ANOTHER BUSY OAK-TREE SUMMER W e take a look at the Summer
Term’s highlights that took place outside the classroom at the Oak-Tree Group of Schools - four local independent schools in the Epping Forest area that take pride in the wealth of opportunities they provide. At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, parents in the Juniors were delighted with the fantastic showcase of ‘Cinderella’ that pupils performed recently. e Year 3, 4, and 5 pupils were confident and funny, and had the audience laughing throughout. Many trips have been taking place too, such as the day trip to Southend and the residential visit to Lambourne End. Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh participants in
the Seniors worked hard over a long weekend learning camp craft, first aid, orienteering and developing team skills. All this added to the Sports Day and Prize Days at the end of term. At Epping’s Coopersale Hall, pupils in Years 3 to 6 put on a fantastic performance of ‘Oliver’. With a challenging script, the pupils performed, acted, danced and sang confidently to packed audiences of families and friends. Younger children took part in the ‘Tiddly Prom’ instrumental concert and trips were organised for many year groups including Year 2 to Paradise Wildlife Park, Year 3 to Ongar Railway and Year 6 to the Gunpowder Mills. is year’s Sports Days took place in the glorious sunshine as parents gathered in the marquee for the Prize Day and Early Years Celebration of the Year. Normanhurst School in North Chingford organised a very impressive annual Summer Music Concert in which a large number of pupils performed a wide variety of individual and group instrumental and vocal pieces to their friends and families. Sports Day took place again at the modern Lee Valley Athletics Centre, whilst visits 6

were organised to locations such as Westminster Abbey, the Tate Modern, the Suntrap Centre, Chessington and Harlow Activity Centre. e grand finale was Speech Day at Chingford Assembly Hall with 500 pupils and families celebrating the pupils’ achievements. As well as providing educational visits, such as to the Olympic Park, Ashlyn’s Farm and Broxbourne Riverside, Loughton’s Oaklands School organised a number of other activities including a day’s Ancient Egypt workshop and a visit by Crucial Crew. e older pupils worked very hard on a hilarious production of ‘Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits’ at Lopping Hall in Loughton. Both the Early Years Celebration of the Year and the Year 1-6 Prize Giving celebrated the children’s achievements in a marquee on the field, and Sports Day had a number of budding Olympic athletes on show. Group Principal Matthew Hagger comments, “e Summer Term has been so busy with opportunities for the children across the Group. Of course our main focus is always on the children’s academic education, but running alongside the classroom-based lessons has been our huge programme of extra-curricular clubs, visits, creative experience days and performances to parents. With the various instrumental proms, recitals, productions and concerts, their learning experiences have been enhanced by performing. Our special events have been extraordinary this year, ranging from weekend fetes to formal Speech Days.”n

PREMIUM BONDS – WORTH INVESTING IN? T
he latest million pound winner of
Premium Bonds has been revealed to be from Suffolk. e lucky winner bought his winning bond last year, and according to National Savings and Investments (NS&I) at that time he added a £40,000 sum to his existing bonds, bringing the total to the maximum £50,000 total investment that any one individual can hold. Premium bonds are an incredibly popular savings vehicle with over 21 million bond holders and around £72 billion invested, but technically speaking they really aren’t a savings vehicle at all. ere is no interest rate, although NS&I provides a guide ‘return’ of 1.4% (effective from 1st December 2017). But this return is in the form of ‘prizes’ varying from £25 to £1 million. In reality it is extremely unlikely that anyone will see this 1.4% return: a few will receive significantly more, while the vast majority of bond holders will receive considerably less. e perceived benefits of Premium Bonds are that they are 100% guaranteed by the government and that any prizes received are free of tax. Of course there’s also the motivation of the possibility of winning big! Whilst not classified as a savings vehicle, Premium Bonds are also not a lottery since the ‘stake’ can be returned on demand. e only loss is to the spending power of your £100 (which is the minimum purchase price) as it fails to keep pace with inflation.

e current tax rules for savings income have removed the tax advantage of Premium Bonds for the majority of the population, as the personal savings allowance (PSA) means that basic rate tax payers will only pay tax on interest from true savings accounts if they receive more than £1,000 pa while 40% tax payers will only pay tax on interest over £500 pa. Non taxpayers will, like everyone else, receive interest gross and will not have to account for any tax. So only 45% tax payers or those with significant deposits now need to seek tax free interest and, for them, Premium Bonds may still be attractive, especially as the prizes aren’t set against the PSA. Although the ‘return’ of 1.4% is low, it still compares well with instant access ‘cash’ ISAs. And, of course, there’s still the fact that you might win big! ere are two £1 million prizes every month and the odds of winning that in any one month are a mere 35,926,766,878 to 1! So if you have some Premium Bonds – and over 100,000 of us have the maximum £50,000 holding – and you want a guaranteed return of more than 0% it may be time to reconsider whether you should switch out to some alternative form of financial investment. RAISES AWARENESS FOR NATIONAL CHARITY,
CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY)
E
very week in the UK, 12 young people aged 35 and under, die from undiagnosed cardiac conditions.
When footballer, Fabrice Muamba, collapsed on the pitch in 2012, the world witnessed how hidden heart conditions can strike even the most fit and healthy young people. ere is no warning yet a simple screening taking no more than 15 minutes, can identify the conditions that can cause sudden cardiac death and potentially save lives. Mark Fage, a local architect based in Loughton, was personally touched by this condition when a friend’s son suddenly died. Feeling that more people should know there is help to avoid such tragedy, he volunteered (as part of an organised fund raiser) to walk across all of London’s bridges. e screenings are FREE. CRY is funded purely by donations (normally from families) and major grants. • When symptoms do present themselves, they include chest pain (exercise related chest pain is a red flag), syncope/passing out, palpitations, breathlessness (disproportionate to the amount of exercise) and dizziness. • HOWEVER, 80% of these deaths will occur with no prior symptoms. • e only way to identify people who are asymptomatic and at risk is through cardiac testing using an ECG.
• Although screening will not identify all young people at risk, in Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%. • Sport itself does not cause young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) but it will significantly increase the risk of YSCD if a person has an underlying condition of which they are unaware. • ere are international recommendations that all young people should be tested prior to participation in organised sport. • CRY now tests around 27,000 young people, aged 14-35, annually. Of these, 1 in 300 young people could be at risk from young sudden cardiac death. ABOUT CRY • e charity CRY will test 100 people in a day with an ECG and medical questionnaire. A specialist doctor attends the screenings. • When a young person is identified with a condition they may have to make lifestyle changes, have corrective surgery, take medication or in some cases they will need to have an ICD (Internal Cardiac Defibrillator). • CRY’s screening programme is overseen by leading sports cardiologist, Professor Sanjay Sharma. ance groups from Essex and Hertfordshire gave a wonderful performance at this year’s eNgage at the Spotlight eatre.
With an audience of over 300 and a cast of 130, eNgage brought several communities together for an evening of spectacular dance. e mix of dance styles included Street Dance, Tap, Musical eatre and Commercial. Performers were of all ages and abilities, from 8 years old to 72 years young! e evening welcomed a new group to perform, Mayhem eatre Arts. ey closed the show with a great number representing all dances through the decades. Big Funksters Tappers performed for the first time ever after only having formed in 2017. CoCoCare, an adult group with disabilities from Colchester, wowed the audience with their use of props and quick costume changes, that also take us on a journey through time with different dance styles and moves including Disco and Break Dancing. Jason eatre School celebrated girl power with a feisty but feel-good female medley, the piece was created in the Daniela’s Dance classes; a special class started in memory of pupil Daniela Ruggiero.

Straight Up Dance, closed the first act with a phenomenal piece inspired by e Greatest Showman, that had both adults and junior classes performing together. DNA Studios and Flux Dance Collective choreographed pieces especially for the show to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I. e show is organised by the Epping Forest District Museums Heritage and Culture team and is part of the U.Dance network of events that aim to provide every child and young person with the opportunity to take part in a dance performance. e flyer and programme for the show are designed by Art and Design student, Annabel Christian from Epping Forest College who beat fellow classmates to be the winning design. Epping Forest District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Richard Bassett attended, and said: “ What an amazing evening, I consider it a privilege to have been invited. It’s wonderful to be a part of an event that showcases so much local artistic flair and talent. I was exhausted by the sheer energy of all the groups! Congratulations to the performers and well done to all of the event organisers for putting on such a wonderful show. TO PARK OR NOT TO PARK? THAT IS… THE WESTFIELD QUESTION!
F
or most of us who have a car, there’s a certain joy and freedom when you’re behind the wheel. Driving along at a steady pace and preferably without too much traffic thwarting your speed. What does a car say about you? Added attractiveness, statement about personality, a perceived place within the social hierarchy; a hint at certain wealth and success... Well this used to be the case and is still prevalent amongst the multi-billion-pound advertising campaigns. e realities are today’s experience includes speed cameras, crowded roads and the absolute bane of my life, little parking spaces. e King of Diddy Space Car Parks has to be Westfield Stratford. I only have a small, two-seater, but strategically parking in a straight line and within those white-lined boundaries takes more dedication and focus then perfecting handmade sugarcraft flowers. It can take thirty minutes to park the car! Green lights indicating a space is in fact more fiction than indication; the green light generally doesn’t work and then of course, that’s assuming, there’s enough space to fit between vehicles more appropriate to a wild animal safari than a shlep to a shopping mall. But this is not the car owners’ fault – it’s the dimensions of the spot as ascertained by those responsible. However the British Parking Space website does outline regulatory dimensions. (www.britishparking.co.uk). If you have selected a more remote area of the car park where there’s plenty of spaces,

Getting out of the car has merited a well-worn theory of practising and knowing where to bend; even then, don’t recommend the faint hearted or those of a certain disposition to witness… It’s not a pretty sight! I fall into the car, then departure is more of a rolling out exercise then a movement more attune to a Cirque du Soleil artiste. Why are those spaces so small? Am assuming it’s the promise of an infinite amount of car parking spaces, regardless of whether you can actually fit. Plus there’s the parking charges. Personally, I think it’s very expensive. Week day parking (not SMART parking): 0-1 hour - £2.80 / 1-2 hours £5.60 / 2-24 hours £6.70 So as a result, if inclined to visit Westfield Stratford and wanting to spare yourself parking trauma… there’s always the train. And as the 1988 slogan used to say: ‘Let the train take the strain’… And I’m topping up my Oyster card. n

Instead, the owners of the cars themselves vote on which they deem to be the most elegant. s an experienced Aesthetic Nurse Consultant I usually find that people are still wary of considering dermal fillers to enhance, define and naturally contour facial flaws. Typically due to negative media coverage, celebrities and public figures who may have gone “too far’ and furthermore lack of knowledge on how dermal fillers integrate with our skin tissue. I believe the reason for increased demand is that clients are moving away from surgical intervention, the reality is for anyone having surgery they will still need to use dermal fillers, muscle relaxants and skin rejuvenation treatments. Surgery will not address ageing issues forever. Over the years I have been able to successfully use dermal fillers to the neck, face, hands and décolletage to treat the signs of ageing. Over time collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis of the skin break down, muscles start to lose tone and the face begins to sag which results in a jowl

HOW PARENTS CAN IDENTIFY WHEN A CHILD SHOULD SEE A SPECIALIST In Conversation With Mr. Kumar – ENT Surgeon WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
M
r. Gaurav Kumar (ENT Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon) is a highly revered surgeon who has successfully performed over 1000
ear surgeries. He is locally based at Roding and Brentwood Spire Hospitals and the Nuffield Health in Brentwood. As one of the very few consultants who use Lasers and Endoscope (for certain procedures) he is respected for his ability to minimise discomfort whilst facilitating a fast recovery. Michelle: As a respected and locally based ENT surgeon, I have read that other surgeons refer complex ear cases to you. Why is that? Mr. Kumar It is predominantly because of the amount of surgeries that I have performed and my experience with Lasers and Endoscope in the ear. Very few surgeons are using this method but it has an outstanding safety record and is far less invasive. Michelle: is would be particularly good with children. Mr. Kumar: Yes indeed. No parent likes to see their child in discomfort and surgery is always a worry for them, even if a minor and routine procedure. Michelle: In your experience, what is the most common ENT surgical procedure necessary for children and why? Mr. Kumar: Most parents consult me because they are worried about their children. It maybe they can’t hear properly, have frequent sore throats, loud snoring and other problems. Michelle: I know glue ear is a common childhood problem. What signs should parents or teachers look out for? Mr. Kumar: Normally the child will have difficulty hearing. Sometimes parents may think
the child is ignoring them or a teacher may feel the child is not listening and they are falling behind in their school work. In any scenario where there is a possibility a child cannot hear properly, before pursuing any other course of action, it is worth having a specialist to make a thorough check-up. Michelle: What’s the recovery time for Grommets for glue ear? Mr. Kumar: It’s only a few days, perhaps 2 to 3 days. It’s minor procedure and for the child and even the parents, this can be life-changing. Michelle: I know that both my children needed their tonsils and adenoids removed which I think is still quite common. What is the recovery from a tonsillectomy using the latest technology? Mr. Kumar: Again, it is a short recovery. Normally 10 days should be sufficient. Removal of adenoids and tonsils used to be a more complicated procedure but it’s far simpler now with new coblation technology. Michelle: What else is a major concern for parents? Mr. Kumar: Sleep disorders. If a child is noisy breathing at night and parents can hear loud noises such as choking or loud snoring. is should never be ignored. ere can be various reasons for the problem such as being overweight, enlarged tonsils or adenoids but whatever the cause, it must be checked out and a proper diagnosis made. It is not recommended to self-diagnose or ignore these symptoms. With the summer holidays now imminent, it is a particularly good time to rectify a problem before going back or starting school. Yet still have plenty of time left for holidays and recreational fun. n

Potted plants for you The choice of plants that we can grow at home is huge. We asked specialists in green interiors, Ola and Weronika from Projekt RoĞliny (eng. Project Plants), which ones are currently the most popular: “The popularity of individual plants is constantly changing, because the green trend is not weakening, and green people are hungry for more and more interesting species. Monstera, pilea, in other words, small coin, different varieties of beautifully-colored kalatei, as well as sweet succulents, are invariably very popular. Oxalis, the leaves of which resemble butterflies, has recently entered salons. We also noticed that the various types of philodendrons that attract attention with their leaves of an interesting shape are very popular,” say Ola and Weronika. Wallpaper and wall murals with a plant motif are a way to get rid of boredom, optically enlarge a space, and above all, experience full communing with nature. This sweet and elegant yet casual combination of succulent green and pastel pink is very popular. White and all the colors of the earth, like beiges and browns of various shades- ideal for lovers of the classics and minimalism, are all good backgrounds for green compositions. Fortunately, not all green beauties become pests after sunset. “All palms, sanseveirs, as well as peace lily and ferns are recommended for the bedroom. These are plants that actually release a lot of oxygen into the air, but we always emphasize that any plant is good to enrich the interior with a little bit of nature, and above all they add warmth and uniqueness into our home spaces.” - state Ola and Veronica. A good choice for peaceful sleep also includes aloe vera and the jade plant that not only do not take away oxygen, but produce it to make us sleep even better.
Decorations made from natural materials such as rattan, wicker and raw wood match very well with plant interiors in an urban jungle climate. Woven baskets, wooden frames and small chests standing between pots will prove to be a decoration and gadgets for storing small items. Ceramic trinkets, such as a monster-shaped vase, a box or a book stand that looks like a cactus, are the icing on a green cake. If you do not have an idea for a change in your home, start with a poster or picture and a few pots with easy-to-grow plants, gather experience and create your own jungles in your home. How can you begin your adventure with home gardening? “When bringing home a plant, it is always worth reading about it. There is a lot of valuable information on the internet and in books. Then it is worth observing how it feels in our space and tries to adapt to the prevailing conditions. If it is very dry in our house, it is possible that, despite following the recommendations, you may need to water it more often, or on the contrary, if we have humidity - less. Observation and an attempt to understand our plants is the key to proper care. A bit of commitment and good intentions will certainly suffice. “- advise Ola and Weronika. IT TAKES A TEAM TO RAISE A HOUSE T
Space acted as architect and lead consultant on this new expansive residential dwelling in North East London. e original backland site was once an orchard that belonged to one of the houses that backs on to it. A gap between houses provides driveway access; the development as a whole is low key with very little street presence. e design grew out of the planning constraints of the existing site - the long elevations which face neighbours are planted green walls, such that they recede into the existing tree cover, whereas the elevation to the garden is entirely glazed. Internally, the layout is simple, with the principal rooms radiating from a central internal courtyard which throws daylight deep into the plan. e building is timber framed – this decision was driven by the geometry of the walls and cladding system rather than access issues. e frame was all cut and installed on site by traditional carpenters. Despite its size, the house is designed with as small a footprint as possible and is highly insulated. e lighting is LED based and low consumption appliances are used throughout. It relies on a ground source heat pump and solar panels for heating and hot water, and utilises heat recovery units as part of a whole-house ventilation system.

To carry a project from concept to completion demands a wide range of skills, a wider range than any one person can embody. e creativity that launches a project is a very different skill from the doggedness that will overcome the statutory hurdles or the discipline required to manage the project program. So the best outcomes are achieved by a team. e team at T Space has taken several years to assemble. Each member has specific strengths, and every project requires input from the different team members at different times. In this way, projects benefit from a greater skillset than a smaller practice can offer. It’s the best of both worlds, a lead architect backed by a team. We are also unusual in carrying non fee earning staff whose role is to maintain the smooth running of the practice and assist in client liaison.

fter a long day, you should be able to retreat to a place of tranquility and calm in order to relax and catch up on some precious sleep. Design and decor can play a huge role in making sure your bedroom is the oasis it should be. There’s a lot of talk about getting the ‘wow’ factor for rooms, but in bedrooms you’re really seeking the ‘aaah’ factor’. You should immediately feel your shoulders drop as you shed tension and realise that this is where you can truly be yourself and unwind. When decorating your bedroom, simplicity is the key to serenity. So no matter what your particular style is, all you need to do to create a sumptuous oasis is heed a few basic but important design ideas. If you’re having trouble sleeping, it might be because of the paint colour in your room. Colours that are too bright or bold can actually keep you awake. Light colours are great for making a room feel larger, but a darker hue envelops the bedroom, creating the perfect space to relax and slumber. If you need to have something bold, painting a feature wall behind your head may give you the punch you’re looking for without interrupting your sleep. The bed is obviously the focal point, but at the end of the day, it’s the finishing touches that will turn a bedroom into the ultimate personal comfort zone. Whether your bedroom is covered in carpet or hardwood, rugs are a great way to add colour, texture and of course, warmth underfoot. Try layering rugs in different shapes and patterns for an extra-comfy look. You need to clear any clutter, allow space for you to breathe! The only items that should be in your bedroom are the items you love and care to look at every morning and evening, like family photographs. If you are trying to make your bedroom as cosy as possible, bright overhead lighting will not help. Instead, opt for sleek bedside lighting whether that be a wall mounted sconce or a simple lamp. It has to be bright enough to allow for reading in bed, but not overwhelming or (gasp!) fluorescent. Anything with a dimmer is ideal. Scent your room with essential oils. In aromatherapy, a number of scents are recognised for reducing stress. Relaxing scents include bergamot, chamomile, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, orange, sandalwood, valerian and ylang-ylang. Your bedroom should be a place of rest and relaxation. You should look forward to retreating there at the end of the day.
