DRIVING A CLASSIC BARGAIN Jason Harden, Insurance Executive at Scrutton Bland looks at whether classic cars are a good investment – and the insurance options to consider within this specialist area

W

ith low interest rates proving bad news for many savers, many people are now looking for alternative ideas for investment options. Whilst art, gold and diamonds have been seen by some as alternatives to stocks and shares, it is a little known fact that in recent years some classic cars have outperformed the traditional alternative investments. e term ‘classic’ is a much discussed point in the car collecting world. Some collectors believe a ‘classic’ to be pre-1973 (which is the current age at which road tax exemption officially kicks in) whilst others believe a classic car is anything 25 years and older – classic car insurance can apply when a car is over 20 years old. But the one thing that almost all car lovers agree about is that for a car to be truly classic, it must be able to prove its worth in terms of design. According to one report, the value of classic cars rose by 17% over the past two years, and certain brands and models have rocketed in value. ree years ago one of my clients bought a 1968 Mercedes SL for £48,000 which is now valued in excess of £80,000, and even some 1980s cars like the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth are worth up to £40,000. However – before you dash off to the next classic car auction, there are some important points to consider. Firstly, and obviously, do your research. As with any specialist area of investment, there are pitfalls to watch out for, not least the condition of the car at the point of purchase. Whilst a car maybe a design classic, it is also old and may require extensive work before it is ready to drive. e cost of repairs and restoration can quickly escalate to overtake the rate of increase in the value of the car, so 8

M AY 2 0 1 7

before buying the vehicle, make sure you are aware of any work which is required. e other big considerations are storage and insurance. Ideally classic cars should be kept in covered, secure conditions, preferably temperature controlled, and it is important to check your insurance policy wording as there may be restrictions which apply; your broker can tell you more. Your insurance broker can also help you with locating the kind of breakdown cover you will need, and explain the legal costs that are covered with your policy. ink carefully about the kind of driving you will be doing. Classic cars are rarely used as an everyday drive, and your broker can advise on any discounts available for reduced mileage, and also any extra coverage required for special journeys such as driving holidays abroad. Your broker can also advise you if there are specialist policies available, for example those which cover both classic and modern vehicles, so that you can insure your everyday and classic car on the same policy. Finally, think about whether you need extra options such as key replacement cover and cover for authentic replacement parts – both are obviously major costs for rare vehicles. is is not an area where cheap generic spares will do the job. n

OAK-TREE SCHOOLS’

PUPILS TAKE A BOW

T

he Oak-Tree Group - Braeside, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands Schools - are four privately-owned independent schools in the Epping Forest area. Among many other attributes, its pupils benefit from collaborating with similar-aged pupils from the Group for a variety of activities and special events. In terms of competition last term there was an inter-school Maths Challenge and Group cross country races, while children worked together on events such as the WE Day, Young Artists exhibition at Loughton gallery, World Book Day with visiting authors and a joint Ski Trip in Italy for some of the older children. ere were so many highlights from last term, but the main event was e Oak-Tree Festival of Music & Dance. THE OAK-TREE MUSIC & DANCE FESTIVAL All four of the Oak-Tree Schools came together on Wednesday 29 March for one of the biggest events in the school calendar. Pupils, teachers and parents had been eagerly awaiting this ambitious project held at the 1000-seat Walthamstow Assembly Hall, and it was a tremendous success. Children and staff had been preparing their pieces since the start of term. e majority of children from the four schools’ Years 3 to 6 took to the stage, as well as many of the Braeside and Normanhurst pupils from Years 7 to 11. Well over 300 pupils took part, coming together for a powerful joint choir at the start and end of the show. e programme was lively and very varied with singing performances, dances, an orchestra, rock bands, joint ukulele group and much more. e children enjoyed performing to 1 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

such a large audience and on stage in a venue as grand as the Walthamstow Assembly Hall, and it turned out to be an exceptional evening that helped to showcase the incredible talents of the pupils from the Oak-Tree Schools. Starting with a 300+ pupil choir performing a rousing rendition of ‘Maliswe’, other highlights included a mesmerising acrobatic performance by Normanhurst dancers, a large Oaklands choir performing a medley of songs from ‘Oliver’ and the Braeside Senior Band’s rendition of ‘Rich Rhythm’. Coopersale Hall’s dance group superbly choreographed their ‘Footloose’ dance, and the grand finale by the combined choirs of all four schools singing a contemporary pop medley. Oak-Tree Group Principal Matthew Hagger recognised the huge achievement by all the pupils and the dedication of the staff who worked so hard to coordinate such a spectacular event with so many participants. One proud parent commented afterwards; “e singers, dancers and players were all fantastic. For us there were many high points, including the girls from Braeside singing ‘Seasons of Love’. We were moved to tears when the Normanhurst Senior Band sang ‘Girl Put Your Records On’. It was amazing that such young children could sing so beautifully, and confidently, in front of an audience of that size. Unbelievable…!” n

S, C N MACAROONS, MONT BLANC AND MACRON WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

P

aris has always promoted itself as the City of Love. Romantic and fun, stylish and care-free; whether a weekend away or simply enjoying a Mille Feuille with an espresso at an outdoor café on an exquisite boulevard. Excited and ready to savour the sumptuous delights, with comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a smile, my friend and I pottered along the boulevards in eager anticipation of the treat… of all treats. Angelinas at 226 Rue de Rivoli for north African hot chocolate and a Mont Blanc cake. Situated in the 1st Arrondiseement of Paris, the Belle Epoque tea house was designed by French architect Edouard-Jean Niermans and has been frequented by the pinnacle of Parisian society including Marcel Proust and Coco Chanel. e setting is absolutely fabulous and the food is legendary. Paris at its culinary and sugary best has to be Angelinas. Walking off the billions of calories and that slightly sick feeling that chestnut puree is more than capable of producing, necessitates a brisk stroll through the parks or along the Seine; sight-seeing, window shopping, people watching and until you feel tired and in need of some form of refreshment. It is very easy to be again tempted by another naughty indulgence… Macaroons. (And don’t even try the ones from M&S – the cakes may look the same as the genuine model but they are a far cry from that ‘real’ taste sensation). Trekking for macaroons, there really is only one place… Laduree on the Champs Elysees. ey are yet another ‘must have’ if going to Paris. In every flavour imaginable, the macaroons are an angelic delight and are available in a full range of flavours such as salted caramel, rose, lemon, pistachio, chocolate, blackcurrant, even liquorice. (If you can’t get to Paris, Laduree are also in

1 6 M AY 2 0 1 7

Harrods and have a small shop in Burlington Arcade near Green Park). en to attempt yet again, walking off the billions, mega-trillions of calories with some cultural exploration…a Paris sight-seeing tour: Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and of course, the Louvre. (e Louvre is very near to Angelinas). So if combining love and macaroons, this feature wouldn’t be complete without reference to the French Presidential hopeful, a man whose name looks vaguely like macaroon – Emmanuel Macron. In a city that promotes itself on passion, despite Macron’s campaign and politics, he is probably more famous for the relationship with his wife Brigitte. ey met when he was fifteen and she was thirty-nine and married with three children. She was also his drama teacher and her daughter was in Emmanuel’s class at school. Emmanuel was smitten and told Brigitte they would eventually marry… she dismissed it but he was persistent. When he was seventeen, their relationship was formalised. ey have now been married twenty-four years and appear to be very happy. How romantic and very Guy de Maupassant. Ironically, there is the same age disparity as Melania and Donald Trump however with a gender reversal. As a woman of maturing years myself, my personal thoughts are Bon Chance to Monsieur Macron and may handsome men, always find older women more attractive than their younger competition.

TRAVELLING SAFELY WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

A

s a veteran traveller, just a few simple tips ‘n tricks can make the difference between a dream vacation as compared to the holiday from hell… • Always know the expiration date of your passport (and family). At least nine months before it is due to expire, ensure the date is in your diary and allow a few months to get the new one. ere’s always a delay such as getting the right photograph, making sure you don’t need it whilst organising the replacement. Most countries will not allow you to travel if there isn’t a minimum of six months left so be aware of the dates. e post office offer a service whereby they will check your application which although it has a cost, does ensure that your application goes through easily. • When travelling – make a one page checklist that includes: - Your travel dates - Your hotel - e credit cards you will be taking with you - Your travel insurance number and contacts - Your (and whoever is travelling with you) passport details. GIVE THIS LIST TO A TRUSTED AND RESPONSIBLE ADULT. - As part of the compilation of your holiday details, ensure that somewhere, there is a note of an emergency contact in the event of you or a member of your party, having a problem.

2 0 M AY 2 0 1 7

If your cards and/or passport are stolen – it will be easier to replace if the relevant details are to hand. Do not tell the whole world you’re away on Facebook or any other form of social media. Tempting though it is to advise friends you’re about to travel – unfortunately once it’s online – anybody and everybody has access. Insurance companies may not pay out any compensation if you have advertised that your home will be empty. Wait until you’re back before posting photographs and videos…

Aside this - holidays are a great time and certainly punctuate the daily grind for you and your family and should be enjoyed and relished… Happy Holidays.n THE DETAILS

T

his May half term at Museum of London Docklands, be inspired by the engineering story behind their free interactive exhibition Tunnel: e Archaeology of Crossrail. Learn about Europe’s largest infrastructure project and London’s newest railway and explore how the new Elizabeth line was built. Tunnels were dug deep beneath some of London’s busiest streets so as not to disturb important foundations, and when they reached the surface, an opportunity arose to uncover layers of the city’s history. 500 of the most exciting objects discovered during this massive engineering project are now on display at Museum of London Docklands at their free exhibition Tunnel: e Archaeology of Crossrail. ere will be free family events at the museum throughout the May half term inspired by this great feat of engineering. Whether you want to build bridges like Brunel, create a train, like the Elizabeth line trains, or discover the modern marvel of Tower Bridge, there is something to spark everyone’s imagination. 2 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

Richard Young Gallery Photographic shoot with celebrity photographer Richard Young

Richard Young has developed a new photographic concept based out of his gallery in Kensington – Richard Young Walk-Ins.

L

aunching in September 2015, Richard Young Gallery features a studio where the public and invited celebrities are invited to walk in and have their portrait taken by the legendary celebrity photographer. Get the chance to feel like a celebrity yourself, as Richard shoots an entire roll of black and white film in 10 minutes! Clients receive three silver gelatin prints and the contact sheet of the images which are hand selected by Richard from each shoot. Gift Vouchers are also available. The perfect gift for the person who has everything. Prices start at £1800.00 per shoot. Richard comments “In 1979 I was commissioned by French Vogue and David Bailey’s Ritz Magazine to shoot Sir Ralph Richardson being photographed by Sir Cecil Beaton. I watched as his assistants set up the shoot. Finally the great man himself came out and took about 10 shots, and that was it. I was intrigued. I plucked up the courage. ‘Sir, I see you have only taken a few shots?’. He turned to me and retorted, ‘My dear boy, if you can’t get it in one roll of film it’s just not worth bothering!’ Richard Young is at the forefront of celebrity photography. With a career spanning 40 years, Richard’s exceptional eye and unique approach has cemented him as the most trusted and prolific contemporary photographer to the stars. As both a portraitist and photojournalist, his unerring ability to capture the moment and present a candid,

inside view into the world of celebrity has resulted in iconic images that are celebrated in publications throughout the world. Richard has photographed a diverse and distinguished range of famous celebrities, capturing some genuinely unique moments over the course of his career. He took the last photograph of Keith Moon at a party with Paul and Linda McCartney, just hours before he died. Richard visited orphanages in Romania with Michael Jackson, photographed Sting’s wedding to Trudie Styler and toured the country with the Sex Pistols. He has covered parties for the Cannes film festival and the Oscars in Los Angeles. He accompanied and documented United States troops in Iraq and Fidel Castro in Cuba. These examples are only a few of Richard’s diverse achievements, and are a mark of the trust and liking that he inspires in his subjects. With an archive of over 2 million images, Richard Young’s prolific body of work could easily serve as documentation of popular culture over the past 40 years. ATLANTIS TRAVEL YOUR HIGH STREET TRAVEL AGENT

Carols Educational Trip to Mauritius

O

ur Senior Travel Consultant, Carol, has been in the travel industry for many years and travelled extensively for both business and pleasure.Lets hear from Carol about her work trip to Mauritius to gain first hand knowledge about the destination and hotels to enable her to sell the best suited property to our clients. Q: Carol I understand you went on a work trip to Mauritius? A: Yes it was arranged by one of our suppliers, we went for 7 nights. Q: Sounds like an amazing holiday? A: Oh no, its actually quite hard work. We move from hotel to hotel so living out of a suitcase which enables us to experience several hotels in a short space of time. Q: How many hotels did you stay in? A: Four hotels Le Meridien for 1 night Westin Turtle Bay for 2 nights Shangri La Le Tousserok for 1 night and St Regis for 1 night. e flight was direct and overnight with British Airway. Q: How much difference is there in the hotels? A: Huge difference Le Meridien is great for families that are looking for a fun filled holiday. Westin Turtle Bay is lovely for couples or families wanting a luxury property with fabulous staff. Le Tousserok is a beautiful hotel with amazing facilities including lots of sports and St Regis is a total luxury colonial style experience. Q: Which hotel was your personal favourite? A: Shangri La Le Tousserok – it has recently been refurbished and everything about it was fabulous. Q: Apart from visiting the hotels what else did you do? A: I had the most amazing experience at Casela World of Adventures – after a safari tour we fed giraffes in a specially built tower and then the absolute highlight we met and petted lion cubs and fully grown lions – the owner of the park instilled me with so much confidence I didn’t feel nervous just extremely excited – this was the first travel agent group that had been allowed this experience and I was thrilled to be part of it. We spent so much time with the lions we had to leave before seeing the Pygmy Hippos or the Aras which was a bit disappointing. Q: Did you see other hotels as well? A: Yes, Tamarina Hotel, Constance Belle Mare Plage and Constance Prince 3 4 M AY 2 0 1 7

Maurice – Tamarina and Belle Mare Plage have golf courses and Prince Maurice has over-water suites and a floating restaurant and floating bar. Q: Were you jet-lagged when you got home? A: No, there is no time difference on the Mauritius flight. I went straight to work from the airport. Q: Was the trip advantageous? A: Yes I have been to Mauritius several times before but I have not seen these hotels and I have never even imagined that I would spend time petting fully grown lions along with their cubs – I am normally scared of squirrels in my garden !!!! e Island is beautiful and large enough to have plenty going on and the standard of accommodation is fabulous. e people are gentle and kind and bend over backwards to help everyone and they totally love children. Q: Would you return? A: Definitely and I would return to Casela and do the “Walking with lions” tour which was shown on TV – I feel confidant recommending Mauritius to my clients and depending on their needs recommending the correct hotel. n POP IN AND SEE OUR FRIENDLY STAFF

The four-time Major Champion, who won th he prestigious title in 2014, will take on the new--look West Course West Course, which has been undergoing exttensiivve changes since last year’s Championship. All 18 greens were stripped of the old turff and re seeded with a new creeping bent, re-seeded bent improving vin v ng both the appearance and playability of the putting surfaces, while four greens – on the 8th, 11th, 14th and 16th holes – were completely rebuilt and fiivve greens – on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 12th and 15th holes – were partially rebuilt. A sub-air system was also installed on all greens to help make them firmer and faster, and new irrigation and drainage was also introduced. Furthermore, all bunkers were redesigned and reconstructed, with 29 bunkers completely removed from play, y, helping to more closely realign the course with Harry Colt’s original vision, whilst also being cognisant of the demands of the modern game. McIlroy said he is looking forward to being part of a world class field for the launch event of the

Hopefully the weather is good and people come out in their dro ovves like they always do.” 2016 Masters Champion Danny Willett and Ryder Cup legend Lee Westw Ry Westwood are also part of the impressiivve field. Willett says “It’s a fantastic event and obviously for me being English, it really is our biggest event we play on home soil.” Willett

Fellow footballers Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel, Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Fowler, plus cricket legends Kevin Pietersen, Brian Lara, Allan Lamb, Graeme Swann and Sir Ian Botham are among the latest names to be announced.

Legendary rock band Status Quo will be Rockin’ All Over the Show Stage for the first time on Saturday 27th May. DO YOU SUFFER FROM BAD BREATH?

B

ad breath (which is closely linked with gum disease) can be a social problem, unpleasant for others and embarrassing for the person that has it.

MAIN CAUSES OF BAD BREATH

Poor oral hygiene. Plaque in the mouth contains bacteria, which produce waste products (VSCs) that cause bad breath. erefore, if the daily brushing and cleaning of teeth is not ideal, then more plaque bacteria will exist. Tongue coating. Bacteria on the tongue account for 80-90% of bad breath. Yet most people do NOT scrape and clean the tongue on a daily basis. Smoking and alcohol. Tar, nicotine and alcohol cause dry mouth and reduced salivary flow, which results in bad mouth odour. Pungent smelling food. Strong smelling foods such as onion, garlic and fish may cause bad breath, even hours after brushing the teeth.

“To expect to be kissed having bad breath is the secret of a fool.”

TOP TIPS FOR FRESH BREATH

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day • Clean between the teeth every day with floss or small brushes – this will remove the plaque and bacteria that build up. • Gently cleanse the tongue with a tongue cleanser, such as OOLITT. • Avoid over-indulging in spicy foods, garlic and onion. • Reduce the consumption of coffee, tea and alcohol, all of which have a drying effect on the mouth. • Gargle with Ultradex mouthwash. is is an alcohol free mouthwash and suitable for vegetarians. It contains chlorine dioxide, which is scientifically proven to remove VSCs. n

SKIN DEEP ISSUES WITH FRANCES FURLONG

PART 3 - ACNE

T

his month is the final article of the skin deep issue series, since writing the pieces on scars and rosacea there has been an overwhelming response with clients contacting me with regards to helping these stressful skin conditions. ere is no doubt that the condition acne is equally as emotionally hard for the sufferer. It’s a myth that only teenagers get spots. While 90 per cent of teens experience acne (the medical term for spots), half continue to be affected as adults. e symptoms of acne in adults are similar to those in teenagers, and include blackheads and whiteheads, inflamed spots, pustules and cysts. What Causes Acne? To understand acne, you need to know how your skin works. e pores in your skin contain oil glands. When you hit puberty, there's an increase in sex hormones called androgens. e excess hormones cause your oil glands to become overactive, enlarge, and produce too much oil, or sebum. When there's too much sebum, the pores or hair follicles become blocked with skin cells. e increase in oil also results in an overgrowth of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. -Hormonal changes related to birth control pills, menstrual periods, and pregnancy can trigger acne - Other external acne triggers include heavy face creams and cosmetics, hair dyes, and greasy hair products - all of which can increase blockage of pores! -Your genetics - if your parents or grandparents struggled with acne, you might do too. -Smoking - especially for older people. -Being stressed. -Using the wrong skincare products for your skin type. Types of Acne Lesions If blocked pores become infected or inflamed, a pimple - a raised red spot with a white centre - forms. If the pore clogs, closes, and then bulges, you have a whitehead. A blackhead occurs when the pore clogs, stays open, and the top has a blackish appearance due to oxidation or exposure to air. When bacteria grow in the blocked pore, a pustule may appear, meaning the pimple becomes red and inflamed. Cysts form when the blockage and inflammation deep inside pores produce large, painful lumps beneath the skin's surface. Additional Acne Triggers Clothing that rubs your skin may also worsen acne, especially on the back and chest. So can heavy sweating during exercise, and hot, humid climates. Stress is known to trigger increased oil production, which is why many teens have a new crop of pimples during exam times and adults going through emotional times in their lives. What is the Treatment for Acne? e treatment usually depends on how serious the problem is. For instance, if you have an occasional inflamed pimple,

6 0 M AY 2 0 1 7

After

you may use daily skincare products. I can't stress enough the importance of hygiene, using warm water twice a day with an antibacterial wash suitable for acne prone skin and superficial scarring like glycolic acid or glycolic/salicylic wash it helps to renew and refine the skin and deeply cleans the pores and soaks up excessive sebum on the skin surface. Glycolic acid Retinoids (medications that come from vitamin A) Salicylic acid Various fruit acids Benzoyl peroxide reduces oil production and has antibacterial properties. But use it carefully, as it might leave your skin dry and flaky. Try to use it just before bedtime. Antibiotics Skin peeling in clinic Plexr What can you do yourself to help? ere are also measures you can take yourself to help ease spots: Clean up your diet - Research has found that high-dairy, high-glycaemic index diets may be linked to acne. Try basing your diet on complex carbs like whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and reduce your dairy intake - try alternatives such as calcium-enriched soya milk. Take skin-supporting supplements - studies have shown that people with acne might have low levels of zinc. Increase levels in your diet by eating more zinc-rich foods, such as seafood, meat and quinoa, or take a supplement. Cut stress - Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, or simply taking time out to read or go for a walk can be effective. n

“I Couldn’t Be Happier” WORDS BY JENNIFER SPENCER

D

eciding where to have comprehensive dental treatment is for many people a challenging and intimidating decision to make. Just like our patient Teresa. For a long time, Teresa had wanted a nicer smile, but had always put everyone else’s needs before her own. Difficult episodes in Teresa’s past and childhood, sadly including domestic violence, has made Teresa the caring wonderful person she is today. Teresa hated smiling in photos and felt she needed to hide her teeth; she was generally not in a happy place. At our first consultation with Teresa, we began to understand what improving her smile would mean to her. “ I was greeted with care and confidence, I left feeling content.” Teresa said she had certain expectations that we had to meet for us to carry out the treatment for her. Spending her savings on dental care was a huge decision. “Ash actually listened and spoke ‘to’ me, not at me. I felt important.” So after detailed discussions and planning we gave her an amazing new smile, firstly with some general health treatment, ten porcelain veneers, and a new accurately fitting denture to replace her missing lower teeth. Over the last few months, we have grown fond of our weekly chats and laughter that we have had at each of Teresa’s visits. “I have enjoyed our chats and will miss coming here, the whole experience has been great. I am so glad I finally decided to do this, it was a big decision for me, I have no regrets, I couldn’t be happier.” We work hard as a team to ensure every patient has an enjoyable experience. After years of not smiling in photographs, being ashamed of her teeth, and bad experiences, Teresa finally left us with a huge smile and said to me: “ is was truly worth it, thank you so much.”

Watching Teresa’s confidence grow has been fantastic. If you feel you would like some caring and professional advice on improving your smile, then please contact us now on 0208 1082469 for a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION, and we will be happy to help you too. n

Award winner Frances Furlong Rgn Bsc hons Inp. offers a wide range of treatments for Men and Women

“

Plexr is a cordless hand operated micro-surgical device that transfers concentrated heat to the treated skin tissue. It uses the difference in voltage between the device and the patients skin, generating a small electrical arc, similar to lightening. Plexr ionises the existing gases in the gap atmosphere (that would be the space between the needle tip and the patient’s skin) producing plasma. The small lightening sublimates the fluids contained in the superficial part of the skin, without unwanted heat transmission to the adjacent tissues. Additionally it acts on the superficial layer of the skin preserving the lower layers, which reduces drastically any potential permanent skin damage that could be caused by the misuse of conventional lasers.

”

‘My under eye bags were making me look so tired, being a man make up tricks are not an option. I was quite scared to have surgery and wanted to try something less invasive, Frances suggested the new Plexr treatment , this is me 8 weeks after a single treatment and I am delighted, friends and family are commenting on how fresh and well I'm looking,I will certainly be having another session as Frances said after 2 the results will be even better’ R.E - Hertfordshire

BEFORE

AFTER

‘Over the years I have sadly had to say goodbye to eye make up, with heavy skin and deep wrinkles to my upper eyelid there wasn't much point. Frances suggested I try Plexr to help smooth out the eyelid skin and give me a fresher more youthful eye area. She explained I may need 2-3 treatments. This is me after a single session 12 weeks after. As you can imagine I'm over the moon.’ J.S. - Essex

Twills and velvets have been sourced from Saville Row’s finest suppliers, upholstery services are by heritage British furniture manufacturer Artistic Upholstery and casegoods have been created by world-renowned Italian furniture brand, Porada. The Harrods of London collection draws inspiration from Art-Deco jewellery and tailoring. Each piece combines an elegant and timeless silhouette with

unexpected embellishments and detailing, giving the collection an understated yet intriguing aesthetic. Annalise Fard, Director of Home at Harrods: “We are thrilled to be launching Harrods of London’s first furniture collection this spring. Designing a furniture collection in-house was the next step after the relaunch of Harrods Home four years ago. Since then, we have introduced new brands in a range of styles across the furniture department, curated collections of lighting and accessories, and moulded Harrods into a design destination like no other. The elegant designs created by the Harrods Interiors team bring together contemporary understated finishes and the finest materials. A nod to Harrods heritage and the 1930s, brings an air of sophistication to the collection; I love how the clasps of each of the occasional pieces encase the marble table-tops, so evocative of the solitaire setting of a ring.” The collection is the latest addition to Harrods of London, the store’s own label, which includes womenswear, menswear, layette and luxury linens. Butter-soft leathers and fine wool and cashmere feature in each category, and the furniture collection is in keeping with this sophisticated aesthetic. HOUSE &LIVING GARDEN OUTDOOR GUIDE

The lowdown on

lawnmowers BY HANNAH STEPHENSON

There are so many lawnmowers on the market these days rotary and cylinder, corded electric, cordless petrol, batterypowered and state-of-the-art robotic types. But which one is right for your budget, and right for your lawn?

L

awnmower prices range from under £100 to thousands for elaborate sit-on types, but expect to pay at least a few hundred if you have a fair sized lawn and want something that will last. In our environmentally-conscious world, battery-powered options - once dismissed by lawn lovers because of the batteries' dubious staying power and need to replace them after a winter in storage - have become more sophisticated as Lithium-Ion batteries don't lose power like the old ones. Bosch stopped manufacturing petrol mowers in 2010 to go eco-friendly and has long been extolling the virtues of Lithium-ion batteries which, it claims, perform as petrol equivalents but with low noise, low vibrations and savings on running costs.

So which lawnmower will cut it with you? BATTERY POWER Battery-operated mowers are generally lighter machines, don't pump out carbon monoxide and are much quieter than their petrol counterparts. You don't have to worry about a cable or expend energy pulling a cord to start them either, as they start at the touch of a button. The disadvantages of battery mowers are that you have to remember to recharge the batteries and they won't stripe your lawn as effectively as a heavier machine. PETROL POWER Petrol-driven motors may be better for bigger lawns and where you need plenty of power on slopes or uneven surfaces. There are push and self-propelled varieties, having throttle control which eases the pushing ability of the user. Petrol mowers give a good striped effect as they are heavier and,

although they need servicing, it could be argued that a well-maintained, good quality petrol mower will outlast most electric ones. Users also won't encounter the cumbersome cables of electric models and the need for safety cut-out plugs. ELECTRIC POWER A corded electric mower is fine for a smaller suburban garden, if you're not bothered about keeping the cable out of the way of the blades. Electric 'hover' mowers are the cheapest, but can produce a disappointing finish, often require a spanner to adjust the mowing height and don't always collect grass efficiently. Ultimately, your choice should depend on your lawn type and size. If you have a small or medium-sized lawn, a battery-operated mower or light electric type should be fine for your needs. CYLINDER OR ROTARY? Cylinder mowers are for the lawn perfectionist who wants a finer cut and bowling green finish. They are ideal for flat lawns and short grass, but struggle with long or wet grass. If you want the exercise, opt for a push variety. If you don't, self-propelled is the way to go. Rotary mowers are better all-rounders, cut better in wet or long grass and cope well with uneven, bumpy surfaces. Their blades can be easily changed to boot. OR THE LAZY WAY… Imagine never having to mow your lawn again! With Automated Robot Lawn Mowers all the hard work is done for you allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your garden, rather than working in it. The principle behind the robotic mower is simple. It cuts the grass little and often in an irregular pattern. Because the grass clippings are so small they quickly dissolve back into the lawn, adding nutrients back into the soil, for a thicker, greener, healthier looking lawn. If it finds any objects in its way, it will stop, turn and cut the lawn in another direction. Prices can range from about £500 up to about £4,000. But real gardeners may relish the exercise that goes with a mower they can push, and the pleasure of seeing the well-groomed green carpet they've created at the end of their workout.
