total of 739 days of voluntary work were given in 2015 this equates to 4,434 hours donated. In financial terms at a rate of £7 per hour this has saved the council £31,038. 55 people volunteered during the year including 8 people who were new to volunteering. Work is carried out in all conditions whatever the weather throughout the year. 52 tasks have been completed at 20 different sites across the district. Chigwell Row Wood and Roughtalleys Wood in North Weald were visited the most often with 7 visits each. In 2015 the Countrycare team have worked with • 6 Parish and Town Councils • Essex Wildlife Trust • Woodland Trust • Harlow District Council MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY As well as routine maintenance of the Reserves they have replaced all of the benches and repaired fencing in Roughtalleys Wood, installed new steps to make access to the site easier at Weald Common, constructed a boardwalk at Linders Field, Buckhurst Hill and constructed and installed bat boxes at Bobbingworth and bird boxes at Norton Heath. e new Community Orchard for Loughton was cleared and a variety of new trees planted by the volunteers. ey also carried out wildflower surveys at all of the Countrycare reserves. Countrycare is very appreciative of the work and effort put in by its band of volunteers in all weathers and has tried to 1 0 MARCH 2016

make the work interesting and varied throughout the year. Indeed 5 volunteers attended over 40 of our tasks in the last calendar year. A GREAT VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY Councillor Gary Waller, Cabinet member with responsibility for Countrycare said: “We’re so grateful to our Countrycare volunteers who donate their time to ensure Epping Forest’s green spaces are maintained, as well as working hard to provide habitats for an abundance of wildlife.” “Epping Forest Countrycare offers great volunteering opportunities, meeting every ursday come rain or shine, with transport arranged so anyone can join in. If you’re interested in being outdoors, keeping fit and making a difference in your community, as well as socialising with likeminded people, get in touch.” GET INVOLVED Countrycare can tackle more ambitious and challenging management work on the 9 Local Nature Reserves and other Local Wildlife Sites because of the support, experience, dedication and support of its volunteers. ‘Pupils at Braeside School’

LET’S CHAT OVER COFFEEQ&A WITH MATTHEW HAGGER

Braeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton make up the Oak-Tree Group of Schools. We talk to the Group Principal, Matthew Hagger, about the recent coffee mornings held with the current parents. Q: TELL US ABOUT THE OAK-TREE COFFEE MORNINGS. Between October and February each year there is a programme of informal Coffee Mornings for each Headmistress and me to chat with parents year group by year group at each school. ese are useful for us to discuss various aspects of our education, with no set agenda, and to listen to feedback. is is the fourth year that these Coffee Mornings have been used to inform our school development plan as we continually look to enhance the service we provide to our families. Q: WHAT DO THE PARENTS LIKE TO DISCUSS? e sessions last for around an hour, so our parents have ample opportunity to bring up anything that they would like to discuss, no matter how small or large. We can discuss anything from the development of our extra-curricular activities programme to recent enhancements to the quality of the education. Some groups focus on particular themes, such as our intensive preparation for senior schools for parents of the older Oaklands and Coopersale Hall children, or our careers advice and Sixth Form entries at Normanhurst and Braeside. Some questions will concern the school as a whole and others the class or individual. 1 2 MARCH 2016

Q: WHICH DEVELOPMENTS HAVE COME FROM COFFEE MORNING DISCUSSIONS? A few years ago a running theme in Coffee Mornings across the Group was about communication. Parents were asking for more, and for ways to make it easier for them to access our information. As a result we developed and launched a new website for each school, three interactive Apps for Android and Apple devices, text message reminders to parents and a textback service for electronic signing. We developed out Parent Portals for the sending of all reports, handbooks and documentation and have recently launched an online Parents’ Evening booking system that has proved very popular. As a result of the recent Coffee Mornings we’re adding to the Apps to link them to our Twitter feeds and Instagram accounts, and will be introducing various enhancements to the curricula throughout the Group. Q: HOW DO YOU FOLLOW-UP THE COFFEE MORNINGS? I spend time after each Coffee Morning discussing ideas for development or points for consideration with each Head and relevant members of staff, before writing to parents with a summary of our discussions and an outline of where we will be adding improvements. e Coffee Mornings are very time-consuming as I now have around 30 of them each year across the four schools. However, I feel that they are incredibly important as I get to spend valuable time with hundreds of parents each year who have excellent ideas to contribute to our provision. n

pping Forest District Museum, based in Waltham Abbey, celebrates the Epping Forest District with an emphasis on people and the environment in which they live. is is achieved through exhibitions, collections and records, education programmes and events. * New Community Room * Six New Galleries * Lifts to all floors * Gift Shop * Events & Activities * Talks, tours and behind the scenes e museum in Waltham Abbey is undergoing an exciting project to refurbish and extend the building in Sun Street. A grant of nearly £2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund is helping to pay for improved facilities. Opening Date: Saturday 19th March 2016 Time:10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Epping Forest District Museum, 39-41 Sun Street, Waltham Abbey, EN9 1EL. VOLUNTEERING AT THE MUSEUM e museum collection volunteers come from all over the district and meet twice a week to catalogue and document new objects. In 2016 volunteers will be based at the newly refurbished Epping Forest District Museum in Waltham Abbey. Volunteers are a mix of ages and interests. Some are here simply because they love history, others to learn new skills. One of the volunteers is using the sessions to gain experience to get future work in a museum. 1 4 MARCH 2016

Husband and wife volunteers Andrew and Sarah recently moved to the district and joined the group. Andrew said: “Today we’re cataloguing medals from a man who served in North Africa and Italy in the Second World War. e medals were donated by his family after his death along with other personal items. “I’m particularly interested in these items as my father served in the same area at roughly the same time. We know the man lived in Ongar, and went to eydon Bois Council mixed school where he was known as ‘the boy from the country’. I find the work fascinating – it’s like piecing together a jigsaw of someone’s life.” Elisabetta recently moved from Italy where she was a student in anthropology. She said: “e artefacts in the UK are completely different from those in Italy. I volunteered because I love old objects. e best object I’ve seen here so far is an instruction manual for the first ever fire extinguisher dating back to the early 1900s. It includes a page which describes how a prototype was demonstrated in front of the pope.” Retired teacher Carolyn was cataloguing photos and a programme from 1963 for the play ‘Murder in the Cathedral’ performed by the Loughton based Becket eatre Drama Company. She said: “I really love history. You get to see some wonderful objects and it’s really good fun!” n WANT TO VOLUNTEER? n December 2015, I made a decision to help raise £20,000 for two worthy charities – Food For Life Vrindavan in India and Haven House, Children’s Hospice in Essex. I am pleased to say that we have so far raised £16,200; and as I write this, one of my patients has made a generous pledge to donate £1,500. is makes our new total £17,700. If anyone can help raise more funds to help achieve the final target, I would appreciate being contacted personally on 07971 291180 or via email at abparmar@aol.com.

SUMMER CHARITY EVENT AT CITY PAVILION ON FRIDAY 24TH JUNE 2016 AT 6.30PM My focus is now on organizing the big event we want to host for 300 people on 24th June 2016 from 6.30pm at the Manhattan Suite at City Pavilion in Romford. is will be a very special and memorable evening with a three-course dinner (sumptuous Indian food), live entertainment, inspirational presentations by the two charities, a raffle, and an auction with some amazing items on offer. It will also be a great opportunity to network and make new friends and acquaintances. e tickets will be priced at only £35 per person (includes food and soft drinks), with tables of 12. A bar will be available on the night. If any LIFE magazine reader is interested in attending with their family or friends, please contact me as soon as possible as tickets will be selling fast.

The Cancer Research UK

Boat Races supported by BNY Mellon

First raced in 1829 and 1927 respectively, The Cancer Research UK Boat Races are amongst the oldest sporting events in the world. March 2016 will see the running of the 162nd Boat Race and 71st Women’s Boat Race, both now taking place on the Championship Course.

W

atched by thousands along the banks of the Tideway, and by millions more on TV around the world, The Cancer Research UK Boat Races are a unique sporting event. With four very strong squads of athletes, expect to see more thrilling contests once again this year. The Boat Race course, known as the Championship Course is 4 miles, 374 yards or 6.8 Km long. It stretches between Putney and Mortlake on the River Thames in South West London. This course was first used for the Boat Race in 1845 and has been used for every race since, (apart from 1846, 1856 and

Sunday 27th March 2016 3.10pm & 4.10pm

1863 when the race was held in the opposite direction between Mortlake and Putney). The Fulham/Chiswick side of the course is known as the Middlesex side. The Putney/Barnes side of the course is known as the Surrey side. The Boat Races are rowed upstream, but are timed to start on the incoming flood tide. The Boat Race is usually an hour before high tide, with the Women’s Boat Race a further hour before so that the crews are rowing with the fastest possible current. The atmosphere will be building up along the course all day and your riverside walk, lingering lunch or extended session in the pub will be crowned by a sighting of one of the capital’s great sporting events. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames to witness the action. Remember, all the riverside pubs will be heaving, with the crowds spilling out onto the towpaths. If you’re planning to watch from a pub, arrive early! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith which mean you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls. The Races are shown live on BBC1 and streamed on the BBC iPlayer. For the 2016 & 2017 Boat Races, sponsors BNY Mellon and Newton Investment Management have donated their title sponsorship to Cancer Research UK., This is a landmark move, the first of its type, which will hopefully see the awareness of CRUK’s work continue to increase over the two year initiative. BUSTLING AND BEAUTIFUL BRENTWOOD

B

WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

rentwood has certainly become a hotspot of Essex activity. Due to on-going popularity as a key area within TOWIE (e Only Way is Essex) – Brentwood epitomises the pinnacle of Essex fun whether you’re in your teens/20s or even far more mature. On 21st February 2016, William George Wathen of Winifred Dell, celebrated his 100th birthday and to honour a promise to his family. Celebrating with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even one great-great-grandchild, the day began with a trip to St. George’s Church before lunch at his favourite restaurant: e Toby Carvery, followed by a private tea party. His interesting history includes joining the army to fight in WW2 as part of a bomb disposal team before settling into Brentwood six years later in 1946. Aside the fabulous restaurants, residences and high road, Brentwood is synonymous for beautiful properties. It is therefore not surprising to learn there are two Brentwoods! e other Brentwood is situated in Los Angeles, California. e US namesake is situated near the prestigious Wilshire Boulevard, Bel-Air and Pacific Palisades! So whether TOWIE or Beverly Hills 90210 – Brentwood symbolises glamour, intrigue and party. 2 0 MARCH 2016

In addition to its close proximity to the city and a bustling town centre and industrial parks, residents also enjoy the benefits of beautiful villages, parks, farmlands. Brentwood Cathedral, the ruins of St. omas a Becket Chapel and Brentwood Museum which has famous exhibits and objects which date from 1840-1950. Of even more historical interest are the finds from Brentwood’s Metal Detectors. Members have found 3,000 year-old axe-heads dating back to the Bronze Age, coins pressed during Edward I’s reign and even relics from the Iron Age. For the younger members of the family: Hutton Country Park, orndon Country Park and the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary. Great days out and probably worth considering before summer runs out... Bentley Golf Club (Ongar Road, Brentwood CM15 9SS) is very popular and allegedly has some very challenging golf courses. Perhaps visiting the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker? Not such a secret as it’s at: Kelvedon Hall Lane, Brentwood CM14 5TL. Brentwood is truly one of Essex’s beautiful gems, a great place to live, and a fascinating town to visit with so much to offer from outdoor recreation for all the family, to cultural pursuits, shopping and dining…n

DIAMONDS AND SECRETS Thank you to everyone who has called and sent emails regarding the publication of my novel: Diamonds and Secrets. All your good wishes are very much appreciated. For those who have not seen the introduction…

T

he young woman held her baby close. e station at Oxford Circus was crowded with commuters and shoppers. e mother was oblivious to the noise; she just wanted to hear the approaching train so she could jump. e baby started to cry; the mother was mumbling nonsense. Immersed within an intense, personal conflict she was sweating profusely. e train’s headlights could be seen as it entered the station. e mother bent her knees ready to jump… she glanced down at the infant huddled at her breast, then laid it on the platform as she fell underneath the approaching train. e train screeched as the driver tried to stop but to no avail. She had been electrocuted and her limbs had been severed. As the baby screamed in its blanket, a young girl approached the infant, picked it up and cradled her.

2 2 MARCH 2016

“Do you know this child?” a woman asked her. e baby stopped crying as the young woman put her small finger in its mouth so she could suckle. e baby’s blanket was wrapped tightly around her, she was hot and flustered, trying to wriggle out. “e police will be here in a minute, you need to report this child has been abandoned. You can’t just take it.” e young woman remained silent unable to speak. She was horrified at the stranger’s insinuation that she would just go off with a strange child. e infant looked content and sleepy as she continued to suckle. Police assembled on the platform and ushered people away from the dead body and the heinous scene. e child opened her eyes as she blinkered away a stray tear, her eyes were a beautiful shade of green. e baby was warm so the stranger loosened the blanket; hidden within its fold, a snake shaped brooch with sparkling green diamond eyes...n Some of the reviews published on Amazon: “I couldn’t put this book down, read it in one sitting and loved every minute. ” "A brilliant read" “…Fantastic!” “One to get the pulses racing in more ways than one.”

he Rolling Stones will stage their first ever major exhibition at London’s prestigious Saatchi Gallery, opening to the public on 6 April 2016 until September 2016. EXHIBITIONISM will be the most comprehensive and immersive insight into a group described by critics as ‘The Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band’, taking over nine themed galleries spread across two entire floors at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery in London. Tickets for EXHIBITIONISM go on sale to the public next week on Friday 10 July 2015 at 9am via www.stonesexhibitionism.com and 10am from Saatchi Gallery. As well as over five hundred Rolling Stones important and unseen artefacts from the band’s personal archives, the exhibition will take the public through the band’s fascinating fifty year history, embracing all aspects of art & design, film, video, fashion, performance, and rare sound archives. At the heart of the exhibition is of course the Stones musical heritage that took the group from being a hard working London blues band in the early 1960’s to becoming inspirational cultural icons adored by millions. DHL is proud to be the Presenting Partner of EXHIBITIONISM – The Rolling Stones first ever global touring exhibition. Over five decades the Stones have shaped popular culture, often in their own image, and this exhibition will look back through every facet of the band’s career to offer a unique perspective that only the bands own archive can provide. EXHIBITIONISM will be the largest touring experience of this kind ever to be staged by a band or artist, and continues the proud tradition by the band of groundbreaking innovation combined with the highest production values. EXHIBITIONISM has taken three years of meticulous planning and will offer a comprehensive insight into the band in a way that has never before

been attempted. The exhibition is an interactive tour through the band’s vast artistic oeuvre, and includes original stage designs, dressing room and backstage paraphernalia; rare guitars and instruments, iconic costumes, rare audio tracks and unseen video 6 April 2016 clips; personal diaries and correspondence; original – September 20 poster and album cover artwork, and unique 16 cinematic presentations. Collaborations and work www. by the vast array of artists, designers, musicians and stonesexhibit ionism. writers will be included in the exhibition – from com Andy Warhol, Shepard Fairey, Alexander McQueen, #stonesism and Ossie Clark to Tom Stoppard and Martin Scorsese. Mick Jagger commented, “We’ve been thinking about this for quite a long time but we wanted it to be just right and on a large scale. The process has been like planning our touring concert productions and I think that right now it’s an interesting time to do it.” Keith Richards commented, “While this is about The Rolling Stones, it’s not necessarily only just about the members of the band. It’s also about all the paraphernalia and technology associated with a group like us, and it’s this, as well as the instruments that have passed through our hands over the years, that should make the exhibition really interesting.” Ronnie Wood said, “The scene was great down the King’s Road in the 1960’s. That was where you went to hang out to watch the fashions go by. So it is appropriate that our EXHIBITIONISM will be housed at the wonderful Saatchi Gallery.” Charlie Watts added - ‘’It’s hard to believe that it’s more than fifty years since we began and it is wonderful to look back to the start of our careers and bring everything up to date at this exhibition.’’

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY APPEAL BROADENS WITH LAUNCH OF TWO SPECIAL EDITIONS

L

and Rover continues to broaden the appeal of the Discovery with the launch of two new special editions – the Landmark and the Graphite*. New distinctive exterior design features to both editions enhance the design of the fourth generation Discovery, while unique interior touches to the Landmark bring more luxury and exclusivity. ese special editions give the Discovery even greater on-road presence than ever before. ey are now available to order from Lookers Land Rover retailers in Chelmsford and Bishop’s Stortford. “e appeal of the Land Rover Discovery has just got even greater. We have launched two new special editions – the Landmark and Graphite, which offer the customer greater on-road presence and enhanced comfort to complement the Discovery’s existing versatility and capability attributes,” says Finbar McFall, Jaguar Land Rover Product Marketing Director.

LANDMARK e Discovery Landmark builds on the generous specification of the HSE derivative* with new interior and exterior features that offer the customer a more premium and unique look and feel to their Discovery. e exterior upgrade sees the addition of full length roof rails in a bright finish that highlight the familiar stepped roof design of the Discovery. Distinctive black fender vents, grille and mirror caps complement silver bonnet and tailgate badges, alongside Landmark badging to the side and rear to further distinguish this model. 20-inch 5-split spoke alloy wheels complete the design. e Landmark is available in a limited range of five body colours, including Zanzibar which has been exclusively reserved for the Landmark edition and is not available on any other Discovery. e other four available body colours are Waitomo Grey, Santorini Black, Yulong White and Indus Silver. Enhancements to interior refinement come as standard inside the Landmark with the addition of Windsor Leather seats and the Extended Leather Pack throughout, furnishing the dashboard, door casings and fascia. e interior is purposefully limited to three colourways – Ebony, Almond and Tan. e latter is offered for the first time ever in a Discovery, with Tan Windsor Leather Seats complemented by Ebony door casings and fascia and a Straight Grained Walnut veneer trim finisher.

Additionally, the customer can choose from a selection of standard and optional steering wheels to complement the choice of veneer. is includes the Grand Black Lacquer or Straight Grained Walnut Wood & Leather steering wheel. GRAPHITE e Discovery Graphite builds on the success of the Black Pack and introduces a modern and distinctive look to the model range with striking finishes. A grey Graphite finish to the fender vents and grille, which also sports a gloss black and lighter grey frame, blend with existing grey highlights appointed to the door handles and the Discovery badging to the bonnet and tailgate. Exclusive to the Graphite is the 19-inch 7-split spoke alloy wheel in a high gloss dark grey as standard. e customer can choose between a spectrum of nine body colours and three interior colourways. n Price for Discovery Landmark is from £55,995. A century of British Vogue is celebrated at the National Portrait Gallery

A major exhibition celebrating 100 years of cutting-edge fashion, beauty and portrait photography by British Vogue is open at the National Portrait Gallery until 22nd May 2016.

V

ogue 100: A Century of Style showcases the remarkable range of photography that has been commissioned by British Vogue since it was founded in 1916, with over 280 prints from the Condé Nast archive and international collections being brought together for the first time to tell the story of one of the most influential fashion magazines in the world. Decade by decade, the exhibition explores British Vogue’s unfaltering position at the forefront of new fashion, its dedication to the best in design, and its influence on the UK’s wider cultural stage during some of the most inventive and exciting periods in style, taste, the arts and society. Exquisite vintage prints from the early twentieth century, ground-breaking photographs from renowned fashion shoots, unpublished work and original magazines have been brought together in this first retrospective survey of the celebrated magazine. Vogue 100: A Century of Style includes work by many of the leading twentieth-century photographers, including Cecil Beaton, Lee Miller, Irving Penn and Snowdon. More recent work by celebrated photographers David Bailey, Corinne Day, Patrick Demarchelier, Nick Knight, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, Tim Walker and Albert Watson are included, reinforcing British Vogue’s keen editorial eye and dedication to commissioning worldclass photography, as well as its role in nurturing new talent. The exhibition also includes many of the faces that have shaped the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, from Henri Matisse to Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Damien Hirst; Marlene Dietrich to Gwyneth Paltrow; Lady Diana Cooper to Lady Diana Spencer; and Fred Astaire to David Beckham. Also

featured in the exhibition are the fashion designers who defined the looks of the century, including Dior, Saint Laurent and McQueen. Highlights of the exhibition include the entire set of prints from Corinne Day’s controversial Kate Moss underwear shoot, taken in 1993 at the pinnacle of the ‘grunge’ trend; Peter Lindbergh’s famous 1990 cover shot that defined the supermodel era; a series of exceptional Second World War photographs by Vogue’s official war correspondent, Lee Miller; a rare version of Horst’s famous ‘corset’ photograph from 1939, which inspired the video for Madonna’s hit song Vogue; and vintage prints by the first professional fashion photographer, Baron de Meyer. Alexandra Shulman, Editor in Chief of British Vogue, says: ‘Vogue 100: A Century of Style is a landmark exhibition in the history of magazine photography. I am incredibly proud of this collection of exceptional photography and of the whole concept of the exhibition, which shows the breadth and depth of the work commissioned by the magazine as well as Vogue’s involvement in the creation of that work. The National Portrait Gallery is a wonderful place for this show, which mixes portraiture and contemporaneous artistic style in the same way as much of the Gallery’s own collection. Anybody interested in photography, fashion, fame and magazines will find this an unmissable experience.’ ADMISSION CHARGES Tickets with donation: Adult £19 / Concessions £17.50 Standard price: Adult £17 / Concessions £15.50

NAOMI CAMPBELL AND MICHAEL TESTINO AT BURBERRY

TEMPERLEY LONDON “Winter 2016 brings Temperley Sirens to London - inspired by pirates who preyed on the traders of the spice route and their tattoos of victories, loyalties, and loves, and mermaids who beguiled all before them with their dishevelled beauty... all this with a hint of Hendrix. “Alice Temperley MBE Tattoo inspired applique, stitch and sequin embroidery on outerwear, day and eveningwear styled with boyish bow-necked shirts, ruffle cuffs and lace trims. Capes layered over delicate dresses and fine needlecord tailoring with frogging details in soft powder blues and heady cinnamons. Ice grey military inspired coats and jackets paired with feminine, diaphanous separates. Layered, modern jacquard knitwear with fringed detailing sit alongside rich file-coupe jacquards both in stormy greys, mauves and unexpected pops of lime green. The nautical tattoo theme crescendos into fluid, exaggerated print dresses and an array of mermaid inspired cocktail and evening pieces. Raw edged layered tulle ruffles, ribbon embroidery, iridescent sequins and sheer mesh applique for understated opulence. PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND Autumn/ Winter 2016 is the first Runway Collection from Pringle of Scotland’s new Womenswear Design Director, Fran Stringer, ‘I wanted to find a way of celebrating the brand’s history and embracing its heritage, that was relevant to the way women want to dress today, so there is a sense of ease to the way the collection is worn. For me it was really important to capture something of its spirit; so the colour palette is inspired by natural wool colours and highland hues.” In keeping with Stringer’s desire to honour the brand’s heritage but apply it to a way of dressing now, ‘twinsets’ take on a modern twist with all knit dressing, creating a relaxed and easy feel to the collection. Separates are produced in tonal colours, revealing head to toe monochrome looks worn as a full knit wardrobe.

The use of materials for the collection also pays homage to the brand’s roots; traditional Scottish plaid tartan and wool in its myriad yarns including cashmere, Shetland wool, mohair, silk and cotton. Shearling is given an unusual lightweight quality by weaving strips into a knitted base, creating a feminine, yet playful feel. Natural wool colours of cream and chocolate prevail, combined with evergreen, conker and rust, offset with pops of ochre, giving the collection a sense of its native Scotland. JOSEPH Joseph’s collection definitely celebrated personal expression! Unconventional yet brilliant looks: from those amazing oversized knitted jumpers, to laced up trousers without forgetting the whole turned inside out letting the garments being seen in there rawest form. There was surely a vibe of late 80’s gliding down the catwalk! SIBLING Showcasing the ‘Give the world a little disco’ collection, which reflected singer Grace Jones. The models walked down the catwalk to Kelis’ milkshake, whilst flaunting sequins, feathers and sparkle. The key colour: PURPLE. Feel Good DENTISTRY Why do people want cosmetic dentistry? WHEN YOU HAVE A HEALTHY AND ATTRACTIVE SMILE,YOU WILL LOOK GREAT AND FEEL MORE CONFIDENT. THIS MONTH, I WILL EXPLORE WHY PEOPLE WANT TO IMPROVE THEIR SMILE.

Before

Veneers by Ash.

After

R

esearch has shown that people who smile more will be more attracted to the opposite sex, as well as be more successful in their career. Two important reasons straight away to consider having a healthy, beautiful smile! So, what stops people going to a cosmetic dentist and doing something about their smile (which they are not happy with)? ese are my top 5 reasons: 1. Embarrassment: many people are really embarrassed with their discolored, or crooked teeth. Other people have gaps or missing teeth. 2. Nervous: research shows that 3 out of 4 adults are anxious to visit the dentist. 3. How will I look? Many of my clients are worried how they will look at the end. 4. Painful treatment: Some people may have had a bad experience in the past and are worried about pain during treatment. 5. Cost: the financial investment involved to achieve straighter, whiter teeth may be a concern for some people.

At Smile Design By Ash, we overcome all the above concerns. We ensure our clients feel relaxed and confident at all times. ey never need to feel embarrassed, as we are very supportive and understanding in their dental journey with us. If someone is nervous, we have the very best ways to make them feel calm, so that they can confidently have treatment done without worrying. I use “mock ups” to show people how their smile will look before they even have any cosmetic work. is complimentary service is amazing as you can appreciate how your face will change with a new smile. We also offer interest free financing over two years to make cosmetic dentistry really affordable. n To see a portfolio of some of the lives we have changed at Smile Design By Ash, visit www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk/smile-gallery.

“

Award winner Frances Furlong Rgn Bsc hons Inp. offers a wide range of treatments for Men and Women

”

As a young child I had an injury which resulted in a large scar to my chin area, growing up I was told there wasn't much that could be done as it was on a delicate area of the face. About a year ago I started to consider having a natural lip enhancement, I went to see Frances Furlong of

Perfect Skin, whilst there I asked her about my scar as over the years I had heard about lasers helping scars. Frances discussed my treatment options and warned me not to go for lasers as my skin type is quite dark and it's possible that my skin could react negatively to laser therapy. I was advised to use the same type of filler I had in my lips to treat my scar also. As you can see I'm delighted with my natural results, my confidence has soared ' Anon, Essex

WORRIED ABOUT YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE? Why not have the doctor visit you at home?

H

igh blood pressure or hypertension is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. It is also responsible for heart failure, kidney disease, eye disease and dementia. Millions of people will have hypertension and do not even know. It rarely causes any symptoms until one suffers from one of its severe complications later on in the disease process. It is scarily known as the ‘Silent Killer’ due to the slow detrimental effects hypertension has on your body. As you are more likely to develop hypertension as you get older, the NHS offers all patients above 40 years of age a NHS Health Check in order to identify hypertension and risk factors (smoking, obesity) which lead to heart disease, stroke and many other conditions mentioned above. A simple blood pressure reading will give an idea if the blood pressure (BP) is within healthy limits. However, as BP varies throughout the day and can be influenced by stress, fever and exercise, national guidance (NICE) suggests diagnosis of hypertension should not be made by individual readings taken in clinic. If the clinic BP is more than 140/90, a diagnosis of hypertension should be confirmed by using a 24-hour Ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) device. ABPM allows doctors to accurately identify a diagnosis of hypertension and identify those who require treatment and risk factor modification. It furthermore eliminates inappropriate treatment for those patients who have abnormally high blood pressures when taken at the GP surgery, but drops when they are at home – this is known as ‘white coat hypertension’. ABPM can in addition be used to identify BP accurately for those patients already on treatment, to

4 8 MARCH 2016

ensure BP is well controlled throughout the day and night and ensure appropriate spacing of anti-hypertensive medication. Conventional ABPM has a cuff fitted on the upper arm which inflates every 30 minutes for 24 hours which can be uncomfortable for the patient. A newer machine has recently been developed which uses a ‘watch’ device which measures the BP without inflating but by detecting and analysing the patients pulse. is has been thoroughly tested and endorsed by the British Society of Hypertension and patient groups have found this much more comfortable. Home Visit Doctor’ are pleased to announce that we now have the new ‘watch’ device called the BPro watch. We have been thoroughly pleased with the tolerability of the device for our patients and feel it provides more accurate readings. If you are concerned about whether you have high blood pressure or you would like to ensure your existing hypertension treatment is appropriate, why not have one of our experienced doctors visit you at home for a comprehensive assessment. n

GIVING PEOPLE THE CONFIDENCE TO SMILE

I

n a recent survey, 40% of people stated that tooth straightening is the most attractive improvement that they could make to the appearance of their mouths. ose who have had their teeth straightened, freely admitted it was the greatest improvement they had made to their own mouths. And yet, a significant number of people still have not taken the step to straighten their teeth, even though they would like to; nearly a third (31%) of those surveyed would like to change the alignment of their teeth.1

Jason, before and after

5 0 MARCH 2016

NEVER TOO LATE Straightening one’s teeth has never been simpler or more discreet. However, many people believe it is too late to correct their tooth alignment when they reach adulthood; they believe the time to wear fixed, visible braces are the teenage years and that orthodontics may limit what you can eat, affect your speech, what instrument you play, hinder your ability to effectively clean your teeth and impinge on your life in so many other ways. None of this could be further from the truth. A discreet teeth-straightening system called Invisalign has caused something of a revolution in orthodontic terms. Invisalign clear aligners have transformed unsightly smiles and lives in the process. Unlike traditional fixed orthodontic treatments where metal or ceramic ‘brackets’ are cemented to the surface of the teeth and wires run between them, the Invisalign system works by repositioning teeth discretely, little by little, using a series of custom-made transparent plastic ‘aligners’ which are to teeth what contact lenses are to the

eyes – corrective yet imperceptible. e aligners can be removed during treatment for short periods of time to allow you to eat and drink whatever you want and maintain your normal good oral hygiene routine, ensuring that an enjoyable lifestyle can be maintained without anyone knowing that you are undergoing treatment. ETHICAL SMILE-MAKEOVER Dr Suki Shakthi of Bluebell Dental Practice commented: “I have been treating patients with Invisalign for over nine years and firmly believe that Invisalign gives patients the opportunity to have an extremely ethical smile make-over – eliminating the need for invasive crowns and veneers and delivering results that people are truly delighted with. One of the key differences between Invisalign and more traditional braces is that, in most cases, no tooth extractions are necessary. As a Platinum Elite Invisalign dentist (a status only awarded to providers who have performed a large number of Invisalign cases), my passion and belief in the treatment, coupled with the experience gained from tackling many different, and increasingly complex orthodontic problems, makes me believe it to be the ideal alternative to traditional braces”

TECHNOLOGY IS IMPROVING THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE Many patients find the first step - the initial assessment to see if they are suitable for treatment - one of the most daunting parts of any dental treatment. In order to boost patient’s confidence before they come into the practice for a face-to-face consultation and assessment, Bluebell Dental Practice has developed its own, free to download, “Invisible Dentist Scan” App. e app, which can be used without any obligation to pursue treatment, allows potential patients to submit photos via their smart phone or tablet and receive an instant, hassle-free, evaluation of their suitability for Invisalign treatment. Once in the practice another technological advance is used to smooth the treatment process. Sophisticated 3D ClinCheck® software is used as a treatment planning tool which visualises each patient’s treatment stage by stage. is allows Dr Shakthi to review and approve each treatment journey, whilst the prospective patient is able to see the 3D progression of their Invisalign treatment. e progression tracks the series of movements their teeth are predicted to take, during the course of their treatment, so they will know what to expect from each set of aligners. As soon as patients have begun treatment, they are also able to download the “My Invisalign Smile” app, which acts as a companion to support anyone undergoing Invisalign teeth straightening, and features a number of functions which make keeping track of their orthodontic treatment easier, as well as Laura, before interesting and fun. “My Invisalign Smile” captures this sense of growing anticipation by allowing users to share images and videos of their transitioning appearance with friends and family and on social media. In addition it provides regular tailored support, advice and reminders (including prompts to change their aligners every two weeks or attend their next dental appointment) and is synchronised with their individual treatment plan, so that they stay on the right track throughout their treatment.

CHANCE TO SEE FOR YOURSELF If you would like to learn more about Invisalign and how it may work for you, the team at Bluebell Dental Practice will be hosting an open day on Wednesday 6 April. Please call 020 8500 6789 where our Reception team will be happy to arrange a free consultation. “We aim to give both existing and prospective patients a comprehensive understanding of how Invisalign may work for them, as well as transparency regarding the cost of the treatment before their Invisalign journey begins. All prices quoted are the complete price of treatment from start to finish, with no hidden extras. We find that many patients value our open day events as an opportunity to investigate Invisalign at their leisure with no pressure.”

Jason Kenny and Laura Trott, Olympic Cyclists

For the past 13 years Bluebell Dental Practice has been committed to offering its patients superlative dentistry. e practice is led by Dr Suki Shakthi who qualified as a dentist over 20 years ago and has a wealth of dental experience to draw upon. “I am passionate about dentistry and am acutely aware how life-changing the treatments that we are able to offer our patients can be. One of our most popular treatments is for clear, Invisalign braces. I am very proud to say we are now one of the top Invisalign providers in the UK and the number one in West Essex. It never ceases to amaze me how so many of our patients grow in confidence during their Invisalign treatment. It is an honour to be able to make such a difference in people’s lives and help them smile with confidence.” To find out if you are suitable for Invisalign treatment or to attend the next practice open day please visit www.bluebelldp.co.uk n 1

Skin Surface Problems WITH FRANCES FURLONG ROSACEA is uncomfortable and embarrassing condition in which the face flushes and reddens is becoming more common. One of the issues with Rosacea is that it can be triggered by any type of extreme weather, hot or cold, wind or sunlight. I often discuss with my clients how they feel they are affected in certain conditions. One client describes her symptoms as 'A brisk cold day, with wind and sun is the perfect recipe for my skin to flare up'. Rosacea typically appears on the face, cheeks, nose, chin and in between the eyebrows, with reports of the person feeling like they are blushing. Whilst the technology of make up to conceal redness and even out skin tone is some comfort to female sufferers, what about the unfortunate males who can't conceal? Normally we see tiny spidery blood vessels medically referred to as telangiectasis. However there are so many more sub-types of the condition. Some will experience red/purple deep areas to the face, some have lumps or bumps, even pustular acne. Severe symptoms can result in a bulbous red nose, even the eye area can also become dry and irritated. Research also shows that certain foods and drinks can aggravate the condition, alcohol, spicy foods, cheese and yogurts. Generally all food that has a certain amount of histamine should be avoided if you have Rosacea. Certain antibiotics namely the tetracycline family can be effective, compounds similar to vitamin A, skin peels, treatment pads and creams, intense pulsed light and laser can all be helpful tools. Sun-screen and a hat is the best deterrent from avoiding flare ups in the hotter months and avoiding being out in extreme weather for long periods can also help where possible. ECZEMA According to research about 10% of the population suffers some form of eczema, with the most common type known as 'ectopic eczema'. is inflammatory skin condition can present with itching, redness and scaling. Repeated rubbing and scratching of the areas affected can result in client's suffering with hypopigmentation (white patches of skin) and also thickening of the skin which are both cosmetically undesired results. An important factor when dealing with eczema is to be aware of known allergens, patch testing where a sample of suspected irritants are applied to the body. After several days the skin response is noted and allergies are then diagnosed and avoided by the patient. It is very common for clients to carry out their own online allergy testing and whilst some are able to single out trigger products some have poor predictive value. So it's better to have this test done by a qualified dermatologist. Strong chemicals within cleaning and washing detergents are often blamed as culprits, some would say their eczema is more manageable when using less chemically laden products. e backbone of good eczema care is topical emollients which are regularly applied, in some cases a topical steroid cream can be a useful addition when symptoms have flared up. 5 2 MARCH 2016

“I NOW HAVE A SMILE THAT I AM PROUD OF AND ACTUALLY WANT PEOPLE TO NOTICE…”

N

WORDS BY DEE BROWN

ewly married Phillipa always dreamed of the perfect smile after an accident at 9 years old left her with a dark front tooth. As a professional dancer Phillipa knew how difficult it was to smile when performing and when her partner Joe proposed she knew her smile would take centre stage on her wedding day. ”I was recommended to Smile Design by Ash by ladies on the Loughton Mums Facebook page. I first looked at the website and it stood out for me. It was so professional, very informative and the contact form was easy to do. I received a personal reply within 24 hours. From the moment I stepped in for my first consultation I knew that I was going to be well looked after. e practice was beautiful and the staff were so welcoming! ey were like one big family all working together”. After a full assessment Phillipa and Ash decided a Smile Makeover would give her the dream smile for her wedding day. Phillipa required some basic dental treatment including a professional hygienist appointment. Once all the basic dental care was completed Phillipa could begin her smile transformation. is included professional teeth whitening combined with porcelain veneers. Phillipa was slightly nervous when it came to having the treatment. “Having had lots of treatment in the past and having lots of painful, scratchy injections, I was slightly nervous as I knew I was going to have quite a few. However, I honestly didn't feel a thing. At times I felt like I could quite easily fall asleep!”

“My treatment couldn’t have gone any better. Ash really cared about making sure I was happy with every decision made. e overall treatment was so much quicker than I thought it would be; only taking roughly 8 weeks from start to finish”. Phillipa tied the knot in December 2015 in the North East and couldn't have been happier. She now has the confidence to smile. “You have not only made me happy but you have made my mum happy by seeing her daughter glow and smile confidently. I’m now always happy to stand and smile in photographs with her”. “I now have a smile that I am proud of and actually want people to notice! When I used to look in the magazines of all the stars and celebrities and see their dazzling smiles I never in a million years thought that I would have one to match! Now I do and I am forever grateful”. Phillipa has been running PA dance for 5 years in Chigwell and Loughton, teaching ballet and dance classes for children as young as 18 months old up to adults. HOUSE & GARDEN HOUSE & GARDEN

Guide to the

ULTIMATE HOME IMPROVEMENT

T

ransforming your home with a bespoke pool house is a luxurious and life-enhancing choice. Designing and building a pool house is quite unlike any other building project and requires more than just finding a competent builder. Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure, the UK’s oldest established, multiaward winning pool company with more than 30 years’ experience, gives his advice on how to go about the ultimate home improvement.

SPECIALIST DESIGN

It’s important to understand that indoor pools require specialist design in three major areas: the pool chamber, the building structure and the management of the pool building environment (heating, dehumidification and ventilation). All of these specialisms should be integrated into a consolidated design from the start, to avoid disruptive, complicated and potentially costly alterations after your pool house has been built.

ACHIEVING HARMONY 5 6 MARCH 2016

90 MARCH 2016

Look for a company that has all this specialist knowledge under one roof. The safest way to achieve harmony in your

building project is to have one single company responsible for all aspects of the design and build of your dream pool house. Of course it is possible to work with individual contractors but they will require more management by you, and the success of your project depends heavily on how well they work with each other. You don’t want to get caught in the middle of a blame game and have the headache of multiple people to deal with.

THE FOUR STEPS TO SUCCESS

Bringing your dream to life has some distinct stages. At Origin Leisure we work through four key stages to create the perfect bespoke indoor pool. 1. Plan. This involves comprehensive feasibility studies and designs, from initial concepts, through to architectural drawings, and 3D CAD and colour visuals. This stage will also cover your planning applications. 2. Design. Our structural engineers and technical team work through the details of every design aspect, from specialist heating, dehumidification and ventilation design to the detail of the materials used, lighting, interior design and even energy source. From the moment the first spade hits the ground the entire construction will be project managed by the same team that you have been working with from the outset, right through to liaising with all the utilities companies on your behalf. 4. A style TO SUIT you In general – colour, textures and light are all important in creating the period bathrooms below – they all help create the right feel and atmosphere as well as choosing the right sanitary ware designs…

feet made from cast iron are true to the age, as are paint effects such as faux marbling. Washbasins are often set on a washstand and w/c’s are high-up, in iconic Victorian fashion. The colour palette is made up of forest colours such as reds, blues and greens with lots of art nouveau patterns.’

ART DECO BATHROOMS – ART DECORATIVE

GEORGIAN BATHROOMS

‘Georgian Bathrooms tend to have high ceilings and big windows with lots of light flooding in. Grand and prominent features work well, for example, eye catching freestanding baths or exposed brassware fittings in the shower, or taps. You may also want to introduce bold colours, whether it’s a painted bath, or window dressing, it’s typical of this era to include dark reds, sage greens and cloudy blues. Elegant bathroom sanitaryware works best to create an authentic look, however, if you’re feeling daring very contemporary bathrooms designs can look amazing in these spaces too. Lighting is very important, as Georgian bathrooms often have high ceilings, which can be dressed with a statement chandelier. The tiling should be kept simple, natural stone works very well, so can the new style plank porcelain tiles which replicate an original wooden floor without the worry of water damage. If it is possible, retain the original features, for example fireplaces can look great behind a freestanding bath, this is the same for a huge Georgian window as there is often a low sill height. Heating is also important, big chunky styles like Bard & Brazier Baronial towel warmers work well with the drama of the space, smaller features would be lost.’

‘As the name implies, this look is rich in decoration with influence from the far east, using dramatic colours and textures. Blacks are often used and highlighted by golds and rich jade colours with chrome plating and lots of mirrors. Tiling is often patterned with geometric shape, as travel seeps through to the design of everyday household items, such as Belle Aire, the aeroplane taps by Lefroy Brooks. The sanitaryware is often stronger in shape, with a cubism influence, but also more natural. Lighting is very important to add Hollywood-esque glamour, with reflective mirrors and crystal lighting. Freestanding baths add glamour, in polished silver, but on plinth, not ball & claw feet. Black and white chequered floors are prevelant for art deco bathrooms as are marble surfaces.

VICTORIAN BATHROOMS

‘Victorian bathrooms, like Georgian, tend to have high ceilings, but narrower and smaller windows. They also tend to have more fussy features and a more eclectic mix of design, colour and texture. Victorian bathroom floors are still very popular and we are seeing a resurgence lately with a slightly more Aztec twist, for example Domus Azulej. Textured wallpapers give a very authentic Victorian feel, which goes hand in hand with decadent sanitaryware items, with gothic or oriental feel. Roll top baths and claw

KITCHEN TRENDS WITH STAYING POWER

P

lanning a kitchen revamp? You’ll want to ensure the style you choose remains fresh for years to come. Renowned kitchen designers Urban Myth reveal their key trends for 2016 with staying power.

area is the inclusion of a ‘pocket door’. With a gentle push the sliding door hides your appliances, food prep area or washing up. With multiple choices of finishes the doors can become part of the furniture – just don’t forget that washing up!

TABLE STYLE KITCHEN ISLANDS With little or no storage underneath, the new trend for kitchen islands look a lot more like tables. Usually with space for seating on both sides they’re still at counter level to be useful for food preparation and entertaining. Perfect for large open plan areas where storage space is not a concern. A hybrid of this idea with storage to one side would be perfect for smaller kitchens.

FLEXIBLE FUNCTIONALITY With an increase in open plan living the kitchen has to be more than just a place you prepare food. Now it’s your home office, your entertainment space and your children’s playroom. is style needs to maximise storage, ensure adequate docking stations for your tech and create a comfortable environment in which to relax. e key to making this work is to cleverly integrate these functions into a stylish and efficient aesthetic.

GREY IS THE NEW WHITE White kitchens will always be popular, but grey is hot on its glossy heels. With so many tonal shades to choose from it can suit any style of kitchen. Add depth with Anthracite or create warmth with softer hues. It also looks great with white!

MIXED MATERIALS Torn between the choice of a wood effect door front or a lacquered finish? Is a granite surface better than wood? Well, why not have both? Mixing the materials used in the kitchen adds interest and texture. Certain materials will add depth and warmth to your room and reflective finishes will bounce light and create a feeling of space. n

HIDDEN KITCHENS Of course you don’t want to hide your kitchen if it’s brand new. is trend is about cleverly concealing the bits that you don’t want people to see. One of the biggest trends in this 6 2 MARCH 2016

EPPING “We had been looking for something rather special and, in particular, a barn. So when we came to view this property we knew immediately that this was what we had been searching for and this was where we wanted to live. The moment we stepped inside we just fell in love with what was to become our home. It had a welcoming atmosphere and we were overwhelmed with its character and charm, it certainly had the WOW factor for us. We really get the best of both worlds here – a sense of living in a hamlet, yet we are only 1.6 miles from Epping Station and the bustling High Street is only 1 mile away.”

PROPERTY LIFE

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Forming part of the Essex golden triangle, along with neighbouring Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill, Loughton enjoys its prestigious status of being one of the most sought-after areas in Essex to live.

S Left: York Hill, Loughton, IG10, Centre: Pond Field End, Loughton, IG10. rough Foxtons Loughton, 020 3829 1400 8 2 MARCH 2016

urrounded by Epping Forest with its 6,000 acres of rural land and the vibrant High Street with its variety of independent boutiques and restaurants, the area offers a fine balance of urban and country living. It’s little wonder that, according to Land Registry, property prices in the area increased by almost 14% in the last year alone. According to Natalie Mills, sales manager of the recently opened local Foxtons branch, Loughton really is a great place to call home. “People who come to Loughton tend to stay,” says Natalie. “e area is very attractive for buyers – we registered almost 300 buyers just in the first week of our office opening. Families from nearby Walthamstow, Stratford and even Islington who are looking to upsize are interested in the area, as well as couples planning to start a family. Loughton has fantastic transport links into London – the Central line will take you to Liverpool Street in under half an hour, and a journey to Canary Wharf will take you just over 40 minutes, which makes the area very attractive for those working in central London and the City.” With a good mix of both private and state schools in the area, and majority of state schools rated by Ofsted as

Good or Outstanding, it’s difficult to imagine a better place for families to live. “e property portfolio in Loughton consists mainly of freehold houses, with a good mix of three to five bedroom Victorian, Edwardian, and 1950s style country homes”, Natalie continues. “ere is a strong sense of community here, a real village feel, which makes it a great place to both live and visit. With a strong buyer base since launching as well as from our neighbouring offices, these properties won’t stay on the market for long!” Looking for a new home in Loughton or thinking of selling? Take advantage of Foxtons 0% commissions offer, providing local residents with the opportunity to sell their property for free, or get free property management for a year. Offer ends on 15th April, terms apply. n
