sneak peek behind the scenes as the local group of independent schools prepares for the annual influx of visitors¬ Choosing the right school for their child is top of the list for most families and therefore doing your research is vital. School Open Days are normally an important part of the decision-making process, allowing families to take a tour of the school, meet pupils and staﬀ and to hear from the head. All of this provides an important insight into the school’s ethos and culture. e Oak-Tree Schools have seen more and more families choose their brand of excellent independent education over recent years. With Open Day season here again, Braeside, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands have been preparing to welcome the many prospective families looking for the best education for their children. At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Headmistress Claire Osborn will be greeting the prospective parents, “I am very much looking forward to our Open Day with Braeside. I’m always very pleased to be able to discuss Braeside’s reputation as a local school with strong academic achievement. e developments that have been made since Braeside became part of the Oak-Tree Group have been very positive. We now share curricular and extra-curricular activities with Normanhurst, which benefits both sets of pupils when they work together collaboratively”. Braeside’s Open Day is on Wednesday 3 October from 9.15am at the Juniors and 6pm at the Seniors. “Parents value the opportunity to take a guided tour with our confident pupils as they give an honest view of what school is really like”, comments Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress of Epping’s Coopersale Hall School. “In my talk I give a flavour of the quality of our education

from the earliest ages of 2½ up to our intensive preparation for senior schools at 11. e recent successful inspection report gives me many positive comments that I can highlight. Parents are usually interested to hear about the wrap around care that we oﬀer, including breakfast and after school clubs from 7.30am to 6pm”. Coopersale Hall’s Open Morning is on Tuesday 2 October from 9.15am. At Normanhurst School in North Chingford, Headmistress Claire Osborn enjoys talking to families about the how the school caters for all ages from 2½ to 16. She comments, “the parents and children who visit our Open events are always impressed with the quality of our education. My talk focuses on the many opportunities available to all ages including the strong academic teaching, extra-curricular clubs and GCSE results. e Head Boy and Head Girl also speak about their experiences at Normanhurst and how much they enjoy their learning”. Normanhurst’s Open Evening is on ursday 4 October from 6pm, with a separate Open Morning for Early Years families on Friday 5 October from 9.15am. Sue Belej, Headmistress of Oaklands School in Loughton, is used to talking to groups of parents bringing newborn babies to the Open Mornings as registration often happens at the earliest possible age. She explains, “on Open Morning we deliberately don’t change our normal working day as it is important for parents to get an impression of the school as it really is and not as a series of showcase events that some schools prepare. e pupils enjoy acting as guides and I’m looking forward to talking about our very successful recent inspection report and excellent 11+ results”. e Oaklands Open Morning is on ursday 4 October from 9.15am. n

he start of the school year is also a time of

new beginnings, including for many people the start of a new business venture. Having recently started a new role with Scrutton Bland, I know all about the mixture of excitement, anticipation and anxiety that comes with the start of a new undertaking. Over the years I have helped lots of people with advice about starting up a business on their own, and I fully appreciate that it is a time when there is an awful lot to think about. Getting things organised at the start can save a lot of time and hassle (and professional fees!) further down the line. Once you have decided to run your own business, there are a few things you must think about: • e structure of your business – whether you should be a limited company, a sole trader or a partnership and the tax consequences of each structure • Registering with HMRC for business taxes, VAT, self-assessment and what your requirements are to avoid late filing penalties • How you are going to finance the business in the early days (by way of loans or equity) and the most appropriate funding for capital equipment requirements • Putting together a business plan to help with applying for funding but also forecasts to monitor performance against • Whether there is grant funding available to provide you with funds for equipment, employees and other expenses while you are growing your income 1 2 SEPTEMBER 2018

• How to pay yourself in the most tax efficient way for both you and your business • Getting advice on whether you would qualify for tax reliefs such as Research and Development Tax Credits • Considering which cloud accounting solution to use to help record daily transactions as easily as possible, which leaves you free to run your business. ere are an array of products on the market, such as Scrutton Bland’s own sblive system, and choosing the right one will help to provide you with up to date and accurate information to make decisions quickly when needed • Whether you need to take on employees and how to incentivise them tax efficiently with a salary and benefits package. is list isn’t exhaustive, and there are usually lots of other things that crop up in those initial discussions with new business owners. ecent winners of the prestigious Investor in Customers (IIC) Gold Award, Loughton based accountants Myers & Co has seen many changes in the industry since it was established in 2005 by Clive Myers. BUSINESS ACCOUNTS GET HIGH TECH 2019 sees the introduction of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for businesses with a turnover more than the VAT registration threshold. is means businesses will have to file more information with HMRC on a quarterly basis rather than just one annual return. In time this will be rolled out to all businesses. To comply businesses must try and ensure they make use of technology to make this as easy and pain free as possible. ere are many new software packages around to help and these are generally hosted on-line and accessed by mobile apps and smart phones. ey can be set up to upload Bank Statements of a business; will learn what certain transaction relate to and then automatically post them into the accounting software. ey can also photograph and record receipts and post them into the system. A business owner who is out and about and incurs a small business expense, can photograph the receipt on their smart phone and post it direct into their accounting software. It’s never been easier!

Clive qualified as an Accountant in 1992 and has seen many changes in the profession. He worked for various firms in London and for ten years was the Financial Controller of at IT firm with a turnover of circa £100m. He started Myers & Co. wanting to be his own boss and have control of his own destiny. Clive’s advice to anyone starting their own business is to speak to an Accountant as soon as possible. It is so important to get the right advice from the outset and start as you mean to go on. You may need advice on whether to trade as a sole trader or a Limited company or whether you should voluntarily register for VAT at the outset. How to remunerate yourself is another common question. Elliott is the first woman in Broadway history to win two Tony Awards for Best Director and her recent Broadway transfer of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America received the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Rosalie Craig recently completed a run of Jez Butterworth’s award-winning play, The Ferryman at the Gielgud Theatre. Other theatre credits include: Marianne Elliott’s production of The Light Princess, for which she won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress in a Musical and was nominated for an Olivier Award. Patti LuPone, who performed Don’t Cry for me Argentina at the Grammy’s this year returns to London to make her first appearance in a West End musical for over 25 years with this production of Company.

I was lucky enough to stay at the 5 star ultra luxurious Acqualina resort recently with my husband and kids. the hotel is located in sunny Isles in between south Beach & fort lauderdale and 5 minutes from the famous Aventura shopping mall. the Acqualina resort consists of the Mansions at Acqualina, the Acqualina resort & spa as well as the soon to be built the estates at Acqualina. the entire entrance looked so glamorous, on arrival we saw a fleet of rolls royce (owned by the residents) we were speechless. we entered the main doors to a sumptuous marble floored lobby where we were immediately welcomed with a friendly smile along a warm “welcome to Acqualina”. Before we could even sign the check-in papers, we were asked if we would like to have two Bellinis as a welcome drink. since we both found it to be impolite to decline, we of course took the two glasses Peach-flavoured champagne cocktails. one of the most impressive details about this property is its size. there are only 98 rooms and suites making up the hotel, with the remaining 188 suites as residences. the resort is still classed as a “boutique” hotel with less than 100 rooms. we were given a beautiful 2 bedroom ocean front suite for our stay.

upon opening the door, we were welcomed by an elegant and chic living room opening onto a balcony with full view of the Atlantic. the absolute highlight of course was the super spacious bathroom with double basins, a walk-in shower, huge Jacuzzi bath tub, television, esPA toiletries, a bath duck as well as super elegant bath salts. there is lovely beachside restaurant, “costa grill” with the most idyllic views. the kids were given coconut water inside a real coconut with the hotel logo on it. service at costa grill as well as on the beach itself was always on par. the hotel has 4 swimming pools, including an adults only pool, and a fabulous white sand beach. the famous Il Mulino restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hotel and known to be one of the best Italian restaurants in the entire united states. the food was simply outstanding and you really have to put in the effort to dine at the same level in Italy. service was really old school and therefore more than perfect, it felt a little bit like at the world famous harry Bar in Venice where all waiters come in formal white uniforms too. this resort was voted number one Beachside property in north America and that’s for a reason: honest, 10/10 go to this leading hotel of the world at florida’s most wonderful spot. thanks to all the staff members who made our stay so special. Atlantis have special rates at this hotel and can be combined with flights, cruises, or just accommodation, so call for surprisingly why not pop in and see us affordable prices.

hen considering the benefits of a home swimming pool, the advantages to physical health and fitness are often first to spring to mind. While indeed contributing to a healthy lifestyle, the positive effects a home swimming has on daily life goes far beyond the physical. In this time, the firm has spoken to hundreds of satisfied customers and compiled a catalogue of case studies to help understand how the addition of a home swimming pool benefits family life. These studies revealed that, while rarely considered, the emotional advantages of swimming at home are just as significant as the physical, fitness-related benefits.

Increasing the quality of family time Losing touch with family members is a problem experienced nationwide, as it becomes more and more difficult to organise get-togethers with relatives. The ability to bring families back together and instigate the spending of more quality time as a group is just one of the hidden benefits of home

swimming pools. This is certainly the experience of Buckinghamshire-based couple Peter and Christine. While restoring their 14th century manor farmhouse, the couple’s love of swimming prompted them to build an indoor swimming pool in their garden. Their decision was made in the hope of bringing all the family to the house and becoming a space for the group to enjoy. After research into various swimming pool contractors, they chose Origin to design, build and manage the project. Once completed, the pool succeeded in becoming a focal point for family meet ups and gatherings. “We have three grandchildren, three daughters and their partners. They come over every weekend, sometimes all at once, and whenever they are here they all pile into the pool.” Family time is now a regular part of the couple’s life, and they enjoy spending time in the pool with their friends and relatives every week.

Encouraging positive mental wellbeing and relaxation A home pool can also encourage positive wellbeing. The addition of a pool creates a place for relaxation, and somewhere homeowners can spend time unwinding. This was experienced first-hand by Michelle and Paul Green when they extended their new house to include a bespoke Origin swimming pool. Discussing his wife’s use of the pool, Paul comments: “She uses it for leisure. It’s a very pleasant space to relax and enjoy activities such as having a drink and reading a book.” The couple now see the pool as more than just a fitness facility. They treat the pool as an extension

Improving the work/life balance As the popularity of flexible working rises, many professionals still struggle to balance their personal lives with their jobs. Work can easily take control, leaving little time for leisure. Bringing a swimming pool into the home can help family and personal life regain some importance. A couple who personally experienced this rebalance were Ian and Michelle Scott. Prior to building their bespoke Origin swimming pool and pool house, Michelle really struggled to balance her time, as work dominated her life. Ian explained: “She would often get home late after a full day’s work and not have the time or energy to head off to the gym.” However, now she manages to balance her life much more efficiently. “We noticed that when we were on holiday we would both get up early and start our day with a morning swim which was great! We’ve now brought this luxury into our home and it has enabled both of us to improve our fitness every day before work.”

decided on building her own swimming pool after enjoying the luxury of her father’s pool in the south of France. She had always loved swimming, yet her busy working life meant free time was at an absolute minimum. “The only exercise I really enjoy is swimming and I often don’t have time to go to a gym because I work 12-hour days.” The project took six months and now completed allows Sarah to make the most of her free time. What was once a jam-packed routine without room for exercise, now includes daily swimming and relaxing in the pool. “It’s definitely changed my routine for the better, I’m swimming every day before I head off to work which makes me feel enriched and energised.” www.originpools.co.uk

LET THE LIGHT IN Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger.

If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven

Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. s we enter the fourth quarter of 2018, it’s interesting to read the many conflicting market reports that are circulating in the trade press and wider public media as to where the current housing market presently sits. One of the national estate agency brands has issued a report this month that indicates a rise in prices across the UK of 7.3% since June 2016, a certain indicator of sustainable growth. Perhaps more relevant to us is, that without a doubt the Central London market is in the doldrums. Westminster, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea have all seen sustained year on year falls over that period and those seem to be making headlines that are tainting the rest of London and South East Figures. Housing stock remains low in comparison to the number of active buyers, and popular suburban London and Essex boroughs are reporting surprisingly healthy sales figures, the attraction of great schools, Central Line transport and competitive house prices when compared to North and East London is hard to resist. ere is no doubt that viewing levels have tailed off a little over the school summer holiday period, but certainly remain in line with expectations. Teens Unite supports 13-24 year old’s following a cancer diagnosis and as part of its expansion into Essex, the charity will be bringing its infamous ‘It’s a Knockout’ event to Loughton Cricket Club on 16th September. You may have even spotted Gerard’s Property Services boards advertising the event in the local area. Based on the hit TV show, teams will compete against each other on an inflatable assault course, overcoming obstacles along the way to be crowned the winners. Entry to spectate is free of charge and there will be fun for all the family; with a BBQ, selection of stalls and children’s attractions to enjoy.
