches and afternoon lethargy. The Decor Tip: When redecorating for the new school year, choose materials that protect indoor air health. Opt for wallcoverings printed with water-based HP Latex inks on breathable non-woven papers. Holding prestigious GREENGUARD Gold and UL ECOLOGO certifications, this technology ensures the room remains odorless, allowing your child to sleep safely in the room. ichmond Oak Glazed Extensions creates bespoke oak-framed and painted Hardwood living spaces for homeowners who want to add character, light and practical space to their properties. Specialising in oak conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms, the company focuses on designing extensions that feel individual rather than standardised. A Richmond Oak glazed extension is designed to bring the outdoors closer while improving the way a home can be enjoyed throughout the year. The combination of glass and seasoned oak allows natural light to flow through the room, while the warmth and texture of the oak frame helps the extension blend beautifully with its garden setting. Whether the aim is a larger kitchen, a tranquil garden retreat or a stylish entertaining area, the company’s approach is centred on creating a room that feels both elegant and functional. By using fully seasoned oak a unique dual colour option is possible where the outside can be painted to match the house and still have a natural oak interior. The business places strong emphasis on craftsmanship and durability. Its extensions are built using fully seasoned oak, chosen for its strength, stability and long-lasting appeal. Richmond Oak also highlights the importance of comfort, using features such as solar control glass, ventilation and heating solutions to help make its glazed spaces usable in every season. Using their unique solar control glass glazing to roof and frames you will not find it too hot in Summer or too cold in Winter. Another key part of the Richmond Oak service is its support through the full design and build journey. The process begins with a consultation, followed by a bespoke design stage that can include 3D illustrations. Once the design is

The Best Luxury Dog Beds for Keeping Dogs Cool and Content in Hot Weather
A
ward-winning British luxury dog bed designers Charley Chau have been keeping canines in sublime comfort since 2010, with thousands of happy customers in over 60 countries worldwide. Paired with beautiful styling and exceptional performance, Charley Chau is a dog lover’s perfect summer destination for bedding that will help keep a furry friend cool and content when temperatures rise. Charley Chau shares their shopping edit of the best luxury dog beds for summer 2026, which combine cooling comfort with beautiful design for a home’s interiors to help with hot days and balmy nights.
Stretch Out, Cool Down Christine Chau, Creative Director & Chief Product Designer for Charley Chau says: “Dogs don’t cool down by sweating like humans. Along with panting, one of the ways that dogs cool themselves down is to lie down on their side and stretch out fully, so they can release heat through their paws and ears, as well as redirected their blood to their skin to release heat.” Charley Chau’s classic pillow-style dog bed mattress is perfectly suited for dogs to stretch out and cool down, plus they are super easy to move around the home (or garden) in pursuit of a cool spot to get further respite from the heat. Colours Count Many dog owners choose dark colours for dog bedding as they’re more forgiving on visible dirt, but dark colours absorb, retain and radiate much more heat from sunlight than pale colours. In hot weather, Charley Chau recommends choose pale colours for a dog’s bedding to help create a cooler sleep sanctuary for a dog. Cool Cotton for the Burrow Obsessed in OnTrend Spots While humans may be melting to a puddle, many dogs still seek cosy sleeping spaces even during warm weather, particularly breeds such as Dachshunds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds and Vizslas, who feel the cold easily.

The Dog Snuggle Bed in on-trend Dotty Cotton offers the security of Charley Chau’s signature sleeping bag-style design while using a breathable cotton outer fabric that feels cooler than heavier upholstery materials. The bed also allows dogs to move easily between sleeping under the cover and on top of it throughout the day, helping them regulate their own comfort levels. Elevated Cool Raised dog beds are a smart-weather choice because air can circulate beneath the sleeping surface. Charley Chau’s Raised Rattan Dog Bed as shown above combines this practical cooling benefit with one of the biggest interiors trends of recent years: natural rattan furniture - something Charley Chau offers in many other ‘basket’ dog bed styles. Layer for Cool Nights Whilst it may be hot during the day, temperatures can drop significantly overnight. Draping a blanket in their bed such as the Charley Chau Double Fleece Blanket at night-time is the easiest way to ensure a dog is cosy when the air is cooler. Then during the day, if it’s hot simply roll up the blanket and put it to one side of the bed. Trusted by customers in over 60 countries worldwide, Charley Chau beds and blankets are not just supremely comfortable – keeping dogs cosy, calm and content through their lifetime – they’re also designed to stand up to the practicalities of everyday life, making them a wise investment for a dog and the home, no matter the season. Their range of luxe bedding looks beautiful in the home too. Shop for a dog’s summer snoozing at Charleychau.com.
