TIME TO COME CLEAN ON TAXABLE INCOME FROM OVERSEAS Graham Doubtfire, Tax Director at Scrutton Bland explains how not declaring your overseas income and assets may have serious consequences.
D
o you have income from a business such as a bar or restaurant in Europe? Or perhaps you rent out an overseas property in order to generate extra cash? If you have any income and gains that have come from outside the UK, it’s important that you tell Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) about them, as you may have to pay UK tax on them. If you don’t declare income or gains from your foreign accounts and investments, you could be hit with severe penalties which from next year will get worse, with additional penalties and ‘naming and shaming’. Although this tax legislation has been in place for several months, we are now seeing that the taxman is becoming much more aggressive in pursuing anyone they suspect is concealing income arising from their foreign assets. If HMRC are doubtful about whether you have sufficient income to maintain your lifestyle, then they are likely to target you for investigation. Furthermore, it isn’t just the big boys who are being targeted: we are seeing many more cases of HMRC pursuing modest-sized businesses, especially cash-based businesses. It is important that if you have overseas income and gains that you should have told HMRC about

that you take steps now to bring your affairs up to date, as HMRC are now able to benefit from new international information-sharing arrangements. And when the new rules around electronic tax reporting, known as Making Tax Digital come in, there will be even more information which HMRC can access to determine if any tax is due. For anyone wishing to come clean, a ‘Worldwide Disclosure Facility’ has just come into force which will allow you to declare any UK tax liability which relates wholly or in part to an offshore issue, including: • income arising from a source outside the UK; • assets situated or held outside the UK; • activities carried on wholly or mainly outside the UK; • where the funds connected to unpaid tax are transferred outside the UK. If you think you might be in this position, we suggest that you seek professional advice before participating in the Worldwide Disclosure Facility, particularly if you deliberately did not declare taxable income to HMRC, as the process of calculating your liabilities and completing the disclosure can be very complex. n

FOCUS ON 11+ AT BRAESIDE AND NORMANHURST SCHOOL Braeside School offers a small, personalised education for girls in Buckhurst Hill, and Normanhurst is a growing school for boys and girls in North Chingford. Q: As ‘all through schools’, what are the benefits of Braeside and Normanhurst taking children from 2½ to 16? A: It is unusual to find a small local school that takes children from 2½ up to GCSE level at age 16 in an academic, nurturing environment and we have two! Our academic records are very impressive and the inspection teams always comment very positively about the education we provide. Girls applying from outside the Group, or internally from Oaklands and Coopersale Hall, now sit one 11+ exam for consideration at either Braeside or Normanhurst. Both schools offer some part-scholarships each year to attract children with particular academic abilities or creative talents. Q: How were your recent GCSE results at Normanhurst and Braeside? A: At Braeside 90% of grades achieved were at A* to C, or at the new grade 4 and above in English and Maths. 47% of grades were at A* or A, with 31% of English and Maths grades at the new grades 7, 8 or 9. ere were 100% passes in many subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, RS, Geography, Drama and Art. At Normanhurst 92% of grades achieved were at A* to C, or at grade 4 and above in English and Maths. Pupils achieved 100% A* to C grades in subjects such as Art, Graphics, History, Drama, IT, RS, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. We were delighted with both sets of GCSE results, which are a testament to our pupils’ hard work and commitment as well as the dedication and expertise of their teachers. Q: Where do pupils go when they have to leave Braeside and Normanhurst at 16? A: We prepare our pupils for next stage of their education and for a variety of courses. Most move to local schools in the area, which are either selective independent sixth forms (often with scholarships), grammar schools or local state schools or colleges. n

hree intrepid young men from estate agents Butler & Stag are planning to climb the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in 'one go', over 24 hours, to raise vital funds for the eydon Bois Playground Appeal. eir ree Peaks Challenge gets underway on the weekend of Saturday 28th October when Neil Leahy, Michael Woolley and Tyler Dunkin will be testing themselves against rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions. e three-man band work together at estate agents Butler & Stag’s eydon Bois office. ey have challenged themselves to raise £10,000 so that children using eydon Bois playground can have a safer and more secure future with new, updated equipment. Butler & Stag co-owner Neil Leahy said “I know it seems a mad thing to do but we are fit young guys who want to help young people here in eydon Bois. Facilities like the playground are an essential part of what makes eydon Bois such a delightful place to live. It’s the heartbeat of
the community for villagers with young children and grandchildren. While the existing facility has provided years of pleasure, time has run out on the equipment and for safety reasons, much has been removed. It’s essential it’s replaced with robust apparatus as soon as possible so raising funds is key.” e Playground at eydon Appeal, a registered charity, must raise £115k including insurance and maintenance. To date £75k has been raised but the remaining £40k is a daunting challenge. Pupils at eydon Bois Primary School will be closely following the challenge and adding their support. Shelly Dix, Chair of Playground at eydon said “e Appeal has been ongoing for a year so we have done well but we need everyone local to stake a claim in a better and more secure playground facility for our young people. atalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Tudors) and David Oakes (Victoria) star in the West End premiere of VENUS IN FUR now playing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. NETWORKING, BUSINESS AND THE SCHOOL PLAYGROUND WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
T
he title of this column at first glance, looks like an oxymoron. Business and playground?… Women are (allegedly) natural networkers; multitasking whilst looking out for their own children and offspring of friends and family. If you want to find a good maths or English tutor, you could Google, glance through Mumsnet.com but for facts, experience and testimonials, ask some mothers (or house husbands/fathers) in the playground. Whether from their smart phone or address book, you will immediately be given various options. So what does it take to be a natural networker? a) Active listener and without an agenda b) Being prepared and able to juggle networking alongside business commitments c) Cross networking in order to offer business opportunities to others d) Being prepared to give rather than looking to just take e) Systems which strategise new contacts and their details f ) Being courteous and respectful g) Ability to have a conversation with a complete stranger and quickly gain their trust and respect. During a meeting with Chan Mehta of The Cleaning Company in South Woodford, I casually asked her the secret

to her best referral. It was a chance enquiry from a fellow parent in the playground who knew the facilities manager of a major UK retailer. I therefore considered my own client base and I too, could substantiate the theory. Approximately twenty years ago and when my now adult children were still in primary school, waiting by the school gate and having a casual conversation with another mother, she asked if I knew a writer? She had heard that I published on a regular basis and wanted to help ‘a friend of a friend’ and did I know anyone? That one line catapulted my business from start-up into an international operation which over the decades, has facilitated numerous trips to exotic and worldwide destinations. This ‘friend of a friend’ is still my client and I could not put a price on the value of that enquiry. So as the children go back to school and whilst waiting at the school gates (football sessions or ballet classes) if you’re looking to set-up business or simply to make new contacts either for your business or to help others, strike up a conversation with another parent. Who knows how you could benefit or be in a position to help others. It’s not the person we are speaking to at any given time, it’s also everybody else that they might know… n

ou can trace its roots back to a beespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in n the East End of London in the eaarly 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Yeang K Keat in Penang, Malaysiaa in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned d from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his firstt pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wan nted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recallls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let m me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch,, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did th hat.” After learning from his father about the crraft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers T Tec echnical College in Hackneyy,, where he graduated g with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital buildingg.. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional ptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 3 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the Cityy..” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue mag Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would pro Vogue ove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularityy,, Choo w was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots,, sens sensed sed a larg larger market for Choo’s creatiions. She approached the shoemakerr about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear r footwear -

JIMMY CHOO with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every singlee pair had to be made by Choo himselff.. They contraacted with Italian factories and opened their first bo outique shop in Motcomb Street, Street London. Tw Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing s locations in the premiere luxury shop pping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Av Avenue in New York City and York a Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Juulia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. Internatio onal expansion continued with Jimmy Choo storess opening in Av Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condottti in Rome Rome, Ginza in T Tok okyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Streett and Bond Stree St t here in London. But in th he background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In n what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, y, Choo didn’t didn think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoees the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear fo or specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Ben nsoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 milllion. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more th han £500m. Today, Toda y, Jimm Jim mmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. I
had some great news recently that I was accepted into the position of a new surgical tutor for the award winning Medical and Aesthetic Training Academy (MATA). Why am I so excited about this? Well, two reasons, firstly MATA are one of the best training academies in the UK and are based in Harley Street, London. I completed my foundation and advanced cosmetic training with them, and am currently undertaking my postgraduate Level 7 qualification in Aesthetic Medicine with them as well. ey also provide accredited Royal College of GP’s training in minor operations and joint injections.
Secondly, I am extremely passionate about teaching and I have always enjoyed teaching from an early age. I started volunteering as a teaching assistant for summer schools when I was 17, and continued through university and as a doctor. Also, my mother used to be a teacher, which was an inspiration for me. I remember during my time in plastic surgery and orthopaedic surgery, I organised regular practical surgical training sessions for medical students and junior doctors. It has always been important for me to give something back to my juniors and colleagues, and my ambition of excellence led me to undertake a Masters in Surgical Education at the world-renowned Imperial College London. is was undertaken as a part time degree along my hospital work, it was an intense and tough 2-year course, but extremely rewarding. I remember completing my 20,000 word dissertation with my newly born baby in my arms…now that was hard work! I believe its important to be treated by someone who is highly qualified in their field, and to be able to teach effectively you need to know the topic inside out. his month’s feature focuses on cutaneous ageing and the menopause. Let's be honest, as a female, hormones are blamed for everything, but one thing is for sure, they can play havoc with your skin. Long before menopause, hormonal shifts start showing their signs on your face. To maintain a healthy balanced skin, you need to start treating your hormonal skin issues safely, from the outside and the inside. e menopause is the result of a decline and change in hormone levels, it typically affects women around the age of 50-53 years.
Oestrogen When it comes to popular hormones, oestrogen takes the prize for being the most widely known and discussed. It is primarily the sex hormone but it also helps our skin and hair remain youthful and is responsible for skin thickness, skin moisture and wrinkle formation. Vitamin A, a great track record in increasing collagen and controlling pigmentation try Obaji Brightinex retinol. Oestrogen can increase the Hyaluronic Acid content in the skin by maintaining fluid balance and structural integrity. ey can also increase collagen production in the skin, allowing the skin to remain plump, hydrated and wrinkle-free. It plays a major role in the collagen and elastin network of the skin. ith autumn upon us, it’s time to think about what you can plant now that will giivve you greenery and colour in your garden throughout the cooler months. It’s also a great time to plant up a container, which can be put on the patio to brighten up the garden, or placed by the front door to welcome guests. Sarah Squire, deputy chair man at Squire’s Garden Centres, advises: “The key things to remember are choose a container that you like the look off,, add good quality compost, and abo ove all, choose plants you love. “Think about colour combinations - make sure you include some evergreen plants and then add either vibrant reds, oranges and yellows for an autumnal feel, or choose pinks, purples and whites for a softer, more romantic look.”

A large skimmia, which is an evergreen shrub with clusters of attractiivve flowers and berries, makes a great focal point. Plant bulbs such as Narcissus ‘Tete-a-T Tete’ ete’ miniature daffodils daffodils, irises and muscari to giivve an injection of colourr early next year. A FIRST TIME BUYER MOVES BACK TO HER ROOTS
W
hen first-time buyer Claire omas sought to buy her first home, she looked back to the place where she grew up to discover an area that would suit all her needs. Working as a management consultant in London meant that Claire needed to find a location that would allow her easy access into town. As a single buyer, she also needed to find an area that she would feel safe and happy every day. After researching various options, Claire discovered Loughton in Essex, which is just half an hour by public transport from Central London. “I wanted to be on the tube for work and getting into town and it is good that Loughton is on the night tube too,” says Claire. “I grew up in Essex but haven’t lived there for a long time, so it is nice to come back to my roots. e location feels quiet and safe but with enough going on with the shops nearby.” Claire decided that a new build would suit all her needs including being able to finance the purchase through Help to Buy, which she was able to take advantage of. “I wanted the ten-year building guarantee and no hassle because this is my first property purchase,” explains Claire. “I also wanted something clean and modern that nobody else had lived in.” Landmark is a new residential development in Loughton comprising 64 one- and two-bedroom apartments complemented by new retail space at street level and office space on the seventh floor. Created by local developer Higgins Homes, the highly contemporary, stylish building plays a major role in the exciting redevelopment of the area. “Landmark is close to the tube and there is also parking, which would help my commute every day,” says Claire. “I knew I wanted a new build but didn’t want it to be a huge development of hundreds of flats because that

I also like the idea of having some retail space on the lower floor.” e development ticked all the boxes in terms of location, look and feel and the high specification internally sealed the deal for Claire. “ere are really good-sized bedrooms, built-in wardrobe in the master bedroom, balcony with lovely views of the Essex countryside and a great storage cupboard, adds Claire.” Higgins has ensured that the design details at Landmark’s apartments make a big impression on buyers. ere are stylish open-plan, glossy kitchens, contemporary bathrooms and en-suites and indulgent touches everywhere. “ere are lots of wow factors such as the kitchen with all integrated Smeg appliances,” says Claire. “With the well-considered lighting, it has been designed to feel very modern and high end.” As a first-time buyer, Claire naturally had some worries at the beginning but was pleasantly surprised at the ease of the whole process. “I was concerned about all the finances coming together and my mortgage getting approved in a short space of time but in reality it was really smooth because I had a good broker and solicitor recommended by Higgins,” she said. “I got all my paperwork in order and they were efficient in making it happen. e Higgins sales people are lovely, offering a friendly and personal service. ey made me feel very special because it was my first purchase.” Claire moved into her new apartment at the end of July, and is already stamping her own style onto it as she explains: “I have already bought lots of new things for my place; furniture and accessories and put a few essentials up like hooks on the back of doors and curtain poles. Next, I will be looking to make the balcony feel more ‘done’ and paint the bedrooms. I live on my own so I am going to make the second bedroom a bedroom/office.” n
