After 20 years, artist Lisa Wade returns to exhibit at Upminster Library this July. Her work explores local landmarks and iconic structures, from the Chernobyl Ferris Wheel to Brighton’s West Pier, alongside landscapes of places such as Whitstable and Leigh-on-Sea. SUMMER HAS ARRIVED AT QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK

ART, MUSIC AND CULTURE

The opening of V&A East Museum in April 2026 marked a major cultural milestone for East Bank and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Created with young people and rooted in east London’s heritage, the museum explores what is shaping our world through the voices leading contemporary culture today. Entry to the museum is free, making it open and accessible for all visitors.

Open daily from 10:00–18:00, and until 22:00 on Thursdays and Saturdays, the museum also offers ticketed exhibitions including The Music is Black: A British Story, celebrating Black British music and cultural influence. Inside the museum, visitors can also experience Café Jikoni, a kitchen without borders inspired by immigrant food traditions and flavours from South Asia, the Far East, the Middle East, East Africa and Britain.

East Bank continues to bring together culture and education with a year-round programme of events led by partners including V&A

East, BBC Music Studios, UAL’s London College of Fashion, Sadler’s Wells East and UCL. A key highlight is The Music is Black Festival from East Bank, an eight-month celebration of sound, culture and community, featuring four summer weekends of live music and performance across the Park: 13–14 June; 11–12 July; 22–23 August; 12–13 September.

Inspired by the opening exhibition at V&A East Museum, the festival includes music, exhibitions, talks, screenings, dance and digital content, showcasing the richness of Black British creativity and culture.

For those looking to get creative, rooftop abstract painting workshops return at Barge East. Led by artist Dan Whiteson, these monthly sessions run throughout the summer from 19 May to 8 August and are open to all levels, from complete beginners to experienced creatives.

FOOD

Wing Fest returns to London Stadium from 25–27 July, bringing the world’s largest chicken wing festival to Stratford with over 45 street food traders and restaurants competing for the UK’s best wings.

Black Eats Festival also returns across multiple weekends, celebrating Black food culture, entrepreneurship and creativity with street food traders, independent chefs and community businesses showcasing global flavours on the following weekends: 29 - 31 May; 7 - 9 August and 3 - 4 October

SPORTS

Bola Beach Tennis returns for the summer. Running for seven weeks, it brings together a mix of tennis, badminton, padel and volleyball played on sand courts. Sessions run Thursday to Sunday from 10:00–20:00, offering an energetic and social way to enjoy sport in the sun.

Major sporting moments also return to London Stadium, including Soccer Aid 2026, bringing celebrities and sporting stars together for a charity match in support of UNICEF.

Millfield Theatre has officially reopened following a major refurbishment, marking the beginning of a bold new era under the leadership of Platinum Performing Arts, who stepped in to invest in and secure the future of the theatre at a time when venues across the country were facing closure.

The reopening celebrates the completion of Phase One of the theatre’s transformation, alongside 20 years of Platinum’s work in the community and the launch of Power 2 Make A Change: Next Generation honouring the past, celebrating the present, and investing in the future.

The evening was marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Broadway and West End star Marisha Wallace, officially welcoming audiences back to the “Home of Entertainment in North London.” The event brought together community leaders, industry professionals, and artists whose journeys reflect both the theatre’s legacy and its renewed ambition. Guests arrived along the signature teal carpet, setting the tone for a night of celebration.

Audiences were treated to a powerful live performance by Platinum Performing Arts, Power 2 Make A Change, showcasing the exceptional talent nurtured through Platinum’s school, college,

and grassroots community programmes, and reinforcing the theatre’s commitment to cultural enrichment and youth voice.

Phase One improvements include reupholstered auditorium seating, new carpets, refreshed backstage areas, upgraded front of house spaces and upgraded lighting all delivered through an ambitious four-week makeover. A newly introduced Wall of Fame honours the many stars who have graced Millfield’s stage over the decades, alongside West End performers and industry professionals who began their journeys through Platinum.

Looking ahead, Millfield Theatre, under Platinum’s leadership, will present an exciting programme of professional productions, welcoming high quality theatre, live music, dance, and touring shows back to the stage. Alongside community and youth led work, the theatre will host spectacular professional performances, inviting audiences to support their local theatre and enjoy inspiring, affordable cultural experiences in the heart of North London.

Louise Dennis FGA DGA and Alicia Rogers have worked together for over sixteen years and together have a built a portfolio of sales regularly achieving outstanding results.

Head of the Jewellery Department since 2015, Louise has overseen the sale of many exceptional pieces, including a pair of Art Deco diamond earrings by Cartier that achieved a hammer price of £72,000, pictured above. Prior to Mallams, Louise worked for Bonhams and received several awards during her studies with the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, including the prestigious Christie’s Prize for Gemmology.

Alicia is Head of the Silver and Objets de Vertu at Mallams, and has over three decades of experience, having previously worked for internationally renowned firms including Phillips and Bonhams. Alicia is widely respected for her specialist knowledge, experience and trusted advice.

The most recent addition to the Jewellery Department is Specialist and Auctioneer, Jessie Edmonds FGA DGA. Jessie combines a

What should the final years of school be for? Examination preparation? Certainly. Securing a place at the university course of your choice? Undoubtedly. The breadth of opportunities is striking. With more than 32 post 16 courses on offer, pupils encounter an academic choice more commonly associated with university. Structured teaching and independent research are complemented by over 100 clubs and societies, each organising events and lectures throughout the year. More than 650 music lessons are delivered each week by over 50 specialist teachers, while 25 ensembles rehearse regularly. Last year, 18 productions were staged in the purpose built Malthouse Theatre, and pupils could choose from over 20 sports, including cricket, fencing, rowing and sailing.

Pupils also benefit from the King’s Oxbridge Plus seminars, combining academic stretch with lively small group discussion, alongside personalised guidance from the Futures Team. The diversity of our city campus further reinforces this open intellectual culture. Each year group includes more than 200 pupils, around 70 joining from other schools and representing 39 nationalities.

Perhaps that is what Michael Morpurgo meant by a “university for young people”: not a place that guides pupils down a narrow academic path, but one that gives them the knowledge, freedom and perspectives to discover what they want to become.

Since joining Talbot Heath as Head in Easter 2026, I have been struck by the warmth, ambition and sense of purpose that defines this remarkable school. Relocating from Cambridgeshire to take on this role was a significant decision for my family and I, but it has quickly become clear that Talbot Heath is a very special community with an exciting future ahead.

As the school recently celebrated its 140th anniversary, I have enjoyed learning more about its proud heritage. For generations, Talbot Heath has combined academic excellence with outstanding pastoral care, helping young people develop not only the knowledge and skills to succeed, but also the character, confidence and resilience needed to thrive in an ever changing world. Those values remain just as relevant today as they were when the school was founded.

In my short time here, one of the greatest pleasures has been meeting families from across the school through my regular Coffee & Catch Up sessions and attending a variety of events. I firmly believe that a Head should be visible, approachable and accessible. Taking the time to listen to parents, hear their perspectives and get to know the families who entrust us with their children’s education is incredibly important. For a long time, 13+ prep schools have offered a distinctive pathway bridging the gap between a traditional primary model and senior school education. This model gives children additional time to develop, with many schools preparing pupils in Years 7 and 8 for Common Entrance examinations,

often to boarding schools.

By contrast, London prep schools have, in the main, long offered dual pathways that give families genuine choice at both 11+ and 13+. This reflects a simple principle: the right next step should be determined by the needs of the child, not the structure of the school.

For parents, this naturally raises important questions. Is a London day school the right destination? Does location matter most? Would a hybrid model or flexi boarding better suit their child? Or would an additional two years in a prep environment allow greater confidence and maturity to develop?

These are the right questions to ask. Children change over time, and it is essential that families and schools continue to reflect on what will best support each individual at each stage of their journey.

At Broomwood Prep, we have always prepared pupils for both 11+ and 13+ entry,

and we believe this flexibility is central to our commitment to the whole child. It ensures that ambition is matched with understanding, and that success is defined by the right pathway, not a single route.

However, it is sometimes assumed that 13+ schools prepare pupils primarily for boarding entry and therefore place less emphasis on 11+ success. This is a misconception we frequently encounter. We should therefore view this model as a strength. Every child’s journey is different, and a one size fits all approach can be limiting. Over recent years, we have seen a growing number of families seeking flexibility as they navigate senior school decisions. With the rise of pre testing and early offers, most pupils now sit external assessments in Year 6, whether they are leaving at 11+ or remaining until 13+. This shift has, in effect, aligned the admissions landscape across day and boarding schools and reduced the dominance of traditional Common Entrance preparation.

At Broomwood, our approach reflects this change. Preparation for senior school begins in Year 5, when pupils enter our Middle Phase. From this point, we focus on developing agility and confidence across both digital and written assessments, supported by regular in class testing, targeted intervention, and increasing independence in learning.

A distinctive advantage of our school is our extended day, which allows for additional stretch and support within the timetable. Pupils also complete homework in school, supported by teachers, ensuring that preparation is structured, balanced, and carefully guided.

Alongside academic preparation, pupils benefit from interview practice, mock interviews, and focused sessions on exam technique, including how to approach different assessment formats. These are designed to ensure pupils are calm, confident, and well prepared for the process ahead.

This support extends to families as well as pupils. We meet each family individually in Year 4 and again at the end of Year 5 to guide decision making and discuss senior school options. These conversations evolve over time, reflecting the fact that children grow, circumstances change, and the right destination at nine may not be the same at eleven or thirteen.

Throughout this process, we are careful not to reduce education to preparation alone. While academic rigour is essential, so too is enjoyment, curiosity, and balance. We believe that excessive pressure can undermine confidence, and we work deliberately to ensure

that pupils remain positive, motivated, and secure in their learning.

Our pupils’ outcomes speak for themselves. This year, Broomwood Prep pupils have achieved a record number of scholarships, alongside offers to a wide range of senior schools at both 11+ and 13+. At 11+, in particular, pupils have secured places at highly competitive London day schools including City of London, James Allen’s Girls’ School, Alleyn’s, Putney High, and Wimbledon High, alongside strong outcomes at leading boarding schools at 13+.

V& A Museum Presents SCHIAPARELLI: FASHION BECOMES ART

The first exhibition ever staged in the UK devoted to Schiaparelli. Spanning the 1920s to the present day, the exhibition charts the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most innovative fashion designers, Elsa Schiaparelli. The show traces the origins of the house, from its first, paradigm shifting garments, through to its present day incarnation in the hands of its creative director, Daniel Roseberry.

Featuring new research undertaken by art and fashion curators focused on the creative collaborations and output of founder Elsa Schiaparelli, the exhibition places her at the nexus of innovation, a key figure within a stellar sphere of fashion, art and performance which spanned the cities of Paris, London, and New York in the years between the two world wars and up to her retirement in 1954. It highlights the history of a female entrepreneur and showcases her celebrated, yet little seen garments from the history of fashion.

The exhibition is the first of its kind to spotlight the London branch of Schiaparelli, its dynamic and independent clients and the founder’s own involvement in the satellite location.

The exhibition comprises over 200 objects, including garments, accessories, jewellery, paintings, photographs, sculpture, furniture, perfumes and archive material. The diversity of media, styles and subjects celebrates the house of Schiaparelli’s boundless creativity. The V&A holds some of Elsa Schiaparelli’s most radical designs. The exhibition features the V&A’s ‘Skeleton’ dress and the ‘Tears’ dress, along with a hat shaped to look like an upside down shoe, all conceived in collaboration with Salvador Dalí.

Artworks by Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Man Ray are also on display. The exhibition references the popularity of Schiaparelli’s

designs for film and theatre productions. Schiaparelli possessed a vibrant artistic sensibility. Turning ordinary items into innovative clothing, accessories and jewellery, she created the most memorable fashions of the day. Her couture house, the most discussed of interwar Paris, redefined standards of style and definitions of beauty.

Today, from the iconic Schiaparelli atelier at 21 Place Vendôme, creative director Daniel Roseberry accompanies the storied Maison into its next chapter, establishing an oeuvre that continues to shape and inspire global culture today.

A SMALL CHANGE, A REMARKABLE RESULT

With summer in full swing, and Aperols flowing it’s no wonder those statement earrings have come out to play. Whether you’re sporting the snazzy diamond earrings you persuaded your husband to buy you as your ‘ I love you present’ or that pair of colourful Accessorize earrings you bought at the airport to match your outfit for the wedding in the south of France, those ear lobes are slowly being stretched.

The solution we all resort to is trying to adjust our hair to subtly cover the ear lobe without covering the earring, an art that takes hours perfecting in front of the mirror while I for one am painfully aware the actual piercing hole is being stretched! The predicament sets in... do I stop wearing those diamonds that I made my husband remortgage his life for, or do I do something about it. The latter sounds way more appealing.

So I make my way to The London Clinic to see Mr Amir Sadri, the no nonsense plastic surgeon, whose stitching is apparently the neatest in London. His honesty during my consultation is surprisingly refreshing. No pierced earrings for a month afterwards...

those vintage Chanel clip ons my mother gave me in the 80’s will be making a comeback while I’m in recovery.

Mr Sadri assures me that no one will notice I’ve had any work done. The last thing I want is to be discussed over lunch at Daphne’s with the obvious question ‘if she’s had her ears done what next?’. My belief is that surgery should be subtle and look natural.

Consultation over and I’m sold. I immediately book into have my procedure in 2 weeks time. This means I can use Cornwall as my downtime. My sun hat and Prada sunnies will avert any nosey eyes away from my ears. Perfect!

Two weeks later and I’m raring and ready to go. The procedure is under local anaesthetic and I’m met by the charming Mr Sadri himself to go through my consent forms. He is kind and puts me at ease, he explains the most painful part is when he injects the anaesthetic into my earlobes.

During my surgery He’s matter of fact and swift. Concentrating on the job in hand while I chat to the nurses who are charming. We chat about kids and holidays until it’s over. I look in the mirror expecting to look bruised, like I’ve been bitten by a dog but I’m pleasantly surprised. It’s hardly noticeable and with my hair strategically placed in front of my ears no one will notice.

The pain minimal, the results magical! He really does live up to his incredible reputation, and now holds a firm place in my little black book. Preparing Your Body

1. Embrace a Mediterranean diet

“There’s good evidence that a Mediterranean diet improves egg and sperm quality,” says Professor Macklon. Think colourful vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, dairy and eggs.

2. Don’t overspend on supplements

A balanced diet covers most of what your body needs. There are three vitamins worth adding in: folic acid, omega 3 and vitamin D.

3. Quit smoking — and vaping too

Smoking affects both egg and sperm quality, and while vaping is less harmful, the nicotine still has an impact.

4. Aim for a healthy BMI

Being significantly over or underweight

— a BMI below 19 — can affect ovulation. “Your body wants to feel ready to invest in somebody else so it can

carry a pregnancy,” Professor Macklon explains.

5. Reduce your alcohol intake

An occasional glass of wine is fine. “It’s when you’re drinking more than eight or nine units a week that it might have a detrimental effect,” says Professor Macklon.

When You’re Actively Trying

6. Time it right — but not too precisely

“The most fertile day is actually two days before ovulation. When your test turns positive, you’ll ovulate in around 36 hours — and that’s when most pregnancies occur,” says Professor Macklon.

7. Keep intimacy enjoyable

“Don’t make it a chore — once on your fertile days is genuinely enough,” advises Professor Macklon.

8. Know when to seek help

If you’re under 37, consider see a specialist after a year of trying; if you’re over 37, go after six months. “If you’re anxious, seek help any time,” says Professor Macklon.

“Interior design starts with a conversation, not a colour chart,” says Karl. “Before we think about colour, materials or furniture, we want to understand how someone lives. Are they constantly entertaining? Do they work from home? Where do they escape to after a long

day? Where does the family naturally gather? The answers to those questions should shape the design far more than the latest trend.”

The owner of BAYA’s latest penthouse at Chelsea Waterfront’s Tower East leads a life that’s constantly evolving, and their home evolves with it. In the morning, it’s a place of quiet focus. By lunchtime, it’s the backdrop to family life. In the evening, it transforms effortlessly into a setting for generous entertaining, where conversations begin around the kitchen and continue long after dinner has been cleared away. “We don’t design rooms,” says Karl. “We

design the moments that happen inside them. The coffee before everyone else wakes up. Friends gathering around the kitchen while dinner is cooking. Reading in the afternoon sun. The rituals that make a house feel like home. If you understand those moments, the design almost starts to reveal itself.”

That thinking shapes every corner of the penthouse. Rather than creating one vast open plan room, BAYA has choreographed a series of distinct yet interconnected spaces, each supporting a different rhythm of daily life. The generous living area is arranged around curved sofas that naturally encourage conversation, while the building’s distinctive diamond shaped geometry is embraced through bespoke joinery that transforms structural columns into welcoming architectural features.

sculptural headboards transform functional dividing walls into architectural centrepieces, wrapping each room in warmth, texture and a reassuring sense of sanctuary. Layered materials, carefully considered lighting and tactile finishes create spaces designed as much for emotional restoration as physical comfort.

For Karl, the measure of a successful interior isn’t whether it photographs beautifully, but how people feel in the space, and how it transforms someone’s everyday life.

“The best compliment I can receive isn’t that someone loves the colours or furniture. It’s when they tell me their children always end up gathering in the kitchen after school, or they’ve found a favourite spot to read. That’s when you know you’ve designed more than an interior. You’ve designed a home that genuinely works for the people living in it.”

Ah, Scandinavia, the mere mention of the word conjures imagery of Mads Mikkelsen pedalling down a Copenhagen cycle path on his way to acquire Kardemummabullar at some local bakery. But when we’re not thinking of the pastries or the pastel coloured buildings, we’re thinking, of course, about the furniture. None can claim to be a Scandi design symbol more than the perfection in paper cord that is Hans Wegner’s CH24 Wishbone chair.

While it is an icon of Northern Europe by one of the old masters of chair making, times and trends change, so how can you adapt one of Denmark’s finest to your own tastes?

Hence why both often deploy copious amounts of wood, clean lines and versatility, all qualities that define the star of this article.

To make them both work in your home is to harmonise their defining qualities. Take a hero piece like a large oval dining table and balance its understated splendour with Oak Oiled CH24s, add that signature 1950s flash

Supplemented Scandi: We’ve arrived; it had to happen eventually. The obvious choice for one of the most recognisable symbols of Danish design, surrounded by other icons from its homeland. In fact, every surface that is not part of the floor or attached to the ceiling should embrace it. Save warm yet simplistic hues and soft textures for those remaining elements.

Abstract and Artful: One style that Danish design is rarely associated with is abstract furniture. Peaceful and serene, yes, but typically uniform. Make no mistake, this works massively in its favour within its natural habitat; you can mix and match multiple brands to your heart’s content with little concern for clashes. So, we know walnut is the way forward, but we are aiming for the pinnacle of home comfort.

Drawing inspiration from an original OKA archive design and rooted in our philosophy of designing to live well, we felt it was time to refresh and reintroduce this much loved piece.

Created with longevity in mind, this is a piece designed to become a modern heirloom, bringing a sense of occasion to outdoor entertaining year after year. Compact and portable, it allows hosts to take elegance wherever they go, from the garden to the countryside.

Crafted from rich, soft blue leather and lined in OKA’s iconic Ocellus print, it opens to reveal a beautifully arranged interior that is as practical as it is aesthetic.

Inside, you’ll find everything needed to serve drinks with ease: a flask, hip flask and shot cups, alongside tumblers, wine coolers, ice tongs, a corkscrew and bottle opener. A GRAVEL SURFACE FIT FOR A KING:

Designing Stability at the Royal Windsor Flower Show

“We need your Gravelrings as his Highness is coming, and the garden will see all kinds of traffic. It has to stay firm and still look beautiful,”

Ahead of the Royal Windsor Flower Show, the lead Garden Designer for the project at Landform contacted Beauxfort with a clear brief: create a flawless, stable gravel surface worthy of royal approval.

With His Majesty in attendance and the garden’s reputation on the line, the installation had to be both strong and stunning. The designer envisioned a natural, self binding gravel surface that looked seamless while standing up to the demands of the event.

The solution? Gravelrings, a high performance gravel stabilisation system that effortlessly delivered elegance and durability across the 110sqm garden pathway.

When designing a garden for a royal audience, every element had to look and perform flawlessly, including the surface underfoot. The gravel surface needed to complement the garden’s ‘Patterns in Nature’ theme, balancing natural beauty with lasting strength.

The Gravelrings’ mesh base design made that possible, keeping the gravel perfectly in place even under continuous foot traffic. Once filled, the grid vanished completely, allowing Allgreen’s Harleyford Blend to take centre stage; a light, natural looking finish that blended seamlessly with the surrounding planting. The result was a self binding gravel surface that looked beautiful, stayed firm, and enhanced the elegance of the entire garden.

The garden not only had to look perfect, but it also had to perform. The pathways would face continuous foot traffic, wheelchairs, pushchairs, trolleys and more, all while contending with the

unpredictability of British weather.

Gravelrings’ low profile design provided the strength needed beneath the surface while remaining completely invisible, preserving the garden’s natural aesthetic and the intricate Fibonacci inspired layout. Beyond its appearance, the system gave the Landform team complete confidence that the pathways would stay stable, smooth, and flawless from start to finish.’

Described by the installation team as ‘easy to work with,’ Gravelrings helped them create a surface that looked immaculate and felt completely stable underfoot. Designer Alan Williams shared that he was ‘very happy with the garden,’ and Landform later requested to use the same system at their Glasshouse Collective show space, a testament to its performance and lasting value.

This project perfectly demonstrates what Gravelrings was designed for: a stable, sustainable, and stylish gravel surface that performs as beautifully as it looks.
