Independent School of the Year 2025

On Saturday 21st March Knebworth House will be reopening their doors for the 2026 season. Knebworth House, Park, Gardens, Adventure Playground and Dinosaur Trail will be open weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from 21st March until 27th September. And again, this year, are offering a discounted rate on tickets that are pre-booked online before arrival. Check out the top things to do at Knebworth House this season.
There is something undeniably romantic about a Hertfordshire Winter walk. The air feels sharper, colours become more muted and elegant, and familiar landscapes take on a quieter, more contemplative beauty. Hertfordshire, with its rolling countryside, historic estates and gently winding waterways, is particularly enchanting during the colder months. Wrapped in a scarf and sturdy boots, winter reveals some of the county’s most memorable walks - peaceful, picturesque and deeply restorative.
Few places blend history and natural beauty as seamlessly as Hatfield House. The parkland surrounding this Jacobean masterpiece is vast and varied, offering sweeping views, woodland paths and open fields where frost sparkles in the early light. Winter is an excellent time to appreciate the estate’s scale and elegance without distraction. Red deer roam the grounds, and the stillness lends the walk a stately, almost timeless quality.

Step into the shoes of a vet this February half term at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, as Vets in Action - an exciting and immersive role-playing experience for children - lets budding veterinarians put their animal care skills to the test.
Young conservationists can roll up their sleeves and become a zoo vet, joining the action at the specially designed Zoo Vet Centre. Here, they can choose to perform a health check on a (cuddly) lion - before going to see the nine-strong pride in real life - or learn more about the conservation zoo’s chimpanzee troop, Bonnie, Grant, Phil and Elvis, who are trained to present their fingers for ECG readings to help the zoo’s vets monitor their health and wellbeing.
To get an even deeper understanding of how ZSL, the charity behind Whipsnade Zoo, has been contributing to the global understanding of wildlife for 200 years, visitors can also enjoy a special heritage tour delving into 200 years of

incredible veterinary breakthroughs, pioneering research, and stories from the front line of animal care, on the 14th and 15th Feb (pre-bookable online).
Once their shift is over, famillies can explore the rest of the zoo’s beautiful 600-acre site, which is home to more than 11,000 animals, including two 3-month old giraffe calves and a one-month old southern white rhino calf.
This February half-term, families can enjoy 30% off a fantastic day out with their loved ones when visiting Whipsnade Zoo by booking with the code LOVE30, active from Monday 26 January, for any visit during the half-term week from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd Feb 2026.

As New Year resolutions gather momentum, late January and early February are an ideal time to embrace Hertfordshire’s wide range of outdoor fitness opportunities. From community runs and walking groups to cycling routes, golf and gym offers, the county provides plenty of ways to stay active, motivated and social throughout the winter months.
A popular starting point for many is parkrun, the free weekly 5km run, jog or walk held every Saturday morning at locations including Cassiobury Park (Watford), Gadebridge Park (Hemel Hempstead), Verulamium Park (St Albans), Stevenage and Panshanger Park (Welwyn Garden City). Open to all abilities, parkrun is as much about community as it is about fitness, welcoming walkers, first-timers and experienced runners alike. Its friendly, inclusive atmosphere makes it an easy way to build a regular outdoor routine.
Walking groups also come into their own at this time of year. Organisations such as Hertfordshire Ramblers and Age UK Hertfordshire offer guided walks ranging from gentle social strolls to more energetic countryside routes. These walks provide an opportunity to enjoy Hertfordshire’s varied
landscapes — from parkland and woodland to rolling countryside — while improving fitness, wellbeing and confidence, particularly for those easing back into activity after the festive break.
For runners keen to push a little further, organised winter trail runs and timed challenges take place across Hertfordshire during January and February. These events often allow participants to choose their own pace or distance, making them ideal stepping stones towards spring races.
Cyclists are also making the most of quieter winter routes, with informal group rides and trafficfree paths such as the Alban Way, Cole Green Way and Ayot Greenway offering scenic, accessible options for staying fit while exploring the county.
Golf fits naturally into the New Year reset too. Hertfordshire’s golf courses and driving ranges frequently promote winter coaching packages, beginner sessions and reduced green fees at this time of year. With calmer courses and crisp winter air, it’s a rewarding way to stay active outdoors while building skills ahead of the spring season.
Alongside outdoor activities, many local gyms and leisure centres across Hertfordshire run January promotions and discounted trials, making it easier to balance indoor training with fresh-air fitness.
Together, these options make late winter an ideal moment to reconnect with movement, community and the outdoors — showing that staying active in Hertfordshire doesn’t have to wait for warmer weather

Discovering that you will not share in a parent’s or loved one’s estate can come as a real shock. This could occur if they’ve not got a Will or if they have, then that Will does not make provision for them. For many people, the issue is not about money but about feeling overlooked or misunderstood at a deeply emotional time.
The first thing to know is that being excluded does not always mean there is nothing you can do. While people are generally free to leave their estate as they wish, the law also recognises that certain close family members and dependants may need financial support.
Under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, some individuals are entitled to ask the Court to consider whether the Will, or the rules of intestacy, made adequate reasonable financial provision for them. This scenario might affect adult children who were financially dependent on a parent, individuals who provided care in later life, long-term partners who lived together but never married and even surviving spouses.
Timing is particularly important. A claim under the Inheritance Act must be brought within 6 months of issue of the Grant of Representation. Many people delay seeking advice in the hope that matters will resolve themselves within the family,

“A
claim under the Inheritance Act must be brought within 6 months of issue of the Grant of Representation”
only to discover later that their legal options have become limited.
It is also worth understanding that not every sense of unfairness gives rise to a claim. Your legal advisor will, however, be able to provide advice on whether you have grounds to advance a claim. Importantly, many inheritance disputes are resolved through negotiation rather than Court proceedings. Taking early, discreet advice can help you understand your position and decide how best to move forward.
If you are facing an inheritance dispute, early advice is crucial. Understanding your position, your rights, and the time limits that apply can help you make informed decisions at a difficult moment and, where possible, prevent the situation from permanently dividing a family. Feel free to reach out to our team for advice if you find yourself in this situation.

There is something undeniably romantic about a winter walk. The air feels sharper, colours become more muted and elegant, and familiar landscapes take on a quieter, more contemplative beauty. Hertfordshire, with its rolling countryside, historic estates and gently winding waterways, is particularly enchanting during the colder months. Wrapped in a scarf and sturdy boots, winter reveals some of the county’s most memorable walks — peaceful, picturesque and deeply restorative.
Brocket Hall is a lovely choice for a winter walk offering a peaceful, informal countryside feel rather than a managed visitor attraction. While the hall itself is private, a network of public footpaths runs through the surrounding estate, giving walkers access to rolling parkland, woodland edges and views across the Broadwater lake. There’s plenty of space to stretch your legs, with gentle, flat routes that work well in colder months, and the landscape feels especially atmospheric in winter when the trees are bare and the estate is quieter.
Ashridge Estate is magnificent at any time of year, but in winter it feels especially grand. Ancient beech trees stand tall and skeletal against pale skies, their roots twisting through frosted earth. Wide, well-maintained paths make this a perfect choice for crisp morning walks, while quieter woodland trails invite exploration. On colder days, mist lingers in the valleys, creating an almost cinematic atmosphere. After your walk, the nearby village of Berkhamsted offers excellent cafés for warming up with coffee or hot chocolate.
For a gentler, more reflective winter walk, the Grand Union Canal is ideal. Stretching through Tring and beyond, the towpath remains accessible year-round and takes on a serene beauty in winter. Still water reflects bare trees and passing narrowboats, while swans and moorhens glide quietly along the canal. This route is mostly flat, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll, and the absence of summer crowds allows you to truly enjoy the calm.

“The landscape feels especially atmospheric in winter when the trees are bare and the estate is quieter”

Knebworth House is one of Hertfordshire’s most iconic estates and works well for winter walking thanks to the public rights of way that cross its extensive parkland and surrounding countryside. These footpaths allow you to enjoy long, open walks with views of the historic house, mature trees and wide fields, without needing to pay for entry. While the formal gardens and attractions near the house may be seasonal or ticketed, there is more than enough accessible countryside to create a satisfying winter walk, particularly for those who enjoy big skies, wildlife sightings and a classic estate landscape.
Broxbourne Woods is one of Hertfordshire’s finest ancient woodlands and comes into its own in winter. With leaves fallen, the forest feels lighter and more spacious, revealing hidden paths and woodland details often missed in summer. The crunch of frost underfoot and the occasional flash of winter sunlight through bare branches make

“Few places blend history and natural beauty as seamlessly as Hatfield House”
this a sensory delight. It’s also a wonderful spot for wildlife lovers, with birds particularly active during colder months.
Starting in Hertford and stretching north and south, the River Lea offers a peaceful waterside walk steeped in local character. Winter highlights the river’s gentle curves and historic surroundings, with old bridges, water meadows and quiet towpaths creating a picturesque route. Hertford itself is ideal for a pre- or post-walk wander, combining independent shops, historic buildings and inviting eateries.
This route blends history with countryside charm. Leaving St Albans’ cathedral city behind, the path leads into open farmland and gentle hills towards Redbourn. Winter enhances the sense of space, with wide skies and fields dusted with frost. The cathedral makes a striking backdrop at the start of the walk, and the route feels refreshingly rural despite its proximity to town.
Winter walking in Hertfordshire offers more than just fresh air — it provides moments of quiet luxury, where time slows and landscapes reveal their most elegant side. Whether you seek woodland stillness, open heathland or riverside calm, the county’s winter walks invite you to step outside, breathe deeply and enjoy the season’s understated beauty.

For many of us, the idea of a holiday begins long before a flight is booked. It might start with a photograph saved on a phone, a conversation over dinner, or simply a feeling: the desire to slow down, reconnect, celebrate, or experience something new.
While inspiration is everywhere, turning a travel dream into a seamless and enriching experience is more nuanced than it appears.
Exceptional holidays rarely begin with a destination alone. They begin with understanding. How do you want to feel when you arrive? What pace suits this particular moment in life? Is this a trip about rest, discovery, time together, or a careful balance of all three?
For busy individuals and families, these questions are often overlooked in the rush to secure flights or accommodation. Yet they are what ensure a holiday feels personal rather than generic.
Once the vision is clear, the real design work begins. Creating a well-considered journey involves far more than assembling bookings. It requires attention to timing, routing, balance, and flow, ensuring that each element complements the next.
Hotel choice plays a defining role. Two properties with the same star rating can offer very different experiences depending on location, atmosphere, service style, and attention to detail. The right hotel can elevate an entire trip; the
wrong one can quietly undermine it. This is where experience, insight, and trusted relationships matter most.
Equally important is knowing when to include structure and when to leave space. The most memorable journeys allow room for spontaneity, rest, and those unexpected moments that cannot be planned.
Much of what makes a holiday exceptional happens behind the scenes. It is the coordination of transfers that run smoothly, guides who understand individual interests, and itineraries designed with real-world knowledge rather than guesswork. It is also about anticipating challenges before they arise and ensuring support is available if plans need to change.
When a holiday has been thoughtfully designed, departure feels different. There is confidence rather than chaos, excitement rather than lastminute stress. Travellers leave knowing not only where they are going, but why each choice has been made.
In an age of endless choice, exceptional travel is not about doing more. It is about doing things better. The best holidays do not happen by accident. They are designed, from dream to departure and beyond.
Begin your journey at littlecompasstravel.com and let us take care of the rest.

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.
We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!
We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.
Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.
Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.
Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.
Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.
When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.
There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.
When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.
There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.
We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.
Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.
Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.
If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.
Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.
The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.
Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings.
Professional photography is allowed anytime during our general opening hours but is subject to an additional fee.

The Painter’s Room, a bar on the ground floor of the five-star art deco landmark, Claridge’s, was conceived by interior designer Bryan O’Sullivan – and home to ground-breaking cocktails.
With a back story rich in art and design, The Painter’s Room is named as a homage to the same space at Claridge’s that was created in the 1930’s with murals by renowned artist Mary Lea.
The Painter’s Room is one of three bars, alongside the dark and glamorous Fumoir and the iconic Claridge’s Bar. Located in the space that bridges Claridge’s celebrated ballroom and the Talking Heads Gallery by Artist in Residence David Downton, The Painter’s Room is reimagined by Bryan O’Sullivan, inspired by old photos from the archives in the 1930’s.
The aesthetic pays tribute to the hotel’s Art Deco design heritage, with pale pink onyx featuring prominently. The bar, in this blush-coloured stone is the centrepiece, and is complemented by a feature skylight in peach and cream coloured glass.
British artist Annie Morris was specially commissioned to create an installation which runs across the entire space. Morris was inspired by the historic relationship between bars and artists, and how artists sit, observe, sketch and chat in bars and

the mural reflects the free sketch style with which one would scribble on the back of a menu.

FEBRUARY 2026

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make.
At Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools, students benefit from an exceptional education that blends the best of single-sex learning with the benefits of a co-educational environment.
Set on a stunning 100-acre campus in Elstree, Hertfordshire, Habs Boys and Habs Girls offer an inspiring education for students aged four to 18, encouraging intellectual ambition, strong character, and a commitment to make a profound impact in the world.
Last year, Habs achieved an incredible double recognition: winning both the award for Outstanding Educational Partnerships and the overall top accolade of Independent School of the Year 2025. The judging panel praised the school for staying true to its vision, combining academic excellence with the ambition to make a meaningful difference in the world.
With a mission to be at the forefront of education, the schools offer a dynamic and forward-thinking curriculum designed to equip students with independence, resilience, and an open mind. Innovation is embedded throughout school life, with the Director of Innovation driving initiatives that prepare students for an evolving digital landscape.
At the heart of Habs Elstree’s success is a clearly defined purpose: to empower young people to make a real difference. Their Partnerships Programme is a pioneering initiative with six
local state schools aimed at building educational opportunities for communities with average or above-average levels of disadvantage. Each week, Habs delivers over 52 hours of curriculum support and enrichment to almost 2,000 students, involving 500 Habs pupils and 56 staff.
As well as fostering the leadership skills that are central to being a Habs student, the programme improved attendance among disadvantaged pupils by 10.1% – not just for those in the programme, but at school overall – that’s the equivalent to a full extra day of school every two weeks.
While academic excellence remains a hallmark of a Habs education, a comprehensive pastoral care programme nurtures students’ emotional, social, and spiritual development. An outstanding range of co-curricular activities allows students to explore their interests and talents beyond the classroom.
With world-class facilities, ongoing campus investment, and a strong commitment to social responsibility, Habs continues to evolve, empowering students to make a profound impact in the world and exemplifying the very best of independent education today.

“This year’s Independent School of the Year has demonstrated its resilience in staying true to its vision, rather than swerving the challenges of the moment…It represents the very best qualities of the independent sector — a voice that helps the wider world to understand the powerful and positive impact of this sector.”
– Independent School of the Year

Education today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education.
Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers
Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination. Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability – qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.

“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”
Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part of a team prepares students for real-world environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement.
Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends.
Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings.
By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School, set in 15 acres of leafy grounds in Northwood, delivers the best of both worlds: a strong academic tradition with an extensive range of co-curricular and sporting activities. Located just minutes from Merchant Taylors’ senior school, it provides an excellent all-through option for high-achieving pupils.
The new Head, Miles Chester, who joined in September, brings extensive experience and a fresh, dynamic approach to the school. He is proud of the prep school’s quality of teaching and the holistic education it offers. “Through an enriched curriculum, we foster every opportunity for pupils to develop their individual potential, nurturing their unique passions, interests and aspirations. The foundation we provide ensures they are equipped with the skills and confidence to transition seamlessly to senior school,” said Mr. Chester.
The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos. From the very beginning, teachers take the time to get to know each pupil and their abilities, within a small-class setting. This allows enquiring minds to develop in an

environment where each pupil is given a sense of belonging that helps them to achieve.
Through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs and activities, boys are encouraged to try new things and explore their talents and creativity. The school uses sport to reinforce its ethos and to instil discipline, teamwork, fair play, responsibility and respect.
Having the senior school nearby offers numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in sports, music and academics. With pupils now transitioning to senior school at the end of Year 6, the school is expanding its intake for Year 3 from September 2026. “This is a great opportunity for able pupils with potential to join our school and benefit from a well-balanced education and smooth transition to the senior school”, Mr Chester added.
To explore all that Merchant Taylors’ Prep has to offer, register for one of the school’s open mornings at mtpn.org.uk.

“The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos”

London’s education landscape is undergoing a period of significant change as schools adapt to the needs of modern learners and an increasingly complex world. While academic achievement remains central, there is growing recognition that education must also support wellbeing, personal development and broader life skills.
One notable shift is the increased focus on smaller class sizes and more personalised learning. Across the capital, many schools are prioritising individual attention, enabling teachers to better understand each pupil’s strengths, challenges and learning styles. This approach supports stronger academic progress while fostering confidence and engagement in the classroom.
A more holistic approach to education is also gaining momentum. Schools are placing greater value on character development, creativity and extracurricular opportunities alongside traditional subjects. Programmes that encourage leadership, collaboration and problem-solving are increasingly embedded into school life, helping students develop skills that extend well beyond examinations.
Wellbeing and mental health have become central considerations, particularly in a fastpaced urban environment. London schools are investing in pastoral care, mindfulness initiatives and emotional literacy, recognising that students who feel supported are better equipped to succeed academically. Creating balanced learning

environments is now widely viewed as essential rather than optional.
Curriculum innovation is another defining feature of change. Many schools are expanding learning beyond standard syllabuses to include financial literacy, digital skills, global citizenship and environmental awareness. London’s rich cultural, scientific and historical resources are increasingly used to enrich teaching, bringing subjects to life through real-world context. Technology is also reshaping education across the capital. Blended learning models, digital platforms and flexible teaching approaches allow for more adaptable and inclusive learning experiences, preparing students for a future in which digital fluency is vital.
Together, these developments signal a move towards an education system that balances academic excellence with wellbeing, creativity and adaptability. As London continues to evolve, so too does its approach to educating young people — ensuring they are prepared not only for exams, but for life beyond the classroom.
“London schools are investing in pastoral care, mindfulness initiatives and emotional literacy, recognising that students who feel supported are better equipped to succeed academically”

At Nursery on the Green in Redbourn, learning is woven seamlessly into play. Through thoughtfully planned activities and experiences, children develop essential skills whilst exploring their interests, in turn laying strong foundations for a seamless transition to school.
From imaginative role play and baking in their children’s shaker-style kitchen to construction, messy play and early problem-solving, fun and engagement are central to the South Common setting’s approach. Dedicated practitioners carefully support and extend these opportunities, helping children build confidence, curiosity and independence while developing early literacy, numeracy and communication skills in meaningful ways.
Outdoor play forms an important part of daily life at Nursery on the Green, offering children valuable opportunities to explore and discover beyond the classroom. Whether mixing creations in the mud kitchen or taking to the racetrack on bikes and trikes, there is always something to inspire in the garden. Pre-schoolers lovingly tend to seasonal vegetables and herbs, which are then incorporated into nutritious meals by talented Nursery Chefs. This ‘plant to plate’ approach helps children understand where food comes from and promotes healthy lifestyle choices from an early age. The setting also boasts its own Eco-Committee, led by children who champion important habits such as saving electricity, water and reducing waste across the setting. Across many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions.
This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top.
In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity.
Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can
play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors.

“The
higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system.
As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background — and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

Science at Sarum Hall School is brought to life from the very earliest years, with pupils encouraged to explore, question and discover the world around them. Lessons are deliberately practical and hands-on, helping pupils to develop their confidence and a genuine love of learning.
The school aims to spark curiosity and a sense of wonder through its science lessons. Rather than memorising facts, pupils are encouraged to observe carefully, ask questions and think in an evidence-based way. From fossils and plants to digestion and dissections, pupils explore the breadth and excitement of science through real, hands-on investigation.
Practical learning is at the heart of the curriculum. Last term, Year 4 pupils became engineers, designing and building matchstick structures using strong triangular shapes. Their
buildings were placed on a jelly “earthquake” base and tested to see which designs could withstand a tremor. In Year 5, pupils explored forces by creating parachutes from recycled plastic bags, discovering how size affects air resistance and velocity. This helped pupils to understand gravity, drag and how real parachutes work.
Through excitement, experimentation and encouragement, science at Sarum Hall School inspires confident, curious learners who are ready for the future.

With options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.
One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular
learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.
Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualized attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.
“91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”

Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.
Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.
Private schools typically maintain clear expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.
Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.
While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. These activities help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, and social

private schools,
you’ll find
incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”
skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.
Private schools often go beyond standard curriculum requirements by offering specialized programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.

The Sixth Form years are all about building confident, engaged future citizens. At Berkhamsted School, we understand that this begins with exceptional academic support.
Berkhamsted Sixth, located in the new Zaha Hadid Sixth Form building, is a forward-thinking site designed to reflect how young people learn, work and collaborate in the modern world.
The open-plan design of the building contains extensive space for both collaboration and independent study, allowing students to experiment with different studying styles. Classrooms feature boardroom-style tables inspired by the Harkness model, which help to ensure that our classes are structured around discussion, collaboration and student voice.
We know that learning does not stop in the classroom, so we bolster our student’s education with extensive stretch opportunities. Our Crawford Society is a student-led oracy club where students present weekly on a personal research project, encapsulating the way Berkhamsted fosters confidence and high-level academic discussion.

Students attend weekly specialist subject tutoring, and benefit from 1 to 1 tutor support to ensure that their learning is continually stretched.
For those students interested in Oxbridge or other high-level Universities, our dedicated consultant hosts fortnightly one to ones, alongside frequent group study meetings to build the critical thinking skills and subject knowledge required to thrive on difficult courses. Last year, nearly 1 in in 6 students secured places at a top 5 UK University, and twenty-one students progressed to the Times University of the Year 2026, Durham University.
The impact of our academic stretch has reflected in our exceptional outcomes. Our 2025 A Level cohort celebrated record-breaking results, with 21.9% of grades awarded A* and 57.2% of grades between A and A*. With 9 out of 10 students attending a university ranked in the country’s top 30, building a research-backed, ambitious learning culture has helped Berkhamsted students to thrive.

“To me, innovation in education is about staying relevant, ambitious, and never losing sight of the real opportunities available to our young people once they leave school. I believe deeply in embracing new courses and contemporary learning pathways, because this is how we empower our pupils to discover their passions, develop transferable skills, and step confidently into their future.
In an increasingly corporate education landscape, I am proud that St Columba’s College remains a truly independent school. That independence gives us the flexibility to place academic success at the heart of our value-led ethos, to build a research-driven curriculum, and to prepare our students for the realities of modern life. It allows us to resist becoming a “carbon-copy” institution and instead offer something distinctive, purposeful, and genuinely student-centred.
I am equally committed to the College’s long-standing belief in holistic education. Our students benefit from a wide and balanced range of pathways, from the more traditional academic routes to Food Technology, Expressive Arts, i-Media, and e-Sports. At post-16, we offer both A-Levels and an expanding portfolio of

Alternative Academic Qualifications, including CTECS in Business and Sport and Physical Activity, ensuring that every learner can find a pathway that suits their strengths and aspirations.
Our success in introducing and building a coeducational community, combined with our strong pastoral care and academic results, means that St Columba’s is a place where childhood is protected, community is nurtured, and every student feels they belong. My aim is to ensure that our young people leave us happy, emotionally secure, confident, and equipped to succeed at every stage of their lives.
Our job isn’t about fitting our young people into a mould, rather about creating a new shape around each one of them and then celebrating what they become…in our case, Columbans. We know happy students make successful learners. You’re invited to book a private tour for our Prep, Senior and Sixth Form and discover everything our school has to offer. stcolumbascollege.org

In 2026, makeup has shifted away from heavy contour, sharp eyeliner, and overtly bold lips. The beauty world is embracing what experts are calling the blurred look, a soft-focus approach that enhances your features without masking them. Skin glows naturally, lips appear gently stained, and eyes are subtly defined without harsh edges. It is a look that feels editorial yet accessible, polished yet lived-in — perfect for London readers who appreciate elegance with an understated edge.
What sets this trend apart is its emphasis on natural texture. Heavy powders and overly matte foundations are replaced with lightweight, glowy formulas that allow skin to breathe. Cream blushes, tinted serums, and skin tints provide a soft luminosity while evening tone and enhancing features. The result is a complexion that feels effortless, healthy, and fresh, creating the ultimate “skin, just better” effect. Layering is intentional but subtle: cheeks, lips, and eyes are harmonised for cohesion without precision that feels staged or artificial.

Lips are central to the blurred look. Instead of sharply defined lines or bold matte finishes, makeup artists suggest soft washes of colour, applied with fingertips or a gentle brush. The goal is a natural, just-bitten effect that mirrors the appearance of real, lived-in lips. Cheeks echo these same tones for a harmonious, balanced look, while eyes are kept soft with neutral shadows

and minimal mascara. Even highlighter is applied sparingly — just enough to enhance contours without overpowering the natural glow.
Eyes, too, are softened. Instead of thick eyeliner or dramatic smokey effects, muted shadows in taupe, rose, and soft browns frame the eye naturally. Mascara enhances lashes subtly, emphasizing definition without stark separation. The overall effect is approachable yet polished, editorial but wearable — a look that transitions effortlessly from a casual coffee meeting to evening drinks or a photoshoot. This versatility is a major reason the trend is rapidly gaining traction in fashion capitals like London, where beauty often reflects understated sophistication.
The blurred look is also about technique. Fingertips, soft brushes, and sponges are preferred over rigid tools for diffusing edges and blending pigments seamlessly. Makeup is applied in layers, with each element lightly built to avoid harsh lines. Cream-based blushes and balms allow colour to melt into skin rather than sit on top, and lips are blurred and patted rather than lined. Highlighters and illuminators are strategically placed on high points — cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and brow bones — to enhance dimension without shimmer overload. The philosophy is simple: enhancement over perfection, subtlety over statement.
This movement reflects a wider cultural shift in luxury beauty, particularly relevant in London. Modern consumers value authenticity, versatility, and effortless elegance over highly constructed or dramatic looks. The blurred makeup trend allows wearers to embrace imperfection, while still appearing polished and stylish. For busy

professionals, fashion-conscious socialites, and beauty editors alike, it offers a day-to-night look that is both practical and photogenic. Social mediafriendly but not staged, it celebrates individuality and confidence in a way that feels attainable.
The trend’s rise has inspired brands to develop products specifically suited to the soft-focus aesthetic. From sheer lip oils to multi-use balms, lightweight foundations to luminous cream blushes, these tools make achieving the blurred look easy, even for those new to makeup. The focus is on products that blend effortlessly, layer seamlessly, and highlight natural radiance, all while allowing the wearer to personalize the look to their own features.
• Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil Sheer, hydrating colour for naturally stained lips.
• Glossier Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick Muted matte that blends seamlessly for a soft, diffused finish.
• Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation Lightweight, glowy base that allows natural texture to shine.
• RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Concealer/ Foundation Creamy, multi-use formula that blurs imperfections while maintaining radiance.
• Nudestix Gel Color Lip + Cheek Balm Versatile balm that adds soft washes of colour to lips and cheeks.
• Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push-Up Lashes Mascara Enhances lashes naturally without harsh separation.

Titled A Very VS Valentine’s, the campaign delivers a fresh, fashion-forward take on romance – blending playful nostalgia with modern femininity in a way that feels perfectly attuned to today’s luxury consumer.
Shot in soft, intimate settings, the visuals showcase Bieber in a curated edit of lingerie, sleepwear, and Valentine’s gifting pieces. Classic silhouettes are refreshed with heart motifs, lace detailing, and satin finishes, while the colour palette moves effortlessly between signature reds, blush pinks, and creamy neutrals. The result is a collection that feels both seductive and wearable –designed to be styled as confidently at home as it is layered into everyday wardrobes.
One standout moment nods to Victoria’s
Secret heritage, subtly referencing early-2000s campaign imagery while reworking it through a contemporary lens. Bieber’s relaxed confidence and understated glamour bring a sense of ease to the collection, reinforcing the brand’s continued evolution toward inclusivity and modern luxury.
Beyond lingerie, the Valentine’s offering extends into coordinating pyjamas, accessories, and fragrance mists, positioning the collection as a complete gifting destination. The campaign strikes a careful balance between fantasy and functionality – a key reason it resonates so strongly with fashion-savvy audiences.
For London readers, A Very VS Valentine’s reflects a wider shift in luxury fashion and beauty: romance without excess, sensuality without cliché. With its refined styling, iconic casting, and timeless appeal, Victoria’s Secret’s latest campaign proves that Valentine’s dressing can be both playful and polished – and that modern love, like modern style, is all about confidence. victoriassecret.co.uk

The unique shapes and patterns provided by the natural world are the building blocks of furniture favourites found in every home. Fibres become our fabrics, sand becomes our glass, and most importantly (to me, dear reader) the myriad of marbles and timbers form our tables, big and small. Is there anything more beautiful than a table topped with intricately veined Calacatta, or the rich grain of an oak surface? But how do you choose between the two? Both are embodiments of design majesty, albeit for very different reasons.
What belongs where – and why does it belong there? What are the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between these material giants? Welcome to a heavyweight title fight: Wood vs Marble.
The big picture: Marble is synonymous with opulence. The palaces of antiquity were shaped by it, and modern spaces are not so different. Today, however, the material is used more internally than externally. It can be used to create truly unique, one-of-a-kind tables, with veins that can be traced through a seemingly indestructible surface; a

kind of liquidity within the absolute. Meanwhile its wide variation of earthy finishes makes it a natural choice for countless settings: a master of standing out while fitting in. Marble is surprisingly versatile... for a rock.
On the other side, wood tables are the original. Picture Goldilocks and her porridge. Medieval dining halls. One thing in common: wood. Their desirability comes from natural warmth, the soothing patterns of the grain, and the familiarity of a timber dining table – something many of us grew up with at home.
Look and feel: The physical texture of both materials is solid, strong and supportive. Wood with its subtle, story-telling imperfections and natural tactility brings an instant sense of comfort to a room. Marble by contrast is cool to the touch not just to the eye.
It’s what these materials evoke that truly sets them apart. Wood’s organic character offers a welcoming charm as you enter a space, as if inviting you to take a seat at the table or set down your Earl Grey. Marble, on the other hand, is sleek and dynamic, perfectly suited to moments that call for something a little more eye-catching. Durability: “Solid as a rock,” as the old saying

goes, marble is one of nature’s most durable materials. Highly resistant to temperature changes and capable of withstanding a significant amount of force, standing strong against the thrills and spills of a busy household – unless, of course, you’re holding a glass of wine. Depending on whether it has been pre-sealed, marble is incredibly porous, readily absorbing certain liquids that can leave rings or stains. Coasters, therefore, are an absolute must when entertaining. Or drinking alone. We don’t judge.
Wood, while lacking the innate strength of marble, is far more forgiving if something does go wrong. Scratches and chips are considerably easier to repair and for many the natural wear and tear of everyday use develops something that looks better nowhere else than on timber: character.
Ethical Consumption: As with the manufacture and transportation of anything in the modern world, both marble and wood come with environmental drawbacks. Because both are naturally occurring commodities, we have to look a little deeper than usual. Marble is generally less ecologically impactful to manufacture, but it is non-renewable and—unlike trees—cannot be regrown (not unless you’re prepared to wait a few eons). As such, it must be cared for with absolute diligence to ensure longevity.
Wood, while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential.
The answer? Shop brands with clearly defined eco-policies – those that make a genuine, vested effort to leave the planet better for having been part of their process. Look for commitments

to tree replacement or CO2 reduction, and manufacturers that provide aftercare guidance to extend the lifespan of each piece. Brands such as Gubi and Audo are excellent examples of these principles in practice.
Maintenance: One of the more closely matched categories in this comparison: both materials require a certain level of TLC. To maintain the prestigious look they offer, it’s best to use pH-neutral cleaners that won’t damage delicate surfaces. As mentioned previously, sealed marble provides far greater protection from the thrills and spills of a busy household, however, care is more about prevention than cure. Coasters and mats are an essential accessory.
Wood, on the other hand, is more forgiving. Surface-level scratches can be sanded out, a leg can be replaced, and a fresh layer of finish can be applied breathing new life into what may one day be considered a family heirloom. We’d also recommend a weekly wipe-down and limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for certain timbers, helping to prevent bleaching over time. chaplins.co.uk

Ignite the fire inside with bold and passionate red this year.
“New year, new you - new colour, new mood? That rings true if you want to make a big statement this year with colour. Red as a colour trend is growing, and we predict it will continue to gain momentum as the year progresses. For anyone who wants to make a bold start to the year, this is the trend for you.
The psychology of red differs depending on the context. Often associated with passion, romance, and excitement, it can also convey feelings of danger or anger, like the term ‘seeing red’. When it comes to interiors, it’s not just timeless but also incredibly versatile. It can be used to warm up the living room, make the dining room feel more intimate or inject passion into the bedroom.
The ‘unexpected red theory’ trend can be traced back to the start of red’s surge in popularity. The trend, which originated from TikTok, involves adding a hint of red to enhance the room’s appearance. This can be through accessories like a red cushion on a neutral-coloured sofa or by introducing a red lamp to a neutral space.
For those who want to go all out with red on the walls, it’s about picking the right tone of red. Terracotta trends quite highly on Google with 1,300 searches for the term ‘terracotta paint colour’. It’s a great choice if you want to inject an earthy touch into the room, thanks to its reddishbrown undertone. Oxblood with 2,400 searches is the red tone to inject passion, sophistication and warmth into the room. It works particularly well if you have wall-panelling as it highlights the depth of the walls. Burgundy, with 5,400 searches, has a cooler undertone compared to oxblood and is reminiscent of red wine.
Red’s fiery and bold presence allows it to complement or contrast different textures. Velvet or plush fabric upholstery, wall panelling, textured

wallpaper, and lacquered tiling are many ways red textures can be introduced into your home. Meanwhile, metallic textures like vases, lamps or coffee tables provide a stylish contrast and brighten up the room.
Besides textures, mixing and matching red with other colours creates a layered look. Pairing red with earth tones like light brown wood tones, light greys and indoor greenery helps soften the room and create a calming anchor. The colour-drenching trend shows no signs of going away, and layering the room with different tones of red creates a chic and sophisticated look. Burgundy walls and a burnt orange sofa create a striking effect with their fiery spirit, which lights up the room.” furniturechoice.co.uk

Linwood champions a new era of tactile, emotionally resonant design in British interiors

Luxury in interiors is changing. Sleek surfaces and pared-back minimalism are giving way to something richer, warmer and more human: texture.
As homeowners seek spaces that feel nurturing and restorative, tactile fabrics – from softly slubbed linens to plush velvets and expressive embroideries – are becoming the defining feature of contemporary British homes.
At the forefront of this movement is Linwood, whose latest collections celebrate the power of touch to transform how a room feels. From the richly woven Tango Weaves, produced in Italy by a family-run mill, to the brand’s renowned Omega IV velvets, sustainably finished and inherently flame-retardant, and designed not just to be seen, but to be experienced.
This philosophy is evident across Linwood’s collections. Orta, a relaxed linen blend, delivers a naturally tactile base for upholstery and curtains, while Titania brings a softer layer of artistry, with hand-drawn designs created in Linwood’s Hampshire studio and translated into embroidery on pure linen and linen-cotton grounds.
The effect is sensory and quietly luxurious. Rather than dominating a space, these fabrics work together to create interiors that feel lived-in, personal and effortlessly elegant – a hallmark of modern British design.
As the industry moves towards more

“Orta, a relaxed linen blend, delivers a naturally tactile base for upholstery and curtains”

thoughtful, layered interiors, Linwood continues to set the pace, delivering fabrics that balance craftsmanship, innovation and timeless appeal. Texture, it seems, is no longer a detail – it is the design story.

Juliettes Interiors reveals their top five luxury lighting trends illuminating high end homes into 2026.
From the opulence of art deco, to crafting something totally bespoke, 2026 lighting trends are all about elevating your interiors through personality and personalisation.
“2026 is all about utilising lighting as art.” says Juliette Thomas, Founder and Creative Director of Juliettes Interiors.
Whether you prefer an organic feel or want something bright and colourful, here are the top trends that’ll be lighting up luxury homes in 2026.
Create Cohesion with Multiplicity Lighting
Continuity creates calm, and multiplicity lighting is an increasingly popular way to achieve it in luxury interiors. By choosing a coordinated “family” of pieces (from statement chandeliers and pendants to wall lights, floor and table lamps), you create an effortlessly consistent look across the home, refined and considered, but not overtly coordinated. Multiplicity lighting is particularly effective in large properties, where connecting spaces is essential to creating a sense of flow. “Multiplicity lighting is one of the simplest ways to make a home feel immediately considered,” says Juliette. “When your lighting speaks the same design language throughout, it creates that quiet confidence you only get with truly luxurious interiors.”
Bring the Outdoors In With Biophilic Lighting
Biophilic lighting connects us to the outdoors through organic shaped fixtures featuring calming

elements of the natural world, including waterfalls, woodland designs and cloud formations. “As our lifestyles increasingly revolve around harsh artificial lighting and screens, we’re seeing natureinspired designs continue growing in popularity,” says Juliette. These lighting options nurture wellbeing, boost mood and transform a home into a sanctuary, promoting relaxation and restoration.
Embrace Your Uniqueness With Sculptural Fixtures
Many of Juliette’s clients are breaking free of the lighting-above-furniture formula, instead opting for a truly unique look by suspending lighting from quirky angles. From asymmetrical wall clusters, to a constellation-like scattering of lights across the ceiling, sculptural lighting illuminates a room with movement and character.
Art Deco Elegance, a Century On Art deco has made a resurgence, with modern takes – or neo deco – combining the glamour of the 1920s with a contemporary twist worthy of

“Many of Juliette’s clients are breaking free of the lightingabove-furniture formula, instead opting for a truly unique look by suspending lighting from quirky angles.”

the 2026. “Modern art deco style takes a slightly quieter approach to what has traditionally been a flamboyant trend,” explains Juliette. “But you can still expect geometric shapes, asymmetrical patterns and opulent pops of gold and crystal.” Art deco influence can be found across all luxury lighting options - from table lamps, through wall sconces, up to grand chandeliers - its timeless elegance lighting a room and elevating luxury interiors.
According to Juliettes, colour accenting is no longer reserved for accessories like cushions, throws and ornamental vases, as they’re increasingly being asked to incorporate colour through lighting. Modern lighting trends are moving beyond the realms of white, cream and grey, stretching into every corner of the colour wheel. From the warmth of yellows and oranges, to the fresh feel of greens and blues, 2026 is the year to use coloured lighting to inject personality.
In 2026, we’re ripping up the texture rulebook, and luxury interiors are embracing a more expressive approach to mixing materials. By pairing contrasting materials across furniture, accessories and lighting, we create richer, more dimensional spaces. From glass and metal to stone, leather and wood, these combinations add instant character and a sense of layered sophistication.
As clients become increasingly keen to highlight their own creativity in their interiors, personalised and bespoke furnishings are growing in popularity. Bespoke lighting is becoming ever more popular with luxury home owners wanting something

unqiue. “A bespoke luxury lighting gives premium personalisation with expert execution,” says Juliette. “At Juliettes Interiors, all of our items are customisable, so we can alter the size, shape, colour or finish of a piece to suit your space.”
Some of Juliette’s clients are letting their artistic expression run completely free by designing bespoke lighting, something totally original. Using innovative AI technology to visualise a client’s dream concept, the brand then ensures the end design can be accurately brought to life by skilled artisans.

The perfect lighting can transform the look and feel of a home and effortlessly complement your interiors, taste and design needs. Whether you’re looking to refresh your space with stylish fixtures, or are on the hunt for a one-ofa-kind installation, the expert team at Juliettes Interiors have over 20 years of interior design experience and would love to support you with your next project.

There’s a quiet shift happening in UK homes. We’re moving away from the disposable, the overly uniform, the forgettable and returning to pieces that feel intentional. Furniture that holds presence. Design that has a point of view. And interiors that reflect how we want to live now: slower, calmer, and more connected to nature.
At William Wood, this is exactly where we sit. Known for statement mirrors and luxury furniture, William Wood has become a go-to for those who want their spaces to feel elevated without feeling untouchable. It’s a brand that understands the modern home isn’t just somewhere you live, it’s somewhere you retreat, reset, host, create, and sometimes simply exhale. Each piece is designed to add impact, while still feeling timeless enough to live with for years.
The brand’s signature lies in balancing bold design with a refined aesthetic: sculptural forms, rich textures, and a careful attention to proportion. Mirrors remain at the heart of the collection, from oversized, architectural designs that bring instant drama to a space, to softly curved silhouettes that add light and calm. But William Wood has evolved far beyond mirrors alone, with furniture

collections that allow customers to build a home with continuity, character, and intent.
Recent launches have leaned into this evolution. New arrivals have introduced more experimental shapes and finishes, wavy edges, irregular curves, organic lines - a clear nod to a future where interiors are less rigid and more expressive. The result is a collection that feels current, but never trend-chasing: pieces that make a statement without shouting.
This year, William Wood is also placing a renewed focus on one of the most influential design movements emerging across interiors: biophilic design.
More than a buzzword, biophilic design reflects a growing desire to reconnect with the natural world through our spaces - especially in cities like London, where the pace is fast and the outside world can feel relentless. It’s about more than adding plants to a room. It’s the use of natural textures, soft light, organic shapes, grounding tones, and materials that create a sensory calm. Think rippled wood grains, stone-inspired finishes, earthy palettes, and silhouettes that mimic nature rather than straight lines.
William Wood’s approach to biophilic design is rooted in craftsmanship and mood. A side table with a fluid, wave-like edge. A coffee table with a softened form that feels carved rather than manufactured. A mirror that echoes the shape of water or a landscape horizon. These are pieces designed not just to fill a space, but to change how

it feels to be in it.
The brand’s latest push is also driven by how people are shopping and styling now. Customers are curating “moments” within their home - a reading nook, a hallway statement, a softly lit corner that feels like an escape and William Wood designs with those scenes in mind. It’s the art of turning everyday living into something more considered.
Ultimately, William Wood stands for modern luxury that doesn’t feel cold. For design that makes an impression, but still invites you in. And for homes that reflect not just personal style, but personal wellbeing.
Because the future of interiors isn’t just about what looks good - it’s about what makes us feel good, too.

Luxury bathroom brand Aquaroc is encouraging couples to think beyond the cliched gifts this Valentine’s Day, and invest in a truly thoughtful gift: a double bathroom that balances romance with every day practicality.
According to Aquaroc, creating a bathroom for two isn’t about doubling up fixtures, but designing a room that supports shared living while allowing each person their own space.
Mark Tones, Founder of Aquaroc, said: “Designing a bathroom for two is all about the balance between independent function and shared style.
“It’s about creating a space that is calm, efficient and tailored to both users.”
Two basins allow both partners to get ready at the same time without friction. Aquaroc’s Savoy Double Vanity Unit is designed with this in mind, offering dual sinks, generous storage and a timeless aesthetic that works beautifully in both contemporary and classic schemes.
Mark said: “Two basins provide independence in the morning rush, while well-planned storage keeps the space feeling calm and clutter-free.”
Storage plays a crucial role in maintaining harmony. Deep drawers with internal dividers allow toiletries to be organised discreetly, keeping countertops clear and the room serene. Equally important are mirrors and lighting positioned for simultaneous use.
And even in smaller bathrooms, smart design choices mean a double bathroom is still possible.

Wall-mounted or softly curved vanities help improve flow and make a room feel larger, while pairing a double vanity with a freestanding doubleended bath creates a statement focal point that elevates the space.
“To maximise space, look for symmetry and softened forms,” Mark added. “The Savoy’s curved edges enhance accessibility and flow, while its fluted wood grain finish brings warmth and natural texture that feels indulgent but easy to live with.”
When designing a bathroom for two, Aquaroc advises avoiding overly complex layouts or trendled finishes that date quickly. Instead, a wellconsidered double vanity, ample concealed storage and a balanced layout can transform the bathroom into a daily retreat.
Mark added: “Designing a bathroom for two is all about balance: dual function, double storage and shared style.
“Get it right, and it becomes a gift that improves everyday life long after Valentine’s Day has passed.”

Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2026 is set to make a quiet but powerful impact in the home, and according to the experts at independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore, nowhere will the calming influence of Cloud Dancer be felt more than in the bathroom.
As homeowners increasingly look to create spa-like spaces that support rest and wellbeing, this soft, airy off-white offers the perfect foundation.
Unlike stark whites or cold greys, Cloud Dancer sits in a warmer, gentler place.
It reflects light beautifully while still feeling cocooning, making it particularly well suited to bathrooms, where calmness and serenity are key.
Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director, Porcelain Superstore, said: “Bathrooms are no longer just functional spaces, they’ve become places to switch off and Cloud Dancer speaks directly into that mindset.
“It is soft, reassuring and timeless, which makes it ideal for bathrooms where you want to create a sense of calm without the space feeling bland or clinical.”
For those homeowners embarking on a bathroom renovation this new year, Abbas feels Cloud Dancer is a great inspiration when it comes

to tile selection.
Not only will its creamy off-white hues help smaller bathrooms feel more open, but in larger spaces tiles in Cloud Dancer-esque shades will provide a serene backdrop that lets textures and finishes shine.
Abbas added: “Cloud Dancer is incredibly versatile. It works just as well with natural materials like wood and stone as it does with more contemporary finishes such as brushed brass or matt black brassware.
“It also complements a wealth of colours, from pastel shades through to bolder hues, for those homeowners who want to add contrast and interest through accessories.”
For those keen to embrace the trend fully, Abbas recommends layering similar tones rather than matching everything exactly. Soft beige or offwhite wall tiles, lightly veined floor tiles and tonal grout can all help create a seamless, relaxing feel.
Porcelain Superstore offers a wide range of tiles in creamy off-white shades, including Heath White and Nomad Chalk.
