INSURING A CLASSIC CAR W

ith interest rates still low, some people are now looking for alternative investment options. Whilst art, gold and diamonds have been seen by some as alternatives to stocks and shares, it is a little-known fact that in recent years some classic cars have outperformed traditional alternative investments. e term ‘classic’ is a much-discussed point in the car collecting world. Some collectors believe a ‘classic’ to be pre-1978 (which is the current age at which road tax exemption oﬃcially kicks in) whilst others believe a classic car is anything older than 25 years. Classic car insurance can apply when a car is over 20 years old. But the one thing that all car lovers agree on is that for a car to truly be a classic, it must be able to prove its worth in terms of design and be a joy to own. According to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, wine investments went up by 3% in 2017, watches by 4%, coins by 10% and classic cars by 28%. However, before you dash oﬀ to the next classic car auction, there are some important points to consider. As with any specialist area of investment, there are pitfalls to watch out for, not least the condition and authenticity of the car at the point of purchase. Whilst a car may be a design classic, it is also old and may require extensive work before it is ready to drive. Equally, it may already have had significant restoration work which, if of

dubious quality, could both damage the value of the vehicle and hide a multitude of other sins. e cost of high quality repairs and restoration can quickly escalate to overtake the rate of increase in the value of the car, so before buying the vehicle, make sure you are aware of any work which is required. e other big considerations are storage and insurance. Ideally classic cars should be kept in covered, secure conditions, preferably temperature controlled, and it is important to check your insurance policy wording as there may be restrictions which apply - your broker can tell you more. Your insurance broker can also help you with locating the kind of breakdown cover you will need. ink carefully about the kind of driving you will be doing. Classic cars are rarely used as an everyday drive, and your broker can advise on any discounts available for reduced mileage, and also any extra coverage required for special journeys such as driving holidays abroad. Your broker can also check whether there are specialist policies available, for example those which cover both classic and modern vehicles, so that you can insure your everyday and your classic car on the same policy. Finally, think about whether you need extra insurance options such as key replacement cover and cover for authentic replacement parts – both are obviously major costs for rare vehicles. is is not an area where cheap generic spares will do the job. n

ycling in Epping Forest is a great way to get away from it all, keep fit, train for a special event or just explore more of London's largest open space. ere are over 80km of multi-user paths in the Forest to explore, including our nine waymarked trails. Cyclists can cycle across most of Epping Forest. e paths are multi-user, unless marked otherwise, so there's plenty to discover. Please be aware of other users when cycling in the Forest and keep to the cycling code of conduct. Check out the nine waymarked trails on the running and walking page for short, easy-to-navigate routes. Most of Wanstead Park is closed to cyclists. ere is however a permissive cycle route which runs between the entrance on Northumberland Avenue (opposite Wanstead Park Avenue) between the two lakes to the entrance near Heronry Pond at the very end of Warren Road. Here this permissive route joins the cycle path, which runs between the top entrance at Warren Road and the entrance on Northumberland Avenue opposite Park Road. You can cycle on bridleways in the buﬀer lands, but unlike in the

Forest, there is no open access for cyclists and footpaths are not multi-user. Please keep to bridleways and give way to horse riders and walkers. Dog walking - Dog walking is one of the most popular activities in Epping Forest and provides great exercise for humans and canines alike! You and your four-legged friend can explore the Forest freely, but please make sure that your dog is kept on the lead or under control at all times. Be aware that your dog can upset our livestock and the wildlife living in the Forest, especially deer and ground nesting birds like skylarks. Please be conscious of other Forest users too. Please clean up after your dog too. Dog waste is not only unpleasant for humans but also damages the delicate ecological balance of the Forest. You can put the waste in any of the litter bins in the car parks or surrounding streets or take it home with you. Whether you wish to escape the urban sprawl and unwind, or want something a little more active, Epping Forest has something for you. ere are also four visitor centres with exhibitions, special events and friendly staﬀ. n © City of London

FROM KINDERGARTEN TO YOUNG ADULTS

raeside School oﬀers a small, personalised education for girls in Buckhurst Hill, and Normanhurst is a growing school for boys and girls in North Chingford. e two schools take children from 2½ to 16, and between them they make up half of the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group. We talk to Claire Osborn, Headmistress of both schools, about the provision of an excellent education from Kindergarten all the way up to Year 11. Q: What are the benefits of Braeside and Normanhurst taking children from 2½ to 16? A: With many of our children pupils at both schools since the age of 2 or 3, we can provide continuity of education in familiar surroundings by teachers who know then well. e progression from each stage to the next is well-supported to ensure that the pupils’ education is continually enhanced. Q: What are the benefits of attending the Kindergarten at Braeside or Normanhurst from 2½ rather than a local nursery? A: We have a real emphasis on learning in our Kindergartens, with a strong history of enabling the children to flourish. e curriculum is based around the seven Early Learning Goals, but is enriched with a wide range of additional activities including Music, Computing and PE lessons; French and Drama workshops; assemblies, performances, trips and outings. Being attached to a school we also have many subject specialists at our disposal. Our children have excellent relationships with their dedicated keyworkers, who are responsible for monitoring their progress and development. Observations are made electronically and evidence is emailed home regularly. e children often exceed their expected levels of progress.

Both Braeside and Normanhurst provide happy and secure environments in which to learn, with a generous provision of space, large classrooms and dedicated outside learning areas that allow for ‘free flow’ to encourage creativity. Q: How do you support working parents with wrap-around care? A: ere are daily breakfast and teatime clubs available from 7.30am until 6pm and an extensive range of extra-curricular clubs and activities as well as holiday clubs including multi-sports, Early Years and drama. Q: What happens at 11+ for pupils who join Braeside and Normanhurst from outside? A: Many of the children who join us in Year 7 at Braeside and Normanhurst come from other local state or independent schools. We have joint entrance exams in January and March, and I interview each family before oﬀering places. e induction process minimises what can be a daunting experience, and our existing children who move up to Year 7 are friendly and accommodating. Both schools have been extremely successful at GCSE. At Braeside this year, 95% of grades achieved were at grade 4 or above, equivalent to a previous grade C or higher. 47% of grades were at grades 7-9, equivalent to the previous grades A*or A. ere were 100% passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Art, History, Drama, Maths and RS. At Normanhurst 87% of grades achieved were at grade 4 or above, equivalent to a previous grade C or higher, with a quarter at grades 7-9, equivalent to the previous grades A*or A. Once again the pupils achieved particularly well in the creative and performing arts, with 100% passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Art, Graphics, Music, Drama, English Literature and French. n

But a stroll during a beautiful autumnal day can be reminder of the scale of this patchwork of local open spaces, which form some 6,000 acres of unified ancient woodland which is internationally protected for its conservation importance. Protecting the Forest is vitally important in ensuring it remains for future generations. at’s also why it’s important the children of today learn to love and care for it. And what better way to introduce them to it than through play? Play in a natural environment helps a child to develop a healthy lifestyle, improve and maintain physical and mental wellbeing as well as a whole range of social skills. Epping Forest, which is managed by the City of London Corporation, is the perfect playground and oﬀers endless ways to spark a child’s

imagination. Autumn is the one of the best times of year to visit the Forest with its varied spectrum of leaf colour. Why not encourage the children to collect a range of coloured leaves and create their own natural work of art by making a rainbow collage? Fallen branches oﬀer a fantastic habitat for bugs and are a great place to start a bug hunt. When we undertake tree management we also sometimes leave piles of branches and logs to be used for den building. Dens can become very elaborate and take whole days to make if all the details are added. You can even name your den by arranging twig letters at its ‘front door’. Trees of course provide a true nature’s playground for climbing and balancing. We don’t encourage climbing our protected ancient trees but there are always plenty of huge old fallen trunks that provide daring challenges. A walk through the Forest can be brought alive for children by spotting the faces in the knots of the trees and making up stories about them. e many streams that cross the Forest are beginning to refill in Autumn and are great fun to splash across. Playing with diﬀerent textures such as sand, gravel and mossy places can be achieved in this one Forest with its varied environments. Opportunities for natural play are limitless and ever-changing, better than any formal play facility as you never know what you’re going to encounter, spot, discover or learn on this journey into nature in your ‘neck of the woods’. n

LOCAL BUSINESS NETWORK SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY Michelle Harris interviews Jeff Markham – a CRY representative.

RY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is currently receiving a lot of press about their life-saving work. It is a startling statistic that every week at least 12 young people die from an undetected heart condition. Wanstead Business Network (WBN) are actively raising funds for the charity and will be holding a 1970s/1980s themed disco at Wanstead Golf Club in November. Funds raised will be used to support the FREE screenings, support of CRY’s involvement with research and the counselling of bereaved families. Michelle: CRY offers a fantastic service which is saving many hundreds of lives through their screening process. Why did you get involved? Jeff: Because and very sadly, my son James, had an undetected heart condition. He died seventeen years ago… He was 21. My involvement comes out of the grief for my loss and to help other families be spared the pain of losing a child to this silent killer. Michelle: I am so very sorry to hear this… Your grief is every parent’s worst nightmare. ank you for speaking at WBN’s event on behalf of CRY… Jeff: My commitment is continually motivated by helping others. I visit schools, go to clubs and promote awareness; educating parents, teachers and also young people about the condition and how potentially, it can be addressed before it results in a fatality.

Michelle: What is the response? Are people aware? Are people surprised? Jeff: Mixed in as much as some people are aware of us (CRY) and where family members have been affected. Other people are still fairly in the dark. What is encouraging is that when speaking to schools, I am normally invited back to speak again to the next year 12 cohort about the importance of screening. Michelle: Are you aware of the percentage of young people that are referred to a cardiologist as a result of screening? Jeff: What we find is a generalisation; for every screening we do and which includes an ECG is that approximately 1 in 300 are referred for further tests which result in a diagnosis. Each screening session will normally see 100 young people in a day. Michelle: I have read that CRY have 4 vans and also screen at hospitals. If you’re seeing 500 young people per day, the statistics are 1-2 will be referred per day. Jeff: Yes. is is potentially saving lives and in the words of one of our cardiologists, when a young person dies, what are we losing? A person’s potential, the contribution they may have made and also the trauma that their family goes through. I can only describe it as insurmountable grief… ere is no replacement for my son and my motivation is to spare others a pain that goes beyond words or comprehension. n

DANCING WITH THE STARS Ballroom Giant Gary Edwards from Essex fills the legendary Arthur Murray’s dance shoes

merican TV’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ all Access judge Gary Edwards is ultimate brand ambassador for the globally established Arthur Murray Dance studios. As one of the world’s foremost dance judges, Gary has been dancing since the age of seven. His mother encouraged him to take his first steps, since when he has won over 30 international dancing titles, including the British Open Ballroom and the British Open Latin and having judged 47 World Championships, Gary is ultimately qualified to blaze this trail. Arthur Murray Dance Studios has been teaching the world to dance since its founder, Arthur Murray, opened its doors 106 years ago. Teacher to the stars and dance legend Arthur Murray has been sharing his talents with the world since 1912, when he taught his first class at the Grand Palace in New York City. Murray has boots that only the best of the best can fill, and Britain’s Gary Edwards is the man for the job. Hotly

tipped to replace Len Goodman as head judge on Strictly Come Dancing last year, Gary’s credentials include teaching the King of Pop Michael Jackson the Cha-Cha-Cha when he was working for the Royal Family of Brunei, not to mention being engaged to instruct legends like Barry White, Whitney Houston and MC Hammer. Arthur Murray himself landed his first job as a dance teacher in New York City when he was just 17 years old, and his hard work and sheer talent allowed him to build the empire we see today. Murray himself taught a litany of incredibly famous names that included Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller and the Duke of Windsor, as well as our very own Madge. Murray's first dance studio was located in Atlanta, and local radio broadcasts of his dance instruction rapidly became essential listening. In 1923, business was booming which propelled Arthur to return rapidly to New York City to oversee the company’s expansion. By 1946, Murray formally incorporated the franchise school business known as ‘Arthur Murray Dance Studios’, with 72 studios. Nowadays, the Arthur Murray brand is a multi-million dollar empire with 272

studios in 22 countries and Gary Edwards is their celebrity ambassador. Gary, who divides his time between homes in Miami Beach and Essex is back in the UK, spearheading a national campaign to get Britain dancing. He has enlisted Arthur Murray Dance Studios and Arthur Murray UK, as well as a galaxy of celebrity dance friends to promote the many benefits of dancing. Gary will be on the road, travelling the UK to judge competitions as well as visiting schools, residential care homes and disabled groups to showcase the social and lifestyle, physical and mental health benefits of dance. So, come on Britain, may we have this dance? n

The purpose of a wiill is to ensure that your chosen beneficiariess receive your assets upon your death. Your o assets at the date of your death are comm monly referred to as your “estate.” Most peoplle do not consider a Will necessar y unless they y own a proper t y or have thriving savings and investments, but in actual fact Wills can be nec cessar y however modest your estate. Considerr your bank account af ter pay day, your car, jewe eller y and personal items. If you have children, yo ou can include a provision appointing the most suitable guardians. Your preferred funeral arrangements can also be included. A properly d draf ted Will can last a long time although we suggest that you review your will ever y 5 years or so. Over time what you own can change dra amatically. It is therefore best to have somethin ng in place and to review this as your position in n life changes.

What is probate? ‘Pr Probate obate’ is the proce ess of settling the affairs of somebody that hass died. If somebody dies leaving a Will, the Ex xecutor appointed in the Will must apply to th he Probate Registr y for a ‘Grant of Probate’; this is effectively an Order from the Cour t rec cognising that they are authorised to administter the deceased’s affairs. If somebody dies witthout a will (i.e. they die ‘intestate’), a close fam mily member must apply to the Probate Registr y for a ‘Grant of Letters of Administration’ which constitutes their authorit y to administer the dece eased’s affairs. Once they have the appropriate Grant of Representation, the Executor or Adm ministrator can then close the deceased’s acco ounts, sell their proper t y and distribute the proc ceeds in accordance with the will, or other wise e in accordance with the Rules of Intestacy.

How can I save on Inheritance Tax (“IHT”)? Unsurprisingly, this is the most common question that clients ask. There are many methods available to reduce exposure to tax. The most suitable to employ will depend on the individual client’s assets, their marital status, the exemptions available to them and their current and future needs. Each method has its own set of benefits and pitfalls, so full and detailed advice is vital. With careful and strategic planning, it is possible to put a plan in place to ensure that a client’s estate will pass in the most tax efficient way.

I am perfectly able and coping well. Do I need to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA PA A”)? ”)? An LP PA A enables your chosen attorneys to make decisions on your behalf in relation to either your proper t y and finances or your health and welfare. Each decision they make must be in your best interests. Many people consider an LP PA A to only be necessar y in old age or in cases of declining mental capacit y. The trigger for most people in making an LP PA A is a diagnosis of either Alzheimer’s or Dementia. However, an LP PA A can be used in the event of an accident which leads to a physical disabilit y or a sudden serious illness which may leave you unable to cope either permanently or temporarily due to the illness itself or the side effects of its treatment. Life can be unpredictable and without an LP PA A in place your family may struggle to assist you in managing your affairs and may be subject to a long and expensive cour t process before they are able to help you. The cour t is also able to appoint a Deput y that they consider suitable and this may not be the same person that you would have chosen yourself. Whatever your situation, you need to have sufficient mental capacity to make an LP PA A and all too of ten we see clients who have lef t it too late.

pping Forest District Museum was buzzing with visitors over the summer 2018 for all sorts of fantastic creative activities. Why not take a look at what is on oﬀer for October half-term holidays? Budding artists took inspiration for their own works of art in How to Paint…Like an Artist, from artists in the museum’s collection. ey used colour like Walter Spradbery, texture like Lucien Pissaro and painted beautiful watercolours like Jacob Epstein. In our new ‘How to Draw…a Portrait’ workshop, participants got tips and tricks for drawing faces and experienced what it is like to be a model – not as easy as they thought! At the ‘Little Storytellers’ workshop in Ongar, Michael Rosen’s classic tale ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ was used as inspiration for our little explorers to go on a journey through long wavy grass, sticky mud, a deep dark forest and even a snow storm, before creating their own maps and bears. ere was another wacky show from Booster Cushion eatre Company; Old MacDonald and the ree Pigs Plus. e ‘Musical in 2 Days’ workshop cast worked incredibly hard to learn songs, scenes and choreography from Bugsy Malone and were ready to perform in just two days.

Garden and forest Young artists and keen gardeners designed their own flowers, complete with Latin style names; did botanical drawings from plants in the

museum garden and planted their own seeds to watch grow, in ‘Art and the Garden’. Participants designed beautiful prints, inspired by work from the current exhibition ‘Walter Spradbery: Artist in War and Peace’ and the forest in ‘Be a Printmaker’.

Family Fun Over 400 children and their families enjoyed the ‘Family Fun Day’ drop in sessions at both Epping Forest District Museum and Lowewood Museum on Tuesday and ursday afternoons.

hen a good idea, creative innovation or inspired concept excites and astounds, the initial impact that shocked and awed can seldom be replicated. A recent example, in my humble opinion, is the latest Mamma Mia film. e original was fantastic. Loved every minute, joined in the songs and boogied as if we were back in the 70s/80s. However was a tad less excited about the sequel. Cheesier than the fromagerie section of Harrods and even though I salute Judy Craymer for producing another film based upon Abba’s lyrics into a comprehensible format, the proverbial number 2 - was just that – a number 2! e James Bond films are a cinematic institution. ose great arresting openings which leave you spellbound with excitement as some daring feat is backed up with a powerful heart-thumping song. Adele’s dulcet tones for Skyfall engulfed you into a sultry world. And talking of women, with respect to the female roles and at least from 1997, females are more prominent as intellectual leaders (as opposed to predominantly bimbos in bikinis) with the arrival of Judi Dench as M in Tomorrow Never Dies. e films are great, never disappoint and we all have our favourite James Bond. A lesser known fact is that Dick van Dyke was considered as a potential Bond. A rather scary thought… I can’t get past him as the chimney sweep in Mary Poppins with a rather strange accent/voice which sounded as if he needed to have his adenoids removed. Probably the worst British accent ever…

On a literary level, I always savour the storylines of great films, development of characters and immortal one-liners. Where music is appropriate, this adds another dimension to the experience; from Scarface (my favourite) and e Departed to Casablanca and everything in between. Unforgettable characters, cinematic moments which capture a time, place or special line that virtually becomes a cliché due to the frequency of its use. “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world… She walks into mine” and who can fail to capture the image of Humphrey Bogart in a black and white film with Sam (Dooley Wilson) playing “As Time Goes By” in the background… Cinematic legend. And of course, Ingrid Bergman who always looked perfect with an undeniable vulnerability that stirred Bogart’s heart. Plus, I loved her hats and as a result was inspired to acquire my own collection. Film stars have always excited us, whether by their looks, lives or fashion preferences. Yesterday’s actresses are iconic: Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall and Lana Turner. Fascinating women with strong personal stories and acting prowess. Sadly, I feel that very few current day actresses can match their stature or exhilarating film presence. But then again, great originals can seldom be replaced… n

COMBINATION APPROACH TO TREATING THE EYE AREA With Frances Furlong

here are many characteristics that make eyes more beautiful. Some being natural as we are born with, others may be applied. Among the most obvious natural features are the shape and size of the eyes. Eyes can be anything from near slits, to elongated, almond shaped, rounded, sleepy, puﬀy, amongst other shapes and also vary in size. At times it is not so much the eye size but more of their size in relation to the face. After that we get all the exquisite possible eye colours, then the length of your eyelashes, the shape and skin tone of your facial eye sockets and finally the shape, size, and curvature of your eyebrows. Which of all these possible combinations are considered more beautiful largely depends on country, culture and fashion.

Common eye problems and possible treatment options 1. Small eyes due to heavy brow - trying to open up the eye area can be achieved with the use of well placed toxins into specific muscles. THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF A RHINOPLASTY ( NOSE JOB ) Michelle Harris interviews Mr. Gaurav Kumar, ENT Consultant Surgeon

rhinoplasty can be one of the most important decisions of a lifetime. If you’re conscious of your nose, unhappy with its shape, size or tip, can be the cause of much grief, loss of confidence, anger and resentment every time you look in the mirror. But what do you need to consider if contemplating a rhinoplasty? Michelle: Where do you begin to select a surgeon for a nose job? Mr. Kumar: Firstly, it’s important to remember that the nose is far more than just an object on your face. Its primary purpose is to facilitate breathing. But also, who can structure an attractive well-shaped nose? Michelle: Assume it is possible to have a beautiful and functional nose? Mr. Kumar: Absolutely. When considering surgery, to ensure that the specialist operating factors in both the patient’s wish for a perfect (and realistically shaped) nose but also to retain its function and purpose. At worst, you do not want to end up breathing through your mouth for the rest of your life as an alternative to your nose. Michelle: Have you personally, had many patients requiring revision surgery to rectify a rhinoplasty issue? Mr. Kumar: Yes. I would say approximately 10% of my rhinoplasty surgeries are second and revision procedures. is could have been potentially avoided by going to an ENT surgeon in the first instance.

Michelle: How does it work and what is the process? Mr. Kumar: Firstly I will consider the entire face. ere are five symmetrical quadrants; the two ears, area between ear and nose on either side of face, and the fifth quadrant being the nose. It is essential for there to be balance, correct shape to complement the face so the finished result looks natural and absolutely respects the patients’ requirements and objectives. Michelle: How do people feel after their operation? Mr. Kumar: Obviously there is the post-operative recovery time, reduction of swelling and healing but then for most, it’s a new beginning. Most patients are in the 18-25 year group and appearance is very important. For me personally, I feel immense pleasure and pride watching the patient’s journey from somebody who maybe shy and unhappy because of the shape of their nose, to a new person who is infinitely more confident and excited about their future because of their new look. Having a rhinoplasty or indeed any other elective surgery, is a big decision and not one that should be entered into lightly. If considering whether to pursue and wanting to minimise the amount of surgeries that may be needed due to other factors such as potential breathing issues or imbalance, it is absolutely recommended to seek the advice and guidance of an ENT surgeon for a healthy and beautiful nose. n
