DEMENTIA AWARENESS SESSION SUCCESS

he council are hosting Dementia Friends Awareness Sessions for local groups, in partnership with Epping Forest District Museum in their new community area called

'the space'. e sessions are being led by the Community and Wellbeing Team in conjunction with Epping Forest District Dementia Action Alliance. e alliance is part of an initiative to make the district of Epping Forest a 'Dementia Friendly Community'. SUCCESSFUL SESSIONS e first Dementia Friends awareness sessions have already been held for the council's apprentices, housing team, the Limes Farm Community Group and for many of those involved with the council's walking for health scheme, Lifewalks. Lifewalks leader, Erika Needham said: “e session helped me see how challenging it can be for those living with dementia and how we can help to alleviate this. Bringing dementia to the attention of the public can help us all to make small changes in our behaviour towards those living with dementia, which in turn will make life easier for them and their carers”. look behind the scenes as the local group of independent schools prepares for an influx of visitors.

e Oak-Tree Schools have seen more and more families choose their brand of excellent independent education over recent years. Braeside, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands have been preparing to open their doors during this Open Day season to welcome the many hopeful prospective families looking for the best education for their children. At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Claire Osborn took over as Headmistress from September and will be greeting families; “I am very much looking forward to my first Open Day with Braeside. As Headmistress of two Oak-Tree Schools I’m delighted to be able to talk about Braeside’s reputation for strong academic achievement and the many developments we’ve seen since Braeside became part of the Oak-Tree Group last year. is is an exciting year and we’ve introduced a range of shared curricular and extra-curricular activities with Normanhurst that will benefit pupils at both schools.” Braeside’s Open Morning is on Wednesday 5 October from 9.15am at the Juniors and the Open Evening is on Wednesday 5 October from 6pm at the Seniors. MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP RECEIVES GRANT Museum partnership secures major grant award from Arts Council England Resilience Fund

A

heritage sustainability project entitled ‘No Borders’, which is being led by Epping Forest District Council’s Museum, Heritage and Culture Service has been awarded £279,000 by Arts Council England, following a competitive bid to Arts Council England’s Museums Resilience Fund. NATIONAL AWARD e award, which is part of Arts Council England’s strategic funding programme, has been designed to support museums to become more sustainable and resilient to the pressures many are currently facing. Nationally some 94 museums and organisations were awarded funding totalling £12.2 million. GROUND-BREAKING PARTNERSHIP e 'No Borders' project is a ground breaking local authority museums partnership, which includes Epping Forest Museum, Heritage and Culture Service, the Lowewood Museum in Broxbourne and Chelmsford City’s Museum Service, which are all popular museum services with free entry for the public. DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE SERVICES e aim of the project is to support all three local authority areas to develop sustainable, inspiring services for the future, drawing upon recommendations and ideas produced for Epping Forest District Museum, as part of an earlier piece of resilience work funded by Arts Council England. GOOD NEWS FOR RESIDENTS e funding is good news for local residents of all ages as family activities are a key area of work and this project will enable the museums to develop new approaches to support funding for exhibitions, development projects and day to day activities, by bringing in professionals with expertise in fundraising and commercial operations including retail, catering, event services and venue hire, to undertake a number of transformational improvements across all these areas of work. NEW CHARITABLE FOUNDATIONS It is also planned for the museums to establish new,

charitable Development Foundations to undertake fundraising in support of their work the museums, with the aim of bringing in funding not normally available to local authority museums and this will be established and guided by an experienced fundraiser. A third strand of the project will be to undertake projects with groups and individuals who don’t currently access the museums’ services, to build audiences and encourage people of all ages and abilities to get involved with the museum, as visitors, supporters, volunteers and future curators. In the Epping Forest District, the 'No Borders' project will build on the recent expansion and refurbishment of Epping Forest District Museum, which has recently reopened following a major Heritage Lottery Fund Award of £1.65m, which has enabled the museum to be fully accessible. DELIGHTED Museum, Heritage and Culture Manager, Tony O’Connor said: ‘'We are delighted to have secured this funding for this work at this exciting time in the museum services development. We are grateful for the support of Arts Council England in providing the opportunity to undertake this transformational project, which will improve the opportunities for residents and visitors to Epping Forest, Broxbourne and Chelmsford museums to engage in the rich heritage and cultural offer we all share.'' EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS Councillor Helen Kane, Portfolio Holder for Epping Forest District Council’s Leisure and Community Services said: ''Achieving this funding will allow us to build on the exciting developments which have taken place at the Epping Forest District Museum and will ensure that our museum, heritage and culture service can continue to contribute to the health, wellbeing and economic development of the district in a sustainable way.'' Courses run for 14 weeks on Wednesdays at Loughton Methodist Church; on Tuesdays at the Learning Lodge, North Chingford and also an evening class there on Tuesday evenings. Adelaine says “Our classes are aimed at giving everyone a taste of the many elements of creating compelling artwork. We pride ourselves on working with each student on a one-to-one basis with step by step tuition enabling them to enjoy and tease out their own creativity.” Over 14 weeks four different mediums are explored. Teaching drawing is fundamental in the courses using proportion, perspective and scale. e curriculum is thorough and organised, starting with pencil drawing and sketching, oil pastels, plus painting techniques with water colours and acrylics. artists. By the end of the course students will have produced their very own original art which forms part of an exhibition that showcases their new stills to friends and family. usician, actor, icon — David Bowie was for almost 50 years one of the most recognised and revered artists in the world, his influence transcending music to shape the wider culture of our time. His life as an art collector, however, was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view. Now, for the first time, this little-known side of Bowie will be fully revealed. Next month, (November) Sotheby’s will stage Bowie/Collector – a threepart sale that includes a selection of around 400 items from the private collection of David Bowie. At its heart will be Bowie’s collection of Modern and Contemporary British art – a richly stimulating group of over 200 works by many of the most important British artists of the 20th century, including Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Frank Auerbach and Damien Hirst. Bowie’s famously inquisitive mind also led

him to Outsider Art, Surrealism, Contemporary African art and, not least, to the work of the eccentric Italian designer Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group. Bowie’s private collection will be exhibited at Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries, giving fans, art historians and collectors a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in the art and objects that informed his private world. “Eclectic, unscripted, understated: David Bowie’s collection offers a unique insight into the personal world of one of the 20th century’s greatest creative spirits.” Oliver Barker, Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe.

However, the launch for the Festival will be the annual celebration of Epping Forest, e Centenary Walk, which this year will take place on Sunday 11 September. e Centenary walk, established in 1978, the centenary year of the Epping Forest Act of 1878, offers a way to experience Epping Forest from its southernmost tip, in East London to the northern extremities near Epping in Essex. Participants can choose to walk the entire length of the Forest in one day, or take part in one of the local sections. e route is linear. Manor Park Station is a five-minute walk from the start and Epping Underground Station is a ten-minute walk from the finish. e Centenary Walk is organised by the Friends of Epping Forest with support from the Rambler’s Association, Epping Forest Centenary Trust and e City of London Corporation. Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s annual fundraising event, taking place around the UK bringing people together to walk for a world without dementia. is walk was in memory of Bharti’s patients with dementia both past and present. ‘It was lovely to see so many people coming together to fight dementia. I am happy to know that my contribution, as well as that of my friends and family, will make a real difference to improving the lives of people living with dementia and their carer’s. ank you to all who came.’ Walkers began from eydon Bois Village hall, and 15 people completed a 4.5 miles approximately [1hr walk] around eydon Bois, Epping Forest on a sunny morning. LOVING THE SEASIDE WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

A

t this point in September, most of us are back from our summer holiday. Suntans and memories are beginning to fade, the sand has been cleaned out of the sandals, it’s back to work and the kids are at school. But does that mean we can’t still enjoy the smell of the sea air, the shingle and sand between our toes and the gentle ripple of oceanic bubbles tingling our feet and ankles? We have various beaches to excite our post-summer senses such as Southend-on-Sea or Mersea. Just walking along a sea front, listening to the waves and the whole ambience of the seaside is something which exhilarates and brings back a certain tranquility in today’s hyperactive world. Unfortunately we’re all juggling too much, phones, emails, parental and business responsibilities plus the regular daily grind. I read somewhere (and apologies for not remembering where) that the sea is calming because in our subconscious, it reminds us of being in the womb, rather like having a bath is something of a foetal experience too; calming, safe and relaxed. But rather than make this feature too deep and analytical, let’s think about the beach. As a 1960s child, I vividly recall the fun at Peter Pan’s playground in Southend-on-Sea; eating candy floss which resulted in a blue tongue, risking broken teeth for a nut ring and then a big plate of fish ‘n chips. Mushy peas are

essential, together with lots of vinegar and sticky tartare sauce. And not forgetting the Cadbury’s ’99 ice-cream and a little dish of cockles – not at the same time! Also my favourite exercise of looking at the postcards and giggling at the naughty ones. It’s such a shame they’re now considered politically incorrect and passé, although I must admit to discreet fumblings at the postcard rack in my eager pursuit of a cartoon gem. Getting sunburnt was always a by-product of the day’s jaunt and nausea from the colouring infused sugar rush. So aside my reminiscing happy, childhood days and now as an adult, the seaside still beckons (for all of the reasons above) but also for the tranquility afforded in an environment which seems less hassled and more relaxed. Just because it’s not summer anymore, doesn’t mean we can’t have a late night paddle, dinner at an open air restaurant, or simply to sit on a deckchair under a dark night filled with a million stars, listening to the waves, breathing in the air and feeling at one with nature. n

I often see clients really going to town with looking their best prior to their holiday, working out at the gym and body brushing to look the best they can on the beach, but unfortunately a week or two in the sun can undo some of our hard work. We typically tend to be less active, indulge more in food and alcoholic drinks, as well as soaking up the sun to get a glowing tan, so here are some quick fix tips to get you back on track! 1- WEIGHT GAIN IN LOCALISED AREAS AND BLOATING Excessive indulgence in richer foods and alcohol in conjunction with a more sedentary lifestyle almost always equates to weight gain, sluggish digestive system and bloating. Home treatment - A three day detox juice cleanse can really help with bloating and help you lose a few pounds to help you kickstart a return to a healthier way of life. ere are also some great apps for simple and quick workouts at home, ideal for those who aren't fans of the gym, have young children or who don't simply have the time. Burn off those extra calories and kick start your metabolism. Clinic treatment - Mesotherapy is a great way of helping to blast fat cells in localised areas and to help smooth out dimpled skin, typically 3-5 treatments given every week can really help. It also helps speed up the lymphatic system and improves a sluggish system. Colonic irrigation is a good way of cleansing the bowel and helps flatten the stomach, used in conjunction with probiotics to boost your immune system. 2-POST HOLIDAY SPOTS/ACNE e sun, sea and sand although great for the sun-kissed glow we seek can cause over secretion of our oil producing glands in the hot and often humid climates chosen as popular holiday destinations. A combination of oil excess and pore blockage by thick sunscreen, sand and often lack of sleep with late nights can cause post holiday acne. Home Treatment - Gentle face wash with glycolic and salicylic acid and pre soaked face pads at night to deeply clean and smooth the skin. Combine this with non comedogenic moisturisers. Clinic treatment - One or two light skin peels can really help clean the skin and reduce acne and new red scars, also helps to lift any new sun damage, gives the skin a real healthy glow. In some cases a prescription for antibiotics can also be given depending on the severity.

3. DRY LACK LUSTRE HAIR Swimming in the sea or even in chlorinated swimming pools can strip the essential oils from our hair, which give’s it it’s healthy lustrous shine. Home treatment - A deep conditioning treatment to repair the frazzled out hair cortex and restore its natural shine and lustre. Find a hair mask that suits your hair, anything from Aussie hair mask miracle up to brands like Kerastase will all help, use weekly for 6 weeks also specialist masks from Balmain can be good for hair extensions. 4. Treatment superficial BCC' scan be treated with cryotherapy or cutterage. For larger lesions surgery may be the answer. Catching these lesions early will help to reduce the scar size post surgery. n
