TAXING TIMES AHEAD FOR FAMILIES
I
am often asked why I am so passionate about tax planning, and the reason for that is I really enjoy getting to know people and their families. Paying tax is a fact of life, but helping clients to reduce the amount of tax they pay means that they can enjoy more of the income and wealth they work hard to create. Whilst many people will be aware that they have a personal allowance, I am always surprised by the number of clients I come across who are unaware of the multitude of other tax allowances that are available. For the tax year ending 5 April 2017, we have seen a major shift in the tax legislation and allowances available. Similarly, when I talk to business owners and we look at how a family’s income can be structured more tax efficiently, they are often amazed that it is possible to generate income of over £3,500 per month without any personal taxes arising. In fact it is possible to generate income from the family business of £44,000 per annum without any personal tax liability. is is just one of the many advantages available if you know where to look. Tax is one of those areas where keeping astute could not only save you money, but is critical to preventing fines or penalties. Even as tax professionals we need to ensure that we are keeping up to date and aware of all the changes in legislation. All too often when I meet a new client they are unaware that they have a personal responsibility to be informed of their own tax liabilities and must therefore notify HM Revenue & Customs that they have to complete a Tax Return. Many people are under the misapprehension that if they need to file a Tax Return, HM Revenue & Customs will automatically write to them and very often that is not the case. HM Revenue & Customs have dramatically changed the way interest and dividends are taxed in the current

year, with bank interest being paid without any tax deducted at source and dividends now carrying no tax credit. Taxpayers who rely on their investment income to supplement their ongoing income, or who use interest and dividends to reinvest in their investment portfolio, could find that whilst previously they have not been required to file a Tax Return they may now have to do so (are you confused yet?) Whilst there are some allowances available to remove some interest income and dividend income from the tax net, these allowances are very modest by modern standards and taxpayers who have historically been non taxpayers may now have to account for the tax due on the interest and dividend income by completing Tax Returns. Tax legislation is incredibly complex and the role of a tax adviser is to ensure that not only their clients pay the right amount of tax, but also that they are making full use of the allowances and reliefs available. HM Revenue & Customs are able to charge tax geared penalties if a tax payer does not pay the right amount of tax and these can be particularly severe where a taxpayer takes no action. If you are not sure about your tax liabilities, or how to deal with them you should seek professional advice sooner rather than later. n

NEW LOWER KINDERGARTEN ANNOUNCED AT BRAESIDE Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill has recently opened a new Lower Kindergarten.
F
ollowing in the footsteps of its sister schools Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton, Braeside’s Early Years Foundation Stage now welcomes children from 2½ years. Children are able to attend on a part-time or full-time basis during the two Kindergarten Years. Headmistress Claire Osborn is pleased with how the school is developing; “e children all flourish in our Early Years. ey form excellent relationships with each other and the staff and often exceed their expected levels of progress. Braeside provides a happy and secure environment in which to learn and our pupils enjoy their time with us. Being an ‘all through’ school, we are able to enrich the core curriculum with a wide range of specialist activities including Music, ICT and PE lessons, French and Drama workshops, assemblies, performances, trips and outings”. e Kindergarten children now benefit from a spacious new area that has been doubled in size as part of the extensive programme of improvements carried out over the summer break. e dedicated new outside learning area that has been enlarged, reshaped and resurfaced to enable learning to take place effectively both inside and outside the classroom. Mrs Osborn adds, “ese developments have been hugely popular with the parents. e children are enjoying their new space and parents appreciate the colourful new environment. With our full wrap-around care, parents are finding it easier to balance work and their children’s school lives.

Our Breakfast Club runs from 7.30am each morning and the After-School Club runs until 6pm”. Matthew Hagger, Managing Principal of the Oak-Tree Group, has been overseeing a period of transformation at Braeside; “is has been an incredibly busy year with considerable investment benefitting all of the Braeside pupils. At the Juniors in Palmerston Road we’ve renovated two entire floors of the main building, installed a new access to the rear and built an extension to the school hall to accommodate a servery for lunches. e kitchens that are currently being built at the Seniors will enable us to provide freshly cooked lunches to all children from Lower Kindergarten to Year 11”. e school maintains that there are many benefits from joining an ‘all-through’ school such as Braeside. Mr Hagger continues, “Many of the pupils have been at Braeside since they were very young and feel a real sense of belonging and support. We understand the educational needs of the children throughout their education and we provide an extremely high ratio of staff to pupils at every stage. In our Kindergarten each child has a dedicated Key Worker responsible for monitoring their progress and development, which is recorded for parents to see at any time”. n

he passing of the seasons make Epping Forest an ever-changing landscape and as the final leaves fall from the trees and the temperature drops, a woodland winter wonderland awaits. peaking to the School Business Manager Susan Juffs over a coffee, we discussed the school, its mission statement and working with local children and their parents.
Michelle: How long have you been working at the school and what continues to inspire you? Susan: I joined the school in 2003 and love the job satisfaction. e whole team work closely together and the school feels like an extension of family. Michelle: Do you have a personal connection? Susan: Yes. My daughter attended the school so I am also able to understand from a parent’s perspective the school’s ideals and how we achieve them. e girls grow into confident young women with a great overall knowledge of many subjects in addition to the academic. ey develop sports, music and performance skills plus through the school ethos, we help their spiritual development and enhance a sense of social responsibility and community. Michelle: How do the older children look after the new three years old girls when they first join the Nursery? Susan: We have a system where our Prep 4 (Year 6) girls are Prefects and they have a number of responsibilities including looking after the younger classes at play and lunch times. As we are a small school, the children all know and look out for one another. ere’s a strong sense of camaraderie amongst the girls. 1 6 DECEMBER 2016
Michelle: It sounds as if the school is very caring and from what I have seen, they all look very happy but what about the academic results? Susan: In the school’s prospectus we outline the destinations of our Prep 4 girls every year and details of offered places and scholarships. We do care and wherever possible, like to keep in touch and hear from the girls with respect to their progress through their secondary school life. Most girls do keep in contact to tell us how they are faring. We love to hear about their successes, particularly because we know that St. Joseph’s has played a formative part in their development. Michelle: You mentioned your daughter went to St. Joseph’s. Are there many children at the school whose mothers also attended? Susan: Yes. We have children whose mothers attended the school and we also have a number of siblings. St. Joseph’s is very much a family affair and in one case, a mother had actually kept her hat which her daughter then wore! We really have been educating families for generations…n

DOING ‘PORRIDGE’ RAISES MONEY FOR CHARITY

s Christmas approaches, most people consider worthwhile charities for important donations.
As part of their contribution, five brave souls were prepared to be ‘locked up in a Court House’ in Shoreditch and in partnership with YBC (Your Business Community) to raise money for Transitions charity. Transitions UK is a new and exciting charity set up to address the needs of a lost generation of young people, including those with disabilities and special needs, young people leaving care, those with mental health or emotional needs and those at risk of exclusion and offending. Transitions UK provides support that changes lives and at this stage is entirely reliant on public support to carry out their great work. Arriving at 10 a.m. the five ‘convicts’ were given their striped clothes, mobile, laptop and told they would not be allowed to leave until they had each raised £500.00. Ron Overton, the chief executive of Transitions UK, dressed up as the policeman. Our own designer from the Essex series of Life magazines, Angie Phillips was one of the convicts: “We didn’t really know what to expect - luckily it wasn’t as basic as we had dreaded; the cells were the real ones and when the doors were shut it was definitely sound proof inside! e Krays were among some of the more infamous residents as well as Dick Turpin. It was certainly an experience and social media was my key to drumming up donations. It created a lot of interest and laughs!” 1 8 DECEMBER 2016

We raised nearly £2,000.” Ron Overton - Chief Executive In Spring 2017 Transitions will be launching the Aspire Project which will support 20-25 young people who are at risk of offending or exclusion across Hertfordshire. e project is supported and endorsed by David Lloyd, Police and Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire. ere is huge need to provide support for young people who are moving into poor patterns of behaviour or developing unhelpful relationships. e project provides volunteer mentoring, alternative activities and positive role models. A significant development will be the involvement of police cadets as part of the volunteer force. n

C
hristmas is such a wonderful time of the year. It’s an annual highlight that merges cultural and religious festivities with tradition and joy.
e commercial aspect is now in full swing. e John Lewis advert, the glitzy M&S equivalent, Waitrose, even Aldi and Morrisons have upped their game to get onto the Christmas gravy train… However it never fails to amaze me just how much time and effort is spent by the corporate giants on just one meal. Despite the advertisements displaying tables filled to capacity, I can’t help but think that to consume that amount, would lead to at least indigestion and at worst a heart attack! And of course, an obvious and unwanted weight gain… Plus of course there are the gifts. It is so out of control that you feel that unless you have virtually bankrupted yourself, you haven’t given enough. Christmas takes abundance to unbridled excess and is so far removed from its religious significance that it’s at times, barely recognisable. Yet despite my sounding a tad humbug, I do enjoy Christmas; sharing the day with family and friends, making a normal sized, home-cooked that everybody can enjoy without feeling nauseous. So whilst most of us savour and slumber, there are so many more people who are less fortunate. Again, the television is filled with adverts of desperate children and animals. When you give a friend or stranger a gift, the pleasure we have in the process of giving surpasses the experience to receive. So in keeping with kindness and generosity, Christmas can only really be maximised if in some way, small or large, others have benefitted from unexpected gestures of goodwill.

As Christmas approaches, so does Chanukah too on 24th December and many families have lost everything. One established charity that has set up a special appeal is Yad Ezra V’Shulamit. Donations can be given via their website: www.yadezra.net. e Christmas Rotary Club of Roding have just celebrated their 20th year of supplying 500 empty shoe boxes to St Anthony's primary School in Woodford. ese are filled by the pupils then distributed all over the world to children in need. rriving at Debbie Douglas’ beautiful home, her gorgeous dogs herald my arrival before Debbie appears in the doorway. She looks harassed and busy but so dedicated to support these vulnerable animals, despite her heavy schedule and filming commitments, she still ensures time for this interview.
Debbie and her dogs Debbie’s life is clearly about caring for others and she is animated about her affection for her children, the foster children and all creatures great and small. We talk about family, dogs, dog-walking, vulnerable people and why she’s so committed to this project. When a woman (as generally it’s a woman) is abused, it takes courage to leave the family home with the children. is is made especially worse if a dog is involved. Most refuges aren’t able to accept animals and it’s traumatic enough for the children to leave the home, let alone a pet, especially if the perpetrator threatens the dog’s wellbeing and safety. Debbie states that her and Carol (Wright) are absolutely committed to their support for anyone escaping domestic abuse, and then in turn, the family pet should also be provided safety in a loving home too. e volunteer foster dog parents are carefully selected so that when a dog is deemed at risk, the team at Freedom Project (run by e Dogs Trust) will then become involved to help the pet. Wherever possible if a dog has lived with a family, they will look for a similar environment for the dog’s temporary respite. When the abused family are rehoused and settled, they are reunited with their pet which is always an 2 2 DECEMBER 2016
emotional and wonderful experience. A WINNING PICTURE Christine Baker, Christen Media, reports on one student’s journey from the very first Seasons Art Class held in January 2015. Lindsey Julian lives in Chingford. She said “When I first saw the advert for the Art Class I decided right away to get back to a subject I loved while doing ‘A’ level art at school.” It was a match made in heaven as Lindsey gained more confidence during each course and earlier this year decided to submit her painting of a kingfisher for exhibition at e View, next to the historic Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge in Chingford. Little did she know that other local artists voted it a hit. Lindsey took top prize and won art vouchers to the value of £30. “I was gobsmacked” said Lindsey. “I didn’t realise people voted and not only that someone wanted to buy it so I took home £100 as well!” Since the summer exhibition Lindsey has been commissioned to paint a poppy in water colour and been approached to produce more pictures of the kingfisher. “I am so pleased to still be under the watchful eye of Adelaine and Jim. I am seriously thinking of having my own website where I can show my work and just see what happens.” “I owe it all to them as they have nurtured me along the way and given me the confidence to have a go at new things. 2 4 DECEMBER 2016

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT A doctor takes a patient's medical and family historry ry, asks questions about their lifestyle (how active they are and whether they smok smoke, etc), listens to their heart and lungs, and takes their blood pressure and pulse. "If there's a significant degree of clinical suspicion that a problem m could be cardiac, the NHS encourages GPPss to do a fast-track referral refer to a caardiology clinic. BLOOD TESTS Blood tests are used in relation to a number of hear art conditions, the most common being cardiac enzyme tests, which help sho ow if the heart muscle is damaged; full blood count, which measures different types of blood cells and can show w if there's an infection, and thyroid function tests, which detect an under or overactive thyroid, which can be linked to heart palpitations or a very slow or fast heart rate. ECG An electro ocardiogram (ECG) records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart, viaa electrodes attached to the arms, legs and chest with small stickkyy patches. Thee test can help detect problems with the heart rate and show if a patient is havving a heart attack, or has already had one. An ECG can also show if the heart iss enlarged. However, a normal ECG doesn't rule out significant coronarryy hear heaart disease and other tests may be needed, such as a coronarryy angiogram. ECHOC CARDIOGRAM An echocardiogram ardiogram - also known as an echo - uses sound waves to create a detailed piccture of the heart, similar to ultrasound scans. A probe is moved over the skin n of the chest, giving off pulses of high frequency sound waves which pass through the skin and 'echo' against the heart structures, reflecting them as movving pictures. The echo o also gives information about the heart's function and pumping action. It can n be useful affter ter recent heart attacks or heart failure, and is also used to assess ss people with heart valve problems or congenital heart disease. MRI SCAN A cardiac MRI is used to view the heart's structure and assess how well it's pumping, so o it's useful for checking structural problems including congenital heart diseasee, wear and tear of the valves, heart damage affter ter a hear heart attack, and the amo ount of healthy heart muscle if you have heart failure. MRI scans can also lookk at the heart's blood supply and related conditions, such as angina and coronarryy heart disease. HOW TO BEAT THE CHRISTMAS STRESS SHOWING ON YOUR SKIN WITH FRANCES FURLONG
T
his time of year we can feel the excitement building to Christmas, with parties to attend and busy shopping trips, it can leave us feeling and looking exhausted! Here are some tips and ideas to help alleviate some stress. EAT WELL - It can be tempting to snack on foods high in sugar when the weather is colder and we want a quick energy boost. Unfortunately this will lead to increasing blood sugar levels.Remember when our levels suddenly dip again, we’re left craving another sugary pick-me-up or stimulant such as caffeine. - Try to stick to regular meals containing healthy proteins, such as oily fish, grass-fed meats or lentils. If you feel hungry between meals reach for protein rich snacks such as homemade energy balls, houmous and vegetable sticks or simply some dried fruits and nuts. TIRED WASHED OUT COMPLEXION - All the extra stress, both at work and at home, inevitably takes its toll on one’s appearance. Lifeless dull skin, dark shadows under the eyes become even more apparent. Common symptoms including spots, psoriasis, eczema, dry skin and, if you’re already run down, cold sores, dandruff, overtly greasy or dry hair - and even hair loss can all affect you badly at this time of year. STRESS AND EXHAUSTION - e temptation to reach for a pick me up in the form of a mini Toblerone or a glass of wine. Plus it’s dark at 3.30pm, which I find leads to carb consumption. Why does stress affect our skin so badly? Firstly, hormones. Being under pressure increases the production of cortisol, one of the functions of which is to suppress the immune system (that’s why we use hydrocortisone to stop allergic reactions). - Cortisol can also lead to skin ageing, as it weakens the elastin and collagen structures within the skin. Hence that dull, lacklustre appearance that you get when you’ve had a succession of late nights in a row. Hormones, too, are the culprit in stress-related hair loss. is used to be a mostly male affliction; but since we women decided, quite reasonably, that it was time for us to have a go at running things, more and more women have started losing their hair through stress. Stress results in waves of androgens, males hormones that have a deleterious effect on our hair follicles and shorten their life-cycle, initially causing thinning and eventually, over time, the death of the follicle. -Try Aromatherapy oil baths to soothe the body and mind, massage, reflexology, reiki and meditation can all help you to recharge. - Invest in a good eye cream to suit your skin like Inspira eye care cream, soft and luxurious feel. Invest in a good concealer to help the shadows under the eyes also. - Take vitamin D tablets every am on waking to help the blues and B12 to fight fatigue and stress.

A snug bedroom is the perfect place to retreat to on cold winter nights. Even the most hale and hearty types have surely been tempted to linger under the bedcovers, or take a 'duvet day' in these freezing, snowy times. After all, our natural reaction when cold winds blow outside is to stay where we feel snug and safe, and the ultimate retreat is our bedroom.

ut you're missing a trick if you're only using your bedroom for snoozing and loving, as ideally this space should also be a stylish sanctuary where it's easy to relax and unwind. You can really let your imagination take flight here with decoration and furnishing as it's the perfect private location for decor ideas or fantasies that may not be practical to indulge in anywhere else in the home. If you're uncomfortably aware your bedroom's not matching up to your interior dreams, there couldn't be a better time for a revamp as you can plunder the sales for bargains in beds and bedding. Before you spend though, try to have a concept of the room and the effect you desire. There's a lot of talk about getting the 'wow' factor for rooms, but in bedrooms you're really seeking the 'aaah' factor’ "That means creating a room to your taste which envelops you as soon you walk in. You should immediately feel your shoulders drop as you shed tension and realise that this is where you can truly be yourself and unwind. Bedroom decor and furnishings can, with a little thought, be versatile enough suit all seasons. You don't have to play it safe with neutrals but bear in mind that even if you love dark, closeting colours and heavy fabrics in
the winter you might find them overpowering on bright, sunny days. A bed's obviously a focal point, and currently an oversized, padded headboard is fashionable for contemporary beds, but you will see a trend for functional headboards which double as storage or a place to display photos or treasured items. Four posters are the ultimate boaster bed, while the more rustic or ornate metal bedsteads are still hugely popular. But be aware that you need to stack this style of bed with oversized cushions, so you're not lounging back against a hard metal frame. At the end of the day, it's the finishing touches that will turn a bedroom into the ultimate personal comfort zone‌layer a bed with a throw, a runner, and cushions and bolsters in soft-to-thetouch fabrics, and make space for an easy chair and small table where you can sit and daydream. To avoid any more rude awakenings choose a dreamy new look for your bedroom that will turn it into a beautiful sanctuary. ELEGANT RETREAT This should be a sophisticated room where the decor is understated and restful and the overall effect is light and airy. Use soft paint colours on walls for a soothing atmosphere, like soft blues and lilacs. Monochrome is on trend and its classic purity would be an ideal partner for this style. Alternatively, take a more funky, masculine approach with the black, white and citrus yellow. GLAMOROUS BOUDOIR Don't spare the colour and texture in this room, because it demands a full-on approach so that it's indulgent, luxurious and opulent. Rich berry colours, reds, plums and purples are ideal for a space that cocoons and comforts.Have this bedroom as a gorgeous retreat, purely for rest and relaxation. There's no room here for a home office or ugly technology. Add extra feel-good factor to the bed by using sumptuous bedspreads and throws made of silk or faux fur. And have dimmer switches and lamps so you can easily lower the lights for intimacy.

ou just know when you’ve found ‘the one’. Supportive, and always there for you when you need comfort, a snuggle or just to relax. I’m not talking about a partner - at least, not a human one, but the sometimes more tricky matter of getting the right seating partner; a sofa. But with so much to consider, from size through to shape and colour, never mind sorting through a seemingly endless array of ranges, finding the perfect match for you and your home can be daunting. People often go to enormous lengths choosing a sofa, not just because this is a costly item, but also because it’s the most important piece of furniture in a living room. It can literally make or break the look of a setting. A lot of life happens on a sofa, so it’s worth taking time to find ‘the one’. Follow the experts’ tips for a seat-match made in heaven... GET THE MEASURE I’m a fan of sofas which are big enough to lounge around on and super comfy, with deeper seat cushions than average, so they’re inviting to curl up on. Top Tips: Measure your room before shopping, so you choose a sofa to fit the space and scale of the room. When you have one in mind, make a paper template of it and lay it out in the room to help you visualise the reality of its size, as display sofas always look smaller in large showrooms. Ensure it will fit, especially if there are awkward stairs or narrow doorways, although bolt-on arms or removable legs are solutions if space is tight. Style Guide: Leather sofas are a big trend, as they’re durable and practical and easy to clean. CHECK OUT PATTERN Don’t be afraid to be adventurous and really push the boundaries when it comes to choosing seating - it’s outdated to pick a matching sofa, armchair and footstool. Create an eclectic, customised look by mixing colours and patterns, so a sofa upholstered in a plain fabric could be paired with a leather armchair, or a patterned footstool.
Top Tips: Don’t be led purely by design. Comfort is key, so try out a few before you decide. For instance, deep-seated sofas can be uncomfortable for short people, while those who love a squashy sofa for snoozing and sprawling will struggle with a lean, low-backed contemporary model. Style Guide: People are becoming more adventurous in their decor, so clashing statement patterns and bold colours are starring. Pair a sofa with a bold fabric design with a plain backdrop, or if you love bold wallpapers, create a feature wall first and then match the sofa’s colour to the wall. PLUMP FOR LOVE A sofa, like a bed, is one of the few home items used daily and the centrepiece of a living area, so expect to pay from £1,000 upwards for a quality piece which will last. Top Tips: Avoid cheap versions if you opt for foam filled cushions, as they’ll flatten fast. “An element of love needs to go into a feather-filled cushion, as they require regular plumping, but we’ve minimised that by covering our duck feather cushions in a layer of foam,” she says. Style Guide: “A move away from ‘safe’ decor is allowing bolder colours and interesting textures to play a bigger role, and retro’s ultra-fashionable.” LOCATION LOCATION In large rooms, small sofas can look lost. Generally, high-backed sofas with upholstered arms dominate more and need more space around them, while a low-back slimmer sofa can be more discreet, and won’t block a view if placed in front of windows. L-shaped sofas can work well in a compact space, or act as room-dividers in an open plan area. Style Guide: Intricate fabric patterns and sofas customised with different details in piping, mixed fabrics or a choice of feet, are increasingly finding favour. While bold patterns bring a room to life, my preference is for large sofas upholstered in neutral tones or leather, which suit any decor scheme.

ur client is a family of 4 based in Loughton; they required a complete refurbishment of their existing main bathroom. ey wanted a contemporary feel to the room, storage and a good shower area were top of the list .Our client required Bathworks to supply everything they needed and to arrange the complete installation. In 2010 the property had had a loft conversion complete with a en-suite, so this main bathroom was mostly used by the two children of the house. e family now felt there was no requirement for a bath in the house, as everyone now preferred showering. e family came in for an in-depth meeting at our studio, we discussed the various options including the best layout and possible which sanitary wear to use. One issue was the room had 2 windows, this would potentially restrict certain layouts. It was decided we would block the main window, this would allow us to affix the glass shower screen and also to position a lit cabinet above the basin. With the correct lighting within the room, losing a window would not be an issue. With our state of the art software we drew
up plans in a 3D format, giving our client a better idea of how the area would look. Bathworks arranged for an installer to call over to the property, this gave him a better feel for the layout and eliminated possible problems such as plumbing restrictions. e final result, a happy family and a fabulous new bathroom. n
Products supplied from Duravit ceramics, Ambiance Bain furniture, Zehnder rad, Hansgrohe & 10mm frameless glass from Showerlab.e room was finished using tiles from Waxmans ceramics, including a brick style feature wall behind the radiator.
