BEWARE OF THE BOGUS TAX MAN

Graham Doubtfire, Tax Partner at Scrutton Bland highlights the latest criminal scheme being targeted at Essex residents.

ocal people have been targeted by unscrupulous conmen who are making bogus calls to householders in an attempt to defraud them out of their cash. e conmen are targeting individuals by phone. Claiming to be from HMRC, the criminals will then demand payment for supposed under-payment of tax, sometimes going back years and frighten the resident into handing over their money. ese latest scams are increasingly sophisticated in their approach, as the bogus callers appear to do their homework in advance of making the calls, gathering information on their victims in an attempt to make themselves look genuine. In many cases it is working. By threatening their victims with bogus court action or claiming that there is a warrant out for the victim for tax owed, the conmen are scaring their victims into handing over significant sums of money in order to avoid what their victims believe to be real legal action against them. Graham Doubtfire, Tax Partner at Scrutton Bland has seen this happen in his own area in Colchester, Essex, but says it is happening across the county: “We have certainly had clients receive calls of this nature, but thankfully they have called us to check before responding. e callers are very sophisticated in their approach and have targeted aﬄuent areas. ey will have gathered a lot of information before

making that call in order to convince the recipient. We are also concerned that with quarterly tax payments becoming due at the end of July, some clients are being sent phishing emails relating to those payments.” If you do receive an automated call claiming to be from HMRC, Graham’s advice is simple: “Put the phone down and contact your tax adviser who can help you verify whether or not HMRC are genuinely trying to contact you.” You can also check with HMRC online at www.gov.uk/topic/dealing-with-hmrc/phishing-scam s and if you use a mobile phone there are various free apps that you can use that will give an indication as to who is calling that has been logged by other users so you can block the number. Graham is one of Scrutton Bland’s Tax Partners working from their Colchester oﬃce, who brings extensive experience in dealing with the tax aﬀairs of high net worth individuals and their families to the firm. As he comments: “One of the great pleasures of my job is getting to know our clients, and understanding their financial needs and objectives. AWARD-WINNING VOLUNTEER TEAM

pping Forest District Museum and Lowewood Museum Collections Volunteers team have won the Collections Champion Award from SHARE Museums East. Andrew and Sarah Goodliﬀe, 2 volunteers, attended the celebration evening at Museum of East Anglian Life, Stowmarket on Wednesday 6 June to collect the award on behalf of the whole volunteering team. e team was 1 of 11 from the East of England to be shortlisted for this award.

Volunteers With only 1 full-time specialist Collections Oﬃcer the museum relies on the help and care the team of volunteers bring to the collection to fulfil its potential. In making their decision the judges considered the team’s passion, commitment, dedication and initiative. e core team of collections volunteers consists of 12 members. ey have 3 volunteers who work on the

garden and 2 front of house volunteers. At the moment there are a further 12 volunteers working on specialist projects and exhibitions; the largest cohort has recently been researching Hertfordshire man Stephen Warner for the current exhibition Stephen Warner: One Man’s Journey through War at Lowewood Museum.

Volunteers’ Week is week, 1–7 June, is Volunteers’ Week, a chance to thank all volunteers for their contribution to the service. is award, which the team were nominated for by Assistant Museums, Heritage and Culture Manager, Will O’Neill, is the perfect way to say thank you.

Also this summer, the City of London Corporation is celebrating 140 years of the Epping Forest Act of 1878, with a fascinating, free exhibition, ‘e Forest that was saved’ at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge and e View from 21 July to 30 September (open 10am – 5pm daily, except Mondays). is examines what Epping Forest looked like in the 1870s when it was saved from destruction. More than 40 historic photographs of the Forest and adjoining villages which were commissioned at the time of the Act are on display to tell the story. The line-up continues into the more modern era, too, with Jaguar’s 200mph ‘90s supercar, the XJ220 – one of just 281 built – and the 2018 Ferrari GTC4 Lusso ‘Tailor Made’. In fact, the standard of cars is so high that there is no judging panel – just securing a place in Hampton Court Palace is an enormous achievement itself. Instead, the owners of the cars themselves vote on which they deem to be the most elegant. In total, nearly 1000 cars will gather in the Palace grounds over the weekend, as a selection of vintage Jaguars competes for the Jaguar Trophy, and modern and classic Bentleys fight it out for the Bentley Trophy. The Royal Automobile Club Trophy sees a gathering of the UK’s finest car clubs, from Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Aston Martin, entering their finest vehicles for an opportunity to in a muchvaunted place among the Main Concours in the 2019 event. All of these cars provide a unique atmosphere for a whole host of luxury experiences at Concours of Elegance, including three-course luxury picnics from Tom Aikens. SUMMER FUN AT COOPERSALE HALL

e take a look at what’s coming up this summer at Coopersale Hall- an independent school for children aged 2 ½ to 11 located just a couple of minutes away from Epping station. With increased demand this year, more and more families are recognising the value of an independent education for their children. In addition to the classroom-based learning, the Summer Term is filled with educational visits, sports activities and performances. As with the other Oak-Tree Schools, Coopersale Hall gives its pupils a variety of learning experiences that take place outside the classroom. As part of Outdoor Pursuits week in May, pupils took part in a 3-day residential trip to Kingswood in Norfolk, where they took part in activities such as orienteering, archery and high-rope climbing. ey also attended Stubbers Activity Centre for sailing, paddle boarding and raft building. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy places particular importance on the extra-curricular programme and comments, “Our children are constantly given new experiences as we encourage them to try new activities. We provide around 40 clubs and activities at school and they enjoy learning new skills”. Pupils have been working hard recently preparing for a large school production of ‘Oliver’. Miss Lovejoy comments, “We provide many opportunities to develop our pupils’ creativity outside the classroom with several performances throughout the year. I’m delighted to see them flourish on stage - with their enthusiasm, talents and confidence the show is

sure to be a huge success!” e Summer Term sees sports days for pupils of all ages and the children are encouraged to compete for their Houses cheered on by their families and friends. All children take part and the events include sprinting, egg and spoon races, hurdles and even bean bag races. Miss Lovejoy says, “We are very lucky at Coopersale Hall to have such extensive grounds. e inter-House races promote healthy competition and the sports days often uncover talents that the children didn’t even know that they had.” Children in the Early Years take part in many summer activities, including their ‘Tiddly Prom’ performance to parents and sports day. is year they even celebrated the Royal Wedding with a tea party on the patio. “Our Kindergarten and Reception are involved in school events from the very beginning. ey build up their confidence trying new activities. ey are really excited when performing for the first time to their families, and love being a party of the school community from such a young age”, comments Miss Lovejoy. In July, Coopersale Hall holds an annual summer picnic on the field, with pupils performing to parents in gymnastics, music and dance. In between the showcases of talent, children can ride ponies, visit the mobile petting zoo, browse the numerous stalls, and have fun with the games and rides. is has always been a very busy afternoon and a lovely way to round oﬀ the year. his is Ascot’s prestige midsummer event and its showpiece race The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes has long been regarded as Europe’s premier midseason middle-distance championship race. Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Dancing Brave and Montjeu are just some of the luminous names to have lit up King George day in the past. This year, the King George Weekend will combine world-class Flat racing with colourful installations and entertainment with the racecourse’s famous lawns being transformed to pay homage to decades gone by since the meeting first took place in 1951. The Queen Anne Lawn will represent the 1950s and showcase all that is associated with this heart-warming era. From vintage regalia and floral decorations to afternoon tea accompanied by a barber shop quartet. The Stewards Lawn will be the perfect place for a fun festival feel, representing the energetic 1960s and 70s with racegoers being entertained by themed stilt walkers while enjoying retro cocktails in an iconic VW Beetle. Representing the vibrant 1980s and 90s, The Pavilion Lawn will become the Ascot Arcade. KEEPING COOL IN THE SUMMER

1. Wear very light cotton PJs. Although it’s tempting to throw oﬀ all covers and lay there as nature intended, the truth is that cotton pyjamas help the skin to breathe. Alternatively, cover yourself with a 100% cotton sheet. 2. Talking of sheets, apply a light mist of cool water. Obviously don’t soak but a gentle mist can cool down the sheets and therefore make going to bed more comfortable then slipping between sheets which feel like warm toast. 3. Whilst cooling your sheets, spray mist your curtains too. Any heat absorbed by them during the day can be cooled down by a light application of cool water. 4. Ice is also wonderful. If you put a bowl of ice in front of your fan, it will cool the room as it melts. Plus if during the night you’re still

struggling, put some ice into a cotton sock and then place against your forehead, feet, temples, wrists and ankles. 5. Sleeping in the hot weather is not easy. Another hot body next to yours probably won’t help either. So hot in bed doesn’t necessarily mean there needs to be another person!

6. Most of us have a television in our rooms and other electrical appliances. Plugs generate a lot of heat. If possible, turn oﬀ all electrical points. Every little bit helps. 7. Keeping blinds and curtains closed is a recommendation too. 8. If it’s too hot upstairs (heat rises) perhaps sleep downstairs as a last resort. 9. Keep plenty of water next to your bed so if you wake up thirsty – you have readily available water to help hydrate. Perhaps some cooled water in an ice box may help too. 10. A nice cool shower before going to bed…

last month entitled Take Five, I need more than five minutes to savour Captain Ross Poldark on a Sunday evening. Competition is rife though, he’s quite a heart throb with the masses. Episode 1 and we transfixed females, were blessed with a full 30 seconds as he appeared (topless) from the sea, wearing only his wet, beige breeches. In Camilla Long’s article (e Sunday Times, 17th June) her opening line states: “What do women really want on their televisions? If aliens landed tomorrow, they’d assume that all the human female desired was hundreds of fat-free documentaries about feminism and Poldark’s naked tits.” Well from this particular female’s perspective, I wouldn’t say that was all I desired but Poldark is certainly up there in the top 5. Caustic Camilla continues: “…for the gladiatorial pleasure of millions of hot-knickered ABC1s.” Well that’s a tad near the mark! Whether you have hot knickers or not, there’s no denying that Aidan Turner is certainly the personification of the male ideal. Not only is he handsome but he’s brave, strong and has the courage to stand up for what he believes to be right… Well it is fiction! And all this against the beautiful backdrop of the Cornish coast, waves lashing at the coastline and picture perfect, scenic views. Lust and desire thrives in this rural, natural setting; wanton gazes, stolen kisses (including licking of toes) plus naughty fumblings with forbidden fruits. Furtive meetings behind the rocks, heaving breasts bursting out of tight tops and sultry maidens on wind swept shores; their

Sunday now offers a wonderful respite from everything else which is the daily grind long-tussled hair, blowing in the wind. It’s a shame that I’m a few hundred years too late because I would be tempted to just drop everything, fill up my car with exorbitant petrol and take that long and arduous drive down to Cornwall, wearing only a tight dress and a long blonde wig. As the week takes its toll, the working days get longer as deadlines loom; but now there’s an oasis of Poldark on BBC1. Sunday now oﬀers a wonderful respite and until the fruition of this series, all my Sunday evenings are booked... Snug at home and oblivious of the world and its headlines. Curled up in front of the television with two tubs (mini) of Haagen Dazs ice-cream, a cup of freshly brewed tea and a perfumed, white fluﬀy blanket for added comfort. en for one whole blissful hour… Captain Poldark and ice-creams… are all mine… n

It is caused by alterations (mutations) in genes responsible for the development of the lymphatic system. e "faulty" genes cause the parts of the lymphatic system responsible for draining fluid to not develop properly or not work as they should. In my case, my lymphatic system in my left leg is affected, which causes it to swell. e condition is not life threatening, but it is unfortunately incurable. Lymphedema is thought to affect more than 200,000 people in the UK. Primary Lymphedema is rare and is thought to affect 1 in every 6,000 people. When I was first diagnosed my affected leg was double the size of my unaffected right leg. I have spent the best part of the last ten years managing my condition effectively, such as maintaining a healthy weight, regularly exercising, eating a good balanced diet and ensuring I wear my leg support garment every day. As a result, today my condition is much improved; however there is still an apparent difference in size. Nonetheless, when I was first diagnosed I immediately lost my self-identity and confidence, became very depressed and felt that because of my diagnosis I could no longer be the stylish, unique looking young woman I once was. Overtime, I restored my self-belief and I am happy to say I am positively living with my condition. I live a totally normal life, I work and I am a Mummy to a two year old boy. Being pregnant

and having lymphedema was a big challenge and you just have to expect that your affected limbs are going to swell up. I had to make sure I rested where possible. My advice would be if you are planning a pregnancy try and plan it so you reach your last trimester in the winter months. Wear your support garments every day, try to eat as healthy as you can I know this can be very difficult through pregnancy as most of my pregnancy I wanted to eat everything in sight. Drink lots of water and try and exercise, I found swimming the best form of exercise and pregnancy yoga as yoga works in three ways to increase the flow of lymph and relieve lymphatic congestion. Primary Lymphedema is rare and therefore there is still I think little public knowledge about the condition. I would like to inspire others living with the condition and I will hopefully be starting my blog primarily aimed at women and young girls who have lost self-confidence, particularly in their appearance. I want to show that despite the change in body shape this does not need to affect your body image and self-esteem in a negative way. I have found various ways to wear clothes on trend and I would like to share this with people. e blog would also contain information on how to effectively manage the condition, from my experience and motivational videos to support people who have recently been diagnosed. HOW PARENTS CAN IDENTIFY WHEN A CHILD SHOULD SEE A SPECIALIST In Conversation With Mr. Kumar – ENT Surgeon WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

r. Gaurav Kumar (ENT Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon) is a highly revered surgeon who has successfully performed over 1000

ear surgeries. He is locally based at Roding and Brentwood Spire Hospitals and the Nuﬃeld Health in Brentwood. As one of the very few consultants who use Lasers and Endoscope (for certain procedures) he is respected for his ability to minimise discomfort whilst facilitating a fast recovery. Michelle: As a respected and locally based ENT surgeon, I have read that other surgeons refer complex ear cases to you. Why is that? Mr. Kumar It is predominantly because of the amount of surgeries that I have performed and my experience with Lasers and Endoscope in the ear. Very few surgeons are using this method but it has an outstanding safety record and is far less invasive. Michelle: is would be particularly good with children. Mr. Kumar: Yes indeed. No parent likes to see their child in discomfort and surgery is always a worry for them, even if a minor and routine procedure. Michelle: In your experience, what is the most common ENT surgical procedure necessary for children and why? Mr. Kumar: Most parents consult me because they are worried about their children. It maybe they can’t hear properly, have frequent sore throats, loud snoring and other problems. Michelle: I know glue ear is a common childhood problem. What signs should parents or teachers look out for? Mr. Kumar: Normally the child will have diﬃculty hearing. Sometimes parents may think

the child is ignoring them or a teacher may feel the child is not listening and they are falling behind in their school work. In any scenario where there is a possibility a child cannot hear properly, before pursuing any other course of action, it is worth having a specialist to make a thorough check-up. Michelle: What’s the recovery time for Grommets for glue ear? Mr. Kumar: It’s only a few days, perhaps 2 to 3 days. It’s minor procedure and for the child and even the parents, this can be life-changing. Michelle: I know that both my children needed their tonsils and adenoids removed which I think is still quite common. What is the recovery from a tonsillectomy using the latest technology? Mr. Kumar: Again, it is a short recovery. Normally 10 days should be suﬃcient. Removal of adenoids and tonsils used to be a more complicated procedure but it’s far simpler now with new coblation technology. Michelle: What else is a major concern for parents? Mr. Kumar: Sleep disorders. If a child is noisy breathing at night and parents can hear loud noises such as choking or loud snoring. is should never be ignored. ere can be various reasons for the problem such as being overweight, enlarged tonsils or adenoids but whatever the cause, it must be checked out and a proper diagnosis made. It is not recommended to self-diagnose or ignore these symptoms. With the summer holidays now imminent, it is a particularly good time to rectify a problem before going back or starting school. Yet still have plenty of time left for holidays and recreational fun. n
