Helios by Luke Jerram set to brighten ‘dull’ January

Photo credit: Helios by Luke Jerram

Following the success of renowned UK artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon at St Albans Cathedral, St Albans Museum + Gallery now turns its gaze to the Sun – unveiling Helios, Jerram’s extraordinary and immersive installation that promises to bathe the city in brilliance. Free to the public, the artwork will be on display until 25 January 2026.

H

elios, which in ancient Greek mythology is the God who personifies the Sun, invites visitors to reflect on the immense power of Earth’s star, while celebrating science and art in equal measure. Farhana Begum, Arts, Tourism, Heritage and Culture Manager at St Albans City & District Council, and Head of St Albans Museums, said: “January can often feel a bit gloomy, so we hope this solar spectacle brings a burst of brightness to everyone who visits. It’s the perfect moment for people to experience an installation that both educates and inspires. By bringing this monumental Sun sculpture, Helios, into the grand Assembly Room, we’re offering a unique and uplifting experience for families, schools, art lovers and curious minds alike.” Helios is a dramatic six-metre-diameter spherical sculpture of the Sun. At an approximate scale of 1:230 million, every centimetre of the internally lit sphere represents roughly 2,300 km of the Sun’s surface. The surface imagery is composed of 72 dpi

high-resolution photographs of the Sun, compiled from 400,000 of astrophotographer Dr Stuart Green’s images (taken between May 2018 and June 2024) and NASA observations, with guidance from solar scientist Professor Lucie Green of University College London. Because looking directly at the Sun is unsafe, Helios offers a unique and imaginative opportunity to explore the Sun’s features including its sunspots, spicules, filaments, and even the source region of the solar flares that produced the Northern Lights visible from the UK in May 2024. Multidisciplinary artist, Luke Jerram, said: “The importance of the Sun for all life on planet Earth cannot be understated. Highly venerated and influencing humanity since the dawn of time, it has fascinated scientists, inspired musicians, poets and artists, in societies right across the world. The position of the Sun in relation to the Earth alters constantly and as such, this relationship has been used as a timekeeper, defining our measurement of time and calendars throughout the ages. “As well as provoking a sense of awe and wonder with the opportunity to see our most important celestial body up close, I hope that Helios will prompt important discussion about different issues, such as the environment, physical and mental health and wellbeing. Presenting Helios in the middle of winter, when it’s cold outside and sunshine is scarce, might have the potential to make visitors feel better!” Jerram’s installation is enhanced by a speciallycrafted surround-sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson - artists who are known for creating sonic-experiences that engage audiences - fusing solar imagery, light and sound into a transcendent visitor experience. Visitors can enjoy a lively programme of events alongside the display, perfect for all ages seeking warmth, light, and connection. A radiant art-experience that illuminates imaginations, Helios runs from 27 December 2025 to 25 January 2026 at St Albans Museum + Gallery. Entry is free and donations are welcome. A booking system is in place. stalbansmuseums.org.uk @stalbansmuseums

GET ACTIVE THIS WINTER: Outdoor Fitness Across Herts

A

s New Year resolutions gather momentum, late January and early February are an ideal time to embrace Hertfordshire’s wide range of outdoor fitness opportunities. From community runs and walking groups to cycling routes, golf and gym offers, the county provides plenty of ways to stay active, motivated and social throughout the winter months. A popular starting point for many is parkrun, the free weekly 5km run, jog or walk held every Saturday morning at locations including Cassiobury Park (Watford), Gadebridge Park (Hemel Hempstead), Verulamium Park (St Albans), Stevenage and Panshanger Park (Welwyn Garden City). Open to all abilities, parkrun is as much about community as it is about fitness, welcoming walkers, first-timers and experienced runners alike. Its friendly, inclusive atmosphere makes it an easy way to build a regular outdoor routine. Walking groups also come into their own at this time of year. Organisations such as Hertfordshire Ramblers and Age UK Hertfordshire offer guided walks ranging from gentle social strolls to more energetic countryside routes. These walks provide an opportunity to enjoy Hertfordshire’s varied 22 JANUARY 2026

landscapes — from parkland and woodland to rolling countryside — while improving fitness, wellbeing and confidence, particularly for those easing back into activity after the festive break. For runners keen to push a little further, organised winter trail runs and timed challenges take place across Hertfordshire during January and February. These events often allow participants to choose their own pace or distance, making them ideal stepping stones towards spring races. Cyclists are also making the most of quieter winter routes, with informal group rides and trafficfree paths such as the Alban Way, Cole Green Way and Ayot Greenway offering scenic, accessible options for staying fit while exploring the county. Golf fits naturally into the New Year reset too. Hertfordshire’s golf courses and driving ranges frequently promote winter coaching packages, beginner sessions and reduced green fees at this time of year. With calmer courses and crisp winter air, it’s a rewarding way to stay active outdoors while building skills ahead of the spring season. Alongside outdoor activities, many local gyms and leisure centres across Hertfordshire run January promotions and discounted trials, making it easier to balance indoor training with fresh-air fitness. Together, these options make late winter an ideal moment to reconnect with movement, community and the outdoors — showing that staying active in Hertfordshire doesn’t have to wait for warmer weather

WINTER WALKS IN AND AROUND HERTFORDSHIRE

T

here is something undeniably romantic about a winter walk. The air feels sharper, colours become more muted and elegant, and familiar landscapes take on a quieter, more contemplative beauty. Hertfordshire, with its rolling countryside, historic estates and gently winding waterways, is particularly enchanting during the colder months. Wrapped in a scarf and sturdy boots, winter reveals some of the county’s most memorable walks — peaceful, picturesque and deeply restorative.

BROCKET HALL ESTATE Brocket Hall is a lovely choice for a winter walk offering a peaceful, informal countryside feel rather than a managed visitor attraction. While the hall itself is private, a network of public footpaths runs through the surrounding estate, giving walkers access to rolling parkland, woodland edges and views across the Broadwater lake. There’s plenty of space to stretch your legs, with gentle, flat routes that work well in colder months, and the landscape feels especially atmospheric in winter when the trees are bare and the estate is quieter. 42 JANUARY 2026

ASHRIDGE ESTATE, BERKHAMSTED

Ashridge Estate is magnificent at any time of year, but in winter it feels especially grand. Ancient beech trees stand tall and skeletal against pale skies, their roots twisting through frosted earth. Wide, well-maintained paths make this a perfect choice for crisp morning walks, while quieter woodland trails invite exploration. On colder days, mist lingers in the valleys, creating an almost cinematic atmosphere. After your walk, the nearby village of Berkhamsted offers excellent cafés for warming up with coffee or hot chocolate.

THE GRAND UNION CANAL, TRING TO MARSWORTH For a gentler, more reflective winter walk, the Grand Union Canal is ideal. Stretching through Tring and beyond, the towpath remains accessible year-round and takes on a serene beauty in winter. Still water reflects bare trees and passing narrowboats, while swans and moorhens glide quietly along the canal. This route is mostly flat, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll, and the absence of summer crowds allows you to truly enjoy the calm.

this a sensory delight. It’s also a wonderful spot for wildlife lovers, with birds particularly active during colder months.

THE RIVER LEA WALK, HERTFORD Starting in Hertford and stretching north and south, the River Lea offers a peaceful waterside walk steeped in local character. Winter highlights the river’s gentle curves and historic surroundings, with old bridges, water meadows and quiet towpaths creating a picturesque route. Hertford itself is ideal for a pre- or post-walk wander, combining independent shops, historic buildings and inviting eateries.

ST ALBANS TO REDBOURN COUNTRYSIDE WALK

KNEBWORTH HOUSE Knebworth House is one of Hertfordshire’s most iconic estates and works well for winter walking thanks to the public rights of way that cross its extensive parkland and surrounding countryside. These footpaths allow you to enjoy long, open walks with views of the historic house, mature trees and wide fields, without needing to pay for entry. While the formal gardens and attractions near the house may be seasonal or ticketed, there is more than enough accessible countryside to create a satisfying winter walk, particularly for those who enjoy big skies, wildlife sightings and a classic estate landscape.

HATFIELD HOUSE PARK AND GARDENS Few places blend history and natural beauty as seamlessly as Hatfield House. The parkland surrounding this Jacobean masterpiece is vast and varied, offering sweeping views, woodland paths and open fields where frost sparkles in the early light. Winter is an excellent time to appreciate the estate’s scale and elegance without distraction. Red deer roam the grounds, and the stillness lends the walk a stately, almost timeless quality.

BROXBOURNE WOODS NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE Broxbourne Woods is one of Hertfordshire’s finest ancient woodlands and comes into its own in winter. With leaves fallen, the forest feels lighter and more spacious, revealing hidden paths and woodland details often missed in summer. The crunch of frost underfoot and the occasional flash of winter sunlight through bare branches make 44 JANUARY 2026

“Few places blend history and natural beauty as seamlessly as Hatfield House”

This route blends history with countryside charm. Leaving St Albans’ cathedral city behind, the path leads into open farmland and gentle hills towards Redbourn. Winter enhances the sense of space, with wide skies and fields dusted with frost. The cathedral makes a striking backdrop at the start of the walk, and the route feels refreshingly rural despite its proximity to town. Winter walking in Hertfordshire offers more than just fresh air — it provides moments of quiet luxury, where time slows and landscapes reveal their most elegant side. Whether you seek woodland stillness, open heathland or riverside calm, the county’s winter walks invite you to step outside, breathe deeply and enjoy the season’s understated beauty.

THE ROYAL WARRANT HOLDERS

F

rom luxury cars to painting & decorating, to horse feed to fine art and to soap, the Royal Warrant holders belong to a very special club. The history of the Royal Warrant can be traced back to medieval times, when competition for Royal favour was intense and the Monarch had the pick of the country’s best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of the Royal Household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – a practice that continues to this day. A Royal Warrant of Appointment – A crest that states “By Appointment To…” is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Royal Households for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement.

46 JANUARY 2026

The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. HM The King and Queen Camilla has since appointed HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Princess of Wales as Grantors of Royal Warrants, beginning in Spring 2026 when grants will be made to selected Royal Warrant holders. When the late Queen Elizabeth II sadly passed away, the circa 800 companies holding her royal stamp of approval had only two years remaining to display her coat of arms. With her son, King Charles III, settling into his role as monarch, it was only a matter of time before he unveiled his own selection of preferred companies – 145 were revealed in May 2024 with more announced in December 2024. Queen Camilla selected her favourites, too. The difference this time, however, is that the brands were drawn from Queen Elizabeth II’s existing pool. So King Charles has had the lovely task of reinstating brands as Royal Warrant holders – and the harsher task of stripping some brands of their seal of approval (including, most notably,

chocolate makers Cadbury). Each Royal Warrant Holder is entitled to display the coat of arms of Great Britain on its packaging and in its promotional products. The next round of applications for new Royal Warrants of Appointment to any one of the four Grantors will open in May and June 2026, when any eligible company may apply. Warrants are granted to a named individual within a company, known as the Grantee, who is responsible for the correct use of the relevant Royal Arms.

TRAVEL

From Dream to Departure: How Exceptional Holidays Are Really Created

F

or many of us, the idea of a holiday begins long before a flight is booked. It might start with a photograph saved on a phone, a conversation over dinner, or simply a feeling: the desire to slow down, reconnect, celebrate, or experience something new. While inspiration is everywhere, turning a travel dream into a seamless and enriching experience is more nuanced than it appears. Exceptional holidays rarely begin with a destination alone. They begin with understanding. How do you want to feel when you arrive? What pace suits this particular moment in life? Is this a trip about rest, discovery, time together, or a careful balance of all three? For busy individuals and families, these questions are often overlooked in the rush to secure flights or accommodation. Yet they are what ensure a holiday feels personal rather than generic. Once the vision is clear, the real design work begins. Creating a well-considered journey involves far more than assembling bookings. It requires attention to timing, routing, balance, and flow, ensuring that each element complements the next. Hotel choice plays a defining role. Two properties with the same star rating can offer very different experiences depending on location, atmosphere, service style, and attention to detail. The right hotel can elevate an entire trip; the

50 JANUARY 2026

wrong one can quietly undermine it. This is where experience, insight, and trusted relationships matter most. Equally important is knowing when to include structure and when to leave space. The most memorable journeys allow room for spontaneity, rest, and those unexpected moments that cannot be planned. Much of what makes a holiday exceptional happens behind the scenes. It is the coordination of transfers that run smoothly, guides who understand individual interests, and itineraries designed with real-world knowledge rather than guesswork. It is also about anticipating challenges before they arise and ensuring support is available if plans need to change. When a holiday has been thoughtfully designed, departure feels different. There is confidence rather than chaos, excitement rather than lastminute stress. Travellers leave knowing not only where they are going, but why each choice has been made. In an age of endless choice, exceptional travel is not about doing more. It is about doing things better. The best holidays do not happen by accident. They are designed, from dream to departure and beyond. Begin your journey at littlecompasstravel.com and let us take care of the rest.

“M

erchant Taylors’ School blends centuries of tradition with a bold, forward-thinking ethos. Set across 280 acres in Northwood, it provides a dynamic and rigorous education for boys aged 11–18, combining academic ambition with personal growth. Founded in 1561, the School has long been known for academic excellence, but its true strength lies in the way it nurtures the whole person - developing intellect, character and confidence in equal measure. Every boy is known, valued and supported through a distinctive coaching culture that sits at the heart of school life. Teachers act as mentors as well as educators, engaging boys in thoughtful conversations about their progress and aspirations. Through this approach, pupils learn to take ownership of their learning, to reflect on their strengths, and to see challenge as an opportunity for growth. The curriculum evolves from broad foundations in the lower years to deep subject mastery in the Sixth Form, supported by exceptional co-curricular opportunities in music, sport, drama, service and leadership. Our boys also have the chance to involve themselves in a variety of charitable partnerships, taking leading roles in the organisation, fundraising and engagement with them. Our flagship partnership with Phab, raises money and culminates in an annual two week long residential camp lead by our Sixth Formers. The breadth ensures that every boy can explore his interests and discover his passions in an environment that celebrates individuality and encourages curiosity. Merchant Taylors’ is also a place of innovation and reflection. New ideas are welcomed, and both staff and pupils are encouraged to embrace change with confidence and creativity. This innovation is reflected in the cutting edge facilities on offer, from a world-class indoor cricket training facility

Pastoral care runs through the fabric of school life, ensuring that wellbeing, empathy and moral courage are central to every boy’s journey. Our system of vertical tutoring places pupils across all year groups into small groups with a dedicated tutor who knows, understands and supports their individual needs and development. When joining the School, new boys will have familiar and friendly faces across all age groups they can turn to and, thanks to our focus on a coaching culture, will mature into being role models themselves for new students who join in subsequent years. The result is a holistic education that prepares boys not only to excel academically but also to make a meaningful contribution to the world beyond school. Benefits of the independent school

ith options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.

ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.

CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualized attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing 62 JANUARY 2026

their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.

DEDICATED TEACHERS Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT Private schools typically maintain clear

programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.

expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.

AMPLE RESOURCES Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. These activities help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, and social skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.

Here, childhood is treasured. We believe those first steps in education should be filled with wonder, joy, creativity, and hands-on experiences that ignite a lifelong love of learning. Our Pre-Prep, complete with nursery, adventure playgrounds, woodland dens, an animal homestead, and an accredited forest school, has been hailed by The Good Schools Guide as an “infant utopia.” It’s where the foundations for future success are laid. At Heath Mount, education goes beyond academics, taking a ‘whole person’ approach. We nurture empathy, resilience, kindness, and 68 JANUARY 2026

confidence—qualities that prepare pupils for life. Achievement is measured by personal growth, ensuring every child feels valued and supported. This ethos empowers pupils to embrace opportunities, knowing that with effort and belief, anything is possible. Our small class sizes, specialist teaching, and vibrant extracurricular programme enable pupils to flourish. Many secure places at the UK’s most prestigious senior schools, including Eton, Harrow, Westminster, Haileybury, St Albans, Brighton College, Oundle, Rugby, and Millfield. Remarkably, around 50% of leavers achieve one or more scholarships across academics, music, art, drama, and sport. In Years 7 and 8, our renowned enrichment programme allows pupils to explore passions beyond the curriculum through mentoring, workshops, and trips. Senior pupils can also broaden their horizons with transformative, international adventures—from a 10-day cultural and charitable expedition to Zambia, to training as an astronaut at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center during our STEM trip to Florida. Girls and boys who wish to continue their education at St Albans School, after completing their Beechwood Park School journey, will also benefit from a preferential admissions process that will, subject to meeting certain criteria, provide a seamless pathway between the two schools. St Albans School’s recent announcement that it will become fully co-ed and welcome girls and boys in Year 7 from September 2026, further aligns both schools as co-educational establishments with a natural progression from 3 to 18 years. Both schools will retain their current leadership team, identity, name, ethos, values, badge and uniform policy, as well as day-to-day operational autonomy. The Governors of both Beechwood Park School and St Albans School were unanimous in their decision to move forward with this opportunity. st-albans.herts.sch.uk beechwoodpark.com

REGENIFY HEALTH: A New Kind of Restorative Space in Harpenden simply reconnect with their own baseline. Others come because they have reached the point where “pushing through” is no longer working. Helen and Richie are committed to making the experience accessible and unintimidating. They regularly hold open days where visitors can try a complimentary mini-session and ask questions in a relaxed setting. It’s an easy way to understand whether the technology may be helpful.

R

egenify Health is not a spa, a clinic or a meditation studio, although clients often say it feels like a blend of all three. Founded by Helen and Richie in Harpenden, and now also in Berkhamsted, Regenify Health focuses on something most people rarely experience: uninterrupted physiological reset. In a world where stress and overstimulation have become a normal baseline, that reset matters more than ever. At the centre of their work is the Human Regenerator, one of only five commercial devices in the UK. The device uses Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) to create an electron-rich environment around the body. While the science is advanced, the experience is intentionally simple: you lie down, settle in, breathe and let the body respond. Clients frequently describe a shift, sometimes subtle, sometimes surprisingly pronounced, towards clarity, calmness and physical ease. Regenify Health’s approach is grounded in the belief that the body is constantly trying to regulate itself, but modern living makes that harder. Long-term stress, poor sleep, chronic low-level inflammation and digital overload all interfere with the body’s ability to repair and maintain balance. The Human Regenerator offers a structured environment that supports those processes without forcing anything or overwhelming the system. Many people come because they want to sleep better, think more clearly, feel less inflamed or

The White Topaz version in particular has become a favourite among clients both in the UK and at their recently opened Upper East Side boutique in New York, an impressive achievement following the store’s launch in March. KEEP YOUR CYCLING ON TRACK Prevent Knee Pain from Interrupting Your Cycling By Mr David George

A

s we jump into January and embrace our New Year’s fitness resolutions, many are hopping on bikes for some exercise. But it’s not just excitement that’s on the rise – knee pain often tags along for the ride. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a weekend cyclist, knee discomfort can derail your momentum. Understanding the types of pain you might experience is key to avoiding these injuries. Here we look at common injuries and how to treat them: • Anterior knee pain – the most common cycling-related injury affecting the front of the knee around the knee-cap (patella). It’s typically due to pressure from repetitive pedalling, leading to patellofemoral pain syndrome or patellar tendinopathy (inflammation of the tendon beneath the patella). These issues respond well to ice, physiotherapy, and targeted muscle work. • Posterior knee pain – though less common pain at the back of the knee often stems from overextending the knee, and usually caused by incorrect saddle height stretching the structures here. If the pain persists it may indicate a tear of the meniscus (cartilage cushions within the knee) or a Baker’s Cyst and should be medically assessed. 94 JANUARY 2026

Your doctor can discuss best treatment options for you. • Pain on the sides of the knee; inside (medial) or outside (lateral) – this may relate to your feet position when using new cycling cleats. Ensuring your cleat is in the correct position before and during push off and cycling will help avoid such pain. Pain when twisting the foot to release the cleats may be due to a meniscus tear and best discussed with your doctor. • Iliotibial band syndrome – a tight band sits to the outer aspect of your knee and may become irritated and painful. Often this is due to weaker muscles around the buttocks (gluteal muscles) pulling the patella out of alignment. It is best treated initially with rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications, followed by physiotherapy and targeted muscle work. However if knee pain persists, we’re here to help you along the way to get back to the things you love. At Rivers Hospital and Pinehill Hospital we offer fast and convenient access to treatment, call us on 0808 239 7912 or scan the QR code to find out more information. ramsayhealth.co.uk

8 NEW LEADING LIGHTS TO BRING WITH US IN 2026 The Seki-Han by Tobia Scarpa, Flos

W

hat’s new in lighting land? A quiet revolution in form, colour, and material. It’s not simply about illumination – it’s about imagination. The latest creations fuse craft skill and conscience, reviving icons, redefining the building blocks and revealing how light can infuse a space with personality and presence. The Seki-Han by Tobia Scarpa, Flos The return of a little-known 1963 design, renowned Italian architect and designer Tobia Scarpa’s Seki-Han floor lamp has been respectfully updated to create a modern piece of lighting poetry. A pair of wooden blades that conceal a central LED source, the design comes in its original vertical form, as well as in a new horizontal suspension format. In an update to the 60s original, the ash wood timber rotates to vary the intensity of the light, turning the structures into living artworks that emit warm, symmetrical glows. 102 JANUARY 2026

Criosfera by Giulia Foscari, Artemide Created by Giulia Foscari, Venetian architect and founder of UNA / UNLESS, a design studio and non-profit platform which explores extreme environments, Criosfera is at once a decorative lighting collection and an ecological call to arms. The floor, suspension, and table lamps put Antarctica in the spotlight, their cylindricality referencing the scientific instruments used to extract and analyse ice cores. Comprising layers of recycled glass with an LED centre that diffuses light while concealing its source deep within, Criosfera is both a captivating object and a piece of activism, reminding us of our planet’s environmental crises and urging reflection and action to protect them. Fragile by Jaume Ramírez, Marset The aptly named table lamp by Barcelonabased designer Jaume Ramírez has grown up into a full collection, with a new size, wall and pendant version on the horizon. With its three delicate elements – the sphere, the cone and the illuminated cylinder – the piece makes geometric forms weightless and pure by playing with transparent glass and the idea of structure and softness, substance and suspension. include both shapely shades or just one on the ceiling light, which spans in size from single pendants to chandelier-like compositions. Asteea by Sofie Refer, Nuura A floral-inspired shade by Danish lighting designer Sofie Refer has blossomed into an extensive family at Nuura, the rippled bell-shaped reusable acrylic forms held softly by satin brass and organically illuminating the room without dazzling. Designed as a single table, wall, ceiling or pendant lamp, as well as larger, highly expressive three- or nine-piece chandeliers, the sensuous creation evokes ethereal glowing meadows or petals caught adrift on a breeze. Charm by Penta Lighting We’ve long called lighting ‘the jewellery of the home’, and now comes an official lighting accessory, an adornment to add to pendant lights to make them more impactful and unique. Charm is a decoration attached to the cable of Penta’s iconic Glo range, acting as its namesake charm on a bracelet would to personalise and accentuate the base piece. It comes in mini- and micro- sized balls made from high shine borosilicate glass in silver, black, gold, bronze, rose gold or green, created to slot in, bead-like, among Glo’s crystalline spheres to further bounce brilliance around and create a delicate, one-of-a-kind lighting landscape.

Map by Geckeler Modes, Lodes Brightness boundaries? Not here. Berlin design studio Geckeler Michels’s MAP lighting system for Lodes is something of an explorer, made up of various light points on the wall or ceiling (or wherever you may need them) connected by fabric tape fitted with conductors stretched between them that act as a graphic power supply. The shining points become stylised constellations with endless compositional possibilities to suit their specific environment.

Grässhoppa Fabric by Greta M. Grossman, Gubi

Map by Geckeler Modes, Lodes

Grässhoppa Fabric by Greta M. Grossman, Gubi The Gräshoppa Table Lamp by Swedish designer and architect Greta M. Grossman has been a perennial lighting design classic since its inception in the 1940s, its minimal insect-like shape with its elongated conical shade an instantly familiar silhouette for design fans. The lamp has been updated with a fabric shade that transforms it into something fresh and almost unrecognisable. The handmade natural canvas shade sits atop the distinctive angled stem and round base, bringing volume where before the light was compact and diminutive, the update inspired by an early prototype. Topan VP13 by Verner Panton, Verpan: Danish design legend Verner Panton’s 1959-conceived Topan has been given a fresh lease on life with a reissue as a floor and table lamp. Spherical lacquered or plated aluminium in Chrome, Grey Beige or Vermillion Red supported by an oversized transparent tubular acrylic stand, the piece becomes sculptural, as well as both whimsical and surreal, as well as distinctly Space Age-style futuristic. chaplins.co.uk JANUARY 2026 103

HOW TO MAKE A BEDROOM FEEL WARMER

Debbie Leigh, Design Manager at ILIV, shares her tips on creating the perfect cosy bedroom this Winter

Use throws and layer bedding One of the quickest ways to infuse that warm and cosy ambiance we all crave, especially during the cooler months, is by incorporating layers of soft furnishings into our bedrooms. Adding elements such as throws, cushions, and curtains can transform your sleeping space into a snug haven. Cleverly layered textiles not only establish a cohesive bedroom aesthetic but also contribute to a comforting atmosphere. The choice of soft furnishings significantly influences the overall feel of the room. Thoughtfully layer plains and patterns; when opting for bold patterns on bedding or curtains, consider keeping the cushions in a plain design or selecting a solid fabric for the bedding while experimenting with a mix of colours and patterns for the throw pillows. Consider Colour and Accent Shades Warm colours are often favoured for the winter months as they create a cosy feel - colours that evoke a sense of warmth include rich reds and oranges, golds, mustard, and berry shades. Avoid the icy embrace of cool tones like blues and greys, and opt for warmer hues such as earthy 104 JANUARY 2026

neutrals, soft blush pinks, or gentle greens. Use these colours in layers of soft furnishings, such as throws, cushions, and curtains and you’ll soon find your room feeling warm and snug creating a sense of comfort which is known to boost well-being.

“The choice of soft furnishings significantly influences the overall feel of the room”

Choose Quality Curtains to trap heat Good quality lined curtains are worth the investment. They are suitable all-year-round offering temperature control and privacy and their ability to help keep the cold air from seeping into the home makes them particularly useful during the autumn and winter months. Blackout and thermal linings are great for bedroom curtains as they help to keep the room warm, increase energy efficiency, and block out unwanted light promoting a good night’s sleep. Thermal linings will greatly reduce the amount of heat that may escape your room via your windows helping your bedroom to feel much warmer. Consider combining both blinds and curtains to create a snug and energy-efficient bedroom, blinds nestled in the window recess will complement lined curtains perfectly, offering added insulation. iliv.co.uk

“Rather than applying a signature style, the studio begins with discovery”

T

he most memorable homes are never simply decorated. They are shaped with intent, considered in detail and curated in a way that speaks to the lives unfolding within them. This is the philosophy of Novaco Design, a creative studio known for crafting interiors that are as individual as the people who inhabit them. Rather than applying a signature style, the studio begins with discovery. Every project is approached as a conversation, a process of understanding how clients wish to live and who they are at their core. Rhythms of daily life, personal tastes, stories and ambitions all become touchpoints for design. From these insights, spaces emerge that feel authentic and enduring. The results are homes of quiet sophistication and lasting resonance. A townhouse shaped to balance heritage with modern living. A city apartment refined as a sanctuary of calm. A countryside retreat reconnected to its surroundings. Each project is unique, yet each carries a sense of belonging. The process is highly collaborative and guided with clarity from the earliest ideas through to the final detail. Novaco brings together space planning, interior architecture and considered material selection with the technical precision needed for smooth delivery.
