he famous, frequently quoted and memorable opening few lines to Charles Dickens’ book could very much sum up the mood in today’s current political and UK/France climate. e book is set in pre/during French Revolution and just recently, we had the gilets jaunes protesting in France and defiantly waving the French Tricolour. Here in Blighty – we’re still debating the quandary that’s BREXIT and openly a country that’s very much divided on this point. As we near the end of 2018 in a state of such unrest, can we confidently know what will happen next year? Will 2019 oﬀer respite from these turbulent times and will we eventually ease into a comfortable BREXIT and amicably finalise the EU/UK divorce bill? Personally, I don’t know of any divorce that suited both parties so am sure, the first quarter of 2019 will continue with the BREXIT details that most of us feel are well past their Sell By Date. As I type this feature, eresa May has just won the Confidence Vote but I wonder, is it because she is seriously backed by the 200 Conservative MPs who voted for her… Or that nobody else wants the job despite some protestations to the contrary.

So what beckons for 2019? On a lighter note, Megan is due to have a baby! at has to the ultimate in light relief. Speculation is the date could coincide with BREXIT day on 29th March. What will dominate the headlines… Baby or BREXIT? For the rest of us, hopefully 2019 will be a year in which most of us will set out goals that are achievable and bring us success, whether personally and/or professionally. If we have good health – we have wealth. If we all support some charitable cause, the world is a better place. To love ourselves, our families, treat our friends with respect and retain high ethical standards in our work place and also with consideration for the environment. Does it need to be more complicated than that? Personally, I don’t think so but that’s just my opinion.

ne of the most fiendishly complicated taxes is currently under the spotlight. Earlier this year Chancellor Phillip Hammond ordered a review of Inheritance Tax (commonly known as IHT) and the first of two reports on IHT has just been published. Over 3,500 members of the public contributed to the 80-page report, which concludes that IHT “appears to be the most uniquely unpopular tax”. Many commented on the distress IHT form filling can cause as people try to cope with complex paperwork in the wake of the death of a loved one. “I still have nightmares about it” said one contributor, and another commented: “the burden of form-filling is a tax in itself”. 38% of the report’s respondents recalled spending 50 hours or more on IHT paperwork, and two thirds said they had had to provide “a significant amount of information” even though they didn’t need to pay any Inheritance Tax at the end of the process.

WHO HAS TO PAY IHT? After a person dies, IHT is payable at a rate of 40% on the value of their assets above a threshold of £325,000. Assets are classified as: • Investments and savings • Property* • Cash • Cars and other vehicles • Life insurance payouts *An IHT exception for a family home allowance is being introduced in stages up to 2020. is means that married couples will be able to use their

combined allowance to pass on their property, up to a value of £1 million, to their direct descendants. In the current tax year (2018-19) there is an additional £125,000 allowance, this goes up to £150,000 in 2019-20 and £175,000 in 2020-21. Graham Doubtfire, Tax Partner at Scrutton Bland, commented “is legislation has numerous traps to deny the additional relief. During a recent review for a couple with a modest level of assets, and a common arrangement within their Wills, we identified £140,000 of Inheritance Tax savings just by clarifying to whom their assets would be directed on the second death”. e report urges a rethink of IHT procedures, which includes: • a digital option for submitting IHT and probate forms • reducing the volume of information which needs to be sent to HMRC for simple estates • issuing receipts for information and payments received • giving clearer guidelines for executors of wills • standardising the procedures for financial institutions (such as banks) releasing assets A second report, looking at the structure of the IHT system will be published in Spring 2019, after which time it is hoped that Mr Hammond will take notice of these reports (which after all he commissioned) and make some improvements to simplify the rules – although it is unlikely that these changes will be implemented until at least 2020. n

LET’S TALK KINDERGARTEN

raeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton make up the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group of Schools. All four schools have well-established and popular Kindergartens, catering for children from 2½ years. We talk to Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of e Oak-Tree Schools, about the four excellent Kindergartens. Q: What are the benefits of the Oak-Tree Schools taking children so young? A: As many children have been with us since 2½ or 3 years old, we can provide continuity in their education in familiar surroundings by staﬀ who know them well. e progression from each stage to the next is well supported to ensure that the pupils’ education is continually enhanced. Q: What are the benefits of attending the Oak-Tree Kindergartens rather than a local nursery? A: Despite their young ages, the emphasis in our Kindergartens is on the children’s learning. e curriculum is based around the Early Learning Goals, but is enriched with a wide range of additional activities including Music, Computing and PE lessons; French and Drama workshops; assemblies, performances, trips and outings. Being attached to schools we have many subject specialists at our disposal. Our children have excellent relationships with their dedicated keyworkers, who are responsible for monitoring their progress and development. Observations are made electronically and evidence is emailed home regularly. e children often exceed their expected levels of progress. provision of space, large classrooms and dedicated outside learning areas that allow for ‘free flow’ to encourage creativity. Q: What positive feedback have you had recently about the individual schools? A: At Braeside the Kindergarten children now benefit from a spacious new area that has been doubled in size as part of a recent extensive programme of improvements. e dedicated new outside area enables learning to take place effectively both inside and outside the classroom. ese developments have seen the Kindergarten double in size from this Spring Term. Coopersale Hall’s Kindergartens have purpose-built large classrooms and extensive grounds with play equipment for the younger children. As with all Oak-Tree Schools, the wrap-around care is very popular with parents looking to balance work and children’s school lives. Breakfast Club runs from 7.30am each morning and the Teatime Club runs until 6pm. At Normanhurst the Kindergarten areas were recently redeveloped to create dedicated areas for the younger children. Feedback has been excellent about children continuing their educational journey from Kindergarten up through the school to age 16, as staff and pupils at all levels have outstanding relationships that help with the children’s personal development. Current and prospective parents at Oaklands have been positive about the forthcoming Kindergarten developments. e new flexible sessions in Kindergarten have been very appealing to parents of the youngest children and have allowed for more choice. e Kindergartens expanded slightly from September 2018 and the school can now offer more places to local families. n

WHERE DO YOU START? • Understand your target audience • Research your competitors and ideally, prepare a chart of your company by comparison • Be sure and clear about your USP, branding and mission statement • Consider your overall plan and appropriate budget • Brainstorm ideas and develop a truly unique approach to engage your audience • Compile a report with a strategic plan and objective • Discuss with your team or business partners, so everybody can work collectively • With respect to the content, write in a professional format that is appropriate to the medium. For example how you would write a leaflet is very different to a website • Be realistic with the time a potential reader would invest to look at your material. For a website, readers will normally only allocate three seconds before deciding to continue reading or to click out • Consider all your marketing material and how it will ensure a drive of traffic to your website or preferably a call to your office or mobile, to discuss business • Social media. Facebook works for certain industries, LinkedIn appeals more to the professionals but Instagram is popular on all levels. YOUTUBE is hit more often than Google so wherever possible – a video gives you another inroad to your target audience. • If using SEO – the identification of your keywords and their incorporation into the content can be a powerful tool. Content should be genuine and informative. If the words are blatant SEO – Google will know… And they won’t like it!

In order to really boost traﬃc to your website, it is essential to have marketing material such as brochures and leaflets and to regularly post blogs via your website and also social media. It is important to be seen as a trusted source of information who is prepared to share their knowledge. …AND THE ROI… Keep track of your content marketing campaigns and record the ROI. (Return on Investment). All marketing material should have a purpose and its results tracked. If it’s good it will be shared, found on the internet and circulated. Monitoring success will help you to plan future campaigns. e internet facilitates multiple opportunities however it is worth considering what is appropriate, rather than wasting precious time and money on anything and everything. Be selective in order to maximise the value of your time and budget. Finally content has to be well-written. How and what you write is indicative of the calibre of your product or service so take ample time to draft, thoroughly edit (allow at least two/three versions) before the final proof. Also consider the appropriate word count necessary to complement the graphics and design. e aesthetics are your company’s first, visual impression and opportunity for an impact. With all this time and eﬀort, you want it to be perfect and you would also like some great results and more business… n

ixty years ago – on 12 January 1959 - a man with an unstoppable dream invented a sound that would be remembered forever. Motown the Musical follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records.
