Would you trust AI with your Will?
Why

this digital shortcut could cost your loved ones

While the idea may feel modern and convenient, AI-generated Wills can carry significant risks often only discovered after death, when it is too late to fix them easily. As more people turn to technology to manage their personal affairs, it is worth pausing to consider whether speed and simplicity are worth the potential adverse consequences?

Why this digital shortcut could cost your loved

ones

While the idea may feel modern and convenient, AIgenerated Wills can carry significant risks often only discovered after death, when it is too late to fix them easily. As more people turn to technology to manage their personal affairs, it is worth pausing to consider whether speed and simplicity are worth the potential adverse consequences?

Do

you need a solicitor to make a Will?

Using a solicitor comes with important safeguards. They are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must stay up to date with changes in the law, keep detailed records of client instructions and follow strict professional standards.

Perhaps most importantly, a solicitor provides tailored advice. Your Will is not just a document, it is a reflection of your family circumstances, financial arrangements, business interests and future planning. A solicitor can help ensure that all of these factors are properly considered.

What’s the problem with AI-generated Wills?

Artificial intelligence is still a relatively new tool and even within the legal profession it has had its share of high-profile missteps. There have been instances where AI systems have misapplied laws entirely. Despite this, many people place a high level of trust in AI-generated content. The difficulty is that if you do not already understand how a Will should be drafted, you are unlikely to spot errors or omissions. Common risks associated with AI-drafted Wills include non-compliance with the law in England and Wales, tax-inefficient estate planning, unclear or ambiguous wording, and a failure to take account of personal circumstances. This might include blended families, business assets, overseas property or the possibility of claims being brought against the estate.

AI also cannot assess whether the person making the Will has testamentary capacity or is being unduly influenced, both of which can be crucial issues in contentious probate disputes. Without a professional involved, there is no independent evidence that these matters were considered at the time the Will was made.

Even seemingly minor technical errors can have serious consequences. For example, a Will that is not signed or witnessed correctly may be invalid altogether. These mistakes are far more likely when a Will is prepared without professional guidance.

Can mistakes be fixed after death?

In many cases, mistakes in Wills are only discovered once the person making the Will has died. At that point, the option of simply preparing a new Will which corrects the mistake is no longer available. While beneficiaries may be able to agree a variation to address certain issues, this is not always possible, particularly where children, vulnerable beneficiaries, or disputes between family members are involved.

In some limited circumstances, courts can rectify mistakes in Wills caused by clerical errors or a failure to properly reflect the testator’s instructions. This process relies heavily on evidence, such as attendance notes and records of advice given. With AI-generated Wills, that evidence does not exist, making rectification far more difficult.

There is also no option to bring a negligence claim where a homemade or AI-generated Will causes financial loss. Any consequences are therefore borne entirely by the estate and the beneficiaries.

A worthwhile investment

Having a Will professionally drafted is a worthwhile investment. It offers peace of mind that your wishes are legally sound and reassurance that, if errors do occur, your loved ones are protected. If you have concerns about a Will, B P Collins’ contentious probate team can help. Please email enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995. www.bpcollins.co.uk

Small Wonders, Big Smiles Why Bekonscot Model Village Is the Perfect Day Out

There’s something wonderfully reassuring about places that feel timeless, where curiosity isn’t just encouraged — it’s practically built into every tiny house and model railway track.

Bekonscot Model Village in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, is one such place: an enchanting miniature world that’s been captivating visitors of all ages since 1929, making it the oldest original model village in the world, and a perfect choice for a truly memorable day out.

Wandering through Bekonscot feels a bit like stepping into a 1930s time warp, only you’re giant-sized. Across 1.5 acres of exquisitely maintained gardens, you’ll find intricately detailed model buildings, bustling tiny towns, and even miniature people going about their very small lives. From charming high street scenes and whimsical shops to castles, farms, docks and a bustling airport, there’s a delightful sense of discovery around every corner.

But Bekonscot isn’t just about looking — it’s about experiencing. The sprawling model railway network is one of the site’s greatest draws: a Gauge 1 railway with almost ten scale miles of track running through the villages, complete with working signal boxes and stations that delight both train enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. And for those who want a different perspective, the 7¼” narrow-gauge ride-on light railway offers fun shuttle rides around the grounds, a miniature adventure in its own right.

What makes Bekonscot especially appealing is how it balances nostalgia with playful detail. Whether you’re spotting witty shop names, discovering tiny animals in the village zoo, or watching trains swoop under bridges and around tunnels, there’s always a new scene to take in.

Gardens here aren’t just a backdrop, they’re part of the magic, with thousands of carefully shaped shrubs and trees enhancing the scale and atmosphere of the tiny world below.

It’s also an ideal choice for families. Little ones will love the sense of exploration, spotting hidden gems, chasing the trains, and soaking up imaginative corners, while adults often find themselves enchanted by the craft and creativity on display. With thoughtful touches like accessible pathways, picnic spots, tearooms, and seasonal activities ranging from magicians to birds of prey demonstrations, Bekonscot keeps everyone entertained and comfortable throughout the day.

Part of Bekonscot’s appeal is its blend of nostalgia and storytelling. These miniature towns, many inspired by real English villages, capture a snapshot of life from a bygone era, but with a whimsical twist that invites laughter and exploration, rather than museum-quiet reflection. It’s a place to stroll slowly, take in the details, and reconnect with a playful sense of wonder.

“Part of Bekonscot’s appeal is its blend of nostalgia and storytelling. These miniature towns, many inspired by real English villages, capture a snapshot of life from a bygone era”

Beyond the models themselves, Bekonscot has a rich story of its own. What started as a private hobby in the 1920s grew into a public attraction that has welcomed millions of visitors over the decades, inspiring writers, artists and generations of families. There’s an enduring charm in knowing that when you visit here, you’re stepping into a slice of cultural history that’s as uniquely British as a double-decker bus, just very, very small.

In a world where many attractions blur together, Bekonscot stands out because it invites pause. It encourages visitors to slow down, bend a little to peer more closely, and smile at the joy of discovery. Whether it’s a family outing, a weekend escape with friends, or a nostalgic trip down memory lane, this miniature village proves that sometimes the best days out are the ones that let you see the world, even if only at a fraction of the size.

IThe Antique Collective

n recent months, silver has quietly returned to the spotlight. Not with the fanfare of gold or the spectacle of gemstones, but through something far more familiar: the everyday objects many of us already own.

At The Antique Collective, we see silver in all its forms come through the shop each week — from inherited cutlery and candlesticks to teapots, cigarette cases and small personal items that have been tucked away in drawers for decades. Often, the story is the same: “I wasn’t sure if this was worth anything, but I didn’t want to throw it away.”

That instinct is usually the right one.

What surprises many people is how much value lies not only in the metal itself, but in its age and craftsmanship. A single solid silver spoon can sometimes be worth more than an entire silverplated canteen. Hallmarks — tiny symbols stamped into the metal — reveal where and when a piece

was made, and whether it is solid silver or plated. These details are easily overlooked, yet they make all the difference.

Silver also occupies a special place in family history. Unlike jewellery, it was often used daily: laid out for Sunday lunches, weddings and celebrations. Because of that, it carries memory as much as material worth. Part of our role in the shop is helping people understand both — explaining what they have, why it matters, and what options are available.

As interest in sustainability and reuse continues to grow, silver feels especially relevant. Rehoming a well-made piece rather than discarding it keeps craftsmanship in circulation and ensures these objects continue to be appreciated, rather than being lost to scrap or forgotten entirely.

Our in-shop valuations are designed around exactly this idea: unhurried conversations, honest guidance, and the chance to learn something new about the items you already own. Whether you decide to keep, sell, or simply understand them better, silver deserves that moment of consideration.

Sometimes, all it needs is a second look.

See you next month, Iris T:

A Hidden Natural History Gem

Tucked away in the charming Hertfordshire town of Tring, the Natural History Museum at Tring is a must-visit destination for curious minds, families, and lovers of the natural world.

This unique museum, once the private collection of Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, houses one of the UK’s most remarkable displays of mounted mammals, birds, reptiles and insects, many of which you won’t see anywhere else.

penguin, alongside extraordinary taxidermy that spans the globe. Each gallery tells a story, from how animals adapt to their environments to the fascinating history behind some of the specimens themselves.

What makes Tring especially appealing is that all galleries are free to explore, making it perfect for spontaneous day trips or family outings. Though booking your free ticket in advance is recommended to avoid queues, once inside you’re free to wander and discover at your own pace.

Beyond the displays, the museum offers guided tours, creative crafting events, outdoor activities, and plenty of hands-on experiences that keep both young and old engaged. There’s even a café and picnic areas where you can relax after exploring the exhibits.

Located on historic Akeman Street, the museum also acts as a fantastic gateway to the wider attractions of Tring, from scenic parks and nature walks to local festivals, markets and independent cafés.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a family looking for an enriching day out, or a visitor seeking something off the beaten path, the Natural History Museum at Tring offers a delightful blend of history, science and discovery in a welcoming and accessible setting.

Teaching Children to Swim for Life, Not Just Lessons

Every child remembers the moment water stops feeling scary and starts feeling like freedom. For me, helping children reach that moment isn’t just a job — it’s a mission.

I founded Ducks2Water with a simple belief: swimming is not a luxury skill, it’s a life skill. Too many programmes focus on ticking off badges or rushing children through levels. We focus on something deeper — confidence, safety, and independence in the water. When a child learns to trust themselves in the pool, they carry that confidence into the rest of their life.

Our approach is child-led and relationship-driven. Small class sizes allow our expert teachers to truly see each swimmer — their fears, their strengths, their learning style. Some children need time. Some need encouragement. Some need challenges. We meet them where they are. Our customer service philosophy extends the same care to parents, because learning to swim is a family journey, not just a weekly lesson.

My own journey shaped Ducks2Water more than any business plan ever could. I grew up with ADHD and dyslexia, which meant traditional learning environments didn’t always fit me. But the water was different — it gave me clarity and focus. Over time, I developed a teaching method that works for children

who don’t always thrive in rigid systems. It emphasizes water safety, personal responsibility, and essential life skills alongside technique.

What started as a small venture has grown into a thriving swim school serving many families. But growth isn’t about numbers for us — it’s about impact. Every new pool space means more children learning how to stay safe, more families gaining peace of mind, more children discovering confidence.

Our hope now is to expand into new pool spaces so we can reach even more communities. Because drowning is preventable, confidence is teachable, and every child deserves the chance to feel at home in the water.

At Ducks2Water, we’re not just teaching swimming. We’re teaching swimming for life.

Planning with Nature in Mind

Many of us plan carefully for the chapters ahead — where we will live, how we will spend our time, what matters most to us as life slows and priorities shift.

As people reach later life, planning often becomes an exercise in clarity - putting affairs in order, easing future decisions, and ensuring loved ones are supported. Increasingly, this thoughtful approach extends beyond finances and estates to encompass end-of-life wishes too. Those who plan ahead frequently describe the process not as unsettling, but reassuring: a way to replace uncertainty with calm intention.

Across the UK, GreenAcres Living Memorial Parks offer an alternative way to consider remembrance - one rooted in nature, tranquillity and personal choice. Set within woodlands, meadows and landscaped parklands, these spaces shaped by nature, and where meaning is held not in monuments, but in living environments.

Each GreenAcres Park is shaped around five distinct natural environments. Woodlands offer seclusion and continuity; wild meadows bring seasonal colour and biodiversity; orchards reflect cycles of renewal through fruit-bearing trees; open lawns provide light and space; while carefully designed gardens combine structure with quiet elegance and privacy.

They are intended for return: for ritual, reflection, walks, or moments of quiet connection over time.

GreenAcres offers guidance grounded in experience and reassurance. For families facing more immediate loss, compassionate support is available to help navigate decisions with confidence and care with the focus remaining on dignity, individuality and meaning.

As spring approaches and landscapes begin to reawaken, GreenAcres’ parks offer a gentle reminder that planning for later life can also be about renewal. This Spring, visitors are invited to explore a local park and experience these living landscapes as they come into bloom — places where memory, nature and peace are allowed to grow together.

Our park in Buckinghamshire provides accessible sanctuaries where tranquillity and remembrance take root.

Sometimes the most reassuring first step is simply to experience a place for yourself.

School Fees & Separation Managing with Legal Clarity and Care

The breakdown of a relationship brings emotional and practical challenges, none more pressing for parents than ensuring their children’s education remains secure. School fees can quickly become a flashpoint in separation or divorce, especially when finances are stretched and communication is strained. With early guidance and a cooperative approach, these concerns can be managed constructively.

In many families, paying for schooling is a significant shared commitment made during happier times. When circumstances change, questions arise: Who continues to pay? How are costs divided? What if one parent can no longer afford their share? The law recognises that each family’s situation is unique, and solutions are rarely “one size fits all.”

Turning Tension Into Teamwork

Open discussion, ideally supported by experienced family lawyer, can help parents reach practical agreements that prioritise the children’s stability and wellbeing. Whether through private negotiation, mediation, or formal consent orders, there are structured ways to record contributions and clarify expectations around school fees and related expenses such as uniforms, extracurricular activities and transport.

Engaging legal advice early can prevent misunderstandings that often escalate into disputes. A family lawyer can outline the range of options, explain how courts approach education expenses, and draft clear, enforceable agreements reflecting each parent’s capacity and intentions. Importantly, we can help shift focus away from past grievances toward cooperative, child-focused outcomes. Parents sometimes fear that seeking legal advice will fuel conflict but, in reality, the opposite is true. Sound legal guidance provides clarity, reassurance, and a roadmap for resolution—freeing both parties to concentrate on supporting their children through change.

How We Can Help

If you’re separating and unsure how to manage school fees or wider financial responsibilities, timely advice can make all the difference. We help families find fair, practical solutions that protect children’s education and provide confidence for the path ahead. Phasing into Retirement

5 Essential Financial Considerations

Phasing into retirement can give you more flexibility, but it can also add complexity. You may have a part-time salary, pension income, savings, and investments working together, and the order you use them in can affect tax and long-term security.

1. Work out whether your income will cover your lifestyle

If you reduce hours or change roles, your salary might not be enough. You may need to top it up using savings, investments, or pension withdrawals. Because pension income usually counts towards Income Tax, tracking each income stream can help you avoid surprises.

2. Decide whether to keep paying into your pension

Continuing contributions can strengthen your future options. Be careful if you start taking flexible income from a defined contribution pension, as you could trigger the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA). In 2025/26 the maxiumum Annual Allowance is £60,000, but the MPAA can reduce future contributions to £10,000.

3. Choose the best time to claim your State Pension State Pension age is 66 and is due to rise gradually to 68 by 2046. You must claim it, it is not

automatic. If you keep working, deferring may reduce tax while you have other income, and it increases what you receive later by 1% for every nine weeks you wait.

4. Review how your pension and other assets are invested

Many pensions shift towards lower-risk funds as retirement approaches. If you are extending your time horizon, it may be worth checking whether your investments still match your goals, timeframe, and attitude to risk.

5. Map out your long-term income needs Spending often changes through retirement, and it can be hard to judge how long your assets will last. Cashflow modelling can help you test different assumptions, such as inflation and investment returns, and spot any potential shortfall early.

If you would like help building a phased retirement plan that keeps your income, tax, and investments aligned, call Agility Financial on 01494 680848 or email hello@ agilityfinancial.co.uk to arrange a chat.

Getting Your Personal Affairs in Order

Ensuring your affairs are in order is a crucial step in safeguarding your future and providing peace of mind for you and your family. Two key components of this process are creating a will and establishing lasting powers of attorney (LPA).

Wills

A will is a legal document that outlines your wishes regarding the distribution of your assets and the care of any minor children after your death. The intestacy rules are very antiquated and do not protect or provide for modern family structures. They also do not provide any protection in the event that a beneficiary is not capable of managing their inheritance after age 18. Relying on these rules is, in short, a recipe for disaster.

Having a Will is crucial for all business owners to ensure their business (and personal) assets are managed according to their wishes after their deaths. A well-drafted Will can help prevent potential conflicts among heirs, ensure the business is passed on to a capable successor, and provide financial

security for loved ones.

Getting a Will in place is the first step but it is important to then review and update your will regularly, especially after major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or significant changes in your financial situation or the financial and personal situation of your beneficiaries. Regular updates ensure that your will remains accurate and reflects your current wishes.

Wills can be very simple and set out in black and white who gets what and when. However, for many individuals, a slightly more flexible structure is appropriate in order to provide greater protection for the family in the long run. For example, what if one of your beneficiaries is mid-divorce at the time of your death? Their inheritance might pass quickly through their hands and into the hands of a soon-to-be exspouse.

It is also important to think about possible protection on the first death. What if your partner remarries or enters into a new relationship following your death? If you have left

everything to them, those assets may not end up with your shared children and might instead pass to the new family.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)

A lasting power of attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. There are two types of LPA:

• Health and Welfare LPA: This allows your appointed attorney(s) to make decisions about your medical care, living arrangements and other personal welfare matters.

• Property and Financial Affairs LPA: This allows your appointed attorney(s) to manage your finances, including paying bills, managing bank accounts and selling property.

Common Misconceptions about LPAs

“I’m not old enough to need an LPA.”

If only I had a pound for every time someone said this to me. Incapacity is not only caused by age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s or dementia though. It could be as a result of an accident, illness, stroke or heart attack to name but a few examples. Incapacity might also be temporary as we saw during the pandemic when some patients were put on ventilators for extended period of time.

“I Have a Will, So I Don’t Need an LPA”

Your Will appoints people to deal with your affairs after your death. Until that time, your chosen executors have no powers and your beneficiaries have no rights. A Lasting Power of Attorney appoints people to act for you during your lifetime in the event that you no longer have physical or mental capacity to do so.

“Everything is held jointly so I don’t need an LPA”

This is a common myth and one that can cause families a huge amount of stress and significant cashflow issues. Regardless of whether or not your joint owner is a spouse, banks will usually freeze a joint account as soon as they become aware that one party has lost mental capacity. An application to the Court of Protection is likely to take at least 9 months and cost a significant amount of money at a time when the family are already looking at increased costs and an urgent change in circumstances.

Having both types of LPA in place is crucial and protects not only you but also your family. An LPA:

• Ensures Your Wishes Are Respected: An LPA ensures that decisions made on your behalf align with your preferences.

• Prevents Legal Complications: Without an LPA, your loved ones may need to go through a lengthy and costly court process to gain the authority to make decisions for you.

• Peace of Mind: Knowing that someone you trust will manage your affairs if you become incapacitated provides peace of mind.

Just like a will, it’s important to review your LPAs regularly.

Changes in your personal circumstances or relationships may necessitate updates to your LPAs to ensure they remain relevant and effective.

Conclusion

Getting your personal affairs in order is a vital step in planning for the future. These documents provide clarity, ensure your wishes are respected, and offer peace of mind to you and your loved ones.

So use this as your call to action. Spring cleaning is not only for our houses, take some time to review your existing documents or seek advice on putting new documents in place.

A Century Rooted in Community

In 2025, Buckinghamshire Building Society celebrated a milestone: 100 years since opening its branch on Chalfont St Giles High Street. Rather than simply marking the date, the Society chose to honour its centenary by doing what it has always done best - supporting the communities it serves.

Throughout the year, the Society backed a host of much-loved local events, from the village show and Scouts fireworks to the Christmas lights and grotto. It championed school fundraisers including a colour run, summer fayre and comedy night, while colleagues rolled up their sleeves to repaint a classroom at Chalfont St Giles Infant School, ready for the new academic year.

Education remained a priority. Through its partnership with WizeUp Financial Education, eight local secondary schools received expert guidance on student finance, CV writing and responsible use of credit, helping young people gain confidence in essential life skills.

The Society was also proud to sponsor the Excellence in Customer Experience award at the Buckinghamshire Business Awards, presented to Woodrow High House for its outstanding work supporting young people through outdoor learning.

Members selected Aylesbury Homeless Action Group (AHAG) as Charity of the Year.

Recognising the vital advice and wellbeing support AHAG provides across Aylesbury and north Buckinghamshire, the Society donated £5,000 in 2025.

Sport and fundraising played a big part too, with sponsorship of Chesham United’s pitch, Chalfont St Giles Cricket Club shirts and a charity skydive for Scannappeal. In April, CEO Dan Wass ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Citizens Advice Bucks, raising more than £2,000.

Another highlight was a £5,000 Community Fund grant to Black Park Shed, awarded through a colleague-led initiative supporting grassroots projects. The Society also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Heart of Bucks by sponsoring the Outstanding Contribution to the Charity Sector award, won by Wycombe Homeless Connection.

As Buckinghamshire Building Society looks ahead to 2026, it does so with gratitude to its members, partners and communities, and with a desire to build on a century of local impact.

I am getting divorced What happens to our pets?

For many couples going through divorce, one of the most emotionally charged questions is not about money or property, but about the family pet. Dogs, cats and other companion animals are often seen as part of the family, providing comfort, routine and emotional support. It can therefore be surprising, and upsetting, to discover how the law in England and Wales currently treats them.

How the law treats pets on divorce

Under the current legal framework, pets are classed as chattels. In simple terms, they are treated as personal possessions, much like furniture or a car. If there is a dispute, the court’s focus is on ownership rather than welfare.

This means the court will look at practical and financial factors such as who bought the pet, whose name appears on veterinary records,

who pays for food and insurance, and where the pet lives at the time of separation. The court is not required to consider what arrangement would be best for the animal itself.

There is no equivalent of a child arrangements order for pets. The court cannot order shared care or contact, even where both parties have played an active role in caring for the animal.

Why this can be so difficult

For many people, this approach feels out of step with modern family life. Pets are often deeply loved and form part of daily routines. Arguments about pets can quickly become highly emotive and may increase conflict at an already stressful time.

Disputes about pets can also complicate wider divorce negotiations, making it harder to reach agreement on finances or to move forward constructively.

Can couples agree their own arrangements?

Yes, and in most cases, this is encouraged. Many separating couples can reach sensible agreements about where a pet will live and how responsibility for care and costs will be shared. Mediation and collaborative law can be particularly effective in helping couples resolve these issues in a calm and practical way.

While these agreements are not the same as court orders for children, they can provide clarity and reassurance for both parties.

Should the law change?

There is growing recognition that the law has not kept pace with society’s view of pets. Other countries already allow courts to consider animal welfare when relationships break down.

In England and Wales, reform is actively being discussed. Sadie Glover, Partner and Head of the Family and Divorce team, is a member of The Working Group on Pets in Divorce. The group includes more than 20 family lawyers and barristers, alongside vets and an animal behaviourist, and is focused on changing the law

so that pets are treated differently from other chattels, with greater emphasis on their welfare. As a devoted dog owner and animal lover, Sadie is a passionate advocate for pets. Reflecting on the current legal position concerning pets in divorce in England and Wales, she says: “I, and the other members of the Working Group on Pets on Divorce are strongly advocating for a meaningful change in the law when it comes to pets. As a nation of pet lovers, I find it astonishing that we are lagging so far behind other jurisdictions. Australia, New Zealand, much of the USA, Canada, most of Europe and Latin America have already changed their laws so that pets are not considered merely property but have a different status to other property on divorce and separation. Our proposal is to adopt the Australian model which was in turn adopted from British Columbia, Canada”.

Taking advice early

If you are getting divorced and are worried about what will happen to your pet, early legal advice can help you understand your options and reduce the risk of conflict. Clear arrangements agreed at the outset can make a real difference for everyone involved, including your pet.

For further information or advice, get in touch with Sadie Glover on 01628 962239 or email sadie.glover@blasermills.co.uk.

While academic skills are at the heart of the school and reflected in the outstanding Senior School entrance exam results, The Beacon is also dedicated to teaching children how to learn, instilling key core learning skills such as independent thinking, teamwork and resilience, preparing them for this ever-changing world.

“Pupils get a rock-solid education and a self-belief that prepares them for their next schools, but also for the fast-changing world beyond”.

The most recent ISI Inspection Report, published in 2025, highlights that The Beacon successfully met stringent standards across all categories. Inspectors recognised strong leadership, the broad curriculum and quality of education, an inclusive ethos and a clear commitment to pupil wellbeing across every area.

The school’s mission has always been to inspire children to achieve their best within a happy, secure and stimulating environment. Pupils at The Beacon develop a character and personality that prepares them for life, ready to guide the next generation.

THE THROUGH JOURNEY AT BERKHAMSTED: Preparing pupils for life.

When a child arrives at Berkhamsted, we see them not only for their current selves, but for who they might become. With six School sites offering an educational journey all the way from 5 months to 18, we help every pupil become uniquely remarkable by tailoring their educational journey at every stage.

We operate a distinct ‘diamond structure’ at Berkhamsted to support pupils at every stage of their journey.

At Berkhamsted Pre-Prep and Prep, boys and girls are taught together in a co-educational environment. For those preferring a single-sex Prep, Heatherton School in Amersham offers a nurturing and academic location where girls thrive.

In Year 7, we align pupils into Berkhamsted Boys and Berkhamsted Girls to ensure that we can provide the best academic support, pastoral care and character education for every child. Boys and girls are not completely isolated: they still enjoy trips, extracurriculars and weekly academic stretch sessions together, and will reunite for Sixth Form. However, by teaching in single-sex environments during

these crucial years of development, we build confidence and dispel inhibitive gender stereotypes.

The impact of our single-sex environment, alongside our highquality education and care, has reflected in a record-breaking year of GCSE results at Berkhamsted. In 2025, 75.6% of grades were awarded between 7-9, and 26.4% of those were the top grade 9.

The majority of Senior pupils will move on to Berkhamsted Sixth, benefitting from the familiarity of a sustained support network, outstanding facilities and consistent ethos. This is a co-educational environment that has been purpose-built to reflect an office or university, preparing students for life beyond school.

With board-room style classrooms encouraging discussion, a forum space for public speaking and a plethora of varied study spaces, we encourage confidence, collaboration and scholarship.

From academic achievement to tailored pastoral support, we ensure that when a child leaves Berkhamsted, they are prepared to live a life worth living.

PREPPED FOR LIFE

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School, set in 15 acres of leafy grounds in Northwood, delivers the best of both worlds: a strong academic tradition with an extensive range of co-curricular and sporting activities. Located just minutes from Merchant Taylors’ senior school, it provides an excellent all-through option for high-achieving pupils.

The new Head, Miles Chester, who joined in September, brings extensive experience and a fresh, dynamic approach to the school. He is proud of the prep school’s quality of teaching and the holistic education it offers. “Through an enriched curriculum, we foster every opportunity for pupils to develop their individual potential, nurturing their unique passions, interests and aspirations. The foundation we provide ensures they are equipped with the skills and confidence to transition seamlessly to senior school,” said Mr. Chester.

The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos. From the very beginning, teachers take the time to get to know each pupil and their abilities, within a small-class setting. This allows enquiring minds to develop in an

environment where each pupil is given a sense of belonging that helps them to achieve.

Through an extensive programme of extracurricular clubs and activities, boys are encouraged to try new things and explore their talents and creativity. The school uses sport to reinforce its ethos and to instil discipline, teamwork, fair play, responsibility and respect.

Having the senior school nearby offers numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in sports, music and academics. With pupils now transitioning to senior school at the end of Year 6, the school is expanding its intake for Year 3 from September 2026. “This is a great opportunity for able pupils with potential to join our school and benefit from a well-balanced education and smooth transition to the senior school”, Mr Chester added.

To explore all that Merchant Taylors’ Prep has to offer, register for one of the school’s open mornings at mtpn.org.uk.

“The focus on the individual pupil is central to the Taylors’ ethos”

70 Acres of Opportunity

Summer Fields, Oxford, stands as one of the country’s leading Prep schools for boys, distinguished by academic ambition, breadth of opportunity, and deep commitment to nurturing wellrounded, confident young people. Set within 70 acres of beautiful parkland and river frontage, 1.5 miles from Oxford city centre, the School offers an environment where curiosity is encouraged, talents are discovered, and character is shaped every day.

Academic excellence lies at the heart of Summer Fields. Small classes, specialist teaching, and a culture that celebrates scholarship ensure that every boy is challenged, supported, and inspired. Whether preparing for senior school examinations, exploring new ideas, or developing intellectual independence, pupils benefit from learning that is both rigorous and joyful, nurturing their natural curiosity. The School’s strong record in securing places and scholarships at the country’s top senior schools reflects this academic foundation.

The Arts flourish at Summer Fields. Music, Drama, Art, Design Technology, and Pottery are woven

into daily school life, offering boys a rich and varied creative education. Whether singing in Chapel, performing on stage, sculpting in the pottery studio, engineering in DT, or developing artistic technique, pupils are encouraged to explore their creativity with confidence. Poem: The Seasons of an RMS Girl

At RMS for Girls, education is a journey that moves with the seasons — not just through the curriculum, but through the character. We invite you to explore the 6 values that define our students and the spirit that prepares them for life.

In Michaelmas, when the year is new and bright, Inclusivity guides us with a steady light.

A tapestry of voices, where every girl belongs, In a chorus of many, she finds her unique songs. When autumn winds call for a spirit more bold, The story of Courage begins to unfold.

From the hush of the stage to the thrill of the team, We give her the bravery to chase every dream.

As Hilary dawns and the New Year takes flight, Ambition ignites with a fierce, steady light.

To be the best version, to reach and to soar, Opening pathways and every closed door.

But success is a shadow if the heart isn’t kind, So Kindness is woven in soul and in mind.

A hand held in friendship, a compassionate grace, Makes our school a warm and a wonderful place.

The Trinity sun brings a focus so deep, The promises made are the promises we keep. Through Perseverance, she learns how to stand, With the strength to keep trying, and the world in her hand.

And finally, Integrity crowns every year, With a moral compass that’s constant and clear.

To live with the truth and to do what is right, A girl of RMS is a beacon of light.

Discover the RMS Difference

An RMS education is more than just a list of achievements; it is the cultivation of a principled, ambitious, and kind young woman.

We are more than a school; we are a community dedicated to the potential of every girl.

Start Year 7 the Right Way

Starting Year 7 at Clayesmore inspires confidence, curiosity, resilience, and happiness in every child. This is a landmark stage in education - the first step into Key Stage 3 - where young learners begin to shape the future they want.

At Clayesmore, happiness is at the heart of everything we do, because children who feel secure and valued are far more ready to learn, explore, and thrive.

Year 7 at Clayesmore offers small classes and personalised learning, ensuring every child is seen and supported as an individual. Teachers understand each student’s strengths and interests, providing the right level of challenge while developing confidence and resilience. Pupils are encouraged to set goals, take responsibility for their progress, and develop the values of the Clayesmore Compass - Communication, Consideration, Creativity, and Courage - which guide learning and life across the school. These values are reinforced through lessons, clubs, and daily activities, helping students build strong relationships, collaborate, and grow socially and academically. Students remain part of the Prep School until the end of Year 8, allowing a carefully managed transition. They step up academically and gain confidence from being the oldest in their part of the school.

House, gaining valuable experience. This combination of a small, supportive environment and broader exposure prepares pupils fully for Year 9 and the expectations of senior school.

Learning is enriched by Clayesmore’s specialist LEX programme, which blends academic exploration with practical experiences, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world connections. Daily sport builds teamwork, perseverance, and confidence, while a wide range of clubs encourages pupils to explore interests from music and drama to coding and community service.

Year 7 is also a year of adventure. Students visit the battlefields of France, bringing history to life, while Year 8 concludes with a trip to Cornwall, celebrating progress and preparing them for senior school. These experiences strengthen friendships, independence, and responsibility.

At Clayesmore, small class sizes, personalised learning, and exceptional support ensure children explore interests, embrace challenges, and develop life skills that last long beyond school. Year 7 is more than a year - it is an experience in confidence, curiosity, and character, laying the foundation for future success.

In Year 8, they take on leadership roles such as prefects and Heads of

INDEPENDENT SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2025

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make.

At Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools, students benefit from an exceptional education that blends the best of single-sex learning with the benefits of a co-educational environment.

Set on a stunning 100-acre campus in Elstree, Hertfordshire, Habs Boys and Habs Girls offer an inspiring education for students aged four to 18, encouraging intellectual ambition, strong character, and a commitment to make a profound impact in the world.

Last year, Habs achieved an incredible double recognition: winning both the award for Outstanding Educational Partnerships and the overall top accolade of Independent School of the Year 2025. The judging panel praised the school for staying true to its vision, combining academic excellence with the ambition to make a meaningful difference in the world.

With a mission to be at the forefront of education, the schools offer a dynamic and forward-thinking curriculum designed to equip students with independence, resilience, and an open mind. Innovation is embedded throughout school life, with the Director of Innovation driving initiatives that prepare students for an evolving digital landscape.

At the heart of Habs Elstree’s success is a clearly defined purpose: to empower young people to make a real difference. Their Partnerships Programme is a pioneering initiative with six

local state schools aimed at building educational opportunities for communities with average or above-average levels of disadvantage. Each week, Habs delivers over 52 hours of curriculum support and enrichment to almost 2,000 students, involving 500 Habs pupils and 56 staff.

As well as fostering the leadership skills that are central to being a Habs student, the programme improved attendance among disadvantaged pupils by 10.1% – not just for those in the programme, but at school overall – that’s the equivalent to a full extra day of school every two weeks.

While academic excellence remains a hallmark of a Habs education, a comprehensive pastoral care programme nurtures students’ emotional, social, and spiritual development. An outstanding range of co-curricular activities allows students to explore their interests and talents beyond the classroom.

With world-class facilities, ongoing campus investment, and a strong commitment to social responsibility, Habs continues to evolve, empowering students to make a profound impact in the world and exemplifying the very best of independent education today. Discover more at habselstree.org.uk.

“This year’s Independent School of the Year has demonstrated its resilience in staying true to its vision, rather than swerving the challenges of the moment…It represents the very best qualities of the independent sector — a voice that helps the wider world to understand the powerful and positive impact of this sector.”

Creating a Nurturing Environment

Welcome to St Peter’s Church of England (VA) Primary School, a nurturing and vibrant learning community situated on the border of Rickmansworth. Since our founding in 1880, we have remained dedicated to providing a supportive environment where every child is loved, cared for, and encouraged to flourish.

At the heart of everything we do is our school vision: “One Family, Aiming High, Learning Together with God.” This ethos, deeply rooted in the Christian faith and the parable of The Lost Sheep, shapes our daily life. We pride ourselves on our inclusive “family feel,” where children learn the importance of their own individuality while showing love, compassion, and respect to one another.

Our curriculum is designed to be rich, diverse, and engaging, fostering a lifelong love of learning. From our Forest School—where pupils build self-confidence and survival skills in the great outdoors—to our focus on a rich and diverse curriculum, we aim to equip every child with the

tools they need to succeed. We are committed to academic excellence, but we place equal value on spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. Our core values of perseverance, respect, enthusiasm, and spirituality are lived out by students and staff alike, ensuring our pupils leave us as well-rounded members of society.

As a Voluntary Aided school, we enjoy an intrinsically strong relationship with St Peter’s Church. This partnership extends into the wider community, from supporting local food banks to collaborative events that bring us all together. Whether it is through our daily worship, our active School Council, or our “Wise Owls” peer mediators, we empower our students to take responsibility and contribute positively to the world around them.

We invite you to experience our warm and friendly atmosphere firsthand. At St Peter’s, you will find a school where learning is in action, diversity is celebrated, and every child is supported on their unique journey. We look forward to welcoming you into our school family.

Happiness, Confidence, Success

Childhood is a precious time – a chapter that should be nurtured, celebrated, and filled with opportunity. At Westbrook Hay, we want these years to be among the very best in your child’s life.

For us, “the best” is built on four foundations: a caring ethos, academic ambition, a broad curriculum and a fabulous setting. Together, they create an environment where children are happy, confident, successful and well prepared for their future.

Our caring ethos lies at the heart of all we do. When children feel supported and valued, they are eager to learn and ready to grow. With encouragement and guidance, they develop not only knowledge, but also the character and values that last a lifetime.

We pair this with academic ambition. Learning is central to life at Westbrook Hay, and our pupils are challenged to think deeply, work hard, and achieve

their very best. Success in the classroom builds confidence, to aim even higher. Our state-of-theart facilities support this ambition at every stage of a child’s education.

We educate pupils from 3 to the age of 16, providing a carefully structured and challenging curriculum that culminates in GCSE qualifications. Our GCSE programme is designed to ensure pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, equipped with strong academic foundations, independence of thought, and the confidence to succeed beyond Westbrook Hay.

Our broad curriculum ensures that every child can find their passion. From a very successful sports programme to the creative and performing arts, we give children the chance to shine in many arenas – nurturing their talents and broadening their horizons.

Finally, our fabulous setting enhances this experience. With 26 acres of playing fields, a six hole golf course and woodland, pupils enjoy the freedom to run, climb, explore, and play – all within a beautiful countryside environment just minutes from town. We believe childhood should be active and adventurous, and sometimes with muddy shoes!

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent will make. It is about finding a place where your child will be cared for, inspired, and stretched to reach their potential. We warmly invite you to visit us and discover why so many families choose Westbrook Hay as their first choice of school.

Your Big Questions About Retirement Living, Answered

Castle View Windsor is built around the questions people ask most when they start thinking seriously about retirement living: Will I still feel independent?

Will I be happy day to day? And will I feel safe and supported without giving up my freedom?

Every apartment has its own front door, modern kitchen, balcony and generous living space, so it feels like a real home. Light, thoughtfully designed layouts give you space for your furniture, hobbies and visiting family, with high-quality finishes that make downsizing feel like a step up, not a compromise.

Life here is about lifestyle, not just accommodation. You can join as many clubs, events and rooftop get-togethers as you like, or simply enjoy the peace of your own apartment and the landscaped gardens. On-site lounges, dining and recreational spaces make it easy to meet neighbours, stay active and build new friendships at your own pace.

This is not a care home; it is an independent retirement community with support on hand when you want it. A professional team looks after the buildings and gardens and can help arrange services such as cleaning or small repairs, so everyday life is easier and less stressful.

With a secure setting, underground car park and staff presence, you can relax whether you are at home, out for the day or travelling, knowing everything is being looked after. To discover whether Castle View Windsor could be your next chapter, arrange a private tour and experience it for yourself. castleviewwindsor.co.uk

HOUSE & GARDEN

HUMPHREY HOMES Commitment to Excellence

Thinking of renovating a period property?

Then the first and most important decision isn’t about tiles, kitchens, or extensions. It’s about who you trust to work on it. Because old houses are not just older versions of modern homes — they are fundamentally different. That’s where Humphrey Homes comes in.

If your home was built before 1919, it was designed to breathe. Traditional solid-wall houses were constructed using lime mortar, not modern cement. Lime is softer, flexible, and breathable, allowing moisture to pass naturally through the walls. This simple but vital principle is one of the reasons these homes have stood strong for more than a century.

Modern materials often ignore that logic. Cement-based mortars, hard renders, and quick-fix solutions trap moisture in walls that were never designed to hold it. Over time, this leads to damp, decay, and costly damage that

can undermine the fabric of the building. Old houses don’t want modern shortcuts. They want traditional materials and people who understand them.

Heritage repairs done the traditional way aren’t about being stuck in the past. They’re about using methods that work. Lime mortars, breathable finishes, and careful repair techniques respect the original construction and allow the building to function as intended. These are time-tested solutions — proven not by trends, but by longevity.

At Humphrey Homes, we specialise in heritage and period properties. We understand how traditional buildings behave and how to repair them sympathetically, without compromising their character or performance. Our approach is simple: work with the building, not against it.

Old houses. Traditional skills. Built to last. If you’re thinking of renovating a period property, talk to people who understand them. Talk to Humphrey Homes. humphreyhomesbuilders.co.uk

CLIENT REVIEW

We’ve had a fantastic experience with this building company. They may be small, but that’s exactly what makes them special—the whole team brings a warm enthusiasm and you can feel the passion behind their work from the very first conversation. The communication was clear, the process felt collaborative and there was a real sense of trust throughout, which was key when our home revealed some extensive problems.

Ed and team’s expertise in heritage homes is truly unique. This company don’t just renovate; they restore with real care and respect for the original character of the property. It’s rare to find a team that combines craftsmanship, attention to detail, and such a heartfelt commitment to preserving history. We would highly recommend for anyone wanting quality work delivered with integrity and a personal touch. Thanks again Ed to you and your team

WOOD VS MARBLE: The table top guide

The unique shapes and patterns provided by the natural world are the building blocks of furniture favourites found in every home. Fibres become our fabrics, sand becomes our glass, and most importantly (to me, dear reader) the myriad of marbles and timbers form our tables, big and small. Is there anything more beautiful than a table topped with intricately veined Calacatta, or the rich grain of an oak surface? But how do you choose between the two? Both are embodiments of design majesty, albeit for very different reasons.

What belongs where – and why does it belong there? What are the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between these material giants? Welcome to a heavyweight title fight: Wood vs Marble.

The big picture: Marble is synonymous with opulence. The palaces of antiquity were shaped by it, and modern spaces are not so different. Today, however, the material is used more internally than externally. It can be used to create truly unique, one-of-a-kind tables, with veins that can be traced through a seemingly indestructible surface; a

kind of liquidity within the absolute. Meanwhile its wide variation of earthy finishes makes it a natural choice for countless settings: a master of standing out while fitting in. Marble is surprisingly versatile... for a rock.

On the other side, wood tables are the original. Picture Goldilocks and her porridge. Medieval dining halls. One thing in common: wood. Their desirability comes from natural warmth, the soothing patterns of the grain, and the familiarity of a timber dining table – something many of us grew up with at home.

Look and feel: The physical texture of both materials is solid, strong and supportive. Wood with its subtle, story-telling imperfections and natural tactility brings an instant sense of comfort to a room. Marble by contrast is cool to the touch not just to the eye.

It’s what these materials evoke that truly sets them apart. Wood’s organic character offers a welcoming charm as you enter a space, as if inviting you to take a seat at the table or set down your Earl Grey. Marble, on the other hand, is sleek and dynamic, perfectly suited to moments that call for something a little more eye-catching.

Durability: “Solid as a rock,” as the old saying

goes, marble is one of nature’s most durable materials. Highly resistant to temperature changes and capable of withstanding a significant amount of force, standing strong against the thrills and spills of a busy household – unless, of course, you’re holding a glass of wine. Depending on whether it has been pre-sealed, marble is incredibly porous, readily absorbing certain liquids that can leave rings or stains. Coasters, therefore, are an absolute must when entertaining. Or drinking alone. We don’t judge.

Wood, while lacking the innate strength of marble, is far more forgiving if something does go wrong. Scratches and chips are considerably easier to repair and for many the natural wear and tear of everyday use develops something that looks better nowhere else than on timber: character.

Ethical Consumption: As with the manufacture and transportation of anything in the modern world, both marble and wood come with environmental drawbacks. Because both are naturally occurring commodities, we have to look a little deeper than usual. Marble is generally less ecologically impactful to manufacture, but it is non-renewable and—unlike trees—cannot be regrown (not unless you’re prepared to wait a few eons). As such, it must be cared for with absolute diligence to ensure longevity.

Wood, while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential.

The answer? Shop brands with clearly defined eco-policies – those that make a genuine, vested effort to leave the planet better for having been part of their process. Look for commitments

to tree replacement or CO2 reduction, and manufacturers that provide aftercare guidance to extend the lifespan of each piece. Brands such as Gubi and Audo are excellent examples of these principles in practice.

Maintenance: One of the more closely matched categories in this comparison: both materials require a certain level of TLC. To maintain the prestigious look they offer, it’s best to use pH-neutral cleaners that won’t damage delicate surfaces. As mentioned previously, sealed marble provides far greater protection from the thrills and spills of a busy household, however, care is more about prevention than cure. Coasters and mats are an essential accessory.

Wood, on the other hand, is more forgiving. Surface-level scratches can be sanded out, a leg can be replaced, and a fresh layer of finish can be applied breathing new life into what may one day be considered a family heirloom. We’d also recommend a weekly wipe-down and limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for certain timbers, helping to prevent bleaching over time. chaplins.co.uk

while renewable through replanting, plays a far more significant role within our ecosystem. Forests support biodiversity, aid carbon absorption, and contribute to environmental balance, making responsible sourcing essential”

Creating the Wow Factor

Located in the heart of NW6, a house named ‘Serene’ lives up to its name. A tranquil, design-led space where delicate tones, organic textures, and architectural clarity come together in harmony.

Developed by Kyte Properties, a boutique London-based property company known for their meticulous attention to detail, this project captures the true essence of what makes a house a home.

From the very beginning, the vision was clear: To create a seamless connection between the polished concrete interiors and a quiet, courtyard retreat. The design called for a material that could bridge this transition without losing warmth or texture. Brick slips were the perfect solution offering a tactile surface with timeless character.

Design Inspired by Flow

Inspired by homes discovered on Pinterest, the team set out to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. Every detail was carefully considered from the soldier courses that echo the shadow gap skirting, to the orientation of each brick slip. The result is a space that flows effortlessly, both visually and functionally.

Why Blend 71?

Chosen for its warm, earthy tones, blend 71 complements the Bauwerk Limewash walls that

feature prominently throughout the interior. The soft colour variation of the slips enhance the natural aesthetic of the space, creating a soothing contrast to the crisp, modern lines of the architectural design.

Laid in a stacked bond with crisp white mortar, Blend 71 spans both walls and floors — becoming the unifying design element in this carefully curated interior. Its soft, organic texture anchors the home with a sense of warmth and understated sophistication.

The stacked bond brings something differentan extra detail, flourish, boldness and individuality that traditional stretcher bonds don’t match. It’s not suitable for every project, but with the surrounding decor and styling here it is a perfect match.

Installation & Finishing Touches

The installation process was smooth and creatively rewarding. The team took great care in experimenting with layout directions, pushing the design further with small but impactful details. Blend 71 has natural variation of colouring between browns and white, with salts developing the whiteness through moisture. This means that consideration on blending is important to ensure you don’t end up with patches of brown and patches of white, rather a more mixed variation throughout.

The Final Result

From the moment you step into the basement, the impact is immediate. The brick slip flooring in particular has become the signature feature of the home — consistently drawing compliments and attention.

“Every time someone steps into the basement, they comment on how incredible the floor looks. It’s the talking feature of the house.”

This project is a testament to how thoughtful material selection, inspired design, and expert craftsmanship can come together to create a home that is both modern and deeply comforting.

The aesthetic materials used in this case were blend 71 brick slips and white pointing mortar. bricktilecompany.com
