BE YOUR OWN BOSS
G
raham Doubtfire, Tax Planning Director at Scrutton Bland explains what you need to know about becoming self-employed.
If you’ve just come home from a horrendous commute, the temptation to leave all that stress behind and set up your own business can be pretty strong. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that more and more people are leaving traditional employment in search of a better work and life balance; the number of self-employed people increased by 133,000 to 4.77 million between September and November 2016. Furthermore, a survey of 2,305 adults by the Scottish Widows’ Centre for the Modern Family found that 53% of self-employed workers who left their traditional jobs did so because they wanted more control and freedom over their working life. INCREASED STRESS Although more people are choosing to become self-employed, at least one in five households face increased financial stress; 19% of those surveyed with a self-employed relative claimed that their family member has experienced more financial concerns since becoming their own boss. WHAT YOU CAN DO ere are some simple things to help reduce your financial stress when running your own business: • Register your business with HMRC. is should be your top priority. You can register online or over the phone, and will need your National Insurance number, home and business details. • Make payments on time. If you miss a deadline on your tax returns you’ll be penalised, and you will also need to make Class 2 National Insurance Contributions on time.
8
MARCH 2017
• Keep records. Hold on to receipts, invoices and bank statements. Even better, invest in a reputable online accounting system (such as Scrutton Bland’s SBLive) which will help you manage your payments and cash flow. • Understand the employment rules. Being self-employed means that you are responsible for hiring (and firing), and there are now requirements such as auto-enrolment which require you to provide your employees with access to a pension scheme. • Secure financial backing. ere are plenty of costs you will incur, so think about funding from family or friends, grants from charities and trusts, or bank loans. Your accountant can help to direct you to the best solution. • Get support. ere are numerous sources of support for self-employed people, from local networking groups to government schemes. A trusted accountant, such as those at Scrutton Bland, will be able to help you through the legislation requirements for things like tax, insurance and accounts, and will save you time and money by dealing with your queries quickly and efficiently. Scrutton Bland’s financial advisers provide independent advice and can guide you through the various options to find the best solution to fit your individual circumstances. n

S
pring is finally springing up all around us and in the ancient woodland of Epping Forest, nature is rousing from its winter slumber. As daylight extend each day and the clocks go forward once again, there is a natural tendency to get outdoors and connect with the countryside around us. Epping Forest is the perfect place to find this connection, with plenty to look out for. Spot some catkins, little clusters that hang from the bare branches of Forest trees and shrubs in spring. Witness the ‘Mad March hares’ as they box as part of a courtship ritual. Copped Hall Park is a great place to see this extraordinary display. Look out for the reptiles basking in the spring sunshine, recently emerged from hibernation. Take care not to disturb them however, adders have a venomous bite. Rise early and experience a dawn chorus – you will be wowed by the explosion of birdsong in the woods. Listen out for the ‘drumming’ of woodpeckers who announce their presence with ‘drum rolls’, pounding their beaks on hollow trunks and branches which amplify the sound. e theme of ‘new life’ is celebrated in Epping Forest with an ‘Extraordinary Eggs’ Season at e View, Epping Forest’s Visitor Centre on Rangers Road, Chingford, E4 7QH. 1 0 MARCH 2017
ere will be a display of 62 traditionally decorated eggs from Romania, on loan from the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill, London, as part of its Object in Focus loan programme. Decorated eggs are part of vibrant traditions across much of Europe. e exhibition will take place from 25 March to 25 June at e View, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm. On 30 March, you can discover more about Romania’s beautiful and vibrant decorated egg tradition with a talk at 7pm at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge (Rangers Road, E4 7QH) - a free event, including a celebratory glass of Romanian wine (over 18s only). After the talk, join in with an art workshop at 8.15 at e View. Create Easter eggs inspired by traditional European wax-resist designs. Two blown eggs and all materials are supplied. £15 per person. If you would like to enjoy a guided walk through Epping Forest, there is a 6.6 mile walk meeting at eydon Bois Station on Sunday 5 March, 9am – 12.30pm. £3 per person. ere is also a deer walk on Sunday 12 March, 9.30am – 1.30pm. Meet at Lodge Road car park. £5 per person. n © Eggs - Horniman Museum

COUNCIL TAX FROZEN FOR 7TH YEAR
G
ood financial planning over many years is being credited with keeping Epping Forest District Council’s share of the Council Tax down for a record 7th year.
KEEPING COUNCIL TAX FROZEN e average payment of a Band D property to the District Council is set to remain at £148.77 until at least April 2018. Rents for Council House tenants are also set to come down by 1% in line with national guidelines. e District has not increased its share of Council Tax since 2010.
PROTECTING SERVICES Finance Portfolio Holder Gagan Mohindra presented the 2017/18 budget to Cabinet on ursday 2 February. Confirmation of the nil-increase is expected to follow at Full Council on 21 February 2017. Epping Forest District Council has successfully managed to maintain low taxes and the protection of frontline services against a background of long term reductions in central government funding and public sector service cuts elsewhere. Councillor Mohindra said: ”is hasn’t been achieved overnight. Even before the financial crisis of 2008, Epping Forest District Council was setting out our stall as an efficient low-tax council. As central government funding has reduced year on year, we set our sights on becoming financially independent.” REMAINING AS EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE e Council has managed the process through a combination of reduced costs and increased income. Councillor Mohindra said: ”Over the years we have cut our costs dramatically. Our Revenue budget not many years ago was over £18million. at has been reduced to a little over £13million for next year.” 1 2 MARCH 2017
”We have adapted and moved with the times. We have changed the way we work, making better use of technology wherever possible, changing our structures and streamlining our services to ensure we remain as lean and efficient as possible. at process is ongoing. We are now embarking on a more intensive transformation which may see much more use of flexible and home working, reductions in office space and more productivity.” WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP He continued: ”We have also embraced private sector partnerships wherever we believed it could deliver better services. Next month Places for People takes on the management of our Sports and Leisure Centres. We already had a good track record with our previous provider. is new contract will see not only reductions in the cost to the council but will also potentially see the development of a brand new leisure centre in Waltham Abbey and improvements to other facilities. is is against a backdrop of other councils cutting back and closing down their leisure offering.” ”And while our costs are coming down, we are increasing our income.
Chris Whitbread and Gagan Mohindra at Oakwood Hill Depot ©Epping Forest District Council.
Epping Forest District Council is one of the biggest land owners in our area. Our portfolio of shops, industrial estates, commercial units, car parks and North Weald Airfield brings in a significant rental income. is money is ploughed back into providing local services. at income is set to be boosted by as much as £2.7million per annum when Epping Forest Shopping Park opens later this year.” BUCKING THE TREND Councillor Chris Whitbread, Leader of Epping Forest District Council congratulated Cllr Gagan Mohindra and thanked the finance team for their hard work on another strong budget. n

LOVE LOCAL Normanhurst Early Years pupils
TELL US ABOUT BRAESIDE AND NORMANHURST SCHOOL Q & A with Claire Osborn
B
raeside School in Buckhurst Hill and Normanhurst School in North Chingford make up half of e Oak-Tree Group of Schools alongside Coopersale Hall in Epping and Oaklands in Loughton. Already Headmistress at Normanhurst, Claire Osborn was appointed as Headmistress of both Normanhurst and Braeside in September last year. We talk to Claire about her role and the two schools are now working together. Q: Tell us what is special about Braeside and Normanhurst. A: Braeside and Normanhurst are two schools that share a similar ethos. ey both have community at their heart and aim to nurture and develop individuals academically and in their personal development. We are committed to providing an exciting, personalised and inspiring educational experience for pupils of all ages from 2½ to 16. It is very special to have two schools able to collaborate together for the benefit of the pupils. e curriculum and planning is shared across the schools. Staff are able to work together to develop the learning and to enhance the pupils’ opportunities. Pupils are benefitting from a broader range of educational opportunities from overseas trips to workshops, shared GCSEs and curriculum enhancement days. is is a real positive for pupils at both schools. Q: What are the advantages of the schools sharing a Headmistress? A: I have been the Headmistress at Normanhurst for nearly seven years. In that time the school has grown and its achievements and reputation are well recognised in the area. It is a happy, purposeful and aspirational community in which pupils achieve very well. e ethos we have built there is one that has benefitted pupils considerably and I am delighted to have the opportunity to share that with Braeside. In sharing a headmistress the two schools are effectively sharing the same aims and vision. Our sense of purpose is united. I see great value in working in partnership because I see this enhancing the outcomes for our pupils. Some teaching staff are now shared and we have already begun to offer joint GCSE courses. We have been able to offer joint residential trips including a ski trip to the Alps and a trip to Seville in the autumn. We are running joint revision days and curriculum enrichment events like a recent Stone Age day and a writer in residence in March. is is all creating more opportunities for pupils and enhancing their personal development. 1 4 MARCH 2017
Performing Arts and Braeside School
Q: With two schools across 3 sites, you must be very busy! How do you fit it all in? A: I am frequently asked that question! With the two school only five minutes apart it is very easy to move between the sites and I spend time every day at both schools. Each school individually is small: 165 at Braeside, 290 at Normanhurst. I take assemblies on all three sites every week, meet all prospective parents, spend time with pupils both individually and in groups and meet regularly with current parents. I fit it all in by being organised, prioritising and being able to delegate to the excellent leadership teams in the schools. My diary is certainly full and it is a busy job, but it is a job I very much enjoy and am deeply committed to. I think we have the opportunity to create something very exciting as Normanhurst and Braeside build a future together within the Oak-Tree Group. n

HOSPITALITY, HUNGARY, HORWATH AND BUDDHA WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
M
y motto is Carpe Diem – Seize the Moment. When a client invited me to attend the Horwath HTL HOTCO Investment Conference in Budapest, it was a mere nanosecond’s contemplation before I enthusiastically agreed and was throwing bags and shoes into a suitcase. Flying out within a few days, I went from the damp Essex weather to the icy and snowy climes of Budapest; it was freezing but inside the Kempinski Corvinus, it was luxuriant and the hospitality was warm. e event’s participants included 70 speakers and 350 delegates from 35 countries. Executives from all hospitality sectors were present with focus on opportunities within the region plus discussion regarding Budapest’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics. e keynote speaker was Chairman Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor as his group (Al Habtoor) is a significant investor in the region. He owns the InterContinental Budapest, the Ritz-Carlton Budapest and two office buildings. He spoke positively and persuasively about Hungary and commented: “e return on investment is more lucrative in Hungary than other parts of Europe.” His presence certainly elevated the conference and aside his extreme wealth and position, he was humble and approachable. Marius Gomola, Managing Director of Horwath HTL, Hungary and the conference organizer stated, “We were honoured to have the Chairman speak at our event. His positive words about market conditions in Hungary, as well as his investments, only serve to emphasize the recovery in the region and will give other investors the comfort to follow his lead.” On the second day, five speakers from the guest nation Israel spoke about their domestic hospitality, technology and why Israeli hoteliers are also investing in central Europe. is event was extremely well attended and their presentation included an informative and sometimes light-hearted video

Israel invented the USB stick, the PILLCAM2 (a small camera which can be swallowed and facilitates images from inside the body) and the technology for WHATSAPP, MESSENGER and hands-free computers. Amusing facts included that according to Travellers’ Digest, Tel Aviv is in the top 10 for the world’s most beautiful men and women. Budapest is a wonderful city with a rich culture, architecture and history. Yet despite my inclination to just potter about and sightsee whist taking a brief time-out from the conference, I noticed from the local map, that the famous Gerbeaud coffee house (Gerbeaud.hu) was just around the corner. As a chronic consumer of cakes I had to sample; the delicacies at Gerbeaud are probably the world’s finest. Past patrons have included Empress Elizabeth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Franz Liszt, Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II, Madonna and Brad Pitt. Culture and culinary appetite was truly satisfied but there was one more cuisine temptation before my return to Heathrow: Buddha-Bar Budapest. For those who have ever frequented the restaurants (or even the hotels in Budapest and Prague), this was a sumptuous treat and experience that had to be savoured. In the presence of a large golden Buddha, my colleagues and I sat comfortably around a large round table and dined in an atmosphere of absolute elegance and unrivalled style. (Particularly recommend the chicken salad). en the slow, slippery walk along the snowy back streets to Kempinski and to reluctantly pack my bags for the following day’s flight. What a trip. What an experience. Absolutely recommend Budapest. n

Blissfully, the Sani Resort in Greece has it all figured out. A chill-out lounge allows teens to relax with friends made during dance, football or sailing classes, while the new Sani Dunes Adventurer programme gives them a chance to take advantage of their newfound
independence. Here, they’re encouraged to trade their digital screens for exhilarating sports and to interact with the natural environment. Parents can relax on the white sand beach while their youngsters take to the water in paddleboats where they’ll have the opportunity to snorkel and dive, participating in ecological research. The outdoors meets tech on a mountain biking adventure through the forests and wetlands of Sani Reserve, where guides teach the group to identify native bird species and turn their calls into mobile phone ringtones.

EXQUISITE AND HISTORIC THEYDON BOIS
A
s summer approaches, there are so many areas for potential day trips, walks and for relaxation. Or perhaps some shopping or a tasty meal at a popular restaurant. We are certainly spoiled for choice in our multitude of areas: Whether Epping Forest, Loughton and in South Woodford’s High Road, Chigwell’s Brook Parade or at the many scenic and pretty villages that surround Brentwood. An exceptional area is eydon Bois; it is pretty, has its own exquisite charm and easily accessible from most of the areas covered by this magazine. A large residential village and civil parish in the Epping Forest district; a short drive from Epping (1.4 miles) and Loughton (less than 1 mile) access is a quick journey that gives enough distance from home but without being too far that it merits much thought or preparation. e drive is very pretty in the summer and a scenic ride in the winter, especially if the forest and lanes are covered with snow but hopefully, we’ve seen the last of that for now and can look forward to some spring scenery, flowers and fresh blossoms. Apparently the origin of the name is from the family of Bois which owned the manor in the 12th and 13th 2 2 MARCH 2017
centuries. As for the correct pronunciation… it’s ‘boys’ – not the French bois meaning trees. Although ironically given the name because of the village’s close proximity to the forest. eydon Bois is a very practical village and its shops offer all services and facilities needed for local residents. eydon Bois is usually a finalist in the RCCE Best Kept Village awards and is proud to be the winner of Best Kept Essex Village in both 2004 and 2007. A few good local pubs and restaurants offering elegant cuisine are also featured in the village. So whether for a sumptuous meal or just a swift half down the local, everybody’s preference is accommodated. e high street has the familiar Tesco and there are other practicalities such as a bank, post office and pharmacy. e only downfall is the lack of street lights at night. It can be very dark but the eydon Bois’ites have continuously voted against any installation as they feel it would destroy the ambience and could incur an increase in council tax. n eydon Bois – A pretty village that is both relaxing and a joy to visit …

MOTHER’S DAY -
Sunday, 26th March 2017 WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” ELIZABETH STONE
A
ll mothers look forward to Mother’s Day. Although most children show their appreciation throughout the year, Mothering Sunday (Mother’s Day) formalises the unbreakable bond in an international and united act of celebration. From child to adult, each relationship with a mother is special and the positive energy that ignites the home with love, comfort and security. So where do you begin to say ‘ank You’ to somebody who has given so much in the name of motherhood and unconditional love. Probably the first step is some serious pampering…. Breakfast in bed. Mothers are normally the first one up in the morning, orchestrating the day’s events; thinking ahead for everybody else’s needs and keeping the wheels of the home machine, well-oiled, functional and efficient! On this special day, allow the mother to STOP Brekky in bed! Consider the technicalities necessary: croissants, jam, hot tea preferably in china cup, napkin and with a little thought and preparation, a small flower in a vase. Most supermarkets are open late, so if the task feels daunting the night before, help and supplies, are always available. ere is a lot to be said for ‘the thought’ but deliverance – is even better.
“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.” 2 4 MARCH 2017
ere’s no better sound, (whilst you’re curled up in bed, warm, snug and very cosy) then the clink-clink promise of breakfast on a tray. Slow, careful footsteps, coming up the stairs, the slight rattle of a china teacup on the saucer. A pregnant pause outside the bedroom as tray is strategically balanced before that all important knuckles-double-knock. Time to sit up comfortably… e whiff of cooked eggs and hot toast is now in close proximity… Breakfast is served and hopefully with a smile and present too! n
“The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” HONORE DE BALZAC

LORD'S The Home of Cricket
C
Lord's has long been seen as the game's spiritual 'headquarters'. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket.

ts owner, Marylebone Cricket Club, remains the guardian of both the Laws and the Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides (which play around 500 games a year) perform a key role in promoting cricket - in Britain and elsewhere. In addition, Lord's is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), as well as the European Cricket Council (ECC). It is also the setting for the state-of-the-art MCC Cricket Academy, the unrivalled MCC Library and the worldfamous MCC Museum. Above all, Lord's is the setting for some of the best cricket in the world .It hosts Investec Test matches and NatWest-sponsored one-day internationals plus most of Middlesex's home games, some historic fixtures (such as Oxford v Cambridge) and the village and club finals. The Lord’s 2017 fixture list is available to view on their website www.lords.org/fixtures/ fixturesand-tickets. There is a Tour of Lord's where you will begin in the MCC Museum, home of the famous Ashes urn. The museum brings the fascinating story of cricket
is to life. Paintings, photographs and artefacts, covering 400 years of cricket history, reveal the game's development from a rural pastime to a modern, increasingly international sport. The museum also boasts bats, balls and kit donated by great players like Mahela Jayawardene, Glenn McGrath, Rahul Dravid, Paul Collingwood and Shane Warne - as well as from past greats such as Victor Trumper, Jack Hobbs and Don Bradman. Additional attractions at Lord's include the Tennis Court where Real Tennis, 'the game of kings' (famously enjoyed by King Henry VIII), is still played, and the MCC Cricket Academy - where many future Test and county stars hone their skills. Founded in the 1970s, it soon produced some of the world's finest cricketers, including Sir Ian Botham, Martin Crowe and Angus Fraser. Regular users include Middlesex players, MCC's Young Cricketers and international cricketers preparing to appear in major matches at Lord's. Members of the public are welcome too. Facilities include a 19-yard run-up for bowlers, a variable speed bowling machine for batsmen, two-way simultaneous video recording equipment, a Supergrasse playing surface - especially for cricket, a bar & coffee shop for spectators (for tired players!) with coaching available throughout the year. Lord's is also an ideal venue for meetings or conferences, exhibitions, wedding receptions, dinners, parties or any celebration. From the Victorian elegance of the Pavilion to the striking lines of the J.P. Morgan Media Centre, Lord's offers a wide range of facilities that allow for flexibility and creativity. Silent Pool Gin "" $$
F
ounded in the Spring of 2014, Silent Pool Distillers was set up with the vision of creating hand-crafted, premium spirits. Their multi-award winning Silent Pool Gin is produced in small batches using a custom made still which is heated by steam from a reclaimed English boiler that’s fired on local hardwood. Even the bottling is done on site. It is all very labour intensive, but well worth the effort to create a delicate, complex and internationally acclaimed gin that is rolling out across the UK, Europe, USA and soon Japan. Silent Pool Distillers coined the phrase ‘intricately realised‘ to embody their core values – to be an artisan producer of high quality spirits. This philosophy is evident from the beautiful teal and copper filigree bottle design to the refreshingly individual gin inside and it’s the thread that runs through the crafting not only of Silent Pool Gin, but all their products including: Navy-Strength and English Rose Gin, strawberry and blackberry seasonal gin cordials, English rye vodka and eau de vies as well as an innovative new range of Silent Pool Mist Liquid Garnishes.
It is exciting times for the company that has been bowled over by the meteoric rise in orders for its products, both domestically (Silent Pool Gin is now available in Waitrose, Majestic, M&S, Wine Rack and other fine retailers nationwide) and abroad. In order to meet rapidly growing demand, Silent Pool Distillers are expanding their current distillery, converting two adjacent barns into a home for their new 1,800 litre bespoke copper still. Nestled on the banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, in the beautiful Surrey Hills, the distillery is open to visitors 7 days a week, Monday-Saturday 9:30-17:00, Sundays & Bank holidays 10:00 – 15:00. You can even immerse yourself into the world of Silent Pool Gin with a 90 minute deep dive distillery tour, covering all aspects of production including product sampling. Admission is ÂŁ15pp including a ÂŁ5 voucher and prebooking is essential. Or if you have a private party, special event or are part of a club whose members are gin lovers or just plain gin curious, why not consider booking a Silent Pool Gin ‘At Your Event’ Experience. Tell us your preferred venue, time and place and we’ll send along a trained Silent Pool Distillery professional who will detail our artisanal story including: the legend of the mythical Silent Pool from which we draw our water, how we make our multi-award winning gin from botanicals to bottle and how best to serve it. You will also partake in a tutored tasting of our spirits. There will also be an opportunity to buy from our product range. Prices start from ÂŁ100 plus travel expenses for a 90-minute session. For more information or to book a bespoke ‘At Your Event’ Gin Experience, email: stevemarkwell@silentpooldistillers.com. If you like the sound of all of that, make your way online to the Silent Pool Distillers’ website where you will be able to buy our award-winning products, book one of our 90-minute Distillery Tours and learn more about this artisanal spirit company and its range of products and services.

“HAPPY CABBY” WORDS BY JENNIFER SPENCER
L
ondon black cabby turned TV presenter Mason McQueen, left a ‘happy chappy’ after his treatment at Smile Design by Ash.
“They say your eyes are the window to your soul, so if that is so, then your mouth is your front door”
At the age of 48, Mason’s main goal was to be free of lingering dental problems, and have a great long lasting smile. So that is what we gave him! “It is going to be a long journey Mason, but we will get you there.” Mason’s previous journey on television is definitely something to mention. Firstly on ‘Toughest Place To Be A Taxi Driver’, where Mason’s TV career began. To follow was ‘Cabby Abroad’, and then onto ‘Terry & Mason’s Great Food Trip’ starring the great, and sadly missed Sir Terry Wogan. After a dental implant placement and some general restorative work, Mason’s treatment was finally complete. “Exceptional practice.” Ash has a great team around him, always friendly, I felt so comfortable and relaxed.” Mason has been such a pleasure to treat throughout his journey with us. He said to me, “ey say your eyes are the window to your soul, so if that is so, then your mouth is your front door”. en with a huge cheeky grin he said, “Now I can say mine is also welcoming and inviting.” “I am finally happy with the end result.” Each smile we create is selectively and uniquely designed for each and every person we treat. “Ash is a perfectionist, and I admire his encouragement and passion to create beautiful smiles. We need more of him in the world.” IF YOU FEEL YOU WANT TO EXPLORE THE DIFFERENT TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU TO IMPROVE YOUR SMILE,THEN PLEASE CALL US NOW ON 020 81082469 FOR A FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION. n

BE IN MODE AND SUPPORT ST CLARE HOSPICE
S
omething very special is happening at MODE beauty therapy in Loughton and we want to share our plans with you. MODE is taking up the £50 Challenge set by St Clare Hospice in Hastingwood which provides free, compassionate care and support to adults with life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers, benefitting thousands of people across West Essex. e £50 Challenge is a charity fundraising initiative that encourages businesses to grow a £50 investment over a three-month period starting on Monday 3rd April and running until 30th June. MODE is bidding to become the best local business by raising the most money and YOU can help! Every time you visit MODE during the challenge you can • make a donation on top of your bill which will be added to the Challenge Fund • guess how many testers are in the jar • buy tickets for a raffle • cake sale • themed fancy dress day • flip flops after having a pedicure • some of the girls will be going to a local retirement home to do manicures on the residents plus a raffle Karen Montagnino, who started MODE 24 years ago said “At MODE we are like a family and have been keen charity supporters over the years. We are pleased to support St Clare Hospice because we know the great work that goes on there. We all know someone who has received their specialist care and just how important that support is for families.” e services provided by St Clare Hospice are free of charge to those who need their care, however it costs over £4million a year to run. With limited NHS funding it means the Hospice needs to fundraise to find the majority of this amount each year through donations and other voluntary sources.
4 6 MARCH 2017
is is where the £50 Challenge comes in as it is hoped to raise significant income from local companies who put their money-making skills to the test by signing up for the popular fundraising investment initiative. St Clare Hospice’s Corporate Partnerships Manager, Amy Jacobs, who is co-ordinating the 12-week challenge said “We are delighted that MODE has chosen to participate in St Clare’s £50 Challenge. As a local health and beauty business, it is fantastic to see their passion and commitment for their local Hospice. Everyone at St Clare looks forward to working closely with MODE and seeing their results. We hope MODE’s participation encourages other high street businesses in Loughton to test their entrepreneurial skills as the £50 Challenge is open to all – big or small.” Other businesses can sign up too just contact Amy on amy.jacobs@stclarehospice.org.uk
AND DON’T FORGET MOTHER’S DAY What better way to say I Love You Mum than to give her a voucher for MODE where she can enjoy the delights of a range of treatments and products. ere’s no better way to let Mum know that she is cherished and she will love the choices on offer. n

SKIN DEEP ISSUES WITH FRANCES FURLONG
PART 1 - SCARS
P
eople with skin problems are at high risk of developing psychological problems and they can linger even after the skin gets better. Skin disorders rarely kill people, but they have a huge impact on all aspects of an individual's life. Major depression can occur as a result of chronic skin conditions, with suicidal thoughts as another consequence. Skin problems that affect our faces or visible scars are often more problematic, whilst some would argue that trying to improve your appearance, skin disorder or scarring is vain. You need to take into account that body image accounts for one quarter to a third of a person's self esteem, and self esteem is a major influence on overall psychological health. erefore ones appearance has a huge impact on psychogical health. ree part series on skin issues Part 1. Scars, Part 2. Rosacea and Part 3 Acne. SCARS A scar is a mark that is left on the skin after a wound or an injury to the surface of the skin has healed. ey are very common and most people have at least one on their body and are part of the natural healing process. HOW DO SCARS FORM? When the skin is wounded and there is a break in the body’s tissues, the body produces more of a protein called collagen, as part of the healing process. Collagen builds up where the tissue has been damaged, helping to heal and strengthen the wound. For a period of about three months or longer, new collagen continues to form and blood supply increases, causing the scar to become raised, lumpy and red. Some collagen then breaks down at the site of the wound, the blood supply reduces and the scar gradually becomes smoother, softer and paler.
TYPES OF SCARS AND POSSIBLE TREATMENTS 1 Flat, pale scars - these are the most common type of scar and are due to the body's natural healing process. Initially, they may be red or dark and raised after the wound has healed, but will become paler and flatter naturally over time. is can take up to two years. Some laser and Intense Pulsed Light treatments can help reduce the redness and improve the healing. 2 Hypertrophic scars - red, raised scars that form along a wound and can remain this way for a number of years. Again laser, Intense Pulsed Light, derma pen treatments can help lessen the appearance, keeping the scar moist also helps.
4 8 MARCH 2017
3 Keloid scars - these are caused by an excess of scar tissue produced at the site of the wound, where the scar grows beyond the boundaries of the original wound, even after it has healed. Derma pen treatments can really help, also keloid scar gels available on prescription. 4 Pitted (atrophic or "ice-pick") scars - these have a sunken appearance. Good results with dermal filler, derma pen, chemical peeling and certain types of lasers. 5 Contracture scars - these are caused by the skin shrinking and tightening, usually after a burn, which can restrict movement. Specialist gel bandages and in recent years hydrating dermal filler droplets to soften the skin can really help.
Photo A scarring following traumatic injury as a child, scar is 12 years old and causes psychological distress to the client
Photo B a single treatment of dermal filler has been administered, client also using daily vitamin C as a natural skin lighter to help discolouration to skin tone.

ARE YOU CONSCIOUS OF SMILING?
R
esearch has shown that people who smile will be more attracted to the opposite sex, as well as be more successful in their career. Two important reasons straight away to consider having a healthy, beautiful smile! So, what stops people going to a cosmetic dentist and doing something about their smile (which they are not happy with)? ese are my top 5 reasons: 1. Embarrassment: many people are embarrassed with their discolored, or crooked teeth. Other people have gaps or missing teeth. 2. Nervous: research shows that 3 out of 4 adults are anxious of visiting the dentist. 3. How will I look? Many people worry about how they will look at the end of the process. 4. Painful treatment: Some people may have had a bad experience in the past and are concerned about painful treatment. 5. Cost: the financial investment involved achieving straight, whiter teeth may be a concern for some people. At Smile Design By Ash, we help BEFORE TREATMENT with all the above. We ensure our patients feel relaxed and in control at all times. ey never need to feel embarrassed, as we are very supportive and understanding about their dental journey with us. If someone is nervous, we have the best ways to make them feel calm, so that they can confidently have treatment done, without worrying.
AFTER TREATMENT
We also use “mock ups” to show people how their smile will look before they have any cosmetic work. is complimentary service is amazing as you can appreciate how your face will change with a new smile. We also offer interest free financing over two years to make cosmetic dentistry affordable. n

As a professional beauty therapist, looking good is important. After losing four stone in weight I found that my face looked somewhat gaunt, tired and dull. I was introduced to Frances in 2013 at De Ja Vu in Chingford. At my consultation I voiced my concerns and Frances devised a treatment plan accordingly which included volumising fillers, lip enhancement and muscle relaxing injections. Looking healthy and natural is of the utmost importance to me and Frances has exceeded my expectations. I am absolutely thrilled with the results, thank you so much Frances for always making me feel and look great! A.G. London

An Athlete struggling with a Python, an important and striking bronze statue by Frederic Leighton, is one of the leading pieces to be offered in Bonhams inaugural Important Design Sale in London on Wednesday 5 April. It is estimated at £50,000-£80,000.
T
his very rare piece by the pioneer of the late 19th century British sculpture movement known as New Sculpture, is a bronze reduction of the full scale work dated 1877 and now in Tate Britain in London. It was considered at the time to mark a renaissance in British sculpture. Smaller versions of well-known sculptures were often commissioned by wealthy patrons as status symbols but, in the words of the Head of Bonhams Works of Art and Sculpture, Michael Lake, “This is an extremely rare reduction. In all my years of looking at Leighton’s works I have never seen another.” The sculpture was acquired at a Country House auction in 1934 for fifty-seven shillings and 17pence (just under £3 in today’s currency) and has been in the possession of a family in Cheshire ever since.
OTHER PIECES IN THE SALE INCLUDE The Starfish Dancer, one of the most sought-after bronze statues by the renowned Art Deco master sculptor, Demetre Chiparus. It is estimated at £100,000£150,000. A London gold Freedom Box (£30,000-£50,000) presented to the Italian general and politician Giuseppe Garibaldi when he was awarded the Freedom of the City during his triumphant visit to London in 1864. Garibaldi was a key figure in the
Risorgimento, the unification movement which created the modern Italian state, and was regarded throughout Europe as a hero. Despite his reputation as a radical, he was admired by all sections of British society, including members of the royal family. A rare mid-19th century Italian oval micro-mosaic floral still life panel from the Vatican Workshops, (£30,000£50,000) Important Design is curated by Bonhams UK Head of Decorative Arts, Mark Wilkinson, who explained the thinking behind the new concept. “Important Design brings together in one sale more than 500 years of excellence in furniture and the decorative arts. Modern collectors and interior designers want to mix styles, makers and periods. By offering a carefully curated selection of objects, we aim to satisfy this growing demand, and to attract buyers who may not necessarily be collectors of a specific genre but are interested in purchasing a unique piece.” THE DETAILS For more information about Bonhams Important Design Sale 101 New Bond Street, London W1S 1SR Telephone 020 7447 7447 www.bonhams.com

PLANNING THE PERFECT POOL Enhancing your home with a swimming pool is a rewarding process but for many, it can also be a daunting task as it is unlike many other building projects.
O
rigin have specialised in the design and construction of high quality, luxury indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over 35 years. Here, they give expert advice on the four key steps that must be taken if you are thinking about embarking on this exciting journey
1
TALK TO THE EXPERTS The first stage of any swimming pool installation should be an onsite consultation with your chosen swimming pool builder to discuss your ideas and budget. This is a chance for you to
outline expected costs of installation and to establish whether planning permission is needed. At Origin, we offer a free on-site consultation with our experienced advisers. We also provide you with the chance to see examples of other projects; being able to visualise your ideas makes the decision process much easier. After this, a second meeting should be arranged giving you a chance to view the company’s initial proposals and provide feedback. You should come away from this meeting with a clear idea of the project length, costs, size, water treatment and energy options. This meeting is particularly

important as it allows you to make sure all of the leisure facilities and features that will suit your home, family and lifestyle are included in the design. Mrs Singh chose Origin to build her pool house and had a clear vision of how it should look: “I really wanted the build to complement the house exterior and I was keen to bring the outdoors in. We also wanted extra features to be incorporated into the design, like an outside seating area. “It was great working with Origin, I felt like my voice was heard throughout the whole process and we really worked in partnership to create my vision.” The final part of any consultation stage is to show you visuals of the project. This is an exciting meeting as you will see your ideas come to life whilst making decisions about finishing touches and any additional extra features.
2
PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE PERFECT POOL Planning permission can take up to eight weeks to be approved, so it’s important to get it right first time. Having an expert on your side will avoid your application being denied and can significantly speed up the process. Swimming pools that normally require planning permission or Building Regulations consent include: Indoor swimming pools where the design doesn’t meet Permitted Development criteria All swimming pools on listed premises Properties in conservation areas At Origin, we handle the whole swimming pool installation process from design to completion, so our experienced architects are happy to handle this stage of the build for you. Ian Scott, an Origin client, had to seek planning permission for his pool house: “The project was delayed during the planning phase because the local council wanted to carry out an independent assessment on the impact to the trees in the garden. In truth, I wasn’t really affected by this because Origin handled it all. They called a tree specialist and promptly had the garden evaluated. Thankfully, the project wasn’t going to have a major impact and the plans were approved.”
3
DESIGNING YOUR POOL All indoor swimming pools must be built in accordance with British Building Regulations, and special attention needs to be taken with the design of the vapour barrier, dehumidification and materials specification. You don’t need to worry about this stage too much as the architects and technical designers will specify on how this is achieved in your project. Origin is also on hand to discuss energy efficiency
such as solar panels, air source, heat pumps, variable speed pumps and pool covers.
4
ON HAND AT EVERY STAGE During the build, your project manager should conduct regular meetings to update you on progress. This gives you the opportunity to see all of the exciting developments taking place, ask those burning questions and make choices on the finer details, such as tiles and lighting. Hiring separate companies for each element of the build can be stressful, adding complications and unnecessary cost, as it means juggling communication and coordination with different organisations. At Origin, we will take care of every element of the design and build of your pool. This includes liaising with all external parties including local authority, Building Control and utilities companies, to ensure the swimming pool installation runs without a hitch and stays on schedule. THE DETAILS To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996
Once your project is complete, the only thing left to do is relax and enjoy your new swimming pool! MARCH 2017 5 7

HOUSE && GARDEN GARDEN HOUSE
Home is where
the art is
It could be argued that we're all artists, snapping away with our mobiles and generally enjoying a more visual world, but all too often our 'work' ends up unseen.
P
hotographs of family, friends and holidays are commonly left lingering on laptops and phones, instead of being out on display. What could be easier than dressing your walls with personal photos and artwork for an instant injection of personality? Traditionally, the walls of ancestral homes were hung with elaborate paintings of family members, and now, the modern, affordable equivalent is photographic family portraits. There are lots of ways to display photographic wall art. Individual shots can be blown up into high-impact images and displayed as a focal point. Another successful approach is for each family member to be shot separately rather than as a group - which captures the perso nality of the various individuals, then each can be framed and the prints grouped together on a wall. Create a gallery in a hallway or corridor - use matching frames in the same size and hang them in rows to draw your eye along the space. The great thing about adding art to your home is that it can be done on practically any budget. Whether it's investing in a painted piece of furniture or framing
old postcards or vintage prints, creating a cool, cohesive look is simple, effective and a great way to bring a home to life. Wall murals, once so naff, have won back their style credentials. There is a huge range online of foreign landscapes, feature shots and famous views from the Pyramids to the Eiffel Tower. Alternatively, opt for a gentle, bucolic effect with a watercolour landscape. Kicking convention out the window and displaying images you really love will result in walls that speak volumes about your taste and way of life. A vibrant or quirky piece of artwork adds a splash of personality in an instant. If hanging prints isn't quite your thing, consider utilising shelving space and carefully display framed artwork on it, or simply put prints on the floor and lean against a wall. For an inexpensive, imaginative touch, use your children's artwork - the more abstract and playful the pictures, the more striking the display will be. Don't be afraid to put a larger picture next to a smaller one, but perhaps balance it by having two or three small pictures taking up the same space as the larger one. A series of different sized pieces can look striking when carefully spaced and hung at the same mid-point, but allow each one enough room to breathe. Don't be tempted to hang paintings or prints too close together." Art now comes in all shapes, styles and sizes, giving the opportunity to use your creative flair and illustrate your interests and personality in your own home.

Helping new gardeners to grow National Gardening Week was launched six years ago by the RHS and since then has grown into the country’s biggest celebration of gardening. Thousands of people, gardens, charities, retailers, culture and heritage organisations and groups get involved and you can too!
T
his year’s National Gardening Week will focus on ways to inspire home gardeners to gain new green skills, as well as gain the many health benefits of growing plants and being active outdoors. The aim of National Gardening Week is to raise awareness of the diversity, richness and cultural value of the UK’s gardens, and to inspire new visitors to experience and enjoy them. Events and activities are being run up and
down the country including at the Royal Horticultural Society’s four gardens at RHS Wisley in Surrey, RHS Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire, RHS Hyde Hall in Essex, RHS Rosemoor in Devon, RHS Bridgewater in Greater Manchester. The RHS encourages organisations across Britain to hold their own events - from spring walks to gardening workshops. There are plenty of things you can do yourself or with your family to get into the spirit of National Gardening Week, from growing tomatoes on your windowsill to sprucing up your driveway. Get a few people together to transform or clean-up an unused or neglected space in your area (with permission of course!) If you have a garden or outdoor space, hold a garden party and invite your friends and neighbours! ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of the wall, with statement wallpaper above. FEATURE FLOORING Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words.
LET THE LIGHT IN Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will
act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger. STORAGE SOLUTIONS Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available. MAKE A FEATURE Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point - while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

URBAN MYTH
KITCHENS MADE IN-HOUSE, TAILORED FOR YOUR HOME
T
he word ‘bespoke’ is often used to describe designer kitchens and it refers to one that has been made from scratch, designed purely with the buyers needs in mind and manufactured to fit exactly into the required space. Your desired kitchen is totally built around you rather than your ideas having to adapt to an off the shelf version. You would be forgiven for thinking that ‘bespoke’ also has to mean expensive. At Urban Myth we believe that every kitchen has to be different, unique to those that will use it. at’s why, as well as an extensive range of kitchens from Germany and Italy, we also have our own range ‘Urban Life’. ese kitchens are made in our own factory by skilled craftsmen using state of the art machinery. By having a factory “in-house” our designers are able to create a kitchen exactly fitted to your space at a price you might not expect. Superior quality kitchens designed to your exact specification. From the very first meeting we invest a great deal of time learning about your needs and lifestyle. It’s not until 6 6 MARCH 2017
