Baby chimpanzee born at Colchester Zoological Society (CZS) after 17 years
Colchester Zoological Society, located near Colchester in Essex, England, is a popular zoological park set across more than 60 acres of landscaped parkland and lakes. Opened in June 1963, it has grown from a modest collection into a leading conservation and visitor attraction that’s home to over 150 species, from majestic big cats and primates to rare birds, reptiles and amphibians. Known for its immersive themed habitats such as Kingdom of the Wild and Rajang’s Forest, the zoo blends wildlife preservation with engaging experiences for all ages, and it now operates under the charitable organisation Colchester Zoological Society with a strong focus on global conservation and education. In the early hours of Saturday 17th January 2026, the Animal Care Team were delighted to discover female chimpanzee, Kora, had given birth to a healthy baby.
Kora was born at CZS in November 1999 to mum, Billy-Joe. This is Kora’s first offspring and is the first time the Zoo has welcomed a baby chimpanzee since Talia was born back in March 2009. The Animal Care Team are pleased to report that mum and baby are doing
well along with dad, Napoleon.
Napoleon arrived from Bioparc Fuengirola, Spain on 2nd April 2025 as part of an EEP (EAZA Ex Situ Programme) breeding recommendation. At the end of April 2025, Napoleon was integrated into the female group and began interacting with the trio. Napoleon is easy to tell apart from the females as he is much larger in size and can often be seen rolling about on the floor.
Chimpanzees are currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species and face a number of threats out in the wild, including habitat loss from deforestation as well has being hunted for bushmeat. Therefore, this new arrival is great news for the conservation of these animals.
CZS know that this is a very exciting time and visitors will be keen to see the baby, but they do kindly ask that all visitors remain quiet when visiting Chimpanzee Lookout to allow the new family time to settle. The Zoo will be providing updates on the new arrival via their website and social media channels as they have them.
L“If you’re dreaming of your own luxury kitchen, there’s no better place to start than our showrooms”
uxury kitchens have evolved. No longer defined solely by a monumental island, dramatic stone, or gleaming appliances, the most captivating spaces today are living, breathing environments, where beauty and function intertwine, and every detail is a reflection of how we truly live.
At the heart of this transformation is organisation, not rigid, clinical order, but a quiet choreography that feels effortless. Modern storage elevates the everyday into the extraordinary, softly lit shelves showcase everyday items like gallery pieces, concealed compartments keep daily tools perfectly at hand, and dedicated zones transform the chaos of ingredients and appliances into a serene ritual. Luxury, here, is clarity.
Personalisation whispers, rather than shouts. Engraved drawers, etched with family names, food groups, or playful phrases, remove guesswork while introducing subtle craftsmanship that feels
intimate and considered. These are the details you notice subconsciously, the joy of opening a drawer that seems made just for you, the tactile satisfaction of order that mirrors life itself.
Concealed storage creates the foundation of calm. Pullouts, integrated racks, and meticulously designed compartments allow daily routines to flow effortlessly, leaving surfaces clear and spaces visually serene. Every movement is intuitive, every element in its place, and yet the design never feels cold or contrived.
But restraint without display risks sterility. Here, open shelving, glazed cabinets, and softly illuminated interiors invite the eye and the hand to linger. Objects become part of the narrative of the home, cookware, glassware, and ingredients celebrated as much for their beauty as their function. In these kitchens, storage is not hidden; it performs and delights, transforming everyday living into a quiet, luxurious ritual.
If you’re dreaming of your own luxury kitchen, there’s no better place to start than our showrooms to experience these spaces firsthand, explore bespoke storage solutions, and let our experts guide you in creating a kitchen that is as beautiful as it is functional and uniquely yours.

BY APPOINTMENT TO HIS MAJESTY THE KING
ASTON MARTIN RECEIVES THE ROYAL WARRANT
Having created elite performance cars for over a century Aston Martin have received this prestigious seal of approval.
The Royal Warrant is an institution with a history that stretches back centuries and a commitment that reaches into the future. Aston Martin are honoured to receive this Warrant from King Charles III. It’s a continuation of a story that dates back to 1982 when the company was first granted a Royal Warrant as a Motor Car Manufacturer and Repairer to The Prince of Wales.
“The Royal Warrant is an institution with a history that stretches back centuries and a commitment that reaches into the future”
Then as now, a Royal Warrant was a finite accolade, awarded for a period of five years. For a warrant to be issued or renewed, a brand must demonstrate a continued commitment to excellence. An ongoing dedication to standards not easily attained. It cannot be bought. It cannot be sponsored. It’s a recognition of the products that the Royal Household itself chooses. Founded in 1484, the College of Arms is responsible for creating and maintaining official registers of coats of arms. Their release of the Royal Crest created for King Charles III means we can now formally apply the prestigious Royal Arms.
The relationship between Aston Martin and the Royal Family started in earnest over 70 years ago, when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, purchased a Lagonda Drophead Coupé in 1954. Used extensively by the Duke, the car was even winched aboard the royal yacht Britannia to accompany him on his Commonwealth Tour in
1956-1957.
in 1964, Queen Elizabeth II visited Aston Martin’s then headquarters at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, to celebrate the global success of DB5. A car that became an instant symbol of style, speed and the very best of British after starring in the James Bond film released the same year, Goldfinger.
To mark that royal visit, Aston Martin engineers built a drivable miniature replica of the DB5, complete with dummy machine guns, raisable bulletproof shield, electric water jets, smokescreen device and a two-way radio. Capable of a top speed of 10mph, the miniature car, complete with rotating numberplate registration JB 007, was a
much-loved toy for the late Queen’s children. It’s now displayed in the museum at Sandringham.
In 1969, the Queen and Prince Philip’s association with Aston Martin continued when they bought the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) an Aston Martin DB6 Volante Series II in Seychelles Blue. Perhaps the most iconic of all the Aston Martins that the King has owned over the years, the same car was used at the
“It is one of the great cars. I adore the design and the lines. They are special. I remember Lord Snowdon had a marvellous DB5 in a beautiful gunmetal colour. It was always the car to have”
wedding of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales in 2011.
As the King said, “It is one of the great cars. I adore the design and the lines. They are special. I remember Lord Snowdon had a marvellous DB5 in a beautiful gunmetal colour. It was always the car to have.” As part of the King’s commitment to sustainability, his DB6 has since been converted to run on E85 bioethanol, minimising its carbon emissions.
This intriguing combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation reflects the Aston Martin approach to car building, which draws on a legacy of passion, skill, and creativity stretching back 112 years.
The quilting and perforating technology that won the innovation category in the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in 2024 is a perfect example. Digital control has opened up a world of bespoke tailoring that would not be possible with traditional methods. This allows Q by Aston Martin division to craft personalised patterns that also enhance the cooling function of the seats. Blending exclusivity and design with invention.
The Royal Warrant is an honour that Aston Martin is proud to bear in the form of the Royal Coat of Arms. By appointment to His Majesty the King. astonmartin.com
LUXURY TRAVEL
Heading away to explore the rest of the world
IMAGE: WILDERNESS DESTINATIONS
Wilderness in Rwanda
In Rwanda’s northern highlands, where the mist drapes itself softly over the Virunga volcanoes and the forest breathes with ancient rhythm, a new chapter in conscious luxury travel is unfolding. With the launch of The Sanctuary at Wilderness Bisate, Wilderness deepens its commitment to redefining what it means to travel well — where restoration, wellness and design are inseparable from the experience itself.
Set within the greater Wilderness Bisate experience — encompassing both Wilderness Bisate Lodge and the exclusive Wilderness Bisate Reserve — this evolution positions Rwanda not only as the home of one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters, but as a global leader in luxury travel rooted in purpose. Gorilla trekking may be the draw, but it is the holistic journey — one of wellbeing, conservation and cultural connection — that lingers long after departure.
Overlooking Volcanoes National Park, Wilderness
Bisate Lodge has long been celebrated as a gateway to encounters with the endangered mountain gorilla. Its forest villas, shaped like elegant thatched cones, rise organically from the landscape, their design inspired by Rwanda’s Royal Palace and traditional craftsmanship. Inside, bold textures, natural materials and panoramic views of the volcanic peaks create a sense of immersion — a feeling of being both held by the land and quietly awed by it.
Beyond its striking aesthetic, Bisate tells a deeper story of impact. Once a heavily degraded area, the surrounding hillsides have been transformed through one of Rwanda’s most ambitious reforestation projects. More than a 150,000 indigenous trees have been
planted, restoring vital rainforest habitat and creating ecological corridors for wildlife. Guests are not passive observers here; they are participants. Each stay contributes directly to the long-term protection of biodiversity, reinforcing Wilderness’ belief that conservation-led tourism can be a powerful force for regeneration.
This ethos reaches its most refined expression at Wilderness Bisate Reserve, an intimate eight-guest retreat. Designed by Nicholas Plewman Architects with interiors by Caline WilliamsWynn, the Reserve is a masterclass in purposeful luxury. Sustainable materials — mimosa bamboo decking, hand-chipped volcanic rock pathways, timber floors and woven reed mats — ground the architecture firmly in its environment, while expansive villas offer fireplaces, private decks, wood-fired outdoor hot tubs and in-room wellness treatments.
Art and storytelling are woven into every detail. Local artisans play a central role, from the evocative gorilla artworks of Rigobert Uwiduhaye to motifs inspired by traditional imigongo patterns. The Bisate Kwanda boutique and gallery further celebrate Rwandan creativity, offering guests the chance to engage with locally made crafts that carry both cultural meaning and economic impact.
Now, with the introduction of The Sanctuary, wellness becomes not just an amenity but a philosophy fully embedded into the Bisate journey. Accessible to guests of both the Lodge and the Reserve, The Sanctuary is a serene, purpose-built haven designed to encourage deep rest and reconnection. Heated salt-water lap pools, steam rooms, ice baths, meditation pods, yoga and gym spaces sit alongside treatment rooms infused with curated soundscapes and signature scents — all carefully considered to quiet the mind and attune the senses to nature.
This approach reflects a broader redefinition of luxury: one that values stillness over spectacle, authenticity over excess. At Bisate, wellness is not scheduled; it is felt — in the rhythm of the forest, the warmth of the fire, the deliberate pace of life on the hillside.
Together, Wilderness Bisate and Bisate Reserve
form part of a wider Rwandan conservation narrative. The recent launch of Wilderness Magashi Peninsula in Akagera National Park underscores this vision, offering a complementary savannah safari experience in a landscape restored through the conservation efforts of African Parks, in partnership with the Rwandan Development Board. From gorilla trekking in the rainforests of the north to classic Big Five encounters in the east, Rwanda’s landscapes tell a story of resilience, protection and possibility.
What unites these places is Wilderness’ long-term commitment to people and planet. Community collaboration, sustainable design and ecological restoration are not supporting acts — they are the foundation. Guests leave knowing that their presence has helped restore forests, support livelihoods and protect some of the world’s most precious wildlife.
At Wilderness Bisate, luxury is measured not by what is taken from the land, but by what is given back. And in that exchange — quiet, meaningful and enduring — Rwanda reveals itself as one of the most compelling destinations of our time. wildernessdestinations.com
THE ART OF A CORNISH SUMMER
There is a quiet elegance to summer on the North Cornish coast. A sense of ease shaped by space, light and days lived in step with the sea. It’s the understated approach to luxury that defines a stay with Latitude50.
High summer here is about living well, without overthinking it. Mornings begin with sunlight spilling through open doors and sea air drifting into kitchens designed for gatherings. Bare feet trace a familiar path between house and terrace, coffee in hand, eyes drawn instinctively towards the horizon where the Atlantic glimmers below, calm one moment, exhilarating the next.
From sweeping headlands to sheltered bays, the coastline offers a varied yet connected experience. Homes sit comfortably within the landscape, where architecture and setting exist in quiet harmony. Expansive glazing frames coastal views, terraces are positioned for all-day sun, and gardens naturally encourage a slower pace. Some properties flaunt private pools catching the light throughout the day; others sit moments from the sand, where early swims and evening walks quickly become part of the daily rhythm.
Indoors, the mood is relaxed yet refined. Open living spaces invite togetherness, while quieter corners offer space to pause with a book, a view, a moment of stillness. As the day unfolds, kitchens
flow seamlessly outdoors, setting the scene for long lunches, barefoot suppers and unhurried evenings beneath softening skies.
This approach to coastal living sits at the heart of Latitude50, a boutique holiday brand rooted in North Cornwall. Their carefully curated collection of homes across Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac are chosen not just for location, but for how each home feels to arrive at, settle into and slowly unwind within.
What defines a Cornish summer is not spectacle, but feeling. Unhurried. Considered. Gently indulgent. It’s the freedom to leave doors open, plans loose and time unstructured. To savour the luxury of space, privacy and time spent beside one of Britain’s most beautiful coastlines.

Ride. Explore. Escape.
There is something quietly magical about exploring the countryside by e-bike. Effortless enough to feel indulgent, immersive enough to feel like a genuine adventure, it offers a way to slow down, travel further and notice more along the way.
Cranborne Chase Escapes creates private guided and self-guided electric bike experiences across one of southern England’s most beautiful and lesser-known landscapes. Rolling chalk downland, wide skies, winding lanes and rewarding viewpoints set the tone, with carefully chosen routes that balance gentle effort with time to pause, explore, and enjoy the journey.
E-bikes make the experience wonderfully inclusive. Hills become manageable, distances feel achievable and groups can ride together at an easy, sociable pace. Couples, friends, families, and small groups are free to focus on conversation, scenery, and shared moments rather than speed or stamina.
Every ride is thoughtfully tailored. Guests can opt for leisurely pub loops, longer countryside explorations, or more adventurous off-road sections, depending on appetite and mood. High-quality electric bikes are delivered directly to your accommodation, fully equipped
and ready to ride, keeping logistics simple and the day refreshingly unhurried. For those arriving by train, discreet collection and dropoff from Salisbury can also be arranged.
What truly defines Cranborne Chase Escapes is its emphasis on quiet, restorative travel. This is not about ticking off miles or chasing performance. It is about discovering hidden corners, lingering at viewpoints, stopping for coffee in villages you might otherwise pass through, and returning with the satisfying sense of having properly experienced a place.
Whether enjoyed as a relaxed day away from the city, a highlight of a countryside stay or a memorable way to spend time with friends, these rides offer something rare: a feeling of freedom without rush, adventure without pressure, and connection without distraction.
Big skies. Chalk tracks. Pub stops. A slower, more rewarding way to roam.
Designed for guests who value quality over quantity, each experience reflects local knowledge, careful planning, and a genuine love of the landscape, creating days that remain in the memory long after the bikes are returned and everyday routines resume at home again. cranbornechase.com

YOUR HOLIDAY SHOULDN’T BE HARD WORK
Q&A with Carsten Lund, Founder of TRIPLA
Q. When we were chatting before this interview, you said luxury is about “ease.” What does that mean to you?
To me, true luxury is when everything flows. That doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful. A wellness retreat in the Alps where transfers, spa treatments, and mountain hikes are seamlessly coordinated. Or a short city break where the flights, hotel, and a hard-to-get dinner reservation are already sorted. We do work with high-touch experiences, but it’s not about the price tag, it’s about removing stress and creating something that feels personal.
Q. In your experience as a traveller and industry professional, have you noticed travel needs changing in recent years?
Very much so. People are no longer just looking for a nice hotel or a beautiful view, they often want something deeper, something that resonates. I’ve noticed a real shift towards travel that feels meaningful. For some, that means behind-the-scenes cultural access; meeting local artisans, exploring places tourists don’t usually see. For others, it’s culinary journeys, connecting with a region through its food and wine. And increasingly, it’s about restoration: wellness retreats, mindful escapes, and time to simply switch off in a way daily life doesn’t allow. Travel has become less about ticking off a destination and more about creating experiences that inspire, enrich, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
We’ve all been there. Ten-tabs deep in-flight options, hotel reviews, and “must-see” lists. Why does organising time away so often feel like a job in itself? We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach.
Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences?
I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens, from barefoot escapes on private islands to cultural weekends in Europe, and even multi-generational cruises or villas. And what always stands out is how much detail matters. The transfer that’s waiting without fuss or the restaurant that actually lives up to its promise. It’s these little things that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.
Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging?
Time, mostly. People are busy, and while travel should be restorative, organising it often isn’t. I’ve seen clients arrive exhausted before their holiday even begins because they’ve spent weeks trying to piece it all together online. One family I worked with wanted a milestone birthday in Tuscany. They’d been overwhelmed by villa choices and didn’t know which were genuinely right for them. We stepped in, found a villa with space for grandparents, teenagers, and young children, complete with a private chef for a celebratory meal and a private wine tasting. For them, it turned from a logistical headache into a celebration they’ll never forget.
Q. With travel uncertainty on the rise, how can travellers be sure their money is safe?
It’s a very real question for many travellers. At TRIPLA, protection isn’t an add-on - it’s the foundation of everything we do. All flight-inclusive holidays are fully ATOL protected, and every client payment is held securely in Trust by NatWest Bank and the Travel Trust Association. This means client money is safeguarded from the moment they book, even in the unlikely event that a supplier or TRIPLA were to fail. In a landscape where reassurance matters, TRIPLA ensures every journey is 100% financially secure.
Q. What’s the best way to start planning a trip with TRIPLA? Everything begins with getting to know you. When clients connect with us - whether online or by getting in touch directly - it gives us a sense of their travel style and helps us start shaping ideas that are genuinely personal. Joining our mailing list also keeps you in the loop with tailored inspiration, updates and occasional offers, including the chance to win a £500 travel voucher. It’s a simple first step toward creating a journey designed entirely around you.
Q. And finally, what do you hope clients feel when they travel with TRIPLA?
Peace of mind, really. That feeling of being looked after so they can just enjoy the experience. Whether it’s a river cruise with private excursions, a birthday in Tuscany, or a quick Parisian escape between board meetings, I want them to feel it was designed just for them. And that they never had to worry about the details.

Awakening the
Curious Explorer
In a world of five-star resorts and predictable itineraries, one luxury travel brand is defining what it means to explore. We sat down with the founder of award-winning luxury travel company, The Luminaire, Adam Sebba, to talk curiosity, immersive journeys, and why the future of travel belongs to those who want more than just a beautiful view.
What was the origin of The Luminaire?
Simply, when we started – I saw a huge need for something new – a travel company for the curious explorer, and it’s just grown from there.
I’d worked in luxury travel for years and I had seen plenty of hotels and companies for resorts and beaches, but I didn’t see any travel companies that really cared about the curious explorer.
I love that idea of a “Curious Explorer” archetype – does that describe you personally?
Definitely - I think I am a curious person at heart and have always been, since family holidays with my parents going to explore farflung places around the world – it could be a museum or a safari tent – but their rule was – to try one new food every day, and that made us adventurous from a young age.
“Our ideal is to create journeys that awaken curiosity — nature, art, photography, food — experiences people might not have imagined, but instantly say ‘wow - I want to do that’.”
What’s special about a Luminaire trip?
Ultra-Personalisation, creativity and service. We put a huge amount of creativity and design into all our journeys, and every trip is personalised so it feels unique to the guests travelling. I think our trips like the Samurai Culture of Japan, where guests have a deep and immersive experience into modern and ancient Japanese culture – and the Cambodia Temples trip where families stay overnight in a temple – think Indiana Jones, exploring it by flaming torchlight!
What are you most excited for, in 2026?
I’m incredibly excited about taking our kids (7 and 8) on safari. The lodge we are going to has regular sightings of leopard cubs, lion and hippo.
We’ve also launched a charity partnership with Virgin Unite in 2025 and I’d love to go on one of our challenges – all for charity. We have a Bhutan Trek to the Tiger’s Nest temple, and a Kilimanjaro hike challenge, just before Christmas – having trekked to the top I can say it’s truly stunning.

Bespoke Yacht Charter Experiences for Every Desire
There are yacht charters, and then there are those that expand the imagination, where horizon becomes destination and every moment feels entirely your own. Director Dominic Meredith Hardy conveys that Classic Charters exists to unlock those rarefied experiences, crafting bespoke yacht adventures across the world’s greatest destinations – and, most importantly, to create memories that last a lifetime.
“These timeless beauties offer two distinct yet perfectly complementary ways to explore Italy’s west coast”
This month, for House Magazine, Dominic reflects on why, in the Mediterranean, sometimes two yachts, or an exceptional chase boat, can open up a world of possibilities that a single vessel cannot…
This summer, for example, Far Niente offers guests the unique chance to explore the Ionian Sea and Croatian coast in timeless comfort. Launched in 2024 with classic lines and modern refinement, she is the ideal platform for languid days among Greek isles, hidden bays, and glass-clear waters, all shaped to your own rhythm. But what if you’ve planned a full beach day with friends yet wish to spend the night in a secluded bay at the far end of the island? Far Niente’s remarkable 10m Novamarine Black Shiver tender, Dolce – included in the charter – is the answer. It gives you the freedom to race ahead to discover untouched coves and caves unreachable by larger vessels. Perfect for deeper exploration, or for those long, indulgent taverna lunches where time slips away, yet you still arrive back onboard Far Niente just in time for golden-hour cocktails.
Uniquely new to charter, and ready for unforgettable Italian summers, are SY Javelin and MY Nina Spirit of the Wind. Available separately or together, these two timeless beauties offer another distinct yet perfectly complementary way to experience Italy’s west coast, from Sardinia to Sicily and every shimmering anchorage in between.
Imagine exhilarating days aboard the gleaming Sailing Yacht Javelin, the wind surging you across sapphire seas, spray from
breaking waves cooling your sun kissed skin. Meanwhile, Nina Spirit of the Wind glides ahead, poised and elegant, rich with Italian charm, awaiting your arrival with canapés and cool cocktails as the sun descends. The perfect setting to relax, and recount the day’s adventures beneath a glowing Mediterranean sky.
Whether your dream is classic regatta racing in St Tropez, islandhopping in Tahiti, cruising hidden Ionian coves, or heli-skiing Greenland’s glaciers, Classic Charters will craft an itinerary that is wholly yours. If you can imagine it – from sunlit summers to polar silence – Classic Charters can make it happen. classic-charters.com | dominic@classic-charters.com

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS: UNLOCKING STUDENT POTENTIAL
IMAGE:
THAMES CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
We believe every child is a story waiting to be told. Whether they join us in Year 7 or later, we are dedicated to nurturing each child’s unique gifts and helping them flourish.
Founded 25 years ago, Thames is a well-established independent secondary school located next to Clapham Junction Station. Housed in a bespoke, RIBA award-winning building, the school has outstanding facilities for art, design, drama, music, science and cookery.
At a time when many schools are making compromises, Thames remains true to its founding ethos: small classes, strong relationships and a commitment to every child’s growth. We invest in people, not systems, ensuring your child receives the attention they deserve. Thames is not a machine. We get to know your child and take them on a journey that is shaped around who they are and where they want to go.
A broad curriculum is offered across all year groups, with a wide range of options from Year 9 onwards to meet the aspirations of each of our pupils. Our philosophy is that disciplines like maths and science should sit alongside the arts and humanities, fostering the kind of flexible, creative thinking that’s essential in the age of AI and
the modern world of work.
Provision for the creative subjects is outstanding and pupils can take multiple arts subjects just as easily as separate sciences and further maths. This handcrafted approach ensures that each and every pupil can follow their passions. A varied co-curricular programme of clubs, societies, camps and overseas trips, including our awardwinning trip to rural Tanzania, ensures pupils develop personally and socially as well as academically.
Our long-standing phone-free policy has proven invaluable in supporting focus, mental health and interpersonal connection. Likewise, our considered approach to educational technology limits screen dependency, allowing pupils to engage more deeply in the real world, not just the virtual one.
Our sixth form offers a personalised programme of academic study alongside life skills and personal development. Whether preparing for university or the workplace, students leave Thames equipped not only with strong qualifications but with resilience, confidence and purpose.

PREPARING YOUNG PEOPLE FOR LIFE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Education today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education.
Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers
“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”
Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination. Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability – qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.
Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part
of a team prepares students for realworld environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement.
Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends.
Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings.
By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

BECKENHAM’S BEST-KEPT SECRET: A LEADING PREP SCHOOL FULL OF HEART AND AMBITION
Tom Carter, Head of St Christopher’s The Hall, discusses what makes the prep school the talk of the town
Ihave always believed there is something rather special about discovering a place that feels as though it has been designed just for you. Not shouted about. Not showy. Just quietly excellent. That is how many families come to see St Christopher’s The Hall: Beckenham’s best-kept secret.
Nestled in the heart of Beckenham, we do not always announce ourselves as a London prep school, yet in ambition, outlook and opportunity, that is exactly what we are. Our pupils benefit from the academic rigour, cultural breadth and high expectations associated with a London education, alongside something increasingly rare:
the warmth, familiarity and genuine connection of a close local community. This balance sits at the heart of everything we do.
We are proudly small, and deliberately so. It allows every child to be known, understood and championed. Education here is bespoke and responsive, rooted in the belief that excellence is not achieved by forcing children into a single mould, but by recognising who they are, how they learn and what they might become. This is
what I mean when I talk about excellence differently.
As a London prep school, we set the bar high. Our pupils are encouraged to think independently, communicate confidently and engage deeply with their learning. Recent inspection outcomes reflect this clearly: children achieve highly because they are supported thoughtfully, challenged appropriately and taught exceptionally well. Character, curiosity and confidence are nurtured alongside academic success.
Our curriculum is intentionally forward-thinking. Strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge sit alongside a clear focus on the skills children will need in a rapidly changing world. Central to this is The Horizon Project, our distinctive weekly programme dedicated to leadership, collaboration, sustainability, problem-solving, creativity and self-awareness. These are not treated as optional extras, but as essential components of a modern education.
In an age dominated by screens and digital noise, I am also passionate about balance. Technology is embraced, but not allowed to eclipse childhood. Children learn to engage thoughtfully with the
digital world while developing the human skills that matter just as much: resilience, empathy, independence, imagination and the ability to think deeply rather than react quickly. Childhood here is still tangible, energetic and connected to people, ideas and experiences beyond a device.
Our close relationship with St Dunstan’s Educational Group strengthens this further, providing continuity and aspiration as pupils prepare for senior school. It means families can enjoy the intimacy of a small, caring prep school, while knowing their children are part of a wider, ambitious educational journey.
Yet for all of this strategy and structure, what defines St Christopher’s most powerfully is its atmosphere.
This is a school where families know one another. Where staff go the extra mile because they genuinely care. Where children feel safe enough to take risks, try new things and grow into themselves. Our Beckenham roots matter deeply to me. We are outward-looking in ambition, but grounded in community.
From the earliest years, children embark on a carefully designed journey through to Year 6. Learning is imaginative, purposeful and joyful, whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field or through the many enrichment opportunities that broaden horizons and build confidence.
Perhaps that is why I so often hear the same comment from new families: “We didn’t realise a school like this existed.”
A London prep school with heart.
A Beckenham school with ambition.
Quietly forward-thinking. Deeply personal.
St Christopher’s The Hall may be Beckenham’s best-kept secret, but for those who discover it, it quickly becomes something far more enduring: a community, a partnership, and a foundation for the future. DEVELOPING THE INDIVIDUAL
ALEX MURPHY, DEPUTY HEAD ACADEMIC AT ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE JUNIOR SCHOOL DISCUSSES HOW IMPORTANT EARLY YEARS EDUCATION IS IN CREATING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE
In independent education, questions of value for money have never been more sharply in focus. With fee increases linked to VAT changes and a cost of living that continues to challenge families, parents are scrutinising their investment in schooling more closely than ever. Schools often respond by showcasing their academic credentials, through league tables, exam statistics, university destinations. These are important indicators, but they paint only part of the picture. The true value of education is not captured solely in numbers; it is reflected in the individual a child becomes.
Independent education has sometimes been characterised as elitist or narrowly focused on academic attainment. This perception is increasingly outdated and does not align with what
schools or families want for children today. A values-driven education where the development of the whole child sits at the centre of a school’s ethos should be a priority across all sectors. When children feel supported, understood, and inspired, academic success naturally follows. Curiosity, a thirst for understanding, and a desire to make sense of the world are innate to childhood. But academic outcomes should not be prioritised at the expense of character, wellbeing, or emotional resilience. Families seeking the best education are placing far greater emphasis on ethos, wellbeing, and values than on exam results alone.
Academic achievement undoubtedly matters. Strong results open doors and create future opportunity. However, grades alone do not
“The most meaningful return on investment lies in the development of the whole child, in their capacity to think deeply, act with integrity, and face the future with a strong sense of self”
prepare children for the world they will enter. Without the ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, empathise with others, and navigate complexity, academic success risks becoming a narrow and fragile measure. Increasingly, employers and universities alike are seeking individuals who can learn independently, solve problems creatively, and approach new challenges with confidence and curiosity. In a rapidly evolving world, the most valuable skills of the future will be those that transcend subject boundaries.
Yet these human skills cannot be quantified on a spreadsheet. They do not sit neatly within performance tables. They are shaped in everyday moments of interaction, in the ethos of a school, and in the opportunities children are afforded to practise, reflect, and grow. This understanding is driving a noticeable shift: parents are choosing schools not simply because of rankings, but because their values align with those of the school community. They want environments where character, wellbeing, and personal growth sit comfortably alongside academic ambition.
Junior school pupils are at a pivotal stage in their development. Every classroom collaboration, playground negotiation, and moment of reflection contributes to the formation of character. These early years forge empathy, resilience, integrity, and independence, qualities that serve as lifelong foundations. If education focuses too narrowly on academic attainment, it risks producing children who excel in tests yet falter when faced with life’s complexities. By contrast, schools that treat character education as an integral part of learning help children understand themselves, build confidence, and develop the emotional literacy required to thrive.
A curriculum that includes metacognition and life skills empowers children not only to acquire knowledge but to understand how they learn, how they respond to challenge, and how
they relate to others. This is where true readiness for the future is shaped. It develops young people who can approach uncertainty with resilience, who value diverse perspectives, and who are equipped to contribute positively to their communities. These qualities endure long after their time in school.
In considering the “value” of an education, we must look beyond the immediate, quantifiable outputs. The most meaningful return on investment lies in the development of the whole child, in their capacity to think deeply, act with integrity, and face the future with a strong sense of self. This is not an optional extra; it is central to what education should provide. Ultimately, developing the individual is both the greatest responsibility and the greatest impact a school can have. It is also, in the truest sense, the most enduring value parents will ever receive.

YOU CAN DO IT ALL AT MILLFIELD AND MILLFIELD PREP SCHOOL
Prep School and the start of Senior School should be a time where students can, alongside their academics, try anything. They should have free reign to discover their passions, find what they’re good at, and try everything in a supportive, nurturing and positive environment. At Millfield and Millfield Prep School, pupils can do it all, without compromise.
At Millfield Prep, life beyond academics is rich and varied. With over 10 hours of sports and co-curricular sessions weekly, Year 7 and 8 pupils dive into everything from team sports and musical theatre productions to inter-house bakeoffs, councils, and camps. This is often where passions start to be discovered. Pupils are given the opportunity to try everything and find what they really love, and it’s absolutely fine, and actively encouraged, if this exploration continues into Year 9.
As part of the Nine at Millfield programme at Millfield Senior School, students are given the opportunity to try a range of different activities through the Millfield Activity Programme (MAP). The relaxed format and environment allow students to try something new, such as mountain biking, pickleball or beekeeping, with no commitment to continue it long term.
There is a clear correlation between good academic outcomes in the classroom being reflected on the sports field or in the arts, and vice versa.
Location is an important factor in choosing an appropriate Prep and Senior School. Millfield Prep is ideally located in the Somerset market town of Glastonbury, with all facilities conveniently on campus. This minimises the need for families to be driving around to drop children off at various different locations for early morning swimming, and late football training and the like.
The school is a short, seven-minute drive away from Millfield’s campus which share its facilities with Millfield Prep. Millfield’s campus offers a further 250 acres of Somerset countryside, as well as an Olympic sized swimming pool, Music School and 400-seat theatre.
Visit Millfield at their next Open Morning on Saturday 28 February or 9 May. Book online: millfieldschool.com/admissions/open-days
HOW LONDON’S EDUCATION LANDSCAPE IS CHANGING
London’s education landscape is undergoing a period of significant change as schools adapt to the needs of modern learners and an increasingly complex world. While academic achievement remains central, there is growing recognition that education must also support wellbeing, personal development and broader life skills.
One notable shift is the increased focus on smaller class sizes and more personalised learning. Across the capital, many schools are prioritising individual attention, enabling teachers to better understand each pupil’s strengths, challenges and learning styles. This approach supports stronger academic progress while fostering confidence and engagement in the classroom.
A more holistic approach to education is also gaining momentum. Schools are placing greater value on character development, creativity and extracurricular opportunities alongside traditional subjects. Programmes that encourage leadership, collaboration and problem-solving are increasingly embedded into school life, helping students develop skills that extend well beyond examinations.
Wellbeing and mental health have become central considerations, particularly in a fast-paced urban environment. London schools are investing in pastoral care, mindfulness initiatives and emotional literacy, recognising that students who feel supported are better equipped to succeed academically. Creating balanced learning environments is now widely viewed as essential rather than optional.
Curriculum innovation is another defining feature of change. Many schools are expanding learning beyond standard syllabuses to include financial literacy, digital skills, global citizenship and environmental
awareness. London’s rich cultural, scientific and historical resources are increasingly used to enrich teaching, bringing subjects to life through real-world context.
Technology is also reshaping education across the capital. Blended learning models, digital platforms and flexible teaching approaches allow for more adaptable and inclusive learning experiences, preparing students for a future in which digital fluency is vital.
Together, these developments signal a move towards an education system that balances academic excellence with wellbeing, creativity and adaptability. As London continues to evolve, so too does its approach to educating young people — ensuring they are prepared not only for exams, but for life beyond the classroom.
FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:
WHO GETS AHEAD?
Across many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top.
In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity.
Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors.
At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to highquality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system.
As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background — and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.
INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS: Unlocking Student Potential
With options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.
Enriched academic opportunities
One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.
Controlled class sizes
A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching
style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.
Dedicated teachers
In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.
Parental involvement
Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.
“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”
A safe environment
Private schools have reputations for
maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.
Ample resources
At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.
Extracurricular activities
While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a well-rounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.
Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world
Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs.
FLEXIBLE BOARDING THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS?
In today’s busy world, life does not always run on a regular 9-5 schedule. Parents travel, work flexibly and juggle shifting routines. That is exactly why flexi-boarding has become an appealing option for our families at Marymount International School London. It offers families a practical, modern way to balance home life with school engagement, giving students all the benefits of boarding without the need for a full-time commitment.
Flexi-boarding is what it says on the tin: boarding made flexible. Pupils can stay overnight on selected nights, making it ideal for younger students, first-time boarders or families with particularly busy weeks and conflicting commitments. Students still enjoy the full Marymount boarding experience - shared meals, cocurricular activities, supervised study sessions and strong pastoral care - while returning home regularly.
For those considering full boarding but feeling unsure or nervous about living away from home, flexi-boarding provides a gentle introduction which helps pupils build confidence, independence and friendships at a steady pace, making a later transition into full-time boarding feel natural and seamless.
For families, flexi boarding offers freedom and reassurance. It supports household routines, eases weekday pressure, ensures that homework gets done and provides consistent care when needed - all while keeping the option of family evenings at home when that works best. For students, it’s truly the best of both worlds: independence, structure and a vibrant social life at school, balanced with quality time at home.
Weekly boarding takes these benefits a step further. Pupils stay on campus from Monday to Friday, enjoying a structured and predictable routine that encourages independence, confidence and strong study habits. With fewer daily commutes, students have
more time to engage fully in lessons, enjoy unhurried breakfasts and take part in a wider range of cocurricular activities, while weekends at home allow for regular family connection. Weekly boarding is particularly well-suited to older students who thrive on weekday structure while enjoying the independence that comes from living away from home.
At Marymount International School London, all boarding options – flexi, weekly and full boarding - are underpinned by our inclusive Catholic ethos, close-knit community and exceptional pastoral care. Whether students board occasionally or full-time, they are e welcomed into an environment where they are known, supported and encouraged to thrive, academically, socially and personally. As one of our flexi boarders recently shared, “When I first came to boarding, I immediately felt welcomed by everyone. It’s a very warming community - the best part of my day.”
Choosing the right boarding option depends on your child’s personality, confidence and individual needs. At Marymount we work closely with families to find the best fit. With flexible choices, students and parents alike can feel confident that life at school will support wellbeing, personal growth and, of course, a lifelong love of learning.

JUNIOR KING’S AND THE KING’S SCHOOL CANTERBURY A Seamless Pathway
At King’s, we are committed to ensuring every pupil’s school journey is well-supported, engaging, and tailored to their individual strengths and interests. Located just under an hour from Central London, our schools offer families the rare combination of outstanding academic provision within a beautiful, historic setting, alongside excellent transport links and accessibility.
The 11+ provision at Junior King’s (for pupils aged 3–13) plays a key role in this journey, offering a smooth and carefully structured transition into Senior King’s while preserving the many advantages of a prep school education. This continuity is particularly valued by families seeking a clear and confident pathway from London and the South East into a leading independent school.
Joining Junior King’s in Year 7 gives children the opportunity to benefit from two additional years of prep school learning, where curiosity remains central, creativity is celebrated, and the freedom to explore is preserved. Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoy a broad and exciting curriculum supported by small class sizes, excellent facilities, and a strong pastoral system. Each pupil is known as an individual and guided in a way that helps them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Through places offered at 11+ allow families to plan with confidence. Pupils benefit from regular contact with the senior school through visits, shared events, and lessons delivered by Senior King’s staff. This
familiarity helps build a strong sense of continuity and belonging, so that by the time pupils move on to Year 9, the transition feels natural and positive.
The curriculum, too, is closely aligned across both schools. Our Global Perspectives programme begins in Year 7 and continues through to Year 9, encouraging pupils to think critically, ask questions, and explore global themes - valuable preparation for the challenges of GCSEs, A Levels, and life beyond school.
While the 11+ pathway offers a strong and connected route through King’s, we are equally proud of our large and vibrant 13+ intake. New joiners at this stage bring fresh ideas, new friendships, and help ensure our community remains dynamic and diverse.
We would be delighted to welcome you to join us for one of our Open Mornings, held throughout the year at both Junior King’s and The King’s School Canterbury. Easily accessible from Central London and the surrounding regions, individual tours are also available by appointment. kings-school.co.uk

RETHINKING THE ROUTE AFTER SCHOOL
The landscape of post-18 education is evolving fast, with young people now navigating a broader and more flexible range of pathways post school. While the traditional university route remains popular, degree apprenticeships are increasingly recognised as a strong alternative, combining academic study with professional experience and financial independence. At Bryanston, this shift is reflected in a Sixth Form curriculum designed to keep all options open. Pupils can choose from A Levels, the IB and CTEC, allowing them to progress confidently to university, apprenticeships or directly into employment.
Bryanston pupils continue to excel across this landscape. This year, three sixth formers secured places at Oxford, alongside offers from leading universities in the UK and overseas. These achievements demonstrate the school’s ongoing commitment to academic ambition. At the same time, growing interest in apprenticeships highlights a broader reassessment by families of how best to balance opportunity, employability and long-term career development.
A compelling example is Old Bryanstonian (OB) George Kleinschmidt, who left last summer and has secured a place on the highly competitive JP Morgan Chase Degree Apprenticeship. His success followed an initial rejection at final interview stage
last academic year. Rather than stepping away, George refined his approach, reapplied and succeeded, demonstrating the resilience and determination that apprenticeship routes often demand. With support from his tutor and Bryanston’s Head of Future Pathways, he strengthened his sector knowledge, built confidence through mock interviews and prepared thoroughly for later-stage selection.
In February, National Apprenticeship Week brought alumni and industry professionals back to Bryanston to share insights with current pupils. Former pupils now working at organisations such as JP Morgan, the BBC, Dyson and Savills provided realistic exposure to recruitment processes and first-hand perspectives on life as a degree apprentice.
Together, these stories reflect a modern educational environment where success is no longer defined by a single route post school. Whether through Oxford, medical school, leading universities worldwide or apprenticeships, Bryanston pupils are supported in finding the pathway that best suits them. This support extends beyond academics, with entrepreneurship actively championed through a dedicated Head of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, helping pupils develop initiative and real-world readiness.
Bryanston offers daily minibus routes, including from Sandbanks, alongside flexible boarding and day options. bryanston.co.uk

FRANSES JEWELLERS: CRAFTSMANSHIP, HERITAGE, AND A CONTINUING STORY
Adeep respect for craftsmanship is the mantra by which the Franses family heart beats. Franses Jewellers believes that fine jewellery should be thoughtfully designed, carefully made, and created to endure. This philosophy is brought to life through the work of James Franses, whose designs represent the fourth generation of a family tradition rooted in creativity and skill.
James Franses plays an integral role in shaping the identity of Franses today. With a background steeped in both traditional techniques and contemporary design, many of the jewellery collections are designed and crafted in-house, allowing for a level of detail and individuality that defines the brand. Each piece reflects a balance between timeless elegance and modern refinement, ensuring it feels relevant while retaining its character.
Designing and making jewellery in-house allows for a more personal approach. From the earliest sketches to the final polish, every stage is guided by an understanding of the significance jewellery holds for those who wear it. Whether creating a bespoke engagement ring or a refined everyday piece, the
focus remains the same: to create jewellery that feels meaningful, beautifully made, and destined to be cherished for generations.
James’s work is mastered by technical expertise and an intuitive sense of style. Inspiration is often drawn from classic forms and subtle detailing. Diamonds and precious gemstones are selected for
their quality and character, while each design is carefully considered to ensure longevity — both in craftsmanship and aesthetic. Through this approach, Franses jewellery continues to evolve while remaining true to its foundations.
This commitment to quality and creativity is inseparable from the wider Franses story — a story shaped by family, and a lifelong passion for fine jewellery.
The origins of Franses Jewellers can be traced back to a moment of quiet curiosity. Jeff Franses’ journey began simply by walking past a jewellery shop and being drawn in by a watch displayed in the window. It was a Patek Philippe timepiece, remarkable for its unusual shape and understated elegance. That moment sparked a fascination that would grow into a lifelong dedication to jewellery and horology.
Jeff’s keen eye for detail and natural appreciation for antique jewellery became defining traits. Over time, this instinctive understanding of craftsmanship and design laid the foundations for what Franses would become. Antique jewellery continues to influence the values of the business today — reinforcing the importance of quality, provenance, and thoughtful design.
As the business developed, it remained firmly rooted in family values. Knowledge was passed down through generations, not
only in terms of technical expertise, but in an understanding of service, integrity, and trust. Jewellery, after all, often marks life’s most meaningful moments, and Franses has always recognised the responsibility that comes with being part of those stories.
Today, as a fourth-generation family jeweller, Franses continues to honour that legacy while embracing the future. The business remains proudly independent, shaped by decades of experience and a shared passion for excellence. Its long-standing presence on Westover Road reflects a deep connection to Bournemouth and its community.
From Jeff’s first moment of inspiration to James’s contemporary designs, with the added visual merchandising skillset of Beverly Franses, and Jemma Franses’s exceptional customer service, Franses Jewellers represents a continuity of vision. Each piece tells a story — not only of the materials and the maker, but of a family whose heritage continues to shape every detail.

A HEALTHIER YOU
Backed By 24/7 Private GP Support At Home In London
The new year always starts beautifully, with fresh intentions to be healthier and feel better.
Then life happens. The weather turns. The school run returns. Your calendar fills up. Someone in the house starts coughing.
That is the real reason so many health resolutions fade. It is friction. The waiting, the travel, the time off work, the uncertainty about whether something is worth checking. A handful of small hurdles is often all it takes for a good plan to become, “I’ll do it next week.”
The numbers back up the mood. A YouGov survey found 19% of Britons plan to make New Year’s resolutions for 2026, and health sits at the top. Nearly a quarter of resolution-makers, 23%, say they want to get fit or exercise more. But follow-through is harder. YouGov also found that 38% of those who made resolutions for 2025 say they kept all of them.
There is also a timing problem. Habit research suggests routines take longer than most people expect to feel automatic. One widely cited study found a median of 66 days. That is over two months of showing up, including the days when January does not cooperate.
A better approach is simple. Reduce friction, not ambition. Make the next step smaller, closer, clearer, and resilient enough to survive winter bugs and busy weeks.
That is where Doctorcall Concierge Membership fits as a New Year’s resolution you can keep, because it is built into real life.
You simply do not have to go anywhere. When you need a GP, we come to your home.
Doctorcall has been delivering private GP care since 1989, with 24/7 home visits across London and phone and video consultations wherever you are. Concierge Membership gives you
ongoing GP support on standby all year, plus an annual at-home health check, so you can stay on top of things early instead of letting them drag on.

MAISON NAZANIN: Luxury Silk Scarves
Silk scarves are back in fashion, and never more so than for Valentine’s Day. Maison Nazanin is a new brand that launched in October last year, and there are some scarves in their range that would do very nicely as a Valentine gift.
Maison Nazanin was the result of a chance encounter between Nazanin Farahbod, a designer by profession who was born in Iran, moved to Italy and now lives in London, and Adam Bennett, an economist who was born in London but whose career spanned the globe. They met at the Tomorrow’s Tigers exhibition in London in 2022, and their shared love of art and history blossomed into friendship and led them to cofound Maison Nazanin as a celebration of Nazanin’s life story and Persian heritage.
Their scarves are printed in the UK on the finest pure silk, of different weaves appropriate to the size and design of their scarves. The designs in their inaugural collection are based on Persian miniatures, sometimes paintings, sometimes drawings, and sometimes illustrations for love poetry.
Lovers looking for romantic presents might be tempted by Lovers (left), 125 by 86 cm, printed on Habotai silk. This is Nazanin’s reinterpretation of a drawing dating from the early 17th Century (£360 including VAT and free shipping).
Alternatively, there are two beautiful love poems (£265 each). Khusrau and Shirin (above and lower left), 138 by 41 cm, tells the story of the love affair between King Khusrau II and Shirin that ends happily but only after a long and arduous journey (including intervening marriages to other people). It was written by the famous poet Nizami (1141–1209). A similar sized scarf (lower right) contains fragments of a poem by Jami (1414–1492).
Finally, for those with intense amorous thoughts in mind, there is Lovers embrace (opposite page), drawn by the greatest miniaturist of all time, Reza Abbasi (1565–1635). This scarf (shown opposite) is printed on pure Twill silk, 90 by 90 cm square (£280).
The range of scarves available from Maison Nazanin covers many themes, including love, war, mystery, art, and hunting, as well as more absract modern designs of Nazanin’s own creation. They come exquisitely packed and the poems include translations into English verse They are all available on maison-nazanin.com.
HAILEY BIEBER REIMAGINES ROMANCE FOR VICTORIA’S SECRET
VALENTINE’S CAMPAIGN
Victoria’s Secret sets the mood for the season of love with its 2026 Valentine’s Day campaign, fronted by global style icon Hailey Bieber. Titled A Very VS Valentine’s, the campaign delivers a fresh, fashion-forward take on romance – blending playful nostalgia with modern femininity in a way that feels perfectly attuned to today’s luxury consumer.
Shot in soft, intimate settings, the visuals showcase Bieber in a curated edit of lingerie, sleepwear, and Valentine’s gifting pieces. Classic silhouettes are refreshed with heart motifs, lace detailing, and satin finishes, while the colour palette moves effortlessly between signature reds, blush pinks, and creamy neutrals. The result is a collection that feels both seductive and wearable –designed to be styled as confidently at home as it is layered into everyday wardrobes.
One standout moment nods to Victoria’s Secret heritage, subtly referencing early-2000s campaign imagery while reworking it through a contemporary lens. Bieber’s relaxed confidence and understated glamour bring a sense of ease to the collection, reinforcing the brand’s continued evolution toward inclusivity and modern luxury.
Beyond lingerie, the Valentine’s offering extends into coordinating pyjamas, accessories, and fragrance mists, positioning the collection as a complete gifting destination. The campaign strikes a careful
balance between fantasy and functionality – a key reason it resonates so strongly with fashion-savvy audiences.
For London readers, A Very VS Valentine’s reflects a wider shift in luxury fashion and beauty: romance without excess, sensuality without cliché. With its refined styling, iconic casting, and timeless appeal, Victoria’s Secret’s latest campaign proves that Valentine’s dressing can be both playful and polished – and that modern love, like modern style, is all about confidence.

ITHE BLURRED MAKEUP TREND
n 2026, makeup has shifted away from heavy contour, sharp eyeliner, and overtly bold lips. The beauty world is embracing what experts are calling the blurred look, a soft-focus approach that enhances your features without masking them. Skin glows naturally, lips appear gently stained, and eyes are subtly defined without harsh edges. It is a look that feels editorial yet accessible, polished yet lived-in — perfect for London readers who appreciate elegance with an understated edge. What sets this trend apart is its emphasis on natural texture. Heavy powders and overly matte foundations are replaced with lightweight, glowy formulas that allow skin to breathe. Cream blushes, tinted serums, and skin tints provide a soft luminosity while evening tone and enhancing features. The result is a complexion that feels effortless, healthy, and fresh, creating the ultimate “skin, just better” effect. Layering is intentional but subtle: cheeks, lips, and eyes are harmonised for cohesion without precision that feels staged or artificial.
Lips are central to the blurred look. Instead of sharply defined lines or bold matte finishes,
makeup artists suggest soft washes of colour, applied with fingertips or a gentle brush. The goal is a natural, just-bitten effect that mirrors the appearance of real, lived-in lips. Cheeks echo these same tones for a harmonious, balanced look, while eyes are kept soft with neutral shadows and minimal mascara. Even highlighter is applied sparingly — just enough to enhance contours without overpowering the natural glow.
Eyes, too, are softened. Instead of thick eyeliner or dramatic smokey effects, muted shadows in taupe, rose, and soft browns frame the eye naturally. Mascara enhances lashes subtly, emphasizing definition without stark separation. The overall effect is approachable yet polished, editorial but wearable — a look that transitions effortlessly from a casual coffee meeting to evening drinks or a photoshoot. This versatility is a major reason the trend is rapidly gaining traction in fashion capitals like London, where beauty often reflects understated sophistication.

ACHIEVE THE BLURRED LOOK
RARE BEAUTY SOFT PINCH TINTED LIP OIL
Sheer, hydrating colour for naturally stained lips.
The blurred look is also about technique. Fingertips, soft brushes, and sponges are preferred over rigid tools for diffusing edges and blending pigments seamlessly. Makeup is applied in layers, with each element lightly built to avoid harsh lines. Cream-based blushes and balms allow colour to melt into skin rather than sit on top, and lips are blurred and patted rather than lined. Highlighters and illuminators are strategically placed on high points — cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and brow bones — to enhance dimension without shimmer overload. The philosophy is simple: enhancement over perfection, subtlety over statement.

This movement reflects a wider cultural shift in luxury beauty, particularly relevant in London. Modern consumers value authenticity, versatility, and effortless elegance over highly constructed or dramatic looks. The blurred makeup trend allows wearers to embrace imperfection, while still appearing polished and stylish. For busy professionals, fashion-conscious socialites, and
beauty editors alike, it offers a day-to-night look that is both practical and photogenic. Social media-friendly but not staged, it celebrates individuality and confidence in a way that feels attainable.
The trend’s rise has inspired brands to develop products specifically suited to the soft-focus aesthetic. From sheer lip oils to multi-use balms, lightweight foundations to luminous cream blushes, these tools make achieving the blurred look easy, even for those new to makeup. The focus is on products that blend effortlessly, layer seamlessly, and highlight natural radiance, all while allowing the wearer to personalize the look to their own features.

With more patients looking for procedures under local anaesthetic, Mr Sadri has seen a huge increase in demand for alar base reductions. Gone is the theatre, anaesthetists, and the woozy feeling after general anaesthetic. Instead you are ushered into a sparkling treatment room. It’s easy to see why local anaesthetic surgery is becoming so appealing.
For those unfamiliar, an alar base reduction is a minor procedure that narrows the width of the base of the nose. Mr Sadri begins by carefully anaesthetising the nose, (admittedly the most uncomfortable part) before making small incisions at the sides of the nostrils. A small amount of tissue is removed to refine the shape of the nostrils, bringing balance, symmetry, and overall facial harmony.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks to consider, and a thorough consultation is essential before deciding. It’s important to note that this technique only addresses the alar base, the lower outer part of the nostrils, so the bridge of the nose remains unchanged. The incisions are placed within the natural creases of the nose, meaning any scars are discreet. Mr Sadri’s reputation for meticulous stitching and a perfectionist’s attention to detail ensures every patient receives the same standard

There has to be a space of two weeks between your consultation and your surgery so that you can be sure of your decision to proceed with surgery. The healing process is quick and straightforward. No stiches need to be removed, as they are dissolvable, and minimal dressings are required. WOOD VS MARBLE: THE TABLE TOP GUIDE
The unique shapes and patterns provided by the natural world are the building blocks of furniture favourites found in every home. Fibres become our fabrics, sand becomes our glass, and most importantly (to me, dear reader) the myriad of marbles and timbers form our tables, big and small. Is there anything more beautiful than a table topped with intricately veined Calacatta, or the rich grain of an oak surface? But how do you choose between the two? Both are embodiments of design majesty, albeit for very different reasons.
What belongs where – and why does it belong there? What are the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between these material giants? Welcome to a heavyweight title fight: Wood vs Marble.
The big picture: Marble is synonymous with opulence. The palaces of antiquity were shaped by it, and modern spaces are not so different. Today, however, the material is used more internally than externally. It can be used to create truly unique, one-of-a-kind tables, with veins that can be traced through a seemingly indestructible surface; a kind of liquidity within the absolute. Meanwhile its wide variation of earthy finishes makes it a natural choice for countless settings: a master of standing out while fitting in. Marble is surprisingly versatile... for a rock.
On the other side, wood tables are the original. Picture Goldilocks and her porridge. Medieval dining halls. One thing in common: wood. Their desirability comes from natural warmth, the soothing patterns of the grain, and the familiarity of a timber dining table –something many of us grew up with at home.
Look and feel: The physical texture of both materials is solid, strong and supportive. Wood with its subtle, story-telling imperfections and natural tactility brings an instant sense of comfort to a room. Marble by contrast is cool to the touch not just to the eye.
It’s what these materials evoke that truly sets them apart. Wood’s organic character offers a welcoming charm as you enter a space, as if inviting you to take a seat at the table or set down your Earl Grey. Marble, on the other hand, is sleek and dynamic, perfectly suited to moments that call for something a little more eye-catching.
“Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential”
Durability: “Solid as a rock,” as the old saying goes, marble is one of nature’s most durable materials. Highly resistant to temperature changes and capable of withstanding a significant amount of force, standing strong against the thrills and spills of a busy household – unless, of course, you’re holding a glass of wine. Depending on whether it has been pre-sealed, marble is incredibly porous, readily absorbing certain liquids that can leave rings or stains. Coasters, therefore, are an absolute must when entertaining. Or drinking alone. We don’t judge.
Wood, while lacking the innate strength of marble, is far more forgiving if something does go wrong. Scratches and chips are considerably easier to repair and for many the natural wear and tear of everyday use develops something that looks better nowhere else than on timber: character.
Ethical Consumption: As with the manufacture and transportation of anything in the modern world, both marble and wood come with environmental drawbacks. Because both are naturally occurring commodities, we have to look a little deeper than usual. Marble is generally less ecologically impactful to manufacture, but it is non-renewable and—unlike trees—cannot be regrown (not unless you’re prepared to wait a few eons). As such, it must be cared for with absolute diligence to ensure longevity.
Wood, while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our
ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential.
The answer? Shop brands with clearly defined eco-policies – those that make a genuine, vested effort to leave the planet better for having been part of their process. Look for commitments to tree replacement or CO2 reduction, and manufacturers that provide aftercare guidance to extend the lifespan of each piece. Brands such as Gubi and Audo are excellent examples of these principles in practice.
Maintenance: One of the more closely matched categories in this comparison: both materials require a certain level of TLC. To maintain the prestigious look they offer, it’s best to use pHneutral cleaners that won’t damage delicate surfaces. As mentioned previously, sealed marble provides far greater protection from the thrills and spills of a busy household, however, care is more about prevention than cure. Coasters and mats are an essential accessory.
Wood, on the other hand, is more forgiving. Surface-level scratches can be sanded out, a leg can be replaced, and a fresh layer of finish can be applied breathing new life into what may one day be considered a family heirloom. We’d also recommend a weekly wipedown and limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for certain timbers, helping to prevent bleaching over time.

THE DESIGN DIRECTION DEFINING HOMES THIS YEAR
As we enter 2026, interiors are becoming more intentional, expressive and rooted in how we actually live. Homes are no longer styled for perfection, but designed for feeling. Spaces that invite you to slow down, host more freely and surround yourself with pieces that feel personal.
One of the most defining shifts is the continued move towards soft, sculptural design, embodied through Cult Furniture’s latest collection on offer. Curved sofas, rounded armchairs and cocooning silhouettes bring comfort and ease to living spaces, balancing visual impact with everyday practicality. These forms feel reassuring and relaxed, making rooms more inviting without sacrificing style.
Colour palettes are evolving too. Rather than stark contrasts or overly minimal schemes, 2026 embraces layered neutrals with warmth and depth - think speckled stone, soft cappuccino and earthy reds and greens. These grounding shades create calm interiors while
allowing texture and form to shine. Tactile fabrics like bouclé, velvet and textured weaves add richness, making furniture as inviting to touch as it is to look at.
In contrast, chrome and high-gloss finishes are making a confident return. Polished metals, glossy surfaces and lacquered details introduce light and energy, working beautifully alongside softer upholstery and organic shapes. This balance of softness and shine is key to interiors that feel both warm and elevated.
There’s also a renewed appreciation for design with history. Vintage and 70s influences continue to shape modern homes through lowprofile seating, statement dining chairs and silhouettes reimagined with contemporary materials to feel timeless rather than trend-driven.
As homes take on multiple roles, from everyday living to entertaining, furniture needs to adapt. Cult’s flexible seating, extendable dining tables and versatile accent pieces allow spaces to evolve effortlessly.
At Cult, these trends are translated into designled furniture that feels iconic yet accessible. And right now, refreshing your dining space is even easier. Build a complete seating set with Buy One, Get One Half Price on dining chairs, bar stools and kitchen stools using code SECONDHALF. Pair it with a statement table and enjoy an extra 20% off dining tables with code EXTRA20, then finish with free delivery using HOUSEFEB.
Because great interiors aren’t about following rules, they’re about creating spaces that feel lived in, loved and unmistakably your own. cultfurniture.com

WILLIAM WOOD:
A NEW ERA OF INTERIORS
There’s a quiet shift happening in UK homes. We’re moving away from the disposable, the overly uniform, the forgettable and returning to pieces that feel intentional. Furniture that holds presence. Design that has a point of view. And interiors that reflect how we want to live now: slower, calmer, and more connected to nature.
At William Wood, this is exactly where we sit. Known for statement mirrors and luxury furniture, William Wood has become a go-to for those who want their spaces to feel elevated without feeling untouchable. It’s a brand that understands the modern home isn’t just somewhere you live, it’s somewhere you retreat, reset, host, create, and sometimes simply exhale. Each piece is designed to add impact, while still feeling timeless enough to live with for years.
The brand’s signature lies in balancing bold design with a refined aesthetic: sculptural forms, rich textures, and a careful attention to proportion. Mirrors remain at the heart of the collection, from oversized, architectural designs that bring instant drama to a space, to softly curved silhouettes that add light and calm. But William Wood has evolved far beyond mirrors alone, with furniture collections that allow customers to build a home with continuity, character, and intent.
Recent launches have leaned into this evolution. New arrivals have introduced more experimental shapes and finishes, wavy edges, irregular curves, organic lines - a clear nod to a future where interiors are less rigid and more expressive. The result is a collection that feels current, but never trendchasing: pieces that make a statement without shouting.
This year, William Wood is also placing a renewed

focus on one of the most influential design movements emerging across interiors: biophilic design.
More than a buzzword, biophilic design reflects a growing desire to reconnect with the natural world through our spaces - especially in cities like London, where the pace is fast and the outside world can feel relentless. It’s about more than adding plants to a room. It’s the use of natural textures, soft light, organic shapes, grounding tones, and materials that create a sensory calm. Think rippled wood grains, stone-inspired finishes, earthy palettes, and silhouettes that mimic nature rather than straight lines.
William Wood’s approach to biophilic design is rooted in craftsmanship and mood. A side table with a fluid, wave-like edge. A coffee table with a softened form that feels carved rather than manufactured. A mirror that echoes the shape of water or a landscape horizon. These are pieces designed not just to fill a space, but to change how it feels to be in it.
The brand’s latest push is also driven by how people are shopping and styling now. Customers are curating “moments” within their home - a reading nook, a hallway statement, a softly lit corner that feels like an escape and William Wood designs with those scenes in mind. It’s the art of turning everyday living into something more considered.
Ultimately, William Wood stands for modern luxury that doesn’t feel cold. For design that makes an impression, but still invites you in. And for homes that reflect not just personal style, but personal wellbeing.
Because the future of interiors isn’t just about what looks goodit’s about what makes us feel good, too. williamwoodmirrors.co.uk

Corinne, CEO of Tailored Curtains, says: “Intrigued by beautifully dressed windows from a young age, they are always the first thing I notice when I enter a room; they are very tactile and can change the feel and atmosphere of a space completely.
I made my first pair of self-taught curains with traditional swags and tails at the age of 13. The pink satin drapes were such a big hit, Mum then commissioned me to dress all the windows in the house, followed by my many aunties.
This was when I realised my passion and my journey began, so you could say I’ve made curtains my whole life.
With the huge demand for bespoke curtains, it’s a great investment in finest top quality, not only are curtains functional helping to keep out the cold and cutting down on those energy bills in the winter months, you’ll also have something beautiful that will last a lifetime.”

Tailored Curtains Best Bespoke Handmade Curtain Design Company - London
LAURENCE MCINTOSH
Set within a historic country house in the North East of Scotland, this beautifully curved library has been designed to sit naturally within its architectural surroundings. The piece responds sensitively to the character of the building, drawing on traditional proportions and craftsmanship to create a space that feels both established and enduring.
Working to a design by architects GLM, the team at Laurence McIntosh brought the vision to life through a considered and collaborative process. With a deep understanding of traditional joinery, each element was crafted to complement the architecture of the room, from the gentle sweep of the curved shelving to the fine detailing that gives the library its balance and refinement. The result is joinery that enhances the space without drawing undue attention to itself.
The completed library offers warmth, elegance and a quiet sense of grandeur. Carefully selected materials and a restrained palette allow the craftsmanship to speak for itself, creating an environment that invites both use and reflection. Every detail has been shaped with longevity in mind, ensuring the library will continue to serve the house for generations to come.
A discreet yet striking feature of the project is a concealed door, seamlessly integrated within the shelving to maintain the visual rhythm of the room. Hidden in plain sight, the opening mechanism is activated by a carefully chosen book, positioned among the volumes to appear entirely at home. A simple pull sets the mechanism in motion, revealing what lies beyond.
Behind the scenes, modern engineering supports
the illusion. A fully electric concealed opening system, combined with a timed closing mechanism, allows the door to operate with precision and subtlety. The movement is smooth and controlled, ensuring that functionality enhances rather than disrupts the overall design.
This project stands as a testament to the value of thoughtful collaboration between architect and maker. It demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship, paired with contemporary innovation, can produce work that is both timeless and quietly distinctive. Above all, it reflects Laurence McIntosh’s enduring commitment to joinery that respects its setting, serves its purpose, and is crafted to last. laurencemcintosh.co.uk
Design has become central to how we furnish our homes and organise everyday life because it shapes not just what we see, but how we feel and behave within a space. Nowhere is this more evident than in the bathroom. Once considered a purely functional room, it has evolved into a place of wellbeing, individuality and quiet ritual. Few collaborations have influenced this transformation as profoundly as the 30-year partnership between AXOR and Philippe Starck.
For design to truly influence culture, it must capture a moment in time—a need, a new function, a shift in mindset. That requires exceptional designers with vision and instinct, alongside brands with the courage to act on those ideas. Philippe Starck and AXOR represent exactly that union. From the very beginning, their work challenged conventions, reimagining the bathroom not as a hidden utility, but as a living space.
In 1994, Starck introduced the radical concept of the Salon d’Eau—the “water living room”. Daylight replaced tiles, natural materials softened the space, and the AXOR Starck collection became a defining feature. The idea was simple yet revolutionary: the bathroom could be somewhere you wanted to be. This philosophy continues to underpin AXOR’s approach today—designing not just objects, but entire spaces, and rethinking how people interact with water.
Starck’s work with AXOR has consistently balanced beauty, innovation and responsibility. From the ergonomic efficiency of AXOR
“For design to truly influence culture, it must capture a moment in time”
Starck Organic to the poetic minimalism of AXOR Starck V, which celebrates water itself as the hero, each collection reflects a deep respect for resources. For Starck and AXOR, saving water should never feel like a compromise, but an upgrade to the experience. This iconic collaboration can be discovered locally through The Bath Works, with showrooms in Poole, New Milton and Southbourne. The Southbourne showroom is particularly special, featuring the AXOR Starck range on display alongside a fully working AXOR shower and tap installation—allowing visitors to experience the design, performance and sensory quality first-hand.
Together, AXOR and Philippe Starck continue to prove that great design is timeless, purposeful and deeply human—created not just for today, but for a lifetime.
