The Colchester Castle Summer Series is set to make a grand debut, bringing an unforgettable open-air concert experience to one of England’s most historic venues. It’s not very often you would expect to find a seafood stall, located deep in the forest, particularly one of such quality, but we’re rather glad we did! The shack is now in its 6th year of trading has struck up quite a reputation amongst the West Essex locals, dog walkers and even drawing an inner London crowd, who are venturing out from suburbia for a day in the woods centred around a fishy feast. Kevin McCloud will be back for a completely overhauled Grand Designs Live, returning in a brandnew format to London ExCeL. To succeed, they must gather essential ingredients and craft a cure before time runs out. Equipped with

only their wits and the ‘Orb of Interaction’ – participants will embark on an exhilarating journey through stunning biomes in search of vital resources. The 45-minute adventure begins in the forest, where guests are introduced to Tobin and Dayo, two unique characters who guide them through the experience. As they progress into the village, they receive their mission and set off on a dynamic rescue quest alongside fellow Minecrafters. Along the way, adventurers will navigate multiple Minecraft biomes, collect resources, and interact with a variety of iconic mobs—some friendly, others far less so. From pandas and dolphins to skeletons, spiders, and the infamous creepers, every encounter adds to the excitement. Upon completing their mission, players can commemorate their journey at the Minecraft Experience Trading Post, where exclusive keepsakes from the adventure await. The shack is now in its 6th year of trading has struck up quite a reputation amongst the West Essex locals, dog walkers and even drawing an inner London crowd, who are venturing out from suburbia for a day in the woods centred around a fishy feast. Oyster Shack & Seafood Bar itself is an open kitchen, with a daily display counter full of fresh offerings to tempt you with. Serving a selection of the finest oysters from around the British Isles, along with all the usual local seafood you would expect find at a seafood stall, they also offer a delicious hot food, tapas style menu and a list of fresh daily specials. Tucking into a very tasty bacon and scallop roll, we sat back and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of this buzzing little eatery. Enough to cater for 50 guests under cover, with the addition of a sun terrace with further seating we could understand why this has become such a popular hidden gem. With a cafe next door serving chips and soft drinks and a pub serving alcohol, looking out across an incredible view it seems they have all aspects covered. We spoke to several members of this very friendly team who introduced us to Steve Cook, a local restauranteur who runs the Oyster Shack. He explained how things have developed from the

start, with daily early morning trips to Billingsgate Fish Market. “My day starts at 4am with a drive to the market and load up with a nice selection of the freshest fish and seafood we could find. It’s always exciting up there, and great for a chef to have such an array of produce to chose from. Our aim was always to keep things as local as possible, but as fresh as could be. If the seafood and fish is of quality, that’s most of our work done.” After a year or two of early starts and long days he was lucky enough to meet Maurice. “I text him every night now with my order, and he delivers the following morning. He has become my eyes and nose for the market. Working at the very centre of the market himself for years, he knows exactly what’s coming in from the boats and what’s available. He’s invaluable to us and instrumental in our quality. Thank you Mo!” Steve added “it’s great to have such direct contact and feedback from our guests. Some of our clients have become real friends, and I’m very lucky to have acquired such a dedicated great team of professionals working with me. It’s really satisfying and has been great fun” If seafood and oysters are your thing, then this little secret shack should surely be on your radar if you haven’t already joined the weekend queues. CERAMIC POPPIES RETURN TO THE
TOWER OF LONDON
To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Opens from 6 May 2025

rom May to November 2025, the Tower of London will unveil a new display of ceramic poppies to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The new installation will use poppies from the acclaimed 2014 artwork, ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’, which saw the Tower encircled by a ‘sea’ of poppies becoming a site for remembrance visited by over 5 million people. Nearly 30,000 poppies from the original installation, on loan from Imperial War Museums’ collection, will return to the Tower to form a new display. The new display will resemble a ‘wound’ at the heart of the Tower, which was itself bombed during the Blitz and still bears some of those scars today. Poppies will pour across the lawn where the blood-red flowers will form a crater, with ripples flowing outwards. The installation will create striking images, reminding us of the sacrifice and loss of war, and of the long-lasting impact of conflict. anguish of suffering and loss. We hope that this new display will provide an opportunity to reflect on the impact of war not just on military personnel, but Londoners and people across the country.” The Tower suffered heavy aerial bombardment during the Blitz, alongside the rest of East London. At the end of the War, the fortress was floodlit, as a beacon of hope for a new beginning, but the shadow of loss hung over its VE Day festivities. Marking this loss is of deep importance to the Tower’s resident community, many of whom are veterans themselves. The display will open on 6 May, in advance of the 80th anniversary of VE Day - which marks the official end of the Second World War in Europe – on 8 May. It will run through VJ Day until 11 November, culminating in a moment of remembrance for Armistice Day. laridge’s has announced that it will open Claridge’s Bakery in late summer 2025 with internationally acclaimed chef and baker, Richard Hart, named as Executive Baker & Creative Director. Launching with a British-focused menu of beloved classics including Bloomers and Granary Loaves, as well as Jam Tarts, Custard Tarts, Belgian Buns, Iced Fingers, and more, as well as Hart’s globally renowned sourdough breads. The bakery will be located on Brook’s Mews, Mayfair, and sell delicious treats and goods straight from the ovens, with the sole aim of celebrating the art of British baking. With delicacies available throughout the day, the menu will be created by Hart and take inspiration from Richard’s London upbringing and love and nostalgia for classic British bakeries, as well as Claridge’s own heritage. The opening of Claridge’s Bakery marks Richard Hart’s much anticipated return to the UK, building on decades of travels and work across the globe, from San Francisco to Copenhagen and Mexico City. HURTWOOD HOUSE THE PERFECT BRIDGE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY
H
urtwood House, famous for its creativity and the likes of Hans Zimmer, Emily Blunt and Harry Lawtey, has an unusual history. ‘You must be crazy,’ friends told Richard Jackson in 1970, when he set out to create a new approach to A level education. He envisioned a magical school which students could change to after their GCSEs which would provide a completely different experience from what he perceived in those days as the dullness of the traditional public school system. After Cambridge and a successful career in advertising, Richard and his wife Linda arrived at Leith Hill Place, a ramshackle mansion in the Surrey Hills, leased from the National Trust. When the doors opened with just 17 students the equipment consisted of a Remington typewriter and a child’s blackboard! The house lacked any formal teaching space, but fulfilled Richards’s brief of a ‘school that didn’t look like a school or smell like one’. Domestic and financial logistics fell to Linda’s expertise, while Richard taught and recruited staff and students, who were on first-name terms. Mutual respect was central, constructive feedback

was weekly and the atmosphere was that of a supportive extended family where everyone found themselves working as hard as they were playing. There was delicious home-cooked food and dogs completing the informal picture. Little has changed in the ethos of the school over the decades since; the scale, however, has developed and now it is an internationally recognised powerhouse of 350 students, built on the twin pillars of creativity and academic rigour, the perfect bridge between school and university. The first key move was in 1974 when, Richard acquired Hurtwood House itself, recognising the potential of its gracious limed-oak beauty. There was now the space to expand and Richard set about finding appropriately brilliant staff. Numbers grew, and Hurtwood colonised the Surrey Hills: acquiring a remarkable portfolio of grand boarding houses – ‘home from home’ for successive generations of students. The 1980s brought fundamental change with the arrival of the Hurtwood Theatre. Richard realised how Drama could galvanise students, demanding mutual co-operation and personal responsibility alongside creativity and having fun. ‘Build it and they will come’, he was told. They did, and they still do, along with a stream of superb practitioners from every area of the creative arts. Hurtwood had found its unique beating heart and the school buzzed with the stream of amazing productions (everything from glorious Christmas musicals to Greek tragedy by way of Shakespeare and cutting-edge contemporary plays). heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE CELEBRATES HISTORIC GIRLS’ FOOTBALL SUCCESS

his March, St Dunstan’s College, Catford, London, was delighted to celebrate historic success in girls’ football with two senior teams reaching national finals and a junior squad winning their local tournament. In the senior school, two teams have reached national finals marking a new chapter of sporting success for south London’s award-winning school. St Dunstan’s year 9/10 girls’ team have reached the final of the U15 ISFA Shield, a prestigious national competition for independent schools. The journey for the girls started back in September. Along the way, St Dunstan’s have had to overcome tough competition with matches against Wellington College, Chigwell School,
Colfe’s School and then a semi-final in Southampton to take on the Gregg School. The semi final resulted in a fantastic 4-0 win for the girls earning them a place in the ISFA final, against Stephen Perse Foundation. Meanwhile, the year 7/8 girls’ team have also had a great cup run which resulted in them reaching the final of the U13 Girls’ ISFA Cup. On route, St Dunstan’s girls have had to overcome City of London Girls School, Highgate School, Ardingly College and Wimbledon High School before beating favourites Surbiton High in the semi-final after a tense penalty shoot-out. Both teams are now preparing for their finals, which take place in the next few weeks. St Dunstan’s Head of Football, Paul Palmer,

The football success comes just over a year after St Dunstan’s announced a groundbreaking partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation. As part of the partnership, Chelsea FC Foundation now have a full-time officer based at the school to develop the new programme working closely with the St Dunstan’s team and to reach out and build relationships across Lewisham. Five key things to think about when choosing your child’s nursery GOT AN ALMOST 2-YEAR-OLD WHO IS READY FOR NURSERY? THEN YOU’LL KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT CAN BE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT OFFERINGS. HERE ARE 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICE: 1. Invest time in choosing wisely here: 0-5 really matters! If you are going to invest in your child’s education and have limited means, this is a key stage that warrants taking the time to choose the right education setting. Why? Neuroscience reveals that more neural pathways are formed during this time than any other time in your child’s brain forming important life-long brain foundations. Did you also know that learning done through play builds brains faster than any other method? Research suggests around 10 times better than other methods and also produces better cognitive, social, and emotional development. In terms of requirements of the job market of 2035 and beyond analysis shows that creativity, empathy and collaboration are key skills that will be needed for the future. All these skills are reinforced through play. 2. Fully outdoor forest school vs indoor nurseries that hold forest sessions a few hours a week: The data is clear when it comes to early years education - the more children spend time outdoors the better it is for their confidence, powers of concentration and development. Some parents have a fear of forest schools throughout the winter and what children would do in continuous rain and snow. The age-old saying is that there is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing. Most outdoor forest schools should have indoor spaces that can be used in the event of severe bad and adverse weather conditions. 3. Reflect on your child’s education after nursery: Would you be willing to commit to a certain type of education all the way? Or would you like to make sure that your child attends a hybrid model, which brings the best of forest school and creative 98 APRIL 2025
approaches but also does not give them a disconnect from modern and community life? 4. “It takes a village to raise a child”. Stay mindful of this in the context of your child’s education as well: Children feel safe and rooted where they feel part of a community. This also relates to the famous Psychologist Maslow’s hierarchy of needs chart. He described the sense of belonging to the community as essential to self-esteem and development. Choose a nursery/preschool with good links to the local schools and community. Are children inspired to learn and be part of the community? How many local visits happen to support this? Make note of these social relationships because they matter. How connected are the parents to the setting? Are there family gatherings to support the parent, nursery and teacher community? 5. See the environment “as the third teacher” and pay attention to the staff/child ratio: Focus on spaces that are innovative and peaceful that can give your child a “ home away from home” experience. What feeling do you get when you walk in? Child to staff ratios matter as it means your children will get the specialist focus time they need to feel seen, validated, supported and to have their development stage understood properly and then extended. In an exciting development for the future of female swimming, Talbot Heath is on the cusp of becoming the premier choice for young female athletes across the UK. The school has earned its reputation for its dedication to academic and athletic excellence through its Tennis Academy and its Swimming Academy over the last five years since its modern 6 x 25m pool was unveiled. With the launch of its own Talbot Heath Swimming Club later in 2025, it aims to take the lead in nurturing the next generation of female swimmers. With spring’s unpredictable weather, sticking to a triedand-true formula becomes routine. But having a formula doesn’t mean boring. Whether you’re sporting navyand-white-striped Breton tees or taking inspiration from Gucci’s sorbet-coloured cardigans, fashion experts go through the best way to style stripes this season. Invest in the staples While some striped trends come and go, investing in staple stripes is essential for elevating your outfits year after year. The classic navy and white combo is sported time and again by the likes of Sienna Miller and the Princess of Wales. While a slim fit is timeless, more oversized styles are in this season, thanks to the ‘fisherman aesthetic’. “This influence of ‘fisherman style’ means stripes are less polished and more effortless [this season], often paired with oversized silhouettes, half-tucked tops, and relaxed tailoring,” explains fashion expert and celebrity stylist Oriona Robb. Go big with colour This season, designers are experimenting with a more maximalist approach to stripes, combining juxtaposing yellows and blues to statement pieces. “Colour-wise, it’s about playful combos,” says Robb. While nautical navy and whites are still in the mix, “powder blue and butter yellow are big this season” explains fashion expert Karine Laudort, “along with sage green and cream. Red and cream stripes are also having a major moment,” says Robb, “adding a Parisian-chic touch to any outfit.” You can channel this with a roll neck, barrel jeans and shades – or opt for a more preppy and polished look with a buttoned cardigan and pleated skirt. Pair with denim There’s no greater match than stripes and denim, but 108 APRIL 2025
this doesn’t mean navy white and blue. Colourful stripes with ecru jeans – or muted stripes with khaki denim are great ways to mix print and texture. If you’re looking for something lighter than denim, then linen and cream tones are a perfect pairing. “A striped top with cream linen trousers or a beige blazer brings a chic and polished touch,” says Laudort. “Otherwise for an edgier look, stripes contrast beautifully with the richness of a suede skirt or leather boots, balancing casual and luxe.” Don’t dismiss accessories Suede continues to be big this season, and a slouchy suede bag or boat shoes can elevate any striped tee and denim jean combo. If you’re wanting to lean into colourful stripes, swap your white trainers out for metallic pumps to make the look that much more interesting. Just like a vegan diet, vegan beauty includes products that avoid anything that has been tested on animals or contains animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, gelatine, honey or squalene. “[Vegan] products are often created with cruelty-free principles, supporting ethical practices in the beauty industry,” explains co-founder of Odylique, Abi Weeds. “Vegan skincare works for all skin types [and] is packed with natural moisturisers, such as aloe vera and shea butter for hydration, alongside calming ingredients like tea tree oil and chamomile which reduce inflammation,” explains BEAUTY BAY‘s beauty expert Grace Ferns. “Mature skin also benefits from antioxidant-rich formulas found in vegan products, which also help to combat ageing,” she claims.

How to tell if a product is vegan
Identifying whether your beauty product is vegan or not is quick and easy. The Vegan Society suggest looking out for a logo certification, such as the vegan trademark, which guarantees the product is free from animal ingredients and has not been tested on animals. These trademarks can look different, whether they come from Vegan Action, Cruelty Free International, PETA or Choose Cruelty Free. Familiarising yourself with these logos will help your determine which products are vegan and non-vegan.

When it comes to swapping more mainstream products for vegan beauty, some claim the benefits outweigh the cons. According to Weeds: “Vegan beauty products often contain fewer synthetic chemicals and harsh irritants, resulting in kinder formulations for the skin.” “Vegan skincare products are usually rich in antioxidants, botanicals and vitamins. Toms wife Dove gave Clive his last Fez for good luck with his shows. Clive was also asked by English Heritage to unveil a blue plaque outside Tom’s house in West London, which was featured on TV. Amongst his many performances were for Sir Anthony Hopkins at the unveiling of Toms 9ft statue in Caerphilly and for the Tommy Cooper Society, with Tom’s daughter Vickie and the remainder of Tom’s family in the audience. Clive, who is raising funds to train people to become Laughter-Yoga facilitators, has the suit that Tommy is wearing in the picture with the Queen. This is coming up for auction later in the year, along with a whole collection of Tom’s personal items and magic tricks.

I
n the current climate emergency Architects have a responsibility to start specifying materials that are sustainable and offer additional solutions for clients. Our Hemp House is a rear addition that is simple in form borrowing from the pitched roofs of the existing home. The extension was built in timber and hempcrete - a bio-base material that absorbs and stores significant quantities of CO2 through its production. It is ‘breathable” and chemical free making it a great fit for the family. The hempcrete is exposed internally and set against timber in areas that require a more robust finish. It’s lit by generous roof lights and fixed to an exposed timber structure. We used large scale samples to test the material, construction and finishes. At our Supper Time project we used a natural clay plaster externally and internally to create a warm, inviting atmosphere, while large openings and skylights introduce abundant natural light, enhancing the sense of connection to the outdoors. Natural clay plasters are more sustainable than gypsum plaster and paint, they are non-toxic, with low VOC emissions and no synthetic, concrete or lime additives. Clay plasters are the most sustainable wall finishes available. They allow buildings to breathe, attenuate acoustics and help regulate humidity and temperature. At Cork House, shortlisted for the AJ awards, we used cork to clad a new addition both externally and internally. Cork is a sustainable material, naturally water resistant, recyclable and will weather to a silver-grey colour over time. It has inherent insulating properties which meant we did not require any

additional insulation on the external walls. It performs thermally as well, if not better, than expanded foam. Cork is breathable, free from chemicals, synthetic resins and carcinogenic materials and creates a healthy environment inside the house. When using natural materials, it is important to make sure these can also satisfy regulatory and practical requirements. It’s important to have a good team who can steer you through these challenges including a good Building Control Officer and other consultants, such as a structural engineer, to ensure the materials are fit for purpose. J
uggling motherhood, a growing business, and planning a wedding is not for the faint-hearted. As a working mum in the interior design industry, I find myself constantly balancing the demands of clients, family, and my own aspirations. There are days when I feel like I’m conquering the world and others when I wonder if I’m barely keeping my head above water. But through the chaos, I’ve learned that resilience, passion, and a solid support system are the key ingredients to making it all work. After taking a step back from my business to focus on my family, I’m now rebuilding it with fresh energy and determination. Interior design is more than just a job for me; it’s an extension of who I am. The ability to transform spaces and bring a client’s vision to life is a privilege I never take for granted. However, growing a business, particularly in a competitive industry, is a challenge that requires both creativity and strategic planning. Some days, I’m sketching design concepts at the dining table while my daughter plays next to me; other days, I’m answering client emails in between wedding planning calls, in the office. The journey hasn’t been without its struggles. Mum guilt is real – there are moments when I feel torn between deadlines and spending quality time with my daughter. The pressure to be everything to everyone can be overwhelming. But I’ve realised that perfection is a myth. Accepting that some days will be harder than others

has been freeing. I’ve also learned to embrace help – whether that means delegating business tasks, leaning on family for childcare, or simply taking a deep breath and letting go of things that aren’t urgent (this has particularly helped). Planning a wedding amidst all this has added another layer of busyness, but it’s also been a beautiful reminder of what truly matters. Love, family, and the joy of creating a future together make every sleepless night and stressful moment worth it. The skills I use in interior design – organisation, attention to detail, and creativity – have come in handy in planning our big day. For other working mums trying to do it all, my advice is this: give yourself grace. Success isn’t measured by having a perfectly curated life (especially when it looks like it on social media), but by finding fulfilment in the journey. Build a strong support network, set boundaries, and make time for yourself, even if it’s just a quiet cup of tea in the morning. Most importantly, celebrate the small wins – because every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory. Life is a balancing act, and while it may never be perfect, it can still be beautiful.
