YOUR HOLIDAY SHOULDN’T BE HARD WORK
Q&A with Carsten Lund, Founder of TRIPLA
Q. When we were chatting before this interview, you said luxury is about “ease.” What does that mean to you?
To me, true luxury is when everything flows. That doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful. A wellness retreat in the Alps where transfers, spa treatments, and mountain hikes are seamlessly coordinated. Or a short city break where the flights, hotel, and a hard-to-get dinner reservation are already sorted. We do work with high-touch experiences, but it’s not about the price tag, it’s about removing stress and creating something that feels personal.
Q. In your experience as a traveller and industry professional, have you noticed travel needs changing in recent years?
Very much so. People are no longer just looking for a nice hotel or a beautiful view, they often want something deeper, something that resonates. I’ve noticed a real shift towards travel that feels meaningful. For some, that means behind-the-scenes cultural access; meeting local artisans, exploring places tourists don’t usually see. For others, it’s culinary journeys, connecting with a region through its food and wine. And increasingly, it’s about restoration: wellness retreats, mindful escapes, and time to simply switch off in a way daily life doesn’t allow. Travel has become less about ticking off a destination and more about creating experiences that inspire, enrich, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
We’ve all been there. Ten-tabs deep in-flight options, hotel reviews, and “must-see” lists. Why does organising time away so often feel like a job in itself? We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach.
Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences?
I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens, from barefoot escapes on private islands to cultural weekends in Europe, and even multi-generational cruises or villas. And what always stands out is how much detail matters. The transfer that’s waiting without fuss or the restaurant that actually lives up to its promise. It’s these little things that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.
Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging?
Time, mostly. People are busy, and while travel should be restorative, organising it often isn’t. I’ve seen clients arrive exhausted before their holiday even begins because they’ve spent weeks trying to piece it all together online. One family I worked with wanted a milestone birthday in Tuscany. They’d been overwhelmed by villa choices and didn’t know which were genuinely right for them. We stepped in, found a villa with space for grandparents, teenagers, and young children, complete with a private chef for a celebratory meal and a private wine tasting. For them, it turned from a logistical headache into a celebration they’ll never forget.
Q. With travel uncertainty on the rise, how can travellers be sure their money is safe?
It’s a very real question for many travellers. At TRIPLA, protection isn’t an add-on - it’s the foundation of everything we do. All flight-inclusive holidays are fully ATOL protected, and every client payment is held securely in Trust by NatWest Bank and the Travel Trust Association. This means client money is safeguarded from the moment they book, even in the unlikely event that a supplier or TRIPLA were to fail. In a landscape where reassurance matters, TRIPLA ensures every journey is 100% financially secure.
Q. What’s the best way to start planning a trip with TRIPLA? Everything begins with getting to know you. When clients connect with us - whether online or by getting in touch directly - it gives us a sense of their travel style and helps us start shaping ideas that are genuinely personal. Joining our mailing list also keeps you in the loop with tailored inspiration, updates and occasional offers, including the chance to win a £500 travel voucher. It’s a simple first step toward creating a journey designed entirely around you.
Q. And finally, what do you hope clients feel when they travel with TRIPLA?
Peace of mind, really. That feeling of being looked after so they can just enjoy the experience. Whether it’s a river cruise with private excursions, a birthday in Tuscany, or a quick Parisian escape between board meetings, I want them to feel it was designed just for them. And that they never had to worry about the details.

WHERE MICHELIN PEDIGREE MEETS PRIVATE INDULGENCE
From the quiet elegance of an intimate brunch to the polished theatre of a formal dinner, from languid afternoon teas to impeccably curated canapé soirées, Chef Paul O’Brien offers more than a dining experience - he delivers a bespoke culinary narrative, tailored with precision to both palate and occasion.
Irish-born and internationally acclaimed, O’Brien’s journey is one shaped by discipline, ambition, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. Trained among some of the most exacting Michelin-starred kitchens, including under the guidance of Pascal Proyart, his early years were steeped in a culinary culture where standards were exacting and hierarchy fierce,” he reflects, “even the herb pots stood to attention.”
By 1986, a young and determined O’Brien had set his sights on London, immersing himself in the capital’s demanding gastronomic landscape. His formative years unfolded within the rarefied world of Knightsbridge’s five-star establishments, where he refined his craft to an award-winning level, earning three AA Rosettes and cultivating a reputation for both technical mastery and creative finesse.
His career would go on to include pivotal roles in shaping some of London’s most distinguished hospitality brands. As Executive Chef at The London Clinic on Harley Street, he achieved the
notable distinction of Healthcare Chef of the Year - an accolade that speaks to his ability to merge nourishment with nuance. His influence also extended to the development of The Doyle Collection’s luxury portfolio, including The Marylebone Hotel and the celebrated Dalloway Terrace, where his culinary vision helped define a modern standard of understated luxury.
Today, O’Brien’s philosophy has evolved into something both refined and deeply personal. “My passion for cooking now lies in supporting the local community,” he explains, “using all my knowledge and expertise to bring award-winning, yet accessible, food to the table - locally.”
That ethos is perhaps most beautifully realised in his private dining experiences. With spring in full bloom, there is a particular allure to the idea of a five-star afternoon tea, served in the comfort of one’s own home or garden. Picture delicate patisserie, impeccably cut finger sandwiches, and warm scones, all presented on elegant, tiered stands, accompanied by fine linens, polished cutlery, and thoughtfully curated tableware - every detail considered, every element elevated.
In an era where true luxury lies in personalisation and authenticity, Chef Paul O’Brien offers something quietly exceptional: a seamless blend of world-class expertise and intimate hospitality, delivered directly to your door.

SThis month at West Horsley Place
ettled in the heart of a rolling Surrey estate, West Horsley Place offers a rare opportunity this April to step back directly into the elegance and intrigue of the Regency era. Through two carefully curated events - Starlit Soirée and Regency Revels - the historic estate transforms from into a living, breathing time capsule of early nineteenthcentury life.
The season begins with the Starlit Soirée, an intimate Regency ball held within the manor’s atmospheric Stone Hall. With limited numbers, this adult only evening is designed to immersive guests in Regency dancing. You will be welcomed with sparkling wine and canapés before being guided through the intricacies of the steps in a lively workshop. From there, the night unfolds with live period music, costumed performers, and even traditional entertainments, from parlour games to silhouette portrait cutting. The emphasis is on authenticity - no prior dance experience is required - making it as inviting for newcomers as it is for enthusiasts of historical reenactment.
On Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, they will host a vibrant daytime exploration of the period called Regency Revels, a weekend living history festival with plenty to do for families. Here, the entire estate comes alive: visitors can wander freely through the manor and gardens, encounter
costumed interpreters, sample historically inspired food, take a carriage ride and dance the day away. Talks and displays delve into the literary and social world of the period, including connections to Jane Austen and her links to Surrey, offering deeper context to the era’s enduring cultural fascination.
Whether watching a military reenactment, trying a Regency recipe, or learning the coded language of a decorative fan, visitors are encouraged to engage directly with the past. Families, history lovers, and the simply curious will all find something to entertain.
A unique heritage venue which breaks down barriers, West Horsley Place demonstrates how history can be both educational and enchanting. West Horsley Place doesn’t just tell the story of the Regency - they invite you to live it.

Hosted by the Surrey Hills National Landscape, this event gives local horse riders the opportunity to ride their mounts to St Martha’s Church, where there will be an optional blessing of the horses promptly at 2pm. Most riders like to be smartly dressed, and this makes for a perfect picture up on the hill. A diverse array of riders, horses and ponies take part, with the treat of enjoying the perfect view atop St Martha’s Hill. Walkers and dogs on leads are welcome to attend. The event is FREE but if you are a rider,

please register your details so we know how many people with their horses will be attending. If you are spectating on foot, you do not need to book a ticket.
There will be a collection on the day for St Martha’s Church and the Surrey Hills Society who deliver important conservation and access projects for people and nature.
Parking and arrival
Travel and parking to the event is the responsibility of the attendees. However, for those using horse transport, and seeking a good hack in conjunction with the service, we recommend the Roman Temple Car Park on Farley Green GU5 9ER.
The service is short, so that horses don’t become restless. Riders must find their own way to St Martha’s Church, using the network of bridleways that criss-cross this section of the Surrey Hills.
All pedestrians, spectators, with dogs on leads will be guided to view from inside the cemetery walls, from where the service will be conducted.
There will be a welcome, a prayer, and a poem, before the vicar visits each horse and rider in turn, to give the blessing.
There is no fee but there will be a collection taken at the event, which riders will be encouraged to support; at the close, participating riders will receive a rosette, before dispersing.
This event may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

SURREY DAY 2026
Saturday 9 May 2026
Each year, Surrey Day features a special theme to inspire celebrations across the county.
Previous themes have included the Great Surrey Menu, Surrey from the Sky, Surrey’s Waterways and Surrey’s role during World War Two.
In 2026, we will be Going Underground and uncovering Surrey’s Hidden Treasures.
One of the key themes for 2026 will be exploring ‘Underground Surrey’. From food and drink production, to wonderful places to visit both above and below ground - Surrey Day delves into the layers of soil, rock, and history that support and shape our county. There’s so much we don’t know about ‘what lies beneath’ and we can’t wait to find out more.
We’re looking to spark an interest in getting to know Surrey from a different perspective, through a series of ‘treasure hunts’ across the county. They will give everyone a chance to explore the place we’re lucky enough to call home and perhaps learn something new!
Spearheaded by Visit Surrey, the county’s official tourist board, alongside partners BBC Surrey and Surrey Lieutenancy, is a much-anticipated celebration which sees people of all ages come together to enjoy a whole range of special events, activities and VIP visits.
As always, Surrey Day is open to everyone. Event organisers are urged to get creative, and the Visit Surrey website includes lots of ideas of ways to get involved.
HERE’S JUST A SMALL SELECTION OF EVENTS TAKING PLACE.

The event is free, so roll up your sleeves and don your wellies for some muddy fun. All the family are welcome.
Places are limited, so book your slot on the Tanhurst Estate website.

The story of Loseley Park begins in the early years of the 16th century, when the Manor of Loseley was purchased during the reign of Henry VII. Its new owner, Sir Christopher More - Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex - was a man of considerable influence and authority. Yet it was his son, Sir William More, a direct ancestor of the present owners, who truly shaped Loseley’s legacy by embarking on an ambitious programme of building.
At the heart of the estate stands the magnificent Tudor manor house, located just three miles southwest of Guildford. Constructed between 1562 and 1568, the present house was built using stone salvaged from the ruins of nearby Waverley Abbey. It replaced an earlier, more modest dwelling - one that Elizabeth I famously deemed “not adequate” for a royal visit, prompting the construction of a grander residence worthy of her presence.
Loseley’s celebrated walled garden is based on a design by the renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and is arranged as a series of distinct
“At

“rooms,” each with its own character and planting theme. Redevelopment of the garden began in 1993–94 with the Rose Garden and has since expanded to include the Herb Garden, Flower Garden, White Garden, and, most recently, the organic Vegetable and Cut Flower Garden. Beyond the formal gardens, the Loseley Lakes offer a tranquil haven for both wildlife and visitors. These historic water features form part of the landscaped parkland surrounding Loseley House and once served practical purposes - providing fish, water, and beauty to the estate. Thanks to support from the Surrey Hills Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, the upper and lower lakes have recently been restored. The project has improved water quality, reopened views towards the house, and created thriving habitats for wildlife such as kingfishers and dragonflies. New picnic benches along the footpath now invite walkers to pause and enjoy the revitalised landscape.
Acquired by the direct ancestors of the current owners, the More-Molyneux family, at the beginning of the 16th century, Loseley Park remains a family home to this day. Still lived in by the More-Molyneux family, the estate opens to the public each spring, offering visitors a rare glimpse into centuries of English history set within a living landscape.

‘DRIVE IT DAY’ CLASSIC CAR EVENT RETURNS TO WINDSOR AT CASTLE VIEW
Sunday 26 April 2026
For those with a treasured classic vehicle, National Drive It Day is one of the first opportunities after the long winter to get it out for a run, and Castle View is again providing a coffee stop for participants to add to their itinerary on Sunday 26 April, 10am - 2pm.
Just a mile from the centre of Windsor and easily accessed from the M4 and M25, Windsor Great Park, Legoland and Ascot, Castle View will be open to all classic vehicle owners and those keen to view some beautiful classics.
“Castle View is well placed to offer a coffee stop to those classic car enthusiasts participating in Drive It Day around Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and West London. There’s no knowing what vehicles will be here on the day, but last year we had a wonderful assortment of over 50 classic sports and saloon cars, and we can promise some tasty cakes produced by our talented
homeowners,” says Karl Hallows, managing director of Castle View.
To join in, drivers can purchase a ‘Drive It Day’ car plaque from just £12.50 at driveitday.co.uk/ shop or simply arrive on the day, no pre-booking required, although groups are asked to call 07778 554666 to advise their arrival time.
National Drive It Day was created by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) in 2005. It is the occasion when historic vehicle enthusiasts and the public at large have the opportunity to celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial organised in 1900 to prove the viability of the new invention, the motor vehicle. It is also a chance to raise awareness and support amongst the public for the historic vehicle movement and keeping transport heritage on UK roads, while also raising funds for the NSPCC’s Childline.
Castle View is on Helston Lane, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 5GG castleviewwindsor.co.uk

HAMPTON COURT PALACE FESTIVAL 2026
Announces spectacular line-up. From 10 – 20 June 2026
Hampton Court Palace Festival returns with a series of unmissable acts with musical legends and pop icons – all taking place on the Base Court stage within the stunning Tudor courtyard of Henry VIII’s majestic palace. Running over nine nights, the series will host just 3,000 guests each evening, offering an intimate open-air concert experience like no other.
First soak up the atmosphere in East Front Gardens whilst feasting on a pre-show picnic or your own homemade treats, accompanied by a chilled glass of champagne. To elevate the experience, you can pre-order a luxury picnic hamper to be shared ahead of the concert. There is also an array of street food traders offering a wide range to cater for all tastes.
Then you make your way through the heart of the 500 year-old palace to Base Court, where
performances will unfold in a truly spine-tingling setting.
Singer songwriter David Gray, one of the most influential singer songwriters of his generation, opens the festival with two shows on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 June. He has sold over 11 million records worldwide, earned multiple BRIT Award nominations and had multiple hit singles including “Babylon”, “This Year’s Love”, “Sail Away” and “The One I Love”. Entertaining, beautifully considered
There is an art to creating events that feel both elegant and effortless. The most memorable gatherings are never simply about scale, but about atmosphere, the quiet confidence of a beautifully arranged space, the rhythm of the evening, and the way each detail contributes to a larger feeling of welcome and occasion.
For Sunita, founder of Neon Tiger Events, that is where the essence of good entertaining begins. “I have always believed that the most successful events are the ones where people feel instantly at ease, while still experiencing something visually striking and thoughtfully designed” she says. “It is about striking the right balance between beauty, function and feeling.” From large scale occasions at venues such as the National Gallery to intimate private dinners, lunches and elevated brand experiences, Neon Tiger Events brings a tailored sensibility to every brief.
The style of an event can transform the way it is remembered. A considered palette, layered textures, elegant florals, candlelight and carefully chosen details all work together to create a setting that feels immersive and refined. Whether it is a table, a room or an entire venue, the aim is always the same: to create something distinctive, polished and memorable.
At Neon Tiger Events, design and guest
experience go hand in hand. Every element is shaped with intention, from the flow of the space to the final finishing touches. The result is an event that feels seamless in delivery and rich in atmosphere, never overworked, but always considered.
In a world where guests increasingly value experiences that feel personal and beautifully executed, thoughtful event design matters more than ever. It is the difference between something that simply looks good and something that lingers in the memory.
For Neon Tiger Events, that is the heart of every project: refined styling, seamless planning and occasions that feel as impressive as they are inviting.

Saatchi Gallery at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show
19 – 23 May 2026
Saatchi Gallery is to present its garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 in collaboration with kinetic artist Lucy Gregory, garden designer Naomi FerrettCohen, and supporter ING.
Created for Saatchi Gallery’s sixth collaboration with the internationally acclaimed Flower Show, the 2026 design brings together contemporary art, thoughtful planting and public participation. The project is supported by ING, whose commitment to advancing sustainable practice and supporting cultural initiatives reflects a shared belief in the value of nature, creativity and collective responsibility.
Guests are invited to venture down the garden path into a surreal environment of interactive, anthropomorphic tree-like structures that hug the space. As visitors push the sculptures into motion, they trigger a joyful, spiralling dance that gradually settles into a playful, slapstick wobble as momentum slows. The garden celebrates the simple pleasure of gathering together outdoors such as in a park or meadow, and the positive
effect nature can have on us.
Gregory was inspired by the energy and rhythm of Matisse’s The Dance, a scene depicting figures entirely lost in the moment within the landscape. She translates the painting’s iconic arabesque into a vibrant, abstract spinning choreography in steel. In Matisse’s composition, two hands have slipped apart, creating a subtle tension within the circle; here, Gregory invites the public to close the circle that Matisse left open by physically reconnecting the cartoon-like hands, reactivating the dance through touch.
The motif of the circle underpins the entire garden. The path twists, foliage unfolds and sculptural forms reveal in a sense of child-like discovery. The sculptural arms envelop, guide and usher visitors through the space. As they glide through greenery, they recall the universal memory of walking through a meadow, trailing fingers through long grasses.
Gregory explains, “Roundness operates

conceptually as well as physically, interweaving themes of community, interconnection with nature and the body in the landscape.” The recent artist’s residency she took part in, entitled Body and Place, explored the body within natural settings through life drawing outdoors and through movement.
“These studies became a melting pot of ideas for new kinetic figurative works situated directly in the landscape.”
Gregory’s practice upturns the traditional ‘look, don’t touch’ mentality instead, encouraging play and curiosity through interaction with the artworks. The viewer becomes the engine, activator and performer, intertwined with the work itself, as they bring the sculptures to life through participation and touch.
Inspired by mechanical toys, Victorian automatons and early animation devices, she constructs large-scale figurative ‘kinetic collages’, where abstracted ‘cutouts’ or black and white imagery are mounted on engineered steel frames. The forms move through spinning axles, swinging pendulums and subtle shifts in balance to emphasise a certain gesture, action or movement and to re-imagine the human form in, a often humorous, collision bodies and machines.
Naomi Ferrett-Cohen’s planting design brings warmth and vibrancy to the space, with a colourful
palette that complements the bold backdrop. An award-winning designer working across Sussex, Surrey and London, she is known for creating naturalistic gardens with strong structure and clarity. Here, her scheme ensures that sculpture and planting sit in dynamic balance, each heightening the presence of the other.
Presented at RHS Chelsea from 19 - 23 May 2026, and realised with the support of ING, the design offers an invitation to step into movement, to reconnect with nature and with one another, and to complete the circle together.

DOWNSEND SCHOOL: Preparing children for a world that doesn’t exist yet
Since the Covid pandemic, remote working and workforce changes have accelerated the adoption of digital tools. Furthermore, generative AI has changed not only ways of working, but ways of thinking.
Against this backdrop, we are increasingly educating our pupils for portfolio careers, among which are likely to be jobs that don’t yet exist. Studies, such as World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, indicate that analytical thinking remains the top core skill followed by a diverse range of attributes such as resilience, agility, social influence and creative thinking. This highlights the broad range of skills we need to embed; a blend of digital fluency, emotional intelligence, creativity and adaptability, coupled with excellence in all forms of communication.
This reinforced our determination at Downsend to ensure our pupils are future ready, educated beyond the traditional curriculum and have the grit to thrive in the changing world. This shaped our Future Skills vision to promote resilient, lifelong learners with awareness of their own skills. It is built around four interlinked aims: inspiring a global perspective, shaping incredible people, stimulating creativity, and building digital mastery. But what does that actually look like day-to-day?
It means our Year 4 pupils communicate designs to accept and implement feedback as they hone their
entrepreneurial mindset, Year 6 build businesses to raise money for local charities and Year 12 pupils pitch business proposals at Battersea Power Station. It means GCSE students run the technical aspects of the Year 7 play and Year 12 Sports Leaders organise activities for younger students. It means partnerships with Lego Education, CREST awards in STEM, and a £5m Creative Arts Centre where pupils can explore theatre, music and art in inspiring surroundings. It also means not compromising on the fundamentals. Our commitment to academic ambition, personalised learning and brilliant basics remains central.
What sets Downsend apart is how intentionally these future skills are woven into everyday learning. Every lesson plan, from our nurseries all the way through to Sixth Form, seeks opportunities for collaboration, communication and creative problem-solving. Pupils are given a voice from their earliest days, encouraged to debate, present and speak confidently to a wide range of people. Digital skills are planned so ‘every click counts’ and screen time is balanced by practical and traditional activities to ensure wellbeing.
For parents looking beyond league tables and exam results, Downsend offers something different. An education designed not just for the world as it is, but for the world as it will be. downsend.co.uk
BENEFITS OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL
With options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.
ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES
One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular
learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.
CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES
Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualized attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.
“91
per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”
DEDICATED TEACHERS
Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
Private schools typically maintain clear expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.
AMPLE RESOURCES
Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. These activities help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, and social
“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”
skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.
PREPARATION FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD
Private schools often go beyond standard curriculum requirements by offering specialized programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.

FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:
Across many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions.
This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top.
In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity.
Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can
WHO GETS AHEAD?
play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors.
“The
higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system.
As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background - and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.
Raising Resilient Minds: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Education is about far more than exams and grades - it’s about fostering resilience, creativity and the confidence to embrace the unknown. In Berkshire, where rolling hills, meandering rivers and scenic countryside abound, schools are increasingly recognising that adventure and hands-on experiences are just as vital as academic achievement in preparing young people for life beyond the classroom.
A strong academic foundation remains essential. Pupils need the knowledge and skills to think critically, communicate effectively and engage with ideas that shape the world around them. As education expert Alex Standish observes, “School subjects are a way of inducting children into the intellectual habits of humankind and hence into a disciplinary conversation about knowing our world.” Mastering these subjects equips students with the tools to contribute meaningfully - not only in the classroom but also within their communities and beyond.
Yet the lessons learned outside the classroom are equally transformative. Collaboration, adaptability and curiosity are skills that cannot always be measured by a test. At Pangbourne
“A strong academic foundation remains essential”
College academics are paired with an adventurous programme designed to challenge students beyond their comfort zones. From navigating local rivers and hiking through the Chilterns to tackling highropes courses, pupils build resilience, problemsolving abilities and leadership skills. They learn to listen, prioritise collective goals and see both success and setbacks as opportunities to grow.
An adventurous mindset nurtures independence, courage and integrity. By blending academic discipline with real-world experiences, Pangbourne prepares young people not just to succeed in exams, but to thrive in life. They leave equipped to make thoughtful choices, embrace challenges with confidence and contribute positively to the world around them.
Education, ultimately, extends far beyond the classroom. It’s about cultivating curiosity, character and a readiness to explore all that life has to offer - helping young people not only to achieve, but to live fully.

Skinimalism 2.0: The Elevated Return to Effortless Beauty
Less coverage, more intention – 2026’s defining beauty trend refines the “nomakeup makeup” look into something altogether more luxurious, wearable and intelligently curated.
In 2026, beauty is taking a decisive step away from maximalism and heavy transformation, instead embracing what industry insiders are calling Skinimalism 2.0. Building on the pared-back routines that gained traction in recent years, this evolution is less about doing less – and more about doing just enough, exceptionally well.
The aesthetic draws from a blend of influences: the glassy, lit-from-within skin synonymous with Korean beauty, the understated ease of French pharmacy staples, and a broader cultural shift toward wellness, longevity and authenticity. The result is skin that looks like skin – refined, luminous and quietly perfected. Think breathable bases, softly groomed brows and a natural flush that appears to come from within.
What defines this new phase is its precision. Earlier interpretations of minimal beauty often leaned overly casual; Skinimalism 2.0 is more intentional. Texture plays a central role, with
sheer, skin-enhancing formulas replacing heavy foundations. Complexion products are designed to blur rather than conceal, allowing freckles, tone variations and natural contours to remain visible. It is not about covering imperfections, but diffusing them.
Equally important is the shift toward hybrid products. Skincare-infused foundations, serum concealers and balm-like blushers streamline routines while improving skin quality over time. This dual-purpose approach aligns with increasingly busy lifestyles, particularly for those balancing travel, work and social commitments. The routine is efficient, but never rushed in its effect.
Application techniques have also evolved. Fingers are often favoured over brushes, pressing product into the skin for a seamless finish. Concealer is used sparingly – around the eyes, the sides of the nose or on isolated blemishes – rather than applied broadly. Cream textures dominate, melting into the skin and avoiding any sense of buildup. The overall effect is polished but imperceptible.
Crucially, this is a trend defined by accessibility. It does not require professional skill or a lengthy
routine, making it highly adaptable for everyday wear. A well-prepped base remains essential: hydrated, balanced skin ensures that lighter products perform at their best. From there, a simple sequence – sheer base, targeted concealer, subtle colour – creates a look that feels both modern and effortless.
The versatility of Skinimalism 2.0 is part of its appeal. It can be worn to the office, on long-haul flights or for evening occasions with minimal adjustment. A touch of highlighter or a softly defined eye can elevate the look without compromising its core principle of restraint. It is beauty that moves with the wearer, rather than sitting on top of them.
Ultimately, this trend reflects a broader recalibration within luxury. Excess is giving way to refinement, and visibility to subtlety. In a landscape where authenticity is increasingly prized, the most compelling beauty looks are those that enhance rather than obscure. Skinimalism 2.0 captures that shift perfectly – quietly confident, intelligently executed and undeniably modern.

TIMELESS LOCKETS BY DOWER & HALL
Locket necklaces are among the most personal and meaningful pieces of jewellery a person can own. Small and delicate, they act as miniature time capsules, designed to safeguard cherished memories close to the heart.
The history of lockets can be traced back to the Victorian era, when they were worn as romantic amulets suspended from fine chains or soft velvet ribbons. These early designs often held tiny handpainted portraits or even a small lock of hair, offering a discreet and heartfelt way to honour a loved one. Crafted from gold and other precious metals, and frequently embellished with gemstones and intricate engravings, Victorian lockets were both decorative and deeply sentimental.
Today, the tradition continues in a modern context. Locket necklaces are still treasured as keepsakes, commonly used to hold photographs, charms, small notes, or personal mementoes
known only to the wearer. This enduring appeal has secured their place as timeless heirlooms, passed down through generations and imbued with personal meaning.
Handcrafted in our London studio, Dower & Hall’s collection of lockets is designed to celebrate the personal stories that matter most. Each piece is thoughtfully made with longevity in mind, creating jewellery to be cherished now and for years to come.
To make your locket truly your own, you can add personal photographs, which we will carefully resize to fit your chosen design at no extra cost. For an added layer of meaning, our complimentary engraving service allows you to inscribe a name, initials, a significant date, or a heartfelt message. These thoughtful details transform each locket into a unique keepsake, rich with sentiment and personal significance.
More than an accessory, a locket becomes a personal treasure chest - jewellery that carries memories, emotions, and stories wherever you go.

CTHE RISE OF “ELEVATED LOUNGEWEAR” IN 2026
omfort meets sophistication in 2026 with the continued rise of elevated loungewear. While the pandemic initially normalized casual, homefriendly clothing, designers have now reimagined it for the street, office, and social settings. Think knit sets in luxurious yarns, tailored joggers paired with structured blazers, and fluid silhouettes in soft, technical fabrics. The result is a style that is relaxed yet refined – casual dressing with a curated, intentional edge.
Key to the trend is versatility. Pieces are designed to mix seamlessly with wardrobe staples. A cashmere sweatsuit can be paired with leather ankle boots and a sleek coat for a city-ready outfit. Oversized cardigans layered over matching wide-leg trousers create a look that is both cozy and polished. Designers are emphasizing tonal dressing, subtle textures, and muted palettes – soft creams, earthy taupes, and dusty pastels dominate the season.
Fabric choice is central. Silk-blend joggers, brushed cotton sets, and ribbed knits offer comfort without compromising style. Attention to detail – clean seams, structured fits, and understated hardware – elevates casual garments, making them feel intentional rather than lazy. Accessories are minimal but purposeful: delicate
“Silk-blend joggers, brushed cotton sets, and ribbed knits offer comfort without compromising style”
gold chains, classic handbags, and tailored footwear transform loungewear into a street-style statement.
This trend reflects a larger shift in modern wardrobes, where practicality and luxury coexist. For city dwellers, busy professionals, and fashionconscious individuals alike, elevated loungewear offers adaptability without sacrificing aesthetics. It allows wearers to feel at ease while maintaining a sense of polish, perfectly suited for day-to-night transitions, coffee meetings, or casual events.
In 2026, elevated loungewear isn’t just about comfort – it’s about redefining how relaxed dressing can be aspirational, stylish, and effortlessly chic.
How to find the right therapist
Starting therapy is a very important decision. The world of therapy can feel overwhelming. There is no single “best” therapy. You have chosen to meet a new person and invite them to walk beside you through the next period of your life. So how do you find the right guide? How do you know that this therapist is someone with whom you can be vulnerable but still feel safe and protected?
The relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor in a successful therapeutic partnership. You will need to feel comfortable sharing experiences, both past and present. There are several factors involved when choosing a therapist. The first step is to ensure they are qualified, insured and belong to the relevant governing body such as UKCP, BACP or the BPS to name but a few.
Often mental health charities can help or offer advice regarding the best therapists in your area. You can seek a referral through your GP or selfrefer to most private practitioners.
Many therapists offer an initial telephone consultation. This gives you the opportunity to see how you feel while speaking to them. Ask them to explain how they work and the modality that they use. Some of the main ones are:
1. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Focuses on the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
3. Humanistic / Person-Centred Therapy: Emphasises empathy, authenticity, and selfacceptance.
4. Integrative / Eclectic Therapy: Combines techniques from different modalities.
5. Trauma-Focused Approaches (e.g. EMDR, Somatic Therapy): Specialised methods to process trauma safely.
Most importantly do you sense empathy, safety and a desire to help?
Therapy is not a quick fix. Answers won’t come immediately. It is a journey rather than a destination. With the right guide you will become more fully aware of yourself. You will feel enabled, empowered, liberated and more able to live effectively with yourself and others. Choosing the right partner on this journey is critical and will be life changing.

COLLAGEN STIMULATION: A Regenerative Answer to Facial Rejuvenation
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have long been used to restore facial volume and will also improve the quality of the overlying skin. They remain an effective treatment for age-related volume loss. However, concerns about over-correction and the risk of an “over-filled” appearance have led to increasing interest in treatments that enhance skin quality whilst minimising volume replacement. Such an approach is collagen bio-stimulation with Sculptra®. Sculptra contains Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) an injectable biocompatible material with a 20yr history of safe medical use. Unlike traditional fillers, PLLA does not simply add volume. Instead, it works by stimulating the body to produce its own collagen, within the dermis.
than an instant volumising treatment, results develop progressively. Improvements typically become noticeable over 6–12 weeks and continue to evolve thereafter. With appropriate patient selection and treatment planning, results can be sustained for up to 24 months.
At the Cosmetic Doctors Company our treatments are individually tailored following a comprehensive consultation that considers skin quality, degree of collagen loss, anatomical factors and aesthetic goals. Most patients require two treatment sessions spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart, although this is personalised according to need.
Collagen plays a central role in maintaining skin structure, strength and elasticity. From early adulthood, collagen production declines at an estimated rate of around 1% per year. Over time, this contributes to dermal thinning, reduced firmness and the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

THE MAKINGS OF THE MODERN GARDEN
Don’t deny it - we all saw it. Daylight. The first bountiful beams of sun poking through the clouds herald a wave of something we like to call the garden gaze. Those fleeting moments when you catch a glimpse of the space at the back of your home, almost as if it has suddenly appeared: a green, growing landmass you’re seeing for the very first time. Having almost forgotten it, one of the most important areas of your home is about to burst back into life. You utter to yourself, “We need to do something about the garden.”
But what does the modern garden look like? Well, as with every aspect of home design, it depends entirely on you. Still, we thought we’d give you a bit of a cheat sheet. So here are five templates to get you started in growing your style. Different aesthetics that, with the right furniture, will make your outdoor space the ultimate spring hosting spot and the perfect outdoor escape.
MID-CENTURY MASTERS:
If one era of design that will forever have it’s time in the sunlight - metaphorically and physically - then mid-century is it. Classics of the genre have become icons of the present, so much so that outdoor versions of some of the world’s most
beloved designs are now cultivating stylish gardens and cropping up in spaces far beyond even the brilliant imaginations of Eames and Saarinen could have predicted.
Take one of the old masters: Cassina’s Fauteuil Grand Comfort (the sofa formerly known as LC3) is a seating solution that has shaped some of the suavest settings this side of the ’50s, now allowing people to bask in its natural charisma beyond four walls - and beyond the 20th century.
THE ANGLO-CLASSIC:
We’re a bit bonkers about our gardens in this country. With a staggering 85% of us living in urbanised areas, you can understand why we love our personal patches of land so much. It’s likely why the RHS Chelsea Flower Show attracts over 140,000 horticulture enthusiasts each year, all eager to gaze upon its creative floral dioramas. But what makes a stereotypical UK outdoor space? As most of our parents would likely tell us: big flowers, winding trees, about forty forgotten gardening gloves and, of course, enough furniture to fit the entire street when BBQ season comes around.
We find that looking a little further afield and investing in some stunning Scandi furniture, like Gubi or Cane-line, suits the eloquence of the Great British garden perfectly.
THE MODERN MEDITERRANEAN:
Synonymous with good weather, good food andmost importantly - a healthier work/life balance. When you think of a part of the world where people truly know how to enjoy the outdoors, your mind instinctively heads off to Stansted and lands somewhere closer to the equator. If you’re lucky, somewhere on the Mediterranean Sea. So why not bring a slice of the sun a little closer to home? Bring a bold colour palette, break out the good wine and get ready for dining al fresco. Create a modern Mediterranean garden with brands like B&B Italia, Flexform and Foscarini opening up your options all the way from Italy.
JAPANDI JARDIN:
We’ve seen Scandinavian furniture making surprise appearances across the blog so far - so what’s one more? Well, this time it’s taking more of a starring role. Japandi is a clean-yet-stylish interior design
movement that has dominated minimalist abodes for the better part of the 21st century. Now, like all good aesthetics, it has slipped out the back door and settled into the gardens of design fans. Warm timbers, gravel beds and sparsely but thoughtfully placed plant life are the ways to harness the power of both Nordic hygge and Japanese wabi-sabi. When it comes to furnishing your extravagancefree exterior, look to Scandi design brands Carl Hansen and &Tradition, which make a stylish statement at whisper level.
THE FUTURE OF OUTDOOR:
This wouldn’t be a blog about future-proofing your own personal paradise without saving the most relevant of these options for last: futuristic furniture. Characteristics like sleek angles and monochromatic tones define this trend of near scifi futurism. Think the beachfronts of Ibiza meeting the defined lines of the ultra-modern world. Brands like Vondom and Gandia Blasco encapsulate this polished aesthetic with perfection. Blending with sea, sun and sand alike, this is ideal for warmer weather environments. chaplins.co.uk

Gardens Designed for Living
Among the hills and woodlands of Surrey, a garden — whether in town or countryside — is far more than an addition to a house. It is essential part of everyday life and often the very reason of living here: a place for long lunches and meeting with friends, children and dogs spilling outdoors after school, or a quiet morning coffee before the day begins. In a county where landscape and architecture are so closely intertwined, the garden plays a defining role in how a home is experienced.
Yet even the most thoughtfully designed houses can be paired with outdoor spaces that feel incomplete — attractive in parts, but lacking comfort, privacy or a sense of cohesion.
At Scamells Garden Design, every project begins with conversation. Understanding how a garden should feel, how it will be lived in, and how it must perform throughout the seasons shapes everything that follows. The studio’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that a successful garden must respond equally to people and place — to the character of the house, the surrounding landscape
and the patterns of daily life.
Led by Joanna, the studio brings architectural clarity together with naturalistic, low-maintenance planting to create spaces that feel both structured and relaxed. There is a quiet emphasis on proportion, flow and atmosphere — gardens that hold their form in winter and soften in summer, that offer openness where desired and shelter where needed. The intention is never to impose a design, but to allow it to feel as though it has always belonged.
Working across contemporary townhouses and established country homes, the studio undertakes a limited number of projects each year, ensuring close personal involvement and attention to detail throughout. The process is measured and transparent, offering reassurance alongside creative clarity. From early concept through to completion, each stage is carefully managed so that the journey feels seamless as well as considered.
The finished gardens are designed for living — for gathering, unwinding, celebrating and simply stepping outside to breathe. Thoughtful design offers something quietly valuable: a landscape that feels settled, enduring and entirely your own.

Is Your Pool Ready for Spring?
Early preparation sets the tone for the season ahead
As winter gives way to longer days and brighter mornings, spring marks a natural shift back towards outdoor living. Gardens begin to feel usable again, evenings stretch a little further, and attention turns from winter protection to enjoyment. For pool owners, spring is when the pool becomes part of daily life again - calm swims, lighter evenings, and the pleasure of seeing the water back in use.
Early Preparation
Getting a pool ready for spring is not simply a practical exercise; it sets the tone for the entire season ahead. Booking a professional pool opening early allows systems to be carefully recommissioned after winter dormancy, water to be properly balanced, and any issues identified well before regular use begins. Addressing these elements early removes pressure later on, ensuring the pool is ready to enjoy as soon as conditions allow, rather than becoming another task to manage when the weather improves.
When Does Spring Swimming Begin?
One of the most frequently asked questions at this time of year is when outdoor pools can realistically be used again. In the UK, spring
swimming is less about peak temperatures and more about atmosphere and comfort. With thoughtful preparation and sensible temperature management, many pools are enjoyed well before high summer. Spring swimming often feels calmer and more restorative, with quieter mornings and evenings offering a gentler rhythm than the busier months that follow.
After Winter
Even when covered, pools continue to be affected by winter conditions. Reduced circulation, natural debris and fluctuating temperatures can all alter water balance and place subtle strain on equipment. While everything may appear fine at first glance, spring is the moment when professional attention ensures water quality is restored and systems are operating efficiently again, ready for regular use.
Water quality plays a central role in this transition. Starting the season with correctly balanced water protects pool finishes and equipment, enhances swimmer comfort, and reduces the likelihood of algae or clarity issues later on. Getting it right early helps ensure the season progresses smoothly and enjoyably, without unnecessary interruption.
Spring is ultimately about anticipationpreparing now so that enjoyment comes easily later. A well-prepared pool becomes not a project, but a pleasure, ready to take its place once again as part of everyday life.

British-Made Picnic Blankets for Modern Summer Gatherings
As outdoor gatherings become a fixture of modern British summers, Heating & Plumbing London redefines the picnic blanket as a considered design piece rather than a practical afterthought.
Woven in Britain from 100% pure new wool, the collection pairs traditional craftsmanship with distinctive colour combinations from heritageinspired herringbones to bold contemporary weaves. Each blanket is finished with a waterproof backing and a leather shoulder strap, designed for ease of carrying from park to coast.
Generously sized and made to last, the blankets offer warmth even on cooler evenings, bringing structure and comfort to everything from city picnics to countryside escapes.
In recent seasons, picnic blankets have moved beyond utility to become a lifestyle accessory frequently chosen as wedding gifts, housewarming presents and summer essentials for designconscious hosts.
Founder Franck Jehanne comments: “A picnic blanket sets the tone. It’s where people sit, gather and stay.”

Shaping Homes Across Surrey, Sussex and London
Tucked away in the heart of the South East, where craftsmanship still carries quiet authority, Acorn Bespoke Carpentry and Joinery stands as a reminder that true skill never goes out of style. Established 20 years ago in Surrey by master carpenter and cabinetmaker Thomas Streeter, the company has built a reputation that extends across Surrey, Sussex, and London, driven by consistently exceptional work.
What distinguishes Acorn is its resolute commitment to bespoke design. In an age of mass production, there’s something deeply reassuring about a workshop dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind pieces, tailored precisely to the homes and lifestyles they inhabit. Whether it’s fitted furniture designed to maximise space or intricate architectural joinery that defines a room’s character, every commission reflects a level of care
and attention that’s increasingly rare.
At the centre of the business is Thomas. Unlike many founders who step back from dayto-day operations as their companies grow, he remains closely involved throughout. From the first conversation with a client through to the final installation. That continuity is evident in the finished product. There’s a cohesion, a sense that nothing has been lost in translation between the design and execution.
Acorn’s clientele is as telling as its craftsmanship. Alongside discerning private homeowners, the company collaborates with some of the country’s leading interior designers, architects and builders. These partnerships speak volumes; in industries where reputation is everything, Acorn has become a trusted name for those who expect precision and reliability.
The result is a business that balances heritage craftsmanship with contemporary expectations. Projects are delivered on time, to exacting standards, yet retain the unmistakable mark of handmade quality. In a region with rich heritage and design-conscious homeowners, Acorn Bespoke Carpentry and Joinery feels perfectly at home, shaping interiors built not just to impress, but to last.

DISCOVER MUSE THE NEW TILE FROM PORCELAIN SUPERSTORE
Independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore is putting a 21st century spin on a classic tiling trend in a new five-strong collection. Introducing Muse.
Inspired by Amazon marble, a natural stone renowned for its distinctive green and white detailing, the Muse collection oozes refined luxury.
Typified by stunning veining and beautiful variation between tiles, the collection is anchored in elegance and authenticity.
At the heart of the collection is Muse Emerald, a deep green with copper detailing, and Muse Bianco – a creamy white with swirls of grey and gold throughout.
Muse Checkerboard brings together both Emerald and Bianco to offer a more opulent take on chequered flooring, while Muse Alba and Muse Décor boast striking geometrics to create statement patterns.
Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Muse ticks all the boxes. It has the timeless elegance of classic marble, but with its bold hues and strong geometrics, it brings indulgence and personality wherever it is used.
“It’s an incredibly versatile collection too, and homeowners can combine patterned and plain tiles
to create distinctive schemes for different spaces within the home.
“Marble is an enduring trend and Muse leans into its classic nature while bringing the look right up to date.”
Crafted from hardwearing Italian porcelain, Muse is suitable for all areas of the home and can be used on both walls and floors.

THE PROPERTY BLACK BOOK THE NETWORKING GROUP
BUSINESS OWNERS TRULY ENJOY
The Property Black Book was founded by Lisa Nott and Jeevan Gill with one goal in mind, to create the kind of networking group they wished already existed. Designed specifically for SME business owners working in the property and construction sectors, it’s quickly grown into a trusted community where genuine relationships, collaborations and opportunities flourish. Lisa and Jeevan reveal why so many members now see it as the only networking group they really need.
Why did you start the Property Black Book (PBB)?
Honestly, because we were fed up. We’d both spent years attending networking events that took up huge chunks of the day, involved long journeys and plenty of expense, but rarely led to the right conversations. We’d come home exhausted with a stack of business cards and the sinking feeling that none of it was going to lead anywhere. As business owners, we knew there had to be a better use of our time.
What did you create instead?
We wanted to provide rooms filled with professionals relevant to our sector. So, we launched the Property Black Book in 2023 as a networking group exclusively for business owners and decision-makers offering services within the property and construction sectors. That focus means conversations are always relevant, real friendships flourish, and any opportunities that arise are far more valuable.
What makes it different?
It’s relaxed, friendly and genuinely useful. There are no presentations or awkward sales pitches. Relationships build organically, and we carefully vet everyone who attends because we respect the time our members are sharing with us. Our members talk honestly about business, projects, challenges and wins, which is why trust builds so quickly.
What kind of results are members seeing?
The work passed between members has already reached multiple seven figures, but the real value goes far beyond referrals. Members strengthen their supply chains, solve problems together and often become each other’s trusted go-to people. We’ve seen major projects rescued, resources shared, and collaborations created that simply wouldn’t have happened elsewhere.
What other benefits do members enjoy?
Alongside the monthly meetings and informal ‘after dark’ dinners, each of our three county groups has an active WhatsApp community where advice, introductions and opportunities are shared between events. Carefully selected guests are also invited to our meetings, and members can visit other branches during the year. We also host combined group social events throughout the year, such as our Spring Axe Throwing and Street Food night, which is already fully booked. The PBB is exactly what we were searching for, and it just keeps getting better and better.

Meet the PBB Member:
Award-winning Interior Designer Karen Chapman
Founder of Renaissance Interiors Hartley Wintney
As a founding member of the Property Black Book, Karen says the PBB has become an invaluable, supportive extension of her professional network. ‘If there’s a gap in my black book, somebody in the group will know someone who can fill it.’
Karen, you’ve been in interior design for over 35 years. How did it all begin?
I originally trained in theatre and television, with ambitions of becoming a film director. It was during this time that my love of storytelling truly took shape, and after graduating, I joined a company specialising in hand-finished curtains. I quickly found myself drawn to the transformation of space, and what began as an interest soon became a calling. I continued to develop my skills, and in January 1991, I launched Renaissance Interiors. I now lead a talented team from our full-service design studio and showroom, where everything we do is rooted in storytelling, craftsmanship and a genuine understanding of how people want to live.
Many people think interior design is purely about aesthetics. What’s the reality? I always start with the practical before the aesthetics. Good design is about how you live, the
flow of a space, lighting and placement. Every scenario needs to be considered before a single brick is laid, because getting the basics wrong ultimately affects the entire scheme.
When is the right time to bring an interior designer on board?
Ideally, at the architectural stage. The earlier we’re involved, the more value we can add and the better your end results will be.
What’s the biggest misconception about working with an interior designer?
That we’ll bully you into things you don’t want. Our approach is incredibly collaborative, sharing every stage with you and offering full 3D renders enables you to see exactly how a space will look before anything is purchased. We’re in the happiness business. Our job is to listen and create a space that reflects you, not us.
How do you help clients invest wisely?
We work in stages, so you’re never committed to more than you’re comfortable with. A free, noobligation discovery call is always the first step, and a simple consultation starts at a couple of hundred pounds. Our job is to help you choose wisely and give you that final magic ‘Ta Dah’ moment you’ve been waiting for.

Meet the PBB Member:
James Winnister Founder of J-Tech Systems
James Winnister joined The Property Black Book about 18 months ago, having seen a post on LinkedIn. Keen to build stronger local connections, James says, ‘It’s been amazing for me and meeting members working across the industry gives me an ongoing picture of where the market’s heading.’ The other members also benefit from James’ experience. Here’s what he has to say about his own business…
J-Tech Systems has been protecting homes and businesses since 2008. How did the company begin?
I was 23, heading up a fire commissioning team in London for a large national provider, but I wasn’t being challenged. I had a passion for integrated
systems, technology and engineered solutions, so I took a leap and started J-Tech from my kitchen table with a little savings and a rented van. What began as a one-man operation has grown into a 16-strong team delivering projects across London and the South East. We specialise in luxury residential and retail environments and, supported by our expert electrical team, cover everything from the design, installation and monitoring of fire and security solutions to sophisticated audio-visual systems.
“What began as a one-man operation has grown into a 16-strong team”
You pride yourself on offering all these services from one expert hub. Why does that matter to clients?
Too often, we’re brought in after systems have been designed in isolation, which leads to clashes, rework and unnecessary cost. Our unified, brand agnostic, approach supported by our expert staff avoids that entirely as we work with architects, interior designers and clients to ensure every system is compatible and seamlessly integrated. Everything we do is designed to make our clients’ lives easier. Every project has a designated Project Manager and, due to the number of expert services we provide, a single consolidated solution.
Your clients include some very high-profile names. How do you ensure the level of discretion and expertise they require?
Trust is everything in this industry. Every member of our team is screened to the highest security standards, and every client we serve receives a white-glove service and complete privacy. Discretion isn’t optional, it’s embedded in how we operate. We also work with numerous luxury brands, including Christian Dior, Diptyque and Burberry, and ensure our staff receive continuous professional development to stay abreast of the latest technology, regulations and practice.
A lot of people assume security, fire and audio-visual systems have to look bulky or intrusive. How do you solve that?
That’s one of our key focuses and we work hard to ensure you don’t notice the technology at all. We co-ordinate closely with architects and interior designers to conceal infrastructure within the building fabric and give you everything you need without compromising design. Technology should always enhance your space, not dominate it.
Superior project management and aftercare set
J-Tech apart. Can you explain how?
These two elements are the backbone of everything we do, and too often, they’re treated as afterthoughts, which always causes problems. The most successful projects in our experience occur when we’re engaged from RIBA Stage 3 onwards and become an integral part of our client’s team. But our commitment doesn’t end when the project does. We look at the whole life cycle of every system we install, offering comprehensive aftercare
“Trust is everything in this industry. Every member of our team is screened to the highest security standards, and every client we serve receives a whiteglove service and complete privacy”
packages that include planned preventative maintenance, a guaranteed four-hour reactive response around the clock, and remote monitoring that allows us to proactively identify and resolve issues before a client’s even aware of a problem. Our ongoing aftercare also ensures every system continues to work seamlessly for years to come and many of our clients have been with us for 10 years or more.
How does your technology help you stay ahead of problems?
Cloud connectivity allows us to identify and resolve issues before they become visible problems, often without the need for a site visit. This minimises disruption and ensures systems remain fully operational at all times. We also provide regular overviews and monitor components throughout a systems life cycle, so ageing hardware is flagged well in advance, allowing our clients to plan and budget accordingly rather than face unexpected failures.
For anyone considering an upgrade to their fire, security, or audio-visual systems, what’s the best first step?
Simply get in touch and mention this feature, or book a free consultation through our website, to review your current setup or discover how we can create a bespoke system to suit your space, budget and lifestyle.

Portrait by Debbie Hare Photography
Meet the PBB Member
Debbie Hare
Professional Branding and Interiors Photographer
Based in Ascot, Debbie specialises in interior and branding photography and has a warmth and professionalism that makes her clients, and fellow PBB members, feel at ease in front of her camera.
Debbie, you have a BA Honours in Photography and are an Associate Member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers. How did you find your way into interior photography?
During my early fashion and still-life studio photography training, I learnt to analyse a space from a photographer’s perspective and notice what’s working or needs changing. It’s a skill that translates perfectly into interior photography, and the smallest adjustment can have a big impact on the finished image. Interior photography is never just about documenting a space, it’s about showing it at its absolute best.
Interior photography looks effortless when it’s done well. What’s actually happening behind the scenes?
More than most people realise! It’s about the time of day, natural light, colour temperature and taking multiple exposures - for the darkest point, the lightest and the mid tones - then combining them to create a perfectly balanced image. Capturing all the elements is what separates a truly beautiful
interior shot from an image that feels lifeless. It’s technical, time-consuming work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.
Why does professional photography matter so much when marketing a property or design project?
Whether you’re trying to sell your services, highlight a project or sell a property, great photography does something far more powerful than simply showing a beautiful room. It captures the atmosphere of a space and helps tell the story of the people behind the project, their skill, vision, personality and attention to detail. It gives potential clients an immediate sense of your work and helps them connect with it.
Who do you love working with?
Anyone who values great imagery! Interior designers, architects, developers and brands who understand that having a strong library of professional photos gives them assets to use across their website, social media and editorial features, and helps them attract the right clients long after a project is complete.
How do people get started?
Just give me a call or send me a message via my website and mention this feature. I’d love to hear about your project!
What Do Your Photos Say About You and Your Business?
If your honest answer is ‘I’m not sure’, then it’s time to talk to Debbie Hare. Because the right photography doesn’t just make you look good, it tells your story, showcases your expertise and gives potential clients an instant reason to choose you over everyone else.
With a BA Honours in Photography and Associate Membership of the British Institute of Professional Photographers, Debbie brings exceptional expertise, a brilliant eye for detail and a warm, relaxed approach that puts you at ease from the moment you meet. Working with interior designers, property professionals and business owners across Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire, Debbie creates authentic, elegant imagery that connects, resonates and attracts exactly the right clients to your business. Mention this feature when you get in touch, and Debbie will happily listen to your needs and chat through how she can help tell your story.
Meet the PBB Member:
Rachael Hale Award-winning Property, Construction, Garden and Home Interiors Copywriter
Rachael has been a PBB member for nearly two years and happily admits that it’s completely changed her feelings on networking. As the writer behind this feature, she says that getting to shine a spotlight on her fellow PBB members has been a wonderful reminder of just how much expertise, passion and talent exists within the group.
You describe yourself as a copywriter for the property and interiors sector. What makes you different from a general copywriter?
Probably my childhood! I grew up in a 17thcentury cottage that had a demolition order on it when my parents bought it, so scaffolding, moving walls, holes in the floor and a cement mixer in the dining room were part of everyday life. Living through that transformation sparked my love of property and interiors, and although I started writing professionally in 2011, I haven’t written about anything else since 2018. Add in the complete renovation of my own home, a City & Guilds qualification in interior design,
and experience writing for The Telegraph, The Independent and brands including Argos, Habitat and Tapi Carpets, and this really is a world I understand from every angle.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
It’s definitely the people I work with. Every business has a unique history, a brilliant team and a stream of projects worth shouting about, and I love going behind the scenes to discover and share those stories. Because it’s by talking openly about their services, highlights and the challenges they’ve overcome that businesses truly connect and resonate with the clients they want to work with.
Who do you write for, and what do you write?
I write for designers, developers, architects, and contractors across the property, construction, garden, and home interiors sectors. My clients are brilliant at what they do, but don’t always have the time or find it easy to write about themselves. Completed projects are your most powerful marketing tool, and my job is to make sure the right people know you exist through compelling website copy, editorial features, blog posts, case studies, and advertorial content that showcase your expertise, fuel your social media, and help you attract new clients.

Being Great at What You Do Doesn’t Guarantee Anyone Will Notice
You’re reading this feature right now, and so are hundreds of other property and interiors professionals, potential clients and decision makers just like you. Which raises an important question: when those same people go looking for someone with your expertise, will they find you?
Because if you’re brilliant at what you do but struggling to find the time or the words to talk about it, you’re probably missing opportunities every single day. Your beautiful projects will be overlooked, your expertise unnoticed, and your hard-won experience will be invisible to the people who want to hire you.
Your business doesn’t need to be seen everywhere, every day, however, it needs to be consistently seen in the right places, by the people who are most likely to hire you. And that’s exactly how award-winning copywriter Rachael Hale can help.
Rachael works exclusively with designers, developers, architects, and contractors across the property, construction, garden, and home interiors sector. She takes the time to fully understand your business, your goals and your ideal clients before getting to work. The result is compelling content that helps you build your visibility, attract new clients and keep the work flowing, so you can concentrate on what you do best.

Meet the PBB Member
Ian Baker – Managing Director of Property Finance Hub Limited
When it comes to property finance, Ian Baker is the person PBB members call first. With over 30 years of financial service experience, Ian has a reputation for cutting through jargon and guiding clients through even the most complex financial decisions with a friendly, down-to-earth approach.
Ian, people often describe you as the go-to person for property finance. How did you gain that reputation?
It comes down to two things, access and communication. I’ve always believed financial advice should be clear, jargon-free and genuinely tailored to the individual sitting in front of me. I use plain language and real-world analogies, and take the time to truly understand what a client needs before I start looking at solutions.
Property finance can feel overwhelming, so it’s my job to make it feel straightforward, regardless of the complexity behind the scenes, and that commitment to clarity and care never changes.
Aside from standard residential mortgages, you also specialise in buy-to-let mortgages. What should first-time landlords be aware of before taking the plunge?
That it’s not just the initial finance figures that matter. It’s the running costs, the new landlord legislation and tenant protections that people need to understand first. I always say think of a second-hand property like a second-hand car, it needs maintenance, throws up surprises and is generally more expensive than people expect. Knowing exactly what expenses you’re facing beforehand can make a huge difference to your bottom line.
“I’ve always believed financial advice should be clear, jargon-free and genuinely tailored to the individual sitting in front of me”
You also work with high-net-worth clients. How do you manage their additional requirements?
High-net-worth clients often have income in multiple forms - share options, foreign-currency earnings, liquid assets, or pension funds/ investments - and it takes real expertise to structure a mortgage around that. We work closely with our clients and their accountants to find the most effective solution, and it’s rarely resolved in a single meeting. These are complex, bespoke arrangements that require proper time and attention, and we treat them as such.
Financial protection is something you feel strongly about. Why should homeowners and landlords consider it alongside their mortgage?
Because from the minute you take on a new liability, anything can happen. A gap in cover, even a short one, can cause real problems very quickly. We also advise on structuring policies within a Trust, which means the funds sit outside an estate, bypass probate entirely and reach the people who need them far faster than most people realise.
Is there a common mistake you see homeowners making?
“Far too many people reach for loans or credit cards to fund home improvements, which are the most expensive options available”
Far too many people reach for loans or credit cards to fund home improvements, which are the most expensive options available. Speaking to us first means we can structure the funding properly, build in a sensible buffer and help you achieve the finish you actually want, rather than making cutbacks on the final touches because your budget has run out.*
And finally, when should people start thinking about remortgaging?
Much earlier than most people realise. We typically contact clients six to nine months before their rate expires because markets can shift quickly, and having that extra time means we can secure the most suitable deal for you, rather than scrambling for a last-minute solution which may or may not be more expensive.
It’s one of the reasons our aftercare service matters so much. Our involvement doesn’t stop when the deal goes through, it continues throughout the term of your mortgage/policy to ensure you always have the advice and support you need to make the best choices.

Avenue&Acre by lights&lamps
Lights&lamps has the pleasure of introducing their latest collection.
Embracing traditional design cues, Niki Wright and Scarlett Hampton take on the classics and add updates synonymous with the handwriting of their current collections.
Avenue&Acre is a collection of 75 new lights and lamps: designed, detailed and carefully curated.
The collection builds on the current styling of lights&lamps and further enhances it with a level of maturity a kin to a more traditional “town and country” customer.
“We use the word “traditional” loosely”, explains Hampton. “We have taken elements of more classical shapes and forms and exaggerated them, refreshed them and paired them with details that will make them last for another century”.
A library of classics revived; updated forms with heritage detailing, our all new collection is traditional by design.
Bridging traditional & modern
There is something for everyone and every home, from country cottages to towering townhouses, for curling up by the fire or entertaining dinner guests.
Avenue&Acre bridges both traditional and modern design so every piece looks just at home, wherever that may be…
The sense of calm
“People come to us for beautiful, original and well considered lighting products” reflects Wright, “we play with materials, shapes and scale to create interesting, elegant and surprisingly versatile pieces. We concentrate on the feeling that lighting can create: the sense of calm and a slower pace that can be experienced as you sit and relax under the warm glow of a lamp”.
Material focus
The new collection uses materials and textures which lights&lamps are best known for, but for Avenue&Acre the palette of materials is elevated even further with Rosso marble, solid cast metals, real silks and vintage prints.
The enduring allure of chandeliers
Sculptural centrepieces
Each statement chandelier in our new collection is conceived not simply as lighting but as a signature and an expression of identity and refined taste. Our latest sculptural chandeliers have been reimagined through contemporary design language, blending, natural forms, artisanal techniques and advanced engineering. We’ve used hand-blown glass, soft, pleated linens, brushed metals and bespoke finishes together with bold, architectural forms to produce a collection of ceiling lights that command attention even before they are lit.
Vintage prints – Majestic florals
Refined and evocative, our latest printed fabric collection is inspired by the enduring beauty of vintage floral prints, reinterpreted through a contemporary, elevated lens. Drawing from archival textiles, antique wallpapers and handpainted botanical studies, each design celebrates the artistry and restraint of historic florals - softly layered, exquisitely detailed and rich with nuance. A sophisticated palette of muted hues and gentle contrasts lends the collection a sense of quiet luxury, while subtle textures echo the character of time-worn fabrics. These prints are intended to feel timeless, graceful and effortlessly elegant. We have paired with simple lampshade

shapes and metallic metal finishes to enrich any interior space and home. These lights and lamps from our Avenue&Acre collection offer a refined foundation for pieces intended to be cherished for years to come.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!
Light doesn’t just change how a space looks. It changes how you feel within it.
Light sharpens focus, softens mood, and shapes the energy of a room in ways that are often felt before they are consciously understood. And yet, in many homes, light is treated as something to manage rather than something to design with.
At BAYA Interiors, light is where everything begins. Not as an aesthetic layer, but as a tool to shape experience - influencing how we move, think, rest and connect. Because the most powerful interiors don’t just hold objects - they hold emotion.
As spring brings longer days and a natural shift in rhythm, it offers a moment to reconsider not just how a home looks, but how it performs. Lighter living isn’t about stripping things back or playing it safe. It’s about creating clarity, and designing spaces that allow the mind to settle and the body to relax.
As Creative Director Karl Openshaw puts it, “People often think lightness means less - less colour, less texture, less presence. But for us, it’s the opposite. It’s about using light to unlock a space. To stretch it, heighten it, and give it energy. When you get it right, a room doesn’t just feel brighter - it feels freer. You think more clearly. You move differently. You want to be in it.”
This is where BAYA takes a different view. Lightness isn’t minimal. It’s intentional. It’s created through the interplay of surface, texture and colour, and how each responds to light throughout the day. A mirrored wall doesn’t just reflect a room, it expands it, doubling sightlines and amplifying natural brightness in a way that shifts perception. Polished metals catch movement and flicker with energy, bringing a subtle dynamism to otherwise still spaces. Soft matte finishes absorb light, grounding
a room and creating moments of pause.
The considered use natural light plays a central role in this choreography. As Openshaw adds, “Natural light is one of the most defining, and often overlooked, elements of any interior. Before settling on colours, materials, or finishes, it’s essential to observe and understand how light moves through a space across the day - which direction it faces, how it shifts, and how the room is practically lived in. When you factor in these nuances, you have the foundations to build a scheme that truly responds to the space.”
At Prince of Wales Drive, this approach manifests in a dialogue between interior and landscape. Natural wood and green glass accents don’t just reference the surrounding parklandthey draw it inward, allowing light to carry that connection through the apartment. As daylight shifts, so too does the atmosphere: bright and energising in the morning, softer and more restorative by evening. The space adapts to the rhythm of the day, supporting different states of mind without needing to be reconfigured.
At Powerhouse, Chelsea Waterfront, light is used to animate materiality. Rippled bronze, high-gloss finishes and sculptural forms don’t sit quietly - they interact with light, creating movement, reflection and depth.
This is the difference between designing a space and designing an experience.
When light is used strategically - extended through glazing, amplified through reflective
“Lightness in design isn’t just about brightness, it’s about how a space makes you feel”
surfaces, softened through texture - it doesn’t just brighten a room. It changes how that room is inhabited. Spaces feel more open, but also more intuitive. There is less friction, less visual noise. A sense of ease emerges, not by accident, but by design.
As Managing Director Philippa Simoson reflects, “Lightness in design isn’t just about brightness, it’s about how a space makes you feel. When rooms are given space to breathe, and materials are used with intent, a home begins to support you in a more instinctive wayencouraging calm, clarity and presence.”
For homeowners, this isn’t about following a seasonal trend. It’s about understanding how their environment shapes their everyday experience. Where light falls, how surfaces respond, and how a space holds them, or holds them back.
Because the most meaningful transformation isn’t always about adding more. Sometimes, it’s about creating just enough space for light to move, for energy to shift, and for life to feel lighter in every sense.

The Hidden Life of Your Carpets - and Why It Matters
Carpets do more than soften footsteps and complete a room – they quietly collect the story of everyday life. From the dust carried in on shoes to the invisible particles drifting through the air, they act as a filter within the home. Over time, however, this role comes at a cost. Beneath their surface, carpets can harbour a complex mix of dirt, allergens, and bacteria that regular cleaning simply cannot reach.
What may appear to be a purely cosmetic concern is, in reality, something far more significant. Poorly maintained carpets can affect the overall hygiene of a living space, contributing to respiratory irritation, allergies, and discomfort. For households seeking a truly clean and healthy environment, surface-level care is rarely enough.
Professional carpet cleaning offers a deeper solution – one that goes beyond what supermarket products and domestic machines can achieve. Using specialised equipment and carefully developed techniques, trained experts are able to lift stubborn dirt and embedded contaminants from deep within the fibres. The transformation is not only visible but tangible, restoring freshness while improving the air you breathe every day.
There is also a quieter, often overlooked benefit:
preservation. Carpets represent a meaningful investment, yet their longevity is constantly threatened by abrasive particles that wear down fibres over time. Without intervention, even highquality carpets can lose their structure, becoming flattened and tired. Regular professional care protects against this gradual deterioration, helping carpets retain their texture, colour, and resilience. Of course, no two surfaces are the same. From delicate upholstery fabrics to robust flooring, each material demands a tailored approach. Understanding these differences is what separates routine cleaning from truly effective care –ensuring every surface is treated with precision, and without risk of damage.
In the end, professional carpet cleaning is not simply about appearance. It is about creating a healthier home, preserving what you own, and maintaining a space that feels as clean as it looks. carpetbird.co.uk

The New Statement Entrance: Why Front Doors Are Taking Centre Stage
In London’s evolving architectural landscape - from contemporary townhouses to reimagined period homes - the entrance is becoming far more than a point of access. It is now a defining feature, setting the tone for the entire property.
At Inspiration Doors, we believe a front door should do more than complement a home - it should define it. It is the first impression, the focal point, and increasingly, a reflection of the people who live behind it.
This shift is being driven by a growing desire for individuality. Homeowners are moving away from standardised designs and looking instead for something that feels personal and considered. The entrance has become an opportunity to create a statement - not just in scale, but in character.
Oversized pivot doors, minimal detailing, and integrated glazing are now central to modern design. But it is material that truly sets these entrances apart. Finishes such as oxidised metal and patina bronze introduce depth, texture, and subtle variation that cannot be replicated. These are not static surfaces - they respond to light, environment, and time.
The result is something genuinely unique. No two doors are ever the same - no one else in the
world will have a door like it.
Of course, this level of design must be matched by performance. In a city environment, security, thermal efficiency, and durability are essential. The challenge lies in delivering this without compromising on aesthetics - ensuring that the door performs as beautifully as it looks.
As architecture continues to evolve, the entrance is no longer an afterthought. It is a statement of intent - a balance of design, craftsmanship, and individuality.
At Inspiration Doors, that philosophy is at the core of everything we create: doors that are not just seen, but remembered. Visit inspirationdoors.co.uk Email hello@inspirationdoors.co.uk

The Drop - The Design Remix
Music has always shaped how we feel in a space. It sets the mood, shifts the tempo and creates atmosphere without being seen. With The Drop, Cult set out to capture that same emotional resonance through furniture, translating sound into form, rhythm into material, and nostalgia into modern living.
At the heart of the collection is a belief that interiors are a form of self-expression. Just as putting on a favourite record is an intentional pause; a moment to slow down, recalibrate and reconnect, furniture should offer the same feeling. Not only functional, but transformative.
Inspired by 70s revival design, the collection explores contrast with confidence enhanced by 80’s inspired styling. Brushed chrome sits alongside plush velvets, textured bouclé compliments smooth walnut-stained wood, and sculptural silhouettes are balanced by relaxed proportions. These juxtapositions reflect how we live today, mixing eras, materials and moods with ease. These subtle nods to different musical decades throughout the collection reinforce the idea that timeless design, like great music, transcends trends. Colour is equally intentional. Walnut and espresso browns ground the collection, providing warmth and cohesion across statement pieces, like the Harrison and Viva Accent chairs. Earthy moss greens and caramel tones add depth, while burgundies and lighter stone hues lift and balance the palette.
With The Drop, Cult invites you to experience interiors differently. Furniture owns the frame. Music sets the tempo, and design becomes the soundtrack to modern living. cultfurniture.com
