The largest free arts and entertainment festival of its kind in London, Summer by the River will bring a touch of The Hamptons’ coastal elegance to London Bridge City this year with a new, stylish shoreside theme. Launched on 30th May, Chaps Choir will get Summer by the River off to a flying start with their joy-inducing repertoire of choral pop classics at The Scoop. Eskies bring their unique brand of gipsy jazz in a swaggering stage spectacular. June and July is packed with entertainment for all ages. With open air cinema and theatre, big screen summer sports, live comedy and music performances, fun family days, fitness classes and a host of events to let your hair down on a Friday, Summer by the River will be the ultimate London experience this summer. During August, London’s Free Open-Air Theatre will return to celebrate its 16th summer residency at The Scoop. This year, a new family production of “The Sea Queen” will introduce families to the magic of theatre as they follow the swashbuckling tale of pirate and Irish queen of the seas, Grainne O’Malley. As the sun sets over the Thames, Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy “Twelfth Night” will grace the stage. Each production will run between 7th August and 1st September, all of which are free to attend. No festival would be complete without flavourful food and this year Summer by the River is teaming up with popup guru Jimmy Garcia to fuel the riverside celebrations. Responsible for some of London’s most talked about popup restaurants and concepts, Jimmy’s team will be at The Scoop’s Bar by the River with a unique food offering across the summer months. This will include the hugely popular The BBQ Club which offers visitors the ultimate alfresco dining experience on table top BBQ’s. Look Mum No Hands will also be returning for their third year in a row to transform The Pier area at London Bridge City. The cycle café pioneers’ bar will offer wholesome food, drinks and its own programme of events including Tour de France screenings. Summer by the River will also be activating the London Bridge City table tennis area and a new popup staging area in Hay’s Galleria. This will provide a platform which champions emerging musicians and provides a muchneeded performance opportunity in the heart of London.

WHAT A GOOD SPORT AT OAK-TREE
T
he importance of sports and games in school is about more than just the benefit of physical activity. Sport helps children develop character and to learn important social and brain skills such as problem-solving, resilience, perseverance, confidence and teamwork. Competitive sports particular strengths of the Oak-Tree Group of Schools. Braeside uses some of the district’s finest sporting facilities, including the Lee Valley Athletics Centre that was used as an Olympic training venue and Loughton Leisure Centre. Clubs and after school activities are open to all pupils. Every Friday morning pupils take part in running club to help prepare them for the ISA Cross Country championships. In Years 7 to 11 the pupils build on the physical skills learned in the lower years to become more confident in techniques across a broad range of sports as individuals and as part of a team. is aims to develop the confidence to get involved in exercise and sporting activities out of school and in later life. is year Braeside went to Bedford with 34 competitors from Year 4 to 10 for the annual ISA North London Athletics competition. Results included one pupil winning the hurdles race and one coming 2nd in the 1500m to go through to the National stage of the competition. Physical Education is used to develop the pupils’ competence and confidence, and also to encourage creativity. THEYDON BOIS DONKEY DERBY RIDES AGAIN

ocal estate Agent Butler & Stag are once again proud sponsor of the eydon Bois Scout Group 32nd annual Donkey Derby, taking place on e Green on Sunday 14th July 12 noon until 4.00pm. Managing Director Neil Leahy lives in eydon Bois, and as a local community champion he has given priority to helping local causes since the local office opened two years ago. Neil says “Our philosophy is simple. As well as giving our clients and customers a first-class service we like to give something back to local community projects and charities that need our help. Butler & Stag was founded in 2012. We have been actively raising money ever since and have generated over £40,000 for our chosen causes. e Donkey Derby highlights the true spirit of eydon Bois and our wonderful green. It’s a fun event for everyone and raises much needed funds for the local Scouts and Guides groups and other village charities.” Continuing their support for a host of local schools, Churches, and charities, a team of five are lined up to take part in the Haven House Children's Hospice London to Brighton Cycle Ride in September. e Donkey Derby has become synonymous with the village with more than 4,000 people crowding onto the green eager to bet on and watch the jockeys, all aged between 10 and 15, get their donkeys round the course without

falling off. ere are seven races, with seven donkeys in each. e donkeys receive great care whatever the weather. ere will be the usual mix of fun stalls and activities including the very popular ‘beat the goalie’ which will be run again by sponsors Butler & Stag. e Donkey Derby committee, who organise the event, works hard to keep the event true to its roots with more old-fashioned games plus it supports local businesses and charities who want stalls. A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY – OR A RISKY INVESTMENT?
I
n times of crisis, investing in gold has
traditionally been a safe haven for savers. But is it really such a good option? Scrutton Bland’s Financial Planning Partner Grant Buchanan investigates the wisdom of going for gold. Gold has been used for decoration and currency for thousands of years. In around 700 BC an alloy of silver and gold known as electrum was used in the Kingdom of Lydia (part of modern day Turkey) and the Venetians produced the gold ducat in 1284 AD, the same year the gold florin first appeared in England. e acquisition and trading of gold coins has long been a subject in art and literature: think of Long John Silver’s parrot shrieking “pieces of eight!” in Treasure Island, or the paintings of the Dutch Old Masters, such as Rembrandt and de Hooch, who frequently depicted images of people weighing and exchanging gold coins. Today we invest our savings in different ways, although traditional ‘safe havens’ in times of uncertainty for investment markets have been bonds, cash and gold. But with bonds and cash currently offering negligible returns, the political turmoil surrounding Brexit, the economic slowdown in China and doubts about the strength of the US economy, many professional investors have been prompted to favour gold. George Soros, the US billionaire who famously “broke the Bank of England” in 1992 by betting against sterling, and who has an aptitude for calling markets, has been an enthusiastic buyer of the precious metal. Meanwhile, the Royal Mint, the Government body which is responsible for “minting” Britain’s coins, is offering investors the opportunity to invest their pension pots in gold 2 0 JUNE 2019
However, buying gold in the form of bullion is expensive. ere is a buyer’s premium of around 1.5%, and a 1% charge for selling. en there is the cost of storage and insurance, costing perhaps £300 per year. An alternative way of investing in gold is via a security such as an Exchange Traded Fund (‘ETF’), which can carry a lower cost but still has platform charges and broker fees. ere are also of course indirect ways of investing in the value of the metal such as to buy shares in gold mines or bullion dealers. And what about the return? Gold produces no interest and no income, and the only means of profiting is by selling it – which may be subject to Capital Gains Tax. However, gold does have the advantage of being a physical asset, and as such provides some protection against inflation. Over the past 20 years, the gold price has risen by more than threefold, but gold bought at its peak in 2001 lost 25% of its value over the following five years. Such figures demonstrate the extreme volatility of the gold market, making it a market to view with caution. elebrating and interrogating their ‘sceptred isle’ through Shakespeare’s history plays, a year-long journey begins with Richard II, in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, continuing into the Globe Theatre this summer with Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V. (opens 23 April) The cast will comprise the new resident Globe Ensemble, echoing the approach that Shakespeare’s company would have taken over 400 years ago. The season also includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream (opens 28 June) The Merry Wives of Windsor (opens 17 May) Ben Jonson’s Bartholomew Fair (opens 23 August) and the return of 2018’s As You Like It (opens 17 August) Robin Hood tales will form the core of the Read Not Dead series this year, and festivals throughout the summer include Women & Power and Poland is Hamlet. ear 12 and going strong! ere’s no stopping the enthusiasm of 1000’s of people who flock to the beautiful beaches of Sandbanks, Dorset, UK on the second weekend in July. What has become known as “e Sandbanks Weekend” or “e Sandbanks Festival in the sporting and social calendar of the South Coast of England continues to attract the crowds year after year. Curiosity brought people to watch high quality beach polo at Sandbanks for the first few years but since then the parties, hospitality, fashion shows and now a beach rugby element, not to mention the Sandfest music festival on the Sunday, has kept the audience guessing and wanting more. e heavily watered beach arena provides a firm playing surface, and when surrounded by elaborate marquees, staging and grandstands e British Beach Polo Championships, otherwise known as Sandpolo has become a must go to event. With a ticketed capacity of 5000 on site the polo can also be enjoyed by spectators along the beach from a raised sand platform. is gives polo, over the 2-day event, exposure to a wide variety of people and business platforms. e polo, played under the authority of the Hurlingham Polo Association, attracts 4 competitive medium goal teams of 3 players. Each team plays on both days with a further exhibition game on the Saturday. International teams are welcome and bring an interesting dimension. e event has welcomed Australian, South African, Argentinian, Irish and Welsh teams amongst others. A charity race is held between the 2 fastest ponies on each day in aid of the Household Cavalry Foundation. e fashion show, held in the main marquee, is the transition from the polo and sporting activities to the epic after-parties. e show features top designers from beach to leisure and evening wear. e beach parties that follow the day’s polo and the fashion show are a highlight for many. is year e House & Garage Orchestra, with incredible vocalists and DJs, will entertain guests until 1am at the Pure Polo party on the opening night. Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw will host the closing Sandpolo Ocean Party on the Saturday. Tickets range from the Sandpolo Hospitality which gives holders access to the ringside dining marquee. Starting with a champagne reception guests enjoy a delicious 3 course lunch followed by afternoon tea and VIP access to the after-parties. VIP tickets are also extremely popular providing exclusive bars, loos and luxury

Stressbusting Surrey garden collaboration wins coveted silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

elebrating success at the UK’s most anticipated horticultural event of the year, the Silent Pool Gin Garden wins a prestigious silver-gilt medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where innovative design and horticultural expertise combine to showcase some of the country’s most exciting and inventive gardening feats. Blending the passion and expertise of David Neale of Neale Richards Garden Design and University of Surrey academics Professor Tony Myatt and Professor Richard Murphy, the Silent Pool Gin Garden takes inspiration from plant technologies and the greening of inner city spaces. Born from the vision to create a space that absorbs stress through scent, sound and sight, the garden also invites you to consider the making of gin, the inventive use of recycled materials and the power of plants to create energy. Many of the botanicals used in the making of gin are represented in the planting and symbolised by a single juniper bonsai tree given its own floating shelf on the garden wall, while a striking hanging seat gives a nod to the distillery’s copper stills. A Perspex teal water wall etched with Silent Pool’s signature botanicals forms part of the garden’s feature aqueduct. Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability Professor Richard Murphy said: “After
careful planning and exploring of new sustainable technologies, we are very excited to present our united efforts at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. “With the help of engineering students from SurreyEARS (the electronics and amateur radio student society), intricately installed sensors orchestrate Tony Myatt’s natural soundscape, triggering sounds of birds and insects in response to environmental changes in humidity, light, temperature and wind. This, coupled with live electricity generation from the plant microbial fuel cells, has been a brilliant way to engage, inform and intrigue visitors, encouraging an appreciation for plants and the significant role they can play in wellbeing and sustainability.” Ian McCulloch, Founder and Director of Silent Pool Distillers said: “By collaborating with NRGD and the University of Surrey, we were able to create a garden that truly engaged, informed and intrigued visitors in appreciating the critical role of plants to their own well-being, as well as the futures of others. Keratinocytes slowly migrate from the basal layer up toward your skin’s surface, dividing and changing as they go. - As you age, skin cell turnover slows. As a result, dead skin cells build up on the skin’s surface, making skin look duller. When you age, collagen production decreases and your skin’s ability to repair collagen and elastin decreases, resulting in wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Young skin has thick bundles of tightly packed collagen while older skin has thin, loose bundles of collagen.

My life changed instantly; from the moment I was told I had cancer, I wasn’t allowed to leave the hospital. e biggest struggles for me were probably the psychological ones; knowing that you might die in the foreseeable future or wondering whether you will ever return to normal, takes its toll. I found it quite difficult to relate to the people surrounding me, and I often felt a little lost and isolated. I can happily say that my situation has drastically improved since then and I've now been in remission for just over three years.
