Recently named ‘Best Place to Live in the UK’ from The Times, Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town, in north-west Essex. It has a rich heritage of old buildings, and an award-winning market has been held here since 1141. Market days are now Tuesdays and Saturdays. Close to the centre, Saffron Walden Museum is of particular interest. The collections are housed in one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the country, completed in 1835. It has everything from mammoth tusks to mummies, from an early Tudor bed to a natural history museum gallery. In the grounds of the museum are the ruins of the Castle keep which dates to the 1130s or 40s. This summer, on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June, over 100 talented craftspeople and skilled artisans will be showcasing their handmade products at the biggest craft show in the county - The Essex County Craft Show 2025. This fantastic event is taking place within the beautiful grounds of Ingatestone Hall, nestled between Chelmsford and Brentwood The Colchester Castle Summer Series is set to make a grand debut, bringing an unforgettable openair concert experience to one of England’s most historic venues. With a stellar lineup of global icons spanning rock, pop, R&B, and reggae, this promises to be the biggest live music event in Colchester this summer. Pain-staking efforts have replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s. The attractive Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces and on its eastern side is the

itting in the very heart of the ancient Epping Forest, lies the surprising “Oyster Shack & Seafood Bar”, nestled besides the majestic Kings Oak pub. It’s not very often you would expect to find a seafood stall, located deep in the forest, particularly one of such quality, but we’re rather glad we did! The shack is now in its 6th year of trading has struck up quite a reputation amongst the West Essex locals, dog walkers and even drawing an inner London crowd, who are venturing out from suburbia for a day in the woods centred around a fishy feast. Oyster Shack & Seafood Bar itself is an open kitchen, with a daily display counter full of fresh offerings to tempt you with. Serving a selection of the finest oysters from around the British Isles, along with all the usual local seafood you would expect find at a seafood stall, they also offer a delicious hot food, tapas style menu and a list of fresh daily specials. Tucking into a very tasty bacon and scallop roll, we sat back and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of this buzzing little eatery. Enough to cater for 50 guests under cover, with the addition of a sun terrace with further seating we could understand why this has become such a popular hidden gem. With a cafe next door serving chips and soft drinks and a pub serving alcohol, looking out across an incredible view it seems they have all aspects covered. We spoke to several members of this very friendly team who introduced us to Steve Cook, a local restauranteur who runs the Oyster Shack. He explained how things have developed from the

start, with daily early morning trips to Billingsgate Fish Market. “My day starts at 4am with a drive to the market and load up with a nice selection of the freshest fish and seafood we could find. It’s always exciting up there, and great for a chef to have such an array of produce to chose from. Our aim was always to keep things as local as possible, but as fresh as could be. If the seafood and fish is of quality, that’s most of our work done.” After a year or two of early starts and long days he was lucky enough to meet Maurice. “I text him every night now with my order, and he delivers the following morning. He has become my eyes and nose for the market. Working at the very centre of the market himself for years, he knows exactly what’s coming in from the boats and what’s available. He’s invaluable to us and instrumental in our quality. Thank you Mo!” Steve added “it’s great to have such direct contact and feedback from our guests. Some of our clients have become real friends, and I’m very lucky to have acquired such a dedicated great team of professionals working with me. It’s really satisfying and has been great fun” If seafood and oysters are your thing, then this little secret shack should surely be on your radar if you haven’t already joined the weekend queues. here’s a moment, maybe an hour or two after the boat leaves the dock, when the world you left behind begins to blur. The sounds of the city, the hum of traffic, the endless to-do list—they all start to fade as the engine hums steadily beneath your feet and the horizon stretches wide and blue before you. That’s the magic of a private boat charter. It’s not just about being on the water—it’s about the space it creates between you and everything else. Our charter began on a sunlit morning at the marina. The boat, a sleek 40-foot Bavaria Sport, looked like something pulled from a dream—polished teak, stainless steel, plush seats, sundecks and comfy cushions, and a crew who greeted us with easy smiles and chilled champagne. There’s a quiet kind of luxury in stepping aboard something that’s been prepared just for you. No waiting, no crowds, no schedules—just the ocean, the wind, and a full day ahead. Once we pushed off from the marina, the mood shifted. The land slipped away behind us, and the gentle rocking of the boat quickly replaced the mental noise most of us carry. Some of us sprawled on the sun deck, skin warming under the rising sun, while others made their way to the bow, faces turned into the breeze, eyes scanning the water for elusive Dorset dolphins. There was laughter, yes, and music playing softly through the boat’s speakers—but there was also a reverent silence that settled over us now and then. As if we all instinctively understood we were somewhere special. Our captain, Gary, charted a course that took us to Pottery Pier. As the boat anchored and the engine quieted, we prepared ourselves for the arrival of our Jet Skis and instructor for the day, something we had been excitedly waiting for. We floated lazily on paddleboards or simply drifted, eyes closed, letting the salt and sun do their healing work. Lunch was served on deck—a grazing platter of savoury delights and the show stopping sea food platter. It was the kind of meal that tastes better simply because of where you’re eating it—surrounded by sea and sky, salt on your lips, bare feet brushing against the warm wood of the deck. We ate slowly, letting the day unfold in no particular hurry. One of the revelations of a boat charter is the way it recalibrates time. The hours don’t tick by the same way they do on land. There’s no rush, no itinerary to chase. Just the gentle pull of the tide and the promise of what’s around the next bend in the coastline. We cruised past rocky cliffs and hidden beaches, sometimes stopping just to float, sometimes leaping into the water again, just because we could.
As the sun began to tilt toward late afternoon, golden light spilled across the water. The boat turned back toward the marina, but no one seemed eager to reach land. The breeze had cooled slightly, and someone passed around blankets as we lounged on the deck, watching the sky melt into soft oranges and pinks. Conversations grew quieter. Phones stayed in bags. No one was documenting, posting, or checking in. The only thing that mattered was the present. By the time we returned to the dock, the day had done something to us. We stepped off the boat salt-haired, sun-kissed, and somehow lighter. Whatever we’d carried aboard—stress, fatigue, deadlines— had been rinsed away by the sea. elmscott Manor was the iconic country home of William Morris; poet, designer, craftsman, socialist and founding father of the Arts and Crafts movement. Today, visitors will find an outstanding collection. The Manor has so many intriguing stories to tell; its collections span over 300 years and reflect the lives, ideas, and creative legacy of those who lived and stayed there. Perhaps the most famous, is the portrait of Jane Morris by Rossetti, The Blue Silk Dress, which was completed in 1868 and is currently hanging in the White Room. very student is different and every student should feel empowered to shape their future! Each and everyone of us is different; this sentence is not rocket science and shouldn’t surprise anyone. Yet when it comes to pathways beyond school, students often seem to think that they should all go off and do the same thing. Sixth Form to me is about students discovering their passion, developing that interest and exploring the different experiences that can help them fly as individuals beyond school. Whilst schools are restricted by the exam specifications, it is also imperative that schools provide experiences, opportunities and education that reaches beyond the confines of a traditional classroom environment. At RMS we offer students the opportunity to chair boardroom meetings with people from industry, teachers

and like minded students, discussing topics such as ‘Does AI have a place in the world of education?’ and ‘Can food supply ever be globally sustainable?’. Students have ‘Futures’ lessons, covering topics from creating a LinkedIn profile, to women’s health, to disagreeing well. Each week there is ‘Flexitime’ as part of the curriculum where students might have Prefect team meetings, be mentoring younger students, meeting to discuss Oxbridge or Medical applications, attending workshops on US university or degree apprenticeship applications or working individually on ‘going beyond’ tasks to help them explore their subjects beyond the curriculum. Often schools measure their success through A Level exam results; whilst this is always a nice accolade for any school, to me it is the individual stories of success that we see through each student’s journey beyond school which is the real measure of success. Last year alone we had students going to over 30 different UK universities to study over 30 different courses, we had students going to top art and textiles colleges, music conservatoires, the USA and the Netherlands, degree apprenticeships at the likes of Amazon and KPMG and also some taking GAP years or going straight into the world of work. These outcomes highlight their individual sense of empowerment. Ultimately what RMS does so well, is create a personalised approach to the curriculum. went to prep school in London a long time ago and still have extremely fond memories of my time there. Most of my memories are academic, as that was the focus of prep school life back then. It was classic learning for the love of learning—something that really appealed to me. I was never under pressure about senior school entrance exams, and I never associated prep school with stress. I doubt my parents did either. Sadly, those days feel long gone. PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

The words cool and casual had become synonymous with Beckham’s effortless style, and the football star’s jeans and a white-T became the go-to off-duty ensemble for celebrities across the board. Pared with some Ray-Ban aviators – the trending sunglasses shape of the 2010s – Beckham became the pinnacle of male style inspiration. On chillier days, the star sported double breasted jackets and striped scarves, still, of course, in a neutral palette.

In 2012, Beckham’s style became more pared back – literally, in some cases – as the ex-footballer collaborated with H&M on a bodywear collection featuring cotton trunks and tight vests. To the launch however, Beckham layered up in a cream knitted cardigan and drainpipe jeans. In 2017 Beckham started to dabble in a more countryfied aesthetic, sporting heritage tweed, brown suede and forest green on public appearances. It seems Beckham was channelling the surroundings of his new Cotswolds estate, that he and Victoria bought in 2016 for a reported £12 million. The family began splitting their time between Chipping Norton and their Holland Park townhouse in London, as Beckham became more interested in farming, hikes and country living.

The ‘quiet luxury’ trend kicked off in 2020 and seems to have infiltrated everybody’s wardrobe – and David Beckham’s is no exception. His smarter looks have started to lean more into traditional tailoring; opting for double breasted suit jackets over more modern sports coats. Indulging in pocket squares and pinstripes, Beckham’s style now juxtaposes the rugged countenance he became known for, often covering his tattoos with longer sleeves. Beckham’s smart style coincided with him becoming the face of Hugo Boss in May 2024. It was a somewhat unsurprising collaboration, as the sports star is no stranger to the world of fashion, having previously collaborated on collections with H&M and Kent & Curwen. ormerly the Assisted Conception Unit, The Fertility Centre is a longstanding centre of excellence for fertility treatment and care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. he design playground of the 2025 Salone del Mobile furniture and design fair, and the evergrowing Milan Design Week that blossoms around it, saw the city once more basking in interiors innovations, pioneering product design, and shifting perspectives on space. The ambiance was mindful, subdued, even tentative, chiming with the fair’s theme of ‘Thought for Humans,’ which honed in on the power of design to support wellness and bring people together. Neutrals and naturals reigned, with luxury design brands from around the world leaning into an organic palette and the materials of nature as well as carefully refining and extending their current collections, plus mixing in a few surprises along the way. Exploring Milan Design Week 2025, our eyes adjusted to a spectrum that’s been simmering in the background for a while but came into full bloom this year. Neutrals. Everywhere. TEXTURED GLASS:
It’s the time of misted and molten glass. Misted glass has a frosted or opaque finish, so light passing through it is diffused, creating a soft, less defined glow. Molten glass is filled with ripples and movement, like it’s not quite set yet (perhaps having oozed from the earth or poured forth from a volcano), most often transparent but distorting light that does pass through. Both approaches feel organic,
yet toy with shadow, skewing it for a floaty, ethereal, am-I-awake effect.
LACQUERED LUXE:
If you want even, uninterrupted, slickest of the slick surfaces, it’s lacquer you’ll be turning to this interiors season. Becoming more and more apparent on the decorative scene of late, it’s now glided right into the spotlight. Its silky finish negating the need for bold statement colour, the high-gloss finish itself is the main attraction as light bounces dramatically from its look-over-here polished coat. The contemporary lacquered pieces combine the traditional finish with clean, minimalist forms that hint at the sculptural with the simple shapes enhanced by impactful lustre.

While we’re talking of folds, the influence of the king of undulating layers echoed through time this year, making his presence known across a range of brands and designs. Remember… the Michelin man? In need of the most brilliant shine and most uninterrupted sheen of them all? You’re in luck, as the metallic of 2025 is a silver-toned, chrome-y, mirror-like reflection. No longer just a throwback to retro futurism or a subtle accent, it’s now fully dominating the scene with its liquid silver-style surface turning furniture and beyond into statements that radiate high-voltage polish. Colour? We’ve all but forgotten what it is at this point as light zips across chrome’s surface, catching every curve, edge and angle with assertive precision that feels fresh, refined and fearless.
FOLDED FORMS:
We’re welcoming into the fold pieces that exhibit textural tucks; those that show off how they’re artfully shaped and gathered into being. Furniture using its very construction and structure as decoration, and as a leading part of its personality. The move creates visual rhythm through pinches and pleats, and brings softness to hard materials. rom the elegant terraces of Mayfair to the artistic enclaves of Notting Hill, the most fashionable windows in London have one thing in common: they are dressed by Pat Giddens, leading curtain-maker behind some of the most exquisite interiors in Britain – and one of London’s best kept secrets. Over 100 years on from the first Giddens’s drapery, Pat now sits at the head of the business, combining impeccable heritage with contemporary style and flair. “I was weaned on a diet of curtains and upholstery” says Pat, whose father Maurice built up the business from his workshop in Lincoln. As his reputation grew, so did demand among London’s rich and famous. One project in particular—a tented room with a copy of the Chinese Chippendale bed at the V&A, complete with cast resin dragons—would propel the business into an entirely new world. “It was at a party on this country estate where Maurice was noticed by celebrities, music producers, performers not to mention European royalty. Spending time in Green Space
T
he garden is an important part of the any home fortunate enough to have one. Traditionally the transition between the inside and rear garden was marked by utilitarian structures like outdoor toilets or garden sheds. However, most modern homeowners are keen to improve this relationship and blur the threshold between the house and garden. Research has shown that spending time in green space or bringing plants and greenery into your everyday life can benefit both your mental health and physical wellbeing. We approach our design work holistically and consider both the garden and house from the beginning of our process. We often consider the outdoor space to be an additional room to the house that has the potential to be better inhabited. At our Walled Garden project we designed a garden that would be beautiful to look at but would also define ‘moments’ within it. We proposed lush foliage, ornamental grasses and ferns that could withstand the South facing aspect and equally thrive in the dappled light beneath the canopies of established trees beyond

the property. Within this garden space, two different seating areas are defined; one level with the internal living room and can be used as a public space for entertaining and another further back, more private. These are separated by a wildlife pond and path interwoven within the planting, creating moments for pause and contemplation. We proposed a new dining space at our Suppertime project which was conceived as a ‘thread’ connecting the various spaces through which it passes. The concept echoes a ‘street party’ style of dining, where the table shifts and extends when needed, rather than being defined by a dedicated dining ‘room’. This hard working new addition allows the family to be flexible with supper clubs spilling into the kitchen and the garden when extra space is needed. At our studio we are in the unique position to offer both architectural services and garden design. We work together with our clients to provide planting lists that include year round interest and develop maintenance plans. WE CAUGHT UP WITH ED SPICE WHO HEADS UP THE DEPARTMENT TO FIND OUT MORE. LM – Hi Ed – thanks for meeting with us- tell us a little about Barred. Ed – Good to meet you. Put simply, we make bespoke bars – primarily for private homes. I work closely with each customer to design a bar tailored to their specific needs and style. Every project is unique.
LM – Is most your work in London? Ed – We actually work all over the country. We build most elements off-site, which keeps disruption to a minimum during installation. Being based in Fleet, just off the M3, we’re well placed to serve London and the Home Counties, but we also travel further afield.
LM – How did this come about? Ed – It all started during lockdown. A friend and I began building bars because, well, everyone was drinking at home! I’ve spent 20 years running pubs, so I wanted to bring that experience into creating domestic bars that felt authentic and functional. By 2024, I brought Barred into Timber Technology to scale up and deliver at a higher level. Now, with our skilled team and facilities, we can work with any material to build almost anything. It all comes down to the client’s vision—and whether the budget matches their ambition.
LM – Have you got any advice for our readers? Ed – Definitely! Pinterest is a fantastic resource for inspiration. LM – How long does your process take? Ed – On average, it’s about four months from the initial consultation to final installation. That timeline can vary depending on how quickly we arrive at a design and how complex the build is.
LM – Budget- always a difficult question? Ed – Haha, yes, always! We are at the high end of the market, building pieces that are as much furniture as they are functional bars. Think of it like a bespoke kitchen, the materials are often similar, but bars can be a little more fun, with lighting, mirrors and custom features. WE TRANSFORMED THIS CUSTOMER’S CELLAR INTO A BESPOKE WINE STORAGE AND TASTING ROOM. WALNUT VENEER WAS USED FOR ALL THE JOINERY TO CREATE THIS STUNNING FEATURE ROOM.
