SOME SHELTER FROM THE TAX MAN
Michelle Groves, Independent Financial Adviser at Scrutton Bland has some useful ideas for taking a bit of financial cover from the tax man.
A
s autumn weather takes hold and with Christmas and New Year just around the corner, your thoughts are probably full of festive plans and ideas for presents and entertaining. But spare a thought for the other slightly-less-celebratory date that is rapidly approaching, namely the 31st January deadline for submitting your Self Assessment tax return. If you want to take advantage of any tax allowances or reliefs then these need to be sorted out before that date. By making use of your annual tax free allowances, a couple consisting of a higher rate tax payer (an income tax rate of 40% and above) and a non-tax payer who have capital to invest could generate tax-free income and gains of up to £60,500 per year. is figure doesn’t include the additional tax free interest/dividends available from ISAs and Income Tax relief which can be claimed by making a pension contribution. Making a pension contribution can generate up to 45% income tax relief on the contribution, which is claimable via self-assessment. Individuals who do not have relevant earnings can also contribute up to £3,600 per annum into a pension and claim £720 in income tax relief. ose who are comfortable with investment risk might consider other investments which offer tax relief, such as Enterprise Investment Schemes (EIS) and Venture Capital 1 2 NOVEMBER 2016
Trusts (VCTs). ese invest into a portfolio of shares in unquoted UK companies and offer Income Tax relief of up to 30% on the amount invested and potential for tax free income and/or growth. It should be noted that these types of investments are considered as high risk and you may not get back all of the capital you have invested. Tax legislation is notoriously complex and you should never make any decisions on tax or investment without consulting an independent, qualified professional adviser, such as those at Scrutton Bland. ey will work with you to find the right course of action, and furthermore will look at the whole of the market, rather than a narrow range of products. RECOGNISING A POTENTIAL CANCER THREAT An Interview With Louise Malina of Buckhurst Hill

ometimes a chance encounter can change your whole life’s direction. It may be something simple and in the most unlikely of places. Even at Boots the Chemists… Louise had a pretty normal day out with her mother when they noticed a leaflet entitled GCAPPS – Genetic Cancer Prediction rough Population Screening. She picked it up, read it and felt she needed to action. e leaflet elaborated upon the extra cancer risks to Ashkenazi Jews (Jews with ancestry from Russia and/or Eastern Europe) who, if they had a high number of cases Louise Malina of breast and ovarian cases of cancer in their family, could potentially have the BRAC1 and/or BRAC 2 mutated gene. In the general population approximately, 1:800 people have these mutated genes but for Ashkenazim it’s 1:40. Louise had the blood test and her worst fears were confirmed, the result was positive which meant that there were huge implications for her and her family. ere has recently been a great deal of publicity about the BRAC 1 and BRAC 2 mutated gene as a result of Angelina Jolie’s recent diagnosis and decision to have surgery. Michelle: So what happened next? Louise: After counselling, it was a no brainer to have a minor operation. e whole process was efficient and felt minor by comparison to the possible alternative. Michelle: And the follow-up because of the risk of breast cancer?
Louise: I have been offered a mammogram every year with the opportunity to have a double mastectomy if required. Michelle: As you have the BRAC 1 mutated gene, did you feel a responsibility to forewarn other members of the family? Louise: ABSOLUTELY. I am telling everyone. I would rather be uncomfortable with this then to see another member of my family battle with cancer. In fact, I want to tell the whole world that if you’re potentially within this group, a simple blood test will empower you to make decisions before you have a major problem. Michelle: And people’s response? Louise: Most people assume cancer is very treatable and would prefer to avoid discussing it rather than confront the problem. is is understandable but ovarian cancer is a silent killer. When you have the symptoms, it can be too late. For me, I would rather know that I had a ‘potential’ problem before a major life-threatening situation. Michelle: What would you recommend if you are concerned: Louise: Step 1: First do a family tree and look for a history of cancer in your family. In particular, breast and ovarian cancer for woman and breast and prostrate cancer for men. Step 2: Go to your GP with your evidence and discuss if you feel you’re in a high-risk category. Step 3: You may be referred to a genetic counsellor and a routine blood test for BRAC1 and/or BRAC2 mutated gene might be offered. Michelle: And if somebody is worried or wants to discuss anything? Louise: FORCE were fantastic. ey’re a charity predominantly in the US who (in particular) help people facing the risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Together with Sue Torok, we run the international division in the UK and based from Essex. Nobody should feel they have to face this alone… ere’s help if you want it and support. n

f the idea of warming mulled wine (or mulled apple) and mince pies, Christmas carols sung by local choirs, beautifully crafted Christmas gifts, children’s Christmas crafts, and visitors from Christmasses gone by appeal, then a visit to the e Beth Chatto Christmas Fayre is a must. It has grown from what used to be some stalls in the acclaimed Tearoom which overlooks the world famous Gravel Garden, to an event with around 40 stalls selling locally sourced and crafted gifts, children’s activities and crafts, music, choirs, hot chocolate, locally sourced warming food, a children’s winter trail around the Gardens and a children’s Christmas story corner... is magical weekend is taking place on 26th-27th November, the ideal time to make Christmas gift purchases for loved ones. ere will be a fantastic selection of handmade and locally crafted gifts, from stallholders who pride themselves on producing items that are unusual, bespoke and make wonderful presents. ominate a young person for the Epping Forest Young Sports Award. e award recognises our district’s young athletes and aims to help them develop further in their chosen sports. Do you know a young person in the district who is dedicated to a sport and deserves a helping hand to further their achievements? Why not nominate them? To be eligible for the award your nominee must: * Be aged 13-25 on or before the closing date for applications 30 November 16 * Competing at county, regional or national level in a nationally governed sport * Live in the Epping Forest District * If at College or University, return ‘home’ to Epping Forest District during the holidays Last year’s winner naiomi Harryman used her bursary to help pay for specialist coaching in her discipline, the Heptathlon, and physiotherapy, to help her overcome injuries. e coaching and extra support has allowed her to train regularly, despite injuries preventing her from competing. Naiomi’s mother said: ”e award has definitely helped Naiomi this year. It has inspired her to keep pushing through!” Since receiving her award in 2015 Naiomi has not been able to compete this year due to the consultant confirming that she needs an operation on her take off foot. However this has not stopped her training and preparing herself for after her op. She has now taken up pole vaulting as part of her prehab. She is a natural talent at this and has been told she could make the Olympics doing pole vault as well as heptathlon. She is now studying Sports Science at Leeds 2 6 NOVEMBER 2016

Awards can range from between £100 to £1000, which can help young people pay for any costs associated with their sporting activity. Have you ever wondered what makes the landscape and ecology of Epping Forest so unique?
A
s the leaves turn and fall, the structure of the trees is revealed and this is a good time of year to appreciate the beauty of the trees themselves. e interesting forms of many of the trees derive from the historic practice of ‘pollarding’, which has been taking place in Epping Forest for well over 1,000 years. Epping Forest can boast to being home to more pollards than any other single place in Britain. So what is a pollard and why is pollarding so fundamental to the Forest’s character and wildlife? Dr Jeremy Dagley, the City of London Corporation’s Head of Conservation at Epping Forest, explains: “A pollard is simply a tree that is cut above head height and allowed to regrow, producing new branches that can be cut on a regular cycle. e cutting cycle was traditionally between 10 – 15 years. e work was done from up in the tree or from the ground by axe, bill-hook, hand-saw, and now chainsaw, to provide a crop of firewood or leaf-fodder for animals. is seemingly simple and straightforward act of regular branch lopping actually brings about profound biological changes in a tree. While the trunk of the tree ages, its canopy is rejuvenated and the life of the tree can be extended hugely, often by many centuries. It is this longevity that makes pollards particularly special, both culturally and ecologically. Hornbeams and beeches, which as uncut trees may only survive for three or four centuries, can live for more than 2 8 NOVEMBER 2016
double this age as pollards. In Epping Forest some beeches have been regenerating since Anglo-Saxon times, representing some of the oldest and largest living creatures in Europe. As the well-known nature-writer Richard Mabey put it, pollards “are the most vivid demonstrations of what can result from a co-operative working relationship between man and nature”. e continuity of pollarding is, therefore, essential to the Forest’s conservation whilst the protection of the Forest itself is a responsibility of international significance.” is month in Epping Forest you can get a great feel for the landscape by attending a Bushcraft event. ere are three to choose from throughout November, with fire lighting on 5 November, a bushcraft brimble on 19 November and tracking and fieldcraft of 20 November. All events take place in the Forest around Chingford and run from 10am – 4pm and cost just £40 per person, (events suitable for 14 years and over). If it’s a bit too chilly outside, you can appreciate Epping Forest from the warmth and comfort of e View (Rangers Road, Chingford) with an exhibition of Epping Forest inspired artwork by local artist, Linda Bondy (exhibition runs from 5 November to 4 December and is open daily, except Monday, 10am-5pm). LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
I
always think very carefully about my column in this magazine and whether I want to write a feature that is humorous, entertaining or perhaps even thoughtful…
As 2016 draws towards a close, next month is Christmas and before you know it, those New Year Resolutions will again be written out. Most of us have at least some of these on our lists: Join a gym, lose weight, improve my business etc. however by the end of the first week in January, some or all resolutions are broken. Rather than consider what feels right, historic or habitual, what if this was to be your last year? What would you ultimately regret? A few weeks ago, I read a feature written by Susie Steiner and published in e Guardian and on their website. An experienced palliative nurse recorded the top five regrets of the dying: 1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.
2. I will not work so hard.* 3. I will have the courage to express my feelings.** 4. I will make more regular contact with my good and cherished friends.*** 5. I will make myself happier. Even if just one or two points reach fruition with the others being on next year’s list, could make such a difference in our final few hours or minutes. So by deciding not to have regrets but to anticipate and therefore facilitating a reflection of a cherished and fulfilled life full of love and happy memories, could framework the lives we lead now. My motto has always been Carpe Diem (seize the moment) because for all of us, life hangs on a thread. We shouldn’t be complacent about health, family or wealth. All we can do is just take one step at a time, enjoy what’s good and make each moment count; to be true to ourselves and to others; to enjoy life because this isn’t a dress rehearsal… is Is It! n *But with proviso to honour responsibilities and commitments. **Probably best to express positive feelings! ***And I don’t mean Facebook. at’s cheating!!
3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. What if instead of preparing ourselves for the final hour, filled with remorse and regret for what might have been, we had indeed allowed time for the ultimate Bucket List and therefore changed “I wish” to “I will…” 1. I will have the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expect of me.

Christmas trees will line the Great Hall, the Gryffindor common room will be dressed for the season and a blanket of filmmaking snow will be meticulously applied to the majestic Hogwarts castle model.

After fter stepping onto the original stone floor of the iconic Great Hall, visitors will spot wreaths, garlands and trees decked with golden baubles that are topped with witches on miniature broomsticks. The long dining tables will be dressed as they were for seasonal feasts at Hogwarts with prop versions of roast turkeys, hams studded with cherries and even flaming Christmas puddings. The Grryffindor yffindor Common Room and Boys’ Dormitorryy will be decorated with the original props including handmade Christmas cards, some of which were made by the cast members during production. Fireplaces throughout the Studio Tour Tour (including those in the Leak kyy Cauldron and Great Hall) will be ‘lit’ with special effects fire, created by John Richardson and the SFX team using a combination of water vapour and lighting effects. Visitors will also see the handknitted jumpers that Molly Weasley Weasley gave Ron and Harry Har for Christmas in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Other costumes on display will include one of the first Christmas presents Harry ever

During film ming, a member of the crew climbed aboard an elevated work platform and sprinkled the ‘snow’ mixture of granulated paper and grains of salt onto the model by hand with a sieve – like dusting sugar onto a cake. The same process will be used at the Studio Tour Tour this November. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN IN THE WINTER MONTHS WITH FRANCES FURLONG

his month I will be focusing on how to fight skin enemies, as the temperature has started to drop heaters have now been turned on and the wind has started to whip, the battle for healthy skin begins. e dry air takes away the thin layer of oil that traps moisture in the skin, flaring itchy and painful conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and severe dry skin. Which are all unpleasant to the sufferer. PREPARING YOUR SKIN 1. Minimise the toll on your skin over the next few months by preparing now. 2. Keep your shower time as brief as possible and use lukewarm, not hot, water, as this is a recipe for dry irritated skin. 3 Switch to less aggressive, moisture-rich soaps made for sensitive skin, such as those made by Dove and Aveeno. 3. Gently pat yourself dry to avoid traumatising or over-drying the skin. 4. Apply moisturiser while your skin is still slightly damp. 5. Bespoke serums that suit your skin type can really help as they penetrate deeper into the skin and help to ease and smooth tight, dry and hypersensitive skin types. 6. For a rich skin clinic treatment, Mesotherapy vitamins and Restylane skin boosters work so well by giving dry skin an in-built moisture system that lasts 6 months and will see you through the winter months. 7. If your skin does flare up, choose soft, breathable fabrics, like cotton, instead of itchy woolens or polyester. Loose-fitting clothing will also help to keep your skin from chafing and becoming irritated by perspiration. Keep away from woolly scarves directly on your bare skin as it can irritate certain skin conditions. 8. Try to stay healthy, eat well and take supplements to boost you as psoriasis and eczema involve immune system responses. Winter also brings a decrease in the amount of sun exposure - not a good thing since sunlight can help relieve psoriasis. Phototherapy is a good treatment for the winter months. n

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT A doctor takes a patient's medical and family historry ry, asks questions about their lifestyle (how active they are and whether they smok smoke, etc), listens to their heart and lungs, and takes their blood pressure and pulse. Thee test can help detect problems with the heart rate and show if a patient is havving a heart attack, or has already had one. An ECG can also show if the heart iss enlarged. However, a normal ECG doesn't rule out significant coronarryy hear heaart disease and other tests may be needed, such as a coronarryy angiogram. ECHOC CARDIOGRAM An echocardiogram ardiogram - also known as an echo - uses sound waves to create a detailed piccture of the heart, similar to ultrasound scans. A probe is moved over the skin n of the chest, giving off pulses of high frequency sound waves which pass through the skin and 'echo' against the heart structures, reflecting them as movving pictures. The echo o also gives information about the heart's function and pumping action. It can n be useful affter ter recent heart attacks or heart failure, and is also used to assess ss people with heart valve problems or congenital heart disease. MRI SCAN A cardiac MRI is used to view the heart's structure and assess how well it's pumping, so o it's useful for checking structural problems including congenital heart diseasee, wear and tear of the valves, heart damage affter ter a hear heart attack, and the amo ount of healthy heart muscle if you have heart failure. MRI scans can also lookk at the heart's blood supply and related conditions, such as angina and coronarryy heart disease. Fitness Motivation Now it is Autumn, and the dark nights start to set in, it can be tempting to stay in the warm rather than go outside or to the gym.Many of us have fallen off the wagon because of this, so you are not alone.

IMAGINATION & MINDFULESS Remind yourself of how amazing you feel once you have completed a workout. Give yourself a pep talk, think about the person you want to be, how you would like to feel. This gives your workout a clear purpose and you a drive to keep going. USE MUSIC TO SPUR YOU ON Music stirs up lots of powerful emotions in us. Make yourself a playlist with some of your
favourite fast and upbeat songs that make you want to dance. Playing them as your exercise will make you want to keep up with the beat. THROW THE BAD STUFF AWAY Clear out your cupboards and fill them with superfoods. If you don’t have bad stuff in your cupboards, you won’t eat it! Fat and sugar-laden foods cause our energy levels to plummet. Bin them and replace them with tasty healthy snacks that will give your body energy and nutrients to be able to cope with your new exercise regime. CHANGE UP YOUR ROUTINE If you have already attempted your new
fitness regime, you no doubt designed your own daily workout plan at the beginning. You will start to get bored of this eventually though, which will cause your motivation to wane. Remember to shake things up every so often- run a different route, change the order of your workout routine, combine different workouts – perhaps an exercise class one day, and a boxercise class another. Anything to stop you just exercising on autopilot. Breathing new life into your workouts keeps it varied, and fresh.

Stepping under a cascading shower can be one of the most luxurious feelings in the world. But turning the shower on to be greeted with a pathetic little trickle can be one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences!
I
ndeed, the power of a good shower should not be underestimated. So much more than a means of getting clean, the right one can encourage us to break into a chorus of Singin' In The Rain, awaken the senses and leave us invigorated and ready to face the demands of the day. Nearly 90% of UK households, according to AMA Research (www. amaresearch.co.uk), have at least one shower in their home, and with demand for super-stylish systems continuing to grow, leading bathroom specialists now offer an array of solutions for both traditional and contemporary interiors. "The bathroom continues to be a key element of our homes, playing a much greater role beyond that of its traditional function as just another part of the daily routine," says Robin Levien, international designer at Ideal Standard. "It has become both multi-purpose and multi-functional, an oasis of escapism and relaxation. A place for reinvigoration, transformation and even somewhere to pose, ponder and play." Dreaming of a shower upgrade? The first stage in the planning process is to address a number of key issues, such as water pressure, the fabric of the building and ceiling height. " The most important thing is to ensure you choose a shower system that's compatible with your water supply, to make sure you have sufficient water pressure to give optimal showering experience," notes Joe Stephens, product designer at Roper Rhodes. Once the practical points have been addressed, you can drench yourself in the fun bits... DARK DEPTHS Style and ambience can make a big difference in a bathroom; an
uncluttered spa style, and chic, minimal designs are ever-popular. And while lighter colour schemes may be most traditionally associated with this part of the home, don't rule out moody hues, which can work especially well. "There is a trend for using dark colours on the walls and floor, which with good lighting, can actually make a small space seem bigger, as well as delivering a boutique hotel feel," says Levien. Think different shades of greys, particularly darker tones, which are very on trend and great for creating a tranquil feel of luxury and relaxation. WET & WILD Oversized shower heads can - literally - wash our woes away and make us feel like we're in Club Tropicana. Large, 300mm shower heads, which can be ceiling-mounted for a dramatic effect, are perfect for this as they create a cascading rain shower effect. Diverter valves are very popular, as they give the ability to switch the flow of water between two or even three different outlets, such as the main overhead shower, a handset and a bath filler. Thermostatic shower valves are another popular choice, particularly for families, as they are safe and easy to use. Show-stopping ceiling-fed shower heads are a huge trend, because they look great, and they provide a really luxurious showering experience. 'Wow' shower head features, such as waterfall settings and LED mood lighting, which create a sense of total relaxation are also hot this year. THE WOW FACTOR When space is at a minimum, often it's all about finding inventive and user-friendly ways of fitting in the essentials - but those lucky enough to have lots of bathroom space to play with can tap into trends on a larger scale. Bathrooms are moving from the functional into the decadent. Colour, texture, shape and size have moved from being 'safe' to almost stretching the boundaries of good taste. There has never been so much choice and product variation, and trends are very fast moving. Giving a traditional bathroom an up-to-date facelift, you could remove the bath and replace it with a large format slim tray and wet room. This totally transforms both the look, life and function of the bathroom. Think about coloured glass, as this can offer a 'wow' factor and also delivers some privacy, if the bathroom is used by more than one person at a time.

ou just know when you’ve found ‘the one’. Supportive, and always there for you when you need comfort, a snuggle or just to relax. I’m not talking about a partner - at least, not a human one, but the sometimes more tricky matter of getting the right seating partner; a sofa. But with so much to consider, from size through to shape and colour, never mind sorting through a seemingly endless array of ranges, finding the perfect match for you and your home can be daunting. People often go to enormous lengths choosing a sofa, not just because this is a costly item, but also because it’s the most important piece of furniture in a living room. It can literally make or break the look of a setting. A lot of life happens on a sofa, so it’s worth taking time to find ‘the one’. Follow the experts’ tips for a seat-match made in heaven... GET THE MEASURE I’m a fan of sofas which are big enough to lounge around on and super comfy, with deeper seat cushions than average, so they’re inviting to curl up on. Top Tips: Measure your room before shopping, so you choose a sofa to fit the space and scale of the room. When you have one in mind, make a paper template of it and lay it out in the room to help you visualise the reality of its size, as display sofas always look smaller in large showrooms. Ensure it will fit, especially if there are awkward stairs or narrow doorways, although bolt-on arms or removable legs are solutions if space is tight. Style Guide: Leather sofas are a big trend, as they’re durable and practical and easy to clean. CHECK OUT PATTERN Don’t be afraid to be adventurous and really push the boundaries when it comes to choosing seating - it’s outdated to pick a matching sofa, armchair and footstool. Create an eclectic, customised look by mixing colours and patterns, so a sofa upholstered in a plain fabric could be paired with a leather armchair, or a patterned footstool.
