njoy fun for all the family on Sunday 2nd June 2019 at Loughton Cricket Club, where two of Teens Unite’s most popular events will come together for an unforgettable day, suitable for all ages. ose aged 4-13 will run, climb, crawl, jump and slide their way around the assault course, in Teens Unite’s Junior Warrior Race. Participants will be entered into an age appropriate category. Alongside the Junior Warrior Race will be Teens Unite’s notorious It’s a Knockout event; where teams will compete on the inflatable assault course; embracing giant inflatables, hysterical games, oversized props, water and gallons of foam along the way.

You don’t have to participate to be a part of the action. Spectators are invited to come and watch the antics and enjoy a selection of stalls, games, attractions and BBQ. e charity event will raise vital funds and awareness for Teens Unite’s work to support young people who have been diagnosed with cancer.

We talk to Claire Osborn, Headmistress at both schools about their strengths in educating pupils ‘all-through’. Q: What are the benefits of Braeside and Normanhurst taking children from 2½ to 16? A: e staﬀ and pupils at all levels have outstanding relationships. Many of our pupils have been pupils of the schools since they were 2 or 3 and we understand the educational needs of children all the way through their education. We ensure that the progression from one stage to the next is smooth and supported. Teachers share their knowledge and understanding of the children and progress is maintained. A: ere are breakfast and teatime clubs available from 7.30am to 6pm and an extensive range of extra-curricular clubs and activities as well as a variety of holiday clubs including multi-sports, Early Years, and drama. Q: How is it for pupils who join Braeside and Normanhurst at 11+? A: A large percentage of our Year 7 entry at both schools still come in from other schools, either local state primary or independent prep schools. e move to secondary school can be daunting but our internal pupils know their way around, understand the way that the school works and help those who join the School at this stage from elsewhere to settle in. External candidates are extremely successful. is was evident from the GCSE results this year. At Braeside 95% of grades achieved were at grade 4 or above, equivalent to a previous grade C or higher, with 47% of grades at grades 7-9, equivalent to the previous grades A*or A. At Normanhurst 87% of grades achieved were at grade 4 or above, equivalent to a previous grade C or higher, with 100% passes in English, Drama, Art, Graphic Design and Music, including a number of grade 9 awards, as well as 100% passes in the triple sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and French. n

he financial year end of 5th April is approaching fast. If you haven’t already done so, these are some of the personal finance areas you should be checking: • Pension contributions e maximum pension contribution on which tax relief can be claimed in any one year is £40,000, but you are withdrawing funds under a flexible drawdown arrangement, then the limit reduces to £4,000. is is intended to stop people recycling funds by claiming tax relief twice on the same contribution. In order to qualify for tax relief, the maximum personal contribution must not exceed 100% of your pensionable earnings, though employer contributions would permit this limit to be exceeded. • Tapered allowances e tapered annual allowance limits the amount a higher earner can put into a pension. e tapering eﬀect reduces an individual’s annual allowance from £40,000 down to £10,000, but the allowance is only reduced at a rate of £1 for every £2 over the income limits. If you earn over £150,000 gross per annum, there is a good chance you will fall into this category and advice should be sought. • Carry forward Provided that the annual allowance for pension contributions has been used in full in any one year, you can carry forward any unused allowance from up to three previous years. e oldest unused relief must be carried forward first, and no allowance can be carried forward from years in which the scheme member was not a member of a registered pension scheme. • Pension lifetime allowance e maximum sum which can be saved in a pension scheme over the course of a lifetime without incurring tax charges is currently £1,030,000 for the tax year 2018-19. is sum covers all the pensions you may have, including the value of any pensions due from any defined benefit schemes, but it does not include your state pension. way as with previous reductions in the lifetime allowance, it is possible within strictly defined limits to preserve larger sums by applying to HM Revenue & Customs for ‘protection’ before the tax year end on 5 April. • Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowance e maximum amount which can be contributed to an ISA in 2018/19 is £20,000 (and will be the same in 2019/20). Both spouses are entitled to their own allowance, but unlike the situation with pensions, an unused ISA allowance cannot be carried forward. So it really is a case of ‘use it or lose it’! • Capital Gains Tax It is worth checking to ensure that the £11,700 exemption from Capital Gains Tax is used each year by both members of a married couple to shield gains on investments which are not held within a tax-protected ‘wrapper’ such as an ISA. • Personal allowance e personal tax allowance is currently £11,850 p.a., increasing to £12,500 p.a. from 6 April 2019. When a taxpayer’s income exceeds £100,000 p.a., the personal allowance starts to be reduced, and it ceases to be available when income reaches £122,000. e eﬀect is that income between these two levels is taxed at up to 60%. • Inheritance Tax Gifts can be made each tax year which will reduce the value of an estate for the purposes of Inheritance Tax. e annual exemption is £3,000, and if this is not fully used in one year the balance can be carried forward to the next. In addition, gifts up to £5,000 can be made by parents on the marriage of children, and £2,500 by grandparents. Furthermore, any number of gifts of £250 can be made without attracting tax. e most valuable exemption applies to outright gifts of unlimited value which are made to individuals (and not trusts) more than seven years before the death of the donor. ereafter, these ‘potentially exempt transfers’ become wholly exempt from Inheritance Tax. n

private investigator (often abbreviated to PI and informally called a private eye), a private detective, or inquiry agent, is a person who can be hired by individuals or groups to undertake investigatory law services. Many private detectives/investigators with special academic and practical experience also work with defence lawyers on criminal defence cases. Many others are insurance investigators who investigate suspicious claims. Before the advent of no-fault divorce, many private investigators sought evidence of adultery or other conduct within marriage to establish grounds for a divorce. Despite the lack of legal necessity for such evidence in many jurisdictions, according to press reports, collecting evidence of spouses' and partners' adultery or other "bad behaviour" is still one of their most profitable undertakings, as the stakes being fought over now are child custody, alimony, or marital property disputes. Private investigators can also perform due diligence for an investor considering investing with an investment group, fund manager, or other high-risk business or investment venture. is could help the prospective investor avoid being the victim of a fraud. In 2001, the government passed the licensing of private investigators and private investigation firms in the UK over to the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which acted as the regulatory body from then on. However, due to the cutbacks of this agency, licensing of private investigators in the UK was halted indefinitely. At present, no government-backed authorities in the UK license private investigators. It is therefore imperative that before hiring an investigator, that the individual is certain of the investigators credentials, experience and ability to deliver eﬀective results. Virgin Money London Marathon 2019 Sunday 28th April

ince the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity and is now established as one of the major events in the global sporting calendar. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. The iconic images of thousands of runners pounding the streets with sheer determination to raise money for charity could only inspire you to join them. The 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon have announced a world-beating landmark in the history of the world’s greatest marathon as fundraising from the event will exceed an astonishing £1billion! Hugh Brasher, Event Director said: An incredible £63.7million was raised from the 2018 event. That brought the total raised since 1981 to more than £955million and on Sunday 28 April 2019, in the 39th London Marathon, we will break the £1billion mark! It is a phenomenal achievement. We would like to thank every runner, supporter, donator, charity, volunteer, sponsor, spectator, staff member and everyone else who has contributed to this wonderful total.” Sir Mo Farah will return to the Virgin Money London Marathon this year with four Olympic gold medals and six World Championship victories. In his first year as a dedicated marathon runner, Farah finished third in 2018 in a British record time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 21 seconds. It has been announced that the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon will host the 2019 World Para Athletics Marathon Championships. This will be the second time London has hosted the Championships following a successful first edition in 2015 which saw three world records broken on the streets of our British capital. David Weir will be at the start line for the 20th consecutive time, taking part in his first London Marathon in 2000. He has since gone on to win the race on a record-breaking eight occasions, and will

be targeting an incredible ninth victory in 2019. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include close friends of national treasure Dame Barbara Windsor. The team will be running for the Dementia Revolution, a year-long campaign created by Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK for the event’s Charity of the Year. The team worked with Barbara on EastEnders and include Adam Woodyatt, Jake Wood, Emma Barton, Natalie Cassidy, Kellie Shirley, Tanya Franks, Jamie Borthwick and Jane Slaughter. Dame Barbara Windsor says “It means so much to me to see some of my closest friends coming together to support this cause. this is something we talked about for such a long time, unsure if we would enjoy this part of the world, but what we did know is that going on Crystal Cruises would be amazing, so we’d take a chance and try. We flew to Singapore which is somewhere we will never forget. after a 12 hour flight we left our bags, had a quick shower and went out in this safe exciting city and experienced the best peking duck we have ever had in our lives. We were so excited to be in Singapore and couldn’t wait to venture out the next day where we visited many tourist attractions and finished up having afternoon tea with the beautiful Singapore ladies with only 800 choices of teas, it was very special. never experienced humidity like this, not good for the hair!! the next day we boarded the Crystal Symphony it’s a feeling of contentment and excitement as you know you will be spoilt rotten, pampered and made to feel very special. What makes Crystal unique are the staff looking after us every step on the way. We are totally Crystallised and until you try it yourself, you will never understand what we mean. Our first stop was yangon myanmar (formally burma) where we visited the golden temple encrusted with jewels it was breathtaking, we meditated with the monks and nuns. it was 97 degrees that day very hot but one of the most beautiful days we have ever had. after the temple we visited the myanmar marketplace, and that’s very special, selling street food to furniture, a delightful boy followed us all around the market

calling me papa and getting a chair for me and a fan whenever Sharon stopped at what must have been 30 different stalls just looking at the wonderful array of things being sold by delightful smiley happy people. When we finished and i gave the boy 5$ which the boy said it will feed his family for a week. india was something that will stay with us forever, the heat, the poverty and the happiest people always smiling. We were on our own now we left the ship about to explore mumbai. Our first experience of india is when we came out the big green gate at the port of mumbai and the Oberoi Hotel sent their mercedes to meet us and as we got into the car there must of been 30 kids holding out their hands, it’s quite heartbreaking and made us feel very uncomfortable but it was something that was going to happen a lot during our stay. i will never moan about ironing again after visiting the famous laundry where everything is done by hand working up-to 20 hours each day over 7,000 workers flog, scrub, dye and bleach clothes on concrete wash pens and dry them on ropes. it was fascinating. india is colourful and a very happy place to be. from the moment we arrived at the Oberoi Hotel their gracious staff made you feel so pampered. that pampering continued when we were looking at the menus at the hotels indian Restaurant and out came the food and beverage manager who asked us what we enjoy and he said leave it to me and i will create a dish tailored to your personal preference. that is exactly what he did and it was delicious. He even made me a traditional indian breakfast which was just so very different. Who knew i would eat a vegetable curry for breakfast i surprised myself. in life sometimes it’s good to try something different maybe something you have never done before and we are proof that our adventure was one of the best experiences of our lives. n the ITV documentary series Islands Of America, Martin Clunes takes an epic 10,000-mile journey around the coast of the USA, sampling the diversity of its many islands that dot the country’s coastline. Star of the show, Martin Clunes, says: “I want to look beyond corporate America and discover the other United States, out past the mainland margins, and what life is like on these unique and diverse islands.” Feeling inspired? From the rolling green landscapes of Hawaii to the snow-capped glaciers of Alaska, here are some of the destinations featured in the programme. Brown bear on Kodiak Island in Alaska

Hawaii The USA’s 50th state is host to iconic landmarks such as Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor. Beyond that, the islands are home to an array of natural wonders and rich culture. Kauai, the Garden Isle, has luscious rainforests, whilst Maui’s Road to Hana provides incredible vistas across sparkling blue seas. Molokai, a favourite for Clunes, is considered ‘Hawaii in its truest form’, offering untapped opportunities to experience the local culture and the raw, natural beauty synonymous with the island.

Kodiak Island, Alaska Known as ‘The Last Frontier’ for its rugged landscapes, the USA’s largest state offers an abundance of scenic tundra and wildlife. Kodiak Island is an hour-long plane ride from Anchorage, and hosts one of the state’s most iconic creatures, the Kodiak bear. Upon his visit, Clunes managed to experience the magnificent animal first-hand, including a mother and two cubs. From Juneau, visitors can fly to Gustavus to cruise around Glacier Bay. Alongside spectacular views of ice-walls and bears along the banks, you can enjoy the ‘voices of Glacier Bay’, such as the crack of ice as glaciers trundle along, the call of humpback whales and the howl of wolves.

San Juan Islands, Washington

The picturesque San Juan Islands, just off America’s north-west Pacific coast, right on the border with Canada, are considered a haven for wildlife. In particular, visitors have a good chance of seeing incredible marine life, including orcas and humpback whales, as well as a variety of birds. At high tide, the San Juan archipelago comprises over 400 islands and rocks, three of which are reachable by ferry: Orcas Island, San Juan Island and Lopez Island. These and the surrounding islands and reefs offer a dazzling array of snorkelling.

Channel Islands National Park, California Further South in sunny California, off the coast of Los Angeles, sits the Channel Islands National Park. Much like the San Juan Islands, they are teeming

with wildlife, and visitors can dive into a selection of activities, such as kayaking and snorkelling. In the programme, Clunes accompanies conservationist Dr Tony Orr to observe some of the 100,000-strong population of sea lions and seals, describing it as a ‘privilege’ to be amongst them.

Avery Island, Louisiana An inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, this geological oddity is covered with subtropical flora and oaks draped with Spanish moss. It sits atop a deposit of solid rock salt thought to be deeper than Mount Everest is high, rising 150 feet above the surrounding bayou. The island is also home to one of America’s most successful family-run businesses, Tabasco chilli sauce. Chilli peppers were first planted on the island more than 150 years ago by Tabasco’s founder, Edmund McIlhenny.

Puerto Rico Out into the Caribbean Sea is the USA’s third largest island, Puerto Rico. It’s one of the best spots in the world for bioluminescence, a phenomenon where plankton create a magical light effect across the shoreline. A blend of Spanish, American and native Taino cultures, Puerto Rico has a vibrant salsa scene; you can take lessons in the capital, San Juan, and once you’ve worked up an appetite, indulge in Latin American cuisine at any one of the cafes, food trucks or street food stalls that are dotted around the city.

New York New York City’s status and size often makes people forget it’s made up of several islands. The iconic Empire State Building, on Manhattan Island, stands more than 1,000 feet tall. Islands Of America emphasises how the city has been intrinsically shaped by the water. Ellis Island exemplifies this; the entry point for immigrants, a third of Americans can trace their roots here. Clunes found that he shares a surname with 62 of the immigrants entering the US through the Ellis Island immigration centre. Founder of Winged Boots, DAVID OX, gives us in an insight into providing travel thatâ€™s out of the ordinary

ou’ve spent hours scanning the web trying to find that ideal destination with your favourite cocktail on the hotel bar menu and you’ve given up. That’s where luxury travel specialist, Winged Boots, and its personal travel managers step in. However, forget waking up at eight for cornflakes to get to work for nine. Personalising holidays to every individual client’s wants and needs is not a ‘9-5’ job, as founder and managing director, David Ox, tells us… Originating from a black book of clients, Ox grew the business through providing great service to a small number of clients, who then referred their friends to him after appreciating the benefits of a bespoke experience. He now oversees the 20+ team and networks at a range of events to gain more customers: “A big part of my job is to find new clients and to also keep our existing ones happy, so I spend at least a couple of days a week in the city networking and following up on potential leads,” David says. “Certain people will only deal with me, so while the personal managers handle all the leads, I do still deal with some of the enquiries. No two enquiries, and no two days, are ever the same.” Another thing to put the personal travel managers under pressure? The average booking window for Winged Boots is only three months! Ox explains: “Winged Boots’ personal travel managers live and breathe the brand and give blood, sweat and tears to every booking. They’re looking after high net worth, demanding clients so these guys have to be on it 24/7. Our job is a lifestyle choice.” The calendar seems to expand at a quicker rate than places on your travel bucket list, with upcoming holidays and events in the interest of the company’s clients constantly being announced, so the personal travel managers must have their eye on the travel ball continuously. “The team have been busy organising all the flights for the recently announced Anthony Joshua fight in New York on the 1st June so there’s been lots of chopping and changing in the office of late,” David explains. Last minute bookings are how the team here roll. Along with a September wedding in Lake Como, business trips to South Africa and Orlando, and Christmas enquiries already trickling in, being a personal travel manager requires expert knowledge and a lot of juggling. However, it’s Winged Boots’ pledge of ‘going the extra mile’, which is what Ox says he is most proud of: “We’re willing to do what other agencies are not.

Whether it’s picking up the phone at 10pm on a Friday night to book a flight that departs at 9am the next day or trying to get complimentary upgrades or refunds where they’re due, we work around the clock fighting our clients’ corner.” You could be wondering by now how you haven’t come across Winged Boots before. Traditional advertising is a no-no here, and all the team’s efforts are drilled into the brand’s original concept lifestyle brochure magazine and events programme, which gives customers a little something extra. “We offer our clients tickets to shows at the O2 arena and host private dinners in London. We organised our first golf day in summer 2018 which was a massive success, so we’re constantly inviting our clients to interesting new events and networking with them,” Ox says. The final question is what are the rewards of the job? “I think it’s 70% enjoyable, 20% stressful and 10% completely unknown - but what job isn’t!” laughs Ox.

Did you know that a number of foods are linked with reduced inflammation? LIZ CONNOR rounds up five to add to the menu now.

oint pain can occur at any time of the year, but some people find it can particularly flare up when the weather is cold. Some studies have suggested that this because when temperatures dip, our body prioritises supplying vital organs like the heart, which restricts how much blood it sends to our hands and feet. As a result, researchers have theorised that the tissues around the joints become less pliable, so joints can feel tighter and more uncomfortable than usual. Joint pain can occur for a range of reasons, of course, including osteoarthritis, which affects millions of Brits to some extent or other. While there’s no magic recipe to take arthritis away, there is evidence that diet - and certain foods in particular - could play a role in helping fight inflammation and joint pain (alongside tailored professional advice from your doctor and medication if required). Wondering which foods might help keep winter joint pain at bay? Here are some foods that have been linked with joint health...

Fatty fish Fatty and oily fish - like salmon, trout and mackerel - are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have found can help fight inflammation associated with arthritis pain. It’s thought that marine fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can reduce the production of immune cells called leukocytes and enzymes known as cytokines, which are both important components in the body’s inflammatory response. Experts generally recommend at least three to four ounces of fish, twice a week, to reap the joint-friendly benefits.

Garlic As well as being a delicious base for soups, sauces or a tasty stir-fry, studies have shown that people who regularly eat foods from the allium family enjoy fewer signs of osteoarthritis, the most common chronic joint condition in the UK. Garlic, like onions and leeks, contains diallyl disulfide - an antiinflammatory compound that can limit the effects of cytokines. Top tip: Plump for fresh garlic, as the

preservatives in bottled garlic may effect some of its benefits.

Ginger As well as being used to soothe an upset stomach, a daily slice of fresh ginger may also help ease the symptoms of arthritis. One 2001 study assessed how 261 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee responded to taking a capsule of ginger extract, twice a day. After six weeks, 63% reported improvements in their discomfort levels. This aromatic spice can be used to add zest to cooking, enjoyed fresh or brewed in tea. If you’re not fond of the taste, you can find it in supplement form too.

Walnuts Walnuts are one of the most versatile nuts going you can sprinkle them on salads, toss them into a noodle dish, or simply enjoy them as a mid-morning snack. These hardy nuts are great for joints as they’re high in alpha linoleic acid (ALA), a type of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid which plays a role in keeping inflammation under control.

Berries Who can resist a bowl of berries with a dollop of yogurt in the morning? As well as being naturally low in calories, this simple breakfast dish may also have some powerful benefits for joints - as well as your health in general. Berries such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, which researchers have found can protect your body against inflammation and free radicals - unstable molecules that can damage cells and organs - and may be associated with lower levels of inflammation. Take advantage of seasons fresh berries (although you can also buy them frozen), and if you have a garden, why not giving growing your own a go?
