useum galleries sprang to life in an enchanting dance exploration called On the Move. Dancers performed to over 200 visitors at Epping Forest District Museum on 30 April 2016. Students from the Waltham Abbey-based DNA Studios performed dance interpretations by Choreographer in Residence, Elysia Tebb. Dances were inspired by the themes in the temporary exhibitions gallery, On the Move. e group performed this piece before dispersing around the museum where they performed their own individual pieces, offering a new and slightly different take on the interpretation of the galleries displays. REOPENING CELEBRATION e performances were a celebration of Epping Forest District Museum’s reopening after its Heritage Lottery Funded refurbishment and expansion. INNOVATIVE PERFORMANCE Speaking about the project, Epping Forest District Council’s Dance Engagement Officer Vanessa Gayton said: “e On e Move Dance project finds both the Museum and DNA Performing Arts students experiencing

a totally unique way of representation and performance. “is is an immersive experience for the young people involved as they interpret the history of the collections, working in unconventional settings and interacting closely with their audience. “e week-long residency has challenged their imaginations, spatial awareness, self-confidence and fitness levels, building towards what will, no doubt, be an innovative performance for our visitors to enjoy.” n

COMMEMORATING 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme

s part of the national commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, EFDC is holding an overnight vigil on the grass in front of the Control Tower at North Weald Airfield. It will begin at sunset with the lighting of a symbolic brazier set next to a section of trench and

guarded by re-enactors dressed as World War 1 soldiers. ey will maintain the brazier through the night. At 04:15 an ecumenical service will be held to remember the sacrifice and honour the dead of the battle which lasted from July until November. When the sun starts to rise at around 04:45 a sound and light show will reproduce the noise of battle at the time the troops went over the top to the sound of oﬃcers’ whistles. Food and drinks will be available along with ample parking and toilets in the Tower. e trench will be in place for several weeks to allow local schoolchildren and the community to experience a small part of what it would have been like as a soldier in the front line during World War 1. e Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey will loan their collection which will be on display in the Tower. North Weald Celebrates 100 Years… ere are a variety of events for our 100th Anniversary year. e Air Britain Fly-in over the weekend of 18-19 June represents the actual date the first flight took place at the new Landing Ground. Cost for entry to the event is Vehicle plus driver £12, each additional adult £6. Under-18s free. is year the event celebrates 70 years of the Stinson 108, Vultee (Stinson) V-77 and Ryan Navion, 60 years of the Piper PA24 Comanche and 30 years of the Vans RV-6. e Nostalgair classic aircraft and

vehicle show on Sunday 7 August at e Squadron will also be celebrating our 100th Anniversary with a range of aircraft and cars on display from across the decades. On 2, 3 and 4 September we are screening three days of outdoor movies with an aviation theme: Planes (Disney), Top Gun, e Battle of Britain and e Blue Max from WW1 at e Squadron. Tickets are £6 each and will be bookable online. Hot food and drink will be available, including a special centenary beer – Scramble Ale. Special 100th Anniversary beer glasses can also be purchased for £4.50 each. Finally, there will be a spectacular fireworks display on the evening of Friday 4 November. n

ACADEMIES VS PRIVATE SCHOOLS as, even after some 15 years, it isn’t clear whether academies actually increase academic standards. With classes this large it is diﬃcult for teachers to really know each pupil and any additional needs on a personal basis.

The topic of state schools turning into academies is very current. With many local parents concerned about the transition, we look at the strengths of choosing a privately-owned independent school over an academy. ACADEMIES

t was a Government directive to convert all state schools into academies until the recent announcement by the Chancellor downgrading this to more of an aspiration. Academies are state-funded schools that receive their funding directly from central government, rather than through a local authority. e day-to-day running of the school is with the head teacher or principal, but they are overseen by academy trusts and may be part of a chain. Academies control their own admissions and have more freedom to use non-Local Authority approved services. With a lack of guidance and support from the Local Authority and sudden responsibility of finances and curriculum, many new academies have been struggling and some have even closed. Staﬀ have been worried about the changes with fears regarding future pay and conditions, together with the inevitable extra workload with curriculum developments and concerns about securing future employment if their academy moves away from the National Curriculum. At the grass roots, class sizes are still very large – most in their 30s. Many parents are concerned about acadamisation

One of the most important factors that parents consider is the size of the school. Smaller, nurturing environments oﬀer a more personalised service but can small be too small? Popular events include the Oak-Tree Year 3 overnight Camp, the Oak-Tree Art Exhibition, the biennial Oak-Tree Performing Arts Festival and entertainment for families with the Group Fireworks Display and parents with the Group Summer Ball. Pupils at Braeside School, Buckhurst Hill So perhaps the new chains of academies can learn a thing or two from this successful Group of local private schools, which has long since established the excellent practice that academies strive to achieve. n

QUINTESSENTIAL ESSEX IN CHIPPING ONGAR

he name Chipping Ongar has such a lovely ring to it. It feels quaint, very English, rural and tranquil. A small market town within the civil parish of Ongar in Epping Forest, conveniently located for various regions covered within this magazine’s, readership remit. Only 5 miles from Epping and 6 miles from Brentwood, a pleasant ride during the imminent summer months would be to Chipping Ongar. Aside its aesthetic appeal, the area also has an interesting history. ere has been evidence of a Roman settlement. Originally the town was known as ‘Castle Ongar’ because of the remains of a Norman ‘Motte and Bailey’ built around the 11th or 12th century. e motte or mound has a base diameter of 70 metres and is surrounded by a wet ditch up to approximately 15 metres wide. e castle may have been built by Eustace II, Count of Boulogne in 1086 and it enjoyed royal patronage from Henry II in 1157 when the castle was owned by Richard de Lucy. Probably the most famous resident of Chipping Ongar is the 19th century missionary and explorer, David Livingstone. Dr. Livingstone is probably most famous for that renowned greeting when discovered by Sir Henry 2 0 JUNE 2016

Morton Stanley, who was searching for the Scottish missionary in Central Africa. Upon their rendezvous Sir Stanley uttered those words: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” A plaque above the archway leading to the United Reformed Church commemorates David Livingstone’s residence. Chipping Ongar also has some famous literary connections. e author of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, the popular English lullaby was written by Jane Taylor. e poem is written in couplets and has five stanzas. It was first published in 1806 and is sung to the tune of the French melody "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman.” Jane Taylor died of breast cancer at the age of 40 and is buried in Ongar churchyard. e town is also featured in Will Self’s, ‘e Book of Dave’. Knowleton Hall is the most famous estate in Ongar due to its interesting history. If looking for an exciting and fun excursion for all the family, there’s the Epping to Ongar Railway steam train. CHANGING CHILDREN’S LIVES CHARITY CAMPAIGN Ash’s fundraising vision continues Our eagerly awaited charity fundraising event draws close with just a few tickets left to sell. It’s going to be a fabulous occasion when we hope to exceed our target of £20,000! This month celebrates Volunteers Week 1st-12th June. Christine Baker takes a look at the important role played by volunteers and their support for charities.

aven House Children’s Hospice is saying thank you to all the volunteers who support their work. By giving their time volunteers are helping to make a diﬀerence to the lives of local children and families who are supported.

Volunteering at Haven House is completely flexible as they know that people have busy lives so giving just an hour, a couple of hours, or a day is sometimes all that’s needed. Volunteers are essential to their work so it’s vital they are given all the support and information they need. Support is needed in many ways, whether it's gardening, administration, helping out at events, there is something for everyone. Sylvia said “I have been helping out for ten years and started as our eldest son stayed at the hospice for respite care. I've done all sorts from driving, helping at events, picking up collection boxes and even helping in the shop. When I think of the help we received as a family at Haven House I would recommend getting involved to anyone.’ Volunteering at Food for Life Vrindavan (FFLV) is a great opportunity for people around the world to share their skills and help the charity that provides clothing, medical services and a better environment for the poorest of the poor. e school is open all year round with volunteers from July until March. ere is no fixed number of months or days one 2 2 JUNE 2016

can volunteer, it can be a day, a month, even six months or more. It’s best to avoid the summer months as it’s very difficult to work in the heat. ere are a range of volunteering roles on offer from assisting teachers, admin and support to helping out at the Cow Shed. Francesca, from Italy said “I have been volunteering at FFLV for a week and half now. I can just say that every day is like the first day. e children steal your heart with their positive look towards life and with their huge smiles. Teachers, employees and all the staff members are so gentle and willing to help that I cannot ask for anything more. I am supposed to help here, but with all this kindness they are helping me.” You can help Ash to help others – come along to the event or make a donation. n

SPRING, HOME MAINTENANCE AND BEING A TEA LADY WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

uring the winter we’re cosy at home but when the sun’s shining, we all want to get out and play. BUT - this is also when you notice your home merits urgent exterior maintenance and attention. Perhaps a glance up at the roof to see if winter storms might have loosened a tile or two, does the guttering merit some extra reinforcement? Chores normally include the front lawn, power jetting patios, weeding, etc. As one job finishes another one looms; it’s endless! Fortunately and living in Essex there are many trades personnel who can help us look after our homes/oﬃces etc. but there is something liberating about just doing it yourself. Very few of us actually have the time or even the inclination but knowing you don’t have to wait in and pray for a sunny day when the gardener’s due, can be a relief. As a lone female unfortunately when workmen are doing their jobs, I often feel as if I’m in a time warp of ‘oooooh would looooove a cup of tea’ then the obligatory half-an-hour tea break whilst hot drink is consumed. Workmen don’t expect men to supply copious amount of beverages but somehow if it’s a woman and you’re based from home, work isn’t perceived as a profession but a hobby without pressing deadlines, financial or corporate responsibility. I have tried to drop a hint: Urn of hot water, box of tea bags, jar of coﬀee and carton of milk strategically placed

on the kitchen worktop. I embellish with nourishing accompaniment of delicious bikkies including firm favourites such as Bourbons, Jammie Dodgers and chocolate digestives but sadly untouched by strangers’ hands despite the aesthetic appeal. Sadly, I am invariably ‘promoted’ from writer to tea lady but it doesn’t stop there; the crowning glory has to be when I received a request for a selection of sandwiches, fried eggs on toast or omelette with an excuse of ‘whatever’s easiest.’ Tempting though it is to say ‘duh… no’, I can’t help it but smile, fake enthusiasm and deliver… I succumb and hope the end result of their day’s work will be enhanced by a full belly and bladder. It would be easier to just do the job myself. So this weekend, it’s to B&Q to look for some paint, fencing, bricks to make a barbecue, patio cleaner and some rubber gloves to keep my hands soft and nails pristine!.. n

Concours of Elegance is bringing more than 1000 of the world’s most exclusive cars to Windsor Castle this September. the rare Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, the Disco Volante is hand-crafted from aluminium and carbon fibre. Sometimes the stories behind the cars are what makes them great, including the 1966 Mini Radford Mini de Ville GT in the Concours. Bought by Beatle, George Harrison, the car was painted with a psychedelic livery for the film Magical Mystery Tour. Also in the Main Concours is a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa Spider Valeo – the only factory-built convertible Testarossa in existence. It was especially built for Gianni Agnelli when he took over Fiat S.p.A in the ‘80s. A free-to-view section of the Concours of Elegance will see hundreds of cars from the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Bentley and more line Windsor Castle’s stunning Long Walk. More than 800 cars will be attending over the weekend of Concours of Elegance 2016, from the UK’s leading car clubs. Owners’ clubs from AC, Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Ferrari

and Lamborghini will join a host of others in showcasing their cars as part of a free-to-view area of the Concours on Windsor Castle’s incredible Long Walk. One of the most incredible sights coming to Windsor Castle in September, is a parade of every single Aston Martin ever produced. Organised with the help of the Aston Martin Owners’ Club, the parade will be arriving in to Windsor Castle at 9am on Saturday 3rd September, telling the complete Aston Martin story from the very beginnings to the latest DB11 model. The Club Trophy will feature hundreds of classic cars from across the UK and the best-of-the-best from the nation’s car clubs. Each club submits their individual Concours winners, which are then judged by a panel of Concours of Elegance experts, chaired by HRH Prince Michael of Kent and guest judges which in recent years have included David Gandy, Mark Knopfler, Jodie Kidd and others. 2016’s judging panel will be confirmed in the summer. The Club Trophy winner car is then entered in to the Concours of Elegance in 2016.

Some of the UK’s best classic car specialists will be exhibiting at the Concours of Elegance 2016, including Nicholas Mee, Frank Dale, Talacrest, Eagle GT, Fiskens, Duncan Hamilton and GTO Engineering. Displaying some of their most amazing models, the Specialists’ Showcase offers visitors to not only admire the cars on display but, also to buy them. Concours of Elegance has a host of exclusive partners for this year’s event, including AIG, Autoglym, Bentley, Ferrari, Jaguar Land Rover, Octane, RM Sotheby’s and the Royal Automobile Club. One of the primary aims of Concours of Elegance is to raise money for charity, and this year’s event will be generating funds for The Queen’s Choral Foundation, The Household Cavalry Foundation and Springfield Youth Club Hackney. So far, Concours of Elegance has raised more than £800,000 for its charities.

ver the years there has been a growing trend to not only rejuvenate the face and neck but to address specific body concerns using non surgical methods. People are aware that a smoother and more plumper face will not look right against an ageing chest area or wrinkly hands, as they are tell tale signs of the ageing process. 1. No matter how fit and active we are, or how carefully we watch what we eat, many of us have stubborn areas of fat that just will not go away. It may be your tummy, love handles, back, hips or even the dreaded cellulite. Liposuction works well for larger areas BUT can cause a great deal of pain and bruising. Laser lipolysis is an excellent alternative for anyone who doesn’t want the risks of surgery and has small areas of fat they want to get rid of. But a non surgical way called Mesotherapy has also been shown to be able to get rid of fat and cellulite on the stomach, thighs and buttocks as well as the dreaded bingo wings. Just like any treatment though, these treatments can not be seen as a quick fix, exercise and a sensible balanced diet must be adhered to, to help aid the results and more importantly maintain them. I combine Mesotherapy micro injections with body skin needling which contains fat burners, body contouring serums, draining and cellulite improving medication to help reshape and tone the areas of concern. 2. hen Mr and Mrs A walked into the in-toto Loughton showroom, they were looking for some design inspiration, and a designer who really understood their requirements. ey were particularly impressed with in-toto’s huge range of contemporary German engineered kitchens and the attention to design detail. e client was in the process of building an open plan kitchen/dining/living space, and specifically wanted to create a modern and impressive kitchen space. A space that would be suited to both entertaining and importantly be practical to work around their busy lifestyle. With an open-plan kitchen being one of the most important and used rooms in the house, it had to meet our client’s exacting requirements. In-toto’s state-of-the-art software was a great help in enabling the client to visualise the space in virtual reality during the design process.

A sophisticated on-trend grey and white colour scheme was chosen using our handle-less Celino Acrylic Ultra-High Gloss Graphite Metallic doors with stainless steel handrails. is was combined with white polished quartz worktops and integrated LED lighting completed the scheme. A sleek bank of tall units was grouped together, leaving ample open space around the cooking area. e tall bank included two Neﬀ Pyrolytic ovens, a combination microwave oven and a warming drawer, together with full size integrated fridge and freezer. e focal point of the room was the large two and a half metre island incorporating clever storage such as our extra wide 120cm drawers which can hold up to 50kg each. e island was designed with a breakfast bar area to enable it to be used as either a family space or social space for entertaining. Our dining dreams are getting grander, and a ‘proper’ dining room is becoming increasingly popular, as we rediscover an appetite for lingering over meals and savouring the opportunity to connect and socialise with loved ones.

lmost 60% of us prefer dining areas to be a separate room, and hankering for more formality appears to be in tune with a general change in attitude to mealtimes. TV dinners on the couch are falling out of favour, with 50% of parents making a ‘conscious effort’ to gather the family together for at least one meal a week. With increasingly busy lifestyles, the dining experience can be a welcome break from everyday stress and a chance to reconnect with family members and friends. Not only this, a separate room allows us to temporarily remove ourselves from the post-meal clean-up, which often looms over diners in open-plan kitchen and dining areas. Britain has also turned to the ‘big night in’ trend – inspiring a dinner party revival. We all wish to make more of dining, and a beautifully furnished space where we can fully enjoy the moment. If your dining area’s looking a bit dull, or your dining room rarely used, it’s time to revamp the space. No matter what’s on the menu, this should be a space to suit every occasion...

DOWNTON DINING Separate dining rooms are spaces where you can truly play with decor and conjure stately home grandeur (butler optional). This is no longer a room used only for special occasions - it’s the main gathering point for the

family and where people lavish a lot of care and attention getting the decor and furnishing right. They want dressers, a console table, wine racks, decorative lighting and accessories such as mirrors. It’s all about creating a stylish sanctuary which combines a cosseting, comfortable atmosphere - essential so you can enjoy a meal - with practicality and good storage. TIPS: Round tables generally suit smaller groups better, allowing for intimate gatherings. Avoid large vases or flower arrangements in the middle of a table, as they can form a barrier and discourage interaction. MODERN TASTE The essential ingredients for this recipe are streamlined tables and chairs and a pared-back approach, so clutter is minimal. Dining spaces are one of the hardest working zones in the home and have huge potential when it comes to style. You can opt for sophisticated glamour, think generous tables and overhanging pendant lighting in a combined kitchen/dining area which will make the eating area a stunning focal point. Bench seating has come a long way from the schoolroom and can take up less space than individual chairs and looks more modern. Just add cushions for essential comfort! TIP: Lighting is key - ensure it is sufficiently bright for everyday meals (or tasks like homework) but have dimmers to create atmosphere when required. Over-the-table pendant lights are brilliant for creating an instant wow factor, but don’t overlook floor lamps and table lamps around the room too, to create a more intimate feel. RUSTIC RETREAT Natural materials - especially wood - are ultra-fashionable and suit an informal setting. While we haven’t seen a huge push for one specific style, one thing which has become clear is that large dining spaces are back and here to stay. Eight to 12-seater tables are proving extremely popular, as people focus on creating a central hub for family and friends to gather. Bold, rich colours can make a separate dining area or room feel snug and cosy, while open plan areas can look stunning decorated in light, neutral tones, which blur the boundary between the indoors and outdoors, if they look out onto a garden. TIP: Establish which size table you need - it’s the main focus of the room and must be large enough to seat the required number of people, but too large and it will swamp a room. If space is an issue, opt for an extendable option for versatility.

Once upon a time, magnolia ruled in homes. The warm peachy shade was for years apparently the only choice for walls - until out of the shadows came grey.

t's an interior designer's murder mystery - did grey kill magnolia?" teases Kate Watson-Smyth, whose new book, Shades Of Grey, focuses on the power of a grey palette and explains in crystal clear fashion, spiced with a liberal dash of humour, how to use it stylishly. Fresh, modern and easy to match to other colours, it's perhaps hardly surprising that elegant, sophisticated grey is currently regarded as the perfect neutral. There's only one snag - deciding which shade to choose. As if the names for shades weren't baffling enough - take these, 'Elephant's Breath' is actually mid-grey, 'Blackened' is actually pale blue, bestselling 'Down Pipe' is dark grey while 'Clooney' (named after George, natch) is a bluey grey - the number on offer can induce paint chart paralysis. Fifty shades? Forget it Dulux recently expanded its range and now offers a mind-boggling 557 greys. "Grey's one of the hardest colours to get right when it comes to decorating your home. Get it wrong and the effect can be cold and energy-sapping, but if it's right it will look ultra-chic and modern, so although it takes a bit of mastering, it's well worth it," says Watson-Smyth. "To find the best shade, you need to consider a few key things, including which direction your room faces, the prevailing weather and the actual shade you like! Hopefully, by understanding grey, you'll be spared from buying a million sample pots, having walls daubed with confusing splashes of paint, or painting a whole room in the wrong shade and finding it resembles a prison cell! I've done it myself in my kitchen and had to repaint it. Just be warned, once you've gone grey, you'll be hooked." MAKING GREY WORK Grey's enduring popularity over the last decade is partly down to the cold, clear Northern light we enjoy in this country - put simply, grey just

looks good here - but always evaluate how much natural light a room gets and the direction it comes from. "For a small and dark north-facing room, don't fight the space by painting it a pale colour," says Watson-Smyth. "Instead, embrace its cosiness. Pick a strong shade of grey - as near to black as you dare - and use on every wall. The warm light of a south-facing room allows you more freedom of choice - pale greys can work as well as dark ones. East and westfacing rooms can be tricky, as the light will change from warm to cold as the sun moves across the sky. The secret is to look for a shade which will warm the cool and tone down the warm. For east-facing rooms, try greys with a blue or green base." A shade to consider, she suggests, is Little Greene's French Grey, a warm pale grey which won't dominate or darken a space. EXPERT VIEW "I started by painting one alcove in my house grey - it's a good way to experiment with a shade - and then fell in love with the colour and painted the whole house in dark grey. It's the best interiors move I ever made," enthuses interior designer Abigail Ahern. “To be safe, buy a sample pot and apply a generous amount in various places in a room, to see how the colour alters at different times of the day.” GREY MATTERS Always consider the effect that your existing furniture, textiles and flooring may have on a paint shade - no grey is ever seen in isolation. "Grey goes with all the other colours on the wheel, so you could throw in some pink until you feel like a change, and then maybe swap it for orange or yellow. It's probably more affordable to swap the accessories than the wall colour," suggests Watson-Smyth. "Be aware, though, that light will bounce off a bright pink sofa and turn walls slightly violet. Modern LEDs often throw out light with a blueish tinge, which will add to the pink purple effect. If you're concerned a room may look too plain painted all grey, use a textured wallpaper as a base to add interest. Skirting boards and radiators painted the same grey as walls will open up and enhance a space and painting a ceiling a paler shade of the wall colour, rather than white, can also be effective."
